Publisher’s View The Color of the SKY in My World It’s all colours, really. As many colours as there are rainbows. As many hues as their are shades. There are as many colours as there are possibilities, and as many possibilities as there are dreams. Summer is the time for dreaming and exploring under the expansive, ever changing sky.

Producing SKY Magazine is more like following the sky as it literally takes on a life of its own with each and every contributor. Now my third issue since becoming the new publisher, I have noticed a common thread among the people of these pages: what they imagine, becomes; what they believe, manifests; what they intend, they do.
You will want to shop all day and dine out under the stars. You will get new home fever. You will look at fashion and local design from a new perspective. You will dare to wish and dream to be. You will want a really big sign, and yes, you will need air conditioning as the temperature rises this summer. There are never enough pages to tell you all that I would love to say about the people I meet in creating SKY. And that’s why there will always be another SKY. Have a fabulous summer and see you in the fall.

Horse Sense: Summer Message
A Horse Loving Prairie Accountant’s Perspective By Lorelei R. Johns, C.A.
Life is about making memories with those who enrich our lives and help us to accomplish our goals. I enjoy working with non-profits as their Chartered Accountant. Together, we have travelled the journey of accounting, auditing, assurance and governance. Life is a balance of doing the things I love to do and spending time with my friends and family who feeds my soul. My family continues to inspire my way ahead, as does my friend Red, a 5 year-old 590 kilogram gelding who, at times, challenges me and teaches me about building relationships and being the kind of person that I aspire to be. Since Red and I began this journey together, we have learned from each
other. There have been days when, despite my best intentions to spend time with Red, other things got in the way, like the weather and other commitments. When Red and I are able to spend time together, I learn that having a mutually successful relationship takes time, energy, and sacrifice.

Raw without the thaw!
It’s summer time, and I am looking forward to hitting the trail with my trusty steed Red. We will build some memories and learn from each other no doubt. I hope you are able to spend some time under the sun with those who inspire the way ahead.

High Heels, Hard Hats and Harmony crystal chandelier over her custom-built granite desk says sparkle. Her sequintufted silver velour couch says luxury. Her high heels say style. Her pink hard hat says determination to change the home building industry in Regina. Katrina Stettner’s energy and exuberance explains how this small Regina company is contributing to a strong and thriving housing industry and setting the bar on a different kind of experience. “I like sparkle,” says Katrina, smiling. “We are all about creating beautiful homes that are unique and special. We are a family run business and making families happy is at the core of the Harmony philosophy.” Harmony Builders is owned and operated by husband and wife team, Matt Rogina and Katrina Stettner. They share a passion to build homes with heart and style for all sizes and budgets. “We have been in the housing business in Regina for a number of years, but we realize there is another way to build homes. We believe every home should sparkle, and we believe everyone deserves a place to call home,” says Katrina. Each house is built to the home owner’s standards, from designing the layout of the home to selecting the finishes that create sparkle, luxury and quality.
“We believe every home should sparkle, and we believe everyone deserves a place to call home,” says Katrina
“We’ve heard it many times from our show home visitors and our customers: there is just something a little bit different about a Harmony Home. They tell us there is a style, an elegance, and a sense that there is something special about it”, says Katrina. “We use quality, luxurious material and finishes such as granite, hardwood, and a wide choice of beautiful cabinetry. Our team is experienced and our uncompromising workmanship comes to life in each home. The Harmony strength comes from the heart of the home building process, managed by Matt and a team who builds each home as if it were their own.” “We believe that if you’re going to do something, you should do it right. A home should be thoughtfully planned, designed and crafted with design touches that are pleasing to the eye and make a meaningful and lasting
difference to the way the home feels and functions for the people living in it,” says Matt. “Over our years of experience in designing homes and working with homeowners, we have refined our philosophy, creating a distinct approach to building luxury homes. We have developed a series of thoughtful planning and design details that go into each Harmony Home.” “We call this approach ‘The Measure of Craftsmanship’, because the way we build at Harmony is all about making sure our customers have a quality built home that is right for their family’s needs and lifestyle. Katrina and Matt are known for their personal touch on each and every home they build. Their show homes are personally designed by the Harmony team, drawing inspiration from local character homes, hotel designs they see while travelling and magazines. “We take a custom design approach with our homeowners. They can use an existing plan that they love, or we can tailor our plans to create the home they envision. We can also start from a clean sheet of paper and work with them to design their own home. There is no extra charge to customize or design your own home. At Harmony, we build you the home of your dreams.” “Harmony offers the highest standard of quality at a lower price than you will pay with many other home builders. Since we build a limited amount of homes per year, it translates into better service and better management of resources. When we build your house, we promise that you will be satisfied and that you and your loved ones will live in harmony in your new home,” says Katrina. “The day we walk through the house with our homeowners is hands down the best day of all. The whole team comes together, and we celebrate the beginning of their lives in their new home with champagne. There are tears each time. It’s such a joyful experience to make someone’s dream of a new home a reality.”

