By Patricia Muhammad Band students at Thornwood High School have a lot of reasons to toot their own horn. The band, composed of 65 members, is an example that it isn’t the number of people in the band that makes it great, it’s the collective effort and A-1 performance that makes a great band. The band is mixed with freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Band Director Dwayne Sanders is confident in his band, though he intends to push the his students towards greater heights. “Recently, we had an opportunity to perform and compete in the Rich Central High School Battle of the Bands,” he says. “We won first place as grand champions. Our status as grand champion was regardless of class, or whether it for show style or corp style. And we won a second time in a row. That was very good for us and our students enjoyed that.” The band’s streak of achievements didn’t stop there. The band won first in the Drumline category during the Rich Central High competition, and also received an award in the Best Winds competition. The band won first place for the Triple-A (AAA) category. Another noteworthy performance was its participation in a local parade. “We were privileged to perform in Band

Day at Northwestern University in September 2017,” said Sanders. “We also participated in the Bud Billiken Day Parade in August 2017.” During the upcoming 2018-2019 school year, the band will perform in the well-known Chicago Thanksgiving Day Parade, an annual parade that attracts thousands of onlookers. “Once we get into the fall season of this year, we will start preparing for that as we move forward,” Sanders said. Locally, the band is called upon to perform in events across South Holland and the south suburbs. Sanders said, “We continue to perform in the surrounding areas and community as well. Over the Valentine’s Day weekend, we just enjoyed a festival at Prairie State College along with performing at the South Holland Library for the Black History Celebration.” At the end of the school year, the band department will host its Band Achievement Award for graduating seniors. Along with musical scholarships, seniors having the highest GPA will be recognized. A west side native of Chicago, Sanders received his Bachelor Degree in Music at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and was awarded his Masters’ Degree in Music Education at
Vandercook College of Music. Y.L.Douglas, Director of Bands at Thornridge High School, offered accolades to Sanders and the many achievements the band has received thus far. He offered a compliment to his friend and colleague: “Mr. Sanders is a true asset to Thornwood High School community and District 205. He brings professionalism and a true passion for the development of his student. He has won in his short tenure (at Thornwood) several championship trophies and has given new experiences to the students he serves. I wish Mr. Sanders and the Thornwood High School Band all the best as he and the band continue to soar to higher heights,” Douglas said. Sander’s wish is that all of his students will make a positive impact in the world. “I want all of my students to become good contributors to society by having studied music at Thornwood,” he said. The band will have a Snapraise.com fundraiser from February 4th through March 13th. Sanders said the goal is to raise $4,000 with hopes to exceed that amount. The purpose of the fundraiser is to raise funds toward transportation needed for out of town trips, summer scholarships and to move the band program forward.

U.S. Passport Fee to Increase to $35 Effective April 2, 2018, the passport execution fee will increase from $25 to $35. The $10 execution fee increase applies to U.S. passport applicants using the DS-11 form, including first-time applicants over age 16, children under age 16, and applicants who re-apply after reporting their previous passport lost or stolen. Customers applying with the DS-11 form pay two separate fees: an application fee to the U.S. Department of State and the execution fee to the Passport Acceptance Facility. Passport Acceptance Facilities such as post offices, clerks of court, or libraries are designated to accept passport applications on behalf of the U.S. Department of State. With more than 7,600 acceptance facility locations, customers applying for the first time can find a convenient location to apply for their passport. Some acceptance facilities are open nights and weekends and take passport photos on-site. Find a Passport Acceptance Facility near you at iafdb.travel.state.gov. The $10 fee increase does not apply to adults eligible to renew their passport by mail using the DS-82 form. Renewal customers can mail their application and supporting documentation to the Department of State and should not apply at a Passport Acceptance Facility or pay an execution fee. Visit travel.state.gov/renew for more information on renewing your passport. Historically, U.S. passport demand is highest from February through August. The Department of State recommends customers apply for their passport at least ten weeks prior to international travel. If you are traveling in less than six weeks, we encourage you to expedite your application. Expedite service costs an additional $60 per application. There are 27 passport agencies where customers can apply for urgent passports if they are traveling internationally within two weeks. Appointments can be made online at PassportAppointment.travel.state.gov or by phone at 877487-2778 or TDD/TDY at 888-874-7793. For information on applying for a U.S. passport, forms, fees, and processing times, please visit Travel.State.Gov.

