TASTE OF SANFORD J O DY H I L L
Over 30 local Restaurants, Craft Brewers & Sweet Shops gathered together to offer up their finest dishes, drinks and delights to an overflow crowd. You may have seen the slogan, “This is Sanford…have you seen us lately?” On the evening of Monday, November 14, 2016 that message was brought to life when the Greater Sanford Regional Chamber of Commerce hosted the 10th Annual Taste of Sanford. Over 30 local Restaurants, Craft Brewers & Sweet Shops gathered together to offer up their finest dishes, drinks and delights to an overflow crowd, and along with the United States Marine Corp’s “Toys for Tots” program, to kick off the spirit of giving at the Sanford Civic Center. Attendees were treated to a delightful evening of Jazzy Zydeco music sponsored by Seminole Harley Davidson, while enjoying Cocktails, Hors D’oeuvres and Sweet Confections with 500 fellow “Foodies!” Offerings ranged from Soul Food to Seafood, from Old School to New, from Historic Downtown to The West Side - all part of Sanford’s rich and diverse culinary landscape.
2
Food was not the only thing on display that night. True to its name, “The Taste of Sanford” included luxury autos, motorcycles, and a whole host of products and services from a wide array of local vendors who play an integral role in the success of Sanford’s restaurant industry and businesses. Sam’s Wholesale Club sponsored the 1st Annual “Community Culinary Achievement Award” which was presented to Chef Michael O’Brien Sr. of “The Corner Café – Home of Gourmet To Go,” for his contribution in helping to drive the burgeoning restaurant scene in Sanford. If you would like to see more images from this wonderful evening’s festivities, or would like to tag one of your favorite eating or drinking establishments, please visit the FaceBook page, Taste of Sanford. FILM FESTIVAL in Sanford PUTS SPOTLIGHT ON SHORT FILMS G E N E K RU K E M E Y E R
LIKE COMEDIES? THE LOVE YOUR SHORTS FILM FESTIVAL in Sanford has ‘em. How about animation and documentary? The annual festival has those, too, along with other categories by filmmakers from around Florida and the world. The short-film festival, to be screened Feb. 9-12 at the Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center, was started in 2011 by a group of friends who wanted to add a new event to the community arts scene and promote business in the city. The idea of the festival was proposed by Nancy and Gene Kruckemyer of Sanford as they were playing trivia one night at a bar with teammates Christina and Nelson Beverly and Frank Loose. They readily agreed with the idea and the group secured the festival’s domain name that night. The festival has since grown through the community support of friends, volunteers and sponsors. “Today, with all the social media, YouTube and other platforms to watch videos, people are used to and appreciate shorter content,” said Nancy Kruckemyer. “Short films have become popular because viewers want to see something and quickly move on to the next.” They’ll have that opportunity again at the 2017 event. The final lineup of films hasn’t been determined, but the 2016 festival showed 61 films from 11 countries. Filmmakers and fans from all around the globe have attended the festival, many for the first time coming to Sanford. In addition to the genres listed above, the films – all under 30-minutes each – are also shown in drama, sci-fi/horror, Florida Flavor, and E for Everyone blocks, plus an opening-night variety of films, and a Best of the Fest competition on closing night. The opening session of the festival is Education Day, which features workshops for aspiring and veteran filmmakers and a showing of student films. And for the first time in 2017, film and acting workshops for 6
“Through the years, the festival has shown films that have gone on to win Oscar and Emmy awards.” elementary through high school students will be offered after the E for Everyone block on Saturday morning. Today, Chris Wise is current president of the all-volunteer organization, and in addition to both Kruckemyers and Nelson Beverly, other board members are Rachel Delinski, Debra Martin, Edith Dieckhaus, Sue Easton, Christina Hollerbach and Brian Casey. “Through the years, the festival has shown films that have gone on to win Oscar and Emmy awards,” Kruckemyer said, “so who knows what the future is for some of the films in the next event.” What: 2017 Love Your Shorts Film Festival When: Feb. 9-12 Where: Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center, 201 S. Magnolia Ave., Sanford Cost: $8 per block (except $2 for Everyone); $55 weekend pass. Free Education Day, workshops and filmmakers’ forum for film fans. Gene Kruckemyer currently is news editor in UCF’s News & Information office, and previously was publisher at the Sanford Herald and worked many years at the Orlando Sentinel. His favorite movies tend to be those that have elements of comedy, adventure, time travel – or a raging-river scene.
