As a kid growing up in South Holland, IL, Enyinnaya Omelogu always wanted to follow in his parents’ footsteps and join the healthcare community. He witnessed the humbling and fulfilling emotions his mother Deborah would experience. She told Enyinnaya, “joy and sorrow are not unusual on any given shift.” A proud graduate of Thornwood High School, Enyinnaya didn’t immediately pursue his calling when he enrolled at his local community college. After two years at South Suburban College taking general education courses, Enyinnaya enrolled at University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) from 1999-2004 where

Know Risk Tolerance at Different Stages of Life SUBMITTED BY BOB KRYGSHELD

his healthcare passion was reignited. Enyinnaya decided to return to his roots by applying to SSC’s Nursing Program. “My goal was simply to become the best person that I could be.” Another reason Enyinnaya says he pursued nursing is because of its variety of pathways. He could focus on specialties like dialysis or family medicine. Other nursing options included anesthesia or emergency room nursing like his mother. As a visual learner, he excelled in SSC’s hands-on Nursing Program curriculum. “The small class sizes were a great asset to me,” said Enyinnaya, who especially enjoyed his clinical rotations shadowing nurses and other healthcare providers. Enyinnaya completed his degree in 2009 and passed the NCLEX soon after. Further training was accomplished in the hospital setting where he collaborated with physicians and other medical personnel to coordinate patient care. He performed detailed assessments on patients, and learned how to provide compassionate care. Enyinnaya took advantage of his opportunities and continued to obtain additional credentials by earning his Master’s Degree in Anesthesiology from Barry University in Florida. Enyinnaya credits his community college education for giving him an opportunity to combine his general studies and nursing education at two different times in his life at a

more affordable cost. “The return on investment allows nurses to provide compassionate care for others and still enjoy a fulfilling lifestyle.” Armed with three degrees, Enyinnaya was able to smoothly transition from Registered Nurse (RN) to Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). He is currently employed at NorthStar Anesthesia. He works with surgeons and other medical staff to provide anesthesia for patients undergoing medical procedures. Enyinnaya often thinks of his mother while paying his experiences forward. He serves as a preceptor to nursing school students as well as anesthesia students/medical students, teaching them the inner workings of anesthesia in the operating room. Moreover, Enyinnaya continues to pay it forward in more than one way. He started a scholarship in memory of his cousin Chima, who passed away after a long fight with cancer. Because of the phenomenal nurses who took care of his cousin, Enyinnaya thought it would only be appropriate to fund a nursing education scholarship. He established the Chima Omelogu Memorial Fund at SSC in 2017 by raising monies with friends. The goal of the scholarship is to fund four $1,000 scholarships for nursing students annually. Enyinnaya says “making a difference in someone’s life is priceless.” Or in his case, making the difference in several lives.

As an investor, you’ll always need to deal with risk of some kind. But how can you manage the risk that’s been made clear by the recent volatility in the financial markets? The answer to this question may depend on where you are in life. Let’s look at some different life stages and how you might deal with risk at each of them: When you’re first starting out . . . If you’re early in your career, with perhaps four or even five decades to go until you retire, you can likely afford to invest primarily for growth, which also means you’ll be taking on a higher level of risk, as risk and reward are positively correlated. Given your age, you have time to overcome the market downturns that are both inevitable and a normal part of investing. Consequently, your risk tolerance may be relatively high. Still, even at this stage, being overaggressive can be costly. When you’re in the middle stages . . . At this time of your life, you’re well along in your career, and you’re probably working on at least a couple of financial goals, such as saving for retirement and possibly for your children’s college education. So, you still need to be investing for growth, which means you’ll likely need to maintain a relatively high risk tolerance. Nonetheless, it’s a good idea to have some balance in your portfolio, so you’ll want to consider a mix of investments that align with each of your goals. When you’re a few years from retirement . . . By now, you might have already achieved some key goals— perhaps your kids have finished college and you’ve paid off your mortgage. This may mean you have more money available to put away for retirement. But you’ll still have to think carefully about how much risk you’re willing to take. Since you’re going to retire soon, you might consider rebalancing your portfolio to include some more conservative investments, with values less susceptible to financial market fluctuations. The reason? In just a few years, when you’re retired, you will need to start taking withdrawals from your investment portfolio —essentially, you’ll be selling investments, so, as much as possible, you’ll want to avoid selling them when their price is down. Nonetheless, having a balanced and diversified portfolio doesn’t fully protect against a loss. However, you can further reduce the future risk of being overly dependent on selling variable investments by devoting a certain percentage of your portfolio to cash and cash equivalents and designating this portion to be used for your daily expenses during the years immediately preceding, and possibly spilling into, your retirement. When you’re retired . . . Once you’re retired, you might think you should take no risks at all. But realistically, you could spend two or three decades in retirement, so you may need some growth potential in your portfolio to stay ahead of inflation. Establishing a withdrawal rate—the amount you take out each year from your investments— that’s appropriate for your lifestyle and projected longevity can reduce the risk of outliving your money. Of course, if there’s an extended market downturn during any time of your retirement, you may want to lower your withdrawal rate temporarily. As you can see, your tolerance for risk, and your methods of dealing with it, can change over time. By being aware of this progression, you can make better-informed investment decisions. Is Pain Or Procrastination Interferring with Your Workout Plan? With everyone spending more time at home, a lot of people are making new exercise resolutions to try and stay in shape. But for many people, their resolve to get in shape fizzles before the snow melts. If you’re one of those with good intentions but poor follow through, there are ways to get back on track. “Many of us resolve to exercise more, but as with making other resolutions, we don’t create habits that last,” says Dr. Suhyun An (www.drsuhyunan.com), an expert on regenerative medicine and co-author of Demystifying Stem Cells: A RealLife Approach To Regenerative Medicine. Dr. An says that once people commit to staying on a fitness plan, it’s important not to push too hard, which could cause pain and injury. Some pain may be manageable, though, and there are ways to address it between workouts in order to stay on track. She offers tips to help you stick with a workout plan as well as ways to prevent pain from sidelining you: HOW TO STICK WITH IT Create an action plan. If you’ve been a consistent couch potato, you might not want to set a goal to run a marathon in just a few weeks. So, create a sensible action plan that contains the steps you need to reach incremental goals, then bigger ones. “Making small goals at first and celebrating your success along

