How it all started...
In 1998, Singapore experienced an economic downturn, which caused considerable difficulties for many Indian families. Some members of the community who were keen to help others who were affected financially during this period approached SINDA. SINDA then set up booths and other collection centres to solicit donations in cash and kind. Since then, SINDA has made this an annual event, which takes place during the Deepavali festive season. In 2001, we began to call this communitywide effort Project Give. This year it has evolved to include more than a thousand beneficiaries celebrating Hari Raya, Deepavali and Christmas. Today, what started out as a small-scale mission is reaping huge support and recognition from the community.

A teacher-in-the-making Intelligent, determined, focused and only seven years old. This is Shantiny Ulaganathan. At such a tender age, Shantiny comes across as an extremely responsible and reliable child. She calls herself a “teacherin-the-making” because that is what she wants to be when she grows up. Shantiny’s father, the sole breadwinner, works as a security guard. With his salary he was barely able to make ends meet and found it difficult to finance his daughters’ education. Through SINDA’s assistance, his children received bursaries and also full waiver on tuition fees for SINDA’s Tutorials for Enhanced Performance (STEP).
From left: Shantiny, Harini and their mother Mrs. Kavitha Ulaganathan
Like Shantiny and her sister, there are many students who require that extra help with their education. Your contributions can help many children like them realise their dreams.
Project Give donations go towards bursaries for students and food hampers. Cash donations from last year’s Project Give and proceeds from 40 other Indian organisations were disbursed as bursaries to 1,600 students this year to a tune of $560,000. We hope to disburse bursaries to about 2,000 students next year. Bursary Award recipients seen here with Dr. Balaji Sadasivan and Mr. S. Manogaran

All round excellence 14-year-old Rabiah Begum successfully juggles her time between striving for academic excellence and being a committed member of her school’s netball team. Family members describe her as a respectful child. She has two older sisters and a younger brother. Her father Mr. Musa Angullia, 47, a salesman, is the sole breadwinner and her mother, Mdm. Fameeda, 47, is a housewife. The family is very supportive of the children’s educational progress. Rabiah, a Secondary 3 student in Yio Chu Kang Secondary School was one of the top 10 students of her cohort in last year’s final examinations. The donations received through Project Give and SINDA’s partnership with other Indian organisations enabled Rabiah to receive the Indian Community Bursary Award earlier this year at a ceremony organised by SINDA.

Rabiah’s mother attributes her daughter’s good academic performance to SINDA’s STEP lessons.
All smiles for this Hari Raya...
“Hope is the hand that guides when you are in need.” Mr. Abdul Nazar and his family are one of more than 250 Indian Muslim families who have already benefited from this year’s Project Give. Mr. Nazar was delighted to receive a food hamper and food rations from SINDA just before Hari Raya. Mr. Nazar and his family have faced very difficult times and are thankful to SINDA for helping them celebrate Hari Raya. Mr. Nazar has been in and out of jobs since he was retrenched in 2001. Due to medical reasons he has been unable to stay in any job for long and has found it difficult to support his homemaker wife and two young children. Mr. Nazar’s elder daughter is also a SINDA bursary recipient and Mr. Nazar is grateful that help came his way when he most needed it. Recently, Mr. Nazar started work as a cleaner and he says, “the pay is low, but I’m very satisfied and happy”.
Mr. Abdul Nazar with his 2 daughters
Like Mr. Abdul Nazar’s family, SINDA also hopes to spread the festive cheer to families in need by distributing food rations to them. You can do your part during this festive period and reach out to needy families with donations in kind and cash.

Hard work and determination paid off Anandavalli married at a young age and was a home maker and highly dependent on her husband. When the couple divorced, Anandavalli was left to fend for her 3 young children, with no money, no job and no formal education or training.
“Life can either be accepted or changed. If it is not accepted, it must be changed. If it cannot be changed, then it must be accepted.”
It was at this low-point in her life that Anandavalli approached SINDA for financial assistance. With her children’s educational and childcare needs looked after through bursaries and other forms of help, Anandavalli started to take up odd jobs. Thereafter, she found a permanent job as a Hospital Porter and is doing much better than she was three years ago. Currently, she’s renting a room in her sister’s home. Anandavalli hopes to purchase a 3-room flat soon, after which she says that, “everything will fall into place. I believe that strongly”. SINDA believed in Anandavalli and has offered its helping hand wherever possible. Now we appeal to you to come forward to help many such families in the community.

This year, Standard Chartered Bank has come forward to support Project Give by sponsoring cardboard coin boxes. The boxes were made by Bizlink Centre’s sheltered workshop members. The sheltered workshops empower disabled people to pick up skills that would enable them to earn a living through simple jobs and lead sustainable lives in spite of their disabilities. The coin boxes are given as tokens of appreciation to those who donate to Project Give at SINDA’s Campbell Lane Project Give booth. In total, 5,000 boxes will be given out during Project Give.
