John LeGear, journalist, photographer, video editor, builder and promoter, presents “U.S. History & Today,” a rollercoaster ride of news events of the last 100 years.

_______________________________

A three-hour seminar touring through Illinois community colleges that recounts the past 100 years of American history in news photos and Hollywood film clips will be presented by the Continuing Education department of South Suburban College at its Oak Forest campus March 24, and at the main campus in South Holland March 27. Everyone is invited to register to attend. “U.S. History and Today,” is a fast-paced, visually-rich presentation that features 600 historic photographs and 44 popular film and music clips highlighting American life between 1914 and present day. Topics range from both World Wars and The Great Depression to Vietnam, the turbulent 1960s, and surprising presidential elections. Entertainment highlights include Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Elvis Presley, Emma Stone, scenes from “Back to the Future, “The Andy Griffith Show” and more. “It’s a century of American history at high speed,” said one attendee, who applauded the mix of hard-hitting, factbased history and pop culture. Reviews from showings at five Illinois community colleges to date have been enthusiastic. The show is presented by John LeGear, a builder and promoter of national not-for-profit organizations who turned his attention to American history late in his career. He employs

skills acquired as a journalist, photographer, video editor and public speaker to assemble the presentation. LeGear created the show to lend balance and historical perspective to today’s rollercoaster ride of news events. The seminar is suitable for audiences of high school age and over. Senior citizens have been especially supportive of the show, often describing it as “a walk down memory lane.” “U.S. History and Today” is a visually-rich three-hour show that is touring through 15 Illinois community colleges this year. A registration fee of $10 is required. The seminar will be held at SSC’s Oak Forest Center, 16333 S. Kilbourn Ave., on Saturday, March 24 from 9 am to noon. An evening presentation starting at 6 pm is scheduled on March 27 in Room 3339 at SSC’s main campus building, 15800 S. State Street, South Holland. SSC’s Continuing Education members can enroll online. In-person registration is welcomed at both facilities from 8 am to 6:45 pm Monday through Thursday, and until 3:45 pm on Friday. For more information, call the Oak Forest Center at 708-225-6000 or SSC’s Deborah Ravazee at 708-596-2000 (ext. 2231). For information about all of South Suburban College’s programs, admissions and registration, please contact the Admissions Office at (708) 210-5718 or visit www.ssc.edu.

Question: What do I do if my dog bites someone? page 3 Answer: It’s a timely question. The insurance industry reports that insurer’s costs tied to dog bites surged last year, with the average claim jumping 12 percent or more on medical fees, legal settlements and jury awards. Most homeowner’s and renter’s insurance policies usually have a dog liability clause as part of their standard coverage, but that may not be enough to cover damages and liability in a civil suit. If your dog bites someone and you find yourself on the receiving end of a dog bite claim, report the incident to your insurance company, but realize you may also need to hire an attorney to defend you.

