IGNITE YOUR CURIOSITY
Travel outside the city streets of modern-day Campeche to a city that has been long abandoned. Roam through the Mayan archaeological site in Edzná Valley and allow the traces of this once-great civilization to ignite your curiosity. Edzná is widely considered one of the most intriguing Mayan cities due to the technology that lies within its ruins, which was extremely advanced for the time period.
ADMIRE INCREDIBLE ANCIENT STRUCTURES
The word “Edzná” means “House of the Itzás.” This, coupled with the similarities in architecture and layout, have led historians to deduce that the Edzná ruins were influenced by the Itzá Mayans, who constructed the famed Chichén Itzá pyramid. At its height, the Mayan city was populated by as many as 25,000 people. As you are led through the ancient city, revere the incredible structures from the Temple of the Masks, to the Grand Acropolis, and even the ball court, where spectators and athletes would gather for sport.
EXPLORE THE PYRAMID OF FIVE STORIES
The community that occupied Edzná thrived on agriculture. Through the city’s excavation, it was discovered that the citizens had constructed an advanced hydraulic system, which was utilized in the irrigation process. You will notice the numerous structures on the grounds, but most notable is the Pyramid of Five Stories, a structure standing over 100 feet tall with a small temple at its peak. Those who are willing to climb the staircase to the second floor can enjoy an outstanding view of the surrounding area. Uncover the civilization’s culture, sophistication, and technologies as we explore the Mayan world of Edzná.

GET A GLIMPSE INTO MAYAN ASTRONOMICAL EXPERTISE
Follow your local guide through the ruins and discover the intricacies of the structures that remain. At the Temple of the Seven Dolls, gain an understanding of the Mayans’ fascination with, and expertise in astronomy. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the temple is its deliberate and wellthought-out construction. During the Fall and Spring Equinox, the sun rises directly through the doorways at the peak of the temple, creating an aweinspiring effect. Each year on these two days, the glowing temple signified the start and end of the Mayan’s harvest cycle.
EXPLORE REMNANTS OF A CULTURAL COLLISION
An ancient roadway will lead you from the Temple of the Seven Dolls to the building referred to as the Open Chapel. In the 16th century, the colonizing Spanish arrived at Dzibilchaltún. Like other colonial structures in the ruins, this Franciscan church was created with the remnants of destroyed Mayan buildings but clearly belonged to a society that succeeded the original inhabitants. As evidence of the fall of the Mayans and the rise of the Spanish in Mexico, this structure helps to paint the full historical picture of Dzibilchaltún in your mind.

The Temple is yet another example of the Mayan’s sophisticated blend of astronomy and architecture. Each year during the Spring and Fall Equinox the sun projects a shadow on the steps of the pyramid, creating the illusion of a slithering serpent.
POK-A-TOK GREAT BALL COURT
Visit the court where an ancient ball game, Pok-A-Tok was played. While the rules of the contest are not completely known, historians have inferred from images left on monuments that the ball was only moved across the court with the hips and thighs. Based on the ruins left behind, it is believed that this “game” was closer to a spiritual ritual than a modern-day sport.
THE TEMPLE OF THE WARRIORS
This massive temple is one of the most impressive structures on the Chichén Itzá archaeological site. Its spacious platforms would have allowed for mass gatherings to occur here. At the peak of the temple, columns designed as snakes stand adorned with carvings of astronomical symbolism.

Valladolid Premium Experience
EXPLORING EK BALAM HIGHLIGHTS EXPLORE THE REMNANTS OF THE ANCIENT SOCIETY
Just outside the bustling colonial city of Valladolid rests the ancient Ek Balam ruins. The city once covered nearly seven square miles, but today only one has been completely excavated. Explore the grounds and feel the remnants of the ancient society echoed through the myriad of stunning structures, standing in the shadow of El Torre, one of the largest Mayan buildings in the Yucatán. With a stature over 90 feet tall, El Torre – or, “The Tower” serves as the tomb of Ek Balam’s ruler, and features intricate carvings and statues throughout.
ADMIRE ANCIENT ART
The artistic integrity of Ek Balam clearly sets it apart from the other nearby ruins. The stunning carvings that adorn the temples and other structures are not simply carved in stone, but rather molded out of a more flexible material. These elements allowed the architects and artists to create quite intricate facades and statues
