Memphis, Tennessee Pre-Cruise Am erican Select P r em i u m Exc u rs i o n s Memphis’ first settlers were Native Americans, who were drawn to the area’s bluffs overlooking the river. By building their settlements on the Fourth Chickasaw Bluff, it protected them from flooding, and the mighty river allowed them easy transportation access. When the explorer Hernando DeSoto and his army arrived in Memphis in 1541, they set up camp and the city of Memphis exchanged hands with the Spanish, French and English eventually being sold to the U.S Government. Today, Memphis is nationally recognized for its contributions to our country’s music influences. Dubbed the “Birthplace of Rock and Roll,” this iconic city offers a vibrant culture and history is intertwined through every street.

Activities begin in the early afternoon with a relaxing driving tour of Midtown Memphis’s 342-acre Overton Park, where our first stop is the iconic Levitt Shell amphitheater. Here, we’ll be treated to a musical performance by our tour guide on the stage where Elvis Presley put on his first paid concert in 1954.

Our driving tour continues through Overton Square, a cultural hotspot of the 1970s that has since been revitalized into a thriving, modern entertainment district. We’ll pass Galloway House, and the Methodist church where Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Two put on their first performance. Other sites include Priscilla Presley’s high school, Church Park, and the W.C. Handy House Museum, the turn-of-the-century log shack that was home to the “father of the blues” himself.

We will uncover the history of the land grant that was given to the indigenous Houmas Indians who were the first owners of this gorgeous plantation.

INCLUDED TOUR

Vicksburg, Mississippi

For months Ulysses S. Grant and his Army of the Tennessee were trying to overtake Vicksburg, Mississippi – “ The Key to the South” as described by Abraham Lincoln. In late May 1863, Grant undertook a new campaign to gain access to this vital river city. After many attempts, Vicksburg still fought back and caused the Union Army to fall back. Grant chose to attack again full force at Champion Hill and Big Black Bridge, weakening John C. Pemberton’s Army causing it to retreat. Both Confederates and Union soldiers suffered drastically, but finally on July 4, 1863, Pemberton surrendered to Grant, leaving the Mississippi River in Union hands.

Included Vicksburg Hop-On Hop-Off C h u rc h o f t h e H o ly T r i n i t y

This incredible church spans over 125 feet long, 52 feet wide, and reaches 61 feet high to the apex of the roof. The church was constructed in Romanesque Revival style, finished in red brick, though it showcases zigzag tracery, which was highly unique to the style at the time. The stained glass windows may be the main draw – there are 26. They were given as memorials and six of them were created by Tiffany Studios in New York under the supervision of Louis Comfort Tiffany. Approximate time: 15 45 Minutes

Now a National Historic Landmark, construction for this colossal courthouse began in 1858 and was completed in just two years in 1860 for $100,000. It survived Union shelling, a direct hit from a tornado in 1953, and is now home to the largest collection of Vicksburg’s history. The museum is filled with countless artifacts, including confederate flags, portraits, the trophy antlers won by steamboat Robert E. Lee in an 1870 race, an original Teddy Bear given by Theodore Roosevelt, and many more! Approximate time: 30 Minutes - 1.5 Hours

A n c h u ca M a n s i o n

The word Anchuca derives from an Indian word meaning, “happy home,” which is the exact vibe this home gives off. Built in 1830 by politician J.W. Mauldin, Anchuca is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During the war, the house was used as a shelter for those who had suffered. Tour the home and its beautiful furnishings. Approximate time: 15 - 45 Minutes

At the Biedenharn Coca-Cola Museum, enjoy the wide variety of Coca-ColaTM memorabilia in an authentic candy store and soda fountain setting. This building is where Coca-ColaTM was bottled for the first time anywhere in the world in 1894. Approximate time: 30 Minutes

Named after Admiral Isaac C. Kidd, who died on the bridge of his flagship during Pearl Harbor, the USS Kidd has received eight battle stars for WWII service and four battle stars for Korean War service. This 2,050-ton, 376-foot-long vessel has since been converted into a museum, with exhibits of extensive collections of war artifacts, ship models, memorial hall, real fighter planes and bombers, and memorials. The building, of stucco Georgian construction, is reported to be a copy of the White House as it was originally designed by James Hoban. In the 1940s and 1950s, blues music became extremely popular and Helena was the center of it all. King Biscuit Time is the longest running blues radio show in the entire country and it has served as an inspiration for many famous musicians. The show started in 1941 and was the only radio show in the entire country to feature African American musicians. The year it began, a group of African American blues musicians were given one hour on the radio on the condition that they sign a sponsor, which King Biscuit Flour agreed to do.