Question: How can I find out if my legal problem is serious enough to warrant the services of a lawyer? Answer: It’s easy. The Illinois Lawyer Finder Service (www. illinoislawyerfinder.com), operated by the Illinois State Bar Association, offers consumers a referral to a qualifying lawyer. You can search the online directory free of charge by entering the field of practice, county and zip code. Anonymous There was a young woman who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and had been given three months to live. So, as she was getting her things “in order,’ she contacted her Pastor and had him come to her house to discuss certain aspects of her final wishes. She told him which songs she wanted sung at the service, what scriptures she would like read, and what outfit she wanted to be buried in. Everything was in order and the Pastor was preparing to leave when the young woman suddenly remembered something very important to her. “There’s one more thing,” she said excitedly. “What’s that?” the Pastor’s replied. “This is very important,” the young woman continued. “I want to be buried with a fork in my right hand.” The Pastor stood looking at the young woman, not knowing quite what to say. “That surprises you, doesn’t it?” the young woman asked. “Well, to be honest, I’m puzzled by the request,” said the Pastor. The young woman explained. “My grandmother once told me this story, and from that time on I have always tried to pass along its message to those I love and those in need of encouragement. In all my years of attending socials and dinners, I always remember that when the dishes of the main course were being cleared, someone would inevitably lean over and say, ‘Keep your fork.’ It was my favorite part because I knew that something better was coming...like velvety chocolate cake or deep-dish apple pie—something wonderful! “So, I just want people to see me there in that casket with a fork in my hand and I want them to wonder ‘What’s with the fork?’ Then I want you to tell them: ‘Keep your fork...the best is yet to come.’” The Pastor knew this would be one of the last times he would see her before her death. But he also knew that the young woman had a better grasp of heaven than he did. In fact, she had a better grasp of what heaven would be like than many people twice her age, with twice as much experience and knowledge. She KNEW that something better was coming. At the funeral people were walking by the young woman’s casket and they saw the cloak she was wearing and the fork placed in her right hand. Over and over, the Pastor heard the question, “What’s with the fork?” And over and over he smiled. During his message, the Pastor told the people of the conversation he had with the young woman shortly before she died. He also told them about the fork and about what it symbolized to her. He told the people how he could not stop thinking about the fork and told them that they probably would not be able to stop thinking about it either. He was right. So, the next time you reach down for your fork let it remind you that the best is yet to come. Show your friends and family how much you care. You never know when it may be your time—or their time—to “Keep your fork.” Please visit the church of your choice on Sunday April 1st to celebrate Easter—and the reason we don’t have to fear saying goodbye for the final time. First meaning to take the honors, the term originated in the 1870s from a contest in the black community called a “cake walk.” Couples in their best finery would take turns strolling elegantly to win the prize—an elaborate cake. Today the phrase is used to indicate a surprise outcome: “Bob got a hole in one? Well, that takes the cake.”

MIKE BUDER TRUTH IN ADVERTISTING. It’s a simple concept, but in the real estate world it can get complicated. The temptation to embellish is sometimes irresistible to a home seller. This is a formula that will for sure frustrate buyers and alienate real estate agents that show your home. Recently, I was showing a home to a couple that has a large family. We had been on the hunt for a 4 bedroom home in their desired location for quite some time. When we walked into a home with a large enclosed sunroom with a closet, the husband said “I hope they aren’t counting this as the 4th bedroom!” and it hit me how many houses we’d seen that claimed to have 4 bedrooms and really did not. Here was a family that really needed 4 bedrooms —not 3 bedrooms and an office, not 3 bedrooms and an attic space you could build out, but 4 bedrooms. In terms of “creative advertising,” they’d seen it all, and not surprisingly were getting a little jaded. As a real estate agent, I’ve also seen it all. I’ve seen vacant lots classified as single-family homes— “Oh, you want a house with that?” Not to mention advertised features that did not even exist in a home. Buyers do not want to look at blueprints and unfiled permits. The

seller’s side of the equation I think is also very negative. Watching day after day, as buyers trot through your home and reject it, can be disheartening (and make you feel unnecessarily desperate). You’re going to start thinking that people hate your house—when in reality, they just hate that it doesn’t have a gourmet kitchen like you said it did. Ultimately, unless you suddenly decide to upgrade before selling, the buyer for your home will have to be okay with Formica countertops and vinyl floors. Trust me, people buy homes with Formica countertops and vinyl floors every day. The key is to attract buyers who want the attributes that your home actually has. By simply painting an accurate picture of your home in advertising, you will avoid frustrating buyers, alienating buyer’s agents, and wasting your own time. Financial Advice Column