the way enables you to build confidence and look forward to working out, rather than dreading it and skipping it,” Dr. An says. “Then, as you feel stronger, increase the duration and frequency of your workouts over time.” Create a support network. When you tell your family members, friends, and colleagues about your resolutions, you might find others who have set goals that align with yours. “These are the people who can help hold you accountable and motivate you to succeed,” Dr. An says. “You might also inspire others through your actions. If you find exercise partners, you’ll reap the benefits of positive social experiences and inspiration.” Make small adjustments that add up. Waking up 30 minutes early to tackle a workout is great, but what if that doesn’t fit within your busy day? Schedule your workouts like you would schedule meetings and commit to sticking with them. “You can fit in mini-workouts throughout your day,” Dr. An says. “These may include walking up and down stairs, stretching or marching in place while you’re on the phone. Small changes lead to big results.” HOW TO ADDRESS THE PAIN Massage. “From deep tissue work to more gentle techniques, massage can help you relax,” Dr. An says. “Its therapeutic benefits include relaxing muscles and sore tissues as well as

easing chronic pain.” Physical therapy. “You’ll learn how to gently and effectively move and stretch your muscles while working to strengthen your joints,” she says. “Physical therapy can help the cause of your pain and may include exercises, stretching, or even water therapy that works your muscles in a pool.” Hot and cold therapy. “Heat from a heating pad, a hot bath, or other source boosts blood flow and allows muscles to relax,” Dr. An says. “Cold from ice or a cold pack slows circulation and reduces swelling, slowing the body’s ability to send pain messages.” “Don’t get discouraged,” Dr. An says. “We all have off days. It’s advisable to take days off from working out to rest or heal or if you’re not feeling well. You can emerge refreshed while reaffirming your commitment.” Dr. Suhyun An (www.drsuhyunan.com) is the clinic director at Campbell Medical Group in Houston and an expert on regenerative medicine. She is co-author of Demystifying Stem Cells: A Real-Life Approach To Regenerative Medicine and travels the nation speaking on those topics. Dr. An received a BS in Biochemistry and Biophysical Science from the University of Houston, graduated cum laude from Parker College of Chiropractic, and got her master’s in nursing science from Samford University.

Get Out in the Sun and Explore While Social Distancing Jessica Mlinaric, author of the book Secret Chicago, has a list of Chicago gems that you can get to within walking distance while still practicing social distancing. “There’s never been a better time to give familiar places a second look and learn something new,” said Mlinaric. “That’s why I’m sharing some spots from the book Secret Chicago: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure that can be enjoyed outside from a distance while you’re getting some air. Uncovering a neighborhood secret offers the thrill of discovery in your own backyard. Just be sure to explore these hidden gems while abiding by social distancing guidelines.”

Reebie Storage and Moving Co. 2325 N. Clark St. - Lincoln Park The Reebie Storage and Moving Co. building in Lincoln Park caught my eye when I moved to the city a decade ago and took walks around the neighborhood. It was built in 1922 at the height of the Egyptomania craze brought on by the discovery of King Tut’s tomb. The entrance features vibrant terracotta sculptures of beetles, lotus leaves, and the faces of the Reebie brothers as pharaohs!

Site A and Plot M 13250 Central Ave. - Palos Heights, IL Watch your step strolling through the Cook County Forest Preserve, you might stumble on a buried nuclear reactor! The world’s first nuclear reaction took place in Chicago, and the reactor moved to a nearby research facility. When the lab was decommissioned, the reactor and nuclear waste were buried in the woods. It’s safe to look, but just don’t dig!

for wealthy Chicagoans to escape urban congestion with charming homes and double-wide lots. Admire its hodgepodge of architecture and stone pillars at every corner.

Zion Evangelical Lutheran 19th & Peoria - Pilsen From the front, it looks like a normal church, but in the back, it’s a preserved relic of the past. This Pilsen church was built in 1880 by the German Lutheran congregation. After a fire and a windstorm, it was almost destroyed by 1998. Descendants of the original congregation delivered the owner a book about the church’s history, and he decided to save what was left of the building. It stands as a surprising symbol of the neighborhood’s past.

Tied Houses If you’re strolling Chicago’s neighborhoods, chances are you’ll see a painted globe carved into a building’s facade. It’s more than decoration, it’s a symbol of the city’s harddrinking history. Before Prohibition, these buildings were “tied houses,” or saloons owned or subsidized by breweries to sell only their beer. About 41 tied houses survive today, with Schlitz being the most common.

Shit Fountain 1001 N. Wolcott Ave. - Ukrainian Village

The Villa District Chicago’s smallest neighborhood is a lovely place to take in some air while social distancing. The Villa District is a 126-home micro-neighborhood on the Northwest Side. One of the city’s first planned developments, it was built in the early twentieth century

Ukrainian Village is home to a lovely bronze sculpture perched on a sandstone column and a gently trickling fountain. The sculpture depicts a coil of crap. Chicago artist Jerzy S. Kenar created and installed the fountain on his property to remind passing dog owners to clean up after their pooches. If you want to learn more, pick up Jessica’s book Secret Chicago: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure. Happy exploring, and remember, practice social distancing! To call the shots is to make the decisions for a group. It originated around 1900 in marksmanship training, when the coach would tell the shooters where the bullet should strike the target. The most accomplished shooters could earn the right to call the shot. 6

