Let it... Welcome to Issue 7 of The Fountain Yup, it’s cold outside. But the frosty days allow ample opportunities for capturing the beauty around us in a different hue. The Fountain is grateful to Lumphanan School P7 pupil Erika Gilbert for her stunning shot on this issue’s front cover; more photography by her classmates can be found on page 6. It’s time to get your skates on as the organisers of the Winter Festival pull off yet another fundraising coup to bring a special festive treat to the village. Aboyne Academy tell us all about their recent Careers Fair, an event they hope to repeat, and we meet yet more new faces from the business community, as the village sees some more new ventures open up. Robots feature on p22 and we get a bit spooky too... This issue has a touch of the Ebenezer about it, as technical gremlins have led to endless email problems this (shorter) quarter and other constraints have forced a reduction in page number. Please note new email address below to send all your group info, ad enquiries and events to. Nonetheless, I hope you enjoy the Winter issue of The Fountain. I wish a truly terrific festive season to you all. Cat Houston – Design/Editor

On The Calendar Village school launches picture-perfect annual fundraiser Stunning views of Lumphanan and its surrounds feature on a new calendar just released by Lumphanan School Parent Council. This is the fourth year the fundraising group has produced a calendar, and this year they asked the school’s pupils to take photos in and around Lumphanan to submit for inclusion. Some of the resulting images can be seen here, and also on the front cover of this issue’s Fountain Magazine! The Parent Council’s Gillian Fraser said: “In the past the calendar has raised over £1,000 each year. This money goes towards bus trips, books and audio CDs for our library, specialist visitors etc etc, basically all the things that are not always provided by the council.” The calendar costs £4, and can be posted for an additional cost. It can be found in the Meet Again Tea Room, Torphins Chemist, Tarland Toy Shop, or by contacting Gillian on 013398 83517. They make ideal gifts for those near and far, as well as keeping you in order for important dates in 2017.

It’s Time To Get Your Skates On...

Fundraising efforts mean ice rink IS coming, writes Kerry Anderson

******************* ******************* ******************* ******************* We are well under way with the

organising of this year’s Aboyne Winter Festival. The committee has been working hard with fundraising events and we are delighted with the donations we have received from local business, Donside businesses and individual donations. If anyone else would like to offer a donation, all money raised goes into the festival and to ensure it can run each year. We are well on track to be able to bring the ice rink to enhance the festival. We can only thank the community for their support. We are also delighted to be able to offer horse bus rides, kindly donated by Grampian Transport Museum. It’s a marvellous vehicle given to the museum from the Edinburgh Co-op, where it was used up to the 1960s and Nicola and Aboyne Slimming World are kindly donating the fee required for the Clydesdale horse. We also hope to have a few other tricks up our sleeve and few details still to confirm. There is still space for anyone wishing a stall on the day to sell items suitable for the week before Christmas! You would require your own gazebo/shelter, please contact us if you are interested. Lastly but not least we are looking for prizes for our grand raffle on the day so if you are able to help please contact us, we would be most grateful. aboynewinterfestival@hotmail.com Aboyne Winter Festival is set to take place on Sunday December 18th and will feature a visit from Santa and his reindeer as well as various festive foods and entertainments.

Deeside Orchestra Seeks New Members says Lucy Niblock You can get a taste of Pinter at Aboyne Theatre on Thursday December 15. Following their hit run on Broadway, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart return to the West End stage in Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land (15), broadcast live from Wyndham’s Theatre, London. Tickets available from the community centre foyer box office.

Deeside Orchestra are a local amateur orchestra, formed by well-known Aboyne violinist Andy Linklater over 30 years ago. We meet to rehearse every Tuesday in Victory Hall, Aboyne, at 7.30-9.45pm. The orchestra has about 25-30 regular members, however we are very keen to recruit new members to swell our numbers and help us to make an even better sound! All orchestral instruments are welcome, but we are especially keen to hear from any brass players (trumpet/trombone/French Horn/tuba), oboe, lower strings (cello and double bass). We usually give three concerts a year, in November, early new year and summer, and play a wide range of popular classical music. No audition is required to join, but a rough guide to our standard would be Grade 5 or above. We are a relaxed, friendly bunch so if you fancy coming along to join us, or just to find out a bit more, please come along on a Tuesday evening, call 01330 850775 or 01330 850578, or take a look at our website www.deeside-orchestra.co.uk. Our next concert will be held on Saturday 4th February 2017 in the Victory Hall, Aboyne. This will be a Concert Party to celebrate the new year with music from the orchestra, singing and some special surprises, and promises to be a great night, so save the date!