American Red Cross & United Way Assist Local Flood Victims The recent flooding experienced here in Northwest Indiana has forced many people to evacuate their homes and seek refuge and resources. The Northwest Indiana Chapter of the American Red Cross is working to help support Lake, Porter & LaPorte County flood victims with grant funds provided by United Way and is committed to supporting residents in affected areas. They will continue to work together with United Ways and other partner groups including Emergency Management Agencies and first responders to make sure people have their basic needs met. Individuals or families affected by the storms are encouraged to contact the Indiana Region of the American Red Cross at: 1-888-684-1441 or to visit http://rdcrss.org/2vwsuFf to find information on current shelter locations. The site also has information on what to bring and what not to bring to the shelter, who can stay at the shelter and the services offered during a disaster or emergency. As of publication, New Life Community Church, located at 1 N Pennsylvania Street in Hobart, is serving the needs of Lake County flood victims as a shelter location. American Red Cross also offers and Emergency App that can help residents stay up-to-date on the latest weather hazards and shelter locations. Available for both smart phones and tablets, Apple and Android devices, it includes content on what to do before, during and after a variety of severe weather events. Users can customize more than 35 emergency weather alerts based on their location and where loved ones live. For those not in need of disaster services but desiring to get involved the American Red Cross is accepting volunteer applications at www.redcross.org. In-kind donations such

as food, clothing or medicine, while valuable, are not suggested at this time as American Red Cross does not have the capacity to sort, inspect or distribute these items. It is essential that these donations meet safety guidelines and at times American Red Cross partner organizations can help to manage donations like these. At times like these it is important to remember to use caution not only during active flooding events but also during the clean-up process. Here are a few guidelines to follow to help promote safety: • Be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice and have an emergency response kit; return only when authorities say it is safe to do so • People should stay away from floodwaters both while on foot and while driving • Be especially cautious at night • Children are curious and should be kept out of the water • Before entering your home, look outside for loose power lines, damaged gas lines, foundation cracks or other damages and be aware of hissing noises or the smell of gas • If power lines are down outside your home, do not step in puddles or standing water. • Discard food items that have come in contact with floodwater. When in doubt, throw it out! • During cleanup, wear protective clothing, including rubber gloves and rubber boots. If you have questions or need additional information, please contact Kristin MarlowKellemen, Executive Director of the American Red Cross – Northwest Indiana Chapter. She can be reached at 219-756-5360 or kristin. marlowkellem@redcross.org.

REV. MATT WATERSTONE, FIRST REFORMED CHURCH OF SOUTH HOLLAND As I sit down to write this letter, I do so without a fever, without achy skin and without needing to be near a toilet. I’m thankful. I’ve been a pastor for nearly ten years and I’ve never, up until now, been apprehensive about going into a hospital or nursing home to visit someone for fear of getting sick. This year’s flu strain is particularly nasty. Many of you have been down for the count. And if you haven’t, you’re almost waiting for it. So now I find myself constantly analyzing every situation for contact with germs. I try to open doors with an elbow. I wash my hands 4789078907890 times a day. I don’t touch the railing on the stairs. I walk around with disinfectant wipes. I’ve actually been thinking about that a lot lately. How vulnerable we are when we are sick. How dependent we are upon others when we are sick. How physically and emotionally depleted we are when we are sick. And then I think about those who live alone, who are elderly or single and how that dynamic is all the more stressful during flu season. And I write this 100% admitting that I am a huge baby when it comes to being sick. That whole “Man-flu,” well I fully believe it is real! But it does have me reflecting on how we can care for one

another. Maybe it would be good to pick up the phone and give your neighbor a call and see how they are doing. Maybe you could send a text to the person who is sick and see if they need anything. Maybe you could shovel the driveway of the elderly couple down the street. Maybe you could pick up some soup or better yet, a few bottles of Nyquil for someone sick with the flu. These are such simple things we can do to be our brother and our sister’s keeper. Especially for those of you who have already endured the death flu and perhaps have a bit more empathy for those who are sweating and shivering in bed. Jesus once said, “It’s not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.” My friends, if we are willing to be just a little more aware, a little more intentional, a little more “others-oriented,” we will begin to act on those opportunities when we can be the very presence of Jesus in other’s lives. There are certainly a lot of those who are sick right now. And while they may be quarantined in their homes, they most definitely could use the love and care from the body of Christ. Would you, would I, be willing to show them the love of Christ?

