BY ASHLEE DE WIT Schools are closed, but on a daily basis teachers are still working to help their students learn what they need to know, deal with their emotions surrounding this new reality, and prepare them for the next academic year. For this article, teachers at Lansing Christian School (LCS) offered a glimpse into their work as educators in a pandemic. Nancy Oostman and Beth Roels teach some of the school’s younger students: 31 four-year-olds. Typically they each have their own classroom, but they have partnered together for online learning. “It was all new, and we had no idea what to expect—we’ve never done anything like this before,” Oostman said. “I can’t say enough about the parents—they’re amazing. I have my own kids at home, so I know what it’s like to try to work from home and help them with their learning—and they [the PreK students] are little, so parents are really involved. It’s been a blessing to get to work with and talk to them more.” The PreK teachers recognize the demands on parents at this uncertain time. “There are parents with multiple children at home—most of them, actually,” Oostman said. “Some are working, some are healthcare workers. We are just keeping that in mind and telling them not to stress over this. If they can’t get it done, that’s ok, but it hasn’t really come up.” Some of the school work sent home is necessary: Lansing Christian is still tracking grades and sending report cards to all students, so there are some things that the students still need to learn. But teachers are also offering Facebook Live meetings and crafts that are optional. They get physical packets every two weeks, which includes both worksheets and craft supplies. Oostman also posts a half-hour “morning meeting” video each day. “They watch the morning meeting, and can work on things with paper and pencil,” Oostman said. “They have the work in front of them, which for four-year-olds is important. We try not to make everyday requirements huge.” On Tuesday and Thursday, Oostman and Roels take turns doing Facebook Live reading. “We also have Zoom meetings with them, which are hysterical,” Oostman said. “It’s so fun to see their faces light up when they see each other.” Like all the classes at LCS, the PreK students have a private Facebook page, where everyone can post pictures of the work they are doing. Of course, pictures and videos aren’t quite the same as being together in person. “The hardest part is not seeing them every day,” Oostman said. “When we heard that we were done for the year, [I had] a good long cry. Going from seeing them five days a week to hearing, ‘Your year is done, and you won’t have this group of kids again,’ has been so tough. They’ll be fine, but it’s been tough. We didn’t get to say a proper goodbye.” Some teachers at LCS face an added challenge in distance learning: foreign language. Lansing Christian School offers a Spanish immersion track, starting with kindergarten. These students, who do not come from Spanish-speaking families and may have no experience

whatsoever with the language, start school in exclusively Spanish classrooms. The immersive experience is particularly difficult to reproduce online, but that hasn’t stopped teachers from working hard to reach their students. “At first, it was a little hurried; it took a while to get into a rhythm of Zoom meetings, emails, and organizing everything (for take-home packets),” said second-grade Spanish immersion teacher Lety Cruz. “It’s definitely not the same as if we were in class. We had to adapt to new ways of instruction, and we’re doing what we can. One good thing is that this started later in the year; if this was the beginning of the school year, it would be even tougher. Now, I know where all my students are, academically. I know…how I can help them.” Alexa Van Beek, an LCS alum and a student teacher in the first-grade Spanish immersion class, is getting an unusual experience preparing for her career, but she’s taking it in stride. She’s supervised by Ivone Arsenault, one of the school’s most experienced Spanish immersion teachers. They worked together to create a plan for the remainder of the year. “The content has been able to stay the same, but the manner in which we present it varies,” Van Beek said. “Instead of doing everything together for things like math or social studies, I create videos that students can follow along with in their own book at home. We’ve also been able to read together on Zoom, which has been helpful for assessing things like reading fluency and creating that learning environment even when we are apart.” Cruz also creates video lessons, and she uploads them to her web page—every LCS teacher has one. She has Zoom meetings as well; half the class meets on Wednesday, and the other half on Friday, so students get more opportunities to be engaged. She has whole-class, interactive Zoom meetings on Thursday, where the students play games. And she offers one-on-one Zoom meetings to any student who wants one. “Some kids seem to enjoy video lessons more than Zoom, because they can pause and rewind—they can’t rewind me at school!” she laughed. But one student told Cruz that Continued on page 6

Financial Advice Column
Why Should You See a Financial Advisor? SUBMITTED BY BOB KRYGSHELD The social distancing and stay-at-home orders necessitated by the coronavirus have led many of us to feel isolated. Still, we’ve fought back through social media, “virtual” gatherings and walks in the neighborhood, where we could greet friends and neighbors (from 6 feet away). But when you’re dealing with the financial effects of the virus and you’re investing alone, you could encounter some problems that may prove costly. Of course, with so much investment-related information available online, on television and in any number of periodicals, it’s not surprising that some people feel they can invest without any assistance. But the volatility of the financial markets over the past few months has also pointed to the dangers of going solo in the investment world. And you might find that a professional financial advisor can help you in several ways, including the following: Taking emotions out of investing. During this period of market turbulence, many self-guided investors are letting their emotions drive their investment decisions. As a result, they sell investments when their price is down, “locking in” their losses. Furthermore, if they then stay out of the financial markets, they will miss out on the eventual recovery – and some of the biggest gains in market rallies usually occur right at the beginning. But if you work with a financial advisor who has helped you develop a personalized investment strategy based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon, you will be far