THE KENTUCKY GATEWAY MUSEUM CENTER
The Kentucky Gateway Museum Center allows visitors to experience pioneer life to the present through dioramas, artifacts, historical/ genealogical library, and timelines. Their Regional History Museum illuminates the past through award-winning dioramas, more than 4,000 regional artifacts, and a gallery of fine art related to Maysville and Kentucky.
THE OPERA HOUSE
In the early years, the Opera House had hosted performers such as Tom Mix, John Sullivan, John Phillip Sousa, Buffalo Bill Cody, and Will Geer. It is listed on the National Registry of Historical Buildings and is the fifth oldest theatre still in use today.
RUSSELL THEATRE
For decades, Maysvillians enjoyed the movies at The Russell until 1983 where it was forced to close. It was used as many different types of businesses throughout the years, but in 1995 a group of Maysville citizens started a grassroots fundraising campaign to save the Russell.
THE COX BUILDING
Built in 1886, the Cox Building was historically restored and rededicated in 2012. The building symbolizes the magnificence of Richardson Romanesque architecture.
ST. PATRICK CHURCH
Saint Patrick Church has been a fundamental part of the Maysville and Mason County area since the very beginning. The current sanctuary was renovated by Fr. Hinds in 2003 to restore the sanctuary as best as possible to its original configuration.

EMBARK ON A TOUR OF AMERICAN HERITAGE
Just a short drive from Maysville, Kentucky sits the quaint town of Washington. This 1790’s village, named after Revolutionary War Hero and America’s first President; George Washington, held an important role in history through its pioneer settlers to the slave auctions held within the community.
TAKE A TOUR OF THE PAST
We will begin our historical adventure with a tour through the Paxton House-Visitor’s Center. Built by prominent lawyer and early emancipationist; James Paxton. Then, we’ll explore Mefford’s Ford, an authentic log cabin that contains the same timber from the flatboat that carried George Mefford and his family down the Ohio River in 1785.
GET AN IN-DEPTH LOOK AT LOCAL HISTORY
Next on our historical tour—The Harriet Beecher Stowe Slavery to Freedom Museum; located in the historic 1795 home of local County Clerk, this museum explores the local tradition that Harriet Beecher visited this home in the 1830-40’s and drew upon her experiences as a witness to slavery. Then guests will visit the Albert Sidney Johnston Home, originally the childhood home of the Civil War Confederate General of the same name and later family home of Union General William “Bull” Nelson. Before heading back to Maysville, we’ll visit the Washington Courthouse Site.
EXPLORE THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD MUSEUM
Upon our return to Maysville, guests will explore the Underground Railroad Museum. Known as the Bierbower House, this documented Safe House exhibits artifacts from the days of slavery including memorabilia and documentation on Maysville's role in the abolitionist movement and the role of slavery in America.