RICHARD ZEKVELD in him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). God’s Son became a human being to take our place as our Substitute. He lived the life we should have lived—a life of love for God and others. He died the death we deserve to die – hellish death under God’s judgment. Graham called listeners to confess their guilt, trust in Jesus as Savior and submit to him as Lord. He called them to receive God’s gift of salvation and respond with love and obedience. Billy Graham reminds us that gospel power exceeds that of the sword or any social agenda. “I am not ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16a). Richard Zekveld, Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church. 1 Russell Moore. “Billy Graham Bore Witness for 99 Years” in The Wall Street Journal. February 21,2018.

Dinner, Steel Magnolias and a Makeover—What’s Not to Like?
Heart Smart ‘“Modern people simply cannot accept the supernatural basis of Billy Graham’s gospel . . . Billy Graham should change his gospel or he will never reach our world as it is.” A bishop spoke these words, recalls Russell Moore, in a nearly empty church. Realtors: We’re Not Perfect MIKE BUDER What makes a great Realtor? Certainly not perfection; there’s no such thing. My feeling is that if you actually try, try, try and do your best for your clients, even if you are unsuccessful, you have not failed. If you put your best foot forward, remain honest and sincere and place your clients’ needs first and foremost, if you truly work to do the right thing even if it means losing a commission, then you are one of the best. We’ve all heard that real estate agents are in it for themselves and are not to be trusted. Our business has changed drastically over the past ten years, and there’s nothing easy about being a Realtor. There is no consistency in lending practices and still no stabilization of home prices. Even though I communicate constantly with attorneys, lenders, appraisers, title officers, and fellow Realtors to keep current on industry changes and trends, I have still had people hopping mad at me. I probably deserved it. I have felt that I dropped the ball and could have done better for my clients. I don’t like that feeling and I’m sure most Realtors don’t. On the
other hand, we have also had some deals process and close so smoothly that people would question our deserving to be paid a commission. Here is a valuable tip: When professionals make their work appear easy, be it a dentist, mechanic, carpenter, etc., it isn’t necessarily a reflection of the simplicity of the tasks. There is also the possibility it’s the fruit of accumulated experience and acquired wisdom at their trade. Translated: The simpler your Realtor makes the purchase or sale look and feel, the more value you got for your investment. The hope and desire of most Realtors is that we leave a good enough impression to have our clients/customers speak highly of us. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/ MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@ remax.net, Website: w w w. B u d e r H o m e s . com. Paplomatas recently received a grant from the Highland Education Foundation (HEF) to provide students with “Mind Benders.” She was able to bring 10 strategy games such as Blue Orange, Dr. Ureka and Rubik’s Cubes into the classroom. “These are games that challenge the students,” said Paplomatas. “It requires them to become creative and innovative.” These games have helped facilitate more effective use of “Brain Breaks,” which are a chance for students to get away from academics and refresh their minds. Since starting these breaks, Paplomatas has seen her students’ productivity increase as well as their interest. “The idea behind Brain Breaks is great,” Paplomatas said. “They need to be well planned in order to help a child grow.”
Condos/Townhomes/ Duplexes For Rent
HEF just completed its first round of awarding grants to educators in Highland. Paplomatas is very appreciative of the foundation and believes it has been well received by the schools. “These resources have allowed students to get out of their comfort zones to fail because the games allow them to make mistakes,” explained Paplomatas. “And by reevaluating their mistakes, the children can learn from them and grow.” Paplomatas has taught in Highland for 18 years. She is also a Highland native and credits her success to the value of education instilled at an early age by her family. Paplomatas and her husband opened a learning center, Education Station, that provides tutoring services to students of the region. “My family laid the foundation of ‘education first,’” said Paplomatas “The teachers cared so much, which helped me and my family embrace Highland as our community.”

The Haircut ARLO KALLEMEYN A young man had just gotten his driving permit. He asked his father, who was a minister, if they could discuss his use of the car. His father said to him, “I’ll make a deal with you. You bring your grades up, study your bible a little, and get your hair cut, then we will talk about it.” A month later the young man came back and again asked his father if they could discuss his use of the car. His father said, “Son, I’m real proud of you. You have brought your grades up, you’ve studied your bible diligently, but you didn’t get a haircut!” The young man waited a moment and replied, “You know dad, I’ve been thinking about that. You know Samson had long hair, Moses had long hair, Noah had long hair, and even Jesus had long hair.” His father replied, “Yes son, and they walked everywhere they went!” Sincerely, Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of teenagers walking once in a while