less likely to react to extreme market conditions by making illadvised decisions. Maintaining perspective. When you’re putting away money for the future and you suddenly have a lot less of it, you might start to wonder if that future is somehow in jeopardy. But if you’ve been working with a financial advisor and following your investment strategy, you’ll know that you don’t have to immediately cash out those investments that have lost value, and you may not need to liquidate them for decades if they were designed for a long-term goal, such as retirement. By the time you do need to sell them, their value may well have appreciated significantly. And if you’ve got a well-constructed portfolio, you’ll also own shorter-term, less volatile investments to help meet your current cash flow needs. Understanding the history of investing. The recent market instability is unique in the sense that its cause – a worldwide pandemic – is so highly unusual, and it hopefully will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Typically, prolonged market downturns are triggered by explainable financial or economic factors, such as the bursting of the “dot-com” bubble in 2000. However, market drops of 20 percent or more – generally referred to as bear markets – are not at all unusual and have happened every few years over the past several decades. Financial advisors are well aware of this history and share it with their clients. And for many people, the knowledge that “we’ve been here before” is reassuring and makes it easier for them to continue following their investment strategies. The road to your financial goals is a long one, with many twists and turns. So you might like to have some experienced company along the way. Heart Smart JOSH BOOTSMA Home. A concept we’ve all gotten intimately familiar with in the last couple months. Do you know that the idea of home has significance in the Bible too? Adam and Eve, the first humans, were given a beautiful home in the Garden of Eden but were forced to leave because they disobeyed God. God gave Abraham and his offspring “this land [of Canaan] to possess” (Genesis 15), but an evil Egyptian pharaoh rose up and oppressed God’s people, supplanting them from their home. Through his servant Moses, God led his people out of exile and into a land “flowing with milk and honey” (Exodus 3:17). Yet the Israelites disobeyed God along the way and had to wait for decades before entering the land. When they finally arrived, discord grew among God’s people and sinful kings ruled the land, which eventually fell under exile to Assyria and Babylon. Even when not exiled and allowed to live at home, God’s people were still ruled by others. See a pattern? Ever since sin entered this
world, God’s people have not had a home— they’ve wandered and been conquered, looking forward to when a true, permanent home will come. Today, we still look forward, but we have an even greater homeward hope. God sent his son Jesus to die to satisfy the punishment that our sins deserve. Without him, you and I are completely “homeless” in an eternal sense. But when Jesus rose from the dead and returned to his home, he invited us to join him. The Bible tells Christians that we have “an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you” (1 Peter 1:4). In other words, our home is waiting for us. When united with Jesus in heaven, there will be no stay-at-home orders, just stayat-home privileges—and we will never want to leave. Josh Bootsma Member, Covenant Fellowship Church cfcsh.org
You May Be Able to Help Find a Solution to COVID-19
FAMILY FEATURES The human immune system holds important clues about how people naturally detect and defend against disease. For COVID-19, many people have been able to defeat the virus because of their natural defense systems. Now researchers are working to learn from these survivors’ immune systems to inform the development of new tests. If you’ve been affected by COVID-19, you can help. A leader in immune-driven medicine, Adaptive Biotechnologies - which specializes in developing products based on the body’s immune response to disease - is working with Microsoft on the virtual clinical study ImmuneRACE. As part of the study, they are seeking 1,000 participants between the ages of 18-89 from major metropolitan cities in the United States who: • Currently have COVID-19 • Have recently recovered from COVID-19 • Were exposed to someone diagnosed with COVID-19 Understanding testing options. There are currently two types of tests for COVID-19: PCR tests that indicate the presence of live virus from a nose or throat swab and serology tests that indicate exposure to and potential immunity against the virus by measuring antibodies in the blood.
A third type of test could help address current challenges with testing, resulting in these scenarios: • Complementary or alternative testing for individuals who have had known exposures or symptoms • Ability to triage patients and inform treatment strategies based on risk • Confirmation that individuals have recovered and are no longer infectious Such a test could also contribute key information as part of an immune scan. How can you get involved? To participate in the study or learn about more ways to join in the fight against COVID-19, visit ImmuneRACE.com. If you decide to participate and qualify for the study, a trained technician will travel to you to collect a deidentified blood sample in the comfort and safety of your home. The global race for solutions. Because COVID-19 is a disease affecting communities around the world, stopping its spread requires solutions from every angle. It is the belief of Adaptive Biotechnologies and Microsoft that the answers may lie within the immune systems of those who have been impacted by the coronavirus. The de-identified data collected through this study will also be made freely available to the global scientific community to help develop other solutions.

But to lessen the potential public health risk posed by having large numbers of voters at the polls at once, the rules have been temporarily modified to give EVERY registered Indiana voter the option to vote by mail or vote early in-person. If you’re planning to vote by mail, you can visit IN.gov to apply for an absentee ballot.
Don’t wait until it’s too late... the deadline to submit your application is 11:59 p.m. on May 21st! Those who would prefer to vote early inperson should contact their county election board for details on voting locations and hours. Early voting will begin on May 26th and run through noon on June 1st. While you may prefer to vote in-person on Election Day, please know that most counties will have far fewer polling sites than in the past. This could result in longer lines and waiting times to vote.
