Black Authors Book Club Invites Readers to Visit in February, and Stay for the Year By Patricia Muhammad February is Black History Month, and the Black Authors Book Club (BABC) in Dolton invites the community to join them this month and throughout the year to read selected biographies, autobiographies and novels about Blacks in entertainment, politics and history. “The book club has been around for more than 16 years.” said Ernest Wallace, president of BABC. “I became president in 2011, and since then, we’ve revamped the book club where we select one book to read each month. Some of the books we read in 2017 were the biography of John H. Johnson, founder of Ebony magazine, and the memoir of Dionne

Warwick (My Life as I See It).” Last month the group read Friends: A Love Story by Hollywood’s husband and wife actors, Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance, and this month the book club will read Richard Pryor’s Pryor Convictions And Other Life Sentences. One of the most famous and influential comedians of all time, Prior impacted many who came after him. Patricia Kennerson, who started out with the book club in 2002, stated that through the book club reading, readers glean a lot of information that one wouldn’t receive from news networks. “There is a lot of information that you will learn about black entertainers and those in politics. Thornwood HS’s PSAT Program Serves as a Model for District By Patricia Muhammad In conjunction with the Sylvan Learning Center, the SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) staff at Thornwood High School have developed a cohort system designed specifically to help students obtain the highest possible scores on their SAT exams, according to Maria M. Brown, Division Leader for English, Reading, Speech, and Library at Thornwood. Brown stated that she, along with Thornwood parents and community stakeholders, agree that the SAT program serves as a model for District 205. Listed are several SAT components put into place to make the program shine. Thornwood has implemented SAT afterschool classes held Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. Brown explained that on Tuesdays, two math teachers are selected to go over Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test (PSAT) prep lessons and on Thursdays, two English teachers are in the classroom to train the students on test-taking methods. To understand all aspect of the SAT exam, the sophomore and junior attendees rotate around Science, English, and Math classes. “We’ve seen an uptick in the number of students who are showing up in the afterschool and Saturday PSAT program. I can say about 30 students participate in the program each day, which totals about 90 a week. About 52 students come every single Saturday for the PSAT program,” Brown said. Another component that makes Thornwood’s PSAT program unique is the school’s SAT University. SAT University is in its second year, with classes running from June 6th through July 21st. The program has an enrollment of about 60 juniors and sophomores. At SAT University, students see a 70 point growth average in their scores, which is high, according to Brown. She added that PSAT growth average is normally between 30 to 40 points. As part of SAT University, students can chart their level of growth online through Method Test Prep, a website that assist students with the ins and outs of SAT exam preparation.

“Method Test Prep shows students how they are growing over the six weeks while attending SAT University,” Brown said. During the first week of October, the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test/National Merit Scholastic Qualifying Test) is administered to students at Thornwood and is usually held one day, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. According to College Readiness, an online PSAT website, more than 3.5 million students nationwide take the PSAT test each year. Thornwood PSAT participants include sophomore and junior International Baccalaureate (IB) students, Advanced Placement (AP) students, and regular students seeking to increase their test scores as they prepare for college. Parental involvement is yet another unique component implemented by Thornwood’s PSAT program. Parental involvement during Saturday’s SAT classes serves as a support system. Brown said, “On Saturday, parents drive students to the school to ensure that students are participating in the program at their highest possible level.” “I’m very pleased with the SAT program,” said Thornwood HS Principal Dennis D. Willis. “The teachers who are vested in wanting to see the students successful and getting the students trained (for SAT exams) are not doing it just for compensation, but they genuinely want to see the students do well on the test. I’m excited about this. We are working with trained SAT staff and the Sylvan Learning Center, who assists with both afterschool and Saturday classes. The two programs run simultaneously, and students determine which class will benefit them the most.” Thornwood SAT staff are very involved in how the PSAT program is structured. Brown explained, “Our teachers don’t implement cookie-cutter methods, like teaching students the average strategies approved by the College Board. We have high expectations of our teachers and in turn, the teachers have high expectations of the students.” As part of the PSAT program, students are expected to write an argumentative essay on evidence-based writing, as well as Snowblower Repair by Riccos Repair Ser vice. Lansing Illinois Home to Military Museum by Arlo Kallemeyn