Academy News Aboyne Academy held its first Careers Fair in September. The event, organised by a group of teachers, pupils and representatives from our business partner ARCADION, hosted over 30 employers and organisations based on research into pupils’ interests. The careers fair was held during school hours for pupils and staff and after school for parents. The event brought businesses and ex-pupils together to talk to students about opportunities for their future with a wide range of organisations represented, ranging from the Armed Forces to accountancy firms and solicitors. Some universities and colleges were also represented. Ex-pupils were invited along to talk to pupils about their experiences after leaving school, which proved hugely popular with everyone who attended these sessions. The day was supported by the school’s business partner, ARCADION, who sponsored the event. School hospitality pupils worked with ARCADION staff to provide refreshments throughout with various members of the ARCADION team also present to speak to pupils about all aspects of their business. ARCADION specialises in Offshore Accommodation, providing quality, tailored, full-circle accommodation solutions and is dedicated to making life offshore comfortable and efficient. Prefects and the Careers Fair team assisted with the logistics and made sure the day ran smoothly. The event was a huge success and following positive feedback from teachers, pupils, and employers the decision has been taken to run regular career fairs as it provides pupils with a better understanding of life after education and the opportunities that are on offer in the local area. The careers fair team would like to thank everyone involved, especially all the businesses, organisations and ex-pupils who came along and made the day such a success.

These Hills Can be Murder... Go For Gold’s Simon Sawers takes us on a tour of Grahams This month I’m featuring the Grahams: Scottish hills between 2,000 and 2,500 feet in height with at least 150m drop all around. There are a good number of fine Grahams on our doorstep and at this time of year they make fine winter outings, being lower, involving shorter walks and are readily accessible. In mid-November I took myself off for a three-day campervan trip to Glen Artney near Comrie to bag some Grahams. It was a fine few days with crisp dry air and a chill breeze higher up. Having climbed the Graham of Ben Venue near Aberfoyle on the way, I then had a full day on a lovely round encompassing the Grahams of Stuc na Cabaig (Beinn Dearg) and Mor Bheinn. Superbly clear views and not a soul in sight! The next day saw me atop Uamh Bheag and with frequent snow showers sweeping through it was time to head home! Glen Artney, by the way, has an interesting old church and the Highland Boundary Fault runs along the whole glen with the Highlands to the North and the Lowlands to the South. Our local Grahams include Pressendye, Mona Gowan, The Buck, Ladylea Hill, Geallaig Hill and Cooks Cairn. Each of these hills is only a short drive from home for those of us who live in inland Aberdeenshire and with the shorter daylight hours are perfect for a short and vigorous tramp. We are extremely lucky to live at the foot of Pressendye and an excellent route is to park in Tarland and do the round from there which takes 4 to 5 hours. Alternatively park near Tilly Lodge on the B9119 and take in the beautiful Queen’s View

16

overlooking the Howe of Cromar. On returning to Tarland you have a choice of two pubs or the coffee shop in the pharmacy for refreshments. We belong to the very active XXL Hillwalking Club with weekends away most months to various parts of Scotland and a local day walk once a month. We are a very sociable group with a number of social activities throughout the year including our annual dinner and ceilidh coming up soon in Ballater. Non-members are very welcome to come along on walks or socials to try us out – see http://xxlhwc.yolasite. com/ for details. Here’s a suggestion for you: Perhaps consider joining a hillwalking club as a New Year’s resolution! Merry Christmas to you and wishing you happy hillwalking in 2017! This is the fourth in a series of articles about hillwalking. Simon Sawers is an avid hillwalker, having completed all the Munros, and is a qualified Mountain Leader. He runs Go for Gold! Expeditions, providing Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and Golf DofE residentials for young people.