The Designer’s “I want to empower women. I want people to be afraid of the women I dress”. Alexander McQueen
“The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud” Coco Chanel
Muse he is a carefully crafted master piece, a story of a time and place, the embodiment of inspiration borne out of her creator’s wishes, dreams, desires and values. She is the muse brought to life in fabric, leathers, plastic and furs, for this moment on this runway. As she approaches the edge of the runway, she pauses, turns and walks away, never to be seen again in this way. I wished she would stay a little longer. I wanted to understand her and how she came to be.
Dean Renwick designed the Saskatchewan Fashion Week muse. “She is inspired by the blue skies and the golden fields of Saskatchewan. Her blue bustier and toile skirt, reminiscent of the elaborate Rococo style of the early 18th century, are worn over gold brocade ‘Martini Pants’, a style that was popular for entertaining guests in the 1950’s. I was also inspired by Keira Knightley’s performance in Anna Karenina, the classic story of doomed love.” deanrenwickdesignstudio.com
Lisa Wicklund, Seed: “The fall/winter collection is composed of more than 50 individual pieces which make up 24 outfits in total. With nuances of romanticism, sci-fi, bondage, and a fairytale daydream, it’s a collection quite unlike any before it. Various movements in fashion inspire my collection, with a kind of casual luxury being the common link. The plaid coat dress with detachable bustle was my love letter to the memory of Alexander McQueen, the king of honest, individual design.” seedsustainablestyle.com Sonja Clifton-Remple, S: “I spend a lot of time thinking about the many things that happen in a woman’s daily life, envisioning a busy working woman who loves styles for work and other occasions. She enjoys classic, easy fits in luxe, interesting fabrics that are comfortable to wear and to the touch.” sonjacliftonremple.com Sara Armstrong, Sara Armstrong: “My muse is someone who has a pulse on and is influenced by international style. He / she doesn’t look to others or magazines for their fashion clues. They are unique, urban people who shop for purpose, quality and luxury. They are trendsetters. I’m not interested in feeding ‘popular trends’. Designing is about innovation so show me something different.” sararmstrong.com Rea Harbus, Amaranth Designs: “I was inspired by some of the designs that were popular in the 70’s, such as my pant jumper and culotte’s jumpsuit as well as my 70’s pantsuit. I selected fabrics in neutral tones, charcoal grey, beige, blacks and creams. I used a nature photo fabric for a bit of colour and a black with gold metallic for my evening pieces. The gold sequin evening dress was a bit out of my comfort zone as I am very conservative with my designs. I believe it complimented my collection.” www.amaranthdesigns.ca Pamela WaldNER, Anwen Rose: “I take a lot of inspiration from our natural world, but I also have a fascination with fairy tales. I find myself daydreaming quite often about lush forests with grand trees, beautiful plants and mythical creatures. It’s a vision that fuels my creativity and fills my imagination with possibilities.” anwenrose.com Beryl Wong, Beryl Wong Designs: “My autumn / winter 2013 collection was inspired by the movie ‘In the Mood for Love’, a film set in Hong Kong in the 1960’s. I was inspired by both the costuming and the melancholy mood of the movie. Using luxe fabrics, such as silk chiffon, brocade, duchesse satin, and recycled leather, I wanted to bring elements of the quintessential Chinese dress, the cheong sam, into modern designs.