South Suburban College is seeking nominations for The Star Awards, which will be presented at the 10th Annual Chicago Women’s Conference being held at South Suburban College on Friday, March 16. The two awards recognize women for their outstanding leadership in business, community activities and/or education and their encouragement of others to also be STARS. One of the awards recognizes lifetime achievement of a South Suburban College alumna. STAR awardees are role models because they not only focus on achieving their own goals, but through inspiring actions profoundly motivate others to do the same. Applications are being accepted through February 13 and are available on the website: www. thechicagowomensconference.org
This year marks the third year of the Star Awards. This year’s conference theme is “You Can Be Your Own Superhero.” Last year’s Star Award winners were SSC Lifetime Alumna winner Janice Crowe, a graduate of the college’s nursing program and Star Award winner Bridgett Annicks, an outstanding elementary school educator. “We are excited to see this year’s nominations. It is so rewarding to read about the many remarkable women who excel in their endeavors and care about others,” reports Nancy Burrows, Co-chair of The Star Awards committee. Women can nominate themselves and others by going to www. thechicagowomensconference.org. Visit the website for more information, and register now to attend the event on March 16.
Northwest Indiana Symphony Valentines Join the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra and Music Director/Conductor Kirk Muspratt as they offer two separate inventive and inviting evenings perfect for a Valentine’s or mid-winter night out: Valentine’s Piano concert, February 9, and A Concert with Courses Symphony Gala, February 17. Start your Valentine’s celebration with a romantic concert on Friday, February 9 at 7:30 pm at the Auditorium at Bethel Church in Crown Point featuring Rachmaninoff’s 2nd Symphony. This triumphant work gave Rachmaninoff the confidence to devote his life to musical composition and has been used in numerous movies and popular songs. Popular pianist Wael Farouk returns to perform Beethoven’s worldchanging Emperor Concerto, his last and greatest piano concerto. There will be a pre-concert lecture for ticket holders
starting at 6:15. Tickets range from $25 - $65. On Saturday, February 17 at 6pm at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster the Symphony presents their new Gala, a Concert with Courses, featuring Flights of Fine Music and Cuisine. Guests will join members of the Symphony as they entertain with classical, pops, percussion, and jazz musical selections intermingled with delicious cuisine. The night will also include a cocktail hour and Silent Auction. Proceeds benefits the Symphony’s music and education programs, including the Education Concert, Youth Orchestra, Young People’s Competition and the Symphony Chorus. First Place Program Innovation Award for Schererville’s Annual “Anyone Can Do A 5k” went to Betty Durochik, Program Supervisor at Schererville’s Franciscan Health Fitness Centers. _______________________________
Accepting the Honorable Mention Award for Facility of the Year is Jill Schneider, Fitness Center Manager at Franciscan Health Fitness Centers Chesterton. _______________________________
Marci Crozier, Franciscan Health Centers Director of Health Promotions receiving her award for Individual Professional of the Year Award at the Annual MFA Award Ceremony. _______________________________
Franciscan Health Fitness Centers is proud to announce that they have recently won three national awards from the Medical Fitness Association. The Schererville and Chesterton locations are two of a select-elite group of fitness centers in the world, and the only facilities in Northwest Indiana to become certified as medical fitness facilities by the Medical Fitness Association (MFA). The commitment to certification means that they have raised the bar in establishing higher standards of service, safety and results-oriented programs for their membership and communities. Marci Crozier, Director of Health Promotions, was honored by the MFA as Individual Professional of the Year for being an exceptional executive who has significantly advanced the welfare of her facility, company and community. She has contributed significantly and consistently to the advancement and recognition of the profession through service to the MFA and other related organizations. Marci has always been
willing to share her valuable experience with other health and fitness executives in addition to playing an active role in many civic and community affairs. Jill Schneider, Fitness Center Manager at Franciscan Health Fitness Centers in Chesterton, was presented with the award for the Facility of the Year, Honorable Mention. This distinguished Facility Award was given to the Chesterton location for serving as a benchmark for the industry and whose results other facilities can emulate. To receive this award, the facility needs to maintain its MFA Certification, be recognized as an exceptional facility, contribute significantly and consistently to the advancement and/or recognition of the medical fitness industry, be willing to share their expertise with and serve as a role model for other facilities. Betty Durochik, Schererville Program Supervisor, accepted the First Place Program Innovation Award for Anyone Can Do A 5k, held annually at Franciscan Health Fitness Centers Schererville,
IN. In an effort to make a change in the alarming growth in obesity statistics, the Schererville Location re-invented their 5K six years ago. After hosting The Pumpkin Prance for 30 years, the event was redesigned and moved up on the calendar from October to September to encourage more of the community to participate, whether it was their first or 50th 5k. Turn of Phrase: Apple of My Eye
Meaning more precious than anything else. Seen in the King James Bible printed in 1611, it was actually a common English saying that was used instead of the literal Hebrew text “little man of the eye.” It refers to the tiny reflection of yourself that you see in another person’s eye, and suggests the idea of being the darling of someone’s gaze.

