Welcome to issue 32 Another year seems to have crept up upon us very quickly with 2014 only just around the corner. The Mystik Way will be in Glastonbury to celebrate a friends hand fasting ceremony & special rituals conducted by myself to accompany the onset of a new yearly cycle. We are combining December/January issues of the magazine as there is so much going on that we are pushed for time & having a few extra days off, but not to worry everything will back to normal for the new yearly cycle (whatever normal is) Whatever path you walk, whichever your belief the most important thing is to follow it fully with total commitment, to live it even in your everyday life. Celebrate fully the festival season by giving as well as receiving, not so much in the monetary sense but by being kind, loving, understanding to all people including all the animals….count your blessings…be thankful for what you have, not what you don’t have. The greatest pleasures are celebrating with loved ones & friends over a feast with fine wines, good conversations with a heart warming fireside enjoying life to the full. Have a magikal festival holiday with many blessings to bring this yearly cycle to a conclusion ready to embark upon the new season. There are certainly many to enjoy…Yule the winter Solstice, Christmas, New years eve & Imbolc at the start of February.

YULETIDE (WINTER SOLSTICE) Preparing an Altar I am not going to give the usual and traditional meanings behind the festival of Yule as this is a subject of much conjecture, many differing myth’s and meanings behind it, I have never been a great one for rules as they are for the guidance of the wise and the obedience of idiots. Instead I propose that you use the items that appeal to you personally. (Traditional meanings, names etc can be found on such sites as Wikipedia) Make your Altar of the very things that are to be found in nature as these will vary according to the hemisphere in which you live! Here in the north use vibrant colours, red candles, holly, ivy and anything you would care to add……spiced incense…. make it an flamboyant Altar to celebrate the ending of the darkness and the slow return of the light….hold a gathering with loved ones and friends with a feast and fine wine and a roaring fire. In the southern hemisphere apply the same idea, use the colours and materials available to you. Spent some time in reflection of those who have gone before, the Ancestors & sending healing thoughts to those that are less fortunate....send prayers of love & protection to the Animal kingdom. Make this a time for giving, not taking. Whatever you belief have a wonderful festive holiday.

WINTER SOLSTICE ( Solar Festival ) 21st/22nd December Of all the Festivals on the wheel of the year, Yule as it was called by the ancients brought the most anxiety and fear. The Sun appeared to have vanished, it was the longest night and the shortest day, it was cold and bleak, the Earth lay dormant, it was a scary time as all were worried would they survive the long & cruel winter months. The crops were gathered in, the animals tethered in barns in preparation for the long winter nights. On the night of the 21st as the sun sank below the horizon they would prepare huge bonfires and prepare a great feast, the entire village would join in....Rituals were performed to honour to the Sun in the hope it would hasten it’s return. After the shortest day and the longest night at the darkest time....the Sun is reborn.....the waxing cycle of the Sun begins again.....the year begins. Much rejoicing and merry making...dancing....chanting....a time for feasting a time for giving, sharing, regeneration and rebirth. The entire population of the village would gather around a hugh fire in the chief’s round house at the coldest & darkest part of the night to perform rituals asking for abundant crops in the coming year. They decorated their homes with Holly, Ivy & Mistletoe, red & green signified abundance...the white of the Mistletoe meant fertility. They would also spend much time remembering the ancestors and paying homage to them, truly a time for all to be together...the living and the dead

Winter has now spread its icy tendrils across southern England & most if not all of the plants, herbs & grapevines have entered into hibernation. One experiment I am trying is that I have brought one of the smaller potted Sage plants indoors to see if it can be kept flourishing over winter, bearing more leaf’s &’flowers to keep the smudge stick supply going. The other main task is transferring the wine from the demi-johns to bottles (there are a few less to do as I have been testing them) The whole process is a wonderful work as
the pleasure of collecting the fruit/flowers & preparing them is a lovely healing exercise, also when drinking knowing that it is completely pure & natural/organic so again there is a great healing benefit even in the drinking. I am now concentrating on my large collection of Aloe Vera plants indoors over winter (see separate article on the health benefits) Have also had the great pleasure of seeing one of them flower, which I am informed is very rare. It has certainly been an interesting learning curve in the first year, a great deal of that benefit has also been in the night time rituals/ chanting & fires under the power of the Moon & not only to the plants but myself.
Have a wonderful Yule & celebrations with many blessings.