Heart Smart JOSH BOOTSMA In the sixteenth century, a plague fell upon Wittenberg, Germany, home of Martin Luther, a man integral to the Protestant Reformation. In a letter entitled “Whether One May Flee from a Deadly Plague,” Luther explores what a Christian’s duty is during an epidemic. Using the Bible as his guide, he acknowledges that God’s purposes are perfect and beyond our understanding. He points out that different people may have differing views and opinions—and both can be right in God’s eyes. He looks to Jesus’ command to “Love your neighbor as yourself” as a good motivation for both going out to help people and staying in to keep people safe (Mattew 22:39). Towards the end of his letter, he says the following (edited to fit our current circumstance): “You ought to think this way: ‘Very well, by God’s decree the enemy has sent us deadly COVID-19. Therefore I shall ask God mercifully to protect us. Then I shall

wash my hands, practice social distancing, wear a mask, and see that those around me are cared for. I shall avoid places and persons where my presence is not needed in order not to become contaminated and thus perchance infect and pollute others, and so cause their death as a result of my negligence. If God should wish to take me, he will surely find me and I have done what he has expected of me and so I am not responsible for either my own death or the death of others. If my neighbor needs me, however, I shall not avoid place or person but will go freely. See, this is such a Godfearing faith because it is neither brash nor foolhardy and does not test God.’” May God bless you as you make difficult decisions during this time. Could You Be Missing Out On Senior Discounts? BY CHRIS ORESTIS People who reach or near their retirement years often need to watch every penny. Sure, some of them are financially fit and don’t lose sleep worrying that their bank accounts and investments will run dry.out of money. For many, though, frugality is the watchword as they struggle to make it through each month. Fortunately, aging does come with at least one financial perk—senior discounts that restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores, airlines, car rental companies, hotels and other businesses offer to their older clientele. These discounts give older Americans a break on prices for everything from a gym membership to a fast-food meal to a movie ticket. You would think all seniors and their families would be all over these opportunities. But, surprisingly, many people don’t take advantage. In some cases, that could be because it doesn’t occur to ask whether a discount is available. In other cases, people just have a hard time thinking of themselves as seniors. But you need to be aware—and you should always ask. In scouring for discounts, here are a few other things to keep in mind: Don’t assume you’re too young. How old do you need to be? It varies. That’s one reason it’s always good to ask. You could already be eligible for a discount at a business and not realize it. For example, AARP membership starts at 50 and comes with numerous discounts built into the membership. Chili’s restaurants offer a 10 percent senior discount to those 55 and older. At the other end of the scale, Taco Bell will give you a free beverage, but not until you are at least 65. Sometimes when you go matters. Some discounts happen on a particular day of the week. Just as an example, some Captain D’s restaurants offer a “Happy Wednesday” discount where once a week seniors can choose from among eight meals at a reduced

price. No one expects you to schedule your entire life around discounts, but for some individual things—such as a night at the movies or dinner out or even a shopping trip to a retail store—it’s worth knowing that going a day earlier or a day later might make a difference. Occasionally, you don’t even have to be a senior. Plenty of opportunities exist to save money whether you’re advancing in years or not. Many stores offer store “memberships” that come with a discount with each purchase. Also, the American Automobile Association is another organization whose members enjoy a number of discounts in much the same way AARP members do. Individually, some discounts might amount to just a dollar or two. But as you take advantage of more of them, those savings grow. When you’re on a fixed income – or just want to get the most out of every dollar you have—the difference over time can be significant. Crisis Management: How to Lead During COVID-19 BY SHAWN BURCHAM COVID-19 has changed, at least temporarily, the world of work for many people as employees hunkered down at home instead of commuting to an office. As a result, a lot of businesses are finding out just how strong their corporate culture is and how resourceful their employees are when managers aren’t hovering nearby, says Shawn Burcham (www.shawnburcham.com), author of Keeping Score with GRITT: Straight Talk Strategies for Success, and founder and CEO of PFSbrands, the parent company of Champs Chicken, Cooper’s Express and BluTaco. “One thing my company has always done that I believe is beneficial in times like these is to help employees develop an ownership mentality,” Burcham says. “Ownership thinking means taking accountability for the quality and success of your work, and it comes from actively encouraging a culture that promotes trust, communication, objectivity, and gives employees a stake in the outcome.” By necessity, many companies are now communicating by phone or video chats, which means having employees who take responsibility for their actions is more important than ever. Yet at the same time, the business’s leaders still have decisions to make and orders to give to those employees. That means, Burcham says, that it’s also more important than ever for a company’s leadership – and everyone who reports to them – to band together as one strong team. “Fortunately, many of the things that make for a good leadership team in the best of times are the same ones that help the company successfully maneuver through more challenging times,” he says. Some of those include: Promote transparency. Mistakes happen when people don’t have the information they need to do their jobs. When something affects others in the organization, Burcham says, make sure you put it on the “team table” so that everyone can understand what is happening and provide input. Don’t undercut others to make yourself look good. Disagreements can happen anytime people gather to discuss problems and solutions, but it’s important to keep things civil. “Attack the issues, not the person,” Burcham says. “Work through appropriate channels and be conscious of what your fellow leaders are trying to accomplish.” Make sure meetings are well organized.

Everyone has endured meetings that took too long and got off track. Burcham certainly has and at one time he would have labeled himself anti-meeting. “I felt that meetings were a waste of time. because most of the meetings I’d been in were a waste of time,” he says. Eventually, Burcham grudgingly accepted that some meetings are necessary, but he says it’s important that they have an agenda, a start and end time, no sidebar conversation, and that next steps and accountabilities are created at the meeting’s close. Accept that a decision is a decision. It’s all right for people to debate and offer differing opinions during the decision-making process, but once a decision is made everyone needs to support it, Burcham says. “You don’t want situations where people continually reopen discussions about decisions that have already been made,” he says. “And passive disagreement is not an option.” Know that calm is contagious – relax, look around, make a call. Several years ago Burcham adopted this mentality and worked to make it part of his personal mission statement. When faced with situations or conversations that may not be going his way, he mentally takes his brain to this personal mission statement. Burcham says, “I’m naturally a very impatient person and always will be. My personal mission statement has helped me to better control my emotions and it’s been a critical model as all of our companies work to navigate through these challenging times.” “In the best of times, successful company growth is dependent on the capabilities of its leaders,” Burcham says. “As times grow difficult, how well the business fares also comes down to how well those leaders are able to rise to the occasion.” Shawn Burcham (www.shawnburcham. com), author of Keeping Score with GRITT: Straight Talk Strategies for Success, is the founder & CEO of PFSbrands, which he and his wife, Julie, started out of their home in 1998. The company has over 1,500 branded foodservice locations across 40 states and is best known for their Champs Chicken franchise brand which was started in 1999. Prior to starting PFSbrands, Burcham spent five years with a Fortune 100 company, MidAmerica Dairymen (now Dairy Farmers of America). He also worked for three years as a Regional Sales Manager for a midwest Chester’s Fried chicken distributor.

