Welcome to Issue 16 of The Fountain It’s Spring (already), and we seem to have gotten off lightly with the white stuff and enjoyed numerous sunny days since the Christmas period. I am delighted to welcome a number of new contributions from groups and individuals for this issue. There really are some fabulous things going on across the Aboyne area this quarter. The Mad March Science Festival is back, Aboyne is charging closer towards establishing a Business Association, and Finzean is going great guns in developing its community heritage project. You will also see that, despite having completed her 30 Things For 30 Years Challenge, our columnist Victoria Kennedy has agreed to stay on and keep us up to date with her village happenings. Thank you to all our advertisers and to anyone who contributed copy about their group, organisation or event. You can find all the details and prices inside the back page. A few new discounts have been introduced this year...! Remember that community information is FREE to include, so if you have any news, tell me about it. Cat Houston – Design/Editor

Team takes on Monster Challenge for Alzheimer’s Charities A local-led team is taking on 48-hour monster outdoor challenge to raise money for Alzheimer’s. The event in May, organised by Aboyne resident Calum Cormack, will see the team of 10, including local GP Mark Grandison, kayak 66 miles along the Caledonia canal from Inverness to Fort William, cycle back 72.2 miles and then climb to the summit of Ben Nevis – all within 48 hours. The team is raising funds for both Alzheimer Scotland and the Alzheimer’s Society. It is a disease close to Calum and his family as his mother has suffered with it for a number of years now. The challenge is a repeat of a similar challenge Calum completed with friends 10 years ago. They are looking for as much support as possible and are fundraising through a JustGiving page. You can take a look at their story at www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/48hourmonsterchallenge Cover photo left-right: Colin Feeley, Dr Mark Grandison and Calum Cormack.

Academy News Company partnership leads to Digital Day success
A team from Aboyne Academy reached the shortlist for the Vodafone Challenge as part of Digital Day 2018. Over 150 schools across the UK took part in Digital Day, an initiative run by BIMA to give young people an insight in to the world of technology and digital marketing from those involved directly in the industry. Station Square company Red Evolution partnered with Aboyne Academy to explain what a digital marketing agency does and the career possibilities in the sector. They then set three teams to work on challenges provided by Vodafone, the BBC and The FA. The teams worked very hard on their proposals, researching their target audiences, brainstorming ideas and pitching them to teachers, pupils and Red Evolution who selected the winning idea to put forward to the national final. The impressive Aboyne entry made it to the shortlist for the Vodafone Challenge which is great news for the future digital stars. At the end of Digital Day, Red Evolution invited pupils from all years to attend a talk about the range of career paths available in the digital industry and the different routes taken by their team of coders, developers, designers and marketers. Two of the pupils have decided to spend a week with the agency in Aboyne later this year to gain valuable work experience. Julie Mitchell-Mehta from Red Evolution added, “The enthusiasm and ability of the teams was really encouraging. They were open to new ideas and picked up what was required and got stuck in to the projects very quickly. Having the winning entry shortlisted was a bonus.” Deeside CPR offers FREE training in simple life-saving skills. Participants use a manikin to practise cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and have hands-on experience with a Training defibrillator. The group has taught over a thousand people in the Deeside/Donside area, in village communities, clubs, and schools. It’s heartening(!) to return to help people refresh and update their competency. Equally, we are keen to reach those who have yet to familiarise themselves with this rewarding course. Whether you are an individual, a business, society, school teacher or pupil, we invite you to arrange or join a course and contact tmdcfr@gmail.com or admin@mid-deeside.org.uk 013398 85222.