“ Facebook| BerylWong-Designs Sheri Stasiuk-Sopczak, Chicks & Girlies: “I see leather, touch it and I get a flash of a small piece of an idea. I never have a set idea of what kind of bag I am creating until it is finished. I pick up other colours or the paints and add them in. At the time it seems a little reckless but it all makes sense in the end! I am just as excited to see what it will be! chicksandgirlies.ca Rachel Mielke, Hillberg & Berk: “Fine jewellery created from silver, gold, and semiprecious stones infuses timeless design with intrepid detail. The spring/summer 2013 collection shown at SFW was inspired by the potential for beauty in every day, capitalizing on healing properties inherent in different gemstones and combining them to create interesting, contemporary palettes, for a physically and emotionally transformative effect.” hillbergandberk.com Ester Knight, Moonstar Designs: “I love creating dresses for young girls as it really builds their confidence when they finally get a dress that fits and looks beautiful, regardless of how their body is developing and their specific shape.” moonstardesigns.yolasite.com Sara Bayley, The Unified Theory: “In this collection I used some rare leathers such as ostrich, and furs such as wolf, goat and sheep. For jewellery I used bear tooth, authentic arrowhead, semi precious stones, copper and steel. I incorporated quartz pieces as buttons and silkscreened Marino wool. The prints were bold and animal of course. I wanted the clothes to have a warrior feel but with softer flowing lines. Most pieces were a combination of a fitted top representing armour and a gentle feminine counterpart on the bottom.” theunifiedtheory.ca Kandis Miller, Kandis Ivy Fashion Design: “My muse is the woman who walks into a room and is the life of the party. Her smile and laugh, her ease and confidence attract everyone’s attention. The trends of the past and the women who fearlessly paved the way inspire a vintage feel to the collection. The strong women in my life inspire me, with their sense of fun and adventure woven into each beautiful piece.” kandisivy.com Riley Lawson, Riley Lawson: “My collection was inspired by living a natural life. I wanted to use natural dyes and experiment with vegan leather. Most of all, I wanted it to be completely interchangeable so that each piece could be worn with other items in your closet easily.” rileylawson.com RosanNa Jamilano Shavron, Jamilano Fashion: “It is my goal for women to exhibit the feelings of being sophisticated, sexy and trendy in their everyday professional career in the outfits that I’ve designed as they “rock it” in the boardroom.” jamilano.com We would like to recognize Chic Eleganzia, Laurie Brown, Helen Anne Designs, Jaycee Wall, Katherine Sthamann, Kazz Clothing, Mehari Clothing, Nadia Williamson, Pedraigin, Savoire Faire, Custom Bouquets, Sova, Tia Zelinski, and 22 Fresh for also sharing your vision and entrepreneurship with us during Saskatchewan Fashion Week. Staying fit. Older adults should exercise 30-60 minutes a day, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada. That doesn’t have to mean intensive cardio workouts, but could include taking the stairs instead of the elevator. (Talk to your doctor before starting any new physical activity regime.) Finding work/life balance. Many people approaching retirement find that their work is their life. If this sounds like you, take transition steps before abruptly stopping work. Begin to transfer responsibilities several months or even years in advance, or move toward part-time or consulting roles. Establishing a timeline. It’s difficult to plan how many years you will be enjoying your retirement, but many studies show that Canadians are living longer than before, and affluent Canadians longer than average. Where does one go to obtain a 4 x 8 foot white frosted vinyl adhesive sign that says “SKY” to cover the glass walls in my office? “The sky is the limit”, says Dennis Ermel, CEO of PrintWest / Mister Print. “We just got bigger and better.”
