Welcome to Issue 15 of The Fountain Before you rush headlong into the madness of December’s celebrations, take a minute to catch up on the area’s happenings. I was gutted to hear of the cancellation of the Upstage Panto featured in our Autumn edition; Braemar’s production suffered a similar fate. What is the future of these terrific local events if enough bodies cannot be found to help make them happen? Answers on a postcard... Thank you to all our advertisers and to anyone who contributed copy about their group, organisation or event. Ad rates are rising in the new year (after three and a half years); you can find all the details and prices inside the back page. Remember that community information is FREE to include, so if you have any news, tell me about it. Thanks are due to Dale Kitching, who supplied this issue’s cover photo of Aboyne Academy’s Additional Support Needs department’s S5 pupils working towards their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. You can read more about that on page 7. Wishing you the coolest of Yuletides, Cat Houston – Design/Editor

Aboyne’s first Santa Dash is no turkey says APPC’s Gillian Brynes
This year to raise funds to improve the primary school playground, Aboyne Primary Parent Council are hosting the first Aboyne Santa Dash. These fun runs are becoming increasingly popular all over the world. Dashers dress up in Santa suits and run, walk, skip or stroll round a fun 1.5km course and now you can be part of it. We hope to see you on the village green, Sunday 16th December from 2pm to join us for a festive, fun afternoon. Participants that pre-register get a Santa suit to keep, or you can take part on the day wearing your own festive outfit. There will be a mass warm-up and festive music. To get you in the Christmas mood, hot drinks including mulled wine and hot chocolate will be available, along with mince pies and home baking. There will also be the opportunity to take part in the Turkey Dash – a chance to win a fabulous Sheridan’s turkey for your Christmas dinner. You just need to catch the turkey first (aka Steph Provan, our very own hill-running champion!) Tickets will be available for our grand raffle, with some fabulous hampers and prizes to be won. More information is available on our facebook page: Aboyne Santa Dash.

Academy News Aboyne Academy held a very poignant Remembrance Event last month, organised by history teacher Stewart Whyte and his advanced higher history class. The pupils read out the names of the 364 men who gave their lives in WW1 from the parishes of the school catchment area. A pupil carrying a piece of black/red card came forwards as each name was read out and eventually formed the poppy you can see in the picture. Pupils left standing at the sides represented those who did return and the families of those who did not.
Cover story
Senior pupils from Aboyne Academy Additional Support Needs department have a new mission: helping to keep the school grounds and surrounding area clean and tidy. The S5 pupils have recently embarked on the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award as part of their Senior Phase curriculum.
One element of the award is Volunteering, for which participants have to volunteer for at least an hour a week for three months. Four pupils have chosen to pick litter around the school grounds, Ladywood and St Thomas’s churchyard and neighbouring woods. The team go out twice a week come sun, rain or hail and have proved incredibly enthusiastic, making a real difference in cleaning up both new litter and rubbish which has clearly been lying for some time. Their volunteering complements the work of the pupils from the Academy Ecogroup whose assemblies are working hard to make pupils aware of the dangers that litter can cause to the environment as well as it being unsightly. Well done to Sarah, Brodie, Craig and Douglas for making a great contribution to their community.

No such thing as a free (Pot Luck) lunch? Friday December 28th will see a series of free lunches across the area, organised by Cllr Geva Blackett in a bid to highlight food waste issues. Geva said: “I am keen to tackle food waste and at the same time bring folk together for a free lunch (made with ingredients donated by a supermarket) – with donations if wanted to agreed local causes.” Aboyne will be host to one of them; look out for posters and details on social media. Find updates at “Pot Luck Lunches” on Facebook.

Aboyne Breastfeeding Group is open to all mothers who are currently breastfeeding (and those who support them), and women expecting their first, second, third, forth or even fifth child and are deciding how to feed their newest addition. You do not have to have breastfed previous children to attend the group. You may have previously breastfed, formula fed or mixed it up. If you are interested in finding out more about breastfeeding, coming along to the group is a good way to get an idea of what it is like to breastfeed. We are a friendly group, there’s always hot cuppas and biscuits, and the mothers and peer supporters will be happy to talk to you about any and all aspects of breastfeeding. Pop along to the Community Room in Deeside Community Centre in Aboyne every Monday 10am-11.30am.