THEN & NOW
H I D D E N H I S TO RY R E V E A L E D “The structure is part of the City’s original downtown commercial district, which developed between 1886-1924.” THE BUILDING LOCATED AT 113 S. PALMETTO AVENUE was constructed circa 1890 by William J. Hill, the first building supply operator in Sanford. The structure is part of the City’s original downtown commercial district, which developed between 1886-1924. The building originally housed a blacksmith and wagon shop. From 1904 through 1913 the building was home to the “E.E. Brady Livery Feed and Sales Stables.” Mr. Brady was an important figure in Sanford’s history, known for his celery fields. The business offered horses, buggies, and mule teams for hire. Seminole County was created on April 25, 1913 by the Florida Legislature, and was named for the native Seminole Indians who historically lived throughout the area. The county was created out of the northern region of Orange County. In 1913 the newly created county acquired the livery building and retrofitted it for use as a jail. The Seminole County Jail functioned at this location until 1959. The original prison cell door and prison ledger book are on display at the Museum of Seminole County History. The building became home to the Seminole County Health Department when the jail was relocated to a different site. The building was last used as part of Sanford Dry Cleaners and has been vacant for decades.
BEFORE
C H R I ST I N E DA LTO N
The City of Sanford acquired the building through foreclosure in 2009. The building was part of an Environmental Protection Agency “Superfund” site, and therefore the city was unable to undertake any rehabilitation work until receiving clearance from the EPA, which has occurred this year. The building is brick with a decorative cornice. The brickwork had been covered with metal lath and stucco in the past (date unknown). Selective, investigative demolition conducted in 2009 revealed that removal of the stucco would likely not harm the original brick. Based on this information, the city of Sanford recently hired Austin Home Restorations to restore the 1913 façade, supported by a grant from the Sanford Community Redevelopment Agency. The building contains historical architectural details, including brick archways over windows and doors, wood double hung windows on the west façade, original entry door and transom on the west façade, and original jail bars in window openings on the exterior south and west walls. These architectural details are all intact and in suitable condition for restoration. Additionally, a painted advertising mural exists on the interior north wall. This mural is also in suitable condition for restoration. Due to the historical significance of the building, its suitability for restoration, and unique features, all historical elements of the original exterior walls must be retained and restored. Christine Dalton works as the Historic Preservation Officer and Community Planner for the City of Sanford. Christine is passionate about historic places. She teaches Historic Preservation at her Alma Mater, Rollins College. Her interests include all things historic, sailing, teaching, mentoring, and the arts.

HOLIDAYS
IN SANFORD TA M MY AG N I N I Sanford is well known for its many annual events spanning the entire calendar, but we really show off during the holidays. In Sanford, the season kicks off right from the beginning of December, so you have the entire month to get into the spirit. There are so many opportunities here to make memories with your family and build traditions. My hands down favorite event is the Sanford Historic Trust’s Holiday Tour of Homes, which I wrote about in a prior issue of this magazine. This isn’t necessarily a child-friendly event, but may be appropriate for older children who display an interest in history and/or architecture. One of the reasons this event is so dear to me is because it was a special tradition I shared with my own mother when I was growing up in Sanford. It’s always held the first weekend of December, and nothing gets me into the holiday spirit faster than walking through the beautifully decorated homes and feeling the welcoming warmth of the folks inside the homes. The Sanford parade is another great event that my family looks forward to each year. This illuminated parade is held at night on First Street. Be sure to get there a bit early and bring a chair, or snag a prime spot curbside so you don’t miss anything! Another great parade is the “Illuminated
Christmas Parade” on Lake Monroe. Sit on the Riverwalk and watch the parade of both sailboats and power boats – it’s unique, not something you can do in just any city! Now I’m going to let you in on a secret. My absolute favorite thing to do in Sanford during the holidays is to roam around the historic district after dark, immersing myself in the decorations and lights. As a family, we’ll bring hot cocoa in spill-proof mugs and load up in the car, cruising around while listening to holiday music. More often though, my husband and I will bundle up the kids in our massive double jogging stroller, and hit the streets. We then walk up and down our gorgeous historic streets (Magnolia, Oak and Palmetto Avenues are my personal favorite streets.) It is so much fun to see the Christmas lights, and you get so much more out of it on foot. Pure magic.
