Oak Glen Elementary School Hoops for Heart Event Promoted Healthy Habits
Oak Glen 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders were invited to participate in the American Heart Association fundraiser at Oak Glen Elementary School. The Hoops for Heart event was held on Friday, February 23, 2018. The goals are for students to understand the importance of developing heart-healthy habits, learning that being physically active can be fun, and raising funds to support cardiovascular research and education to help save lives across the country. Oak Glen is proud to have such an awesome event and make the community aware of the positive things that our students are doing to help make the world a healthier place!
We had 3 South Suburban College Basketball (S.S.C.) players attend our event. They were freshman Antonio Reed from Memphis, TN. Sophomore Dom Jacovic from Croatia, and sophomore Lawrence Lemon from Joliet, IL. The head coach from the S.S.C. basketball team, John Pigatti, was also able to join us. There were 42 kids participating in this fundraiser and raised a total of $547.00 for the American Heart Association. We are very proud of our students at Oak Glen! If you have any questions about this event feel free to call Mrs. Barbaro at Oak Glen (708) 474-1714.

Financial Advice Column
How Can Women Make Financial Progress? BOB KRYGSHELD On March 8, we observe International Women’s Day. This year’s theme is “Press for Progress,” and events around the world will celebrate women’s advancements in the political, social and cultural arenas. But right here in the United States, women still face barriers to their financial progress. If you’re a woman, you need to recognize these challenges—and respond to them. So, what are the key obstacles to financial security for a woman? Probably the first thing that comes to mind is the gender wage gap: Women generally earn around 80 cents for every dollar men earn, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. But women also face other threats to their financial security. For one thing, they are far more likely than men to take time away from the workforce to raise a family —and time away means smaller Social Security payments and significantly lower balances in 401(k) plans and other retirement accounts. And women’s roles as caretakers don’t end when their children are grown—in fact, women are twice as likely as their male siblings to end up caring for an elderly parent, according to a Princeton University study. What, then, can you do to help ensure a comfortable retirement and achieve your other financial goals? Here are a few suggestions: • Take full advantage of your employer’s retirement plan. If your employer offers a 401(k) or similar retirement plan, take full advantage of it. Invest as much as you can afford each year, and every time you get a raise, increase your contributions. At the very least, put in enough to earn your employer’s
matching contribution, if one is offered. • Invest for the long term. Some evidence shows that women may be more conservative investors than men. But if you want to reach your long-term goals, you will need to consider some growth-oriented investments in your portfolio, factoring in your risk tolerance and time horizon. You may want to consult with a financial professional about the best way to invest for the long term. • Maximize your Social Security. If your spouse is the higher earner, you may want to consider how you can use this disparity to your advantage when you collect Social Security. Specifically, you may be eligible for Social Security benefits based on your spouse’s earnings and Social Security record. You’ll want to consult your tax advisor before making any moves. • Protect yourself from long-term care costs. More than two-thirds of nursing home residents are women. And the median rate nationwide for a private room in a nursing home is over $97,000 per year, according to the Genworth 2017 Cost of Care Survey. Medicare generally pays very little for long-term care, so if you ever need these services, you’ll have to find other ways to pay for them. A financial professional can suggest some ideas. As a woman, you face special financial challenges, and striving to overcome them will be a lifelong activity. But it’s worth the effort. Meaning to be expelled from a group, the metaphor goes back to the 1700s. It was once the practice to dismiss a disgraced officer from the military to the beating of a drum. He was literally “drummed out of the service.”

Thornton Township High School District 205 Selects New Superintendent Thornton Township High School District 205 includes Thornwood High School in South Holland, Thornridge High School in Dolton, and Thornton High School in Harvey, IL. District 205 Board of Education is pleased to announce the hiring of Dr. Nathaniel Cunningham to serve as its next Superintendent. Dr. Cunningham will replace Dr. Leotis Swopes who notified the Board of Education of his retirement at the end of his current contract on June 30, 2018. Dr. Cunningham will assume his responsibilities on July 1, 2018. The Board of Education’s hiring decision is the culmination of a national search which produced a wide range of applicants interested in the open position. The Board of Education was intentional in gathering input from both community and academic stakeholders during this process, and was impressed with both the past experience and future vision of Dr. Cunningham. Dr. Cunningham comes to our school district having previously served as Superintendent of Crete-Monee School District 201U, a school of similar size, means and demographics as District 205. Prior to becoming a superintendent, Dr. Cunningham served for five years as Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources for McLean County Unit 5 Schools (serving approximately 13,000 students) and has 10 years of principal and associate principal experience at two other downstate schools. He first began his public education career in Danville, Illinois as a junior high teacher for six years. Prior to entering public education, Dr. Cunningham was a civil engineering project manager for the United States Air Force Academy for more than 10 years. He was bestowed with a doctorate of philosophy (Ph.D) from Illinois State University in 2016. Together with the faculty and community, the Board of Education welcomes Dr. Cunningham. We look forward to his leadership in bringing the very best education to the students of District 205.

