Fall Swing We’re rounding third and heading home for 2018. The older I get, the quicker 365 days seems to go by—even with 162 Major League Baseball games spread out over seven months, for this Cubs fan.

Saturday, Sept. 22 marks the first official day of fall (at 8:54 p.m., to be exact). The sun sets at 7:11 p.m., and the lights come on a little earlier each night.

I always look forward to fall with a great deal of optimism, not only for the approaching football season and the hope that my Cubs make a return to the playoffs, but with summer squarely in the rearview mirror, once again, the final few months of the year are stacked with exciting opportunities in my day-to-day business.

I’m fortunate to have booked some new projects and clients, as well as a few speaking engagements and interesting promotions across the various businesses in which I’m involved. Our magazine now hits more doors than ever (over 12,800), so that’s pretty exciting, too.

Many of us will spend our upcoming Friday evenings at local high school football fields and fueling up our cars for Saturday road trips to Kinnick or Jack Trice Stadiums.

Others will spend time at area tailgates, supporting or visiting an area kid who attends one of the colleges or universities nestled throughout Iowa and our surrounding states.

As we put away the sunscreen, finish uploading the vacation photos to our social media, and re-adjust to school-night bedtimes, it’s the unofficial start of “the year”—the SCHOOL year. This brings more of a change than Jan. 1, at least around our house. We get things back on schedule and adopt a much more structured routine than we slide into during the summer.

City to Transform 66 Acres Into Waukee Youth Sports Complex & Park

An all-inclusive fishing pier will make it possible for more visitors to utilize the future lake.

Waukee Betterment Foundation Assisting With All-Inclusive Amenities As the Waukee Community School District begins construction in October on its second high school, the City of Waukee has plans to turn the adjacent 66-acre property into the Waukee Youth Sports Complex & Park. But, don’t let the word “youth” fool you: the new amenity will benefit community members and visitors of all ages and abilities.

Waukee Youth Sports Complex & Park Construction on Phase 1 of the Waukee Youth Sports Complex & Park will begin in the spring of 2021. Phase 1 will include eight softball/baseball fields and two practice quads with batting cages. These fields will accommodate youth softball players ages 18 and under, as well as youth baseball players ages 10 and under. In Phase 2, four larger baseball fields will be added to accommodate players up to age 14. The need for a complex of this sort has been growing in recent years.

“The impact of this project will be huge,” said Waukee Recreation Supervisor Josh VandeKamp. “Right now, the City has three large fields at Centennial Park and four small fields at Warrior Park. We have 125 teams vying for field space and 40-plus Parks & Rec softball teams to accommodate annually. The construction of this new facility should alleviate Waukee’s shortage of field availability.”

VandeKamp said the investment in an amenity of this magnitude will not only benefit local athletes, but it should also catch the eye of regional tournament planners.

“We envision hosting tournaments on the weekends, which will attract teams from across Iowa, as well as teams from bordering states,” said VandeKamp. “If the weather cooperates, the City’s new complex should be busy from April through October. That could also help boost the local economy as visitors will need places to sleep, eat, shop and be entertained.”

In addition to ball fields, the City plans to construct playgrounds, a lake, trails and parking. The new trails will signify the start of connectivity to Waukee's existing trail system as well as to regional trails. The Waukee Youth Sports Complex & Park is expected to open in 2022.

Nearly half of the project will be funded through a Public Improvement Fund set up by Apple; the remainder will be financed by revenues from the Dallas County Local Option Sales & Services Tax. These new funding sources make it possible for the City to complete this project without the use of property tax revenues.

An Eye on All-Inclusive Amenities In partnership with the City, the Waukee Betterment Foundation recently launched a fundraising campaign for the Waukee Miracle League® Ball Field and Play Area, as well as an all-inclusive fishing pier, all to be included at the Complex. The goal is to raise $2.5 million to put toward these specialized amenities.

“The Waukee Betterment Foundation is devoted to making Waukee better,” said Foundation President Jim Miller. “This project will actually extend its reach beyond Waukee into the neighboring communities to provide a source of recreation for a surprisingly large population. Each Miracle League field can accommodate roughly 220 children in leagues. Since we know there are about 700 children in the area with disabilities, there is a real need. The adult leagues will also have a very strong demand.”

The Miracle League field will serve those with disabilities by way of its customdesigned, rubberized turf field which helps prevent injuries and provides easy access for wheelchairs and assistive devices. An all-inclusive play area with the same material and specialized equipment will also be installed near the field. It can be enjoyed by all visitors.