Tammy Agnini is co-chairing the Holiday Tour of Homes for the second time. In addition to working full time as a healthcare benefits consultant, Tammy also serves on the City of Sanford’s Historic Preservation Board. She enjoys spending time with her family - husband Jeb and their two little girls Sloane, 4 and Sawyer, 10 months.

FACE OF DOWNTOWN SANFORD
PAUL WILLIAMS THE OWNER OF WEST END TRADING COMPANY & CELERY CITY CRAFT
WINS BEST SANFORD PERSONALITY N I K K I N A M DA R
“I know I’m a bit of a character.” Paul Williams has become a well-known character in the community. From his sense of humor to charity work, it’s no wonder this guy always has people surrounding him. Crowds roll in the two most-frequented bars in Sanford, West End and Celery City, both of which he owns. He sat alone at the Celery City bar, mockingly singing “You Get What You Give” by the New Radicals. He spoke across the counter to his business partner, Shane Hardenbrook, about the woes of being a one-hit wonder band. He offers up root beer on tap and talks about how good it feels to win best character in Sanford. “I was confused about it at first because I didn’t know if it meant I had good character or if I was like a comic book character. I’ll bet it’s the second one,” Williams said. “I know I’m a bit of a character, so it’s not a surprise.” He thanks everyone for thinking of him during the voting.
demographics that we’re going for are totally different here than there. West End is a party bar for a younger crowd. This one we’re shooting for a little older demographic. It’s slow and quiet.” He, his fiancée and 18-month-old daughter reside in the city. Although he’s originally from Texas, he says he’s put his roots down, raising his family and the e not going anywhere. “I like Sanford because it’s rich in history. I’d never want to live somewhere that’s too new and flashy. You bring a person who has never been, say on a Saturday afternoon, you see all the people walking around, going to bars, shopping, and eating at restaurants. It’s fun. It’s a fun little town. . . It’s really cool and people are going to start finding out.” Williams and his fiancée, Katie McNamara, are expecting a boy in early December. He refers to West End as his baby, too. He is going to expand Celery City, and is even opening a new place in Dallas. It’s obvious Williams is no stranger to filling up his cup too high. But those are not the only things he is working on. He’s not ready to reveal anything more just yet. Things are still brewing down on 2nd street.
Hardenbrook agrees with his friend, saying Williams won “because he does so much for the community.” Then added, “his face and beard are gorgeous.” Williams, Hardenbrook, and their whole team are known for being very involved in the community, and working on charities, especially for animals. A dog-lover, Williams is even planning to add a pup menu when Celery City grows. “He’s in charge of fun down here,” like Pints ‘n Paws, Hardenbrook said. “We do a lot of charity work. We don’t turn anyone down. The serious amount of numbers we’ve raised for Pet Rescue by Judy and the Dolly’s Foundation, it’s remarkable. It’s a lot of work. I mean he’s already planning it and it’s so far off. It’s a big deal.” Williams is not new to bars, businesses, and benefits. Originally from Texas, born and raised, he worked and managed bars while attending the University of North Texas. He and his younger brother own eight bars back home, and are in a ‘90s acoustic grunge cover band called Pearl Jam Necklace. He moved to Sanford 14 years ago, and the city’s beloved West End just celebrated their 10-year anniversary. When asked if it was a risk to put two bars across from each other, he said “no, because they are two different concepts and Sanford didn’t really have a craft beer bar. Our 10

SANFORD FOODIE HIGHLIGHT
THE SMILING BISON L E O N KO N I E C Z N Y
One of the charms of the Smiling Bison menu is that you know there’ll be something new on the menu almost every time you visit, another culinary adventure awaits you every time. www
12
i in i on o
The Bison on the front window isn’t the only one smiling at Sanford’s Smiling Bison Restaurant—patrons eating and drinking there are smiling as well, and for good reason. Chef Josh Oakley and business partner Ron Thomas started off a few years back with a food cart, then quickly moved on to a dive place in Orlando—it quickly became popular for its quirkiness and good food. Bringing their food cart to a Sanford Art Festival a few years back, they were quickly taken by Sanford’s charm and promise. So, in the fall of 2015, they opened their Sanford location and a star was born. The best thing I put in my mouth in a long time was the Bison’s Carrot Beet Salad, but don’t rush out to get it—their menu changes frequently as the seasons for fresh ingredients change. One of the charms of the Smiling Bison menu is that you know there’ll be something new on the menu almost every time you visit, another culinary adventure awaits you every time. You’ll quickly overcome your disappointment of a favorite leaving the menu, trust me, I have. Each time I eat there, it’s a new culinary adventure waiting to happen. We do occasionally return to a few old favorites—the burger, the outine—but are always tempted to branch out and try something new.