On February 23rd, Lieutenant Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti, Deputy Governor Leslie Munger and officials from the Illinois Math and Science Academy announced the launch of the Illinois Bicentennial STEM Fusion campaign. The three-year program will be offered to students at 25 elementary and middle schools in underserved communities across Illinois. Schools can submit applications at http://bit.ly/FusionBicentennial. The renowned IMSA Fusion program presents a unique curriculum for middle school teachers to inspire 4th through 8th graders to study math and science and pursue careers in technology, medicine, education and business. IMSA Fusion places a special emphasis on students who are historically underrepresented in those areas. Abbott and Wintrust are the presenting sponsors of the Bicentennial STEM Fusion campaign. funding is provided by Boeing, Ingredion and Motorola. All Bicentennial Office programs are privately financed. A STEM Fusion school committee will award the program to 25 schools, each receiving a three-year teacher training program. A four-person school selection committee will review the applications. The committee includes: Emily Bastedo, Special Adviser to the Governor, Office of the Secretary of Education; Kevin Pitts, Vice President of Undergraduate Education, University of Illinois; Ross Hemphill, Board Member, IMSA Fund for Advancement of Education; and Jenna Daugherty, Divisional Vice President of Global Social Responsibility, Abbott. The schools will be chosen based on serving populations predominately under-represented in the STEM fields, commitment to embedding IMSA Fusion into the regular school day as an elective/encore/CTE course, requiring teachers to undertake five full days

of professional development, and a sustainability plan to continue the IMSA Fusion program after the three-year award expires. The Illinois Bicentennial marks the 200th anniversary of Illinois statehood; it is a yearlong celebration of what has been BORN, BUILT AND GROWN in the state, and a reminder of why we are #IllinoisProud. “The Bicentennial is a commemoration of 200 years of people, places and events,” said Deputy Governor Munger, “and it is about investing in the next 200 years.” Citizens are encouraged to participate in the celebration by visiting www.illinois200.com and using the hashtag #IllinoisProud. Partners and event and project managers planning activities until Dec. 3, 2018, can apply for endorsement to become an official part of the Illinois Bicentennial by visiting the PARTICIPATE page at www. illinois200.com.

IDOR Offers Several Options to Pay State Taxes Owed The Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) urges individuals who may owe taxes to explore all available options to avoid costly penalties. With this year’s tax filing deadline of April 17 quickly approaching, it is important for taxpayers to know the various ways they can make payment on state taxes. File by the deadline – Even if the taxes owed cannot be paid at the time of filing, it is important to file on time to avoid late penalties. You’ll then receive a tax bill via mail at a later date. Once a bill is received, the customer can set up a payment plan online or by calling DOR’s Payment Services at 317-2322165, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., EST. Send a partial payment with the tax filing – By sending a payment for as much as possible with the tax filing, the total amount owed and any interest due on the unpaid amount will be reduced. Set up a payment plan – If an individual owes $100 or more, they may qualify for a payment plan. Visit www.intaxpay. in.gov to set up a payment plan. File for an extension – If an individual is not sure a tax filing can be completed on time, they may qualify for an extension. Visit http://www.in.gov/dor/4736.htm for more information. Pay the tax bill online – If you’ve just waited until the last second, individuals and businesses can quickly and securely pay taxes owed online at www.dorpay.dor.in.gov. For additional information regarding state tax billing and payments, customers can use DOR’s automated information line at 317-233-4018. Before calling, customers need to have their tax identification or Social Security number along with the liability number or warrant number ready.