costs and ability to qualify for coverage later in life. Five years before retirement: Re-evaluate your investment mix to help reduce the risk of having your portfolio vulnerable to a market downturn when you plan to retire. You may want to consider shifting some— but certainly not all—of your investment dollars from the “growth” portion of your portfolio to the “income” side. Two years before retirement: This close to retirement, you’ll want to pay particularly close attention to health-care expenses, so you may want to investigate Medicare supplemental policies. You’ll also want to ensure that you have an adequate emergency fund to cope with unexpected costs, such as major home repairs. In addition, you’ll want to think about whether you should take Social Security right away or if you can afford to wait until your monthly checks will be bigger. One year before retirement: Now it’s time for some key decisions: How much can you withdraw each year from your retirement accounts without running the risk of outliving your money? Have you lined up your health care coverage? And, finally, are you really set on retiring in a year or could you delay retirement to improve your financial picture? This checklist isn’t exhaustive—but it can give you a good idea of the various issues you’ll need to consider on the long road to retirement. And the sooner you start planning for that journey, the better. BOB KRYGSHELD Like everyone, you want to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle when you retire. But a successful retirement doesn’t just happen—it requires a lot of planning. And that’s why it’s a good idea to draw up a “preretiree checklist.” Such a checklist might look like this: Twenty years before retirement: Try to estimate a “price tag” for your retirement, incorporating a variety of factors—where you might live, how much you might travel, what activities you’ll pursue, and so on. Then, assess if your retirement savings are on track to help you meet your expected costs. From this point, monitor your progress every year. Fifteen years before retirement: Although you’re still fairly far away from retirement, you’ll want to bring your goals and challenges into a clearer focus. For starters, try to establish a firmer target goal for the assets you’ll need during retirement. Also, consider your legacy goals and start developing your estate plans, if you haven’t already done so. You might also explore methods of dealing with potentially enormous long-term care costs. Solutions to longterm care may become much more expensive later in life. Ten years before retirement: At this stage, in addition to reviewing your target asset and spending levels, you’ll want to get more precise about how much income you can expect as a retiree, whether through your investments or retirement accounts or through some type of part-time work. You could spend two or three decades as a retiree, and some of your expenses —health care in particular —will likely rise during the later years. It’s important to plan for health care and long-term care, given the

UNITY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY
For the 16th consecutive year, Meals on Wheels is bringing fine dining to northwest Indiana with its annual fundraiser Dine with the Chefs Gala. On March 4, chefs from all around the region will come together and prepare a luxury five-course-meal for the community and its sponsors at Avalon Manor in Merrillville. The donations from the event will assist in the cost of the meals for the clients of MOW in the region. Jodi Bella, development manager at MOW, is coordinating this event for the fifth time. Bella emphasized the uniqueness of the food and the bond that is developed between the guests and Meals on Wheels at the gala. “This event is important because it showcases the incredible culinary talent we have in the region,” said Bella. “These chefs show us their talent and their pride for the region in working as a team to produce the most astonishing six course meal.” MOW invites different chefs from various locations to feature their meals. Some chefs are lucky enough to be invited multiple times. Christopher Adams, sous chef at The Farmhouse Restaurant at Fair Oaks Farms, is anticipating his second time as a featured chef at this year’s event. Adams and his team are providing two featured dishes for this event. He said he is particularly interested in the technique of creating the dishes and the ingredients sourced from Fair Oaks, which makes them unique.
In the kitchen, Adams said the event is a great way to foster comradery between staff. He said the experience to work with multiple chefs in one kitchen is rewarding. “Food tends to connect people,” said Adams. “You get outside of the bubble of your kitchen, and work with people you’ve known for 20 years. Chefs love working with chefs.” Adams said he is looking forward to seeing the final plated dishes. When he first participated in the event, he was primarily on the floor serving hors d’oeuvres. “It was nice talking to guests about the food and their expectations,” said Adams. “As a manager you don’t really get that interaction. It’s definitely nice to see the younger kids getting to experience higher-end food, too.” Bella said planning an event of this magnitude requires hours of planning, recruiting, making phone calls, and knocking on doors. She said every detail is executed with precision and love by the committee that plans the event. “There’s a lot of blood sweat and tears,” said Bella. “No one person could organize an event of this size. We are fortunate to have the group of volunteers who believe in our mission and make the event go off without a hitch.” Tickets to the Dine with the Chefs Gala are available for purchase at www.mownwi.org. The Northwest Indiana Cancer Kids Foundation will host the 7th annual St. Baldrick’s Event at the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 on Sunday, March 11 from noon to 4 p.m. The NICK Foundation’s goal is to raise $50,000 this year. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation uses the proceeds to provide funds for pediatric cancer research grants. “The event is an opportunity to raise public awareness about the gap in funding for childhood cancer research,” said Burns Harbor Town Councilman Kevin Tracy. “There are a lot of people making donations of what they can afford and it’s resulting in cures for childhood cancers that were once untreatable.” Tracy’s team will be one of the many teams participating in the contest. The team that raises the most money will win four level-one Blackhawks tickets. “We’ve got a long way to go, but I’ll keep getting my head shaved for as long as it takes to eradicate childhood cancer,” said Tracy. Volunteers and local businesses are donating their time and services toward the
cause. Tricoci Beauty School will be doing princess up-do’s and Texture Pointe Salon stylists will be volunteering for their seventh consecutive year. Rosati’s Chicago Pizza and Corky’s Dog House are providing the food for the event. A magic show, face painting booths, games, an auction, and balloon art will all be available throughout the day. Costumers with a Cause will have volunteers dressed up as Captain America, Maui, and other Disney characters. “Last year I was Elmo, and this year I get to be Queen Elsa from Frozen,” said Amanda Knight, a NICK Foundation volunteer. “I volunteer because I love meeting families, making kids smile, and sharing my own battle with cancer, but the biggest reason is because the NICK Foundation has given something to me and I want to give something to them in return.” Visit /www.stbaldricks.org/events/ NICK7thannualevent to volunteer, donate or join a team. The NICK Foundation is nonprofit pediatric cancer organization founded in 2009.