Muse’s meanderings & wanderings Illusion of Time…… Time is a strange thing as it can be speeded up or slowed down according to our frame of mind or should I say emotions…interesting as to how we can fool ourselves, we say in our mind “ not enough time to write to article “ & low and behold the Universe responds because that time just vanishes. We then switch on the kettle for a cup of coffee, takes about three minutes so we wait for it & low and behold that three minutes takes forever. Strange thing this Time… If we sit at the roadside & observe the traffic letting our eyes follow a car from left to right keeping our eyes upon it all the time it appears to be travelling very fast, but if we keep our eyes trained straight ahead of us it appears to be moving at a much slower speed. Strange this thing called time. It would seem to appear that by changing our views & thoughts about time we can change its duration, and either way…backwards or forwards. This therefore makes time an illusion, an illusion created by trying to measure & control the sequence of the Universal energies, which ultimately constricts our vision & perception of all the wonderful magical realms that exist alongside of ours all at the same time. I then told myself the kettle took thirty seconds to boil & make my coffee & said the one hour that I had to write the article was really two hours…as if by magik the whole sequence of events of the day changed to my advantage. For a few moments each day enter the realm of just being in a darkened room where there is no perception of time or space then spend a short while just imagining what it would be like somewhere else, being someone else in a different time or era….past of future, you will find it quite enlightening. Time a strange thing indeed.

REGENERATIONS Spiritual Lessons from Doctor Who by James Middleditch “Time can be re-written.” The Doctor
Introduction
The British science-fiction series Doctor Who celebrated its 50th anniversary in November. One explanation for this longevity is its popularity with both children and adults – a rare gift shared by the most cherished fictions through time. Another is that just under the surface of these imaginative adventures in space and time lies a spiritual dimension that touches viewers either consciously or unconsciously.
On the 50th anniversary, a special episode called The Day of the Doctor was broadcast simultaneously in over 90 countries around the world. Appropriately, it brought together many of the central concepts from the series as a whole, and these can be seen as epitomes of the spiritual lessons we can take from it. This article explores three such lessons, and asks what the Doctor can teach us about the nature of time and change. 8 |
MYSTIK WAY MAGAZINE
Lesson 1 – CHANGING THE FUTURE
As a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey, the Doctor has the capacity to ‘regenerate’ when his body becomes too old, or is damaged beyond repair. In a practical sense, this allows the series to continue with different lead actors taking the role every few years, freeing it from an otherwise crippling limitation. In a narrative sense, we get to see the character evolve, as each Doctor is a different iteration of a common heroic core, with different personality traits and habits.
In a spiritual sense, regeneration represents our own capacity for change. Sometimes this change is thrust upon us by external events, and our lives change unexpectedly. We continue, as a variant of who we were before. Around our core, which we could perhaps call our soul, a different personality forms. Even our bodies change as we grow up and grow old; we take on new faces and silhouettes across the decades. For the Doctor it is usually sudden, but this is only an accelerated, science-fiction equivalent of our own changes.
We can also take possession of the change if we wish. The lesson of the Doctor is that we are not fixed. The clay is not baked; it is mouldable, and the hand that moulds it can be our own will. We are only now what we are up to this moment. He asks us to consider what we would like to be in the future. True, our earthly bodies are finite, unlike the fictional Doctor who may stretch untold years into the future; but it is within our capacity to shape our future selves and regenerate into the person we want to be.
Lesson 2 – THE EVER-PRESENT
One of the most beautiful and moving images from the 50th anniversary episode comes right at the end, as we see what the Doctor dreams. The present Doctor walks through mist to join eleven other standing figures, taking his place at the front of a
spearhead arrangement of his past bodies.
We could dream the same dream. Imagine yourself across the years – all the different bodies your soul has inhabited. The number of bodies is up to you. It could be one for every year of your life, or one for every seven, when science tells us our cells have all replaced themselves anyway, making them technically different bodies in reality. See how different they are, and yet how they are unified by common memories and a common soul. This is who you are. The baby, the child, the teenager, the adult all at once. What might you say to them? How might you reassure them? What have you forgotten, that could you learn from them once more?
9
Lesson 3 – CHANGING THE PAST
Until the moment of that dream, the Doctor had been running from his past. A terrible conflict forced him to do terrible things. Unable to find a solution to the devastating Time War, the Doctor wiped out two entire species. The guilt and grief of this led him to repress one of his lives, keeping the memory buried and removing from him the name of ‘the Doctor’.
The 50th anniversary episode is the story of the present Doctor reconciling with this part of himself, and actually changing his own past. With the benefit of several more lifetimes’ experience, he finds an alternative solution to the conflict. He understands why he did what he did, and forgives himself. Then he goes back and does things differently.
This may seem like an impossible thing for us to do, bound by linear time as we are instead of living in the science-fictional world of time travel. But to some extent, we can change the past. The past is memory - memory is perception – and perception can change. We all have things we regret, and this can cripple us and continue to blight our present and future. The Doctor shows us in fiction what we can achieve through careful, conscious management of our thoughts and memories. He shows us that we can forgive ourselves and become reconciled. We can be whole again.
Conclusion
These are quite deep truths to claim on the basis of a story, and cynics may laugh at such a deep reading of a ‘children’s programme’. But we are by nature a creative race. Creative people make Doctor Who, and creative people can watch it, engage with it and learn from it. Stories have great power and stories for children are often the most powerful of all. And what are we all but children who have changed our forms into different bodies? We’re regenerating all the time, and we travel in time too – into the future day by day, and into the past in our dreams and memories. In this way, we are all Time Lords, and the walls that divide fiction from reality are really only paper thin.