Grahams were first listed by Fiona Torbet, nee Graham, who tragically went missing in Kintail in 1993 and who was subsequently found in the garden of the guest house she was staying in. The son of the owner of the guest house was charged with murder, convicted and then died in prison in 2007. A terrible story of the death of an incredible lady who loved the mountains which is told in a book called “Blood in The Glens”. A further Christmas present idea is the SMC publication “The Grahams and the Donalds” which details the routes of all 224 Grahams.

Ghostly Goings-on...

It’s Christmas (almost), and every Christmas needs a ghost story. We took to Facebook to ask if Aboyne had any ghosts and, if so, where did one go to find them..? If you know of any more, or more details on those mentioned here, we’d love to hear about them... A few respondents referred to Aboyne Castle’s Green Lady but there was some confusion as to where to find her, as the old castle had been demolished. A former tenant of Charleston Lodge told us about a female apparition who regularly made her presence known: “She was a lovely ghost. She would move things around on the third floor. I’m not sure if the stories are true but supposedly there was a maid that killed her children and herself in that room. Also Alistair Aboyne’s Grandmother died in that room too. She would come and sit on my bed. You would just feel her weight on you. Feel her touch your skin. “She didn’t like males in the house and would be more annoying and noisy. We actually got used to her. Only saw her once, going upstairs. She floated up to the third floor but yet you heard her step on the stairs! She was dressed sort of maidlike with a white pinny hat. It was fleeting and only for a second. You always heard the latch open and close. Lots of little incidences in that house. Weird but we, as a family, actually missed her when we left.”

The advent of war may have had an impact on the village’s ghostly sightings: “I’ve been told there are stories about the boys who died in WW1 being heard still singing their way home from the pub to Golf Road.” A few other local hostelries also got a mention: “I used to work at the Huntly Arms Hotel cleaning the rooms and I am positive they are haunted. When I was alone it always felt like someone was there with you, very eerie, but not a scary eerie. It was the 60s corridor that I always had the feeling that someone was with me. And the cellar, that was one place I just would not go.” More specifically: “Room 60 and 61 of the Huntly. You never wanted to be up there on your own. Too scary. You just heard someone all the time and went to check and nothing.” And...: “The Boat Inn has some ghosts. Two children run around in what was once the function room and is now the rooms, so they run between the walls laughing. There is also an old man in the bar, who likes to move glasses and move the bar stools when the pub is closing.” So, believer or not? If you have spooky tale to tell about your workplace or home, get in touch. E: catrionahouston@yahoo.co.uk Find The Fountain Magazine on Facebook

Check Out the New Kids on the Block Some new faces in town mean business. Welcome to Aboyne!

Exciting developments have been afoot in Station Square as two new businesses take root. The Whistle Stop Triple Shop has taken the unit next to Monkey Business, which has been vacant for some time. Elaine and Andy Robertson opened the store on November 16th and took the name to reflect the building’s former use as a railway station and also the triumvirate of goodies they have opted to sell: toys, arts and crafts, and traditional sweets. New cafe Spider On A Bicycle was set to open on November 26th following weeks of crowdfunding, renovating, decorating and product testing by sisters Hollie and Emma Petrie. Their aim is to create a warm, welcoming space in the largest middle unit, to be enjoyed by members of the community and visitors alike, very much inspired by New Zealand cafe culture. Alongside their passion for homemade food created using fresh ingredients, supporting small local business is a central part of the cafe’s ethos. Finally, Dinnie’s is a new venture opening soon on Viewfield, and also on a site that has been begging for a food or indeed any business offering for quite some time since the previous tenant vacated. Both a fish and chips and an ice cream venue, Dinnie’s were completing the recruitment process as The Fountain went to print. The very best of luck to all new businesses starting up. Have you started a new business in the Aboyne area? Want a mention? Get in touch.