Financial Advice Column
Put a Trusted ‘Quarterback’ on Your Financial Team BOB KRYGSHELD On February 4, the eyes of most of the country will be on Minneapolis, site of the 2018 Superbowl. As a fan, you can admire the way quarterbacks in the Big Game direct their teams. But as an investor, you can learn something from the big game by putting together your own team to help you achieve your financial goals—and you may find it helpful to have your own “quarterback.” Who should be on your team? Your financial strategy will involve investments, taxes and estate planning, so you will likely need a financial advisor, a tax professional and an attorney. Ideally, your financial advisor —the individual with the broadest view of your financial situation —should serve as the quarterback of this team. And, just as a quarterback on a football team must communicate clearly with his teammmates, so will your financial quarterback need to maintain consistent contact with the other team members. Let’s look at a couple of basic examples as to how this communication might work. First, suppose you are self-employed and contribute to a Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) IRA. Because your contributions are made with pre-tax dollars, the more you put in, the lower your taxable income. (In 2018, the maximum contribution is $55,000.) Your financial advisor can recommend investments you can choose from. Yet you will want your financial advisor to share all your SEP IRA information with your tax professional. When it’s near tax-filing time, your tax professional can then let you and your financial advisor know how much room you still have to contribute to your SEP IRA for the year, and how much you need to add to
potentially push yourself into a lower tax bracket. Now, let’s consider the connection between your financial advisor and your attorney— specifically, your attorney handling your estate planning arrangements. It’s essential that you and your financial advisor provide your attorney with a list of all your financial assets—IRAs, 401(k)s, investments held in brokerage accounts, insurance policies and so on. Your attorney will need this information when preparing your important legal documents, such as your will and living trust— after all, a key part of your estate plan is who gets what. But it’s imperative that you and your financial advisor convey some oftenoverlooked details that can make a big difference in the disposition of your estate. For example, your financial advisor might suggest that you review the beneficiary designations on your IRA, 401(k) and life insurance policies to make sure these designations are still accurate in light of changes in your life—new spouse, new children and others. These designations are meaningful and can even supersede the instructions you might leave in your will or living trust. It can be challenging to meet all your financial objectives. But with the right team in place, and a quarterback to help lead it, you can keep moving toward those goals—and you might cut down on the “fumbles” along the way. Edward Jones, its employees and financial advisors are not estate planners and cannot provide tax or legal advice. You should consult your estate-planning attorney or qualified tax advisor regarding your situation. “This will be an amazing overnight experience for the girls in Lake County,” said Lisa Daugherty, President & CEO of Lake Area United Way. “It’s a great chance for the girls to get to meet new people and try some new experiences. We’ll have plenty of fun activities, but also educational and affirmational breakout sessions so the girls will leave with some tips and tricks on how to succeed when faced with various challenges.” “Real. Strong. Girls. seeks to empower girls in our community to grow into strong, successful women, and Mielle Organics shares that goal. I am passionate about inspiring women and girls to become successful in business, and entrepreneurship and this program is a great opportunity to give girls the confidence and skills they’ll need to succeed in whatever they choose to do later in life. Manatees are large, plant-eating aquatic mammals who are native to to the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. They are slow moving and often have rough encounters with boats, leaving tell-tale scars. ______________________________________