Indiana AP Exams Offered, Taken, and Passed Increases Again of post-secondary experiences. I congratulate and thank the teachers and administrators whose work has made this possible.” AP is a research-based method to facilitate student participation and success through delivery of collegelevel courses and corresponding exams in the high school setting, to qualified high school students. Research suggests students who perform well in AP courses are predicted to not only outperform their peers, but have greater college success. For the 2016-2017 school year, Indiana reported the following increases: • For the 2017 graduating class, 24,671 Indiana public school students took an AP exam, compared to 24,141 in the class of 2016—up 530 students. • Since 2007, the percentage of graduates
In partnership with the College Board and the Indiana Commission for Higher Education (ICHE), the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) announced today another year of increases in the number of Advanced Placement (AP) exams offered, as well as the number of students taking and passing AP exams. “Preparing students for future workforce success has always been a priority for Indiana’s education K-12 system,” said Dr. Jennifer McCormick, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction. “With the increase in the number of schools offering AP exams, and the number of students making AP courses their class of choice, Indiana is once again paving a way for students who are better prepared for the rigors
taking an AP exam during high school increased from 18.9 percent to 38.9 percent for an increase of 21%. • In the past 10 years, the number of Indiana public school students scoring 3 or better on at least one AP exam more than doubled, from 5,786 to 12,546. “In increasing numbers, Hoosier students are graduating high school with college credit,” said Indiana Commissioner for Higher Education, Teresa Lubbers, “and we know students who take rigorous high school courses are more likely to go to college and graduate.” For more information regarding IDOE efforts to expand AP in Indiana schools, and AP related data, please visit: http:// www.doe.in.gov/ap.