ASTROLOGY
AN INTRODUCTION TO
ASTROLOGY
by Richard Hayes (Warlockway)
Astronomy is the discovery of the physical nature of the universe, and is a science which tells us what the universe is. Astrology is an exploration of the spiritual nature of the universe and its meaning. Before the Scientific Age, both of these subjects were studied together as part of the Natural Sciences.
omers produce extensive charts called an Ephemeris which plot the paths of all these bodies through the heavens, in relation to the fixed belt of star constellations which form the Zodiac.

The calculations for a chart can be done manually from tables, or more commonly these days, by a computer programme. In Astrology, a person’s Birth Chart is seen as the blue-print for this incarnation, and it depicts the potential character of the person concerned, and the possible pattern of their lives. An Astrologer is trained to interpret the birth chart, giving a reading of the meaning of the position of the planets and their possible effect on character and life pattern of the person concerned.

If their Moon happened to be in Pisces, they would also have sensitive emotions, compassion for others and the possibility of using their psychic abilities. This compassion, linked with their Taurus affinity to the natural world, combined with the fair-mindedness of Libra, could encourage this person to develop a deep concern for the Natural World and Mother Earth.

What I have explained so far is known as Basic or Mundane Astrology, where astrological knowledge is used to explore a person’s character and actions, and the possible
astrological influences on their life. There are however, many other branches of Astrology which provide more detail about people’s inner nature and events in their lives, and the general pattern of human affairs. Esoteric Astrology is concerned with the spiritual nature of the person, and this branch of Astrology develops aspects of chart interpretation at a greater spiritual level, including a branch with deals with Karmic Astrology and pastlife awareness. Another branch of Astrology looks at the well-being of human beings, linking Astrology to Herbalism and the pattern of human illnesses, and another considers the fate of famous people and even of nations. Astrology has also been used to predict Stock Market patterns and the fate of Business Ventures. The seven traditional planets relate to the seven chakras – with Mars at the base and Jupiter at the crown, with the three outer planets situated in the aura at the extremities of the human body. It is by embracing the patterns of the heavens that the Adept integrates the powers of the planets into his aura and consciousness, and in so doing, lifts his human awareness to a greater awareness of himself, his life and the pattern of human existence. This is the Path of Enlightenment, which leads to Cosmic Consciousness.
I hope that in this article I have outlined the wide variety of uses that can be made of Astrology. In its modern form it is an invaluable tool in personal Spiritual Development, and in the teachings of the great Mystery Tradition which extends from antiquity up to the present day. ASTROLOGICAL SIGN OF THE MONTH Capricorn (22nd December – 20th January) Capricorn is a receptive, cardinal earth sign. As a cardinal sign it is one of action and initiation, which starts ventures. In the element of earth it becomes practical, interested in material things, working in a systematic way, with an interest in nature and the home comforts of life. The symbol associated with Capricorn is the Goat, with its stubborn nature, determined to climb the mountain to reach the top. It does so by taking confident, careful steps and plans its route in a considered way. It is this careful strategic planning which is why this sign is called the chess-player of the zodiac, and Capricorns are often very good at business.
Capricorns can be industrious, ambitious, organized, responsible and practical, but they can also be pessimistic, selfish and prone to depression. They are the businessmen of the zodiac and take life seriously, and are driven by ambition and worldly success. The planet which rules Capricorn is Saturn, which is the planet of restriction and serious thought. Saturn is the teacher of the zodiac, and identifies areas where we have to learn lessons. Capricorns can be serious and feel challenged by the events of their life, and at times can become pessimistic or depressed. The influence of Saturn however, encourages them to study, work hard and strive for a better life. Capricorn also rules the Tenth House of career and public image, and Capricorns must have a purpose in life and seek to find fulfillment in the career that they choose. They strive to be respected in society, and often make a contribution to public life. Capricorns will find it easy to relate to the other earth signs (Taurus & Virgo) who have a similar practical attitude to life. They will however be challenged by the emotional, intuitive nature of the water signs, particularly Cancer – their opposite sign. In the family of the zodiac, Capricorns are hard working, keen for success, and prone to take life seriously, but they make reliable friends and business partners. They need the security of material comforts money can buy, and they plan their lives carefully in pursuit of definite ambitions, in order to provide a secure life for themselves and their loved ones. The Keyword for Capricorn is Attainment. 16 | MYSTIK WAY MAGAZINE