“We are hearing from senior living facilities and veterans’ groups that an all-inclusive fishing pier will be a huge draw,” said Miller. “Currently, there is no place in the area to fish easily if you have mobility issues. This pier will have ample parking and restrooms nearby, as well as paved low-slope walks to the pier. Its design will allow people in wheelchairs to fish from a safe and protected area.”

Central Standard Burgers

You don’t have to look far in the Des Moines metro area to find a good burger. From the classics at B-Bop’s to the slightly less conventional choices at Zombie Burger, there’s something to suit every taste. And now customers have an intriguing new option in Waukee: Central Standard Burgers.

Central Standard, located at 1222 SE University Avenue, is the second location of a restaurant that got its start in Bettendorf, Iowa, about five years ago. According to general manager Andy Crounse, the restaurant was developed as an alternative to more traditional “cookiecutter” burger joints.

The restaurant takes pride in its craft beer offerings, with 24 beers on tap at any given time. These are locally sourced as much as possible. Current options include beers from Exile Brewing Company and Iowa Brewing Company. “They’re all Iowa beers at the moment,” said Crounse.

Central Standard proved enormously popular. As the restaurant, along with other eateries owned by the same group, continued to be successful, the ownership group determined the time was right to expand. Crounse said Waukee was selected for the new restaurant because Waukee is “all about family and the community—it’s the key to good living!”

Central Standard is also well-known for its massive, creative shakes—think tall glasses rimmed with candy sprinkles and topped with baked goods. For example, the Cookie Dough shake features an actual cookie sandwich, and the s’more shake— well, you get the idea. All menu shakes can be upgraded to loaded shakes for those over 21. The restaurant also features “Will’s Feature Shake of the Month.” A portion of the proceeds from this specialty shake go to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, a partnership which has been going strong for about four years, according to Crounse, and one of which they are especially proud.

According to Crounse, the menu at the Waukee location will look very similar to the one in Bettendorf, with a few differences on the features menu and in the cocktail offerings. For example, a “Warrior Lemonade” mocktail will appear as a Waukee-specific item.

Perhaps unique among burger restaurants, Central Standard bakes all of its own bread, pretzels and buns for their burgers. And these burgers are not slabs of boring beef with nothing but ketchup. Among the dozen or so burger options are the “Oh No,” with cheese curds and fried pickles, and the “Heck No,” with jalapeño poppers and ghost pepper cheese.

The menu also includes other sandwiches like the PB & J (that’s pork belly and jalapeño, not the childhood favorite peanut butter and jelly), and various jazzed-up mac and cheese selections (if, like the writer, your taste preferences occasionally lean in the direction of the kids’ menu).

Central Standard had a soft open for family and friends the week of July 23 and officially opened for business on July 30. The restaurant currently has about 65 people on staff, and Crounse says they expect to eventually have around 100 employees total. With plenty of indoor space, plus a patio, the restaurant seats around 280 people. Customers can find their menu and hours of operation online at centralstandardburgers.com.

The restaurant also features “Will’s Feature Shake of the Month.”

One of the unfortunate things I keep running into is otherwise valid wills that cannot be admitted to probate. A variety of issues can prevent an otherwise valid will from being admitted to probate, but the one that keeps popping up is the inability to find the witnesses for the will.

This may seem like a trivial problem, but in my practice, I’ve had several scenarios in which tracking down the witnesses has proven to be problematic, if not impossible—usually because the witness changed jobs, moved out of state or is deceased. In some of these situations, we were able to track down the witnesses by using a private investigator and had the witnesses sign an affidavit allowing us to probate the will. However, in other cases, we were not able to track down the witnesses and had to move forward and probate the estate without the will.

This may seem like a small issue, but for someone whose will doesn’t mirror the default Iowa statutes, getting their will admitted to probate is the best, if not the only way to have their final wishes met. Additionally, moving forward intestate (without a will) causes other issues and delays, such as requiring the administrator to petition the court every time they need to sell real estate or other items without a regularly established market.

This provision is called a self-proving affidavit and is authorized under Iowa Code §633.279(2). Essentially, the self-proving affidavit allows the will to be admitted to probate, even if the witnesses cannot be located or are no longer living. Most attorneys, including our firm, execute the self-proving affidavit when the will is executed. However, if the attorney’s office doesn’t have enough staff to serve as witnesses or hasn’t adopted the self-proving affidavit as part of their practice, it’s possible that even a recent will doesn’t have it attached.

