About BVW Initiated in 1987 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s accession and to raise funds for the refurbishment of the Victoria and Albert Halls, Ballater Victoria Week raises thousands of pounds for local groups every year. On top of that, more groups benefit from Duck Race ticket sales and through their own fundraising at BVW events. The following groups received donations ranging from £100 to £750 as a result of the monies raised from last year’s BVW. Help us raise even more for worthy groups and organisations in 2018 by supporting BVW and Being Amused. Welcome to Ballater Victoria Week 2018 and thank you for joining us. We hope you enjoy yourselves! What’s on? We plan to go ahead again with the popular cartie race after the parade, go mad with Lego, and, of course, we’ll be amusing you with Pet Shows, Scarecrows and Ducks galore! Many of BVW’s events are free and it would not happen without the support of countless folk from the village and round about who give their time, knowledge and skills, for gratis. To each and every one of them the committee extends its grateful thanks. We are also especially indebted to our sponsors and advertisers. We value your feedback and you can let us know what you think about the events you take part in using the contacts overleaf. Please enjoy all that this year’s Victoria Week has to offer, take a good look at what’s going on and, above all,

ALL WEEK! Graeme’s Vintage Toy Train Heaven
The Old Post Office, Netherley Place 11am-4pm exc Fri 4th, £D The trains on display are tinplate toys made during the last 100 years, both at home and abroad. The collection began at Christmas 1956, when a then four-year-old received his first clockwork Hornby train set, every boy’s gift of choice at the time. Over the years, additions were made, culminating in what you see today. The display includes both clockwork and electric trains, and possibly live steam fuelled by methylated spirits...! Watch the trains go round, and revel in nostalgia. Should your old train set still be up in the loft, and you would like to see it running again, bring it along to the Old Post Office during BVW. Our quality is never an accident; it is always the result of intelligent effort

SUNday 5 August Parade day!
Vehicle Parade
Bridge Street, 1pm, FREE Always a highlight of BVW, the vehicle parade will have an eclectic range of transport on display in Monaltrie Park and following the pipe band round the village square at 1pm. Last year’s vehicle count came in at 100 and ranged from million-pound hypercars through traditional classics, motor bikes, trikes and an impressive array of tractors. The vehicles will gather in Monaltrie Park from 9am, with judging at 11am, and the parade starting at 1pm. Porsche Club BG, The Ferrari Owners Club and The Royal Deeside Festival of Speed will be attending again this year with their club stands and there will be motorbikes from a number of groups, alongside everybody’s heroes, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s Ballater crew. Monaltrie Park is just a short walk from the centre of the village if you wish to switch between the two and grab yourself a bite to eat or cup of tea in one of the village shops or stalls but if you just can’t leave the park we will also have food and drink available on site to keep you refreshed. If you’re reading this in advance and you want to show off your pride and joy, whatever its marque or model, there’s still time to get an entry in. You can enter online via the website or we can normally squeeze you in if you turn up on the day.

Sunday 5 Cartie Race
Bridge Steet, after the parade FREE
“Racing is life. Anything before or after is just waiting.” Steve McQueen As great as the Vehicle Parade is with all its hyper cars and noise, what is lacking is a speed-based competition. We’ve looked into the logistics... and we can’t afford it. However, inspired by and in conjunction with the Royal Deeside Festival of Speed and at the request of the Co-op staff, we bring you the BVW Cartie Race! Carties/Soapboxes/Bogies/Go Karts/Gravity Racers – we don’t care what you call them – will get launched from the top of Bridge Street, next to Emslies, following the Parade, to see how far they get. So come and cheer them on.

Sunday 5 Ballater Chiels Top Gear Challenge
Start 12 noon outside the Co-op, Finish approx 3pm The Chiels’ Top Gear Challenge will consist of five different modes of transport (including manpower!!) traversing five different routes and distances throughout Deeside. Hoping for a return target time of 3 hours 15mins, the challenge will be to see who comes back to the village first... Funds will hopefully be raised via competitors having individual sponsor sheets and they plan to hold a “tote” on the day of the challenge on the church green where people can gamble on who will be first home – with cash prizes going to those who guess right . All proceeds raised from the event will go towards our ongoing redevelopment project of the Christmas lights on the church spire (a focal point that has been missing for the last couple of years). If anyone would like to join the Chiels in the challenge and help to raise some money for the restoration of the Xmas lights (entering any of the categories below) then feel free to contact andy.thain73@Gmail.com or 07752532864