Hebrew Union Temple This guided, extensive museum about Hebrew history was built in 1906. Located in front of the temple is an original carriage stone - used for passengers as they climbed in and out of horse-drawn carriages in the 19th and early- 20th centuries. 1927 Flood Museum

This is the third courthouse to be used by the country. The first courthouse was burned down by Union troops during the Civil War. It was replaced by a second structure that was used until the present courthouse was erected in 1890, made up of primarily Illinois brownstone. The front of the building showcases the Confederate Monument which faces south – like many do in Mississippi. “Guests will be greeted by an expert on the history of this beautiful courthouse.” Approximate time: 15 - 30 Minutes

E . E . B a s s C u lt u r a l A r t s The E.E. Bass Cultural Arts Center is home to the Armitage Herschell Carousel. This carousel was created in 1901 and is the oldest fully functioning Armitage carousel today. Mississippi at that time was still legally segregated, many people approached the owner about having separate nights for carousel rides, but the owner refused, he wished for everyone to ride together. Take a ride on this amazing machine and hear the whistle blow and travel back in time. Approximate time: 15 - 30 Minutes

This fine Gothic Revival Church, erected in 1907, is the second building of this parish. It was designed and financed by Father P.J. Korstenbroek, who served at the church for 33 years and was memorialized in William Alexander Percy’s “Lanterns on the Levee”. Many of the stained-glass windows came from the Munich studios of Emi Frei. Approximate time: 30 Minutes - 1 Hour

William Johnson was known as the “Barber of Natchez”; he began as a slave and gained his freedom at age eleven. After his freedom, he began to work his way up in society, eventually becoming almost fully accepted within society. His 3-story brick home was built in 1840 and showcases many original furnishings. This Greek Revival Mansion was built in 1858. The house was built before the breakout of the Civil War in town but did suffer some damage – a cannon ball was launched into their kitchen! It is now fully restored – the main floor offers a showcase of many antiques and furnishings and the upper floors offer a costume collection located in the Historic Clothing Museum. By building their settlements on the Fourth Chickasaw Bluff, it protected them from flooding, and the mighty river allowed them easy transportation access. When the explorer Hernando DeSoto and his army arrived in Memphis in 1541, they set up camp and the city of Memphis exchanged hands with the Spanish, French and English eventually being sold to the U.S Government. Backstage Pass to Memphis Post-Cruise Tour On today’s excursion, we’ll get a glimpse behind the curtain to experience a side of Memphis few tourists ever see, on an exclusive sightseeing experience. We begin with a narrated driving Memphis city tour, passing some of the most iconic sites and attractions, but on today’s special behind-the-scenes tour, we will also make our way to some of the less flashy attractions in town! Our rivercoach will come to a stop in front of the Peabody Hotel, where we will embark on an private experience, guided by the Duck Master himself ! Explore some of the most historic and interesting areas of the hotel before concluding in a specially reserved area to watch the famous Peabody Duck March first hand! Our day begins as we depart the vessel and embark on a one-hour driving tour of the city of Memphis, complete with narration by a local guide with deep, personal knowledge of the city. We’ll cruise the city in style on one of our luxury rivercoaches, as we view sites made famous by blues greats.

Once our driving tour is over we’ll come to a stop at the Peabody Hotel, home to one of the city’s quirkier traditions: the “Peabody Ducks.” Prior to witnessing the event for ourselves, we’ll enjoy a short film chronicling the history of the Peabody Hotel. To u r o f t h e P ea b o dy We’ll then be greeted by the “Duckmaster,” who will become our personal tour guide. Our tour, will include visits to the Grand Lobby, the Duck Palace, the Skyway and Plantation Roof, and the Pastry Kitchen, where each guest will receive a delicious Peabody duck cookie. The guided tour concludes in the Memorabilia Room where guests can explore the Peabody’s impressive collection of artifacts. Then, we will make our way to a special, reserved section of the mezzanine for front-row access to the famous Peabody Duck March!