Baby, It’s COLD Outside by Classic Abode’s Moira Gash

www.classicabode.co.uk

At this time of the year most people think there is not much that can be done in the winter garden. However, if weather conditions are kind, there are a number of tasks that could be undertaken, including: Now is a great time for planting deciduous hedging and bare root trees as the roots will have a chance to develop. Clumps of perennials that you weren’t able to divide in late autumn can be done early spring – providing the earth is dry enough and not frozen! Make sure the crowns are kept free of rotting leaves as this can be detrimental to the new growth. When the weather allows, add drainage to your lawns. This can be done with a fork. Plunge it in and work it back and forth to create a good-sized hole. Brush a mix of horticultural sand and soil improver into the hole to stop it clogging. The worms will do the rest! Don’t forget to feed garden birds – particularly after bad weather as seeds and food sources etc may be scarce, so encourage wildlife in by providing a variety of feeds. If the weather prevents outside activity then take a look through the catalogues and websites for exciting new perennials and summer flowering bulbs to order and plan your 2017 garden.

Counting Blessings

Churches’ Letter

Dear Friends, There is a Danish term currently in vogue that seems to describe this – the concept of ‘hygge’. In essence, hygge means creating a nice, warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people around you. The warm glow of candlelight is hygge. Friends and family – that’s hygge too. It’s about spending time in the present moment. But hygge is primarily about finding joy and contentment in the ordinary. Looking for the sparkles of light in the darkness. Something which seems very apposite at this time of year. As we approach Advent and Christmas with all its attendant excitement, it can be easy to focus on everything you want to do, on creating the perfect day. Looking to make things special, pushing the boat out. The church seasons teach us to live in the here and now, not to strive forward, and not to look longingly backwards, but to be where we are. And to celebrate that time and space. You may be frantically preparing for a house-full of guests, expecting a home full of fun and laughter. It may be that you find little in your life at the moment to celebrate; that you are struggling with illhealth or loneliness or financial worries. For those of us who are Christians, Advent and Christmas are about something very ordinary; and something extraordinary. About the anticipation of a birth, and the knowledge that the birth ushered in something spectacular. About a God who not only loves us, but loved us so much he sent his Son. In the centre of our hearts and homes, the source of joy and love and peace, of ‘hygge’, is Jesus himself – love without strings. Amidst all the emotions, all the preparations, all the celebrations, hold on to this: God loves you who you are. And that really is the greatest gift.

Do feel free to join us at any of our celebrations over the Christmas period. With every blessing, Rev Vittoria Hancock, Rev Frank Ribbons, Father Chris Brannan. St Thomas’s News St Thomas’s has had a busy couple of months, with a wedding, our AGM, the installation of our new heating system, and puppet-making workshops. October saw us celebrating the marriage of Donald and Leanne Thomson, of Tarland, and we had the pleasure of welcoming back one of our previous rectors, Kate Gibson to take the service. The beginning of November saw the AGM come and go. And we have had our new heating system installed, meaning we now have a warm church building, which is far more useable day to day. The animal theme continued, with the puppets on display and blessing of animals who had come to join in. And plenty of cake! We’re moving on now into Advent and Christmas. Our Christingle service on December 4th at 11.15am will have the theme of ‘Angels, angels, all around’. The ecumenical service of Nine Lessons and Carols will be on the 11th December at 6pm, complete with a visit from the ‘Teabag Angel’. On Christmas Eve we have our Crib Service at 4pm – you are welcome to come dressed as one of the characters from the Nativity story; and then our midnight service at 11.30pm. Christmas Day we meet at 11.15am for our Christmas Communion. We will be celebrating the New Year with a special service of Carols and Prayers at 3pm on New Year’s Day. You are very welcome to join us at any or all of these services.

The Commercial TARLAND

At The Commercial, ‘big chain’ mentality is definitely ‘off ’ the menu. Instead, you will find an intriguing mix of Scottish regional cuisine and modern international classics, all prepared in-house using the best of available regional produce. The full menu, along with snacks and light meals, is available all day, and a children’s menu is also available with under-2s eating free. Warm, friendly service in the newly refurbished restaurant, cosy lounge bar or attractive beer garden ensures The Commercial is one not to be missed. We are situated just a five-minute drive from the A93 at Aboyne or why not stroll the new ‘Tarland Way’ walk then relax and enjoy a meal or light refreshment?