The easiest way to check whether your will has a selfproving affidavit is to turn to the last page of the will and see whether it’s been notarized. If there is no notary stamp and signature verifying the signatures of the two witnesses, you likely do not have a self-proving affidavit.

The good news is that the Iowa code has a provision that allows the person making the will and the witnesses to pre-verify the will.

When to Replace Shocks or Struts If you’ve ever ridden on a boat through choppy waters, you know how unpleasant the ride can be. That’s because there is little to help absorb the impacts from heavy waves crashing against the hull. The road can have a similar effect on your vehicle without reliable shocks and struts to insulate your ride. But how do you know when it’s time to replace your shocks or struts?

It’s recommended to have your shocks and struts checked at 50,000 miles. But there are other signs that indicate the need to replace your shocks or struts: • Uneven wear on your tires • Poor steering • The vehicle sways or leans when you change lanes • Visible damage to the shock • Visible wear or cracking on mounts • Leaking shocks So what exactly are shocks and struts? Shocks actually absorb shocks from the road and keep your car from bouncing. Struts are a structural part of the suspension system. They provide a place to mount the coil springs and maintain the height of the vehicle. Broken struts can affect your steering and the safety of your vehicle.

Replacing a bad shock can be a fairly simple repair. Struts can be more involved.

Where did you grow up?

I’ve lived in Des Moines my entire life and went to Johnston High School.

Tell us a little about your family.

My wife Katie and I just celebrated our 15-year anniversary this summer. I have two boys—Colby is 11 and Cooper is 8. They definitely keep us busy!

What inspired you to be a teacher?

I’ve always loved sports and exercise and knew that was what I wanted to do for my career. I’m amazed that I get paid for something I love so much.

What do you like most about teaching in the Waukee School District?

Waukee schools have always been at the forefront of best practices and innovation.

Waukee APEX is the essence of best practice where we help students find their passions and become better aspiring professionals. It is inspiring to see the amazing things that our high school students can do when given the opportunity.

In our feature, we take a look at growth of the school district and the upcoming addition of a second high school. What excites you most about Waukee’s continued growth?

Growing Schools Waukee area students in graduating classes 2022-25 could be the first to attend the area’s second high school, which is set to open in 2021.

The fast-growing Waukee Community School District was ready to burst at the seams with Waukee High School nearing capacity. Total districtwide enrollment increased from 2,198 students in September 1999 to more than 10,000 this year with a projection of nearly 13,000 in five years.

Meanwhile, the city of Waukee had grown from 5,180 in 2000 to 20,649 last year.

Its recent one-year increase of 9 percent was the highest of any city in the Des Moines area.

The Waukee City Council and the Waukee school district took action in May 2016 to deal with the influx. They approved the joint use of 160 acres of green space for a new high school and a city-owned sports complex. The yet-to-be-named 395,000-squarefoot, 1,800-student capacity high school will reside just north of Hickman Road near the Waukee Family YMCA. Most of the land will be used for the school and its amenities with the remaining space slated for 12 softball/baseball fields and a parking lot.

Voters had to approve a referendum for $117 million in general obligation bonds for the new high school in February to make the project a reality. It required 60 percent for passage. It got 90.27 percent.

MEETING SHORT-TERM NEEDS The Waukee Innovation and Learning Center—a facility for innovative partnerships between local businesses, the community and high school students—may be used to house additional Waukee High School programs until the second high school opens.

Details are still being worked out.

TEN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS BY

2022

The district is also adding two elementary schools to accommodate growth. Radiant Elementary, at 5050 170th St. in Urbandale, is under construction and expected to open in the fall of 2019.

Land has been purchased for a tenth elementary school off Ashworth Road, west of Ute Avenue and Highway R22. Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2020 and it’s expected to open in 2022. A name for the elementary school has not been determined.

In the meantime, Nicole Lawrence, Communications Coordinator with Waukee Community School District, said the district is closely monitoring enrollment and bringing on new teachers to ensure classrooms stay at an appropriate size.

News about the district’s progress on the elementary and high school fronts has sparked questions about the middle schools as well. The district’s website dedicated to providing information about the second high school addressed the issue by stating it will monitor updated enrollment data and then make plans for how to accommodate students at the middle level.

STORY THE NEW HIGH SCHOOL’S DESIGN The concept for the new high school was developed through a six-month immersive design process between FRK Architects & Engineers, district administration and a visioning committee comprised of parents, students, staff and community members.

“In a series of three visioning sessions, the committee learned about current standards and trends in high schools around the country, reviewed multiple layouts from newer high schools and then created building layouts to reflect district values,” said Lawrence.

