Upward Bound and Talent Search Continue Legacy of Aiding Local Students

For many high school students, preparing for college can be both exciting and daunting, oftentimes mired with questions of which college to choose, how to fill out college applications and how to qualify for Pell Grants. Through the years, the Family Centered Educational Agency (FCEA) has partnered with Thornton Township District 205 to offer Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search (ETS) Enrichment programs, which have answered many puzzling questions for students headed to college. Under the auspices of the Trio Program, a federally funded initiative, Upward Bound and ETS were established in 1964 and 1965 through the U.S. Department of Education to help disadvantaged students apply for federal aid for college. Originally, the two programs fell under the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 but later was housed under the Trio program in 1968. The FCEA TRIO projects have served the Township since 1998. Since that time, thousands of students in District 205 have benefited from both programs. According to Matthew Dright, Program Coordinator of FCEA’s Educational Talent Search program (ETS), in past years, students who participated in the Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search programs have successfully enrolled in many Illinois universities and colleges

across the country. These colleges and universities include the University of Illinois at Urbana, University of Illinois at Chicago, Illinois State University of Iowa, Eastern Illinois University, Florida A&M, Moorehouse College, Fisk University, Tennessee State, to name a few of the many colleges students attend. “I’m a graduate of the Educational Talent Search program and I know that without the assistance of that program, I would not have received my four-year college degree. It’s beneficial from my standpoint,” Dright said. Both Upward Bound and ETS programs provide robust academic assistance to help student transition from high school to college. The FCEA website (www.familycentered.org) states that the program offers one-onone academic and personal counseling, assistance with completing financial aid forms and college/scholarship applications for post-secondary education, academic skills assessment, Personal and professional development programs, tutoring and test prep (ACT/ SAT, PSAT, PLAN, EXPLORE), among other assistance. Qualifying students from ages 11 through 27 can take part in the Educational Talent Search program provided that students have completed the fifth grade. Another criteria on FCEA’s website states that students must also have an academic need for support

as well as be a first-generation college student, which means the student’s mother, father or guardian did not graduate from a four-year college. “Through the years, the Upward Bound program has been a tremendous benefit to all students in District 205, particularly students who face socioeconomic concerns. We look forward to working and partnering with the Upward Bound program for many years to come,” said John Arrington, Director of College and Careers for District 205. According to Dright, participating students in both Upward Bound and the Educational Talent Search program have pursued degrees in fashion design, medicine, law, multimedia services, animal sciences, and marketing. He also added that the Upward Bound program has an alumni ceremony where college graduates are acknowledged. Dright stated that the majority of the students in FCEA’s Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search program are African-Americans and Hispanics; however, the program does not discriminate based on race. The program is free and for students to participate in Upward Bound, they must be enrolled in one of the three Thornton Township high schools or live in the target area. What is Sexual Harassment? SSC Offers Crucial Conversations Workshop The South Suburban College Business & Career Institute (BCI) presents a Breakfast with BCI Workshop titled Crucial Conversations: The Crisis of Sexual Harassment in the Workplace. The workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, February 13, 8:30–10:30am, with checkin and continental breakfast to begin at 8:15am. The workshop will be held at the South Suburban College Main Campus in the MB Financial Suite on the first floor, and

will be facilitated by Attorney Sonia D. Coleman and Alexandra Glumac, SSC Client Solutions Specialist. Coleman and Glumac will answer three important questions: What is sexual harassment? What do you do if you experience or witness it? Whose responsibility is it to stop it? Business owners, C-Suite executives, HR managers, supervisors, and employees are encouraged to attend.

Valentine’s Day ARLO KALLEMEYN Emperor Claudius II of Rome, also known as Claudius the Cruel, was having a difficult time recruiting men as soldiers. He believed that the men did not want to leave their sweethearts so he cancelled all engagements and marriages throughout Rome. Since young lovers still wanted to get married, and the Chapel of Love in Las Vegas was too far from Rome, another option was needed. A young Roman priest, St. Valentine, began secretly marrying couples. He was eventually caught, arrested and condemned. He was beaten to death and beheaded on February 14th, around the year 270. In honor of St. Valentine, give the love of your life a gift, a card, a phone call or a text—and give thanks we have a President instead of an Emperor! Question: We paid off our $150,000 mortgage balance recently. The houses in our area are on the market for between $320,000 and $390,000. We were told by one of our neighbors that a few other neighbors are upset with us for doing this, because it dropped the value of the homes in our area. Is this true? Answer: No. If a home sells for $500,000 it means the owner gets $500,000 in cash at closing whether the home is owned debtfree or the sellers owe up to their eye brows. The $500,000 is then reduced by closing costs, lien pay-offs, etc. Home values are determined by supply and demand. Easy financing and low rates create additional demand by expanding the pool of potential buyers. That a home is free and clear of all debt does not mean it is less valuable or more valuable in the marketplace. Question: I’m interested in purchasing a home that’s priced 9 percent above others in the neighborhood. The seller feels the price is justified since they installed a lot of upgrades. I submitted an offer that’s almost 2

