Welcome to Issue 13 of The BULLetin. And boom we are back in to spring! We seem to have gotten off lightly with the white stuff (so far!) and enjoyed numerous sunny days since the Christmas period. Lots to report... You can get details of Friends of Haughton Park’s plans for 2019 on p7. Cultural developments aplenty also come via Tullynessle Hall and The Scottish Sculpture Workshop. Fans of the Doric tongue will be delighted to hear of the extension of the Stories Fae The Howe Project and, indeed, a whole Doric Film Festival...! There are lots of exciting things happening across the area and, where they don’t occur or become publicised at times in line with the BULLetin deadlines, I am happy to share them on Facebook in between. Just send it in. Deadlines for all publications have been streamlined for this year and every year to make them easier to remember – see above – and judging by the response to this issue and my two other titles, it works! Thank you to all our advertisers and to anyone who contributed copy. If you want your group, organisation, business or event to feature in The BULLetin, get in touch.

Valley Railway Revived
Following on from a community meeting held on 28 January 2019 where the future of Alford Valley Railway was discussed there seemed to be sufficient interest in establishing a community organisation. If you feel that you do not want to join a committee you can still be involved as there will be other volunteering opportunities within the attraction. If you would like to be involved please get in touch with the Marr Area Office: marr@aberdeenshire.gov.uk
Waste Collections
Aberdeenshire’s recycling and waste services is set to change, ahead of strict recycling targets and national restrictions on the use of landfill. Landfill waste will be collected once every three weeks from a smaller 180ltr bin. Currently, households have a 240ltrs bin for landfill waste, collected fortnightly. Households will have two larger bins for recycling – paper and card will be collected one week and metals, cartons and plastics another. Food waste will still be collected weekly. Although this kerbside collection option was the less popular of two proposed, it is judged to be the best option to decrease the material sent to landfill and push up recycling rates. The changes are expected to be implemented from April 2020 and further communication will take place with residents to outline the changes in more detail.

Written and performed by Matthew Zajac, and inspired by the life of Matthew’s father, The Tailor of Inverness is a story of the impact of war on ordinary people and families, a story of a boy who grew up on a farm in Galicia (Eastern Poland, now Western Ukraine) and became a tailor in Inverness, of how a life and an identity can be reconstructed. The tailor’s life spanned most of the 20th century, and the journey he took was made by thousands of Poles during WW2. His was a forced migration, subject to the brutal vagaries of war. Before settling in Scotland, he travelled and fought throughout Europe, the Soviet Union, the Middle East and England. In a new country, he became a new man and integrated himself into the fabric of life in the Scottish Highlands. This is the story he told. Theatre at Tullynessle promotes live theatre as part of the North East Arts Touring (NEAT) programme. Performances take place at Tullynessle & Forbes Hall, and are advertised on Facebook and locally. T@T’s spring programme features Dogstar Theatre in The Tailor of Inverness, on Wednesday 17 April at 7.30pm.
All Systems Go For Haughton Park New group publishes plan for 2019 improvements
Friends of Haughton Park group have published a plan for 2019. The Friends of Haughton Park formed in 2018 to help protect, promote and enhance Haughton Park. The plan has been developed using feedback from local people and working in partnership with the park’s owner Aberdeenshire Council. It is hoped that the plans will attract new visitors to the park, and in turn, new visitors to Alford. Plans for the year ahead include: • March/April: Tidy up/re-invigorate/plant at the Haughton Park Wildlife pond • June: Host Pop up Pump Track event in the park • September: Host awareness raising stall at the KT Bike Run There will also be various awareness-raising and fundraising activities throughout the year. The Friends of Haughton Park have already planted a variety of young fruit and native trees and spring bulbs in 2018 – with the generous support of local volunteers, councillors and organisations including Alford Rotary, and Aberdeenshire Council’s Landscape Services team. But this year’s main aim is to get its biggest project – the Bike Pump Track – rolling into action. The plans to enhance and re-invigorate the park feature in the current Alford Community Action Plan. The Council’s Landscape Services team are supporting their aims and are also planning various improvements to the park this year, including new play equipment to be installed in March, additional planting and new and improved signage. Friends of Haughton Park has committee office bearers in place , but as a relatively new group, more committee members are needed. Anyone is welcome to get involved so get in touch – there are many different roles to suit your skills and interests. Email friendsofhaughtonpark@gmail.com or contact them though their Facebook page at @friendsofhaughtonpark