Businesses Can Adapt and Prosper In a Post-Coronavirus Economy As the economy restarts after the forced shutdown caused by COVID-19, businesses face a litany of unknowns. How quickly will shoppers return to their buying routines? Will temporary measures—working remotely, eating at home more, using delivery services—become permanent for large numbers of Americans? “Many businesses won’t be able to return to their old way of doing things, but in some cases that might be just as well,” says Bill Higgs, an authority on corporate culture and the ForbesBooks author of the Culture Code Champions: 7 Steps to Scale & Succeed in Your Business. (www.culturecodechampions.com) Often, those old ways probably weren’t working according to Higgs, a founder and former CEO of Mustang Engineering who recently launched the Culture Code Champions podcast. “Many companies have problems within their corporate culture that keep them from prospering the way they should,” he says. “They hire whoever is available instead of seeking out the best talent. They communicate poorly. They have silos within the company that create a lot of rework, and foster competition instead of cooperation.” Now is a chance to do better, and Higgs recommends a few thing business leaders should do as they work to bring their companies out of the economic downturn: • Be a visible presence. Higgs says he has known instances where, during a downturn, leadership goes into hiding. “They would just disappear,” he says. “They didn’t want to face the music with their people. But as businesses struggle to recover from our current crisis, owners and CEOs need to get out and talk to their people. I call it ‘management by wandering around.’ They need to engage their team and discuss how everyone can pull together to get through this.” • Understand this could be an opportune time to hire. The unemployment rate spiked upward as the economy went into freefall, but that means there’s an opportunity for businesses that want to
build a strong team, Higgs says. “During just about any downturn, the people who lose their jobs include top-notch performers,” he says. “Be on the lookout for that talent. Snap them up if you can. But even if you can’t hire right away, it’s important to be aware that those top performers are out there so you can go after them when the time is right.” • Don’t get comfortable. One problem businesses encounter when good times return is that they revert to bad habits, Higgs says. They aren’t as diligent about eliminating waste. They keep poorperforming employees long past the point where they should have parted ways. “Companies by necessity run lean in the lean times,” he says. “But they also need to run lean in the good times, so they will be in better shape the next time the economy goes bust. Staying lean in the good times is a game changer.” “One more mistake businesses make in good times is that when they get really busy, they stop selling, or at least aren’t as motivated to sell,” Higgs says. “I always say you should sell while the shop is full. That way when your sales people are in a client’s office, they don’t come off as desperately begging for work. Instead, they are talking about all the fun stuff and good stuff you’re doing at your company. That makes a big difference in how you are perceived.” Bill Higgs has recently launched the Culture Code Champions podcast, where he has interviewed such notable subjects as former CIA director David Petraeus and NASA’s woman pioneer Sandra Coleman. Culture Code Champions is listed as a New & Noteworthy podcast on iTunes. In 20 years, Higgs grew Mustang Engineering Inc. from their initial $15,000 investment and three people to a billion-dollar company with 6,500 people worldwide. Second, third and fourth-generation leaders took the company to $2 billion in 2014. Higgs is a distinguished 1974 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. He is an Airborne Ranger and former commander of a combat engineer company.

he enjoyed Zoom because he wanted to raise his hand and participate. “We have to be able to just talk,” Cruz said, noting that of her 13 students, only two live in homes with others who speak Spanish. Van Beek echoed the same sentiment: “The biggest challenge has been providing communicative opportunities for students,” she said. “Because the Spanish Immersion program works by immersing students into another language for the entire day, taking that program home has been difficult at times because most of our families do not have Spanish speakers at home.” Some of the students have older siblings who are also in Spanish immersion, which is helpful. Arsenault has also been making phone calls to converse with students whenever she can. Van Beek is handling much of the online communication with students. “As a student teacher, the technology and strategies learned in my education classes are all fresh in my mind, and have made converting to an online classroom much easier,” she said. “Internet resources like TeachersPayTeachers or Pinterest have also been immensely helpful for new ideas.” Cruz has taken advantage of technology long before the

But the teachers [at LCS] are all helping each other.” For their part, students are responding to their new surroundings in many different ways. “Students are missing the social aspect of school, and some parents are having trouble motivating their students,” Cruz said. “I encouraged all of them to find a routine.” But other students are thriving in the remote school setting. “From some students, I’m seeing more participation,” Cruz said. Overall, the teachers are happy with how their students are handling this new situation. “I think it has taken a little bit for them to adjust to what school at home looks like and what the expectations are for that,” Van Beek said. But now that they are settling into a

routine, she said, their work shows their talent and dedication. “I continue to be impressed by what they do with what they are given.” With all the work that the teachers, parents, and students are putting in, Cruz thinks that her students will learn what they need to know for next year. “I really believe that students will jump back to where they need to be in the fall,” she said. And she hopes the next school year will start back in the classroom. “I’m hoping that I can see normalcy come August,” she said. “But it’s hard to look ahead right now, because you’re just really focused on what you need to do at the moment.” “Teachers are human, with their own fears; we struggle with change,” she added. “We’re doing our best.” From the oldest teacher to the youngest student, everyone is working hard to make this new reality work. “At Lansing Christian School, we talk all the time about how we’re a family,” Oostman said. “You realize in times like these that you miss your family—the staff, the students. And they [the students] are going through the same things. My kids miss their teachers so much. Two of my Zoom meetings ended yesterday with students saying ‘I love you.’ You do the best you can to have that love and compassion come through the computer.”

