LECONTE GLACIER BY JET BOAT

HIGHLIGHTS

ENTER THE FJORD THAT HOLDS THE LECONTE GLACIER

Embark on a jet boat journey to LeConte Glacier, North America’s southernmost tidewater glacier. Glide across the crystal blue water, soaking in the stunning mountains and soaring birds as your captain leads you to the fjord.

WITNESS THE WONDROUS ICY TERRAIN

Traverse the icy terrain filled with floating icebergs, making your way to the massive glacier ahead. LeConte is an extremely active glacier, known for its heavy calving. The glacier loses much of its ice below the surface, the density of the chunks of ice contrast with that of the water, causing the frozen slabs to quickly surface.

LOOK OUT FOR FURRY FRIENDS

But don’t be mistaken by LeConte’s bleak, icy surface. The area is teeming with wildlife. Specifically, harbor seals and their pups! The seals frequently use the area to give birth and raise their pups. So keep a keen eye out for our furry friends relaxing on the floating ice!

Petersburg Premium Experience TRADITIONAL GARNET MINE EXPERIENCE

HIGHLIGHTS

JOURNEY TO THE HISTORIC GARNET CLAIM

Head out to a historic Garnet claim on US Forest Service land. Garnets are small crystals formed in the rocks along Alaskan mountains over 90 million years. The crystals vary in size and are famous for their deep ruby red color. While they are not the same quality of gemstones, the crystals have long been a piece of Alaskan culture. Since their discovery in the 1800’s the mining of garnets has become a tradition among local families, specifically children who collect the crystals to sell in local shops.

SEARCH FOR GARNETS!

Grab your tools and buckets as you’re lead through the old-growth and recently forested areas to search for garnets of your own! Enjoy the fun of this longstanding local tradition, break open rocks and search for signs of red. Keep any of the treasures you find as the ultimate souvenir of your time in Petersburg! Don’t worry, the garnets are plentiful, and you are guaranteed to find some during your search.