Sanford’s Smiling Bison features a full liquor bar featuring craft cocktails made the oldfashioned way with quality ingredients and expert care. Even their drink menu changes with the seasons, though you can get your favorite old standbys as well. They also rotate craft beers on tap with a selection sure to please most every palate. But the main reason I keep returning to The Smiling Bison is the food. The first bite I ever had there was the Poutine—thick cut French fries with mushroom gravy and fresh cheese curds. Served with homemade ketchup and/ or homemade mushroom ketchup, Poutine has been an anchor of the menu since they opened, one of the few items that is not rotated off. The Carrot Beet Salad deserves special mention since it is still the best thing I put in my mouth anywhere in the past year, maybe longer—maybe even ever! Perhaps it was the surprise of the fresh flavors. Perhaps it was the appeal of the colors--red and golden beets, yellow and orange carrots, green and red lettuce, all placed on the plate with exquisite care—the dish itself a beauty to behold. Then there was the taste. Besides fresh crispy vegetables, the goat cheese lent a creaminess,
the walnuts some crunch, and the house-smoked bacon gave the dish a hint of smoky-savory goodness. Perhaps it was the balance of the dish—mandolins of sweet-tangy citrus gave the perfect acid to balance the dish. I would say that every dish I’ve had has been carefully crafted, both in flavor and presentation, and the Carrot Beet Salad is a prime example of a perfect dish in presentation, flavor, and freshness. Though reservations are recommended if you want to guaranteed a table, I’ve never made a reservation—we prefer to sit at the narrow, long, high-tops in the bar area where we often squeeze in among strangers and leave as friends. We’ve made many new friends there late in the evening when we stopped by for a bite or a cocktail. The small-town friendliness of Sanford is evident in the ambience here and we often run into friends, new and old. Hometown atmosphere rules here. Over the top service is also a hallmark of The Smiling Bison. The wait staff know the menu and can describe each item in detail—no small feat with a menu that is constantly evolving. The service is superior with each staff person helping the other. Need a refill? No problem. Done with that plate? Off it goes. Need another drink? On the way. Service is never lacking, always friendly, always fast. Last to mention is the quality, though that’s been the theme at The Smiling Bison from the first bite of Poutine to the last thing I ate there (we shared the burger)—quality is always there. It’s part of the reason for the changing menu as fresh ingredients go in and out of season. There is no reheat, no pouring a sauce out of a pan, no off the shelf ingredients in use here. The make and smoke their own sausage for the sausage pizza. They make the pepperoni for the pepperoni pizza. Smoked bacon bits on a salad? They are also house made and smoked. Attention to detail is paramount. If you’re lucky, you can grab one of the 4 or 5 seats at the chef’s table and watch as the finishing touche are put on dishes—and interact with the chef. Executive Chef Josh himself is often there, and I know he’ll spill his secrets, he is proud of his food, and rightly so. Sanford has a burgeoning local dining scene that features many local restaurants (and bars) with good quality, popular prices, friendly service, and outstanding ambience. The Smiling Bison, in the short year it’s been open, has rocketed to the top as one of the best restaurants in Sanford and was voted the My Sanford Magazine 2016 Best New Restaurant award. They continue to deliver QSV—Quality, Service, Value—each day. The November 2016 news that they are closing their Orlando location and expanding their Sanford hours is exciting news to all central Florida. Sanford has a real food gem here, check it out!