Is a Managed Account Right for You? BOB KRYGSHELD portfolio’s success, this arrangement could work to your advantage. Be aware, though, that other fees may be associated with your account. • Control – With any managed account, you will give up some, or perhaps all, of your power to make buy-and-sell decisions. If you have built a large portfolio, and you’re busy with work and family, you may like the idea of delegating these decisions. You can still oversee the “big picture” by either working through a financial advisor or, at the least, having your goals, risk tolerance and investment preferences dictate a money manager’s decisions. But you will have to decide for yourself how comfortable you are in ceding control of your portfolio’s day-to-day transactions. • Confidence – It’s essential that you feel confident in a managed account’s ability to help you meet your goals. And the various elements of a managed account may well give you that assurance. For example, some managed accounts include automatic rebalancing of assets, which, among other things, can help you achieve tax efficiency. Other features of a managed account— such as the experience and track record of the manager—also may bolster your confidence. Ultimately, you’ll need to weigh all factors before deciding whether a managed account is right for you. In any case, it’s an option worth considering. As an investor, you’ll face many decisions over the years. How much should you invest? Where should you put your money? When is it time to sell some investments and use the proceeds to buy others? Some people enjoy making these choices themselves—but not everyone. Consequently, the type of investor you are will influence your thinking about whether to open a managed account. As its name suggests, a managed account— sometimes known as an “advisory” account— essentially is a portfolio of stocks, bonds and other investments chosen by a professional investment manager who makes the buy-and-sell decisions. Typically, each managed account has an investment objective based on your goals, and you may have some voice in investment choices. Beyond this basic structure, managed accounts can vary greatly in terms of administration, reporting, fees and minimum balance. So, assuming you meet the requirements for a managed account, should you consider one? There’s really no one right answer for everyone. But three factors to consider are cost, control and confidence. • Cost – Different managed accounts may have different payment arrangements. However, it’s common for a money manger to be paid based on a percentage of assets under management. So, if your manager’s fee is 1.5% and your portfolio contains $100,000, the manager earns $1,500 per year; if the value of your portfolio rises to $200,000, the manager earns $3,000. Because the manager has a personal stake in the

Valpo Client Got False Bill WOODROW WILCOX On February 23, 2018, I caught a medical service that sent a false bill to a client who lives in Valparaiso, Indiana. The bill was small. But, it really irritated me that the medical service had been paid months earlier but never credited our client’s account. No, this is not extremely rare. In my 15 years of helping seniors with medical bill problems, I’ve noticed that this happens a lot. Usually, it is not the fault of the doctor, hospital, or medical service except that someone at their offices made a contract with a less than accurate and unprofessional medical billing service. In this case, the client got medical services on August 31, 2017. His Medicare supplement insurance company paid the balance of the bill on September 29, 2017. But, on January 31, 2018, the medical billing firm sent a bill to the client that demanded he pay the balance right now! The bill was paid over four months before the payment demand letter was sent to our client. A few years ago, I helped about 50 of our clients fight a medical billing firm near

Indianapolis which was regularly cashing checks from insurance companies but not crediting the accounts of our senior citizen clients. I helped several of our clients file complaints with federal and state officials. Plus, I got the cooperation of the medical service firm in Lake County that used the bad billing firm. The honest doctor who led the medical firm made sure that all our wronged clients got a balance of zero on their bills. My question is this. Why doesn’t the federal government prosecute bad medical billing firms for sending false or fraudulent bills through the mail to senior citizens who use Medicare? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www. SolvingMedicareProblems. com) and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox. com.

Copies of her book will be available for purchase. To RSVP, call the Library’s Adult Services Department at (708) 862-6220 ext. 2. National School Walkout Day Represents Historical Moment

Thornwood students hold orange signs on the school’s football field to protest gun violence during National School Walkout Day, March 14, in remembrance of the 17 people slain at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. –––––––––––––––––––––––

Concerned Thornwood students listened attentively while student speakers addressed the issue of gun violence and its threat to school safety, as it impacts Thornwood students and their peers at other schools. More than 850 Thornwood students attended the walkout. –––––––––––––––––––––––

There was a slight chill in the morning air as more than 850 students quietly exited Thornwood High School’s rear doors to assemble in the football stadium. They were there to participate in National School Walkout Day, a movement to address the epidemic of mass shootings in schools. As they walked in unity, two students carried an orange banner saying, “Enough is enough.” Several Thornwood students stood quietly in the bleachers holding colorful banners bearing the names of slain victims—a sobering reminder that gun violence is real. In the wake of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, tens of thousands of students across the country have joined in a unified protest, demanding that politicians and lawmakers do more to put an end to the ongoing incidents of gun violence. During Thornwood’s walkout, Kevin Brown, a freshman, candidly reflected on the emotional impact of Walkout Day. “It’s a sad day today because 17 people lost their lives. They didn’t deserve to die; their lives were more important than violence. They (parents and lawmakers) should keep guns away from children and youth.” For 17 minutes—one minute for each victim of the Parkland shooting—several junior and senior students took to the mic to encourage classmates to take a stand. Students in the crowd clapped and cheered in agreement as speakers drove home

