Contents

Welcome to Issue 15 of The BULLetin. Alford is great place to live, inside and out. Friends of Haughton Park have released plans for a new pump track for cyclists of all abilities and you can read all about that on p4. Fancy a bit of fishing? Your new Angling Club has 60 members already (p7). Big up the young people in the village: Alford Youth Cafe has gone from strength to strength and has just celebrated its first birthday while 18-year-old Chloe Lawson has her cake and eats it on p17. And did someone say Christmas? The Alford Christmas Festival committee are getting ready to do it all again on p8. There are lots of exciting things happening across the area and, where they don’t occur or become publicised at times in line with the BULLetin deadlines, I am happy to share them on Facebook in between. Just send it in, contacts below. Thank you to all our advertisers and to anyone who contributed copy about their group, organisation or event. You can find all the details and ad prices inside the back page. Remember that community information is FREE to include, so if you have any news, tell me about it.

Friends Propose New Bike Track in Park

The Friends of Haughton Park have an initial concept design and budget cost for a proposed facility in Haughton Park after consulting with trails creators Velosolutions UK. This is the first major project by the group and their aim is to provide a top quality, all weather pump track and mountain bike skills area, suitable for all ages and abilities, from tots on balance bikes to older skilled and non-skilled riders. The pump track design includes two key elements; a pump track and an adjoining beginner pump track. The main track is 160m in length and will have a fluid series of rolling features (from 0.4m-1.3m in height) along each straight and 1.3m high banked berm corners. The beginner pump track will have smaller rolling features (0.3-0.7m in height) and lower berms to provide a less aggressive area to learn riding skills. The mountain bike skills area is formed of a perimeter loop with a series of optional technical features each with three levels of difficulty. It will include climbing and decending rock features, drop-offs and jumps. An area alongside the core path will include optional small features designed for adaptive bikes and beginner riders. These will include a series of rolling features to mimic those of the pump track. This will create an accessible area, for riders of all abilities, including users of adaptive bikes. Their next steps will be to finalise the details and step up fundraising. If you’d like to get involved and be part of the volunteer team working to make this happen, get in touch via the group’s Facebook/instagram page or email friendsofhaughtonpark@gmail.com

Xmas Festival #2 set to surprise you, writes Kerry Anderson

Following on from a very successful first Christmas Festival last year, planning began in January, with lots of lessons learnt, to make this year bigger and better! You can expect our famous Thomas Rides, The Cairngorm Reindeer, ice skating, Santa’s grotto and kids’ crafts, an array of hand-picked artisan stalls, community stalls, live music, food and a bar area and expect a few surprises...! Our festival will be followed by our annual parade to switch on the Christmas lights at the big tree outside the Haughton Arms Hotel, followed by a family disco there. Look out for our new street lights! We hope the community of Alford and beyond will support us as we are a small committee of volunteers who give up time, expertise and equipment all for free to make it all possible.

The next Producers’ Market on Saturday 26th October will be the 9th Market. Since the first one in October 2015, the biannual Market has gone from strength to strength. The June market was the best yet with an increase in raffle and tea sales, which means more folks came through the doors. A big THANK YOU to the marvellously talented stallholders and to the folks who come from near and far to make their purchases and support the Hall and the stallholders. The feedback received is very complimentary, praising the quality and variety of stallholders and appreciating the beautiful cafe area. Here shoppers can rest and chat whilst enjoying the delicious home bakes and drinks, overlooking the scenic Donside countryside. The crisp white tablecloths and vintage china crockery are greatly appreciated. The raffle is always well supported as there are a lot of fantastic prizes, all donated by the stallholders. Put the date in your diary. Tullynessle Hall, Saturday October 26th 10am til 1pm. Watch out for the yellow posters and banners around the village.

Play Creates a Buzz

A new play by local artist Mel Shand is set to have Finzean Hall buzzing with a topical subject matter later in September. Coming from the same pen as the very successful alter:Nativity (2015), the story highlights the current global bee crisis and what can be done to help. Audience members are invited to come inside the hive and see from a bee’s perspective and its parallels with community life. Interspersed with popular songs, the community play aims to be joyful and informative – join the swarm and be kind! Get your tickets from BEEKindtickets@ gmail.com, price £8 adults, £6 child, £24 family (2 + 2) Finzean Hall: Friday 20 September 7pm Saturday 21 September 7pm Sunday 22 September 2.30pm

Once again the committee members at Tullynessle and Forbes Hall will be organising a Hogmanay Ceilidh on Dec 31st 2019. Tickets are always sold out in advance of the night, so don’t be disappointed and order yours early. The fantastic Jiggery Pokery Ceilidh Band will be playing. Contact Edna Harris for tickets 019755 63548 ms.edna.harris@gmail.com

Business is a piece of cake for Chloe, 18 The perfect place for your pet. Heading away on holiday? Your cat will be comfortable and cared for at the brand new, purpose built Cattery in the heart of Glenbuchat. Rest assured, your’re in safe hands.

www.catzcattery.com How many of us can say we started a business before the age of 18? Big hand for Chloe Lawson, who did exactly that when she opened Chloe’s Kitchen Creations in May this year, serving daily takeaway breakfasts, lunches, cakes and coffee from the venue behind the former bank building in Main Street. Previously an employee of Tick Tock Play, Chloe did a cake decorating course in her spare time and soon found business was booming. With a lot of help from friends, family and a few other village business people, she opened on May 1st, and celebrated her 18th birthday just a few weeks later. You can find Chloe at 56 Main Street, Alford, call her on 07788 212120, email chloeskitchencreations@gmail.com, or seek out her page on Facebook. Open weekdays 8-4, weekends 10-4, Chloe also makes celebration cakes and bakes to order, just get in touch.