KRUCKEMYER CREATORS OF LOVE YOUR SHORT FILM FESTIVAL IN SANFORD P E R L A B. C RO S BY
“While traveling from Las Vegas to the Hoover Dam, we stumbled upon a short-film festival in Boulder City, Nevada, in a historic theater much like Sanford’s Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center. While we were sitting through the comedy block and enjoying the evening, Nancy said, “We could do this in Sanford.” After coming home, we decided to follow through with that idea and use it to promote the city and the arts.” “Viajabamos desde Las Vegas hacia la presa de Hoover, y nos encontramos con un festival de corto-metraje en la ciudad de Boulder, Nevada, que se presentaba en un teatro histórico similar al Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center de Sanford. Mientras estábamos sentados y disfrutando la noche en el bloque de comedia, Nancy me dijo, “Esto lo podríamos hacer en Sanford.” Cuando llegamos a casa, decidimos acoger la idea con la intención de promover la ciudad y las artes.”
YOU RELOCATED TO SANFORD APPROXIMATELY 12 YEARS AGO, WHAT WAS THE ATTRACTION THAT DREW YOU TO THIS CITY? This is a pleasant city defined by its front porches, engaging activities, and a beautiful view of the St. Johns River. 18
WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT LIVING IN SANFORD? The city has a lot of great attributes – parks, arts community, airport, zoo, restaurants and eclectic businesses – but the community spirit is what makes the city a great place to live in. People work together to solve problems and create new things to make Sanford and Seminole County a better place to live. PLEASE SHARE WITH OUR READERS WHAT “LOVE YOUR SHORTS FILM FESTIVAL” MEANS TO THE BOARD? The festival was started by the all-volunteer board with several goals in mind, foremost of which was to create something that would enhance the community. With the help of friends, volunteers, sponsors and the filmmakers themselves, the festival has introduced Sanford to people from all over the world who have attended. We’ve had filmmakers and fans visit from Canada, Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, over Florida, as well throughout the United States.
Q. WOULD YOU PROVIDE SOME INSIGHT INTO WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE THIS GREAT FESTIVAL? While traveling from Las Vegas to the Hoover Dam, we stumbled upon a short-film festival in Boulder City, Nevada, in a historic theater much like Sanford’s Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center. The festival had blocks of different genres of films, follow-up Q&As with filmmakers, and a meet-up at a corner brewery afterwards. While we were sitting through the comedy block and enjoying the evening, Nancy said, “We could do this in Sanford.” After coming home, we decided to follow through with that idea and use it to promote the city and the arts.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT SANFORD, WHAT WOULD IT BE? The frequent incorrect outside perception of the city. A lot of positive changes have occurred in Sanford through the years – the creation of the commercial and residential historic districts, the always-active RiverWalk, a wide interest in the arts, an emerging nightlife of restaurants and bars – but many people from outside the community continue to foster incorrect notions about what a great city we have.
FINALLY, WHAT ARE YOUR LONG-TERM PLANS FOR THE FESTIVAL? We’d like the event to become a destination film festival for aspiring and veteran filmmakers. From the very beginning we also wanted to provide an educational component, which we have added and hope to expand. We offer workshops, show some student films, and provide grants to filmmakers. We hope the festival grows at its own appropriate pace, but maintains the feeling of a “boutique” festival, which one visiting New York filmmaker called us. P. PARA CONCLUIR, ¿QUÉ METAS TIENEN PARA EL FESTIVAL A LARGO PLAZO? .