Indiana Launches Sheriff Portal The IN.gov Program, a division of the Indiana Office of Technology, has launched the Indiana Sheriff Portal at www.in.gov/ sheriffs to provide a single resource for citizens and businesses to locate information regarding each county sheriff throughout the state. The new tool provides a map-based directory to locate contact information for all 92 county sheriffs. “We are grateful the State of Indiana is providing this service to make it easier to connect with local sheriffs. This modernization was no doubt long overdue and needed, and as its development continues, we are keeping an eye towards ensuring that new features continue to be added that increase the number of online interactions available for users and make it as easily accessible as possible,” Executive

Director of the Indiana Sheriff’s Association Steven Luce said. “The state’s online presence is our virtual welcome mat, and we want to ensure that businesses, residents and visitors alike have the tools they need to interact with their State of Indiana County Sheriff’s offices in a way that eliminates redundancy and improves usability and access for users in one place.” The Indiana Sheriff Portal is the beginning of a larger initiative that allows local government entities, such as counties, cities, towns or departments of such, to leverage the tools and services of the IN.gov Program. By using tools already licensed for use on IN.gov, local governments are able to obtain enterpriselevel technologies for use by Hoosiers across the state, including building a website, at very low cost.

How Mother’s Day Became an Local Leaders Support Village Official Holiday in 1914 Residents During Pandemic BY TOM EMERY Mothers’ Day is May 10 this year, and mothers everywhere will rejoice. So will the greeting-card companies, flower shops, and telephone providers. Though celebrated in pockets in previous years, Mother’s Day has been an official holiday since May 9, 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as a day to honor the nation’s mothers. “The signing was not that important to Wilson in a political sense. But it would not have taken much persuasion for Wilson to sign it,” said Andrew Phillips, curator of the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library in Stanton, Va. “Strong women were greatly influential in his life, including his mother, his first wife, and his three daughters.” Ellen Wilson, the President’s first wife, died three months after the proclamation. The concept for Mother’s Day was nothing new. Local celebrations were common in America, though nothing was accepted nationally. Some attribute the idea to Julia Ward Howe, composer of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” who first organized a “mother’s day for peace” on June 2, 1872. Many also cite Anna Jarvis, a Grafton, W. Va. housewife who began the push for the holiday to honor her own mother, who died in 1905. As early as 1868, the elder Jarvis established a local committee for a “Mother’s Friendship Day” to heal wounds in families broken by the Civil War. Prior to that, she had also organized “Mother’s Day Work Clubs” to ease the suffering of ill and wounded Civil War troops. In 1908, Jarvis organized official commemorations in Grafton as well as Philadelphia. In 1910, West Virginia declared Mother’s Day an official holiday. Jarvis, though, clearly had a flair for self-promotion. In 1912, she trademarked the phrases “Mother’s Day”

and “second Sunday in May” and created an international association for the holiday. Though Jarvis claimed much of the credit herself, the establishment of Mother’s Day was also promoted within the women’s suffrage movement. “The suffragettes were among the first to call for the holiday,” remarked Phillips. “Of course, the Mother’s Day of what everyone envisioned then is much different than what it became.” Eventually, forty-six states celebrated the holiday in some form. In 1913, Congress passed a resolution for the observance of Mother’s Day by government officials. The following year, the legislature approved a joint resolution calling for the official designation of the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. Wilson signed the proclamation on May 9, only one day ahead of the second Sunday of the calendar. As a result, there was not a lot of fanfare in the holiday’s first year. “But it caught on fast,” said Phillips. “Hallmark began producing greeting cards by the early 1920s, and soon the holiday was moving closer to what we know today.” Jarvis, though, watched the popularity with disdain. Angered that Mother’s Day had become commercialized, she spent her efforts and inheritance to fight for its removal. She found the greeting card craze particularly distasteful, lamenting that cards were “a poor excuse for the letter you are too lazy to write.” In one instance, Jarvis reportedly filed a lawsuit to block a Mother’s Day festival and was arrested for disturbing the peace at a sale of carnations for war mothers in 1925. She died penniless in 1948. Ironically, Anna Jarvis never had children, unlike millions of American women before and since. According to 2010 Census figures, the United States had 85.4 million mothers, and some 81 percent of American women became mothers by age 40 to 44.

First Ward Alderwoman Shirley Drewinski (top)and State Rep. Will Davis are among several political leaders in Thornton Township to assist residents during the coronavirus pandemic. More than 7,500 plus masks were issued to local residents during Davis’ May 2nd Free Mask Giveaway. –––––––––––––––––––––––