Crescent Jewelers has been open since 1992 in Lansing, Illinois and specializes in assisting it’s many customers with fine jewelry including diamonds, watches and precious gems. The jewelry store occupies the first floor of the building located at 18049 Torrence Ave. The basement level of the jewelry store is where thousands of military memorabilia and relics are housed. Medals from World War 2 on display at Crescent Jewelers Owner Bill Crescent and museum curator David Hilpp recently extended an invitation to the Issac Walton Club of Dolton for a Saturday morning tour. We took the back stairway into the basement and we literally stepped back in time. Thousands of war memorabilia are displayed that span hundreds of years. Bill and David have a story that goes with each item and many are attached to personal stories about how the item came to reside in the museum. Thousands of remnants are carefully preserved and include an ancient samurai warrior, helmets, daggers, and variety bomber jackets, uniforms and war medals. There are also newspaper articles of local war heroes who have earned the highest honors including Sgt. LeRoy Peterson of South Holland who died in World War 2 and was awarded the Purple Heart. Most items were acquired from World War II veterans or their families. Many family members have entrusted their items to Crescent Jewelers because they know that their loved one’s memories will preserved to honor their family and the sacrifice they made. Bill shared that he has been collecting war relics since the age of 12 and now conducting buying events in many Midwest states including Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Crescent said. “These items all have a story behind them and they say more about history than many textbooks.” I came away from the tour with a profound sense of gratitude for the sacrifice that so many men and women have made so we are able to enjoy the freedom we have in this country. Enshrined in our US Constitution are freedoms that include religious freedom, freedom of speech, and the freedom to peacefully assemble. The second amendment of the US Constitution gives every citizen the right to bear arms. It is my belief that these rights are US Navy Mark 15 Norden Bombsight protected by the brave soldiers of our country Samurai Warrior and they deserve our honor and gratitude. The military museum at Crescent Jewelers is a testament to the honor due to these brave soldiers - both past and present. Local Family Raises Money in Hopes to Derail Pediatric Cancer The Shelbourne family partnered with the Northwest Indiana Cancer Kids (NICK) Foundation recently for a fundraiser at Tyler’s Tender where all the proceeds will go toward pediatric cancer research. All the proceeds from the event and Tyler’s Tender’s charitable donation of 15 percent of each bill will be lumped together in a check to Riley Children’s Hospital. The Shelbourne family chose to donate to the hospital where their son was treated. The Shelbourne family lost a son and a brother on Sept. 10, 2012, when a brain tumor took Adler Shelbourne’s life at 3 years old. They celebrate Adler’s birthday through a fundraiser in hopes to one day see a cure for their son’s disease. “Research for childhood cancer is very underfunded. A lot of the times people end up losing hope that there will one day be a cure,” said the child’s mother, Stephanie Shelbourne. “You need to spread your wings in order to get more people involved.” The well-attended event attracted young families who participated in face painting and balloon artist booths. Many of the items in the silent auction were kid-themed to give families the opportunity to donate.