Save the Manatee Club was founded in 1981 by former Florida Governor and U.S. Senator, Bob Graham and singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett. The Club’s mission is to protect manatees and their habitat. For the past 36 years, Save the Manatee Club, an international 501(c)(3) nonprofit, has educated millions around the world about imperiled manatees and the threats to their long-term survival. (The last two years have set records for watercraft mortality.) Through their adoption program, people can learn about manatees and how they can participate in conservation. You can Adopt-A-Manatee® this Valentine’s Day from Save the Manatee Club for family and friends. The manatees in the Club’s popular adoption programs are real, living manatees with known histories. It costs $25 to “adopt,” or sponsor, one manatee. Save the Manatee Club sends a personalized adoption packet to the recipient, which includes an adoption certificate, photo and life history of a specific Florida manatee, along with a fact-filled membership handbook. Four print newsletters and six e-newsletters are also sent to the gift recipient throughout the year. “Adopt” at the $35 level or above, and a heart ornament is also included with the packet. The manatees in the program can be viewed on the Club’s website at savethemanatee.org/adopt. Alane Foster from Palm Beach, Florida adopted “Ilya” last year as a Valentine’s gift for her son, Lyon. “My youngest son, Gray, is a big manatee fan, and he suggested we adopt a
manatee for his older brother, Lyon,” she said. “The manatee we adopted, Ilya, was perfect because he was stuck up north in cold, dark waters and had to be rescued and sent back home to Florida. Lyon is a Florida boy who attends a school in Connecticut, and he can certainly identify with Ilya around February every year!” Alane said Lyon loved the gift. “Manatees are so charismatic that any person with a heart would want to protect them,” says Alane. “It takes a dedicated and organized effort to ensure their future because manatees and their habitat are so threatened. We feel good about supporting Save the Manatee Club, as their grassroots efforts take on more than just education. They also address the manatees’ needs on the legislative end.” For more information about manatees and “adopting” a manatee as a Valentine’s Day gift, contact Save the Manatee Club at 500 N. Maitland Ave., Maitland, FL 32751, call 1-800-432-JOIN (5646), or visit their web site at savethemanatee.org. Read about the Club’s activities and accomplishments at savethemanatee.org/smcinfo. Follow the Club using Twitter twitter.com/ savethemanatee, Facebook facebook.com/ savethemanateeclub, Pinterest pinterest. com/SaveTheManateeC/, and Instagram instagram.com/adoptamanatee/. Check out manatee videos on YouTube at youtube.com/ adoptamanatee. Adopting a manatee is certainly a unique gift option, especially for a child or conservationminded loved one.

Speaking Of Seniors
Bad Management at Medicare WOODROW WILCOX On November 27, 2017, I worked with two clients to contact Medicare. But, one of the clients decided to wait until another day. It was Monday and that is the worst day to phone Medicare. Over the weekend, many seniors write a note to themselves to call or visit their insurance agent or call Medicare about a medical bill problem. The first client with whom I phoned Medicare decided to quit the call after we had waited over 30 minutes. The wait was too long. He decided to visit me another day. The second client waited with me over 40 minutes to talk to a Medicare representative. Since there is a consistent pattern of heavy calls on Monday, why doesn’t the management of Medicare schedule enough people on Mondays to answer phones in order to handle the spike in phone calls? The answer is that government doesn’t think like that. The second client was a 96 year old woman who brought a payment demand letter from a collection firm. The bill originated with a local hospital. I waited with her because she was confused and forgetful. I needed to talk
to Medicare to get some exact information about the bill in question in order to help her. I did get the information that I needed about her bill. Then, I wrote a letter to the hospital and collection firm to correct the billing problem. That should result in the bill and the collection firm going away. All the help that I gave these clients was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency has earned a reputation for helping our clients and “going the extra mile” with them to resolve medical bill problems. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of service to senior citizen clients, why not switch to an insurance agency that does?