Feedback from the committee was used to create the building’s three-story layout, which includes a rooftop terrace, a media center with a second-floor mezzanine, an auditorium with a second-floor balcony and orchestra pit, a commons area for students and several individual and group learning areas for students and staff.

There will also be a single, secure entrance for staff, students and visitors during school hours.

“Open, light-filled spaces that promote collaboration and student development were high priorities for the committee, with student safety being a top priority,” said David Briden, Senior Project Architect and Principal with FRK Architects & Engineers.

Incorporating a pond on to the campus was also an important and notable feature when designing the school’s layout.

“A natural drainage channel through the center of the site allowed a pond to be placed as a focal point around which the city and school district facilities could be developed,” said Briden. “Placing the building adjacent to the pond allows it to take advantage of views over the pond to the north. The natural slope of the terrain creates a structure that tucks into the hillside, helping to marry the large scale of the building with the site.”

As instructional methods and learning styles continue to evolve, Briden said each classroom space would be adaptable and future-ready for students.

The school parking lot will be ready for newly licensed drivers, too, with enough room for 1,360 stalls.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES Lawrence said that while the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and Iowa High School Girls Athletic Union (IGHSAU) ultimately determine sports classifications, the district anticipates each high school to compete at the 4A – IHSAA and 5A – IGHSAU level.

“Both high schools will offer similar programming and opportunities to students,” she added.

The second high school’s outdoor athletic facilities will feature a football stadium with a field and track, four practice fields, 12 tennis courts, and baseball and softball competition and practice fields.

FACES OF WAUKEE Sarah Jackson, M.D. & Christopher A Etscheidt, MD Tell us a little about your families.

SJ: I have a little family of four—me, my husband Eric and our two girls, Sigrid and Iselin. Sigrid is our spunky, spirited three-year-old, and Iselin is (so far) our laid-back three-month-old. We enjoy taking the girls to parks, the science center and the zoo.

CE: I live with my wife and eight-month-old daughter. I grew up in Eastern Iowa and my wife grew up in Ames. We love to spend time with each other and our families. I’ve lived in Iowa my whole life and did all of my medical school and residency training at the University of Iowa. I’ve been at the Waukee Pediatric clinic for two years now.

What made you want to become a doctor?

SJ: I initially went to college with no plans for med school. I got to my senior year and wanted a job where I could help people. I’ve always loved working with kids, and I’m very interested in people’s stories, which is what I think has helped bridge my theater major with my job as a doctor.

CE: I knew I wanted to become a pediatrician after my third year medical school rotation in pediatrics.

I am kind of a kid at heart, so pediatrics fits perfectly with my personality. It allows me to have fun at my job every day.

What do you like most about helping patients in the Waukee community?

SJ: I love living in the community I serve. We live in Urbandale, but very close to Waukee. I like seeing familiar faces when we are out and about doing things.

CE: The thing I like most about helping patients in Waukee is that my patients and their families are people just like me. Iowans share a common bond and the Waukee community showcases that. Being able to relate to and understand my patients helps me take better care of them.

What advice might you have for parents wanting to teach their children about preventing illness?

SJ: The best way to prevent illness is to wash your hands. Teaching kids to cover their cough early on is a great skill too. And I’m never without some hand sanitizer in my bag!

CE: I would tell them the best way to avoid any illness is prevention. Whether it’s exercising every day, eating more vegetables or washing our hands, I would tell parents to display good behavior for their kids. Make prevention part of your daily routines. Starting early and making prevention part of your child’s life will allow them to develop strategies and good behaviors that they can take with them for the rest of their lives.

Waukee Ten & 5K

Historically, most of the more well-known races in the metro area have taken place in and around downtown Des Moines. However, Waukee is now home to its own race event—the Waukee Ten. This will be the second year for the event, which is scheduled for Sept. 15.

“Waukee is an amazing community that’s growing rapidly and is home to many people that participate in running events throughout the year,” said Pasha Korsakov of Just Go Faster, which produces the Waukee Ten. “We wanted all runners from the western suburbs and surrounding areas to have a chance to race closer to home.

Korsakov also pointed out that this time of year, many area runners are gearing up for the Des Moines Marathon and Half Marathon in October. The Waukee Ten, as a double-digit distance race, serves as a great training race for those events.

Given that many people use the Waukee Ten as a barometer for their training for longer distances, it’s an added bonus that the course is certified by USA Track and Field (USATF). According to Korsakov, a USATF-certified course is most important for runners who are aiming to qualify for events that require a specific caliber of result from an official distance race (in other words, running a certain distance at or under a certain time). However, a certified course is also great for those who want to compare themselves to others’ times at that distance.

