Hospital reprieved (for now...) Aer months of uncertainty, Aboyne Hospital appears to have been given a lifeline during the ongoing restructure of in-paent services in Grampian. The Bellwood Road site was closed during the pandemic and, as me passed, Aboyne residents and their representaves wondered if the facility would be allowed to remain so. But the manager of the Aberdeenshire Health and Social Care Partnership (AHSCP) announced at the end of October: “As you know there is extreme pressure on the whole health and social care system and much of that pressure is exacerbated by a lack of staff across all areas of service provision. Thankfully through the hard work and dedication of our Senior Charge Nurses and ably supported by the wider team, we have been able to recruit a number of staff to both Morven Ward at Glen O’Dee and Aboyne Community Hospital. Meaning we will be able to open both wards.
“It is our intention to begin re-opening Morven Ward as soon as possible and to start to admit as soon as we are able. As we start to re-open Morven there will be a period of transition where we will be unable to run both wards at full capacity whilst we ‘on board’ our new starts. We have escalated the need to get our new staff into post as soon as possible and we are hopeful that we may be able to speed that process up. “We truly hope that this will remain stable for the coming months however we are acutely aware that with the best will in the world things can change at short notice. As an SMT we are hopeful that we will be able to sustain the operation of both wards, however we may need to revisit this decision at short notice and revert back to a single ward for Deeside in-patient services should we find ourselves without the staff we need. We are also very aware that this decision may increase the pressure on our staff, and we would ask you to continue to support our community teams, GP practices and the wider community throughout this winter.”

Y@H Bundles of Joy Here at young@heart deeside we are delighted to let you know that we are running our Wee Bundles of Christmas Cheer campaign again this December. Last Christmas we hand-delivered free goodie bags to the most vulnerable older people in the Howe of Cromar and it was a great success. This year we are extending the deliveries to Aboyne and hundreds of nominaons have been made by the public to treat an an older person who may be family, friend or neighbour with a free Christmas parcel. The parcels include some Christmas treats, handknied items, books, diaries and poed bulbs and the nominaon process was assisted by the Coop and Corner House in Aboyne and Tarland Toy Shop and Tarland Paper Shop. The goodie bags will be delivered to the care homes of Allachburn and Alastrean as well as Cromar Court in Tarland and Bonty Court in Aboyne, and we are thrilled that Aboyne Academy pupils will be helping us this year to spread the Christmas cheer. You can follow us on Facebook at youngatheartdeeside or our website www. youngatheartdeeside.org.uk
Throughout the season of Advent the Community Life Group of Aboyne-Dinnet Church will also invite the Congregaon and the public to contribute to a ‘Reversed Advent Calendar’. The idea is that between 28th November and 25th December people can donate a suggested food or toiletry item which ulmately will go into the FareShare shed opposite the Church Hall. In that way someone locally will benefit from the gis brought. The ‘Reverse Advent Calendar’ will be posted on the noce board and on Facebook in order that everyone will know what is needed.

Firetrail blazes into bikepacking market
One year aer the specialist bike retailer Aberdeenshire Bicycle Works first opened their doors in Aboyne, it has rebranded as Firetrail, and expanded with an ambious new online business catering to bikepacking, gravel and enduro mountain bike cyclists. Husband and wife team, Richard and Alex Lawes, Firetrail’s development further cements Aberdeenshire’s reputaon as a leading cycling desnaon and offers vital cycling supplies and repair services. The bike shop is located in an ancient coach house within Aboyne Castle grounds, but Firetrail also offer click and collect and UKwide postal delivery via their brand-new online plaorm. This summer has seen Firetrail become the regional hub for bikepacking and adventure cycling. The team has been busy advising cyclists on which bike, camping
equipment and bikepacking luggage to choose, helping them to get ready for journeys big and small. The shop’s locaon at the gateway to the Cairngorms Naonal Park makes it the perfect launch pad for adventure cycling and world class enduro trails alike. Alongside its retail and workshop offerings, Firetrail provides a purposebuilt training facility that offers courses in bike maintenance, first aid and navigaon. Firetrail also offers female-only bike maintenance courses, delivered by a highly qualified female mechanic and tutor.