percent higher than the neighborhood average price, and it was rejected. The home has been on the market for 122 days, is well kept and very nice, but I cannot see how it justifies nearly a 10 percent margin in price over the average. I want to offer the sellers a fair price for the home, but not overpay. What can I do? Answer: You are overthinking this. Real estate sale prices are established by informed buyers and sellers. If you don’t want to pay the seller’s price and the owner will not accept your offer, logic and reason are irrelevant -- the house won’t sell and you must look elsewhere. Hammond Sports Hall of Fame to Induct 7 on March 13 The Hammond Sports Hall of Fame will induct seven individuals from the city’s proud athletic past during its 32nd annual induction dinner, Tuesday, March 13 at the Hammond Civic Center. The inductees are: marathon runner, local road race pioneer and longtime exercise/wellness advocate John Bobalik (Bishop Noll), 1930s 3-sport Clark athlete and St. Louis Cardinals minor league baseball player Wilbur P. Buerckholtz, 1970s/80s Hammond High football quarterback and multi-sport athlete David Tyrone Higgs, 1990s Hammond High wrestler Elias (Lee) Marks, Minnesota Twins farmhand and 1990s multi-sport Bishop Noll performer Marcus Smith, award-winning high school football official/baseball umpire and 1960s multi-sport Hammond High athlete Rick Stanford and high-scoring 1960s Morton basketball front liner Frank Tokoly. Anderson-Peterson Family Distinguished Athlete Award recipients Also during the induction program, the Hammond Sports Hall of Fame’s 27th annual Anderson-Peterson Family Distinguished Athlete Award will be presented to two 2017 graduates of Hammond schools who depict the qualities for which the Hammond Sports Hall of Fame was established: dedication, contribution, ability, service and citizenship. The recipients are Brittany Lynn Anderson of Bishop Noll and Malcolm Lang of Gavit. Anderson earned 11 varsity letters and numerous postseason honors as a member of Warriors volleyball, softball and basketball squads. She graduated with academic distinction, was active at Noll as a peer tutor and in other activities, and she was a youth coach and summer camp volunteer. She attends Valparaiso University on a volleyball and softball scholarship. Lang achieved 12 varsity letters and all-conference recognition in football, wrestling and track & field. He also earned academic all-state honors in football. At Gavit, he participated in Natural Helpers and other school organizations. He has continued his education and football career at Wabash College. Time/Schedule Hall of Fame festivities begin at 5 p.m. with a social time. Dinner is at 6:30 p.m.; the induction program follows at 7:30.

The former Boston marathoner overall completed 20 marathons—5 during the 1970s in times of 2 hours, 39.1 minutes or faster. The former BNI and Lewis University runner also helped found the Calumet Region Striders Track Club and introduced the annual Highland Thanksgiving Pumpkin Plod road race. He coached at Noll, Highland and Munster High Schools. As a fitness expert, he initiated the Hammond Clinic Corporate Fitness Program and co-developed the Purdue University Northwest Fitness Center. WILBUR P. BUERCKHOLTZ While attending Clark High School during the late 1930s, he excelled as a basketball center and track & field jumper and shot putter. But it was on the baseball field, playing in American Legion and semi-pro circuits that he attracted the interest of the St. Louis Cardinals. From 1939 through ’41 and again in ’46, after serving his country in World War II, he competed for Cardinals farm teams in Hamilton, Ontario; Lynchburg, Va.; Duluth, Minn.; and Columbus, Ohio. DAVID TYRONE HIGGS Within the proud, accomplished stable of Hammond High football quarterbacks, this 1982 alumnus had athletic ability second to none. ELIAS (LEE) MARKS As a senior, this 1993 Hammond High graduate won the Indiana high school state wrestling championship at 125 lbs. He followed that by earning All-American status with a 4th place finish in the ‘93 National High School Wrestling Championships. During the same year he also won the Indiana Wrestling Freestyle State Championship at 127 lbs. At Hammond High, in addition to his state championship, he compiled a 4-season record of 112-13-1, was a 2-time semistate runner-up and won 9 regional, sectional and conference titles. MARCUS SMITH He was a 1993 Class 3A all-state football wide receiver for Bishop Noll, but it was on the baseball field where the talented outfielder attracted big time attention. After belting 4 home runs in a single game as a high school senior and gaining numerous honors, he went on to play at Valencia Community College. In ’96 he received a scholarship offer from the University of Central Florida, but opted instead to sign and play with the Minnesota Twins farm system. RICK STANFORD The playing achievements of this 1969 Hammond High alumnus are impressive enough: football all-state honorable mention, 4-year baseball letterman and basketball monogram recipient. What followed may be even more impressive: an award-winning, 40-year career (1972-2012) as a high school football official and baseball umpire. He worked state title games in football in ‘87, ’99, ‘03 & ’07 and in baseball in ’88. The Indiana High School Athletic Association honored him in 2013 as Football Official of the Year. FRANK TOKOLY This Class of 1967 Morton basketball standout was one of NW Indiana’s top scorers his senior season with a 22.5 average. He also contributed a scoring-rebounding double-double effort during the Governors’ 65-62, Hammond Sectional 1st round upset victory over state-ranked Hammond High in ’67. Additionally, he combined athleticism and size as an allconference end for the ’66, state-ranked Governors’ football squad.

