Welcome to Issue 20 of The Fountain And welcome to a new decade. What will it bring to the Deeside area? Certainly there is much to celebrate, with projects such as the Men’s Shed moving forward (p23) and local acon is also encouraged to help resurrect the Huntly Arms Hotel (see p28). In the aermath of Valenne’s Day, we ask who LOVES Aboyne? Take a look at our middle pages and see if you can guess who said what... Lady V aempts a spring-clean Marie Condo-style on p27 and there’s a new Fun Corner for the kids on p37, thanks to PopUp So Play. Interest in all three magazines in the Myriad Pro stable has swelled again in the new year, with all the spring edions topping 40 pages. Thank you to all our adversers. Interested in adversing your business? You can find details and ad prices inside the back page. I am grateful too to anyone who contributed copy about their group, organisaon or event. Cover Story: Arst’s plans cast a wide net Aboyne arst Stephanie Vandem has a number of projects planned which will see various artworks generated both on our doorsteps and from beyond. Her latest work, FISHING, a series of painngs inspired by today’s fishing industry in the north and north-east of Scotland, is already well under way. Series 1 is due to be displayed at St Thomas Church, Aboyne, from April 6th, with a public opening that evening to which all are invited. Series 2 will be produced aer the summer as Stephanie undertakes the N500 road trip in a motorhome with her 9-yearold son Thomas to gather more research around fishing harbours/communies and also the dramac Scosh landscape. Steph will be hosng a garage gallery at her Minarloch Coage home on March 28/29th to raise funds to cover the trip, by selling art from her previous work, FAMILY ALBUM. Any art patrons who may wish to sponsor are welcome to get in touch. She also has plans for an Art on the Green Mini Painted Doors Community Arts project from spring into early summer. Echoing a previous arts project run by Stephanie, Scene on the Green, she is hoping to relight the flame of community engagement and art producon in the village: “Painted doors are a worldwide movement aimed at beaufying the streets and engage locals with the arts. It’s been adopted by Aberdeen over the past few years and we are bringing the movement to Aboyne.” People of all ages (children under seven must be accompanied) are invited to aend five art sessions at the Deeside

Community Centre, from Saturdays 25th April to 23rd May, to create fantasc drawings on mini doors. These will then be displayed at Aboyne’s Playpark for all to see and enjoy. All materials and expert guidance will be provided. For details and to book, contact info@stephanievandem.com

20 things we
Love about Aboyne... (or thereabouts!) “I love the great places to eat in Aboyne – all different and all good; I love the village green which gives the village a centre and yet a feeling of calm space; I love the scenery around Aboyne – gateway to the Cairngorms Naonal Park but most of all I love the people who make Aboyne such a friendly place”
“Since moving here I have met so many interesng people with such passion about what they do. Arsts, musicians, entrepreneurs, complimentary therapists, farmers passionate about local produce, personal trainers, local markets, volunteers and friends for life”
“We love living here as a family – the access to outdoors (canoeing/ biking/walking etc) is a huge bonus to us as an acve outdoor family. However, what really makes it is the people. We have such a fantasc group of friends and if you don’t have people to share things with and make memories then what do you have?!”
20
“The many walks available in the glorious countryside”
“Aboyne and surrounding area is a playground for all, if you wish to make it so! With a wee light refreshment at the Boat if alcohol is preferred or there is a nice coffee and cake to be had at our lovely wee coffee shops”
The first issue of The Fountain of the new decade 2020 is also, coincidentally, No. 20! So, to celebrate this, we turned to Facebook to ask for 20 things you love about Aboyne. OK, so we didn’t get 20 responses, but most people came up with more than one! What do you think? Count em! “I like the playpark and the cafes and the community centre. It’s friendly and welcoming. I like going to the movies and the inflatable pool sessions” “The farmers market The outdoor life The cafés to go to aer your walk The community centre The village Xmas party To name a few...”
“It’s a community that’s not in your face but does mobilise when needs be”
“I have lots of clients of all ages that always speak very highly of the films that are shown at the community centre and it takes people into Aboyne”
“I like how there are lots of people in a small village. It means you can bump into your friends all the me” (Sage, age 11)
“I love the sense of community and being able to walk into any shop and see a friendly face. Working and living in my community is an absolute pleasure”

Men’s Shed fans met at Aboyne Bowling club to hear the latest and greatest about the construcon progress of the Aboyne and Mid Deeside Community Shed and how it will be operated. About 40 people aended and, aer enjoying a bacon roll and refreshments, were updated on the design, which incorporates low operang cost by employing renewable energy sources combined with high levels of insulaon. The plan is for a broad range of user groups, with a representaon Management Commiee in place. The Men’s Shed itself will be a major user. Significant interest was shown and the Commiee were appreciave of the quesons asked and the feedback and suggesons given. Early spring should see the building completed to a wind and waterght standard followed by fing out and compleng the interior, with job done by the end of the year. An excing year ahead for the community!