Fancy a Health Walk? Take Your Pick... Co-ordinator Kirsty Muirden tells us what’s on offer
Bonty Court Health Walk is a volunteer-led walking group who offer a weekly health walk, starting from Bonty Court (Sheltered Housing Complex) in Aboyne. As with any health walk, our walk is open to all, free, low- level and takes place weekly – meeting every Monday in the ‘Lochnagar Room’ of the complex, at 10am. Our walks are gentle (lasting around 30 minutes) and are usually based within the town of Aboyne – amongst our favourite routes is a walk along ‘Low Road’. We also try to vary our walks by taking trips out throughout the year; previous visits having included a gentle walk along the Deeside Way to the Gliding Club and to the woodland walks/ café at Potarch. Even on days where it is unsuitable to walk, we always try and encourage our group to get moving by doing a short walk within Bonty Court itself and/or practicing some Strength and Balance exercises (designed to improve balance and reduce the risk of falls). Our activities are always followed by a cup of tea/coffee and biscuits back at Bonty Court. This group would warmly welcome any new walkers that would like to join them. Want to feel healthier and happier? Stop wanting, start walking with us! For more information about our group please contact walk leader Josee Kellas on 013398 86830 or Kirsty Muirden, Health Walk Co-ordinator, on kirsty.muirden@nhs.net or 07973 945467. For further information about health walks and the groups in your area, visit www.pathsforall.org.uk or www.aliss.org Finzean Health Walk, which has been going successfully for around six years, is a volunteer-led walking group which offers a weekly health walk around the picturesque rural village of Finzean, meeting every Monday in the park across from Farquharson Court, at 10am. The trained volunteers who lead these walks aim to promote safe walking that is adapted to suit you, and do their best to cater for the different abilities within their existing group. Their regular walks usually make use of the local paths in the village but they will also sometimes take a trip out with Finzean – previous visits having included walks at the Shooting Greens, the woodland/ café at Potarch and parts of the Deeside Way. When weather isn’t suitable for walking, the group also practice a number of Strength and Balance exercises (designed to improve balance and reduce the risk of falls) followed by a cup of tea/ coffee and biscuits back at Farquharson Court common room. For more information about our group please contact walk leaders, Jean Mcleod: ean. mcleod@btinternet.com or Mary Burgess: mraboyne@btinternet.com. Other local health walk groups include: • Banchory Walking to Health, Thursdays & Fridays, 9.55am Meeting point: Banchory East Church. • Lumphanan Health Walk, Fridays, 10.30am Meeting point: Macbeth Arms, Lumphanan.

Would you believe it, but up until last month I had never ventured up the Fungle? I have walked for miles around the village, along the Deeside Way, lapped the Queens Loch more times than I can count and I have forged many paths through various woodland areas. But up, I had not been. Maybe this was a psychological avoidance, as whenever the Fungle has been spoken about to me, it has been in tones of caution and trepidation. To paraphrase one friend the Fungle is “... the worst walk in the world”. I had visions of myself buckled over and breathless at the foot of the climb, let alone actually on the ascent. So, why do it, when there are a myriad of other places to walk around Aboyne? Well, this year, as part of my challenges for charity, I had signed myself up to the Illuminator night race. I do not consider myself an unfit person and the thought of walking 15 miles wouldn’t have phased me at all if it was a non-undulating path from A to B. As I am sure many of you know already though, the Illuminator does indeed undulate. So, it was time for my Fungle fear to be cast aside. After a hearty breakfast I dug out my walking boots and stretchiest trousers, harnessed up the dog, ate another banana for good measure and set off to put the Fun into Fungle. I am pleased to say that the walk wasn’t actually nearly as arduous as I had envisioned. I won’t lie, I did have to stop and catch my breath several times on the way up, but it was so beautiful and tranquil the
in
Lady V’s Shoes A column on village life from Victoria Kennedy rest stops didn’t matter. When I reached The Guard at the top of the Fungle it felt like stepping into Middle Earth and I actually decided to continue to explore further on up. I am so glad that I did, as once I had climbed up through the woods and cleared the trees the view was astounding. Deeside rolled out in front of me like a patchwork quilt. Granted, I didn’t see this view again during the Illuminator due to the dark and snow (yes snow!), but having conquered this section of the walk already, I felt free to just enjoy the event and energy around me. Now that my mental anxiety about the Fungle has been dispelled, I will absolutely be heading up again with my trusty hound by my side. I would love to reach the top of Birsemore Hill and Carnferg on a cool crisp winter’s day and see what our little village looks like from above. The days may be geng shorter and cooler, but that won’t stop me from geng out and about.

Aboyne-Dinnet Church
Aboyne-Dinnet Church has many Christmas celebrations planned. Take a look at the full programme to see what is available. Below are just three events that are worth a special mention. On Sunday, 2 December, a magical evening of Carols and Lessons will start at 18:30 in the Church. This being the first Sunday in Advent, the carols and lessons will help us to reflect on the season of Advent and to look forward to Christmas. After the service refreshments will be served. Friday, 7 December, is Movie Night. It is a chance to enjoy a movie in the Church Hall on Huntly Road. The film is called ‘The Case for Christ’, staring Mike Vogel, Erika Christensen, Faye Dunaway and Robert Forster. This is the story of an award-winning journalist, Lee Strobel, who, working to disprove the newfound Christian faith of his wife, begins chasing down the biggest story of all time, with unexpected, lifealtering results. Doors open at 18:30, the film starts at 19:00. Ticket price is £2 payable at the door, children free. On Saturday, 15 December, there will be the usual Carol Singing in the village. You can join in at some or all of the locations