What’s the Investment Outlook for 2018? BOB KRYGSHELD By most measures, 2017 was a pretty good year for investors. But what can you expect in 2018? It’s difficult to precisely predict the immediate future of the financial markets. However, many signs point to improved global economic growth and rising corporate earnings—both of which are important drivers of stock prices. In the United States, economic growth may be more modest than in other regions, which could result in international stocks outperforming domestic ones. Here’s another consideration: Low interest rates typically benefit the financial markets—and unless inflation jumps sharply, the Federal Reserve will probably remain patient, only raising short-term rates slowly throughout 2018. Despite these positive signs, there’s also reason for caution. Political uncertainty and changes in economic policies may lead to increased market volatility. Another factor is the long-term history of the stock market, which includes a correction (drop of 10% or more), about once a year. We’ve gone two years since the last correction, so it would not be surprising if we saw one in 2018. Given this outlook— which could be classified as “moderately optimistic” —what investment moves should you consider this year? Here are a few suggestions: • Rebalance your portfolio. The market’s gains may have increased the value of your stocks so much that they now represent a greater percentage of your portfolio than you had intended, so you may want to rebalance your portfolio to achieve a suitable mix of stocks and bonds, based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. As part of this rebalancing, and in an effort to help reduce the impact of market volatility, you may need to add investment-grade bonds

and cash investments. (Of course, bonds carry some risks, too, including interest rate risk and credit risk.) The availability of cash will also make it easier for you to purchase stocks during a market downturn, when prices may be lower. • Look beyond U.S. borders. Consider adding some international equity investments to your portfolio, if appropriate. These stocks may do better than U.S. stocks in 2018, but regardless of performance, the presence of global stocks can help diversify your portfolio —and diversification can help decrease your overall risk level. (However, diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses.) Keep in mind that international investing carries some inherent risks, such as those related to currency fluctuations and foreign political and economic events. • Be aware of “big” versus “little”. If you don’t own many stocks of smaller companies, you might consider adding them to your portfolio. Smaller U.S. stocks have traditionally outperformed larger ones and may benefit from stronger economic growth and lower corporate tax rates. Be aware, though that small company stocks tend to be more volatile than those of larger companies. And, as with all stock investments, you may risk losing some or all of your principal. You may want to consult with a financial professional to determine which of these moves, or any others, are right for you. You can’t control the external factors affecting the financial markets, but you can take total charge of your own investment decisions—and in the long run, these decisions can help determine your success as an investor. Traffic Safety Advisory Committee Votes in Favor of Anti-DUI Proposals Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White’s Traffic Safety Advisory Committee voted to endorse three impaired driving proposals designed to make Illinois roads safer by reducing crashes and fatalities. The advisory committee endorsed the following measures: • Strengthen prosecution of DUI by allowing prosecutors to introduce as evidence past DUI offenses committed by the defendant to a jury during a trial. Currently, the law does not allow past

DUI convictions to be introduced as evidence during a jury trial. • Strengthen DUI laws by revising the statue defining a first-time DUI offender. Under current statutory summary suspension law, motorists are considered first-time DUI offenders if five or more years have passed since their last DUI. • Tighten the reporting of rescissions of statutory summary suspension by the courts. Currently, courts may rescind a statutory summary

suspension from the driver record for any reason and are not required to identify the reason for the rescission. The advisory committee, comprised of legislators, federal and state traffic safety experts and law enforcement officials, met previously on Jan. 18 to hear expert witness testimony from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists (AAAIM), law enforcement and other officials on impaired driving issues.