CLAUDIA MUNDLOS LOVE at

J E N N I F E R LU C E h t
I fell in love with Sanford. The city immediately reminded me of my life in Germany... 1. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND. I was born in Belgium but grew up in Germany (Ingolstadt). I earned a BA in American Cultural Studies with minor in Media Studies and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Regensburg. During my studies I attended Murray State University in Kentucky as part of an exchange program of my university. That is where I met my future husband, Jose Rodriguez who had just earned his MBA at the same university. We fell in love and in order to be with Jose, I finally moved to the USA in the summer of 2004. After a short time in Orlando we decided to buy our first home in Sanford. 2. WHY WAS SANFORD THE PLACE YOU CHOSE TO STAY? I fell in love with Sanford. The city immediately reminded me of my life in Germany: its urban vibe and walkability, historic homes (even though not nearly as old as the 500+ year old buildings in my hometown) and more than anything this very special community! I always feel welcome and home here! Of course I was also thrilled to have a German restaurant so close to my home. In 2005 Jose and I became licensed real estate agents. After a few months of working in the business we knew this was our calling and we have since helped hundreds of families move into and out of this beautiful area of Central Florida. The fact that I am so in love with the city makes it so much easier to “sell it” and now Downtown Sanford is the headquarters of our operations. While working full time in the business I also earned a degree in Graphic and Web Design at Valencia College in 2010. Because I have extensive knowledge and experience in internet marketing, web design and social media I am in charge of our daily marketing activities. 20

3. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS? I actively write real estate articles on our real estate blogs but also for the Orlando Sentinel’s “HypeOrlando.” I recently became part of the #obassador program by the Orlando Economic Development Committee to promote Orlando to relocating families and businesses. In 2008 I started my blog Sanford365 which over the years has attracted a large following of thousands of locals. We share events and things to do in Sanford but also introduce new businesses and promote them actively on our social media channels including Facebook. Moreover, we keep over 3,500 newsletter subscribers informed about the happenings in town. This is my way of giving back and helping the city and all of its small businesses thrive. 4. WHAT DOES CLAUDIA LIKE TO DO FOR FUN? In 2011 Jose and I became parents to Nicolas and then in 2013 to our second son Lukas. Even though we live a busy life we still like to have fun whenever we can and are very social. We love traveling with our kids to either Germany or Colombia to spend time with our families and friends. Those are the times when it comes in very handy that we raised our children multilingual. I am also an active member of the German American Society of Central Florida and I have fun organizing kids events such as Kidstoberfest and Kinderfasching (German Mardi Gras for the kids). I love keeping up all my German traditions so if you don’t see me walking the streets of Sanford in my dirndl you might catch me enjoying a beer at Hollerbachs or shopping German groceries at Magnolia Square Market. Apart from that, I try to attend and visually capture as many events in Sanford as I can. Jennifer Luce earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Central Florida with a 4.0 GPA and her Master’s Degree in Business Administration. Jennifer began editing papers for school projects and was nominated by her professors in her undergraduate program to receive an award for her exceptional writing skills. In her current role as Senior Director of Human Resources, she uses her outstanding writing skills to be an effective communicator to her employees. Still, Jennifer insists her greatest achievement is her son Austin. Jennifer plays an active part in Austin’s extracurricular activities.

OUR BELOVED YORKIE “BUDDY”, who was with us for almost 14 years, died on August 2012. We vowed not to have another, however, in January 2015 we welcomed Mr. Mickey Crosby into our home and our lives. He has proven to be intelligent with a large vocabulary and is very loyal. Mickey loves his family but is particularly attached to Benny. He constantly wants to be near him and craves affection. Mickey responds promptly to commands and loves to play “chase” which he demands daily. I would have to say that unconditional love is truly one of the most important lessons that we all could learn from our animal family members. After enduring the loss of our Buddy, Mickey has put smiles on our faces and love in our hearts again. Welcome to Sanford Mickey and more importantly thank you for choosing us as your parents.