BY PATRICIA MUHAMMAD The 2020 coronavirus flu outbreak has caused a devastating amount of sickness and loss of life. In the south suburbs, government institutions, schools, and many non-essential businesses have been shut down. To stop the spread of the virus, a stay-at-home order was put in place on March 20th by Governor Pritzker; since then, a new executive order now states all citizens must wear a face mask while in public. Thornton Township political leaders have reached out to their constituents to support them during the COVID-19 pandemic. State Legislator, William Q. Davis, Assistant Majority Leader, 30th District of Illinois, and several local legislators hosted a Free Mask Giveaway held May, 2nd, at Beggar’s Pizza in Harvey from 9 am-12 pm. The Giveaway box included a package of non-perishable foods, hand sanitizers, and four masks. The event was sponsored by Napoleon Harris, (15th District); Thaddeus Jones (29th District), Beggars Pizza, Obeweiss Diary, among others. Riley H. Rogers, Mayor for the Village of Dolton has partnered with local food businesses to help ease the financial burden of Dolton residents. “I initiated a small business pop-up food giveaway. I partnered with eight local businesses who will issue free sandwiches to our residents. These businesses include Domino’s Pizza, Checkers, Sharks Fish & Chicken, and Maxwell Polish, among others.” In one day, more than 1,600 slices of pizza were issued in the Domino’s parking lot. The mayor also provided operational updates on social media regarding masks deliveries and community health. He said, “We recently received a high volume of calls and online requests for masks. We successfully delivered more than 600 masks to Dolton residents.” Mayor Riley encouraged all residents to continue practicing social distance by standing six or more feet apart away from the next person. Since the outbreak, 104 corona cases were confirmed in Dolton. Harvey’s First Ward Alderwoman, Shirley

Drewinski, ensured that residents in her district received a wellness check during the shelter-in-place order. “I reached out to more than 315 residents in our ward, and we made sure that they were called,” Alderwoman Drewinski said. “We wanted to know what their needs were and we did our best to accommodate them. We also feed one-hundred staff members, including doctors and nurses, at Ingalls Memorial Hospital.” Tequila Jalisco Mexican restaurant in Harvey prepared the ordered lunches. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Drewinski’s May 13th All-You-Can-Eat pancake event has been canceled. Residents will receive tomato and peppers plants for gardening instead. For the vegetable giveaway, residents may call 708-596-7470. Though recent reports suggest that corona cases are spiraling down, the unemployment rate has seen a spike in unemployment claims. More than 30 million American workers have filed for unemployment since March of this year. Thornton Township food pantry has served as a beacon of support for residents in need of food. Township Supervisor, Frank Zuccarelli stated in a press release that there has been a sharp increase in food assistance since the outbreak began in the area. A new COVID-19 Testing site in the south suburbs opened last month located at 3824 W. 159th Street, Markham. Daily operational hours are from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday. The site is available for seniors, 65 or older, with pre-existing medical conditions. First responders and residents 17 and older are encouraged to get tested. “We are all connected and as a village, and we will get through this together,” Mayor Rogers said. As of April 28th, Cook County reported more than 1,347 deaths, and more than 31,953 confirmed cases. The state of Illinois reported 52,918 confirmed cases and 2,559 deaths. In a May 3rd, NBC Live Coverage report, more than 66,000 Americans were among those who have lost their lives since the outbreak struck the country.

Phoenix Awarded $360,000 to Assist with Home Repairs The Villag?e of Phoenix was awarded a total of $360,000 to help area homeowners with repairs, State Senator Napoleon Harris, III announced on April 17. “Sometimes families have to postpone repairs on their homes to pay for food and medicine, and the home’s value goes down due to the condition,” Harris said. “These living situations are often not a matter of choice, that no family should bear, with or without a crisis.” The Illinois Housing Development Authority Board of Directors awarded the Village of Phoenix to help low- and very lowincome homeowners with necessary home repairs. The group awarded $11,000,000 statewide through the state’s Single-Family Rehabilitation Program. The lump-sum is projected to help at least 326 families.

The Single-Family Rehabilitation Program provides forgivable loans of up to $45,000 per household to assist with necessary repairs to remove documented health and safety hazards. Eligible repairs include roofing, flooring, and plumping, among others. A roof-only option is also available for people who do not need other repairs. Those recipients are offered up to $16,500 to militate against future roof damage. “The money awarded will change the lives of low-income homeowners by helping them improve the safety and habitability of their homes,” Harris said. “I encourage anyone who needs help to apply.” Households can apply for this grant by contacting the Village of Phoenix at 708-3311455. They will walk applicants through the process and explain eligibility.

Ways to Avoid Catching Covid-19 As society digs into its battle against COVID-19, a health researcher at Ball State University recommends behaviors to adapt as soon as possible to avoid illness. “Our society is more diverse than ever, and we have developed a tolerance for a variety of behaviors due to greater amalgamation of cultures, traditions, etiquettes, and norms,” said Jagdish Khubchandani, a health science professor. “In general, we tend to ignore unhealthy and unsanitary behaviors in the guise of other peoples’ choice, personality type, family habits, or culture. “During and after the current pandemic crisis, we need greater awareness, collective action, and common civic behaviors driven by scientific evidence on transmission of emerging infectious disease agents such as coronaviruses. We must also not hesitate from educating or questioning family members, colleagues, and the general public on behaviors that pose danger to self and the society.” Given the current evidence on mechanisms of transmission and action of COVID-19, Khubchandani offers up 13 behaviors and habits to be embraced: • Take regular showers. While people are sheltering in place, some may neglect daily routines, but showering is a must because COVID-19 can live on surfaces for days. • Keep your clothes clean. Don’t wear the same clothes for many days. Do laundry frequently. • Stop nail biting, thumb sucking, and rubbing eyes. • Stop scratching your head, face, or body. • Wash fruits and vegetables, and avoid eating them immediately in aisles, stores, or car. • Don’t litter the inside and around your house. This could increase risk for household members, while littering around the community can burden the sanitation workers. Recent instances of people throwing used masks and gloves in public places will increase risk for waste management workers and trash pickers. • Clean your car. Dispose of leftovers and edibles, trash, masks, and gloves. • Maintain hygiene while growing your hair, beard, or nails or using hair and face accessories. • Cover your face when you sneeze or cough. • Wash your hands after using restrooms, coming back from public places, after grocery shopping, pumping gas, using elevators, or using high traffic door knobs or electric switches. • Clean your desk space, cell phone, and computer devices. • Don’t rely on carryout or delivery as your sole source of food for every meal every day, and be sure to eat enough and consume healthy foods. • Don’t reuse wipes, masks, gloves, and personal care devices without cleaning them.

IN THIS MARKET THE RIGHT AGENT CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE!