ARLO KALLEMEYN We visited the Planetarium a while back and viewed a display that described the importance of three AfricanAmerican women that played a key role in the space race between the US and Russia in the early 60’s. Few people knew about these three women until a movie named Hidden Figures told their story. Back in 1960, NASA was run by engineers who had two things in common—they were white men with engineering degrees. Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan were hired due to their expertise in mathematics, geometry and calculus, however they were relegated to the back rooms of the Langley Research center in Hampton, Virginia. When Russia was successful in launching a space capsule that orbited the earth, the heat was on NASA to catch up—and fast. Katherine was reassigned to assist the Space Task Group of Al Harrison due to her skills in analytic geometry. She becomes the first African-American woman in the team—and in the building. NASA needed to compute the reentry angles so our astronauts could return to earth safely. Harrison invites his subordinates to solve a complex mathematical equation, and Katherine steps forward, earning the respect of the entire team of engineers. There are many more stories in the movie of the obstacles and prejudices that these three women experienced. They overcame this prejudice, and were an integral part of the success of the early space program. On February 20, 1962, John Glenn flew the Friendship 7 mission; the first American to orbit the Earth, he was the fifth person in space thanks to the contributions of Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan. The movie’s epilogue reveals that Katherine calculated the trajectories for the Friendship space capsules as well as the Apollo 11 and Apollo 13 missions. In 2015 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The following year a new 40,000-square-foot Computational Research Facility at the Langley Research Center was renamed the Katherine G. Johnson Computational Research Facility in her honor. If you haven’t seen the movie Hidden Figures yet, I highly recommend it. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of untold stories

5 Safety Tips for An Adventure Road Trip With spring not far away, an annual fever will soon grip many Americans as the spirit of adventure leads many to embark on a road trip—a timeless American pastime where families head out to discover new places or re-visit familiar ones. According to MMGY Global’s 2017 Portrait of American Travelers, road trip vacations rose from 22 percent to 39 percent from 2016 to 2017. “No matter how fast technology advances, a road trip is just the right speed for many, slowing things down to be enjoyed and remembered,” says Gary Sandberg, a prepper who instructs church groups and community groups on adventure planning and emergency preparedness. “But sometimes good intentions run into unfortunate snags, and the stories are endless of people who weren’t prepared adequately for the worst-case scenario. Taking the time to pack a few simple items for the road is definitely worth it.” Sandberg gives five safety tips for your next road trip: Take a map. Really. Having a smartphone with GPS is great, but what if you lose cell service? Then you’ll need a good, oldfashioned paper map to know how to get where you’re going. Pack for a roadside emergency. It’s important to be prepared for getting a flat tire, or your car breaking down— perhaps for an extended period. Essentials include water, snacks, jumper cables, screwdriver, tire jack, tire iron and spare tire. Take a blanket; even hot places can get cold at night. Have a light source. People often don’t think of a flashlight until they need one. Even if they keep one in the car, the batteries may be dead, so bring fresh batteries. Or have a flashlight that runs on an alternative energy source, such as Hydralight, with a fuel cell that’s powered by water. The device can also be converted into a lantern. Enable child safety locks. If you’re traveling with youngsters who are naturally curious and like to use their hands to open things that they shouldn’t, make sure to activate all of the child safety locks in your vehicle. Share the driving. Long road trips can lead to drowsy or distracted driving if one person does all the driving. To avoid this danger, share the driving duties with another responsible driver and give each other a break from time to time. “There’s nothing more enjoyable than a family road trip,” Sandberg says, but “it’s more than just safe driving.” Be prepared, and you can hit the road with peace of mind.

Agent or No Agent MIKE BUDER Some buyers and sellers wonder whether they can save money by not using a Realtor for their home sale and/or purchase. I will do my best to explain the variables for different types of transactions. SELLING A HOME. You will probably be best served to hire a Realtor to list it for you and to represent your interests throughout the transaction. This is known as a “fiduciary responsibility,” and Realtors must abide by a code of ethics—which means we are working for you alone, not our own interests or those of the buyer. Realtors must treat everyone fairly, but for negotiations it is very helpful to be represented by a professional. This also applies to exposure for your home. More than 80% of homes sell in the MLS. It will behoove you to have a fullservice agent who can help with pricing, photography, staging, marketing, negotiations, inspections (which sometimes lead to additional negotiations), and the closing process itself. If you try to go it alone, the statistics show that “For Sale by Owner” homes eventually end up listing with a realtor around 85% of the time. Buying a RESALE HOME, you could go directly to the listing agent in an attempt to get them to discount services because you have no agent