5 Wise Things Retirees Can Do With Their Stimulus Checks Stimulus checks being sent to millions of Americans are seen as a lifeline for many. The economic calamity caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in massive unemployment, shrinking bank accounts, and tightened family budgets, and the $1200 check can provide a little breathing room while paying for some essentials. But for retirees who aren’t counting on the check to pay bills because they draw Social Security and can tap retirement savings, there are numerous options to put that stimulus check to good use, according to Chris Orestis, the president of LifeCare Xchange. “The stimulus money provides an opportunity to help a family member, add savings, pay down debt, or take care of some things you’ve been putting off,” Orestis says. “Retirees should look at their current situation and determine if the money is best used short-term or for future considerations.” Orestis suggests five ways for retirees to use their stimulus check: Bulk up your emergency savings. “The rule of thumb regarding an emergency fund is having enough money in quickly accessible cash to pay for at least three months’ worth of living expenses,” Orestis says. “If your fund is short, add your stimulus check.”
Invest it in stable places. If a retiree doesn’t absolutely need their stimulus check, it could turn out to be a nice bonus by growing it through investment. “People are understandably hesitant about the volatile stock market now,” Orestis says. “It has bounced back a few times recently and no one should panic sell or buy. Another stable investment is in maintaining a life insurance policy instead of allowing it to lapse. Life insurance policies are a stable asset that guarantee the face value and also have secondary market value if the owner decides to sell it off with a life settlement.” Invest in your health. Seniors are among the most vulnerable groups to suffer extreme symptoms from the coronavirus. “Add that to feelings of isolation and not seeing family,” Orestis says, “and it would be productive to spend the stimulus on an activity that would boost their wellness, both physically and mentally. Fitness equipment, an online fitness class, appointments with a social worker for counseling, or perhaps some added technology to help stay connected to loved ones and others.” Help a family member. “With so many people hurting financially from this crisis,” Orestis says, “retirees in a good position currently have a wonderful opportunity with these checks to provide added support for loved ones, especially

those among the millions now out of work.” Spend it on overdue repairs. This is an investment in a way, because spending on a car or home issue that’s relatively inexpensive now could save you from much bigger costs later if those issues are left unattended. “A lot of people put off home projects, car repairs or maintenance because they want to conserve funds and limit retirement withdrawals,” Orestis says. “Your stimulus check could be money well spent to prevent big expenditures.” “Americans are suffering financially, and seniors aren’t necessarily the exception,” Orestis says. “It’s a welcome bonus for many, so they should be sure to use it, or save it, wisely. Those that have the wiggle room to spend it can make their lives easier through this difficult time.” Chris Orestis (www.retirementgenius.com) is President of LifeCare Xchange and a nationally recognized healthcare expert and senior advocate. He has 25 years experience in the insurance and long-term care industries, and is credited with pioneering the Long-Term Care Life Settlement over a decade ago. A political insider, Orestis is a former Washington, D.C., lobbyist who has worked in both the White House and for the Senate Majority Leader on Capitol Hill. Orestis is author of the books Help on the Way and A Survival Guide to Aging, and has been speaking for over a decade across the country about senior finance and the secrets to aging with physical and financial health. He is a frequent columnist for Broker World, ThinkAdvisor, IRIS, and NewsMax Finance, has been a featured guest on over 50 radio programs, and has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, CNBC, NBC News, Fox News, USA Today, Kiplinger’s, Investor’s Business Daily, PBS, and numerous other media outlets.

