People are tired of cities. Some choose to adopt a rural lifestyle post retirement, while some choose to spend a part of their career away from the city.
Location:
Outside the quiet town of Srirangapatna, between Bengaluru and Mysuru
Project: Housing
Site area: 1.5 acres
Users: There are mainly three types of residentsThe retired owners, The travelers and The tenants.
Niranjan housing, seated among the gentle slopes of rice fields in the foothills of the Western Ghats, is meant to be a second innings abode for those leaving cities for a rural lifestyle.
The main aim of Niranjan is to harness their spark of interest in organic farming and utilize it to create a platform for both groups of citizens to learn from each other, right in their houses.

Level 1- Ground floor houses
House Type 3
Level 0- Site with natural rain water channels running below the houses to join the river
The houses are grouped in clusters of three, each cluster having one house of each type. The reason for this distribution of house types is for all the different users to interact with each other and allow for learning.
The community kitchen and club house hosts weekly sales of varieties of rice, millets, grains and grams that are going scarce.
Each house has at least one terrace for organic terrace
There are 8 units of this house. The house is split across two floors where the upper floor can be rented out as a separate house or used as a single house as per
An institue with a vision to lead, enable and inspire others to attain a healthier world for animals and people. To solve pressing issues in veterinary and public health, while expanding our fundamental understanding of science.
Location:
Suburbs of Bengaluru
Project: Institution
Site area: 11 acres
Users: Pet owners
Farmers with cattle
Students Doctors Researchers
The concept is to establish a connect between humans and nature, animals in particular. This institute aims to help animals achieve good health, for which their comfort is of utmost importance. Going back to their roots or the jungle, there is a beautiful ecosystem in the jungle, where predators and pray, large trees to small saplings live in harmony.
Learning from the five layers of the jungle, the built form of Viropa Veterinary institute aims to achieve a fraction of that level of harmony, by providing comfort to human and animal users alike.
Layers of a forest habitat
The goal is to curate an environment for animals which makes them the happiest. A happy environment enables and accelerates curing.
The exposed brick curved buildings blend into the landscape of this suburban corner. The numerous courtyards, jalis and wide north openings allow sunlight to flow in the buildings without being harsh. This enables the animals, students, doctors and faculty alike, to be comfortable and achieve their goals of research, learning, discovery and healing.

Rhinoceros model of Waffle Pavilion, to scale.
1. A surface was created using an interpolate curve, and three circular holes were trimmed from it.
2. Cylinders of smaller radii were placed at the centers of these holes and the surface was raised by 10m.
3. The surface was blended with the hollow cylinders and offset to give it a thickness. The new and old surfaces were blended around the edges.
4. Contours were generated and joined, perpendicular to each other.
5. The surfaces of the contours were extruded to give them a thickness and form the waffle-like structure.
Brutalism, also known as Brutalist architecture, is a style that emerged in the 1950s and grew out of the early-20th century modernist movement.
The term ‘brutalism’ derives from ‘Beton brut’ or raw concrete. The aim of Brutalist architecture was to represent brutal honesty in architectural form and material.
As a part of our 3rd sem design studio, a study of Brutalism was done. This Film production office was designed using the identified principles of Brutalism. The main ones being:
Usage of concrete in its raw form without plastering. Larger than human scale, less windows.
Known for his details, Carlo Scarpa was an Italian architect who was influenced by the materials, landscape, and the history of Venetian culture, and Japan. We studied his details in the museum Castelvecchio, this suspended railing in particular. This solid wood railing capped in steel is suspended
by interlocking steel rings from balusters on either end. The most fascinating element in this design is the fluidity of the railing. The reason it is allowed to swing and move is to prevent perople from resting on the railing and instead pay attention to the highlighted ruins showcased by the railings.
Right Terrazzo tile Materials usedMsand, White cement, Broken glass, wire mesh for reinforcement, sand-paper square tray for form.

Full scale Mexican window. A study of Mexican windows and window details was done, after which a typical Mexican window was designed. It was then made by a group of 8 of us with the help of a carpenter.
As a group of four, we made a replica of this railing using solid hardwood and mild steel, taking the help of a leth fabricator. My main learning from this project was how to get work done and how important it is to show all the right details in drawings.
The site was cleared out, markings were then made on the site and earth was excavated to depths of 2 inches and 8 inches for the benches and planters respectively. Next, the excavated ground was rammed and levelled. Lastly the site was finally soled with gravel and covered with jelly. The jelly was covered with mud to complete the foundation.
After experimenting, samples were made with different proportions of Earth, Jelly, fibres and oxide where needed.
The approved mixes were layered in the cast and compacted, creating different colored layers of rammed earth in a single block. The formwork for the benches were drafted, cut and assembled.
Oxides were used to add colour and tried incorporating different materials into their structure. Mosaic tiles, bamboo and clay tiles were embedded in the top layer of the benches to create variations.
This was a full scale one week hands on workshop where our group of 16 members made a stage canopy structure using polyester fabric and casuarina poles.
The initial design was done using soap bubbles and thread. Stretchable cloth was used to make prototypes after which the final full scale cloth was measured out, cut and stitched. The poles were fixed in concrete bases and then the cloth was tied to each. Ropes were tied to the poles and stretched out to create and maintain tension in the fabric
A 5-day workshop over two weekends. After the initial learnings through activities and observation of nature, we were split into teams to design a product using biomimicry and the multiple stages of design thinking learnt.
A VORONOI PATTERN IS A SYSTEMATIC REPITITION OF AN IRREGULAR PATTERN, FOLLOWING A SET OF PARAMETERS. A STUDY ABOUT VORONOI LED TO AN OBSERVATION THAT THE LINE JOINING THE CENTERS OF TWO UNITS IS PERPENDICULARLY BISECTED BY THE UNIT BOUNDARY.
Elements of nature observed, recorded and taken inspiration from:
Tortoise shell- with the perfect fluid dynamics and stength, it was taken as inspiration for the form of the board base.
The bamboo base was divided into multiple layers with porous and fibrous intermediate layers, inspired by tree stems.
*above images are not my own
Gecko feet have tubular projections which create suction and allow it to stick to any surface. A similar mechanism has been used for the surface of the skateboard
A voronoi pattern is a systematic repitition of an irregular pattern, following a set of parameters. A study about voronoi led to an observation that the line joining the centers of two units is perpendicularly bisected by the unit boundary. The observed parameters were used in a simple grid to get a pattern which was then taken to a fibonacci grid. A unique voronoi pattern was thus created, which was translated into a 3d structure using cones. Sand was used as a mould to create the structure out of plaster of paris.

Using Revit 2020 and the Insight plugin for Revit 2020, we learnt how to run various types of analysis to get reports of a building’s performance. In this workshop we obtained a report on the Lighting analysis and Solar analysis of a multi-storey building.
Above- Results of the solar analysis of a hexagonal multistorey building: Average insolation = 173 Wh/m2
Below- Results of the sDA lighting preview and illuminance analysis of an octagonal multi-storey building: Average 76% passing between 9am and 3pm