FULL MOON HARVEST M AGNOLIA SQUARE, SANFORD, FLORIDA N I K K I N A M DA R Members of the city sat at a long community table in Magnolia Square for the Full Moon Harvest. Each table was embellished with fall items, from mini pumpkins to colorful foods, decorated by local residents in hopes of winning the contest for best décor. Contestants from all around the city were there, including familiar faces like Historic Preservation Officer Christine Dalton, Christina Hollerbach-Simmons of Hollerbach Art Haus and Jeanine Taylor of Jeanine Taylor Folk Art. They sat under Italian lights, clinking wine glasses together, as the sun lowered and the city darkened to twinkles casting over the brick ground. The idea developed by five Sanford ladies, Maria Shreve, Ana Yebba, Margie Chusmir, Cheryl Deming and Autumn Carfagna who met early this year to exchange ideas about how they could coordinate a beautiful harvest to celebrate food and fall. “We wanted to create one long table to give the feeling of a community dinner,” Yebba said. “We wanted each section of eight-foot tables to create their own version of fall tablescapes. We figured that with the fall theme and the end of the day, it would look like one continuous tablescape and it did.” Yebba is thrilled with the success of the event and is planning to do another one next fall. But before that, they hope to do a spring harvest as well. 1 Cheryl Deming 3 Matty Frias, Perla Crosby, Abel Gomez & Marnie Forestieri-Gomez 4 Ana Yebba 5 Eyvonne Williams, Eric Robinson, Mario Hicks, Sheena Rena 6 Steve & Margie Chusmir, Matthew West & Carolyn Longest 7 Tracey Sherman, Lisa Brady, Mark Lamm, Edward De Los Santos, Melissa Medders, Christine Dalton, Naomi Gonzalez 22

WAYS to keep your
NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS D R . M I G U E L A . G O N Z A L E Z , L M F T, M H S, M S *
AS SUMMER MELTS INTO FALL and the smell and feel of winter makes its grand entrance, a new year approaches quickly and inexorably, and I know I must finish writing this article about New Year’s resolutions so that it can go to print. I have known I needed to write it, but, due to so many reasons I don’t even remember, it has almost gone the route of so many broken resolutions that will be made by many of us again this year. What happens with those commitments we make to ourselves, usually in the presence of important people in our lives, but are never met? Fascinating enough, when we make a resolution, it is usually about some important aspect of our lives—health, finances, relationships, etc. Yet, they seem to lose their significance almost as quickly as they became significant. Why is it so difficult for many of us to keep up with and ultimately achieve our New Year’s resolutions? Is it a lack of a true commitment? Is it an absence of discipline or focus? Are we just too busy? Do we have too many competing priorities? Are we lacking the social support we need? Are we setting ourselves up for failure? It could be all, some, or none of the above. It is a conundrum…maybe not. But, don’t despair! A new year (new opportunity) approaches and we can try it again! We are going to finally achieve our new year’s resolutions, or most of them, and all it may take is reading through this article. Below are some tips that might make a difference in whether you succeed at achieving your new year’s goals/resolutions.
1.
2.
3.
24
BE REALISTIC Set small, reasonable, and achievable resolutions/goals. Don’t set yourself up for failure. Whether or not you attain your goal or resolution might have more to do than you think with whether you persist on it or just give up. If you have never been a runner, don’t make a resolution/set a goal that demands for you to run 26.2 miles by the 3rd of January. This is unrealistic and the odds are against you; chances are you will not achieve this unrealistic, unachievable goal. It is a self-defeating resolution/goal.
BE VERY SPECIFIC ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT to achieve. Following the example cited above, perhaps the goal should be to walk 1 mile 2 or 3 times a week for a month, increasing the distance by 1 mile with each subsequent month, for 4 months, and start to jog from 1 to 2 miles, 2 or 3 times a week, in your 5th month. Going from small to big is better than big to nothing.
ACHIEVING YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS like any other goals, might take more than one try. Not giving up is essential; when you do, you are eliminating any opportunities for success. And as you have probably experienced, frequently, success depends on persistence.
AN EYE ON YOUR WINNINGS, NOT ON 4. KEEP your losses. Frequently, we are rigid in our approach to measuring our success, and we tend to focus on and self-flog over small limitations or faults. If you achieve 90% of what you set out to accomplish, the focus should not be on the 10% you did not achieve. Hey, you are 90% ahead of where you were before you started, and that’s wonderful. If you get to the finish line second, then you are the e n nne n t the e n e
5.
EVEN THE LONE RANGER WAS NOT ALONE
6.
RESOLUTIONS DO NOT HAVE TO NECESSARILY
Try to have friends and family join you in your journey. There is a lot to say about the power of the group and how it can help keep you motivated and help hold you accountable.
be all about you, your health, or your relationships. You can decide to get involved in social causes (programs that help children, food pantries, programs for the elderly, etc.); there is great value in volunteering and a great need for such contributions. Finally, success breeds success, and it is a great motivator. Small, achievable resolutions/goals are easier to achieve; yet, they still contribute to a sense of accomplishment and success. Be realistic about what your resolutions/goals are, and the actions you need to take to achieve them. Often, achieving a goal requires some sacrifice and you must be aware of it before you begin. Avoid setting yourself up for a disappointment and a feeling of failure; and if you feel you have failed, challenge yourself to try and try again. You did not fail, the effort was likely not enough to get you to the finish line, or close to it. In the meantime, have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2017—Happy Holidays!