Home buyers are tired of viewing bank-owned properties that need work and have no disclosures. They are frustrated with short sale homes that they will have to wait months for a clear accepted contract and possession. Most buyers prefer to buy from a traditional seller…and buyers worry that interest rates could edge up in the spring. The plain truth is a well prepared home seller most likely will not have to wait a long time. In the past few weeks, homes that I have listed received offers within days of hitting the market. Pricing and preparation were key to getting quick offers. These are not flukes either. I have seen many well priced listings fly off the MLS in January and February. In past years, I have seen inventory levels double from February to May. So…stop thinking like the average seller, get your home on the market now and let it shine! If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/ MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@ remax.net, Website: w w w. B u d e r H o m e s . com. “Should I wait until the spring market and warmer weather before I list my home for sale?” As a Realtor in the south suburbs of Chicago, I get asked this question all the time. My response is quite simple…“If you can list your home now, you really should.” And the reasons why are equally simple: 1. Low inventory. 2. Continued demand. Our local market has become a year round market. Sure, more people do move in spring and summer but traditional sellers have an opportunity to shine if they list their homes when there are mostly distressed homes on the market. These very low interest rates and increasing news reports about stabilizing home prices, have gotten buyers off the proverbial fence and into the market. Homebuyers are waiting for well maintained and well-priced homes to hit the market. This is an opportunity few home sellers will take advantage of because they think people do not want to move in the winter, and some people don’t want the inconvenience of showing their homes during snowy weather. But in my experience, the buyers looking at homes in the winter months are very serious about buying a home.

Random Reads BRANDI SMITS The Scourge By Jennifer A. Nielsen Ani Mells will be the first one to admit it. She’s a bit of a wild card. She can be a bit sassy and no one is going to tell her what to do. Ani and her family are river folk. The river folk live away from the townspeople and are generally looked down upon. That’s just fine for Ani as a lethal plague called the Scourge is ripping its way through the towns. Ani’s heard that those who test positive for the Scourge are sent off to the Colony, an isolated island, from which no one ever returns. One day while she was climbing a tree, two of the governor’s wardens discovered Ani and, after a fight, took her into custody to be tested for the Scourge. Fortunately Ani’s friend Weevil saw what was happening and followed them into town. What comes next is a several escape attempts and an encounter with a young townsperson named Della. After helping Della, Ani is captured yet again. This time she is tested for the Scourge along with Della. Both test positive for the plague and must be sent to the Colony. Not to be left out, Weevil joins the girls as they are sent out to the island. It’s
soon clear that the three are never to leave. Ani, not one for going with the flow, immediately stands up to the wardens and is punished by being locked in a cage. Days pass and questions begin to form. Why is Weevil still not sick after being exposed to the Scourge? Why don’t the wardens get the Scourge? Is there really a cure? The more questions Ani asks, the more trouble she finds. The governor and her wardens now view her as a liability. Accidents happen and people die. Ani knows that it’s just a matter of time before the wardens succeed in quieting her for good. The Scourge is an adventurous mystery in a make believe land. Nielsen’s story combines an apocalyptic plague with a battle of classism. Ani is a much-needed strong female character who always puts her friends and family first. Ani is constantly underestimated by the adult characters until she cannot be silenced or ignored. While other characters may be more two dimensional, it just makes Ani stand out even more. I highly recommend picking this one up, even if it feels a bit predictable at times.

