Welcome to Issue 16 of The BULLen. So we’ve come full circle in the year again and by the time you read this the festive lights will be up and the reindeer will have packed off again to the Cairngorms... The 2018 edition of the Winter BULLetin had only 16 pages; this one has double that at 32! There is a wealth of new businesses cropping up in Alford itself as well as beyond and they want you to know about them. We have Felicity Crawshaw to thank for our sparkling front cover photo, and you can read about all sorts of developments and new initiatives between these pages. There are lots of exciting things happening across the area and, where they don’t occur or become publicised at times in line with the BULLetin deadlines, I am happy to share them on Facebook in between. Just send it in, contacts below. Thank you to all our advertisers and to anyone who contributed copy about their group, organisation or event. You can find all the details and ad prices inside the back page. Remember that community information is FREE to include, so if you have any news, tell me about it. Happy New Year when it comes.

Big Plans for Sculpture Workshop...

Scosh Sculpture Workshop (SSW) has announced plans for a major project to upgrade their Lumsden workshop spaces and site in Lumsden. Marking SSW’s 40th anniversary in November with a two-day celebration attended by over 400 people, SSW Director Sam Trotman revealed the redevelopment plans for the first time. The project will see a ‘ground up’ development that utilises local materials, skills and knowledge, and foregrounds environmental sustainability and functional spaces for artists throughout the design and construction. The work will take place in collaboration with Edinburgh and Glasgow-based Collective Architecture, a practice with a focus on community and sustainability, who oen work with artists to realise projects. SSW was the first dedicated sculpture workshop in Scotland, set up in 1979 by artist Fred Bushe as a shared making facility for artists. Since then thousands have visited across the years, as a place renowned for supporting collective learning, living and making. Artists from all disciplines and practices have worked in the shared studio and workshops with support from the SSW teams, making new work, experimenting with material and process, and exploring the wider ecological, socio-economic and political concerns of SSW’s rural locale.

A new volunteer award scheme for primary-aged children has been launched by Aberdeenshire Voluntary Action. The iVolunteer Award aims to recognise the commitment to volunteering by young people by celebrating their achievements and acknowledging the time and effort dedicated to volunteering activities. Young people regularly volunteer without even realising it – the iVolunteer award lets us all celebrate and encourage that achievement! Now that the award has launched, AVA will be working to roll it out across Aberdeenshire. If you would like to know more about the iVolunteer Award, contact your local AVA Development Officer at Keith.Anderson@ avashire.org.uk; 07969 603595.

Well done, girls! Congrats to Donside Girls JFC, winners of the U13 World Girls Football Cup 2019 in Salou, Barcelona! 9

It is that time of year when we start to look back and review our year. In 2019 Donside Community Council has seen the completion of our project to provide notice boards to help visitors enjoy their visit to Alford and also produced an accompanying leaflet with visitor information which was distributed across Donside. DCC has been involved with and supported local groups and is excited about the work being done in the community by organisations and groups of volunteers. DCC continues to be involved with Friends of Haughton Park and the Alford Valley Railway Group. If you think we could help your group or project, please get in touch by email or by messaging via our Facebook page. Lumsden and Kildrummy residents, look out for events being held in the New Year to start off ideas for the new Community Action Plan... The last plan

was published in 2013 and it is now time to get together as a community and plan for the future. The first event is a dropin, open to everyone in the area, to find out more about what is involved, and will be held in Lumsden Hall on January 18th from 1.30pm. Come along and share your ideas over a fly cup and a slice of cake. There has been much discussion at our meetings about speeding in the Donside area. If you have concerns, please get in touch with your area representative and we will present your concerns and evidence to Aberdeenshire Council.

Alford Oncology Massage Clinic Massage is oen offered as part of cancer care in cancer centres, hospitals and hospices. Now we have this service right on our doorstep in Alford. Alison Spice and Danielle Allan are volunteering their services on alternate Thursday and Friday aernoons so that the clinic runs once a week. They are both fully qualified in oncology massage therapy and understand how stressful it can be when going through and/or aer cancer treatment. The treatment is a so, gentle, relaxing massage which will help you relax your mind and body and relieve tension. One of the main reasons people living with cancer use massage is because it helps them feel good. It is a way they feel they can help themselves. Generally, massage therapy can help li your mood, improve your sleep and enhance your well-being. Massage for people living with cancer is promoted as a natural way to help you relax and cope with stress, anxiety, headaches and pain. Some people worry that massage could cause cancer cells to spread to other parts of their body. Research has found no evidence of this, but Alison and Danielle will avoid any areas affected by cancer, such as tumour sites or lymph nodes. If you live in the Donside area and are going through treatment, just finished treatment or living with cancer and would like a relaxing massage, please contact the Alford District Nurses on Alford 62164 to book an appointment. Please leave a message if the nurses are out on a visit and they will get back to you. The treatment takes place in the Gordon Road Alford Health Clinic (district nurses’ clinic) across from the Alford Doctors’ Surgery.