As a Spiritualist Medium, I channel inspired writings dictated to me from the Spirit World, usually in the form of Spiritual Guidance. I hope that you find this one helpful!
Small Things It is the small things in life that are equally as important as the large. They may not be noticed or even appreciated, but they are the gestures that fill in and fill out the large. They can come in the form of a smile or a kind act, a comforting word or advice, or a direction given to help someone along life’s pathway. Think back in your own life, and recognize that it is often the small things that have counted and been remembered. These may be when someone has just stood by you reassuringly, given you a comforting hug, made you laugh, relayed a small piece of new, thanked you for something said or done, or surprised you with a gift. Small gestures – but huge in your memory. Each has touched your soul in some way, and has shown you how you in turn can reach out and make a difference to others in small ways.
When you begin to become aware of us from the spirit realms, this will be in small ways – a word, a picture, a perfume, a touch. Let us know that you have sensed our presence, which in turn encourages us to come closer to you to experiment with greater things. Remember that it is the small things in life that remain in our minds of things or occasions that we have shared together, the comfort you gave us, the activities that we did together, the love that touched us both. It is these that we mention when we come to communicate with you, to prove who we are, and that we continue to be aware of you and your life on earth. Just the knowledge that we are near you, supporting you still, may be a small gesture from us, but hopefully, knowing that we will meet again, you can live your life on earth to the full. Let it be a life full of small things – to touch the lives of others.

TAROT
In the previous article it was assumed that a gentleman had entered into a new relationship, and wished to know how it would develop.
11 – Place this card above card 10. This is the outcome card and the pattern of the future, as it relates to you personally.
Interpretation of the cards Having read the first six cards of this spread (See last issue of Mystik Way Magazine), you are now in a position to complete this spread. Take the last five cards of the eleven cards that you previously drew, and place these cards in order 6 -11 in the following positions ---
7 - Place this card to the right of the original Celtic Cross formed by cards 1 – 6. This is the card which is the essence of the present spread, and must be worked with if a successful outcome is to be achieved. 8 – Place this card at the base of a vertical line of four cards, to the right of card 7. This card represents the Queriant as they see themselves relative to the issue being explored.
CARD 7 – LOVERS – This card confirms that love is the basis of this relationship, and you should explore this, both at a physical and spiritual level. You should use this relationship to expand your awareness of female values, and integrate these values into your understanding of life. CARD 8 – EMPEROR - You are naturally a strong personality, and you may consequently take the lead in this relationship. You should try to relax your attitudes and embrace the other person’s character and attitude, if you are to create a fulfilling, long-term relationship.
9 – Place this card above card 8. This is the affect that you are having on others and them on you.
CARD 9 – STRENGTH – There is obviously a strong physical attraction between you both, which can form the basis of a dynamic relationship. Be aware that strong emotions will be released as a consequence of this interaction, and so you should exercise sensitivity and understanding, if the relationship is to endure.
10 – Place this card above card 9. This represents your hopes or fears.
CARD 10 - CHARIOT – You hope that this relationship will mature and develop
18 | MYSTIK WAY MAGAZINE
over time. You should use your intuition, not your intellect, when making decisions, and endeavour to balance male and female energies, both in yourself and in the relationship. CARD 11 – FORTUNE – In the long term, the outcome of this relationship will depend on many factors, not all of which you will have control over. It is important that you progress with confidence and be prepared to overcome any obstacles which may occur.
SUMMARY – It is apparent from the Celtic Cross part of this spread (See previous article), that the surrounding influences are favourable for a successful relationship. This is continued in the last five cards, which revolves around the LOVERS, and this card along with STRENGTH, encourages a dynamic sexual relationship. It is not possible at this stage to determine the outcome, as this will depend on many factors yet to be experienced.