C A LU M E T C I T Y GR A DE S C HO OL / HIGH SCHOOL REUNIONS HIGHLIGHT JANUARY 2018: Linda Cyrnek Reinhardt, formerly of Ca lumet Cit y a nd now a Henderson, Nevada (a suburb of Las Vegas) resident of 30 years, is the architect of the annual school chums visit to the home of t he Smiley Towers. Linda is the sister of Dolly Cyrnek Biniecki of Calumet City. Dolly retired recently (and was wildly popular, so much so she was given a retirement part y!) from Aunt Sally’s Restaurant where she worked for many years. Her uniform was covered with angel pins, hence the ‘angel lady’ nickname. Dolly’s sister Linda comes to Calumet City each October to participate in the Walk for Breast Cancer. Sometimes the group meets then—this year it was decided that the whole crowd would give themselves a post-holiday treat and meet January 24 and January 26. They started out at Denny’s in Calumet City in River Oaks West. The group pictured consists of classmates from grade schools Our Lady of Knock and St. Victors, (1964) and TF North (1967); Toni and Michele are from Calumet City. Kathy and her husband drove in from Remmington, Indiana. Next the group gathered at Carrabas in Woodridge on January 26th; Grade School and High School grads from these same schools. The gals, plus whoever can meet up with them when the announcement is made (sometimes the group is bigger) are: Toni, Linda, Michele, Barbara, Patty, Sandy, Mary and Kathy. They gather from all parts of the city and country to meet once or twice a year. Linda noted that she is very happy and lucky to have these lifelong friends! *** ST. ANTHONY OF LANSING ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITY HOSTS POPULAR ENTERTAINER : The residents of t he recently opened assisted living facility, 3025 Spring Lake Drive in Lansing (near the Knights of Columbus center) has entertainment for the residents each week. This week, on Thursday,February 1, 2018 during Happy Hour (2-3) David Rolden will entertain with music and songs from yesterday and today.

From The Publisher
Back by Popular Demand: Free Copies of the Illinois Constitution ARLO KALLEMEYN So many people have stopped by The Shopper office to pick up their free copy of the Illinois Constitution that a second printing has been ordered. Thanks to a donation from State Rep Thaddeus Jones (29th District) Shopper readers can now obtain their very own copy. It is a 46-page book that contains the complete Constitution of the State of Illinois. Contrary to popular opinion, it is a very clear and concise document that is written in plain English. Here are some more excerpts to peak your interest: Due Process and Equal Protection – No person shall be deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law nor be denied equal protections of the law. Searches, Seizures, Privacy ad Interceptions – The people shall have the right to be secure in their persons, houses, papers and other possessions against unreasonable searches, seizures, invasions of privacy or interceptions of communications by eavesdropping devices or other means. Trial by Jury – The right of trial by jury shall remain inviolate. Imprisonment for Debt – No person shall be imprisoned for debt unless he refuses to deliver up his estate for the benefit of his creditors as provided by law. Separation of Powers – The legislative, executive and judicial branches are separate. No branch shall exercise powers properly belonging to another. Disqualification for Public Office – A person convicted of a felony, bribery, perjury or other infamous crime shall be ineligible to hold an office created by the Constitution. Tax Sales – Real property shall not be sold for the nonpayment of taxes or special assessments without judicial proceedings. Quartering of Soldiers – No soldier in time of peace shall be quartered in a house without the consent of the owner. Copies of the Illinois Constitution may be picked up at The Shopper office located at 924 E. 162nd Street in South Holland. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of the Illinois Constitution

RICHARD ZEKVELD “I can’t wait for ______.” How do you finish that sentence? My family and I discussed this over breakfast this morning. One of my children recalled being beside herself with excitement last summer as she thought of leaving for vacation the next day. I used to go beserk days before trips to my grandparents’ farm, running in circles and singing loud, made-up songs about going there. Then I grew up. But God never intended for us to outgrow childlike anticipation; the eager, beside-yourself longing for some future good. The Bible calls it hope. Do you have hope? Hope springs from faith in Christ – faith anchored in what he did for you in the past, who he is for you in the present and what he has for you in the future. “Out of the depths, I cry to you, O LORD! O Lord, hear my voice! I wait for
Lost & Found
the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning” (Psalm 130:1a,5-6, ESV). “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade – kept in heaven for you” (1 Peter 1:3-5, NIV). We are pilgrim people yearning, Looking for our perfect home! How we long for Christ, returning, To establish his shalom! Still we groan, with all creation, As we wait for full salvation. Anchor your faith and hope in Christ. Say out loud, “I can’t wait…!” Then dare to finish that sentence. Richard Zekveld, Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church
