Left unbalanced it can cause anxiety and nervousness. This soothing herbal blend is caffeine-free and comprises organic chamomile, saffron, licorice, ginger, fennel seeds, rose buds, spearmint, organic rosehips, lemongrass and more. Davids Tea’s blend, $6.50 per 50 grams, tea pot and cup, $38.50 and $19.50.

Mall without the madness Yes, you can avoid stress and shop for the holidays

he mall. It can be a holiday saviour, a one-stopshop for all your holiday gift-giving needs. But it can also turn into a living hell after you’ve been walking in circles for hours battling swelling crowds, aching feet and the urge to hip-check every dawdling slowpoke in sight. But malls are in the business of making your life easier, especially during frenetic high-volume shopping times like the holiday season. In addition to offering specialized services, some of the city’s mega malls have gone high-tech in recent months, implementing a host of features that can make your shopping experience less angst-ridden.

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE Town Crier 2010

Downloadable mobile applications Many of the city’s big shopping centres are on Facebook and Twitter, meaning you can get upto-date information about store promotions. If you’re not into Facebook or Twitter, you can get real-time updates from the malls that have developed apps that can be downloaded to your iPhone or Blackberry. The information can help you plan your trip beforehand, or quickly access information as you start your shopping. Yorkdale Shopping Centre, for instance, recently launched its “App of Luxury” for iPhones and Blackberries and provides realtime updates on promotions and an interactive mall directory. The Dufferin Mall has also created an app for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch that features, among other things, an interactive mall map and a handy “What are you looking for?” search feature that helps you find what you are looking for without searching each individual store.

He recommends checking out the app before leaving home to get a sense of where the parking is. When you get to the mall, there are also traffic signs at the entrance to the parking lot telling you how many spots are available and where, updated every two minutes. When in doubt, go up, he suggests, as people tend to forget about parking being available on the upper decks. Valet parking, available at Yorkdale for $8 a day, is an option if you’re time-crunched and have no problems shelling out the cash.

times. To take the sting away from standing in line for Santa, Fairview Mall is running a daily contest until December 24 where the 40th person in the Santa line wins a $40 gift card and a gift package. This year, Yorkdale tried something new by offering pre-booked appointments with Santa on selected dates in November. Customers signed-up online for a $10 fee which they got back when they ordered their Santa photo package.

Guest Services

Last but not least, remember that every one else in the mall is in the same boat as you, trying to check all the boxes on their holiday shopping list and get in and out as fast as can be. A little patience and sense of humour when waiting in lineups and negotiating those crowds can go a long way. And when all else fails, remember you can finish your shopping trip off by finding a nice resto in the mall and rewarding yourself with dinner and a big glass of vino.

If you’re not the type to plan your visit beforehand, check out the guest services kiosks at the mall for information on store promos, mall maps, stroller rentals, and coat check services. Some malls also have lockers available for coats and extra parcels.

Parking

Moms and kids

Those of us who drive know what a drag finding a parking space can be at a large shopping centre, a nuisance that’s amplified during holiday shopping season. You can, of course, go early or late and do your best to avoid driving in circles for 20 minutes. If you shop at peak times like most people, though, you’ll still have to contend with crowded lots. Yorkdale’s downloadable app has a parking feature that provides stats on parking availability that’s updated every 15 minutes, says mall general manager Anthony Casalanguida.

For those brave enough to go holiday shopping with their kids, knowing where the food court and washrooms are is paramount. The big trend in the city’s malls are family washrooms, which enable moms to nurse, change baby and even heat up food in microwaves in a private room. Many malls rent strollers for a small fee as well. Santa Lineups for Santa may be unavoidable, especially when Santa is available only during certain

Make ’em laugh Xxxxxxxxxxxxxg

All in good fun

T

Gag gifts can add to the holiday cheer

BY Tristan Carter

FRANCIS CRESCIA/TOWN CRIER

he holidays are often a stressful time and if you are in a bit of a tizzy trying to find the perfect gift, maybe this year it’s time to give the gift of laughter. “Everybody becomes a child when you see a joke,” said Anna Zejn, manager of the Ontario Specialty Company, a store that sells all sorts of fun items such as whoopee cushions and hand buzzers. “It’s laughter, you have to laugh. In this society everything’s so stressful so you have to laugh.” Gag gifts and practical jokes can be an excellent choice for those in need of some comic-relief during the holiday season. “A lot of people buy (gag gifts or practical jokes) to do it on another person who’s stressed out,” said Zejn. “It just puts a smile on a person’s face.” However, be warned, these types of gifts are not for everyone. Certain people may find some joke gifts to be offensive, politically incorrect or in poor taste.

“Consider what type of person it is,” Zejn said. “You got to know the person.” In a cautionary tale, Zejn told the story of a man who’s birthday party was held at a bar. One of the gifts he received was a fake lottery ticket which led him to believe he had instantly become a millionaire. “Before anybody knows the guy who thinks he won went up to the bar and decided to buy everybody rounds of drink,” Zejn said. “So I mean it can be dangerous but I think it’s all in good fun.”

