New Hall For Crathes? Moira Hamilton is on the case
After community consultation and adaptation of plans, the Board of Crathes Hall will soon be submitting a planning application for a brand new hall. Of course this will require a massive fundraising effort and we need your help and support. The target date for a new hall is 2021. The Crathes community has now grown in size due to the large new housing development at the Gardens. The recent Christmas party and Hogmanay ceilidh, both held at the hall, brought together many residents from Crathes “old” and new. The new hall will provide for this growing community including many children and young people. To keep in touch with developments, see the hall’s Facebook page @/Cratheshall, website www.crathes.com/hall.htm or subscribe to our mailing list.

Fairtrade Group Rices to Challenge... It’s time to celebrate our Fairtrade achievements and our commitment to make trade fair. Last year the Banchory Fair Trade Group encouraged the local area to take the ‘90kg rice challenge’. Selling 90kg of fairly traded Kilombero rice from Malawi earns a farmer enough to send a child to secondary school for a year. Could we achieve this? YES, WE DID – in fact we sold 450kg of rice, so five times ‘the challenge’! Well done and thanks to all those in the community enjoying the delicious rice – sold via the local churches, cafes (Dee-Licious, Buchanans, Number One), Banchory Academy and various groups. And Hill of Banchory Primary went for their own ‘90kg challenge’ too! This year, the Fairtrade Fortnight theme is ‘She Deserves a Living Income’. The spotlight is on improving the lives of cocoa farmers, particularly the women farmers in West Africa. $1 a day is the current income, $2.50 a day would give a living income. Political and purchasing activities are called for. The Fairtrade Foundation is launching a campaign with a petition to the UK government to make living incomes a priority for UK aid. So please sign the petition, lobby your MP and MSP, then go and buy a bar or two of Fairtrade chocolate. Who doesn’t enjoy a bar of chocolate? There are lots of different bars of Fairtrade chocolate available in the local shops, so try several! Please make a Deeside difference this Fairtrade Fortnight 25 February – 10 March and on through 2019. www.fairtrade.org.uk
After The Show...
Another Show! writes Drew Young Flushed with success following their Christmas pantomime, the Banchory Drama Club has launched itself into the annual Festival of One-Act Plays. With a couple of adult entries in the competition this year, the club has been able to cast 12 eager actors in two quite different plays. ‘The Train’ is a very serious piece set in… well set in a train but there’s not much more we can tell you without spoiling the experience. ‘The Corrida’ is an altogether lighter play, featuring members of an ad hoc ping-pong club having fun putting on a bullfight in their village. (In Banchory?) The first round of the Festival, in February, will have been and gone by the time you read this edition of the Fly, but the second round in Brechin is in midMarch and we’re hoping that at least one of our plays will make it through. We’ll also try to find a suitable date and venue to showcase the plays in Banchory. Watch this space for news of our successes – or glorious failures – and check out River Dee Radio for information.
Board not Bored

When would you prefer to participate in a board games session: Option A: Wednesday 3-6pm Option B: Friday 3-6pm What games would you like to play? If you would like to help run a session and are available please contact us.
Fledgling Philosophy Group Takes Flight
Chilly start followed by warm enthusiasm, writes Bob Russell Members of the Philosophy Group met in January in Banchory; the first 10 minutes in a freezing cold shop doorway due to a last-minute change of venue, before adjourning to a local hotel! Brief introductions were followed by a general “what do we do next?”. The first conclusion was the recognition of wide differences in background and expectations, but there was also an enthusiasm to see what would evolve. We aim to meet monthly at this stage probably Tuesday or Thursday at 7pm, at a member’s home and prepare in advance a topic for discussion at each meeting, allowing time for research/ documentation etc (no pressure!). We felt that some structure to the meetings would be desirable, so a chairperson (perhaps the meeting host, or the topic leader) would guide the proceedings. We also identified some online courses that might be of interest – these are free as long as you don’t need a final test and certificate. One of these which we had some experience of was the University of Edinburgh’s Introduction to Philosophy. Our topic for the next meeting is based on an introductory book, A Beginner’s Guide to Philosophy by Dominique Janicaud (ISBN 978-1-60598-078-2 51396). We hope to circulate a precis of this before the meeting – for those who can’t see the book straight away. So we’re off. If you are interested in learning more, we’d love to hear from you, and you’d be welcome at our first meeting. Do call or email: Bob Russell 01330 820376, russellb@lodgeconsultancy.com