If you are in the process of reviewing your credit report, the first thing to do is make sure that the information contained within the report is correct. Recently, a U.S. public interest research group published the results of a survey it conducted involving 200 adults in 30 states to test the accuracy of credit reporting. Their findings were as follows: 25% of the credit reports contained errors serious enough to result in the denial of credit; 79% contained mistakes of some kind; 54% contained personal demographic information that was misspelled, long-outdated, belonged to a stranger, or otherwise incorrect; and 30% of the credit reports contained credit accounts that had been closed by the consumer but incorrectly remained listed as open. If you find errors on your credit report, follow this procedure to correct these errors. 1. Make a copy of the report and circle the items you are questioning. Keep the original copy for your own records. 2. Prepare a letter to the Credit Reporting Agency (CRA) that provided you with the report in question and request to have the erroneous item(s) removed. If you have proof of payment for an item in question include a copy of that documentation. 3. If you were denied credit, prepare a letter to the creditor reporting the problem, especially if you feel you are a victim of fraud or identity theft. Inform the creditor that you are disputing an error reported to the CRA. State why the claim is inaccurate and include any relevant documentation to prove your point. 4. Send your correspondence via Certified Mail. You should receive a response from the CRA within 30 to 45 days. If the error has been corrected, they will send you a fresh copy of your credit report at no charge to show you that the item has been removed. They will also send a corrected report to any entity that received a report that contained errors within the last 6 months. If you cannot have a disputed item removed, you have the right to include your side of the story on the credit report. Your statement should be a concise explanation (100 words or less) as to why you are challenging the item in question. From that point on, this notation will be included in your credit report as long as the item in question remains on your report. Kidney Dialysis a Growing Need During the Pandemic The increased need for Kidney Dialysis is a growing crisis nestled within the COVID-19 Pandemic. Some quick facts: • According to the CDC, elderly dialysis patients residing in nursing facilities have been among the most at-risk population for COVID-19, with deaths in nursing facilities unfortunately spiking • A recent Columbia University study found that of 1000 patients with COVID-19, around 70% of them developed AKI (Acute Kidney Injury) and around 30% needed dialysis because of the severe state of their kidneys • Experts are seeing a spike in patients coming out of hospitals who need dialysis, with a shortage of equipment and caregivers available In effort to help solve this growing dialysis issue in response to COVID-19, Dialyze Direct (www.dialyzedirect.com ) has lent equipment to hospitals in need, they are performing onsite dialysis care in nursing homes, and are starting a training program to train caregivers
to use dialysis machines at-home for those in need. How Nutritious Are Our Crops? When COVID-19 forced Americans to eat more meals at home, the opportunity was there at least hypothetically to switch to a healthier diet, giving the body’s immune system a much-needed boost at a time when fighting off disease is critical. Unfortunately, many crops grown on American farms aren’t as healthy and nutrient-rich as they could and should be, says Steve Groff (www.stevegroff.com) author of the upcoming book The Future-Proof Farm
and founder of Cover Crop Coaching, which educates farmers and farm advisors about effective cover crop use. Cover crops are plants that are grown not to eat, but to improve the soil. Better soil produces more nutrient-dense crops, Groff says, which in turn can provide that help to the immune system. “Historically, farmers have not had an incentive to grow nutrient-dense food with a Continued on page 9

Take Fear Out of the Workplace BY RICH ARMSTRONG AND STEVE BAKER Fear. Uncertainty. A growing sense of panic every time the president delivers a national address about the far-reaching effects of the coronavirus. Chatter around the workplace these days is filled with questions like “Will I get sick?” “Will I have a job tomorrow?” “Can I afford to pay my rent?” What can you do when you’re facing fear in the workplace? The good news is that you can turn to four key principles: transparency, financial discipline, trust and respect for people, and a forward-focused approach. If you want to take fear out of the workplace, consider the following steps: • Embrace transparency. “Open-book management” is the idea that everyone inside your organization will be taught to understand the numbers that drive its success. Many growing business owners can be reluctant to share the truth about the financials inside their business. But they don’t realize the kind of risks they take on by doing so. They take on the burden of keeping the business alive—solo. In many cases, CEOs and owners are forced to shut the doors of the business to the shock of their associates, who are then left to wonder if they could have done something to contribute to a different outcome. That’s why it’s amazing what happens when you have the courage to share the news—good and bad—with your people. Treat them like adults. Get their attention directed toward what they can do to help—versus panicking. Plus, the more eyes you have on a problem, the more ideas you’ll have to solve it. It’s an automatic check-and-balance on the security of your business. • Discuss your cash position. It’s been frustrating over the past few years as we’ve watched startup companies—under the guidance of universities, incubators, and even investors—embrace the idea that the only way they could grow was to take on debt. Some of you may find yourselves in an over-leveraged position, but that can also be an opportunity to engage your workforce and tell them the truth about the situation. If you do find yourself in trouble, ask your associates for ideas about how they can contribute to cutting costs and increasing cash flow to the point where you can actually cover your debt obligations. You’ll be amazed at what can happen when you teach your people the rules of the game. • Protect jobs. Attracting talent and retaining it can be tough. We don’t have a future without people. In the not-
too-distant past, executives sometimes became idols when downsizing jobs became the new mantra, laying off people at a time they needed those jobs the most. Something similar could happen today. Difficult times can convince companies to resort to layoffs to survive. But it is wise to think differently. Whoever has the most talented workforce will dominate their markets as soon as 2021. The time to get your organization ready for the next upturn is today—not when it’s already arrived. By then, it may be too late. • Get ready for the upturn. As bad and as uncertain as things look today, here’s a secret: it’s actually harder to get a company ready to take advantage of an upturn than it is to prepare for a downturn. Downturns can actually be opportunities to fix things inside your business that you can’t afford to invest the time and resources in when the economy is booming. While it might seem counter-intuitive, the current down market comes as a kind of short-term relief. It’s giving us a chance to catch up—to make investments in our people and facilities— and to prepare ourselves to capitalize on the economic uptick that we expect to hit in late-2020, early-2021. By then, our workforce should be more stable and productive—and ready to take full advantage of the available opportunities. They have every incentive to do so, because, as owners of the business, they have a true stake in the outcome. We know how painful things are today. But there’s no reason you can’t also dare to be successful. And learning how to build a culture based on transparency, financial discipline, trust and respect for people, and a forward-focused outlook, is a great place to start removing the fear that’s pervading your workplace. Rich Armstrong (www.greatgame.com) is the president of The Great Game of Business Inc., and co-author, with Steve Baker, of GET IN THE GAME: How To Create Rapid Financial Results And Lasting Cultural Change. Armstrong has nearly 30 years of experience in improving business performance and employee engagement through the practice of open-book management and employee ownership. Steve Baker (www.greatgame.com) is the vice president of The Great Game of Business Inc., and is a top-rated, sought-after speaker and coach on the subjects of openbook management, strategy, and execution, leadership, and employee engagement. Baker is a career marketing and branding professional and an award-winning artist.