Rotary News Hardworking club takes pride in engaging the village’s young people, writes Ruth Powell Our big news so far in 2020 is that Aboyne Primary School has become our second Corporate Rotary Club Member! Head Teacher, Amanda Whiield, pictured on the right, has also facilitated the formaon of a “RotaKids Club” in her school. RotaKids is a fun and excing way for children aged 7-12 to get involved with important acvies in the community while having a great me in the process. Meengs are held regularly in school hours and are conducted by the President, Vice-President and Secretary, who were elected by the members. Their plans are impressive! Around Easter, they will be taking part in a Backpack Appeal which is organised by “Mary’s Meals”, a charity working mainly in Malawi. Later on in the year, the young members have plans to devise a quesonnaire in order to find out what residents wish to see in the community. They are very enthusiasc and eager to get busy to make a difference and make their ideas turn into reality. Great Rotarians in the making!

Our work with Aboyne Academy connues with our Youth Compeons on track for the year so far. Raising funds takes up a lot of our me and we are very grateful to the community who support us at all our events including the Christmas and New Year bag packing in the local Co-ops which broke our previous records for the amount raised. Many, many thanks to all who popped their hardearned cash in our buckets! Since November, we have donated to ShelterBox Internaonal Disaster Relief, Lile Angels Dormitory Project in Southern Uganda, Aboyne Junior Football Club, Aboyne Paths and Tracks Group (for leaflet and map prinng), Braemar Castle Restoraon Project, Cromar Futures Group (Youth), Logie Coldstone Curling Club and The Aboyne and District Community Shed. Not bad in three months! We are really keen to work with local groups who wish to raise funds. We can help arrange events, provide manpower, or even just make cups of tea! We are also prey good at running a bar or a race night at your event. We are always on the lookout for new members or Friends of Rotary. If you would like to know more about what we do, contact mikepowell.obe@gmail.com and Mike will answer your quesons or arrange to meet and discuss what we can do for YOU!

On my morning dog walk today I spoed the first snow drops of the year. Spring is on its way. The days are starng to become longer, cherry blossom will soon scaer the pavements and birdsong will burst forth from the trees once more. Spring is a me for freshness and new beginnings. Springcleaning the house for example - the catharc act of breathing new life and fresh air back into the home. Marie Kondo took the world by storm last year with her cluer free and joy inducing organisaonal skills. If it did not spark joy or serve a purpose, it was gone. I feel the need for this movement in my home. Over the years I have amassed a huge amount of ‘stuff ’. I cannot count the number of items that, at one point, must have been of some senmental value to me. Now they just seem to take up room. It is me for a house cleanse. Marie Kondo advises to start not by room, but by category. I think for me this will have to be clothes. My wardrobe is rammed with everything from kaans to riding boots. I should point out that I have no summer holidays planned and also that I have not been on a horse since before I was pregnant with my son – that was nearly eight years ago. I also have a good smaering of clothing items that will never fit me again in my wardrobe arsenal. That denim mini teases me every morning. I really don’t know why I let it do it to me. And yet these items have moved with me, twice, simply to

Lady V’s Shoes
A column on village life from Victoria Kennedy be put on a different shelf or hanger. Other than dust catchers, they serve no purpose in my life now. So, this Spring I shall embrace the Marie Kondo way. Gone will be the neon fingerless gloves, the oversized novelty hair bands and faded tourist T-shirts. Instead I will have a streamlined and joyful wardrobe, ready for fresh beginnings. Then maybe, just maybe, I will be ready to take on the rest of the house…

This is your MP and MSP The Huntly Arms in Aboyne is on the market and is no longer trading as a hotel, with just the bar open for business. The Community Council has recently brought together a group of individuals with the interest and experse to see what might be done to bring the hotel back to life. The group is being supported by Aberdeenshire Council, and is sll at an early stage in finding a viable way forward for this iconic building, which has had a coaching inn at the site since the 1400s and was once regularly used by Queen Victoria en route to Balmoral. There has been widespread community concern about the possibility of the business completely closing, potenally leaving Aboyne with a dilapidated building at its heart. Get in touch if you can help.

Pain in the neck?
Did you know the average human head weighs between 8-10lbs? That’s the same as a bowling ball! The reason that we mostly don’t noce this is because our neck is set up with its own shock absorbing system called your cervical lordosis. This refers to the gentle curve in your neck that helps with the normal weight balance of your head. However, in a modern lifestyle we are all spending far too much me in a slouched posion with a Forward Head Carriage (FHC). Prolonged periods of me sing at a desk, driving, stress and being aached to phones and tablets is causing nothing short of a postural epidemic! Studies have shown that for every inch your head moves forward, another 10lbs of force is put through the joints and muscles in your neck! This effect is similar to carrying something close to your body versus carrying it at arm’s length.
34
The real problem here is the length of me we spend in this FHC posion. Imagine how many hours today you have spent looking at a screen of some kind, driving or slouched on the sofa. When you think about it that way, it’s hardly a surprise that so many people suffer with neck pain and headaches. Here at Banchory Spinal Health we are a team of highly trained team of Chiropractors, Osteopaths and Massage therapists; experts at helping our paents understand the underlying course of their pain and providing specialist treatment without the use of medicaon. Curious about what we do? Give us a call on 01330 824040 or email info@banchoryspinalhealth.co.uk – or why not aend our Open Day on 28th March where we are offering FREE spinal health checks. Booking is essenal for this event so get in touch to avoid disappointment. Can’t wait unl the 28th March? Bring this page for 50% off a Full New Paent Consultaon with us – this offer expires 30th April!