Dibble’s Doodles
your favourite gardening columnist looks at how to deal with common pests... Did you know that there are three different definitions of the first day of Spring? No? Neither did I: a) Meteorological spring, based on temperatures, is March 1st in the northern hemisphere. b) Astronomical spring, this year March 20th, is the day where Earth’s tilt on its axis is neither towards nor away from the sun. c) Solar spring, based on daylight hours, was February 1st. And the clocks go forward on March 24th. Hope you have a happy Easter. I am so happy I could wet my plants. The next time you boil or, if you are posh, steam vegetables, don’t pour the water down the drain, use it to water potted patio plants, and you’ll be amazed at how the plants respond to the “vegetable soup.” Do let it cool down first though! Now is the time to divide any perennials if they have become too large for the space. Don’t throw any rooted bits away. Pot them up and give them to your friends or the Gardening Club annual plant sale on Saturday May 25th. Some of the pests to watch out for – in no particular order 1) The neighbour’s cat 2) Slugs 3) The cat from the next street 4) Snails 5) The cat from 2 streets away 6) Greenfly/blackfly/white fly 7) The man who wants to clean your drive 8) The cat from the other side of town 9) Wood Pigeons

Plant Lots of Garlic: Garlic is an effective and natural bug repellent. Plant lots of it in your garden in among other vegetables to protect them from pests. You could also make your own garlic spray by boiling a pint of water, throw in roughly chopped garlic cloves and steep until the water cools. Remove garlic bits then spray on plants frequently. You will also smell wonderful afterwards, particularly if you have any French ancestry. The best way to eradicate slugs is to encourage lots of natural predators such as birds, beetles, frogs and hedgehogs. Happy gardening.

At the start of the afternoon we have an hour-long special, “Jane Live”, which reviews the local culture and provides information on events up and down Deeside. There follows an hour of sports programmes, “Sport with Paul”, with interviews featuring local sporting personalities and clubs. The schedule continues with music and chat including “Bett Bros” at 2pm, “The Word Association” at 3pm and some past shows from Robby McRobb at 4pm. The afternoon session finishes with “Jazz Café” from 5pm to 6pm. The evening starts at 6pm with “That Friday Feeling”, an hour live special with Jan Leatham and Andy Wilkins. This is followed by “Mike’s Country Club”. At 8pm “Headbangers” turn their attention to rock music. Then an hour of Scottish music with “Macrae’s Ceilidh” from 9pm to 10pm. “The Lonestranger” provides two hours of rock music from 10pm. Work is about to begin on conversion of a portion of the Legion Scotland undercroft to be a Men’s Shed. Phase 1, conversion of a garage bay, is fully funded, and fundraising continues for Phase 2, conversion of the open area. Meanwhile, the Men’s Shed meets every Tuesday at 10:30 am at Legion Scotland Banchory Ravenswood Club. Membership is open to all men aged 18 or over, and is free. Prospective members are welcome to drop in and will receive a warm welcome. The Men’s Shed movement began in Australia and has spread worldwide. Sheds provide a social and practical outlet for men, many of whom might otherwise become isolated. “Sheds” have become recognised as major contributor to the improvement of men’s health and wellbeing. Men’s Shed activities typically fall into five areas: work and activity, health and welfare, educational, recreational and communal. The Men’s Shed movement recognises the particular challenges which men face around life changes such as retirement, social isolation and a lack of established social circles once away from the working environment, and also the isolation and lack of direction which men can experience due to, say, long-term unemployment. Men’s Sheds are not always exclusively for men, and many Men’s Sheds have women actively participating, but a Men’s Shed provides those facilities to address needs particular to men and the different ways in which men live, communicate and interact. A common saying is that “Men don’t talk face to face, they talk shoulder to shoulder”. For further information, please see our website http://banchorymensshed.org or our Facebook page.

The Fly LOVES Business!
The new Fly relies on advertising to pay for design and printing. But our advertisers are not just a space on a page. All advertisers also benefit from featuring in a Facebook album every quarter, and where advertisers’ posts are seen, they are shared. Feel free to tag The Fly to make sure we see it. New businesses who advertise can also benefit from introductory features, and there are perks to being a long-term advertiser too, or featuring in our Aboyne and Alford publications also. The business landscape and publicity methods are changing all the time so if you have any ideas on how The Fly can further support you, do let us know. No matter if you are on the High Street, out in the sticks, working from your spare room or just online, get in touch.
The very best of luck to all new businesses starting up. Have you started a new business in the Banchory area? Want a mention? Get in touch: catrionahouston@yahoo.co.uk