Crops cont’d. larger amount of vitamins and minerals,” he says. “Farmers are paid based on the quantity of their yield, not the quality. From their perspective, why enrich the soil the crops are grown in if that doesn’t lead to a greater yield? But when the soil is enriched with healthy minerals, so are the crops.” Change is in the air, though, and there are reasons more farmers should start focusing their attention and efforts on nutrient-dense crops, Groff says. Those include: The evolving public attitude. The attitude of indifference toward food quality has been changing as evidenced by the existence of such businesses as Sweetgreen, the restaurant chain that specializes in salads; the Row 7 Seed Company, which specializes in organic seeds; and numerous other ventures that have taken the pulse of the public in recent years. “Individual farmers who see what’s coming have been joining that trend toward better nutrition,” Groff says. The limits of vitamin supplements. It’s true that consumers can turn to vitamin supplements to make up for what’s lacking in their food, bolstering their immune system that way. But people also want to enjoy the taste of a good meal when they are getting their vitamins and minerals, which a pill doesn’t provide, Groff says. “Taste is also linked to the quality of the soil,” he says.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We are selling our home and we are trying to buy a Home in Indiana. We have placed offers on 3 properties and they were all rejected because we had a home to sell. There were multiple offers on 2 of these 3 homes. Our agent said eventually we will find a seller who will accept our contract even when we must sell our home first. Your thoughts? Answer: If you want to buy a home in a hot market, then you need to change your thinking. Why would a seller accept your offer contingent on selling your home, when they have other offers that are noncontingent? Your Plan A will not work in a hot market. We recommend using Plan B: Sell your current home first, then stay with a friend or relative or look for a short-term rental until you find a home. Your Church members would be a great place to look for possible rentals. Plan B eliminates a lot of stress because your home is sold, the money is in the
bank and you are in a great position to get your next offer accepted. Plus, you do not have to settle for a home that you are not completely in love with. Why rush or settle? A home is a big investment. If you can afford it and if you qualify to buy another home without selling yours, you can also buy your dream home noncontingent. You may own 2 homes for a short time, but you can stay in your own home and work on the other home before you move in. Mark Twain said these wise words: “Never allow someone to be your priority while allowing yourself to be their option.” E-mail us your Real estate questions at: Cathyah@aol.com. The Baby Manual: Free Baby Care Online Video Course Did you know that most people spend at least 45 hours to learn how to drive a car? In order to adopt a baby, prospective parents are required by law to take 10 hours of baby care education. Yet millions of parents welcoming a newborn in the U.S. each year are given absolutely no information on how to care for that baby when they leave the hospital. “It is this stressful journey of finding myself completely unprepared for my own daughter that inspired me to create ‘The Baby Manual’ video courses,” said Oksana Korsakova. “I brought together over a dozen industry experts, including a board-certified pediatrician, CPR instructor, lactation consultants, licensed marriage therapists, and certified sleep coaches” for the couses. The class is a complete baby care solution,
covering four hours of practical tips on baby gear, setting a routine, breastfeeding, reducing crying, health emergencies, travel, finding childcare, and overall adjustment to parenthood. “Dads love learning through the visual classes, which makes them much more engaged when the baby arrives,” said Korsakova. “I believe there is so much more we can do to support our next generation of parents-to-be. If we empower them to be calm, confident role models for their babies, our entire society benefits.” The course is available online at https:// www.babymanual.com/free-baby-carebreastfeeding-courses-during-covid-19pandemic/ . It’s a great resource for first-time parents, and others are sure to learn somthing valuable. All classes are currently available at no cost during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Food companies are getting on board. Some food corporations are already turning to farmers who can provide the more nutritious food that those companies want to sell to their customers, Groff says. General Mills in particular has taken an interest in working to improve the likelihood of healthy crop yields. The company has invested more than $5.5 million in initiatives to improve soil health. “I feel strongly that people need to be responsible and boost their immune systems with nutritious foods as a strategic way to stay healthier,” Groff says. “And everyone seems to agree with the multivitamin makers who say that our food is not as nutritious as it once was. But the solution needs to directly address that deficiency in our food. It all starts with regenerating the soil. It will produce more nutritious food when we allow it to do its job.” Steve Groff (www.stevegroff.com) is a lifelong farmer and the founder of Cover Crop Coaching, which educates farmers and farm advisors about effective cover crop use. He also does international regenerative agriculture consulting and is the author of the upcoming book The Future-Proof Farm. He has conducted well over 150 webinars and online training sessions, and has consulted for private companies, as well as for the USDA and several universities.