Tarot Card for Yule And the new yearly cycle
The Hierophant…also known as the
High Priest.
Once also known as the pope, which I find does not fit well. The High Priest is the father figure, the ruler just but fair with great worldly and other worldly wisdom therefore able to rule the Kingdom with great clarity. Known to the Knights Templar as the Grand Master who began as the novice & walked the Grail path through experience and time finally arriving as the aged Master, he has seen and done everything, justice & injustice, love & hate, peace & turmoil. Now he is the just Father figure & Ruler. Key meanings….Guidance/wisdom being offered by a wise person or using your own higher self’s inner experience or wisdom….seeking guidance from an older wiser person. Guidance by spirit or higher beings when prominent in any reading, a favourable card indeed. Quite possibly it also means you now have acquired the wisdom to proceed with whatever it is you are planning.

Pomanders – by Jenny Spirit
A great way to bring the healing power of nature in to your home in the winter is to make a pomander. The name pomander is derived from the French ‘Pomme d’ambre, which means apple of amber. Traditionally pomanders were or carried around in a vase as a protection against infection in times of pestilence or like perfume to mask bad smells! They were basically an early form of aromatherapy. Later they were used as a religious keepsake or even in recovery spells in witchcraft. The modern version of the pomander that we probably all recognise is made with an orange, cloves and ribbon. Additional ingredients can be added to help preserve the pomander for a very long time, but personally I like making one at the start of December every year. Piercing the flesh of the orange with cloves brings out an uplifting aroma – an antidote to the dark nights. I highly recommend making some as I do for myself and friends every year. Simple instructions on how to make one can be found at the following site: http://www.instructables.com/id/Pomander-ball-Christmas-gift/ happy making!

Follow this guideline in order to start the healing process through forgiveness: 1. Decided on the person and situation/ issues you want to forgive. You don’t need the person to know, co-operate or even to be alive for this process to be effective. 2. Take a few deep breaths with your eyes closed. Connect to and acknowledge the negative emotional triggers you feel around this person – this may include hurt; betrayal; sadness; anger; fear; hurt; apathy; grief; blame; regret; resentment; shame; hostility. 3. Identify the hook – what does it all come down to? It may help to speak to some-one you trust about the situation to gather your thoughts or write a letter to the person explaining how you feel (you don’t need to send it and burning it helps to dissipate the energy of it) You will notice that once you have expressed your anger around the situation, you will be able to narrow it down to one core issue e.g betrayal; abandonment; rejection; deception etc.
...You lighten your load. Not forgiving is like wearing dark sunglasses that gruesomely distort all that you see, and you want others to see through the same glasses. When you forgive, it is like leaving behind a heavy weight. Imagine that you are trying to walk through an airport while carrying a heavy suitcase in each hand with another strapped over your shoulder and another on your back like a backpack. It is difficult and painful work to go anywhere. Forgiving is putting down all of your baggage and leaving it behind. You travel lightly. It has nothing to do with worthiness—yours or others’. You and they are both worthy. That is not the issue. The issue is whether you wish to continue to carry your baggage. When you forgive, you are able to enjoy your life, laugh again, and see the beauty in others. When you cannot forgive yourself, you cannot forgive others. When you cannot forgive others, you cannot forgive yourself. The dynamic of forgiveness is the same in both cases.
A sincere desire to forgive past hurts and heal pain does not bring an abusive person back into our lives, it does however, clear the residual effect of the hurt and pain deep within us. What we release in love allows us to find peace.
4. Once you can see the hook, ask yourself if you really believe the person intended this on you personally or if you were a casualty of circumstance? 5. Empathize with the person who has hurt you and realize that this was an act born out of their own fear and ego. It does help to remember that the wheels of Karma turn. If you cannot get past this point, it may be necessary to cut the cords with this person and do a release process (please refer to my free eBook on the website for these processes) 6. In time, even if you have to repeat this process often, the emotional charge will lessen enough for you to see the situation through a different perspective. 7. As part of this process, identify where you need to forgive yourself. This may include carrying the baggage for so long; being deceived after trusting this person; giving your power away or acting against your better judgment etc. 8. Once you are at peace with the situation, sit comfortable with your back straight and your feet on the ground. Take a few deep breaths and close your eyes. Visualize a cocoon of golden