Navigating COVID-19 in Our Local Market

D L O

MIKE BUDER As the world nervously watches this season of COVID-19 (Corona Virus), the pandemic has prompted responses from every industry, and nearly every level of organization in the country. I continue to pray for God’s comfort to those families who have personally experienced sickness and loss of life. Most of the rest of us are dealing with economic stumbling blocks, logistical changes in how we perform social events, school, church, shopping, and relationships both in and out of our immediate households. How then, has COVID-19 affected our local real estate market, especially as we enter what was primed to be an especially hot spring market? Fortunately real estate, mortgage, and title businesses have been determined essential in the state of Illinois. The good news is our local market is still thriving. Demand for single family residences has stayed steady—this is mainly due to the fact that borrowing costs have plunged to new lows (average rate of 30 year fixed rate mortgage is 3.29%). Also, the job market is strong outside of those businesses that were affected by the states shelter-in-place requirements. Experienced Realtors are getting pending deals closed by navigating new ways to do real estate. This includes working with some partially-shut-down municipalities in order to obtain city inspections and compliance certificates. We are doing a lot of remote troubleshooting and electronic signature document execution and the title companies have evolved to remote closings. Many of our listings are getting multiple offers within the first couple days on the market. For now, conditions that make for a fantastic market for both buyers and sellers still exist. This includes crazy low rates and steady home values. Of course, the degree and nature of the COVID-19 outbreak may change. I will provide you a hyper-local context that may be lost in the national media coverage. After all, the fact is I’m YOUR LOCAL Realtor (not an epidemiologist). God bless and stay safe… If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@ remax.net, Website: www.BuderHomes.com. Judge Upholds Restrictions on Church Gatherings

Real Estate Specialists

Real Estate Questions & Answers

A federal judge in Illinois ruled Sunday that Gov. JB Pritzker’s stay-at-home order is constitutional, even though it interferes with people’s right to gather in large numbers for worship services. In a decision that came just three days after the complaint was filed, U.S. District Judge John Z. Lee acknowledged that the freedom of religion is a “foundational” right and that the order does, in fact, interfere with the free exercise of that right. “But even the foundational rights secured by the First Amendment are not without limits; they are subject to restriction if necessary to further compelling government interests — and, certainly, the prevention of mass infections and deaths qualifies,” Lee wrote. “After all, without life, there can be no liberty or pursuit of happiness.” He noted that more than 60,000 Americans have died from COVID-19, “more than the number of people who perished during the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Pearl Harbor, and the Battle of Gettysburg combined.” The suit was filed on Thursday, April 30, by the Beloved Church in Lena, a village in Stephenson County, and its pastor, Stephen Cassell. It sought to permanently block Pritzker’s latest, revised stay-at-home order, which went into effect May 1.

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Are homes still selling through this virus pandemic? Answer: Homes are still selling. We have not seen any decreases in home prices in local Illinois or Indiana markets. Some homes are selling just as fast as the precovid market. Some homes are still getting multiple offers. Some buyers are taking advantage of this lower buyer competition to buy houses. Obviously, the number of showings are down due to the virus concerns. Limited data shows that vacant houses are getting more showings than occupied homes. Keep in mind you don’t need 10 showings to sell a home. Just one buyer is all you need. To protect our sellers, we have signage that states: “A maximum of 4 people can enter a home at a time. Please be sensible and caring. Don’t enter this home if you have a fever, sickness symptoms or have been exposed to someone carrying the Covid-19 virus. Please wear gloves and

carry disinfectant wipes with you.” Lockboxes eliminate the need for sellers to be present for the buyers arrival. We also supply our sellers with shoe covers for buyer use during the showing. We also ask that the seller not be present and not return to the home right away. Although not totally conclusive yet, studies we have read show that these viral particles could float in the air for about a ½ hour, but they don’t swarm like gnats. That is if the buyers even have the virus. We also use video tours, so buyers who are reluctant to enter a home can take our video walk through, just as if they were walking through it on an actual showing. Paperwork can be signed using electronic signatures. This can be done on your phone or computer from the safety of your own home. Even closings are being done in parking lots at the title company or isolated rooms in attorney offices. Your Safety is our number one priority!

Under that revised order, churches may hold public services in groups of 10 or fewer as long as they follow social distancing requirements. Despite that, the church reportedly held its regular service on Sunday. WREX-TV in Rockford reported that a public relations firm representing the church said churchgoers were provided hand sanitizer and family units were spaced 6 feet apart. As of Monday, according to the state’s COVID-19 website, there have been 63 cases of the disease in Stephenson County, but so far, no deaths. The Beloved Church case is just one legal challenge seeking to overturn the stay-athome order. Republican Reps. Darren Bailey, of Xenia, and John Cabello, of Machesney Park, are both challenging the order in state courts. A circuit court judge in Clay County last week ruled in favor of Bailey’s complaint that the order violated his civil rights. But while that case was being appealed, Bailey asked that the order be vacated and the case returned to circuit court, where he plans to file an amended complaint. Cabello’s suit challenges the legality of the order as a whole and is seeking to have it overturned statewide. A hearing in that case is scheduled for May 14 in Winnebago County.

Grants Provide Water Bottle Filling Stations to IL Schools Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation and Illinois Children’s Healthcare Foundation today announced the new H2O On the Go grant program to replace existing water fountains with new water bottle-filling stations at Illinois elementary, middle and high schools. The Foundations are launching this program as part of their initiatives to improve the overall health and well-being of Illinois children. The new water bottle-filling stations are made by Elkay, headquartered in Downers Grove. Tooth decay, while largely preventable, is the leading chronic infectious disease among children. Choosing water instead of sugary beverages like soda, juice and sports drinks can help keep teeth strong and reduce cavities by almost 25%.[1] It can also help combat obesity, increase energy levels and improve students’ cognitive function. H2O On the Go will make it easier for Illinois students to have access to drinking water throughout the day and choose water over other beverages. Schools who apply and are approved will receive a water bottle-filling station along with reusable water bottles and toothbrushes for students. “Making it easy for kids to make healthy choices helps instill good health habits,” said Lora Vitek, executive director of Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation. “This includes making beverage choices for optimal oral health and overall health. By installing water bottle-filling stations in schools across the state, we can reduce students’ sugar intake and encourage them to drink more water.” “The Illinois Children’s Healthcare Foundation is committed to improving the oral health of all children in Illinois,” said Heather Higgins Alderman, the Foundation’s president. “Our vision is, ‘Every child in Illinois grows up healthy.’ We are delighted to partner with Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation to encourage children to drink

