About BVW - celebrating 30 years! Initiated in 1987 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s accession and to raise funds for the refurbishment of the Victoria and Albert Halls, Ballater Victoria Week raises thousands of pounds for local groups every year. The following groups received donations ranging from £100 to £1,000 as a result of the monies raised from last year’s BVW, in a payout totalling £5,500. On top of that, more groups benefitted from Duck Race ticket sales and through their own fundraising at BVW events. Help us raise even more for worthy groups and organisations in 2017 by supporting BVW and Being Amused. Welcome to Ballater Victoria Week 2017 and thank you for joining us. We hope you enjoy yourselves! What’s new? We are celebrating 30 years of Being Amused so a few events have a 1980s flavour. We plan to go old school with a cartie race after the parade, go mad with Lego and we are set to welcome some European neighbours. BVW will finish with The Spirit of Ballater Awards. Many of BVW’s events are free and it would not happen without the support of countless folk from the village and round about who give their time, knowledge and skills, for gratis. To each and every one of them the committee extends its grateful thanks. We are also especially indebted to our sponsors and advertisers. We value your feedback and you can let us know what you think about the events you take part in using the contacts overleaf. Please enjoy all that this year’s Victoria Week has to offer, take a good look at what’s going on and, above all,

The trains on display are tinplate toys made during the last 100 years, both at home and abroad. The collection began at Christmas 1956, when a then four-year-old received his first clockwork Hornby train set, every boy’s gift of choice at the time. Over the years, additions were made, culminating in what you see today. The display includes both clockwork and electric trains, and possibly live steam fuelled by methylated spirits...! Watch the trains go round, and revel in nostalgia. Should your old train set still be up in the loft, and you would like to see it running again, bring it along to the Old Post Office during BVW.

SUNday 6 August Parade day!

Vehicle Parade

Bridge Street, 1pm, FREE Always a highlight of BVW, the vehicle parade will have an eclectic range of transport on display in Monaltrie Park and following the pipe band round the village square at 1pm. Last year’s vehicle count came in at 100 and ranged from million pounds hypercars through traditional classics, motor bikes, trikes, an impressive array of tractors and even a Ford Transit Van! The vehicles will gather in Monaltrie Park from 9am, with judging at 11am, and the parade starting at 1pm. Porsche Club BG, The Ferrari Owners Club and The Royal Deeside Festival of Speed will be attending again this year with their club stands and there will be motorbikes from a number of groups, alongside everybody’s heroes, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s Ballater crew. Monaltrie Park is just a short walk from the centre of the village if you wish to switch between the two and grab yourself a bite to eat or cup of tea in one of the village shops or stalls but if you just can’t leave the park we will also have food and drink available on site to keep you refreshed. If you’re reading this in advance and you want to show off your pride and joy, whatever its marque or model, there’s still time to get an entry in. You can enter online via the website or we can normally squeeze you in if you turn up on the day.

Sunday 6 NEW! Cartie Race

Bridge Steet, after the parade FREE

“Racing is life. Anything before or after is just waiting.” Steve McQueen As great as the Vehicle Parade is with all its hyper cars and noise, what is lacking is a speed-based competition. We’ve looked into the logistics... and we can’t afford it. However, inspired by and in conjunction with the Royal Deeside Festival of Speed and at the request of the Co-op staff, we bring you the inaugural BVW Cartie Race! Carties/Soapboxes/Bogies/ Go Karts/Gravity Racers – we haven’t really settled on a name yet – will get launched from the top of Bridge Street, next to Emslies, following the Parade, to see how far they get. So come and cheer them on. It could be the start of Ballater rivaling Monaco.