If you are interested in finding out more about breastfeeding, coming along to the group is a good way to get an idea of what it is like to breastfeed. We are a friendly group, there’s always hot cuppas and biscuits, and the mothers and peer supporters will be happy to talk to you about any and all aspects of breastfeeding. Aboyne Gymnastics and Trampoline club is a charity set up in 2018 to develop both the sport of gymnastics and also to promote health and fitness in young children and the wider community in and around the Marr area. The club trains five days a week and currently has over 200 members a week in the Aboyne Community Centre. In the short history of the club we competed at many competitions all around the North East, Highlands and the Central belt of Scotland. Although the focus of our club is two -piece competitions and training, the club has started to branch out into four- piece training as well. We also run eight recreational classes a week which cater for all abilities. As well as gymnastics we have a wonderful trampoline club, who are pushing the equipment that we currently train on to its limits and the club is focused on raising £17,500 to replace the council’s 15-year-old trampolines with FIG-standard trampolines. Both gymnastics and trampolining are a wonderfully fun sports and the club provides classes for all children and adults aged 5 to 85. If anyone is interested in joining the club, head to our website for more information and to sign up: www.aboynegc.co.uk www.facebook.com/aboynegtc
Support for Stroke Survivors Those people who survive a stroke on Deeside quickly discover there is a limit to the speech therapy or physiotherapy available on the NHS after they leave hospital. However, there is a lot of evidence to show that regular exercise after stroke promotes and sustains physical recovery. In Aboyne we are lucky to have an exercise group which is supported by the charity the Stroke Association. The Deeside Stroke Group meets most Monday mornings in the Auld Kirk Hall beside Aboyne Green throughout the year for exercise sessions with a chartered physiotherapist. We also have an hour’s exclusive

use of the community gym in Aboyne once a week where people affected by stroke can work at their own level. All the exercise sessions are friendly, sociable and enjoyable. Stroke survivors and carers will be made very welcome. For more information, call Eric Sinclair on 07442 502574.

Working for Heart Health with Laura Walker
Heart Health is essential to each and every one of us. So maintaining a healthy heart is a precautionary and preventative strategy to be taken by us all in order to avoid heart disease. Physical activity is central to both the primary prevention of heart disease and long term recovery for people with heart disease. Coronary heart disease (CHD) pertains to the heart and the cardiovascular system as a whole. For example, high blood pressure or hypertension, stroke, heart failure, peripheral heart disease, valvular heart disease and congenital heart disease are all forms of CHD, and can be managed well with medications. But, there is one therapy which if you are preventing, managing or rehabilitating from CHD you should be doing it. Exercise. Given that the heart is elevated during exercise to supply extra blood and oxygen to the working muscles it is dependant on the form of exercise as to the rate and degree by which the heart rate elevates. An aerobic exercise class is a recommended form of exercise to improve the strength and therefore function of the heart. This Cults class consists of exercise in an undulating aerobic curve, which enables participants to exercise for longer. Exercise strengthens the heart and improve function, thus lowering blood pressure, at rest. The unique Strength & Balance classes in Aboyne and Torphins will elevate the heart rate, but not so that ‘out of breath’ is achieved. Using a resistance band with major muscle of the body will naturally elevate the heart rate as force is used against a resistance. Whatever exercise choose enjoy it. If your choose an exercise class, ensure that your instructor is qualified to deal with your health condition/s within a fitness setting.

16 Born and raised in Strichen, Lorna Moon was an author, poet and leading Hollywood screenwriter. For years, she was its highest paid female scriptwriter, writing screen plays for movies starring the likes of Norma Shearer, Gloria Swanson and Lon Chaney Jr. Yet her book of short stories Doorways in Drumorty was banned from Strichen library for 50 years because the town’s inhabitants were horrified at recognising themselves in the books characters! Set in a 1920s gossipy, rural Aberdeenshire community, this witty play is based on that same Lorna Moon book. First produced in 2010, this new production of Mike Gibb’s hugely successful play, ‘Doorways in Drumorty’ will tour to 18 venues across Scotland between this spring with the support of North East Arts Touring and Aberdeenshire Council. 2019 is the 90th anniversary of Lorna Moon’s novel ‘Dark Star’ which provides one of the stories for the play. You can see it Aboyne Community Centre on Saturday April 20 at 2pm.

Ballater Duck Festival set to roll again Preparations for June event well under way, says Mike Forbes
Plans for the fourth Duck Festival are well advanced and the management team are confident that we’ll have another successful event, even better than last year! We hope to have over 70 trade, craft and charity stalls, with entertainment for children including bouncy castle, roundabout, bungee trampolines and donkey rides. As well as the local shops, hotels, restaurants and cafes, there will be several food stalls on the greens including burgers, pizza and donuts. The Ballater Pipe Band will play and local children will entertain us on the stage, plus other musicians around the greens, culminating in a giant inflatable duck race on the River Dee at 3pm. Make a note of the date in your diary – Sunday 2 June 10am-4pm – follow us on Facebook.com/ballaterduckfestival
Extinction Rebellion Aberdeenshire is a new group whose aim is to engage with our political representatives to bring in tougher legislation on climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report released in October concluded that we have only 12 years to avert runaway global warming. Extinction Rebellion (sometimes shortened as XR) is an international social movement that aims to drive radical change, through nonviolent resistance in order to minimise species extinction and avert climate breakdown. Scotland’s emission reduction targets are not in line with the action the IPCC say is required. We are presenting a series of talks about this emergency, and supporting people to engage with their political representatives through letter writing, MSP surgeries and a petition. You can find more information on their Facebook page.

