Playgroup appeals while Toddlers fold Mixed fortunes affect groups for the pre-school demographic

Sadly, Aboyne Baby & Toddler Group had to close in April this year. It was unfortunate that the current committee were not able to continue in their roles and no one wished to take on the roles and the running of the group. It was therefore decided at the AGM in April that all assets would be donated to local groups to benefit the community – in particular, those supporting the children of Aboyne and surrounding areas. We would like to thank all past and present committee members and parents for the hard work they have volunteered for the success of the group to date. We are sure the group will be missed. by Jodie Ball The donations were divided as follows: £100 to 1st Aboyne Rainbows £100 to 1st Aboyne Brownies £100 to 2nd Aboyne Brownies £100 to 1st Aboyne Guides £100 to 1st Aboyne Beavers £100 to 1st Aboyne Cubs £100 to 1st Aboyne Scouts £100 to Aboyne Primary School Parent Council £100 to Aboyne Academy Parent Council £250 to Aboyne Golf Juniors £200 to Riding with the Disabled, Deeside £50 to Aboyne Breastfeeding Group £50 to Deeside PANDAS Support Group £250 to Aboyne Village Christmas Party £200 to Mid Deeside Community Trust £200 to the Community Garden

Aboyne Playgroup (SC04150) was started up in 2009 by a group of parents after the council closed down the original. We are facing difficult times just now with low child numbers. It isn’t possible

8

to continue after the summer if we cannot pick up numbers. If your child is aged 2, come along for a free taster session and sign up to get your child ready for starting nursery, build new friendships, explore the wider world within Playgroup.. We rely solely on funding and fundraising, if anyone wishes to take part in a fundraiser for Playgroup or help organise a fundraiser we would be extremely grateful. People Power PICKS IT UP!

Group gathers 16 bags of rubbish in just one hour... Fed up with the refuse thrown away in one of Aboyne’s popular beauty spots and walkways, two families set about spending a May Sunday morning clearing it up, and encouraging others to do the same. One of the mums involved, Lucy Styles, told The Fountain: “Sarah (Rochester)’s son Isaac was getting annoyed by all the litter (or glitter, as he calls it) that they came across, particularly in the Bellwood, on their walks. So we put out the word and gathered a group of like-minded people for a glitter pick! “We were really keen to make it really accessible and family friendly so buggies, dogs and little people were all welcome. It was super to have so many really young people involved from age two up as it is such an important message. We had 20 people of all ages, and we got 16 bags of litter, in one hour!

11

“The council loaned us the pickers, bags, tabards and arranged for bins for all the rubbish collected. These are available for any community or group to borrow from the community waste team. “We are hoping to maybe work with some of the other youth organisations later in the year to do some more glitter picking!” www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/waste/ recycling-and-waste-contact/

Canoe Club blows rivals out of the water Team’s success down to grassroots programme, says David Woods

The Aboyne Canoe Club kayak polo team ‘The Deefenders’ won the Scottish Division Three League, securing their place in Division 2 at the ‘Stramash’ at Glasgow’s Pinkston Loch this Spring. The team, half of which is composed of secondary school students along with two teachers and a couple of volunteers, managed to convincingly defeat a series of experienced adult teams, winning 20 out of 23 games! Much of this success is owed to a well-established grassroots youth outreach program which was consolidated by a series of kayak polo sessions orchestrated by coach Harry Burnett. Harry organised the loaning of four Scottish Canoe Association kayak polo boats and secured funding for travel expenses through the Aberdeenshire Capacity Grant. Marr Area partnership grant funded training at Knockburn Loch, transforming it into a Kayak polo venue and Aboyne Community Centre swimming pool became a regular winter weather training facility. Club Chairman Chris Redmond said: “It’s a fantastic achievement in our first year in the national leagues made extra special by the fact that half our team our under 18. It’s going to be an exciting and challenging year in Division 2.” Youth team member Bob Cain (17): It’s been a fantastic experience learning paddle skills with the club and then applying them to the competitions across Scotland.”