their points. Cheyenne Robinson, E’Monty Glover, and Nicolette Sales of the International Baccalaureate program were among the student speakers. “We shouldn’t have to wait until something big happens to make a change,” Sales said as she spoke from inside the football stadium announcer’s booth. “Start changing your attitude now, and maybe we can save a life later. Nothing gets better unless we want it to.” Cheyenne Robinson said, “None of us should have to wonder whether or not we will lose our lives as we educate themselves.” Andrea De Young, International Baccalaureate teacher at Thornwood, saw the event as an introduction to get students to become trailblazers and speak to issues that are important to them. She said, “This gives students an opportunity to be leaders of the community and to stand up for the things that they feel strongly about in an organized, responsible, and mature way.” Thornwood Principal Dennis Willis stood on the football field, along with several teachers and municipal officials, and observed the Walkout event. Willis described the walkout as a historical “non-violent moment,” similar to the ’60s Civil Rights Movement: “They realize what is at stake and they are not willing to back down. Their voices speak of [citizenship] and this reassures me that our work as educators, parents and community leaders is not in vain. This is historical.”

Thaddeus Jones, State Representative for the 29th District, agreed. He said, “I just compared this to the ’60s, when Black students didn’t have the right to peacefully protest together. This is a moment in time for these students to come out and not only exercise their Constitutional rights, but protest about an issue that is affecting them every day.” Shawn Staples, South Holland Chief of Police, was also present during the walkout and commented on the event. “I saw young Americans here at Thornwood coming together for a great cause. They understand that gun violence is real and they’re coming together to stand for change. I like to see things like this more often—a very peaceful demonstration, 17 minutes for 17 victims. I am very proud of them,” he said. Organizers for the walkout included Kamryn Nelson, Raphael Camacho, and Nayeli Munoz, who took the lead role in putting the event together. The walkout lasted from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 am. According to an NBC news report, more than 185,000 students nationwide participated in the walkout. An online CNN report stated that one student, Justin Blackman who attends Wilson Preparatory High School in North Carolina, was the only student in his entire school of 700 to walk out during the national event. The 16-year-old African-American’s walkout is currently being discussed on social media. Western prints in oak frames 22 1/4” x 28 1/2 Broken Rope, Charles M. Neuromas

Neuromas are a scarring of a sheath surrounding the nerve. They usually occur between the 3rd and 4th toes but can be found elsewhere as well. Symptoms include feeling a click in the ball of the foot, or electrical shocks shooting to the ends of the affected toes. Surgery is nearly always needed to alleviate the symptoms although injections, padding or physical therapy can help. If you have any questions concerning neuromas or any other foot problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