energy around you and ask Arch Angel Michael for protection. Now, visualize the person you are forgiving in front of you. (Remember this is their soul energy and all souls are of an unconditional love vibration). Say out loud: I forgive you (state their full name) for the pain that you have caused me, whether your actions were real or imagined, conscious or unconscious. I forgive you across all dimensions, lifetimes and timelines and ask that you forgive me for any pain I might have caused you. I set both of us free. Now see the person turn and walk away. Visualize the golden cocoon around you getting more vibrant and state: I (your full name) forgive myself totally and unconditionally for any burdens I have taken on or pain I have caused others: real or imagined, conscious or unconscious, across all dimensions, lifetimes and timelines. I am free to be whole and complete. And so it is done.
You will know that forgiveness has begun when you recall those who hurt you and feel the power to wish them well. Lewis B. Smedes

Animal and plant of the month with Jennifer Adele
Chipmunk Much like the squirrel, the chipmunk shows us how to balance the aspects of work and play within our own lives, and as the solstice comes and night overpowers the strength of the day, we will all strive for a sense of balance once more. It is good practice for each day to hold enough time for both. This promotes proper balance within the self. Chipmunks are a flurry of activity, but all activity has purpose and meaning, and all things will be revealed in time. Busy? Flustered by your holiday to-do list? Do you feel like you are constantly running around? If so, make sure every activity serves a purpose and is not merely superfluous and/or under-appreciated. The cautionary note of the chipmunk this time of year is to also not allow your projects to be revealed until they are well under way or even nearing completion. In nature, chipmunks have a very complex burrow that offers protection for their young, and for themselves, with several exits and storage chambers. Protect that which is yours and prepare the stores for lean times, and this can coincide with the lean energy that is present in the colder months. Also, chipmunk tells us through its burrow that it is always good to have several exit strategies for any given situation.
Metaphysically speaking, this totem animal can teach you how to read the voices of others, to know the truth and lies in their voices and to detect the balance that each person carries with them. When working with the chipmunk it is important to trust what you hear in the voice rather than the actual words themselves.
Symbology: work and play balance, preparedness, activity, proper notes of caution.

Mistletoe
“mistletoe” (where “mistel” means excrements and “toe” is a word for the expression “tree branch”).
Being a parasitical plant, mistletoe grows as a hanging bush on the branches of trees. With its cylindrical stem, ramified in pairs and slightly thickened at the nodes, mistletoe can reach up to 60 centimeters in height. It has oval leafs, rounded at their tip, of a yellowish-green color. These maintain their fresh color all through the winter season. Also, in December, mistletoe fruits mature, having a rounded shape and white color. The flowers appear late in the autumn, and soon following, the fruits appear. The lifespan of this plant is approximately 70 years. Mistletoe can be found between the branches of many types of trees. The most “valuable” kind of mistletoe is often considered that which grows in fruit bearing trees, especially apple. Also, the ones which grow on pear trees, fir, birch, rose and ash trees are considered to be of a slightly superior quality.
Prior to belonging to the series of symbols of the winter holidays, mistletoe was considered to be a general Pagan religious symbol. Many believed it to have magical attributes because it healed diseases, brought good fortune, protected against negativity, and was a bringer of fertility. In the Middle Ages, for example, there was a belief according to which hanging mistletoe branches on the ceiling would protect the dwelling as well as its inhabitants against unclean spirits. Another example of mistletoe’s magic properties concerns the Vikings, who considered this plant to have the power of bringing the dead back to life. The Romans used it to legalize marriages with a famous kiss under mistletoe, a tradition that is modified but still present today.
In order to unravel the origin of this plant’s name, it helps to know that in olden times there was a belief that mistletoe was multiplied through bird excrements. The reasoning behind this belief was simple: mistletoe grew only on the branches of the trees on which the birds stood. Anglo-Saxons have thus named the plant
Symbolism: magic, mysticism, health, wellbeing, good fortune, protection, fertility, abundance, winter wonders.