helping you. They however are under no obligation to give you any of their commission. Additionally, since the listing agent is representing the seller, they are on the other team and working against you with regard to the sale price and repair negotiations, so it could end up costing you more. BUYING NEW CONSTRUCTION. Builder pricing normally includes agent commissions. Reputable builders will not discount or undercut Realtors because they bring them a lion’s share of their business. So the bottom line is that although it is possible, you probably won’t save money if you choose not to hire an agent. This is beside the additional time spent and stress involved. You would not go into court without a lawyer or do your own surgery without a doctor… allow a professional to handle your real estate needs. Realtors do this stuff every day! If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/ MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@ remax.net, Website: w w w. B u d e r H o m e s . com. Jesse Howard Art Exhibition at SSC
The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Jesse Howard. The exhibition will be on display in the Dorothea Thiel Gallery March 9 – April 16 with an artist reception on March 20 at 1:00 in the Thiel Gallery, room 4333. Since the 1980’s, Jesse Howard’s sociallyconcerned drawings have focused on the plight of the homeless and the disenfranchised, particularly African Americans in urban environments. Informed by his own unsettling upbringing on Chicago’s West side and his lived experience as a black man, Howard is sensitive to the way these populations are viewed, treated and often dismissed. As the artist explains, “At times, [a black man] is a prisoner within himself and/or the neighborhood he’s trapped in, usually because of his race or circumstances; one could argue that he was dead before birth.” Produced in charcoal, watercolor and collage, his figures are typically distorted, reflecting the pressure and anxiety the individuals feel inside as well as the perceptions and expectations imposed upon them by society. In addition, the physical presence of urban life is often evident through bits of newspaper, receipts or various other scraps affixed to the surface of the portraits. The public is welcome to visit art exhibitions and receptions at no charge. The Dorothea Thiel Gallery is located on the fourth floor and is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays. The galleries are supported in part by the SSC Foundation. SSC is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois. Contact (708) 596-2000 ext. 2316.

John Kasperek Co., Inc., a Certified Public Accounting (CPA) firm in Calumet City, Illinois, announces Stephanie Blanco, CPA, as partner. Blanco (41, Crown Point, IN) becomes only the second partner named in company history, joining managing partner and company founder John Kasperek, Jr. “It is a great day for our entire firm to announce Stephanie as a partner,” said Kasperek. “Stephanie has been with us for 20 years—her knowledge and technical skills are unparalleled. She is a true expert in all areas of auditing and accounting, and she is an even better person.” Blanco is John Kasperek Co., Inc.’s longest tenured employee with extensive experience in governmental, educational and nonprofit work. She has provided oversight for all staff in the auditing and consulting functions of the firm. Blanco’s responsibilities have included quality control and staff training. She has also been responsible for ensuring that the accounting reporting systems and procedures are compliant with federal and state laws, and coordinates the firm’s peer review process. Blanco was recently re-elected chairperson of Government Report Review Committee (GRRC) by her peers at the Illinois CPA Society (ICPAS) for a second term. A licensed CPA, Stephanie earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Davenport University. Blanco’s partnership announcement comes on the heels of the firm’s addition of Timothy J. Gavin, CPA, as Senior Manager on Feb. 12th. Gavin will primarily be responsible for the firm’s governmental audits, including municipalities, villages, park districts, school districts, and other special districts. He brings 12 years of experience leading staff and performing audits, accounting services, financial reporting, agreed-upon procedures, and other consulting engagements for a wide range of clients in the Chicagoland area. Kasperek stated that recent additions and changes are critical milestones in John Kasperek Co., Inc.’s strategic plans for growth and will be well received by the firm’s extensive governmental client base.

C A L U M E T C I T Y C H A M B E R HO S T S FEBRUARY MEETING: Guest speaker was Calumet City Community Development Director Pete Sanders during the Wednesday Februar y 28th, 2018 luncheon meeting held at the Calumet City Public Library. Sanders was enthusiastic about some of the new businesses coming to Calumet City, such as the Furniture and Rug outlet moving from Lansing, and updates for some of the existing and successful businesses such as Sonic, H.B. Taylor, a nd Bob’s Furniture. Some of Sanders’ time has been spent identifying the vacant land which is available, and the development of TIF districts within the city as well. Calumet City Mayor Michelle Markiewicz Qualkinbush noted that the city recently purchased the old Target property in River Oaks West for $1. “We are just trying to decide what to do with it. We are open for suggestions,” the Mayor noted at the meeting. There are many small parcels available for TIF development, such as Sibley Boulevard from I-94 to Torrence, which are “less than contemporary,” Sanders noted. City officials are also looking at River Oaks I and II in terms of redevelopment and enhancement of what is a lready there. A nother new development is the hiring of a grant writer to seek funds with which to accomplish the redevelopment of parts of Calumet City. Residents and visitors to Calumet City can notice the improvements along Burnham Avenue from the Burnham Bridge, where the old Linz’ meats and adjacent commercial buildings were recently torn down. There are many houses which have already come down as well. A comprehensive website is in production now that will outline many of the exciting plans the city has for the near and not-so-near future. Also pictured here are Chamber President Jane Rowland and Director Chris Martin with Pete Sanders and Mayor Michelle with 2nd Ward Ald. Leni Woczynski, Bruce Clemans of River Oaks Towne Homes and William Murray of Calumet City Human Resources.