Students at Christ Our Savior Catholic School in South Holland celebrated Catholic Schools Week with many events and activities including a visit by author Janet Riehecky. MIKE BUDER Some buyers and sellers wonder whether they can save money by not using a Realtor for their home sale and/or purchase. I will do my best to explain the variables for different types of transactions. SELLING A HOME. You will probably be best served to hire a Realtor to list it for you and to represent your interests throughout the transaction. This is known as a “fiduciary responsibility,” and Realtors must abide by a code of ethics—which means we are working for you alone, not our own interests or those of the buyer. Realtors must treat everyone fairly, but for negotiations it is very helpful to be represented by a professional. This also applies to exposure for your home. More than 80% of homes sell in the MLS. It will behoove you to have a fullservice agent who can help with pricing, photography, staging, marketing, negotiations, inspections (which sometimes lead to additional negotiations), and the closing process itself. If you try to go it alone, the statistics show that “For Sale by Owner” homes eventually end up listing with a realtor around 85% of the time. Buying a RESALE HOME, you could go directly to the listing agent in an attempt to get them to discount services because you have no agent

helping you. They however are under no obligation to give you any of their commission. Additionally, since the listing agent is representing the seller, they are on the other team and working against you with regard to the sale price and repair negotiations, so it could end up costing you more. BUYING NEW CONSTRUCTION. Builder pricing normally includes agent commissions. Reputable builders will not discount or undercut Realtors because they bring them a lion’s share of their business. So the bottom line is that although it is possible, you probably won’t save money if you choose not to hire an agent. This is beside the additional time spent and stress involved. N O R T H REUNION REMEMBER WHEN: The grads came from all 4 corners of the country during last month’s reunion in 2 different places, on the south side in Calumet City and on the north side at Carrabas in Woodridge, Il. The grads all attended St. Victors or Our Lady of Knock and T.F .North in Ca lumet Cit y. Through the years they ave remained chums and stuck together. On the south side thye dined at Denny’s in RiverOaks west. That group included Tony and Michele are from Calumet City, Kathy and her husband drove in Remmington, Indfana. In the next photo the group gathered at Carrabas in Woodridge on January 26th, 2018 The gas are Toni, Linda, Michele, Barbara, Patty, sandy, Mary, Kathy. They gathered from all parts of he country and meet once or twice a year. This particular year, the gals gathered together for, in addition to meeting once more, to allow the Cyrnek sisters, Dolly, Geri and Linda, to close on their parents’ house. Only Linda is a member of he reunion gathering and his has been active on t he pla nning committee each year! *** ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST WINTERFEST HONORS HOMETOW N HEROES : A salute to First Responders. The event takes place on Friday Saturday and Sunday on February, 9, 10, 11 in Whiting. Some of the fun events include a beer garden, silent auction, a teen dance, Rosary Society, Crafts, HSA Bake sale, and lots of family fun. Friday from 6-11 a Mexican dinner will be served; Saturday a Slovak dinner will be served and on Sunday a chicken dinner with all trimmings. RICHARD ZEKVELD Who are you in conflict? Are you a peace-breaker? A peace-faker? Or a peace-maker? Is your pattern fight, flight or face it for the sake of relationship?1 A peace-breaker attacks. The goal: to win at all costs. He must win to be OK. Fingerpointing, fists, accusation, assault— whatever it takes. “I’ll slander you, sue you, smack you down if need be.” A peace-faker avoids. The goal: escape at all costs. She must escape to be OK. She ignores, denies and runs. “Problem? What problem? I’m fine!” “Don’t bring it up. I don’t want any trouble. I just won’t go back.” Sometimes the peace-faker, when backed into a corner, moves from flight to fight. Peace-fakers are often skilled at ‘sniping from the bushes’: the cold shoulder, the subtle, snide comment, followed by, “Everything’s fine!” A peace-maker engages conflict with love and humble boldness. The goal: relationship. The peace-maker understands that things may get worse

before they get better as we get real about our issues, as we address our problems in relationship. Things may get scary and messy. But the peace-making heart says, “My passion is to defeat the problem, not you, to restore and deepen relationship.” Jesus is the ultimate peace-maker. He did not come to earth to destroy us but to destroy the barriers to our relationship with God—our sin, self-centeredness and Satan. His goal: relationship at ultimate cost— his life. Jesus also addresses our barriers to relationshipself-centeredness, idolatry and destructive patterns. He calls us to confess them and turn from them to him. His goal: relationship. We can trust him to guide and empower us as we navigate the hard, rewarding path of the peacemaker.