By Lynn Armstrong
PrintWest/ Mister Print can bring almost any surface to life in a big way. The Saskatchewan based company operating in Regina and Saskatoon has recently acquired a high resolution, wide format printer with white ink and varnish options suitable for indoor and outdoor projects. “Our wide format printer can produce images on just about anything flat up to two inches thick,” explains Murray Timm, Mister Print Operations Manager in Saskatoon where the printer is located. The possibilities are endless: foam core, coreoplast, vinyl banners, clear / frosted backlit film, any colour styrene, dibond, vehicle window perf, metal and acrylic, glass, mirror, vinyl, leather, paper, cardboard, carpet and vinyl flooring. “Just recently, we printed a 15 foot double sided banner to mark the start and finish line for Mayor Fougere’s first annual ‘Mayor’s Run/Walk for Fitness’ in Regina on June 9. We also created large format signage for the Juno Awards.” A file is transferred to the machine digitally. White ink allows the plotter to print on dark coloured stock. The ink can be applied over an entire background or used just behind other colours. Varnish can be used to highlight certain areas of print, giving a glossy, raised finish on a smooth surface. It can be printed over colours or simply used on its own for a dramatic and creative look. The new printer can print flat material up to 96.4” x 49.2” as well as rolled materials up to 86.6” wide. “In addition to large format printing, we serve the short run sheet-fed business and medium runs and our web press can do printing runs. Digital printing on the iGen4 has evolved allowing us to create very sharp imagery. Printing with white ink and varnish is an example of the expanded technology, ” says Ken Benson, Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “There will always be a place for printing tangible products, such as signage, magazines, pop up banners, coasters, folders, books and other types of publications.“
“We invest in new technologies and new ways of printing so that we can continue to meet our customer’s needs, both in terms of creating beautiful products, and ensuring we are operating as efficiently and effectively as possible so that we be competitive in the marketplace. The strength and expertise of the sales and production teams makes the difference.” “Our sales staff and customer service representatives work to understand our customer’s needs, their businesses, who their customers are, what they want to see, and how the product will be used. Our staff are experts in the printing industry and they understand colour like none other, so they guide the process from the customer’s perspective as well from a production perspective.” “We educate and facilitate our customers to help them make the best investment with their printing dollars. Our newest representative, Portia Nichol, specializes in our wide format printing. We are excited about offering wide format printing to our clients, ” adds Dennis. “We are growing and we will continue to be bigger and better as we meet our customer’s needs. Customer demand, quality, excellent employees and the most efficient use of resources drive our business success. Our turnaround times are within days. Our customer’s continue to be interested in creative signage, and other printed products that represent them well and attract positive attention.” “Whether we are printing a 4 x 8 foot sign or a business card, our customers understand that they can rely on us.” “We come to work every day to be seen as the high quality printer that creates quality results. Reliability is highly important to us.” “Our goal is for our customer to love the finished product and to feel proud in sharing it with their customers.” Regina Sales Office 1111 8th Avenue Regina 306.525.2304 sales@printwest.com www.printwest.com Saskatoon Sales Office 619 8th Street Saskatoon 306.934.7575 sales@misterprint.com

Creating Lasting Memories since 1925
Treasures by Ruth Pradzynski
A few nights ago, I dreamt that I was walking through a farmer’s field, when I came to an area where the land had subsided, leaving a cave in the earth. Looking into the cave, I could see an underground river, teeming with fish. The bodies of the fish flashed silver as they swam over and above each other, so thick that you could almost walk on the water, across the fish. A voice said to me, “What a treasure this is! Be careful not to over-fish.” I woke up, with a strong sense that this was a significant dream; one that needed to be remembered. The Grand Banks of Newfoundland used to have cod this thick. Millions, multiplied billions of cod – so thick you could almost walk on the water across their bodies. It was one of the natural wonders of the world. But we took it for granted. We overfished; we allowed the fishing fleets of the world to over-fish. The cod stocks collapsed, and have never recovered. A natural treasure of our nation is gone. What are the treasures of Canada that we take for granted? Our families, the natural beauty of that surrounds us, fresh water, our health, the ability to work and earn an income, and the fact that we enjoy a democratic government that allows us both personal and economic freedom are some that come to mind. Not everyone has such blessings. There are nations in the world where water is neither abundant nor clean; where the opportunities we take for granted such as free education and medical care are nothing more than a dream.

