the former Jaycee Park into Paw Park of Historic Sanford. As the first off-leash dog park in Central Florida, it became a model for other communities. For almost 15 years, it has been one of the city’s busiest parks—and now signs of its age and use are showing. The project will be made possible by a $25K Technical Assistance grant from the Department of Economic Opportunity and a $70K grant from the 17-92 Community Redevelopment Agency. The park redesign by Littlejohn will include new landscaping, hardscape, and irrigation. Most trees from the vast existing tree canopy will remain except for a few, due to their health and age.
PARKING.
*All of the improvements shown here will not be constructed at the same time. Phase 1 improvements will consist of improvements within Paw Park itself. The streetscape improvements outside of the park may be constructed at a later date as funding becomes available. Parking will be provided off site, and the design calls for future on-street parking to be created, as grants and/or other funding sources are identified.

Despite her loving characteristics, Bahiti’s owners agree that she can be a royal pain—always making a mess with her food and water bowl. Grilling has become one of America's favorite ways to cook. How exciting would summer really be without something on the grill?
We invited Vayda’s Gipsy Rib Ranch to prepare a summer grill meal at the Demming’s home. Owner Vicci Cranias and her daughter catered the event to three other local families who were also invited to the gathering—the Carfagna’s, the Agnini’s, and the Harkin’s. In the spirit of Independence Day, Cheryl Demming and Autumn Lord-Carfagna set up simple yet creative patriotic table décor. Out of four stacked palettes, they made the kids’ table and covered it with fun things to keep them entertained during the grill event. Since July is National Ice Cream month, we invited Sal's Italian Ice from Sanford to join us and bring some refreshing desserts. Vayda’s Gypsy Rib Ranch is proud to be a real wood BBQ restaurant and to be

located in Seminole County. Leroy was the pitmaster for 27 years at the original Rib Ranch—and if you have not yet tasted his grilling, you better do so soon! Vicci has said she has owned restaurants in the past, but Vayda’s Gypsy Rib Ranch makes her proud because it was graced with her grandmother’s name, Vayda, and her famous recipes.

SANFORD’S
MAYOR
E S T A B L I S H E S
YOUTH COUNCIL ECONOMIC DE VELOPMENT DIREC TOR
LISA HOLDER
Mayor Jeff Triplett recently formed a Mayor’s Youth Council composed of 12 students in 11th and 12th grade who attend high school in Sanford.
ALL STUDENTS FROM BOTH OF SANFORD’S high schools were applicable. Chosen by both schools, Crooms Academy of Information Technology and Seminole High School, these 12 students now make up the inaugural Mayor’s Youth Council. Youth Councils are an excellent means of vesting youth with the knowledge, skills, and abilities in civic matters—they promote regular and active civic engagement. Mayor Triplett is looking forward to this new endeavor for this City of Sanford. He said, “Engaging and investing in the next generation by educating them in the importance of civic involvement is integral to the future of our community.
WE WELCOME YOU
to MAKE SANFORD
YOURS TOO.
15
These students are willing and eager participants. I think the Youth Council students provide a great foundation of our future leaders.” Engaging the youth of Sanford to make recommendations to the City Commission on matters that affect this demographic—and ultimately every citizen—is the goal of the Mayor’s Youth Council. They will pick a project to work on that aligns with the City of Sanford’s Mission and Vision, which involves them in the policy-making process. Several initiatives to pursue have already been discussed by the Youth Council. The City of Sanford is now participating in President Obama’s “My Brother’s Keeper”
“THE YOUTH COUNCIL STUDENTS PROVIDE A GREAT FOUNDATION OF OUR FUTURE LEADERS” —MAYOR JEFF TRIPLETT
Community Challenge. Other initiatives will focus on generating jobs for teens, sustainability, community service, and youth empowerment. The Mayor’s Youth Council will meet during this summer and throughout the upcoming 2015-2016 school year. Students can continuously apply, so that as current students graduate there is a seamless process of keeping 12 students on the Youth Council.
“What an amazing opportunity Mayor Jeff Triplett is providing for our students. This will offer these students an up close and personal view of government at work! We’re excited for this Youth Council, and so appreciative of the opportunity given to Sanford’s students.” —DR. CONNIE COLLINS, PRINCIPAL OF SEMINOLE HIGH SCHOOL.
"Participating in the Youth Council allows students to become invested in their local government while giving them the opportunity to experience first-hand the impact they can have on the community they live in. This experience will help promote positive youth involvement and set the standard for future community service." —DR. DEMETRIA HAYES, PRINCIPAL AT CROOMS ACADEMY OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY.