Fancy this for an office view?
It’s not every workplace that provides a historic country house seng, extensive landscaped grounds and magnificent views. But at Alastrean House that’s just what you get. A former retreat for Royal Air Force veterans, and before that the family home of the MacRoberts, the impressive building is now a care home set in the tranquil countryside of Tarland, Aberdeenshire. A £160,000 refurbishment of the property aer fire damage in 2016 set a gold standard in the area, and today the home provides care across 51 ensuite rooms and five spacious lounges. Uniquely, Alastrean also offers free accommodaon to staff, and a mileage allowance. It is also offering £2,000 signon payments for certain roles. With its spectacular rural seng, it’s ideal for people who want a change of pace or a move to the country. Staff at the home got their ‘fieen minutes of fame’ this year when a corporate video for Balhousie Care Group, which manages the property, was filmed there. “There was no queson that Alastrean fit the bill for us. It’s a stunning building and the staff were brilliant at displaying our values, goals and high quality care, all of which were captured on camera,” says Gillian Drummond, Brand & Communicaons Manager at Balhousie Care Group. Alastrean’s popularity, and the hard
work of its staff, is shown by its excellent reviews and family feedback. In one recent leer to the Home Manager, a relave raved: “We have seen a big improvement in my granny’s wellbeing since moving to Alastrean. The carers and nurses look aer her so well and also reassure us as a family that she is OK. Knowing she is safe and care for is a huge reassurance to us as a family.” It helps that the home has a great reputaon in the community too. Earlier this year it hit the headlines when Anne Ellington, a woman from Aberdeen, made a bundle of beauful ‘fidget quilts’ specially designed for people with demena. They proved so popular there were requests from more care homes across the group!
Alastrean is currently adding to its team. The care home is looking for people to fill carer and domesc roles, with hours that are flexible to suit applicants’ needs. Interested? Like a Duck to Water...
Cat tries swimming lessons for grown-ups
I never learned to swim properly. I take full accountability for this. I could have taken lessons at any me in my (cough) years, but there are a few historical reasons for this blip in my skill set that I’ll bore you with if you’ll let me... I was one of four children, so my parents maybe would have struggled to take us all swimming nowadays. In the 1970s, no one cared about safety raos, but my mum couldn’t swim very well, and my dad had a dodgy ear drum, so that was that. My first taste of swimming lessons then was age 10, with my primary school class, at the now-consigned-to-history “Swimming Baths” in... wait for it... Bath Road, Luton, sunny Bedfordshire. We were divvied up into those that could swim, and those that could not. The pros were let out into the biiiig pool to no doubt connue their careers as champion divers, skiers and all-round sporty types. Us non-swimmers were consigned to the “baby group”, and a teacher who closely resembled a character from a Far Side cartoon (complete with horn-rimmed specs and a beehive hair-do), who liked to “tap” children’s heads in the water with her foot from poolside, and made her dislike of the younger generaon known at every available opportunity. Cue years of embarrassment at “fun” teen gatherings at the pool, unable to enter the deep end or peel off the diving board like my semi-aquac peers. Then I had my two girls, and once we’d got past the panic staons stage of floats, inflatables, and their own lessons (a far beer experience than mine), it occurred to me that perhaps swimming would be a good exercise for me to take up, my knees having taken a dislike to my previous escape of choice, running.
Again with no guidance to hand (or none I would brave taking up anyway) I developed my own “technique” to get through lengths, a kind of breast-crawl hybrid, but my inability to put my face in the water or breathe usefully le me gasping at the side like a forlorn guppy. Finally, rescue has come in the shape of Aboyne Community Centre and Swimming Pool’s new Adult Swimming Lessons on Monday evenings. I joined about half a dozen other like-minded “Improvers” for 45 minutes with the lovely Veena. By the end of the first lesson, where she swily established who could do what and what they wanted out of the experience, I was (almost) finding space to breathe between lunges. Less guppy, more puffer fish. I have some way to go but I am confident I will get there with this six-week course. As a long-me spoiled member of a very lovely leisure club in my home town of Ballater, I had wondered if a local authority pool might prove too chilly. But I needn’t have worried. The pool temperature was just perfect (especially once you start moving around!) and I was pleasantly surprised by the ambiance of the (also 1970s built) 25m pool. The lights and high ceilings, and the small numbers of people in the session, all added up to the feeling of a safe space in which to gently concentrate on learning the necessary, at your own pace. Time to flap those gills? It’s never too late and there’s a separate session for Beginners too. Cost is just over £50 for six weeks, with concessions available. More space will be allocated to the Adult Lessons according to demand. Email aboyneLTS@aberdeenshire.gov.uk to register your interest or to book a space.