NEW! Descendants of Loinmuie: The Lost VIllage

BVW Box Office, BO Green, 11am-5pm FREE

A small project by the children at Ballater Library Craft clubs has blossomed into a major undertaking which has identified hundreds of descendants of the Lost Village of Loinmuie, abandoned for nearly 200 years but not forgotten by its sons and daughters. The children’s project, which can be seen in the library window and in a workbook within, focused on the last community to live at Loinmuie in the 1840s, but thanks to diligent work by 8th and 9th generation descendants, and the work of authors, hundreds of Bairns of Loinmuie have now been discovered and invited to help create a valuable social record for Ballater Library. This open event will make all Loinmuie descendants especially welcome in Ballater and invite anyone with an interest to view the children’s project and sign our special book which will be at the BVW Box Office from 11am to 5pm in the charge of storyteller Joan Anderson. The Loinmuie research can also be viewed before that during library opening times.

History@the Halls Mike Sheridan Room V&A Halls, 2pm, £5

Listen to stories of family feuds, a battle when the long-bow was used for the last time in the British Isles, the romance of Bonnie Prince Charlie, the discovery of a spa and the beginnings of Ballater’s development. Hear about a ruined church of historical importance, the four bridges of Ballater and the first Muckle Spate that caused so much damage. Learn of the area’s popularity with royalty from early times to the present day. Dr Sheila Sedgwick tells you all about Ballater’s fascinating history.

Highland Dancing, Victoria Hall, 7pm, £D

Dancers from the Ballater-based Fiona Brandie School of Dancing will take to the stage to demonstrate their skill and technique in traditional Highland Dancing. Girls and boys aged between 4 and 18 will take part, with many rehearsing for competing in the Ballater Highland Games on Thursday.

Weel Kirkit Meet Glenmuick Church, 11am FREE (churches welcome donations)

Tuesday 8

The three churches in Ballater are treasure houses of local history and folklore. Join storyteller Joan Anderson and find out what the bell actually says when it rings out; why a lump of stone under the back pew turned out to be a precious Christianity/River Dee connection going back 1,400 years; why flowers, princesses, dragons, dog kennels, joiners’ tools and hub caps all tell part of the tale of these buildings which are sacred to our community and important as living museums containing chapters of Ballater’s history – connected to each other, but seldom told as a whole. The walk takes in Glenmuick Church of Scotland, St Kentigern’s Episcopal and St Nathalan’s RC. Find out about secret panels, heroes, mysteries, miracles, humanity, sacrifice, heritage and a passing reference to Dr Who. For visitors and those who bide alike. Children must be accompanied. “Weel Kirkit” just means you have been to church a lot in one day. Duration 2 hours approx Open to all ages but be aware that this event involves lots of walking/standing and may not be suitable for the very young or physically infirm.

Wednesday 9 August construction Day!

NEW! Old Railway Station Redevelopment Guided Tours

Station Square, 10am + 2pm, FREE, BOOKING ESSENTIAL

Ballater’s residents and visitors have been eagerly watching developments at the Old Royal Station as construction company Morgan Sindall takes on the task of painstakingly putting the beloved historical landmark building back to its former glory and suitable for modern purpose too, following the devastating fire of May 2015. As part of the Victoria Week celebrations, the company is offering two 45-minute site tours around the refurbishment, so you can see for yourself how things are progressing. Places are limited to 10 for each tour so book early to avoid disappointment by emailing Nicola.Gooch@morgansindall.com; first come, first served. Hard hats etc provided! It is hoped the Old Royal Station will reopen fully by early 2018, with much of the refurb visible by the time of the Ballater Winter Festival, this year taking place on November 25 and 26. Ballater Highland Games were instituted in 1864. Gates open 10am, heavy events start at 11am and the village’s annual treat kicks off with the arrival of the combined massed pipe bands around noon. Many famous athletes and champions have competed at Ballater and today’s events form part of the circuits comprising the Glenfiddich Heavy Events Championship and the Grampian Games Qualifying Championship, which encourages the younger athletes in the heavy and field events. Ballater Games prides itself in having something for everyone, young and old alike, and the field itself is surrounded by multifarious trade stands, together with a fun fair and hill race to entertain all. Make sure you pick up a Games Programme Brochure from the BVW Box Office or from the many outlets around the village.