Illinois Has 13th Highest Identity Theft Rate in the U.S. Coronavirus-related scams have proliferated in recent weeks. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), some businesses have already been reprimanded for misleading claims around coronavirus treatments and cures. But not all scams are related to false advertising. Other common scams include fraudulent online vendors claiming to sell in-demand goods, fake charities soliciting donations, robocalls pushing phony products, and phishing emails designed to trick victims into sharing personal information. One obvious consequence for victims of these scams is losing money. Another major threat is identity theft, which has been on the rise for the past few years. In 2019, the FTC received 650,572 identity theft reports—about 198 per 100,000 residents. These numbers represent an astonishing 46 percent increase since 2018 and nearly a 100 percent increase over the past five years. Coinciding with the rise in identity theft reports is an increase in data breaches—incidents in which an individual’s name and private or confidential information is exposed. The Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) reported 1,473 data breaches in 2019, over nine times the number in 2005 when the ITRC first started tracking data breaches. While not all data breaches lead to identity theft, a larger number of data breaches means that more Americans have their personal information exposed, increasing the likelihood that identity theft will occur.

The FTC classifies identity theft incidents into several different categories: credit card fraud, loan or lease fraud, phone or utilities fraud, bank fraud, employment or tax-related fraud, government documents or benefits fraud, and other identity theft. In 2019 the three most common types of identity theft were credit card fraud, loan or lease fraud, and phone or utilities fraud. Notably, there were 271,823 reports of credit card fraud in 2019, an increase of over 260 percent since 2015.

While Americans of all ages are at risk for identity theft, the FTC received the most identity theft reports for people aged 30-39. According to the ITRC, millennials are more willing to share their personal data online and less fearful of their information being compromised than other age groups—a combination that makes them especially vulnerable. While children and older adults are also high-risk, it is possible that many instances of identity theft for these groups go unreported or unnoticed.

To determine the U.S. states where you are most likely to get your identity stolen, researchers at Construction Coverage, a review site for commercial auto and workers compensation insurance, analyzed the latest data from the FTC’s Consumer Sentinel Network 2019 Data Book. The researchers ranked states according to the number of identity theft reports per 100K population. Besides numbers of identity theft reports, researchers also calculated the total number of identity theft reports in 2019, change in identity theft reports from 2018 to 2019, and the most over-indexed type of identity theft—the category of identity theft that exceeded its respective national share by the greatest amount. Regardless of location, it’s important for residents to stay vigilant about scams that could result in identity theft, especially during a crisis like COVID-19. The analysis found that Illinois recorded 23,139 identity theft reports in 2019. For every 100,000 residents, Illinois experienced the 13th most identity theft reports among all U.S. states. Here is a summary of the data for Illinois: • Identity theft reports per 100K population: 182 • Total number of identity theft reports 2019: 23,139 • Year-over-year change in identity theft reports: 42.0% • Most over-indexed form of identity theft: Credit Card Fraud For reference, here are the statistics for the entire United States: • Identity theft reports per 100K population: 198 • Total number of identity theft reports 2019: 650,572 • Year-over-year change in identity theft reports: 46.4% • Most over-indexed form of identity theft: N/A For more information, a detailed methodology, and complete results for all states, you can find the original report on Construction Coverage’s website: https://constructioncoverage.com/ research/identity-theft-reports-by-state

Generous Hoosiers Needed in May to Save Lives Versiti Blood Center of Indiana is encouraging Hoosiers who have recovered from COVID-19 to make an appointment to donate their blood plasma now while encouraging others to make appointments to donate life-saving blood in May and June. Versiti forecasts that the need for all blood types will rise as summer approaches; typically, since high schools and universities are on break and families head off on summer vacations, summertime donations tend to sharply decline. Now: Convalescent blood plasma needed from recovered COVID-19 patients Versiti continues to seek blood plasma donations from recovered COVID-19 patients throughout Indiana. Versiti donor centers in Indianapolis, Fishers, Carmel, Greenwood, Lafayette and Terre Haute are all accepting convalescent plasma donations from those who’ve overcome the virus. Blood plasma from recovered COVID-19 patients is filled with potentially life-saving antibodies being used by Versiti’s partner hospital partners throughout the state to treat seriously ill COVID-19 patients. The treatment transfers antibodies that a recovered patient creates into critically ill patients, is approved by the FDA as an emergency investigational new drug and offers hope to thousands of Hoosiers diagnosed with the virus. As of Tuesday, 33 recovered COVID-19 patients in Indiana had donated plasma, resulting in 94 blood products for use to help their neighbors seriously ill with COVID-19 fight the virus. Potential recovered COVID-19 donors can call 1-866-702-4673 to register to donate plasma and can also learn more about Versiti’s program and register at http://www. versiti.org/covid19plasma. In May/June: Donate life-saving blood at a Versiti community blood drive or local donor center Versiti’s generous blood donors kept the Hoosier state’s blood supply strong despite threats the coronavirus posed since early March. The community outpouring across the state has been tremendous. As hospitals return to scheduling elective surgeries, Versiti reminds Hoosiers that donating blood saves lives. Patients in need of blood tomorrow, whether they’re facing surgery, battling cancer or recovering from a traumatic accident, rely on the generosity of blood donors today. Versiti is calling on Hoosiers to make a life-saving donation in May. All blood types are needed, especially O-negative blood, which is the universal blood type given to patients in emergency situations and those undergoing surgery. Thanks to Our Township Staff for Their Selfless Service Frank M. Zuccarelli, Thornton Township Supervisor During these unprecedented and dangerous times, each one of us owes a debt of gratitude to those nurses, doctors, EMT’s, police and firefighters who are on the front lines every day, laying it all on the line every day, battling the Coronavirus on our behalf. We are all aware of what they do—of the sacrifices they make in fighting to keep us healthy and safe. But I also want to bring attention to another group of essential public service workers, who rarely receive the accolades or tribute they too richly deserve for their sacrifice and tireless labors. They are the hundreds of township employees across this state that man the local food pantries, general assistance offices and senior transportation services—feeding thousands of families and providing weekly, curb-side, ride service for hundreds seniors for essential travel. During normal times, Thornton Township provides food to over 3,000 families and senior citizens every month and now, with businesses closing—some for good—and thousands being laid-off, these numbers have skyrocketed.