New business has its sights set on you The opportunity is now available to experience live firing with .22 Calibre semi-automac and bolt acon rifles at a new 25m outdoor range near Tarland. Since opening in the late summer, Line of Sight has conducted introducon shoots and connuaon training for over 100 people; some just wanng to experience shoong, others looking for a new sport or to gain experience prior to applying for a Firearms Cerficate. If you are over the age of 14 and are looking for something a lile bit different, you won’t be disappointed. What started as a simple idea for a family acvity during lockdown soon turned into a plan for a small business. Over the past 12 months we have worked hard with family and some very good friends to build a safe and friendly environment for learning. The acvies
are carried out by an instructor with over 35 years’ experience gained in the UK and overseas.
“Amazing session learning the sport of target shooting at Line of Sight. If you’re looking for a fun, safe activity to do with your friends or family while you’re in the Cairngorms this should be on your list. “Paul made my wife and I feel comfortable and safe from the get-go, gave us a safety briefing, familiarised us with the rifle, helped us get used to the sighting system and then supervised us while we started to shoot targets in his purpose-built range. “We enjoyed it so much we debated going back again the next day!” Trustpilot Review

Lady V’s Shoes
A column on village life from Victoria Kennedy Now that we are officially in November, is it ok for me to use the C word? Yes? You’re sure? Ok, here I go – Christmas! Yes, it is that me of year again. Soon we will all be listening to Mariah Carey and Michael Bublé on repeat as twinkling decoraons once more begin to adorn the home fronts of Aboyne. And I for one am here for it. There has been a lot of prey heavy news happening in the world of late, and the prospect of sparkling lights and
long cosy nights is just what the doctor ordered. However, before I get too carried away with reclining in front of the fire while quaffing a mulled beverage or two, I plan on geng all of my Christmas shopping done. But unlike previous years, this year I am going to be doing this exclusively from local shops. I am so blown away by the skill of Aboyne’s residents. My once beloved Yankee Candles have been replaced by KSC’s wax melts and candle ns, with my current favourite smell being Arabian Nights. The dusky escape that comes with each melt compliments these longer evenings perfectly. I also recently purchased an exclusive Aboyne scented candle by KSC from Deeside Creaons in Staon Square. I always like to give gis that I would like to receive so, needless to say, these will be a key part of my Christmas shopping list this year.
Another gi that I know I will be buying for my nearest and dearest is a plant from The Secret Garden. Last Christmas, I received a monthly plant subscripon from The Secret Garden (thank you, Mummy), and as cliché as it sounds this really has been the gi that keeps on giving. I loved receiving a new poed lovely at the start of each month, and each plant sll brings a smile to my face every day. At a me of year when we can become overwhelmed by mass produced plasc, seeing something natural is a pleasing change. I hope that those who receive a plant from the PK household feel the same way as I did, and sll do, about their gi. Then, the pièce de resistance, I will be geng some fesve baked goods from Spatula and Spoon. I follow Spatula and Spoon on Instagram, and every me I see a new post, I find myself wisully salivang. Louise’s creaons are masterful, and I certainly foresee some fesve cookies in my nieces’ futures. I won’t lie, there are likely some cookies in my future too. Aer all, it is the me of year to eat, drink and, most importantly, be merry. Wishing you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas, V Xx