Buttony Bear A Bear Named Buttony is a project which creates cuddly toys with stomas on their abdomens just like their young owners The small openings, which are made for medical reasons, can often be traumatic for very young children. But by giving them furry friends who have the same thing, the charity – set up by friends from Ballater – hopes to help them feel less different and better understand what is happening to them. Jenny Gow, project director of A Bear Named Buttony, said: “The idea is to give them a friend that’s just like them.” More than a dozen north-east children who have undergone complex surgeries have been given specially-made teddy bears to help them feel less lonely. Games Day!
Ballater Highland Games
Monaltrie Park, from 10am ÂŁ10/ÂŁ2
Ballater Highland Games were instituted in 1864, and have been held each year since then, apart from the war years. Gates open at 10am, competitions start at 11am and the village’s annual treat has its formal opening with the arrival of the combined pipe bands around noon. There are highland dancing and piping competitions, track and light field events, including a hill race, and many famous athletes and champions have competed at Ballater in the heavy field events. The latter are included in the Glenfiddich Heavy Events Championship and the Grampian Games Qualifying Championship, which encourages the younger athletes in the heavy field events. Ballater Games prides itself in having something for everyone, young and old alike, with food and drinks outlets, an interesting variety of craft and trade stands, and a fun fair. Make sure you pick up a Games Programme Brochure from the BVW Box Office or from the many outlets around the village.

Ballater and Crathie Community Action Plan is Launched After 12 months of consultation the 2018 – 2023 Ballater and Crathie Community Action Plan (CAP) was officially launched at the Ballater Farmers Market on Saturday 26 May 2018. This was the culmination of a 12 month process which started with an open community meeting held in the Mike Sheridan room on Wednesday 10 May 2017. At that meeting which was attended by over 70 members of the community, a call for volunteers to form a steering group was made and answered. Every effort was made to ensure that the steering group was as representative of all age groups and sectors of the Ballater and Crathie community as possible from those who were prepared to offer their time. The ability to work collaboratively, while challenging each other in a constructive manner was deemed essential to deliver positive engagement with all sections of the community. The starting point for the group was to develop a questionnaire that could be presented to the community and its visitors which would not be too cumbersome or filled with leading questions, but which would allow every person who engaged with the exercise to be able to express themselves. The steering group spent two months interpreting the data that was received before holding a second public meeting on Saturday 4 November where all of the responses were placed on display and the community were asked to attend and add any further comments that they felt were missing. From November to January the gathered data was reviewed and filtered to produce a list of action points that the community had identified was important to them. These were then split into short, medium and long terms objectives, based on the complexity and scale of each project and stakeholders identified. The group also felt that it was important to identify a lead stakeholder for each project to ensure that they would be driven, rather than wait for someone to take the lead and as a consequence it was agreed that all identified stakeholders would be afforded the opportunity to comment and agree to their involvement in advance of any public sharing of the initial draft CAP. In addition to the presentation of the draft CAP the community were also advised that following the launch the steering group would dissolve, having completed its task of producing the final CAP. The opportunity was also taken to announce the need to form a Community Action Team (CAT) and this was explained as follows: What is it? The Community Action Team should be made up from representatives from all sectors of the community who have the skills to work with the various groups delivering the identified actions, in a collaborative and inclusive manner. As a team they should be able to provide guidance through their knowledge of their sectors and support by way of their network and skill sets, but not lead the groups. What makes it up? The CAT should be made up of 9 – 13 members of the community who have a good understanding of their own sectors within the village and who have the respect of the community and the stakeholder groups.
What is its aim? Ultimately the CAT will exist to ensure that the CAP is delivered. It will meet at regular intervals to receive progress updates from the lead stakeholders for each of the action points and will discuss what assistance may be required and provide constructive feedback on the work to date. It should be acting as an oversight committee and should be received as a support and enabling function rather than a leading authority. Since the launch, the core of the CAT has been formed and an initial meeting has taken place and this has identified that there is a great need for more volunteers from the community to help deliver the projects. New groups will need to be formed to cover events, heritage, sport and leisure, allotments, communications, bus and transportation and housing and if you want to be involved with the delivery of any of the projects identified in the CAP, you are encouraged to reach out any of the members of the CAT and they will be delighted to introduce you to the stakeholder groups who will be working on delivering the communities needs and wants. Communication has been highlighted as a key project in its own right and the CAT will be producing regular updates on the progress of the plan by using the Eagle, the CAT Facebook page, public meetings if required and any other medium that assists in delivering the message to all corners of the Ballater and Crathie community. This is your plan and if it is to become a reality the CAT needs you. A digital copy of the CAP can be downloaded from http://www.marrareapartnership.org.uk/our-work/.