Each week, cars line up for blocks as township employees carry out scores of boxes of nutritional food and, when they not handing out food boxes, they are picking up donated food; assembling thousands of boxes for the next distribution; delivering boxes to hundreds of senior shut-ins; providing daily lunches for seniors and more. This is a continuous process of twelve to fifteen hour days. During this pandemic, Thornton Township has also maintained its Monday-Friday senior transportation services —making sure that hundreds of senior residents who can no longer drive—get to scheduled medical services such as dialysis and doctor appointments or trips to the grocery store, pharmacy or other essential destinations. As they do their job, our staff expose themselves and their families to serious health risks too and that is what makes their commitment to helping their neighbors all the more inspiring. As Supervisor I have always tried to make Thornton Township a place where everyone has a neighbor they can count on in difficult times. I am proud to say we are that neighbor and I am so very proud of the township staff who make that a reality every day.

Social Distancing: 15 Ways To Stay Both Sane and Safe Practicing social distancing to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic may sound scary or impossible to do, but there are ways to appropriately handle the process, says Jagdish Khubchandani, a health science professor at Ball State University. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued guidelines to limit the spread of COVID-19 that include recommendations for social distancing—a term epidemiologists use to refer to a conscious effort to reduce close contact between people and hopefully stymie community transmission of the virus. “Social distancing can be tough on people and disrupt the social and economic fibers of our society,” Khubchandani said. “Given the existing crisis of isolation in societies—with probably the loneliest young generation that we have today—social distancing can also take a personal health toll on people, causing psychological problems, among many others.” Khubchandani recommended 15 ways to counterbalance the effects of social distancing: 1. Maintain a routine. As much as possible, social distancing should not disrupt your sleep-wake cycle, working hours, and daily activities. 2. Make social distancing a positive by taking the time to focus on your personality and personal health, reassessing your work, training, diet patterns, physical activity levels, and health habits. 3. Carve time to cook for yourself and others in need. Add more fruits, vegetable, vitamins, and proteins to your diet (most adults in the United States do not consume enough fruits and vegetables). Get 2-3 meals a day. 4. Go for a walk or exercise at home. Definitely go out in nature as much as possible. Only half of American adults today get enough exercise. 5. Do not let anxiety or being at home lead you to indulge in binge eating or alcohol and drug use. Don’t oversleep, but do sleep at least 7 hours. Our recent study found that more than a third of Americans sleep less than 7 hours. 6. Social distancing can cause anxiety and depression due to disruption of routines, isolation, and fear due to a pandemic. If you or someone you know is struggling, there are ways to get help from a distance. 7. Think forward and try to make best use of technology to finish your work, attend meetings, and engage with coworkers with the same frequency that is required during active office hours. The good news: Working from home can make people more productive and happier. 8. Small breaks due to social distancing are also times to reassess your skill and trainingthink of an online course, certification, training, personality development, or new

language to learn. 9. Engage in spring cleaning, clear that clutter, and donate non-junk household stuff. Household clutter can harbor infections, pollutants, and create unhygienic spaces. 10. Social distancing should not translate to an unhealthy life on social media. While you can certainly become a victim of myths, misinformation, anxiety, and fear mongering, you may also inadvertently become a perpetrator, creating more trouble for communities. 11. Based on American Time Use Survey and leisure related time-spending patterns worldwide, we spend too much time on screen. Except for 1-2 times day to watch national news for general consumption and local news to check spread of COVID-19 in your own community, you are likely overconsuming information and taking away time from yourself and friends and family. 12. Reach out to people and offer help. Social distancing should also help reinvest in and recreate social bonds. Consider providing for and helping those at risk or marginalized (e.g. the elderly, disabled, and homeless; survivors of natural disasters; and those living in shelters). You will certainly find someone in the neighborhood who needs some help, this can be done from a distance, on phone, or by online activities and giving. 13. Check your list of contacts on email and phone. Certainly, there are people you have not talked to in a while—time to check on their wellbeing and connect. This will also help you feel more connected, social, healthier, and engaged. Be kind to all; you never know who is struggling and how you can make a difference. 14. Engage in alternative activities to keep your mind and body active such as: listening to music and singing, trying dancing or biking, yoga or meditation, taking virtual tours of museums and places of interest, sketching and painting, reading books or novels, solving puzzles or engaging in board games, trying new recipes and learning about other cultures, etc. 15. Do not isolate yourself totally (physical distancing should not become social isolation). Don’t be afraid, don’t panic, and do keep communicating with others. Great Design

With the global outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, the problems of seniors are more evident than ever as they attempt to access critical supplies and services. Isolation and depression are at an all-time high as individuals are forced to self-isolate or quarantine themselves, cutting off some of our most vulnerable populations from their normal support structures and coping mechanisms. The Link & Option Center, Inc., which has been providing mental health services since 1995 in the Chicago south suburbs, is seeking to fill that gap by deploying a Senior Wellness Concierge Call Center for older adults and those with chronic medical conditions. This Call Center will provide a live voice there and ready to help, whether the individual needs a grocery run, medication delivery, mental health services, or just a friendly, sympathetic person to talk to for a few minutes. Concierge coverage includes care coordination for: • Isolation Affects • Medical Appointments • Basic and Essential Needs