St. Catherine Hospital received the Longevity Award Saturday, March 10 at the Lakeshore Chamber annual dinner. The hospital was honored for 90 years of outstanding contributions to economic growth and the betterment of Northwest Indiana. The acute care hospital, built by business leaders, industrialists and the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ in April of 1928, has been recognized through the years as a leading force in medical excellence, technology and extraordinary care. “We are pleased and grateful to accept the Longevity Award,” said Leo Correa, chief executive officer, St. Catherine Hospital. “This honor serves as confirmation of our ongoing commitment to always give our best to our patients, staff, doctors and the diverse communities we serve.” St. Catherine Hospital, located at 4321 Fir St., in East Chicago, has thrived as a result of its 90-year legacy to deliver lifesaving care, innovative technologies and significant medical “firsts” to its patients, according to Correa. The hospital’s recent acquisition of the da Vinci Si® Surgical System is just one example of the hospital’s ongoing Microdermabrasion Mu l t i f u n c t i o n Fa c i a l Machine /with needle-free Mesotherapy Module. commitment to offer new medical technology and treatment to its patients, Correa said. The robotic technology enables surgeons to perform the most complex and delicate procedures with less pain, quicker recovery times and fewer complications. “Expanding medical technologies for all patients across the Community Healthcare System of hospitals is a hallmark of our commitment and dedication to quality care for all,” he added. St. Catherine Hospital also received an Investment Award from the City of East Chicago. The award is presented to those businesses that reinvest more than $700,000 in physical site improvements and employment opportunities that contribute to economic development in the community. Projects that contributed to the Investment Award include renovation of the hospital’s main lobby and new exterior signage. “These projects reinforce our dedication to offer the highest levels of healthcare services possible to our patients and our visitors,” Correa said. IDOR Warns: Beware of Tax Season Phone Scams The Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) is partnering with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to share the top tax scams for 2018, referred to as the “IRS Dirty Dozen.” The second scam in the 12-part series is phone scams. Phone scams are designed to threaten taxpayers into paying money toward bogus tax bills. These scams surge during tax season and often trick the taxpayer into paying money to criminals claiming to be from the IRS or DOR. Most of these phone scams involve con artists claiming to be from the IRS and demanding payment on a fake tax bill. Threats including arrest, deportation and/or revoking a driver’s license are being made to intimidate the victim into paying. Con artists

then convince the victims to provide cash payments usually through a wire transfer, prepaid debit card or gift card. A new phone scam deployed in recent weeks has identity thieves filing fraudulent tax returns with refunds going to the taxpayer’s bank account. The scammer will then call the victim to convince them to send the refund money to the scammer. The federal government’s Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) reports over 12,000 victims who have paid over $63 million as a result of phone scams since 2013. “If you have an outstanding tax liability owed to the State of Indiana, the Indiana Department of Revenue will contact you

first by mail,” said DOR Commissioner Adam Krupp. “While we do communicate regularly with customers over the phone to work through outstanding liabilities or aid customers in making a payment, we will never call to demand payment or threaten a taxpayer.” “If Hoosiers ever question any kind of correspondence from either tax agency—DOR or IRS—we encourage them to call our agency directly to ask questions and confirm what actions need to happen if any.” Remember DOR and the IRS will never: • Threaten a taxpayer with arrest or deportation for not paying. • Demand taxes be paid without giving the taxpayer the opportunity to question or Grass-cutting, bushtrimming, aerating, powerraking, spr ing-cleanup, gutter-cleaning, sodding, mulch, stone-brick, re t a n n i n g - w a l l s , f u l l yinsured. The Big Event! is Bishop Noll Institute’s premier annual fundraising event, benefitting the Principal’s Scholarship Fund. Now in its fourth year, the evening of dining and entertainment will take place from 6 to 11:30 p.m. April 27 in the school fieldhouse, 1519 Hoffman St. in Hammond. Attendees will enjoy a casual but fun-filled evening with food catered by Pepino’s in Schererville, beer and wine, DJ and dancing. Guests also have the opportunity to win exciting prizes like gift cards, vacations, sport tickets and more throughout the night’s raffles and a live auction. Other entertainment includes a bags tournament, wine pull and 50/50. “This is always a fun night at Bishop Noll

that we look forward to all year. Our alumni, family and friends who attend always enjoy it and get a lot out of the evening,” said Mary Ellen O’Neill, Bishop Noll’s Director of Advancement. “Even more importantly, this event makes a difference in the lives of our students, many of whom are able to receive all the benefits of a private, Catholic education thanks to fundraisers like this one.” Tickets cost $50 per person if paid before April 20 and $60 thereafter. Attendees must be 21 or older. Tickets to The Big Event! are available at the school or online at bishopnoll.org. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I’m selling my home in a great area. We had many offers and the one we took was $20,000 over the asking price. The buyers are putting in a lot of cash and are only financing $100,000 of the $600,000 sale price. We’re afraid that our house will not be worth that much, but does the lender care? Answer: Lenders care very much about value and risk. They will make a loan based on the sale price or the appraised value, whichever is less. If a buyer wants to pay more, that’s okay—as long as the additional price is not paid with lender funds. Appraisal problems are not common, but they do happen. When Realtors look at comparable properties that have sold, they also do a little give and take. Compared to the similar homes, the subject home may have more land, more updates, more square footage, etc. This is how a higher asking price is justified. Obviously, the buyer agrees, because he has accepted the sellers selling price. An appraisal is not an