Certification is done via official measurement by a USATFapproved certifier. Those measurements are used to mark the course and place mile markers for race day.

According to Korsakov, not much is changing from last year’s inaugural Waukee Ten. Runners can tackle the ten-mile race or elect to do the 5K (3.1 miles) instead. Both groups of runners will share part of the course, which traverses the historic Waukee Triangle.

The ten-mile runners will be treated to a scenic tour of Waukee as they travel through the rest of the course, winding along trails, back roads and growing neighborhoods. All runners will finish their races where they started—on the track inside Waukee Stadium.

Approximately 400 people registered last year, and organizers are hoping for over 500 this year. “We’re looking forward to another great event,” said Korsakov. “We hope even more people from Waukee and surrounding communities join us to continue growing the tradition and conquering the distance!”

Runners will be well-supported with seven water stations along the course. Three of those will serve Gatorade, one will have gels and four locations will have restrooms.

This year’s Waukee Ten is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15, beginning at 7:00 AM. (The 5K begins one hour later at 8:00 AM.) There’s still time to register—visit www.waukeeten.com for details. Fees begin at $40 through Aug. 21 for the 5K and $55 through the same date for the ten-mile race. Fees for both will increase by $5 beginning Aug. 22.

Participants can look forward to a great post-race experience as well, which will feature music, games, snacks, drinks and the CrossFit FlyOver podium.

Step 3: Place the brackets on the teeth A small amount of glue is placed on the back of each brace, and then a brace is pressed lightly onto each tooth. The doctor carefully positions the bracket in order to achieve the desired movement of the tooth.

Step 4: Light cure the braces The braces stick to the teeth after a blue curing light is shined on them. This special light has a specific wavelength that makes the glue become hard and stay stuck to the teeth.

Step 5: Choose elastic colors and place the wire in the braces Orthodontic wires are the part of the process that moves the teeth. The wire connects all of the braces together and starts the process of slowly moving them.

The wire is tied to the brackets with tiny elastic bands.

These bands can either be clear or colored. The elastic ties are changed at every appointment.

Decreasing Treatment Time: New Indirect Bonding Technique We’ve recently begun using a new technique that allows us to put all of the braces on at one time. It involves using a digital scanner and 3D printer to create trays with very precise bracket locations. This allows us to treat patients faster because the bracket placement is so precise. It also significantly decreases the time it takes to put the braces on and makes the first appointment shorter and more comfortable for the patient.

FACES OF WAUKEE Chad Airhart Tell us about your background and professional career.

I began my collegiate studies with plans to be an art teacher. I began working at the Art Store in Des Moines, and eventually managed the business. I dabbled in the art community selling my own art and that of others I represented. I was the co-owner of McArtor Design Co. until I got into politics in 2003. I worked on numerous campaigns in various positions. In 2014, along with Jason McArtor and his creative director Zachary Kern, we started Goldfinch Media to publish myWaukee Magazine. I sold my stake of the business to Jason early this year to explore other business opportunities.

You are the elected Dallas County Recorder.

When were you elected and can you tell us what you do in this role?

I was first elected in 2010 after defeating a 22-year incumbent. The county recorder records all real estate and real estate related documents. In addition, the county recorder is also the county registrar and keeps vital records (marriage, birth and death), registers off-road vehicles and handles passport applications and passport issues.

What other involvement have you had in the Waukee area?

Prior to being elected recorder, I served as the executive director for the Waukee Area Chamber of Commerce. I also served on the Waukee Planning & Zoning Commission where I served as vice chair. I attended and graduated from the very first class of the Waukee Leadership Institute and eventually served on its Board of Directors and served as president of the board. I was granted their first ever Alumnus of the Year Award.

You recently purchased Pars & Cigars (now Iowa Cigar Co.) in West Des Moines. Tell us about that.

I had been a customer for over a decade and spent many weekends & evenings after work in the smoking lounge. The previous owner passed away last fall and it just fell together and with my business partner Charlie Grask, we purchased the business in March. We have changed the name to Iowa Cigar Co. We offer a great smoking lounge with a new air filtration system & have the largest selection of premium cigars in Iowa; one of the largest selections in the upper Midwest. What accomplishments are you most proud of as recorder?