USDA NRCS Awards $8 Million for Illinois Partnership Projects The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has awarded more than $8 million in federal funds for the Illinois Working Lands, Water and Wildlife Conservation Partnership to protect working farmland, improve water quality, and increase and enhance wildlife habitat in rural Illinois. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has joined an alliance of partnering organizations including The Conservation Fund in planning and coordinating the projects that will be funded through the NRCS Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP). Illinois partners have pledged more than $11.2 million in matching funds to support the initiative, including more than $1.7 million in financial and technical assistance from the IDNR. “The IDNR is excited to receive this good news regarding funding through the Regional Conservation Partnership Program, which will support on-the-ground projects that will increase the quantity and quality of habitat that can benefit a number of species of
greatest concern here in Illinois,” said IDNR Director Colleen Callahan. Focused on key conservation priority areas in Illinois, the partnership intends to build protected habitat corridors along targeted stream segments through use of permanent conservation easements on working farmland. Conservation practices will be implemented that connect farmland with protected natural lands, prevent runoff and improve water quality, advance agricultural practices that improve soil health, and support farmers and landowner partners. In addition, IDNR will implement soil health practices on IDNR-owned and managed lands that are leased for agricultural production. The $8 million RCPP award for Illinois is one of 48 awards for projects in 29 states totaling $206 million nationwide. More information on the RCPP is available at https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/ nrcs/main/national/programs/financial/ rcpp/
E-Check Payment Processor Fee Waived Through Aug. 2 In an effort to further encourage online transactions with the Secretary of State’s office at www.cyberdriveillinois.com, Secretary of State Jesse White and Treasurer Michael Frerichs have worked to waive the payment processor fee associated with e-checks through August 2, 2020. White and Frerichs successfully partnered with National Cash Register (NCR)—the Treasurer’s approved payment processor company—to remove the e-check payment processing fee for three months. This e-check payment processor fee will be waived for the following online services: · renewing a vehicle registration; · obtaining a duplicate driver’s license or ID card; and · renewing a driver’s license through the Safe Driver Renewal program. “Don’t wait, renew online by e-check,” said White. “By renewing your vehicle registration or your driver’s license or ID card by e-check through August 2, you won’t have to visit a Driver Services facility once they reopen and the payment processor fee is reinstated. This will save you money and time. I commend Treasurer Frerichs for his efforts in working with NCR to make this happen.” “We are pleased to work with Secretary
White and NCR to waive the processing fee for e-checks,” Frerichs said. “We hope this encourages more people to consider online transactions through the Secretary of State’s website while we follow the social distancing guidance from state and federal health officials during this pandemic.” Paying with an e-check is simple. Customers first visit www.cyberdriveillinois.com to begin their transaction—either renewing a vehicle registration or a driver’s license or obtaining a duplicate driver’s license/ID card. Then they are automatically connected to NCR where they provide their routing number and bank account number on the secure payment page. After the transaction is completed and the e-check is verified, the Secretary of State’s office will begin the process of mailing the vehicle registration sticker or DL/ID card. Even though White extended expiration dates for at least 90 days after Driver Services facilities reopen for vehicle registrations, driver’s licenses and ID cards, he strongly encourages customers to renew online if they are able to do so. White also reminded the public that the federal government extended the REAL ID deadline by one year. The deadline is now October 1, 2021.
Illinois Oil Production Slumps During Pandemic CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS Oil production in Illinois has been on the decline for many years, but a steep drop in demand brought on by the economic slowdown spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a big bite out of the industry. “Our production for the first quarter was actually a little bit stronger, quarterover-quarter, but there’s no doubt that our production will decline in the second quarter,” Seth Whitehead, spokesman for the Illinois Petroleum Resources Board, said during an interview this week. “You know, just the eyeball test looking around, where I live in Fayette County, there are a lot of shut-ins at the moment. And right now, the price of oil is about $12 to $15 below where it needs to be for producers to turn a profit.” According to the industry website oilmonster.com, Illinois crude oil was trading at $21.25 per barrel on April 3, well below the roughly $35 per barrel most producers need to turn a profit. But with most states having asked their residents to limit nonessential travel, demand for oil in the United States has plummeted, and on Thursday, May 7, Illinois crude was down to $10.50 per barrel. Although it is a relatively small part of Illinois’ overall economy, oil production remains an important industry in parts of the state, especially southeast Illinois. Whitehead said one reason it is often overlooked is because the industry is concentrated in sparsely-populated counties. “You know, 15 counties produce 90 percent
of the oil in Illinois and 2 percent of the entire population resides in those counties,” he said. “So, it’s very spread out over a very rural area.” In the early part of the 20th century, according to IPBR, oil production was a major part of the state’s economy and Illinois was the nation’s third leading oil producing state. Today, the state produces only about 9 million barrels per year, Whitehead said. Still, he said, about 4,000 jobs in Illinois are directly tied to the industry, plus another 14,000 jobs in refineries and other industries that are indirectly tied to oil production. The industry also accounts for $770 million in personal income in the state and it provides royalty income to more than 30,000 individuals. It also generates about $330 million in tax revenue for the state, plus $93.4 million in property tax revenue for local governments. Even before the pandemic hit the United States, oil prices had been falling due to overproduction in countries like Saudi Arabia and Russia and a lack of storage capacity in the United States. It remains to be seen how long it will take for prices to recover enough for the oil industry in Illinois to bounce back. But Whitehead said industry officials here remain optimistic. “We’ll definitely see a short-term production decline…” he said. “But if the pandemic eases and things get back to normal sooner, rather than later, the industry has a better chance of coming out of this looking in pretty good shape. But the longer it goes on, obviously, the tougher it’ll get.”

