Embark on a short ferry ride from Cozumel to the mainland for a day filled with ancient adventure. Travel to the Dzibilchaltún Ruins, an ancient Mayan archaeological site like no other. During your visit, you will discover how Dzibilchaltún differs from its counterparts such as Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, and Ek Balam. You will not see towering structures or gargantuan pyramids, but rather the remains of a quaint, intelligent society and an unprecedented combination of cultures. GET A GLIMPSE INTO MAYAN ASTRONOMICAL EXPERTISE

Follow your local guide through the ruins and discover the intricacies of the structures that remain. At the Temple of the Seven Dolls, gain an understanding of the Mayans’ fascination with, and expertise in astronomy. EXPLORE REMNANTS OF A CULTURAL COLLISION

An ancient roadway will lead you from the Temple of the Seven Dolls to the building referred to as the Open Chapel. In the 16th century, the colonizing Spanish arrived at Dzibilchaltún. Like other colonial structures in the ruins, this Franciscan church was created with the remnants of destroyed Mayan buildings but clearly belonged to a society that succeeded the original inhabitants. CASA DE LOS VENADOS

Visit this private home-turned-museum owned by husband and wife, John and Dorianne Venator. After retiring from their careers, the Venators found a new home in Valladolid. The Venators were already avid collectors of Mexican folk art, and after nearly a decade of remodeling, they moved their collection into their new house. Since then, the collection has grown to over 3,000 pieces and the home has been opened to visitors to appreciate the magnificent works of art.

CONVENT OF SAN BERNADINO

Explore one of the oldest colonial buildings in the Yucatán Peninsula. This 16th century Franciscan convent served as the group’s first religious center in Valladolid. The dense fortress-like structure served multiple purposes – including the imprisonment of pirates! The Spanish settlers would bring Mayan descendants here to convert them to Christianity. In the 1970s a new mystery was unearthed during a restoration of the building. Underneath a newer wooden painting, a set of 16th century frescos were discovered. To this day, it is unclear what artist painted the works and why they were hidden from view.

Venture into one of Mexico’s ancient Mayan ruins, Chichén Itzá. Chichén Itzá dates to 400-500 A.D., its establishment in close proximity to a cenote helped the city to flourish. TEMPLE OF KUKULCÁN

Chichén Itzá is one of the most widely recognized Mayan archaeological sites in Yucatán. The ancient city is well-known for its incredible pyramid of Kukulcán. This four-sided pyramid stands at nearly 100 feet tall with the rectangular temple that rests at the top of the structure. The Temple is yet another example of the Mayan’s sophisticated blend of astronomy and architecture. Each year during the Spring and Fall Equinox the sun projects a shadow on the steps of the pyramid, creating the illusion of a slithering serpent.

POK-A-TOK GREAT BALL COURT

Visit the court where an ancient ball game, Pok-A-Tok was played. While the rules of the contest are not completely known, historians have inferred from images left on monuments that the ball was only moved across the court with the hips and thighs. Based on the ruins left behind, it is believed that this “game” was closer to a spiritual ritual than a modern-day sport.

THE TEMPLE OF THE WARRIORS

EXPLORING EK BALAM HIGHLIGHTS EXPLORE THE REMNANTS OF THE ANCIENT SOCIETY

Just outside the bustling colonial city of Valladolid rests the ancient Ek Balam ruins. The city once covered nearly seven square miles, but today only one has been completely excavated. Explore the grounds and feel the remnants of the ancient society echoed through the myriad of stunning structures, standing in the shadow of El Torre, one of the largest Mayan buildings in the Yucatán. With a stature over 90 feet tall, El Torre – or, “The Tower” serves as the tomb of Ek Balam’s ruler, and features intricate carvings and statues throughout.

The artistic integrity of Ek Balam clearly sets it apart from the other nearby ruins.