In my eight years as recorder, my office has always run a budget surplus and hasn’t cost taxpayers a penny to function. Meaning, we bring in more money over the counter for services than we spend on payroll and office functions. In eight years, we’ve returned approximately $2.5 million to the county’s general fund. These funds have helped reduce the property tax burden on the county taxpayer. On top of that, we have made all of our records dating back to 1850 digitized and searchable online. We were the first county in Iowa to accomplish this monumental task.

Did we miss anything?

It has been the honor of my life to serve in public office in Dallas County. I am running for my third term as Recorder in November. I would appreciate everyone’s vote.

Lyn Schafer and Classic Floral the heartbeat of the Downtown Triangle and our Community

Lyn Schafer was born in Portland, Oregon. Her family moved to Iowa in 1962. She has lived in Washington, California, Virginia, South Carolina, Illinois, and Connecticut.

After returning to Iowa with her children and managing a flower shop in Des Moines she heard about the flower shop for sale here in Waukee owned by Rick Husery. In 1990, she came out to look at the Store. By Friday she was the proprietor of Classic Floral and Gifts the business.

A single mother since 1983, Lyn raised 5 children and fostered four others. Lyn worked very hard to help reunite the foster children with their families. Her children are Andrea 47, Erin 44, Michael 42, Jason 38, and Savannah 22. Three of her five children and four foster children attended Waukee Schools.

Classic Floral is not only a business, but the Schafer’s family home. In 1992, Lyn bought the building and later had the North side of the building converted into a home for her family, including their rescue dogs. Classic Floral has been a family affair ever since.

Lyn has fond memories of her grandchildren every Easter hunting for chocolate eggs in the flower shop. Bernice Johnson, an employee recalls finding the missed eggs several weeks after and tossing the stragglers in the fall.

Bernice also fondly recalled a story about of Brandon, the oldest of Lyn’s eight grandchildren, he would hide his toys in the Flower Shop when he was two or three. She would be working and she would find them.

Bernice is family, she helped Lyn with her grandchildren while Lyn made deliveries and has been a friend and loyal sidekick for 25 years. Bernice stated, “If an obstacle is in Lyn’s path, she finds a way around, over, or through it.” Lyn has a big heart and she cares about her customers, she has built relationships with every one of them.

When City Hall, the Post Office, and the Library moved from downtown, it was expected that the downtown would diminish. The downtown businesses rallied together and there was no one more passionate about keeping downtown vital more than Lyn Schafer. She had the vision to see what it could be again and the importance to our community to keep it alive.

Lyn has been a staunch advocate for the Downtown Business Group. The original members of this group were Lyn Schafer, Jerry Wright, Larry Cranel, Sheryl Humphry, Chet Chedester, Joe Stork, and Bill Vasilonikolidaks.

Today, the Triangle Business District boundary starts at the south side of highway 6 including Kum and Go, to south side of Locust to the east side of 4th to 7th Street.

I asked Lyn, What her vision is today for our downtown district she said,” I would like to see a Quilt Shop and a Bike Shop.” Why? She stated, “These would fit best in our business district and would bring more traffic to our area.” These businesses would also fit into our downtown small town feel.

Lyn as President of the Downtown Business Group was instrumental in establishing the Waukee Farmers Market.

This event happens every Wednesday the 1st week in June thru the end of September. Though she will no longer be involved after this September her hard work will be continued for many years by the Downtown Business Group.

Lyn’s most notable accomplishment is working with and being a part of the Downtown Business Group. “It takes a group to accomplish what we have.” They work closely with the city of Waukee in the promotion and preservation of our downtown Triangle business area.

This group in addition to the Farmers Market, helps with the Winter Festival every year, and gives out bananas out to BACooN Ride participants.

Lyn has received several accolades over the years.

Including the Waukee Citizen of the year in 2002. But the beaming look of gratitude she expressed when she showed me her 2017 City of Waukee Proclamation in Recognition of her retirement was priceless. It was a heartfelt thank you for demonstrating her commitment, lending her expertise, and her passion in promoting the Waukee Triangle Business District. “Her positive attitude, energy and enthusiasm will be greatly missed in the Waukee business community.” Lyn stated, “It’s never been about me, it has been about and for the community.”

For 28 years, Lyn Schafer has been the sole owner and operator of Classic Floral on Labor Day of 2018, the shelves will be emptied, the cooler bare, and at closing time a long time staple in our community will be no more. We are sad a buyer for the business could not be found, but the truth, Classic Floral would not be the same without Lyn and Bernice. We understand, it is time for you both to go, but dang it, we don’t like it. Lyn and Bernice good luck to you both, as your new chapters in life begin.