Speaking Of Seniors
Seniors Pay More at Mayo Clinic WOODROW WILCOX On December 18, 2017, two clients visited me in the morning and both of them had billing problems with Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. In the process of helping them, I learned that Mayo Clinic DOES NOT ACCEPT ASSIGNMENT OF CLAIMS with Medicare. For that reason, a senior citizen will pay more for going to Mayo Clinic than going to a medical firm that does accept assignment. Not only will going to Mayo Clinic cost a senior more, the senior (or the ones helping the senior) will be hassled with extra paperwork. Because Mayo Clinic does not accept Medicare assignment, both Medicare and the Medicare supplement insurance company must send payment checks to the senior citizen patient instead of to Mayo Clinic directly. The senior will need to deposit the checks and write a check directly to
P.O. BOX 133, Lansing IL 60438 (708) 802-2345
2018 BASEBALL/SOFTBALL/VOLLEYBALL REGISTRATION
Mayo Clinic to pay the bills. Also, the senior citizen patient will have to pay up to 15% more for Mayo Clinic services than what would be covered if Mayo Clinic accepted assignment. The same problem would happen with any medical service provider who does not accept Medicare assignment. So, be sure to ask a doctor, hospital, or other service if it does accept Medicare assignment BEFORE YOU GET SERVICES THERE. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has helped clients of that agency save over one million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www. SolvingMedicareProblems. com) and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox.com Home Repair & Improvements. Rev. Pastor Archie Graham expired last year but he is still fondly remembered by this reporter as a friend and colleague. At one point Rev. Graham was a Director with the Calumet City Chamber of Commerce and due to his experience in Law Enforcement, a security adviser for many businesses in the south suburbs. Our thoughts and prayers are with Rev. Elaine Graham, Rev. Archie’s widow, and his family and the entire God’s Word Christian Center Family. Special Thanks to Elder Andrea Evans for the update. May Reverend Pastor Archie Graham Rest in Peace! *** U N I T ED WAY OF MET RO CHIC AGO, CHICAGO SOUTHLAND C&VB, SOUTHSOUTHWEST SUBURBS TO HOST ‘APRIL FOOD DAY.’ Businesses and organizations in the south and southwest suburbs are being encouraged to participate in the food collection and giveaway (March 25 - April 25 2018) culminating in an awards luncheon (April 25th 2018 at Tinley Park Convention Center) and food pick-up from local pantries. In the south-southwest areas, food insecurity impacts thousands of people in the community. Last year United Way collected more than 109,000 pounds of food which supports food pantries throughout the S/SW areas. Non-perishables such as 100% fruit and vegetable juices, canned fruits and vegetables, cereal, canned meats and stews, PB and J, infant supplies, laundry supplies and toiletries are truly needed in the local food pantries. As individuals or groups, our help is needed. TO CLOSE: The Highland eatery, located on Old Highway Avenue in Highland, closed its doors this past New Year’s of a hugely popu la r restaura nt her Fat her George started 1963 in East Chicago, Indiana. Along the way Mom Katherine, sister Carol and Helen worked the restaurant as it moved from Indiana to Calumet City and back to Indiana. “I just got tired of being tired all the time,” Helen told me as we stood in the still outfitted restaurant the other day. “Even when I cut my hours back I was still going in 2 hours early and staying 2 hours after closing. I looked at my family. Mom, Dad, Carol, all passed away. I wanted to be able to do things with the rest of my life, to travel, and the only way I could do that was to sell the restaurant.” The 6,000 Square Foot restaurant is for sale for $349,000 with all the equipment still in place. There is a parking lot in back that also goes with. Helen entertained a couple of offers “but, they were so low they were insulting” Helen explained. “Ideally, if someone bought the restaurant and re-opened it as Lincoln’s, and offered the same menu, pies and so on-the public would be pleased and I would be pleased,” she added. There are some nibbles, but for now, in all its pink and white glory, Lincoln’s Tasty Sandwiches is just waiting to be reborn! “That is my ‘pie in the sky hope’” she deadpanned! Great seeing you Helen! Enjoy your retirement! ***

FRED AND CAROLANN SCHRUM TAKE IN A HOLIDAY PA RT Y: Ca rola n n is a brave girl who is fighting the good fight against a debilitating illness. Despite her uncomfortable treatments, she attends social events with her beloved hubby Fred and contributes greatly to the festivities. They are pictured here at the Calumet City Historical Society Post Holiday event that is sells out every year, thanks to the master marketing of President Mike Wolski. Get Well Soon Carolann! Prayers and Best Wishes coming your way! *** FEBRUARY 28, 2018, LAST DAY OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH—LET’S REMEMBER: The efforts of all who fought for the civil rights of all Americans have been told in print, electronic and on air for the past month. It would behoove us not to let those splendid efforts pass by just because the month of February is followed by March. From the earliest civil rights advocates, t h roug h to t he beloved Rev. Ma r t i n Luther King Jr, on to the present civ il rights champions, we can never forget the sacrifices made on behalf of freedom, justice and equality for all who live in this great land! Peace and Love Forever.

Students Urged to Enter 2018 Congressional Art Competition High school students nationwide are being encouraged to submit their artwork for the 2018 Congressional Art Competition. Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC. The deadline for entries is Tuesday, May 1, 2018. Official rules, guidelines, and
submission forms are available via your U.S. representative’s website. The winning piece will be hung in the United States Capitol building for one year, along with artworks from across the country. The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982, and since that time more than 650,000 young artists have participated. “This is a great opportunity for students in the First District to showcase their enormous talent, says U.S. Representative Bobby L. Rush (D-Ill.). “I am excited to see the wonderful pieces of art and I encourage all young artists from around my district to submit their work for consideration. Competition information is available at Rep. Rush’s website at https://rush.house.gov/ services/art-competition.