For those of you that have been following my blog, you will know that I am now a lady in my 30s! I have successfully completed all of the challenges that I set myself at the start of 2018 and I am now ready to kick back and relax... On the day of my actual birthday my husband asked me what I wished to do to celebrate. So, I’m now about to contradict myself as, very out of character for me, I didn’t actually suggest a day of relaxation. I suggested a walk up Clachnaben with Gin and Tonic at the top. 30-year-old me is apparently a lot more ambitious and adventurous than 20-yearold me was! But, yes, I did indeed spend my 30th birthday atop a windswept Scottish hill with a can of G&T in hand and wearing enough layers to withstand the temperatures in Siberia. It was a great start to my new decade. Little did I know though, this was not all that was in store for me. The Saturday after my birthday I was happily going about my business at home when friend after friend after friend started to arrive at my door! I was crying (joyfully) and hugging everyone, completely overwhelmed, when my husband announced that my birthday ‘shooting party’ and I were off to the Deeside Activity Park for a morning of Clays. What a treat! I had only shot clays once before but I loved it then and, second time around, I loved it still. Derek, our teacher for the morning, was amazing and we all managed to hit multiple clays while having a giggle too. Then, when we had exhausted our shotgun shells (and were
in
Lady V’s Shoes A column on village life from Victoria Kennedy beginning to lose sensation in our toes) we took a bumpy land rover ride back to the cafe to warm up with lunch. To round of my amazing day, my husband had also hired the Pine Loft at The Boat Inn for a private party that afternoon with yet more friends (and the children’s entertainer Lisa Lollipop - I bet not every 30 year old can say that about their celebrations!!). I ate, I drank, I danced, I got my face painted and truly entered my 30s with a bang! Thank you to everyone that celebrated with me and has supported me this year. My fundraising page is still open, so if there is space for the link to be slipped in, thar would be amazing.

Games Club opens to 12+ writes Jenny Durward-Wright DIGC is a group set up where youngsters on the Autistic spectrum or with any learning or physical disability can meet up and socialise. We have a pool table, a bar football table and run a craft activity each week. This year we also plan bowling nights and other outings. We started off aiming this at young adults but have decided there is a need to lower our age group to include youngsters from about age 12. Members under the age of 16 years MUST be accompanied by an adult. This club has a fabulous friendly atmosphere, we are happy for younger siblings to attend and is as much a support group for parents as their offspring. Please contact the group for more info if you have a younger child or any questions. We are also needing helpers of all ages; no special skills required, just your time. Established 1998

Improved village communications and road safety top agenda 2019 has started off with the great news that MDCC has been successful in gaining planning permission for a new community notice board for the heart of Aboyne. We have lots of ideas on how to best to utilise this new resource but first comes the small matter of funding. Over the coming months we will be fundraising, asking for donations and applying for various grants. Road Safety is important to all of us, that’s why with the help of our local Police officers we have set up a local Roads Safety Group to raise matters such as traffic calming measures. To find out more on all that MDCC are working on, visit us on Facebook: /middeesidecommunitycouncil or email us: middeesidecommunitycouncil@gmail.com

The Commercial TARLAND
At The Commercial, ‘big chain’ mentality is definitely ‘off ’ the menu. Instead, you will find an intriguing mix of Scottish regional cuisine and modern international classics, all prepared in-house using the best of available regional produce. The full menu, along with snacks and light meals, is available all day, and a children’s menu is also available with under-2s eating free. Warm, friendly service in the newly refurbished restaurant, cosy lounge bar or attractive beer garden ensures The Commercial is one not to be missed on your travels. We are situated just a five-minute drive from the A93 at Aboyne or why not stroll the new ‘Tarland Way’ walk then relax and enjoy a meal or light refreshment?