Village’s Rich Tapestry One Year On Inspiring stitchwork is getting about while taking shape

The Tarland Tapestry has been a year in the making now and is making good progress. The team of 11 stitchers of varying abilities is led by former teacher Janet Healey, who told The Fountain: “A group of us saw the Great Tapestry of Scotland in 2014 and thought, ‘why don’t we?’” After a few meetings, the group attended the bi-annual market in the MacRobert Hall where they canvassed opinions and enabled the community to choose the themes that would feature on the finished work: agriculture, buildings, music, wildlife, pastimes, landscapes and landmarks all have a place. They took advice from the Great Tapestry’s Andrew Crummy, and had a workshop with Dorie Wilkie, who coordinated the inclusion of the 1,000 volunteer stitchers in that work.

14

Originally the group used an empty shop in the village to meet and stitch, but since that has become occupied, they now meet in the MacRobert Hall every Monday at 1.30pm, and the work goes home with the stitchers to keep it going in between. The project has also been in demand for talks and demos at various functions and groups. Janet added: “It’s been getting about. There are plans for space for spinoff projects once the Great Tapestry of Scotland finds a permanent home, in about two years’ time, so I’d like to think we will be finished by then.” If you would like to get involved in the completion of the Tarland Tapestry project, contact Janet at janethealey@me.com.

Group’s focus is Community Safety The feeling of being safe and secure within one’s own home, workplace or a public area is an obvious essential element of Community Safety. It involves the protection of everyone’s right to live in, work in, or simply visit Aberdeenshire in confidence, without fear for their own or other peoples’ wellbeing, and includes the protection of their property. Community Safety can be about: preventing crime and the opportunity for it to be committed; creating safe communities for residents and visitors; generally improving upon the quality of life for everyone. It is also about developing partnerships between the council, police, Scottish Fire and Rescue, Health and Social Care Partnership, local businesses, organisations, other service providers, voluntary agencies and most importantly, local communities. There are six local Community Safety Groups across Aberdeenshire, with the South Marr Safety Group covering Banchory to Braemar and everything in between. The South Marr Safety group aims to address local safety issues and will, in collaboration with the Partners, initiate projects to resolve them. If you are interested in finding out more or have an issue you would like make the group aware of or would be interested in attending meetings please contact us at or have a look at our website. southmarr@aberdeenshirecommunitysafety.org.uk www.aberdeenshirecommunitysafety.org.uk

The weather has finally changed for the better and the sun can once again be seen in the skies above Aboyne. As someone who loves getting outside this is real boon. I have often said to people that I feel I am WALL-E, and need the sun to recharge my batteries. I feel energised and invigorated in the warming beams and fresh air. For those that read the article in the spring Fountain about my ‘30 things for 30 years’ challenge, you will know that I am undertaking a number of physical challenges for charity this year (I promise this is tied in with my sun writings). You should also know that I am not a natural athlete. So, how can I combine my desire to improve my overall body strength with my desire to bask in the fresh air and sunlight? Enter Fay Jordan and Trail Tribe! I first heard about Fay and Trail Tribe from the girls at Spider on a Bicycle. Given that everything I have ever tried from Spider has been ambrosial (I get genuine withdrawal symptoms from their almond and banana toast) I

in

Lady V’s Shoes A column on village life from Victoria Kennedy thought, why not get in touch and see what it’s all about? Cue the Rocky soundtrack! This girl means business. After a verging on stalker scroll through Fay’s Instagram feed I immediately felt empowered and stronger, even though all I had done was look at a handful of photos and videos of her sessions while sipping on a cup of tea. Squats in the woods, rolling tyres up hills, push-ups on a log... exercise in nature‘s playground. This is something I could get on board with. The Aboyne Green was to be the setting for my debut into this world of sun, sweat and smiles (honestly, no one in any of her photos looks like they are having anything other than fun). As a newbie to the group I was a little anxious at first, especially when Fay demonstrated the battle ropes, something I had only ever seen on dvd extras for films where the star has bulked themselves up to the status of a demigod. This anxiety, I am pleased to report, was soon dispersed. Fay and the group’s energy was infectious. I lunged, I squatted, I threw stumps of wood fully embracing my inner lumberjack and discovered that a burpee is funnier to say than it is to do repeatedly for the duration of an AC/DC song. I was a red, sweaty, shaky mess at the end of the hour, but, would you believe it, I was one of those smiling faces that I had seen on Instagram. www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/30things www.30thingsfor30years.com