You will see from our membership list over the page that we have quite a few vacancies. If you would like to see what we do, please come along to one of our meetings. Action Plan Progress
The Howe of Alford Community Action Plan was published in Autumn 2018. The next stage in making a difference to the Howe of Alford has been the establishment of The Howe of Alford Working Together Group. Individuals and organised groups have met together and linked up around the themes of the CAP. We want to monitor and support the progression of the Community Action Plan and act as a local forum where different groups can share ideas, issues and support each other. Meetings are in the Alford Community Campus: 7-9pm on 13 March 19 June, 18 September and 4 December. If you or your group want to get involved contact: Roisin Daly, Development Officer, Marr Area Partnership, 07765 696478 roisin@ marrareapartnership.org.uk or Andrew Travis at andalf@btinternet.com

Help Combat Loneliness Over-70s charity needs volunteers
Contact the Elderly is a national organisation which aims to relieve loneliness and isolation of people over 70. We organise small groups of volunteer drivers who take elderly members to a different volunteer host’s home for tea one Sunday a month. Over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship. Our service is free but we need to recruit additional volunteers. Volunteer hosts provide a simple afternoon tea in their own home for our guests and the drivers 2/3 times a year; volunteer drivers collect guests from their home once a month and accompany them to the monthly tea party. Mens’ Shed Progress...
In July 2018 after four years of negotiations with the local council we successfully arranged a capital asset transfer of the former school technical department and a strip of land sufficient for 18 allotments, a community orchard and sensory garden. Work parties meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays to get the building up to building warrant standard. Reinstating electric and water have been our biggest challenges, but if all goes to plan we should be operating properly early in 2019. 50 lorry-loads of topsoil have transformed our garden areas thanks to everyone who voted for us in the Stewart Miline Greener Spaces competition last year. We are on Facebook @Alford and District Men’s Shed. The offical contact is John Reid (secitery) 019755 62978.
Alford Fairtrade Group is looking forward to Fairtrade Fortnight until 10th March. Alford Bistro, The Cheery Cup and the café at Tick Tock Play are all taking part so please go along to one (or all) of these establishments for your cups of tea and coffee, get your loyalty card stamped and claim some delicious Fairtrade chocolate as a reward!
Behind this fun way of supporting Fairtrade lies the theme of this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight: campaigning for a living income to become a reality for cocoa farmers in West Africa. Performance Takes You Into The Mountain Scottish Sculpture Workshop producing new project
Photo: Lucy Cash A new place-sensitive performance project by acclaimed artist and choreographer Simone Kenyon is in the final stages of development with expert support from Scottish Sculpture Workshop (SSW) in Lumsden. Into The Mountain takes direction and inspiration from Nan Shepherd’s 1974 book, The Living Mountain, to explore and celebrate women’s encounters with high and mountainous places. The project has been developed by Simone over the past 6 years in collaboration with over 500 women who work and walk in the Cairngorms. It will culminate this May, deep within Glenfeshie, with a performance journey for a live audience.
The project seeks to challenge typical perceptions of mountaineering as an adrenaline-fuelled activity that aims to conquer heights and overcome the challenges of difficult terrain. Simone uses Nan’s writing to propose an entirely different approach; instead attempting to collaborate with the changing conditions of the mountain landscape and inviting audiences to “walk out of our bodies and into the mountain”. For more information on the Into The Mountain project and related events: Website: www.intothemountain.co.uk Email: info@intothemountain.co.uk Facebook: @intothemountainproject
First Christmas Festival A Success!
Get 2019 date in your diary, says Kerry Anderson After a very successful first Christmas Festival the Alford committee would like to say a massive thank you to every person and business that made it possible, from donations, buying/selling raffles, donating/putting up trees/lights, the entertainment, and all the other jobs in between to attending the festival itself. Special thanks to Stewart Milne Homes who sponsored the festival and Grampian Transport museum for letting us use their facilities and to KNC groundworks, Haughton Arms Hotel, The Alford Bistro, K & A Anderson, Everlong Art and Craigievar Marquees for continuous support along with the hardworking committee members and W & M Stuart plumbing, Aboyne Winter Festival and TSB for their kind donations. We couldn’t have asked for a better first event; the weather was fairly kind to us, the crowds enjoyed the entertainment on the stage, Thomas The Tank rides, Santa’s Grotto, children’s crafts and storytelling. There was an wonderful array of artisan crafts on offer and the Gin Bar thanks to Country Flavours and the food by Danni. The highlight for most was the Cairngorms Reindeer Herd and the parade led by Lonach pipe band. Due to the success and feedback from the community we plan to purchase new street lights so keep your eyes peeled and of course put in your diary Sunday 24th of November for this year’s festival and if any businesses or individuals would like to sponsor or donate to make it bigger and better please get in touch with our secretary Kerry at kerryjhenderson@hotmail.co.uk