Moon Magic Rachel Patterson
T
he moon - the beautiful, glorious, wonderful ball of luminescence that hangs in our skies and what power she wields too…
Not only does she control the oceans and the tides but I am a firm believer that her powers have a very strong affect on our human emotions too. You only have to keep a moon diary for a short while to realise that our moods and emotional state swings along with her waxing and waning… oh and don’t forget the full moon madness! I do highly recommend you try keeping a moon diary if you haven’t done so before it is a very worthwhile exercise and incredibly enlightening. Just jot down how you feel each day, what emotions you are experiencing and what your mood is, then check what phase the moon is, I am pretty sure that you will come to see a pattern. As she waxes and climbs from darkness to crescent we should work on creating new beginnings and make the most of the energy that is building. I like to write a cheque to myself for abundance and financial security on the new moon, to keep the money coming in to cover my needs (the only real use for cheque books these days!). When the moon is in her full beauty and glory her energies are at their highest and can be a bit unpredictable and overwhelming, try to work with her energy rather than against it. A good time to cleanse all 30 | MYSTIK WAY MAGAZINE
your crystals and magical tools and also an excellent time for divination especially water scrying. All you need is a bowl, preferably with a dark coloured inner, half fill it with water, drop a silver coin in and then position the bowl so that the light from the moon reflects on the surface. Ask your question and then gaze upon the surface to see your answer. On the waning moon when she goes from full back to crescent is the time to release and let go, old habits and that which no longer serves your higher good. An excellent time to have a clear out, literally, mentally and spiritually. There are more than the three moon phase above, the ones I work with are new moon, waxing moon, full moon, waning moon, dark moon/balsamic, blue moon, red moon and eclipses – each one with different energies to work with. I also like to work with the different phases of the moon and link them to the festivals, the eight Sabbats that we have each year. Each monthly moon also has a different name, each culture in each part of the world has their own name for them depending on the climate, the surroundings and the people such as the Wolf Moon for January and the Hare Moon for May. I like to work with the Celtic names and also the Celtic Tree Calendar which assigns 13 trees
to cover the year for instance December 24th to January 20th is Beth or the Birch tree, a time of rebirth and regeneration. The three main phases of the moon are also associated with the triple goddess, the waxing being the Maiden, the full moon the Mother and the waning moon the Crone. But there are also many moon deities in many of the pantheons. Arianrhod is a Welsh Goddess of the Dark Moon and also part of the triple goddess triad with Blodeuwedd and Cerridwen.
will be published in January 2014 and I have tried to cover as much as I possibly can inside it, starting with the basics but adding a whole lot more as well. The book is available from all major online stockists. An accompanying Moon Meditation CD is also available from my website:
http://www.rachelpatterson.co.uk https://www.facebook.com/MoonBooks/info
I also like to work with totem animals and there are many that correspond with the moon or the dark of night. The obvious ones are bat, moth and owl but also wolf, cow, dog and raven to name a few. They lend their energies to moon magic perfectly and also make wonderful nocturnal guides for journeying to the Underworld. We probably all know our horoscope sign but the ones we are familiar with are actually the Sun signs that we were born under, we also have a Moon sign. Working the moon sign into your spell work and magical practices can lend enormous power and energy to whatever you are doing. A lot of gardeners, even those that aren’t pagan will plant and harvest by the phases of the moon using an almanac that lists what to plant and when, in line with astrological timings to increase the chances of a good crop. You can create all sorts of charms to work with the energy of the moon; moon cords, bottles, medicine bags, amulets and even just charged crystals or shells. Not forgetting the moon faeries and moon angels that are all associated with the moon and her phases. Meeting a moon faery can bring you great abundance, but be careful because just as the moon has a dark side so do moon fae‌ There is so much that can be learnt about the moon and her magic, so many different ways to work with her energies and honour her power. HEALTH: The single best plant to have in your home is Aloe vera (one of about 250 species of “Aloes” which are members of Lily family and are also relatives of tulips and Easter lilies). The name “Aloe” derives from the Arabic “Alloeh” for “bitter, shiny substance.” The Russians call it the “elixir of youth,” in China it’s known as the “harmonious remedy,” and the Egyptians called it the “plant of immortality” and provided it as an offering in tombs of the pharaohs.
The medicinal compound in Aloe vera is called “aloin” and it’s extracted from the sap. We all know it’s great for sunburns, but it also contains all 8 essential glyconutrients necessary for cellular function and optimal immune response. Vitamins present in Aloe Vera include A, B, C, and E. It also contains magnesium, chromium, zinc, calcium, and selenium as well as 20 of 22 essential amino acids.
The compounds found in Aloe vera are also able to activate the white blood cells necessary to fight against the growth of cancer cells. Peptides found in Aloe vera help strengthen the immune system. Aloe has also been shown to be effective at treating IBS, Chron’s disease, and Celiac disease and is antibacterial, antiviral, & antifungal. It’s good for healing internal 32 | MYSTIK WAY MAGAZINE
tissues damaged by radiation exposure, and works well on hemorrhoids, insect bites, poison ivy and oak, as well as psoriasis. Aloe is a very strong purgative for constipation when used as the whole leaf. The Chinese use it as a laxative and a stimulant for the stomach.
Raw Aloe vera juice is one of the most efficient ways to introduce the plant’s healing properties into your system. In 1988, while presiding in the shantytown of Rio Grande dol Sul, Brazil, Father Romano Zago (a Franciscan friar and scholar) learned from local natives about a potent all-natural recipe derived from the Aloe arborescens plant which they used to promote supreme immune health.
There has been much publicized scientific research and literature on the synergistic benefits of the 300 phytotherapeutic biochemical and nutrient constituents of Aloe vera to aid the body’s defenses to enhance the immune system and protect against diseases. If you don’t have an Aloe vera plant in your home, you should get one ASAP

