Curling Club’s pride in new cabin

The Vale of Alford Curling Club is delighted to see its new clubhouse and store in place following a devastating fire which destroyed the Murray Park venue. The clubhouse, and all its contents, was inexplicably and suspiciously burnt to the ground on the night of July 12th 2015. As well the building, all the memorabilia, trophies and equipment from the club’s 140-year history was lost. Since then the club’s members have been hard at work, fundraising the £21,000 required to replace it, with much support from the local community. Monies have been raised via the KT Bike Run, a car boot sale, the Alford

4

Charity Ball at Tullynessle and collection boxes in shops, to name but a few, as well as successful applications to the Co-op Local Fund and Marr Area Partnership. The historic club dates back to 1874 and aims to preserve the traditions and sport of curling outdoors in rural Aberdeenshire. When there is ice they meet at 2-4pm and 7-9pm, seven days a week. This is publicised on their Facebook page. You can find them there or contact Allan Taylor on 07834 946557, or email allantaylor2001962@gmail.com. More fundraising is still required to complete the project. If you can help the club achieve that, get in touch.

Howe of Alford Community Action Plan A draft Community Action Plan (CAP) has been created to give locals a final chance to review the issues and proposed actions before it is published later this summer. The 2017 CAP has been prepared by a steering group under the auspices of Donside Community Council (DCC) and addresses a series of issues which have been identified as the most pressing by the Howe of Alford community. The last CAP for the area – “Oor Alford” – was developed in 2010. A number of key issues were identified and delivered, but the primary focus was the creation of the Community Campus, which would provide a 21st century learning experience for all senior school pupils within the Howe as well as replacement nursery and primary schools. The campus opened in October 2015 and has brought wider educational opportunities as well as leisure and recreational facilities for the use of the wider community. Discussions between Marr Area Partnership and Donside Community Council (DCC) in 2016 led to the setting up of a steering group to undertake the development of a new Plan. Six themes and their key projects for action have been identified as follows: THEME 1 Alford Community Campus • Develop better transport links to Campus from Alford and surrounding area • Create a Café Culture in the Campus with extended hours • Make the Campus Sports and Arts facilities available to the Community • Bring the cost of using the Campus to an affordable level. • Develop a Campus Users Group to liaise on these issues THEME 2 Transport, Recreation and Leisure • Traffic control and speeding • Improved Public Transport within the Howe and links to other areas • Safety of road users • Walking paths for leisure, and to and from schools • Cycle lanes, cycle paths and cycling related facilities • Improved signage • Maintenance and development of community resources THEME 3 Community Health, Well-being and Social Care • Develop a Health and Social Care policy which delivers care locally • Safety within the Howe of Alford • Speeding • Community care, including a Befriending Service • Very Sheltered Housing

14

THEME 4 Sports and Recreation Facilities • Re-development of the Haughton Park • Development a specialised bike track in the Haughton Park • Delivery of the ongoing projects of the Men’s Shed and Curling Club Hut • Replacement of the Scout Hut • Better play park facilities THEME 5 Alford Village Amenities • Provide aesthetic improvements to the village to enhance the visual impact and improve signage. • Improve car parking facilities, specifically the main village care park, and at land adjacent to the Alford Heritage Museum • Bring greater coherence by improving communication about community events through an events calendar. • Re-develop the Haughton Park THEME 6 Housing, Domestic Services and Telecommunications • Better access to recycling centre in terms of capacity, opening times, facilities, layout and access. • Consideration of community options for the collection of garden waste. • Improvement of telecommunication facilities, specifically broadband speeds and Public access Wi-Fi at the Alford Community Campus • Housing strategy within the village needs to be revisited given the changing demographics of the area as well as the economic climate within NE Scotland.

The Future? It’s Electric! GTM’s season set to sizzle with new exhibits Grampian Transport Museum is celebrating the 35th anniversary of its opening in April 1983. From a small collection of locally owned cars it has grown into a fully accredited acclaimed museum. When it opens for the season on 30 March the museum will also be celebrating the birth of the electric vehicle (EV). It might seem that electric cars are a recent invention in response to climate concerns, but the first commercial EVs were built in the 1890s. But the real celebration is the creation by a little known local hero, Robert Davidson, who made the world’s first passenger carrying electric vehicle in Aberdeen in 1839! Robert Davidson was a chemist and inventor. Not much is known of the details of his electric carriage but it was reported as capable of carrying two passengers in the Union street premises where Davidson staged his electromagnetism exhibition in 1839. The Aberdeen Banner prophesied that electromagnetic machinery “will in no distant date supplant steam”. It turned out that Robert Davidson was in fact some 60 years ahead of his time. He subsequently built a fullsized battery-powered locomotive named “Galvani” that he successfully demonstrated on the new Glasgow to Edinburgh railway in 1842. At 16 feet long and weighing six tons it pulled a passenger coach at 4mph. It was reported that steam locomotive workers broke it up after its demonstration run, fearing the competition. In recognition of Robert Davidson’s important historical step and the subsequent stop start growth of EVs the museum has an exhibition this season

entitled “It’s Electric”, showing the story of the electric car from the Davidson’s pioneering days to the present and importantly, probing the future. The museum has built a full-size working replica of the motor and its battery. A model of the electric motor and of his electric locomotive and the passenger coach it pulled built will also be displayed both courtesy of the Steam Museum in Dublin. The museum will also be exhibiting a replica of the first car to reach 100kph (60mph) in 1898 - “La Jamais Contente So from the first EV in 1839, through record breaking performance in the 1890s to today when 1% of global car sales are electric, the battery operated Lunar Rover is still on the moon and a Tesla electric car is on an Elon Musk rocket heading towards Mars who knows the future growth of electric powered vehicles. It is likely to be rapid.

Business In Focus: Douneside House Modern health club’s origins are steeped in history

Sir Alexander MacRobert purchased the Burnside Estate (now known as Douneside House) just outside the village of Tarland, near Aboyne, as a holiday home for his family in 1888. During the early 1900s, the MacRobert family added extra rooms and a tower, transforming the property into the spectacular country house and gardens which are to be admired today. Douneside House is owned and run by the MacRobert Trust in memory of Lady MacRobert, who wished for the house to remain a place of tranquillity and peace. The MacRobert family were well known locally as significant philanthropists, which is why, following her three sons’ tragic deaths in accidents relating to aviation and WW2, Lady MacRobert decided to set up a charitable trust in their honour in 1943. All surplus profits generated at Douneside are either re-invested into the estate, or donated to charitable causes. Every year the Trust donates almost £1m to charitable organisations and it has supported many organisations and initiatives in the local area. Lady MacRobert also wished for Douneside House to be used as a holiday home for members of the British Armed Services and this valued tradition is continued with special discounted rates available for serving or retired members of the armed forces throughout the year.

Douneside Health Club is located within the grounds of Douneside House. There are various Health Club membership options available – from monthly payas-you-go to a full platinum membership – which includes access to all Health Club’s facilities and fitness classes. In addition, platinum members can enjoy various benefits at Douneside House, including an overnight stay and discounted dining at their fantastic restaurant which offers the region’s only 3 AA Rosette dining experience. Douneside’s menu features culinary delights using the finest local ingredients, including fresh produce grown organically in their kitchen garden. You can even join their exclusive Dining Club.
