WU HIV cases not increasing

MATTERS OF THE HEART

BY CLAIRE BYUN byunc@mytjnow.com

Any rumors about an increase in positive HIV diagnoses on Winthrop’s campus are not true, said Monica Adamian, director of prevention services at Catawba Care Coalition. “It’s just not something new or something becoming an epidemic,” Adamian said. There is no AIDS, or acquired immune deficiency syndrome, epidemic on Winthrop’s campus, Adamian said. “I’ve heard some of the rumors too, and at one point someone told

Art students craft bike racks for downtown BY JONATHAN MCFADDEN mcfaddenj@mytjnow.com

Downtown Rock Hill is ready to ride, and Winthrop art students and the city’s bike club are the reasons why. Students from the department of fine arts at Winthrop will make their mark on Rock Hill’s Main Street and surrounding hub when they design and sculpt bike racks that will be installed throughout the city’s downtown area. The project comes as phase two of the Downtown Arts Initiative, a union between Winthrop’s fine arts department, the Arts Council of York Coun-

ty and the Rock Hill Economic Development Corporation, designed to funnel more public art into downtown Rock Hill. Now, the members of the Rock Hill Bicycle Club are getting their say. Taking out two birds with one stone, Winthrop’s fine arts students will create six bike racks to help transform Rock Hill’s downtown area into a more viable core of art, culture and entertainment while helping the Rock Hill Bicycle Club promote cycling throughout the city. Last semester, sculpture

If you had to describe the 2010-2011 Winthrop women’s basketball season, it would have to be personified by its electrifying, disappointing, up-anddown, but most of all, promising freshman Dequesha McClanahan. The point guard is a microcosm of her team, which has had a roller-coaster season, from their 16-point shooting night debacle against Southern Polytechnic State to their 93-46 blowout win against Southern Wesleyan University. McClanahan, five-time winner of the Big South Freshman of the Week award, needs just one more similar honor this season to tie the record of a Winthrop legend. Ashley Fann came to Winthrop with the Eagles in the summer of 2005 after their worst ever sea-

son, recording only two wins out of 28. With Fann’s help, the team righted the ship in impressive fashion, finishing the season at 14-15. And now McClanahan, just two years after Fann graduated, looks to do the same with her current team. Last year’s Lady Eagles were 13-18 and 2-13 away from Winthrop Coliseum. Although the 2010-2011 season has not been one of immediate success, the hope is that the team finishes strong, with just eight games left in the regular season. “I think they’ll be fine,” said Fann, now a color commentator for the Winthrop Eagles radio program. “Coach [Childers] is really good at preparing them, but the second half of conference play is a lot different; teams have played you. They know what you like to