This gift represented the sun, immortality, harvest, and accomplishment of triumph, light, and life this year and each year we complete. Holly, ivy and mistletoe is hung indoors and out, decorating our homes in hopes of inviting nature in and good fortune to all the residents all year long.
Hello beautiful People! Amaritday here with you again! Another chapter closed last article for the year. We are in December and Yule is the shortest day and longest night of the year, the sun’s “rebirth”, the time where dark gives over to light, also known as the winter solstice. On this night, our ancestors celebrated the rebirth of the Son/Sun, the giving of life, which warmed the frozen Earth. From this day forward, the days would become longer. Let us look at all that has gone on this year; See what you need to keep and what you need to let go of. Remember that home family and honoring ourselves our lives and our ancestors are traditions that bind us to our beginnings, which is why we celebrate! Love one another be grateful be kind and open your heart to hope and new beginnings! Bonfires were lit in the fields, and crops and trees were “wassailed or blessed” with toasts of spiced cider. The ceremonial Yule log was the highlight of the Solstice festival. In accordance to tradition, the log must either have been harvested from the householder’s land, or given as a gift... it must never have been bought. Things have changed since the beginning origins of Yule but whatever your intention know that, intention is key in order for us live in modern times. Try using a base to hold three candles. Find a smaller branch of oak or pine, and flatten one side so it sets upright. Drill three holes in the top side to hold red, green, and white (season), green, gold, and black (the Sun God), or white, red, and black (the Great Goddess). Continue to decorate with greenery, red and gold bows, rosebuds, cloves, and dust with flour.

IMBOLC Celebrated at the start of February, usually still in the hight of Winter, but spring is not too far away. The long dark nights are getting lighter and the Sun’s rays have a little more warmth ….We are now on the downhill slope to spring, light and hope return. At this time we call upon the Goddess Bridget to warm, inspire and heal us. Bridget is the Celtic Triple Goddess of Poetry, Smithcraft and Healing, usually portrayed in the form of a female shape made of corn ( dolly ). Mainly in Ireland and Scotland, women carried these corn images from house to house to present her to the occupants who had prepared their Altars with flowers, shells, stones, bright coloured ribbons to honour her thereby receiving her healing of balance, grounding and renewal. On the eve of Imbolc, prepare your alter with these items and anything else you wish that you associate with rejuvenation…..burn an incense you like, use plenty of bright coloured candles to represent the return of the light (if possible get a corn dolly )….use whatever words that come to mind and finish with… Bridget is here….Bridget is welcome.