We enjoy a justice and banking system that is trustworthy and largely free from corruption. Yes, we tell lawyer jokes, but imagine living in a country where there could be no possible redress if a neighbour cheated one. Where it goes as a matter of course that the police would beat, imprison, or even kill you if you dared to raise a concern. Where everyone keeps their money under a mattress, because if you put it in the bank, you’ll never see it again. Let us hold these treasures with both appreciation, and great care, lest our casual assumptions that they will always be there, leads to their loss. Ruth Pradzynski A.R.E. The Power
of a Wish Halle has a wish. At 13 years of age, her wish is so big, it’s possible that it will transcend all other wishes she’s ever had. She loves fashion, makeup, shoes and travel. The sky’s the limit for Halle because she lives in possibility like most 13 year-old girls. Halle was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease when she was seven years old. She has endured two surgeries, one in Regina and one in Calgary, along with several separate hospitalizations, and countless outpatient procedures. Halle needs ongoing medication to help control the Crohn’s Disease and finding the right mix was a very big challenge, explains her mom, Heather. “When she gets sick, her entire world stops”, says Heather. “Sometimes, I would just watch the kids outside playing and I wish Halle could just be a child and not have to endure the pain of this disease.” “Just last winter Halle’s weight was down to 50 pounds. She is doing very well now, and looking forward to graduation from grade eight and starting high school with her twin brother.” Halle is just one of the thousands of children each year with a life threatening illness and who dare to wish. Since 1984, The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada has worked tirelessly to grant exceptional wishes to 19,000 children between the ages of three and 17 and their families. This year, the Saskatchewan Chapter expects to grant 60 new wishes. “We have never refused a wish to an eligible child. With the help of volunteers and generous donors, we are able to grant one wish per week. Each wish is an individual adventure, carefully structured to meet the needs of the child and family. The Foundation has chapters in every province and territory,” says Gay Oldhaver, Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Chapter. “Granting a wish for the children is a symbol of hope and healing, “ says Deanne Guest, Fundraising Co-ordinator in Regina. “We want the people of Saskatchewan to know that there are children’s wishes to be granted and that we are asking for your help by participating in the Wishmaker Walk for Wishes on September 22, 2013 and Regina Exhile Island Event in 2014. We will be sharing the story of our wish children in SKY Magazine each quarter with the help of sponsors from the business community like HK Insurance, SGI and SKY Magazine. Please get involved and help make a child’s wish come true.” The Saskatchewan Chapter has offices in Saskatoon and Regina. LIVING WELL IN SASKATCHEWAN
Doing Business by Cloud Checks’n’Balances adopted cloud technology in 2009 so that we could become more efficient. We soon saw the benefits and began offering this service to our clients for bookkeeping and payroll. If you are considering adopting cloud based computing, here are some things we have learned. B y L ana She ppard
·
Cloud computing is the ability to run computer applications over the Internet, without having to buy, install or manage your own servers. You can have your company’s IT operations with nothing more than an Internet connection.
·
You can significantly lower business costs and increase flexibility. No more weekends, late nights doing upgrades or rebuilding computers because one has crashed! Everything takes place in the cloud and is managed by your vendor.
· There is no need to purchase network computers, hire IT support, and worry about upgrades and maintenance. Upfront costs are low. It’s a pay as you go system. · Clients have access to their financial information and real time collaboration with your office 24 hours a day, seven days a week. · Information security is a huge concern. We chose a local provider. Our data is not transmitted to offshore locations or server farms in other parts of North America. Our information stays in Saskatoon and we like it that way. We also have disaster recovery with seven full daily backups and eight weekly backups. · Adopting the system is easy. You can be set up and running in a few hours or a few days dependant on the size of your operation and the demands of your business. · There is no need for on-premise hardware which means a reduction in the overall electrical requirements. Cloud computing allows you to focus on your business rather than on your software and IT resource requirements.