Governor’s Daily Briefing Goes Virtual After Staffer Tests Positive coronavirus disease. The daily news updates on Illinois’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic will continue via video conference going forward. Dr. Ngozi Ezike, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, said the federal government shipped 140 cases of Remdesivir vials to Illinois on Saturday. She said each case of the drug, which is injected intravenously, provides treatment to about five patients.
CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS As of Monday May 11, Gov. JB Pritzker will answer reporters’ questions via video stream from his home in Chicago. Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike also spoke from her home via video during Monday’s news conference updating the state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Pritzker and senior staff are now working from home because a staffer has tested positive for COVID-19. Pritzker said Monday he has tasted negative for the novel
“We do expect to receive more Remdesivir in the future, but our hope is that the allocation that we received on Saturday can already help to improve outcomes for some patients who need it most,” she said. “The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases recently conducted a clinical trial and found that patients who received Remdesivir had a statistically significant shorter time to recovery, compared to those receiving a post placebo,” Ezike said during state leaders’ daily briefing on COVID-19.

Ms. Twin Green is Founder and President of The Link & Option Center, Inc., located at 900 E. 162nd Street, Suite 102 in South Holland. –––––––––––––––––––––––
A distressed young woman turns on her computer and activates a link provided to her a few days before by The Link & Option Center, Inc. A friendly, reassuring face appears on her screen. For the next hour, the two converse about a variety of topics including anxiety about her mother who has just been diagnosed with COVID-19, worries about her job from which she’d been furloughed, and the frustration she’s experienced dealing with her children who have been at home with her for weeks. The counselor listens carefully and provides some unconditional understanding, a bit of sage advice, and empowers her with resources. When the session ends, the counselor logs off the telehealth system hoping they’ve made a difference in her day. Ms. Twin Green, Founder, President and CEO, started the agency in 1995 in response to struggles her teenage son was experiencing. The initial purpose was to support the education of young minorities between the ages of fourteen and twenty-one in the South Suburban Cook County area by helping them strengthen their academic skills, make the transition to postsecondary education and define their career goals. Over the last 25 years, the growing demands of the community led The Link & Option Center, Inc. to widen their scope and transform into a comprehensive, community based behavioral healthcare organization, providing an array of mental health prevention and recovery, addiction treatment and recovery, and human services to adults, children, and adolescents, and their families coping with emotional issues. The Link & Option Center, Inc. now offers a complete selection of behavioral health care
services including psychiatric treatment, psychotropic medication management and monitoring, individual and family counseling, and services for DCFS-involved children and families. Court services for families include parenting education, supervised family visitation, anger management, domestic violence counseling, and re-entry transitional services for those returning from prison. Their case management team oversees client medical care coordination, Medicaid benefit assistance, SSI/SSDI application assistance, and credit restoration counseling. ER crisis intervention/discharge planning and homeless prevention services assist those in crisis. For seniors, they offer dementia care treatment and family support services. While most of their services have been conducted face-to-face previously, telehealth services are now just one of the ways that the organization has been adjusting to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Link & Option Center’s latest initiative is a Senior Wellness Concierge Call Center that will provide a 24/7 help line to seniors who require assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic and after the calm. These services include assistance with isolation affects, medical appointments, basic and essential needs, paying for health care, pharmacy support for medicines and medical supplies, medical and mental health care, health education on combatting chronic illness, legal referrals, and End of Life/Palliative Care and Family Support. For her efforts, Ms. Green received the Peggy A. Montes Unsung Heroine Award from Cook County Board President. The Link & Option Center, Inc. is truly gem in the region.

The family of Nathan Goodman finally got some measure of closure yesterday. While celebrating Mothers Day at the Lansing home of Goodman’s mother, Donna Vis, they were overwhelmed by a parade of more than 100 vehicles that passed in front of their driveway. On May 10, 2020, the Village of Lansing, Illinois took part in a special parade in honor of Master Sergeant Nathan Goodman, who was a special forces Green Beret killed in a parachute training accident back in January of 2020. His parents, Larry and Donna Vis, live in Lansing. Although MSG Goodman’s family was able to pay its respects in a Fort Bragg funeral service back in February, due to the Coronavirus, they had to cancel and postpone two events, a memorial and reception called “Celebrating Nathan Goodman’s Life” reception in Illinois, and his military honors burial in Arlington Cemetery. To help lift Ms. Vis’ spirits, her family and friends decided to conduct a vehicle parade and tribute for MSG Goodman on Mother’s Day, which happened to fall this year on what was Goodman’s birthday. Recognizing the difficulty that Goodman’s wife and mother would both be enduring today, family and friends reached out to Village of Lansing officials to organize a vehicle parade as a quarantine-appropriate way to honor Goodman’s memory and acknowledge the sacrifice that military family members also make. The Village had been hoping to hold some kind of local memorial for Goodman anyway, so they were happy to help coordinate the parade idea. At 2:00pm the procession left the TF South parking lot—the parade staging area—headed east on 186th, south on Wentworth, then west on 188th. The line of cars extended along the full three blocks approaching the Vis home.
