Last week, we traveled with two men, grappling with Jesus’ death. Jesus joined them, but they didn’t recognize him. First, he opened their eyes to recognize him from the Scriptures. Then he opened their eyes to recognize him physically.

The two men rushed seven miles back to Jerusalem to tell the disciples. As they shared – poof! Jesus stood among them. They thought he was a ghost.
First, Jesus confirmed that he had risen physically as the flesh-and-blood Jesus. He appealed to their senses. Look at me. Touch me. Watch me eat your leftovers.

He then led them to the Old Testament Scriptures to show how they pointed to him and how it was God’s plan that he suffer, die, and rise again to liberate the nations to live under his rule through the preaching of the gospel. “‘These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.’ Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures” (Luke 24:44-45, ESV).
Law of Moses, Prophets, Psalms. Jesus appealed to the three core Jewish divisions of the Old Testament in our Bibles. ‘Psalms’ refers to that section called ‘The Writings’. Jesus opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. Today, he comes in the Holy Spirit to open our hearts to see and receive him as Savior and Lord in the Scriptures. “Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us from God” (1 Corinthians 2:12, ESV).
Ask the Holy Spirit to bring you face to face with the risen Jesus in the Scriptures.