“These events and fundraisers are so important to finding a cure,” said Nicole Yarrow, director of services at the NICK Foundation. “Working with the Shelbourne family makes my heart full because we are keeping Adler’s memory alive and funding research so other families don’t have to endure what the Shelbournes did.” Last year’s birthday celebration of Adler raised approximately $3,000 toward the cause. The Shelbournes asked Tyler’s Tender to host the event because Adler’s favorite restaurant was Tyler’s Tenders and some of his favorite train collections could be put on display. “The NICK Foundation is such an amazing foundation,” Shelbourne said. “When Adler was first diagnosed, we were presented with a bunch of gift cards for gas and groceries, and of course, toys for Adler. Most importantly it was the constant support that got us through.” The NICK Foundation is non-profit pediatric cancer organization founded in 2009. The foundation provides emotional, social, and financial support to families affected by pediatric cancer. Pullman, after the Civil War, built a town to house employees for his railroad car company. Once his company built the cars, formerly enslaved men were hired as porters to serve passengers. Deadline Extended for Cook County Senior Tax Exemptions Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios announced on February 7th that his office has extended the deadline for the Senior Citizen Exemption and Senior Freeze Exemption renewal applications and new applications for Tax Year 2017. The extended application deadline is March 2, 2018. Any application postmarked by Friday, March 2nd will be on time. The original deadline was February 7. More than 270,000 application forms were mailed in early January to seniors who received the exemptions last year. The Senior Exemption application is part of a booklet that also contains the separate, income-based Senior Freeze Exemption application. Tax Year 2017 taxes are billed and mailed in 2018. Savings appear as deductions on Second Installment Property Tax Bills which will be issued this summer. ”I extended the deadline so all seniors have extra time to return their applications to ensure they receive the expanded exemption savings this year,” Berrios said. “It is also important to remember that under Illinois law, seniors are required to reapply annually for both the Senior and Senior Freeze Exemptions.” To qualify for the Senior Citizen Exemption for Tax Year 2017, the property owner must have: • been born prior to or in the year 1952, • owned the property, or have a lease or contract which makes them responsible for the real estate taxes, and • used the property as a principal place of residence. Please Note: The new law will increase savings this year for the Senior Exemption from $5,000 to $8,000 in Equalized Assessed Value (EAV). It is important to note that the exemption amount is not the dollar amount by which a tax bill is reduced. EAV is the partial value of a property to which tax rates are applied; it is this figure on which a tax bill is calculated. The Assessor does not set tax rates. The savings for a Senior Citizen Exemption is calculated by multiplying the exemption savings of $8,000 by the local tax rate. To qualify for the Senior Freeze Exemption for Tax Year 2017, taxpayers must have:

• been born prior to or in the year 1952, • a total household income of $65,000 or less for [income] Tax Year 2016, • owned the property or had a legal, equitable or leasehold interest in the property on January 1, 2016 and January 1, 2017, • used the property as a principal place of residence as of January 1, 2016 and January 1, 2017, and • been responsible for the payment of 2016 and 2017 property taxes. Please Note: The new law expands eligibility by increasing allowable total household income to $65,000, from the previous limit of $55,000. There is also a new minimum $2,000 EAV deduction for the Senior Freeze, which will help offset increases in assessed value and help ensure that more seniors benefit from the Senior Exemption. “If you don’t qualify for the Senior Freeze Exemption because you exceed the income level, this does not mean you will not be eligible for the Senior Exemption,” Berrios explained. “The Senior Exemption has no income restrictions, and I’m concerned that seniors might discard the entire booklet and not receive the Senior Exemption savings to which they are entitled.” Seniors receiving the Senior Citizen Exemption automatically receive the Homeowner Exemption. Seniors receiving the Senior Freeze Exemption automatically receive both the Homeowner and Senior Citizen Exemptions. Eligible seniors who have never applied for the Senior and/or Senior Freeze Exemptions in the past, may visit the Assessor’s web site at www.cookcountyassessor.com and download an application, or contact the Assessor’s Office at 312-443-7550 and request a form be mailed to them. Applications for the Homeowner Exemption and additional exemptions administered by the Assessor’s Office will also be made available online. “One of the top concerns I hear through our Community Outreach Program is that seniors are struggling to make ends meet,” Berrios said. “I will continue to work for greater tax relief for seniors to ensure they can stay in their homes without worrying about the affordability of their property taxes.”