exact science, it is more of an art, or opinion of the appraiser, based on what he has seen with comparable properties that have sold. In your case, you have a home selling for $600,000 and a borrower who is putting up $500,000 in cash. The lender is providing $100,000. The lender wants to be certain that in the event of foreclosure the property has sufficient value to re-pay the loan. In this case, even if the property sold at a 75 percent discount from the sale price, there would still be enough value to re-pay the lender. From the lender’s perspective, this is a loan situation with virtually no risk because there is so much equity in the property—that $500k put up by the purchaser. BOB SEEM A N ‘A K A’ ELV IS BR INGS CHEER TO SENIOR CITIZENS: The 69 year-old retiree from MiJack Corporation has retired, but not really. “I’m as busy now as I have ever been,” Bob, of New Lenox, noted recently when N 2 N caught up with him at the Lansing Post Office. Bob visits with residents of St. Anthony Senior Residences in Lansing on a regular basis. Bob attends the Village Church in Dyer, IN and as is his custom, spreads good will and cheer wherever he goes. Since he retired, Bob went back to work for MiJack as a consultant, three days a week. When not doing that he visits with seniors, and Thursdays are reserved for his granddaughter. His Elvis outfit is an attention grabber where ever he goes and the seniors “get a kick out of it” he notes. Bob Seeman—a truly kind and generous person! Pat celebrated her 87th birthday on March 15th. The Cavotos are the parents of James, Richard Jr., Mike, Susan, and Joe. The family lived in Dolton for many years and Richard worked around the clock, sometimes as many as 3 jobs at a time to provide a nice life for his family. His main job was at RJ Donelly Corporation, a nd at t imes he tended ba r at loca l establishments. Pat was a homemaker. They were RCA Victor Recording Artists. Dubbed the “Rollickin’ Raconteurs of Humor and Song,” the duo appeared on all the most important net work telev ision prog ra ms of t he day. They appeared on Art Linkletter’s House Part y, Kellogg’s T V and Radio Commercials, Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show, The Jimmy Dean Show, Tennessee Ernie Ford Show, Perr y Como Show, Steve A llen Show and t he late, great “Hootenanny!” The duo was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. We can learn all about these amazing artists from Homer’s daughter Tracy Haynes Vrab who will share the story of her father and mother’s country music and comedy careers. RICHARD ZEKVELD Imagine chaotic waves stirred up by competing winds. That’s what a troubled sea looks like. That’s also what a troubled soul looks like. Days before his death, Jesus says, “Now my soul is troubled” (John 12:27). ‘Troubled’ can describe turbulent waters. Inner turmoil torments Jesus. Competing winds contribute to his turmoil. “What shall I say?” he cries out. “Father, save me from this hour!” (John 12:27). Like a soldier on D-Day, approaching the beaches in a landing craft, he knows that ‘H-Hour’ is moments away. He will run straight into hell-fire for our sin. His insides churn. “Father, save me from this hour!” But a conflicting desire takes over. “No! It was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name!” (John 12:27-28). Jesus loves his Father. Consuming passion to complete his Father’s liberation mission

clashes with his desperate desire to escape the horrors of hell. Zeal to honor his Father, complete his mission and save us wins out. He runs headlong into hell-fire. Are you troubled to see Jesus in turmoil, tormented by competing desires? After all, Jesus is God! Yes. But he is also human. Even as a perfect human he recoils at the horror of death, cut off from his beloved Father. But a greater desire to complete his mission, driven by his love for God and us, wins out. Jesus understands us in turmoil. He went through it for us. He goes through it with us. When we face overwhelming pain, a crushing burden, an agonizing cross, we can cry out, “Father, save me from this hour!” Jesus says, “I will bring you through it. I will save you from it. I will strengthen you to pray, ‘Father, glorify your name!’” Richard Zekveld Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church
