SPECIAL PROJECTS SERVICE

COLD WEATHER PACKS

SPECIAL PROJECTS SERVICE

At MYSTERY RANCH, we solve problems for our customers – we work with them to identify a solution that meets their needs. In addition to designing products for ourselves, we regularly work on Special Projects for government and other industry organizations. With our Special Projects Service offering, MYSTERY RANCH designs and manufactures custom products for key customers and strategic opportunities when no other load-carriage solution exists. That includes packaging weapons, comms gear, optics, sensors, connectors, cabling and the list goes on. We have designed built-in systems to carry jammers, receivers, and robots. If it needs to be carried by a human – let’s talk. In many cases, the client comes to our facility to brainstorm a solution with our design team for their load carriage or packaging needs. They show us the equipment we need to design around. In other cases, the client may send us the equipment and then collaborate with us via video conference, phone, or email. When necessary, we travel to the client’s location to work with them directly or see or experience items or factors that cannot be brought to us. The time to generate the alpha prototype will vary once we have established the necessary requirements and inputs.

CONCEPTION. DEVELOPMENT. DESIGN. TEST. PRODUCTION.

CASE STUDY ATM CWF “THE ARCTIC RUCK” TRIED AND TESTED The ATM CWF (All-Terrain Manuveur, Cold Weather First) pack is built on the MYSTERY RANCH Pull frame that was developed specifically for pulling sleds. Extensively field-tested in the Arctic, the pull-frame’s waist belt has pull loops on both sides and built to pull large loads without creating stress points on the body. The yoke has a quick release buckle for times of urgency.

BUILT FOR THE COLD All features were designed with frigid temperatures in mind and for use with gloved or mittened hands. Materials, trims and components were all thoughtfully considered and tested for the extreme cold, down to –60°F, to ensure their resilience and operational functionality in the cold.

CASE STUDY This project was undertaken by MYSTERY RANCH with a request from a northern SOF unit needing an extreme cold-weather specific pack. We followed our Special Projects process of listening to the customer’s needs, developing a concept, designing a prototype, then field testing and revising. This project led us to Norway with personnel from several SOF units, across open fields pulling tires and finally to the high north. Our final prototype went to the Arctic multiple times with MYSTERY RANCH Ambassador and polar explorer John Huston for extensive field testing. With John’s feedback, we dialed in the alpha prototype and delivered to the world the ATM CWF, or as we call it, the ARCTIC RUCK.

MYSTERY RANCH AMBASSADOR & COLLABORATOR

JOHN HUSTON POLAR EXPLORER, COLD-WEATHER EXPERT

John Huston is a professional polar explorer and outdoor educator. He is an expert in a wide range of cold weather-related topics, including clothing and equipment systems, expeditionary leadership, teaching methods, logistics, 24/7 safety and communications. Huston is skilled at relating his expertise to other people’s endeavors and operational contexts. Over the past 10 years, he has been a subject matter expert, trainer, and expeditionary consultant to U.S., Canadian and Norwegian Special Operations Forces units. Huston has completed several major polar expeditions. He brings his creative, thorough, team-focused expeditionary mentality to every project.

CONSULTING Not only does Huston bring his cold-weather product knowledge to the table at MYSTERY RANCH, but he is also the Founder and Lead Instructor of Skadi – a company founded to meet demand from the international SOF community for professional cold-weather expertise. The instructors are veteran cold-weather professionals with extensive backgrounds in leadership and training. The approach is based on the same principles that go into successful cold-weather endeavors: humility, quality of craft, excellence in teaching, rapport, and attention to detail.

I have worked with John Huston on multiple cold-weather training evolutions for US Military Special Operations Forces. The Special Operations Forces students that we have put through his training have all voiced similar feedback, but speaking specifically for myself: I have not seen this level of professional subject matter expertise specifically applied to cold weather in my 26 years in the military and training military forces. John is truly at the top of his game in what is already a small, niche cold-weather training world.

His unique real-world experience in extreme cold weather has been eye-opening for all of us, as it is counter to what we have traditionally learned in previous cold-weather training. John and Skadi have raised the bar and redefined the expectations about what kinds of military missions can realistically be executed in extreme arctic environments.