WOODROW WILCOX On December 5, 2017, I helped a client who is an immigrant from India with Medicare related medical bill problems. The man is very intelligent. He has an advanced degree. But, he could not understand or fix his medical bill problems. When we met at my office, the first thing I had him do was to show me all the medical bills that were not getting paid and any other papers with information related to the unpaid bills. He was starting to get payment demand letters. When I saw the papers and heard his story, I knew what the problem was. Together, we made two phone calls so that I could collect a little more information. Then, I typed letters to every doctor or medical service that wanted money from him. In the letters, I explained the problem and asked the billing party to send essential information to our client’s insurance company so that the bills could be paid. What was the problem? Medicare was slow, irresponsible, and unprofessional. Our client switched from an employer group health insurance plan to coverage from Medicare and a Medicare supplement insurance policy on August 1, 2017. Timely notice was sent to Medicare ahead of that

switch date. But, Medicare never updated our client’s file until November 2, 2017. Thus, every medical bill incurred between August 1, 2017 and November 2, 2017 was processed incorrectly by Medicare. Medicare was denying all the claims because its records did not yet show that our client was on Medicare. This happens often. If a senior citizen does not get help from someone who knows how to handle this problem, the senior citizen is badgered until the bill is paid. The Medicare system is failing seniors by not updating files in a timely manner and costing senior citizens OVER ONE BILLION DOLLARS PER YEAR IN FALSE MEDICAL BILLS ON JUST PART B CLAIMS. When will Congress and the President act to discipline Medicare to stop failing seniors? This year’s Black History Gala will feature the Afro Blues Ensemble’s 100th Birthday celebration of Dizzy Gillespie and Ella Fitzgerald on Wednesday, February 21, in the Performing Arts Center (PAC). The one-hour concert will begin at 7:00pm and will be followed by a “Soul Food” buffet from 8:009:00pm. This unique ensemble, led by Art “Turk” Burton, Master Percussionist, will feature other world-class musicians, highlighting their musical genius. Dizzy John “Dizzy Gillespie” Birks is considered one of the greatest trumpeters of all time. He was a trumpet virtuoso and improviser. His beret and horn-rimmed glasses, his scat singing, his bent horn, pouched cheeks, and light-hearted personality were essential in popularizing Afro-Cuban Jazz, Latin Jazz, and bebop. Always a musical ambassador, he toured Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America under the sponsorship of the U.S. State Department. Gillespie left a legacy of goodwill and good humor that infused jazz musicians and fans throughout the world with a genuine sense of jazz’s ability to transcend national and ethnic boundaries. For this reason, Gillespie was and is an “international treasure.”

Ella Dubbed the “First Lady of Song,” Ella Fitzgerald was the most popular female jazz singer in the United States for more than 50 years. In her lifetime, she won 13 Grammy Awards and sold over 40 million albums. Her voice was flexible, wide-ranging, accurate, and ageless. She sang sultry ballads and sweet jazz, and could imitate every instrument in an orchestra. Fitzgerald worked with jazz greats Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, and Dizzy Gillespie. She performed at top venues all over the world to diverse audiences. Nurse Emanuel had just left for home after an 11-and-a-half hour shift! They gave out their TLC even though they were tired themselves. He said it to his brothers, whose evil tore him from all he knew and loved, landed him in slavery on foreign soil and left his father broken. Their evil determined the course of his life. So why wasn’t he bitter? “You intended to harm me. But God intended it for good.” That’s why Joseph wasn’t bitter. His

When is it time to say goodbye to a house you love? I remember being very impressed with the property on my first visit. The 100 year-old farm house shone with careful restoration and charm. The acreage that surrounded it was dotted with heirloom fruit trees and organic pathways winding through a variety of flower and veggie gardens. The owner, and mother of one of my recent clients, wanted my opinion as to its value. True comps were hard to find, but we came up with a plan for pricing. Years of taking care of the house on her own (after her husband died) had taken its toll. She longed for a new vision and new adventures. It didn’t take long to get an offer, and fortunately it was a cash buyer with plenty of motivation. The couple, who owned and adjacent property, wanted to buy the house for their daughter and son-in-law. Getting a loan on the property might have been difficult.