Planning for this year’s 2018 Aboyne & Deeside Festival is well under way. Here is a taster of things to come. The Festival begins on Sunday 15th July at St Thomas’ Church with Philip Greene and Weber’s Clarinet Quintet. We have our popular country house repertoire throughout the festival, and our regular Old Blind Dogs play Tornaveen’s newly refurbished Community Hall. This year, in partnership with Aboyne Arts & Theatre Development Group, we show two classic films, Casablanca and The Life of Brian, and have

18

an evening of jazz with concert pianist, Joseph Long. Following on from last year’s successful partnership with Aboyne Games Committee we have a family ceilidh with the vibrant band Hipflask in the games tent on the green. Other events include talks from mountaineer Rick Allen, author Mary Miers and a walk + talk with Alastair Scott. The full programme will be published in June. Check our website too aboyneanddeesidefestival.org.uk for more information.

Gentle, holistic practices to help realign and restore the body’s innate balance

Bowen Technique Muscle Release Therapy: Equine / Canine / Feline Sahajo Stewart . EMRT . BTAA sahajo@hotmail.co.uk . 07712 760247

“The Bowen Technique is a gentle, holistic practice which helps re-align and restore the body’s innate balance. Bowen resets the body, allowing it to heal, and in so doing helps bring relief from pain and discomfort. “A treatment consists of a series of gentle, rolling moves with frequent pauses between the moves giving the body time to benefit from each set. Bowen moves can be made directly on the skin or through light clothing, targeting muscles as well as addressing ligaments and tendons relating to the stressed muscle groups. Bowen can re-energize the body as a whole or address specific problems such as back and shoulder pain, repetitive strain injuries, headaches and migraines, hip and knee restrictions and misalignments as well as respiratory problems. As stresses and tensions are released, the client is left feeling deeply relaxed.”

Historic Halls Have Modern Purpose writes Duncan Robson

The Aboyne & Glen Tanar Memorial Hall (known as “The Victory Hall”) was originally constructed as the local memorial to those who had fallen in the Great War (WW1). It has since evolved to be the memorial of all those who have given service in armed conflict, and names can be viewed on the memorial chart in the main hall. The building was constructed in 1929, following the designs by the architect Alexander Marshal Mackenzie (who also designed the main façade to the Marischal college in Aberdeen, now home to the Aberdeen City Council). The buildings were created to provide community meeting and function rooms, and at one time included a fully operation orchestra pit as well as a movie projection room. The hall is operated as a non-profit facility, managed and overseen by a board of voluntary trustees. The hall trust is also a registered charity. It costs approximately £30,000 a year to maintain this building. The main hall can accommodate up to 200 people for a catered, seated with tables function, and up to 250

24

for seating in theatre style, or for a dance. The Formaston room is situated at the front of the hall, and is home to the historic Formaston Stane. It is connected to the main hall and contains a fully equipped bar to cater for larger functions. This room can be used for a small meeting or workshop by closing off the sliding partition doors. The conference room, is situated on the first floor near the front of the building and is ideal for hosting meetings, workshops, etc. The room can accommodate up to 45 people seated. Numbers for a workshop will be dependent on the number of tables used.

Village ready for Highland Games

A warm welcome awaits on Saturday August 4th, says Alistair Grant

Our aim at Aboyne is to provide a fun-packed day for all the family, with over 95 events on the field, 80+ trade stands and a large funfair for all to enjoy. From 10.30am until beating the retreat in late afternoon there will be a high calibre field of heavies, with this year’s Aboyne Caber Challenge being the highlight. The caber was dedicated by Her Majesty at last year’s games and with a prize of £600 to the winner of the caber competition if he can toss it. We also have excellent solo pipers, dancers, fiddlers, light event athletes and mass pipe bands to entertain you. There is also a six-mile hill race mid afternoon which attracts around 100 runners. Unique to Aboyne Highland Games is our Clan Village where a dozen Clan Chiefs and their followers will welcome you to their tents and perhaps help you trace your Clan

Ancestry. We also have a team in the overseas tent to welcome visitors from abroad. A welcome ceremony is held there at 3pm hosted by our Chieftain, The Most Honourable, The Marquis of Huntly. I would definitely recommend it. The funfair, one of the largest around, will run all day and into the evening, all ages welcome. I hope you will come and enjoy one of the best Highland Games around and make it a memorable day.