P: RECUERDAS EL PRIMER LUGAR HISTÓRICO QUE VISITASTE CUANDO NIÑA? Q: WHAT WAS THE FIRST HISTORIC SITE YOU VISITED AS A CHILD?
A: I grew up in NYC and was surrounded by historic architecture. In the fourth grade I was selected to participate in an accelerated academic program which focused greatly on arts and culture. During that school year I had the amazing opportunity to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Lincoln Center, and the New York Philharmonic. I also visited the Liberty Bell, Franklin Mint, and Amish Country in Philadelphia. These experiences left an indelible impression and are still some of my favorite memories. The Metropolitan Museum of Art will forever have a cherished place in my heart. Q: WHAT INFLUENCED YOU TO PURSUE YOUR CAREER IN HISTORIC PRESERVATION?
A: My paternal and maternal grandmothers lived in neighborhoods that were starkly different, though the architecture was very similar. One grandmother was "poor" while the other lived "comfortably." I spent a lot of time wondering what made their neighborhoods so different since the architecture was so similar. When I was 9 years old, while riding the train with my family to visit Coney Island, I looked out the window and studied the neighborhoods we passed.
I told my father that when I grew up, I would "paint the buildings and make the neighborhoods nice.” This career path is not something I had to think about or discover. I have known since childhood that historic buildings and neighborhoods would be a part of my life forever. Q: LAST MONTH YOU RECEIVED TWO AWARDS FROM THE FLORIDATRUSTFORHISTORICPRESERVATION,HOWIMPORTANT WAS THAT FOR YOU AND FOR OUR COMMUNITY? IS THIS THE FIRST RECOGNITION?
A: Recognition by the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation is a true honor. It's the highest achievement statewide that historic communities can aspire to. This recognition is important for Sanford, as it elevates the City's position as a premier historic community, which in turn attracts visitors and bolsters the local economy. I received awards in 2013, 2014, and 2015 for various Preservation Education/Media projects, and in 2015 an award for the Sanford Avenue Streetscape Project, in the category of Infill Development. Q: AS A HISTORIC PRESERVATION TEACHER, HOW DO YOU INVOLVE YOUNG PEOPLE TO REHABILITATE HISTORIC PLACES IN NEED?
A: I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to teach historic preservation at Rollins College and work with University of Central Florida interns on preservation projects. Many of these students grew up in Florida and have had little exposure to historic buildings or neighborhoods. It is a treat to see them visit historic sites for the first time and to hear their exclamations of "how amazing!" the buildings are. Q: WHAT DREW YOU TO SANFORD, FLORIDA?
A: I fell in love with Sanford 20 years ago. It was one of the first historic communities I discovered when I moved to Florida. Back then, Sanford was a little rough around the edges, but had a distinct charm and unique character. I loved the historic downtown and the beautiful homes that had so much potential.I still have photographs I took back then, of buildings around town, many of which have since been rehabbed. Q: WHERE DO YOU SEE SANFORD IN 2020?
A: There are many positive changes happening in Sanford. I can envision more improvements to the downtown area, including the extension of the RiverWalk to Interstate 4, the addition of a public art program to enhance our already thriving arts scene, many more restored homes, and new residents contributing to the population on this city. I think that the influx of millennials to Sanford is going to add a vibrancy to the community that will really be great. I see many more couples with young children discovering our family friendly town.

BETTER YOU DR . MIGUEL A . GONZ ÁLE Z , L MF T
IT IS A COMMON BELIEF that our gut acts like a “second brain.”
Studies suggest more serotonin, the “feel-good” neurotransmitter, is produced in the gut rather than in the brain. Eating anti-inflammatory nutrients on a regular basis can help lower your stress levels, feel calmer, and maintain energy from the inside out.
1. AVOCADOS
They are a great source of B vitamins, which is needed to maintain healthy neuron activity and brain cells. They also provide healthy plant fats, among numerous other benefits.
2. NUTS
Transform yourself by adding just the right ingredients into your everyday routine and experience a whole new you.
4. COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATES
Production of serotonin is prompted by complex carbohydrates. Healthy options include whole-grain breakfast cereals, breads, oatmeal, or steel-cut oats. They stabilize blood sugar levels which can help you feel more balanced.
Replenish your necessary B vitamins with walnuts. Brazil nuts increase zinc levels, which can be drained by high levels of anxiety. Almonds boost vitamin E, which helps fight cellular damage linked to chronic stress. Pistachios can soften the impact of stress hormones on the body. Nuts are high in fat—so moderation is key!
5. WATERMELON
3. DARK & LEAFY GREENS
6. FISH
Spinach and kale are rich in potassium, magnesium, and calcium. Potassium and magnesium are minerals which help overstressed muscles. Calcium can help your body maintain its circadian rhythm.
For those who are not tomato lovers, your lycopene intake can be replaced with some refreshing watermelon—which actually has higher levels of the antioxidant. Lycopene not only protects your brain, but helps fight depression-causing inflammation.
Salmon and trout are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and can protect your heart from surges in stress hormones. Aim to eat four ounces of fatty fish at least three times a week. Fish such as cod, salmon, halibut, tuna, and snapper are rich in tryptophan— an amino acid that naturally raises serotonin levels.

7. HUMMUS
Garbanzo beans, or chickpeas, are the main ingredient in hummus. They contain tryptophan, folate, and vitamin B6.
8. MILK
As the perfect bedtime stress buster, milk contains the amino acid tryptophan. It is a precursor to our sleep hormone, melatonin, which helps you rest when you sleep.
9. CINNAMON
Research studies have shown cinnamon can help stabilize your blood sugar and reduce body inflammation.
10. EGGS
They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, choline, and B vitamins. Eggs contain protein, which help you feel fuller longer and more energized. If high cholesterol poses a problem for you, try egg whites or egg substitutes.
11. DARK CHOCOLATE
With at least 70 percent cocoa, it can give you an instant boost in mood and concentration. Dark chocolate relaxes blood vessels and improves blood circulation.
12. GREEN TEA
Amino acids can be found in green tea. They help regulate stress, improve mood, and relax muscles.