Raised Bed Gardening with Classic Abode’s Moira Gash

Raised beds have many benefits, not least they are a perfect way for people with limited space to enjoy a garden. Some people even put them on their patios which is fine for plants that don’t need much root depth, like lettuce, broccoli, celery, or onions. They can be built from timber, bricks or concrete blocks, filed up with good soil and plenty of organic matter. The solid frames give them a well-defined look. The beds can be as high as you’d like them and prevents soil runoff during rain. Raised beds are narrow, giving access around them without having to walk on the beds, which prevents the soil from being compacted. They are also easier to water and harvest, so are especially good for people who have trouble bending

30

over. They can be ideal for mobility challenged gardeners as they can be spaced to accommodate the movement of wheelchairs. A hard surface would be needed between each bed to allow access. Raised beds are suitable for both vegetables and flowers alike.

GDPR: It’s not too late

The EU General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) came into force on the 25th May 2018 heralding one of the greatest changes in Data Protection Law in the UK for almost two decades, bringing with it a greater focus on individual rights, much greater financial penalties and stricter reporting timelines in the event of a data breach. With eye watering maximum financial penalties in the event of a breach, and a narrower window to report the breach many businesses may hope to bury their heads in the sand and hope for the best. It goes without saying that this is not recommended. Be prepared - with the right preparations, businesses can tackle this issue with confidence and comfort. Here is our 10 step guide to preparing for GDPR. Step 1: Complete a “data audit”. Consider what data your organisation collects and why; Step 2: Determine whether your organisation is a “data controller” - a controller determines the purposes and means of processing personal data, and is subject to the widest remit of obligations under the GDPR; Step 3: Determine whether your organisation is a “data processor” - a processor is responsible for processing personal data on behalf of a controller, and will be subject to specific obligations for the first time under the GDPR; Step 4: Consider your need to collate/ hold/use “personal data” (i.e. any information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person); Step 5: Establish what the legal basis is for the need for “personal data” and ensure this is adequately recorded; Step 6: Review your existing data

protection policies and procedures in respect of the collation, processing, retention and ultimate destruction of personal data; Step 7: Identify any points of weakness where a data breach may occur and take sufficient steps to address the weakness and monitor their effectiveness; Step 8: Implement appropriate protection measures within relationships where personal data is shared with another entity Step 9: Deliver appropriate training to all staff to cultivate suitable data protection practices. Step 10: Don’t panic The most important element in your preparation for GDPR is awareness. We believe that by following a well thought out plan of action, the journey towards this significant change in the way we treat personal data will seem much more manageable and far less daunting. Our team at Mackinnons have the experience to assist local businesses with their preparation. To book a review of your current policies and procedures, please contact our Employment Partner, Nicola Gray.

Where Children Are Always Welcome! Our Sunday Church services start at 11am and even on the days when there is no Sunday School, children are welcome in Church. Children who are restless and cannot take part in all of the service will find an activity box in a corner of the Church where they can amuse themselves. At the Aboyne Games on 4 August we will once again have a walk-in gazebo when we hope to meet many visitors to Aboyne and locals alike. Soon after the Aboyne Games we are looking forward to the Annual Summer Club. This year’s club will run from Monday 13th to Friday 17th August 2018, and there will be plenty of opportunity for fun and learning. The Summer Club is for primary school-age children who in the 2018/19 term will attend primary schools, P1 to P7. Each day the club will feature

Aboyne-Dinnet Church with Christa Markham Bible stories, drama, quizzes, movie clips, interesting crafts and games. To cover the costs of resources and crafts, we ask for a donation of £10 per child per week or if attending for less than the five days, £2.50 per day, payable on arrival on the first day. The maximum cost per family if there are more than two children will be £20. The club will run each day between 10am and 12.15pm. Children from Aboyne, Tarland and Logie Coldstone primary schools will be given a registration form prior to breaking up for their summer holidays. The form will give registration contact details but if you cannot wait until then, please contact our minister, the Rev Frank Ribbons on 013398 87267.