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A GAG GIFT • Who am I buying this for and what kind of sense of humour does he or she have? • Where and when will I be giving this gift? Who will be there? • Will I use this gift to play a joke on the person I’m giving it to or to play jokes on others? • Can this gift be used more than once? • Will the recipient use this joke against me?

Shop local

Beyond the mall, close to home

I

Neighbourhood stores have lots to offer BY Kelly Gadzala

t may seem like it’s so much easier to flock to the mall to do your holiday shopping, but what if you want to support local, independent business this holiday season? Can shopping local really be as easy as the mall, and if not, what is the value-add? Eglinton Way Business Improvement Association executive director Carrie Slattery, who says she’s been shopping local for years for her holiday presents, shares some thoughts on why supporting stores on retail streetscapes can be a pleasant and perhaps even easier alternative to the larger shopping centre experience.

1

Experience Shopping local can provide a better, more civilized shopping experience, Slattery says. Many shops offer free gift-wrapping, can do custom orders and some even have delivery services. These store owners also have the flexibility to adjust their hours to better suit their customers. Many of The Eglinton Way BIA merchants, for instance, will be open extended hours for the holiday shopping season, she says.

2

Niche products Often independently-owned stores on local shopping strips have better variety and more niche products you can’t find in the mall, she says, like one of a kind jewellery, coats and jackets, accessories, lingerie and so on. Many also sell a mix of imported and locally produced goods.

3

Feel-good factor A good number of neighbourhood shops are owned by people who live and work in the community, she says, meaning there’s often an investment made in the community. A lot of shop

owners support other stores in the area, she says, by buying their supplies from their neighbours. Others support local charities and give back that way.

4

Village vibe Street shopping areas often provide a pretty village-like environment that’s close to restaurants and cafes, she says. Why not relish the complete experience by dining local?

5

Persnickety parking? True, parking on a busy street where shops are located can sometimes be a hassle. Slattery says most BIAs have websites and will point out convenient locations to park on or near the streetscape, so you can plan your trip, and some may even have special parking initiatives that you can learn about on their respective websites. Some shops along Eglinton Avenue West, such as The Healthy Butcher on Saturdays, offer convenient valet services, she says.

6

The real deal Sometimes, an independent store may have better deals than the larger chain stores. Slattery says she’s personally found that independent shop owners are more willing to negotiate, say, if the item in question is the last one in stock.

7

Family fun Shopping locally can be a fun and entertaining event for the whole family. Many BIAs put on holiday events with entertainment for kids, Santa photos, special deals, tree-lighting ceremonies, and so on. The Eglinton Way’s Holiday Stroll on Eglinton events are Dec. 11 and 18th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. To find a BIA in your area, visit the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas website at www.toronto-bia.com.

Good food

Healthy on the go Junk isn’t the only option

Y

BY Kelly Gadzala ou’ve been shopping for hours and feel like you could eat a house. You want to watch your waistline as you know you’ll be indulging this holiday season, but at this very moment in time you’re shaking with hunger and ready to bite someone’s head off. Dare you hit the food court? Is it really possible to eat a healthy meal or snack at the mall? And, in the near panic of a hunger attack, do you really care? Mary Bamford, registered dietician at the Sports Medicine Specialists at Yonge and Eglinton and owner of midtown-based Essence Nutrition Counseling, says you can eat well at the mall, but it’s more important to get a handle on how you’re feeling when you find yourself in this situation. Bamford advises taking a moment to calm down. “This kind of hunger causes anxiety.” You’ll be far more rational in your food choices if you literally take a breather and ask yourself what you want and what your goal is, she says. Ask yourself if you’re planning on having a meal or just a snack at the mall. “If you know it will be chaos when you get home, take the time to sit down and have a meal,” Bamford says. “If not, have a tea and a snack.” Being aware of what a little indulgence in the food court will mean for you is another strategy you can employ to help you decide what to eat. “You can only have so many treats in a week without gaining weight,” she says. “So ask yourself, do you want your treat to be fries or your sister’s famous shortbread?” It’s okay if it’s the fries that get you through, she adds — it’s all about what you’re prepared to accept for yourself. For example, gaining two or three pounds over the holidays means you have to be prepared for three to four weeks of hard work in January to take the weight off, she says — otherwise those pounds will stay on and you’ll keep adding to them each consecutive year. Knowing your triggers in the mall, where fast food is plentiful, is also important. It’s far too easy to celebrate or de-stress with food and reward yourself after a hard day’s shopping with junk food — actually Bamford says it’s natural.

“Stress does trigger that desire for problematic eating.” Even if you’ve managed to stay clear of the burgers and fries, Bamford says you need to look for the right foods. A combination of carbohydrates and protein — carbs to fuel brain and protein to keep you going — is what you need as carbs on their own will convert to sugars and you’ll crash in an hour, she says. A muffin — perhaps the easiest snack of all to grab when shopping or on the run — is all carbs, she says, and many contain lots of transfats or cheap oil that can add up to 300-500 calories per muffin. “Considering a meal for a woman shouldn’t exceed 500 calories, that muffin will be your dinner.” A better choice would be half a whole grain bagel with a teaspoon of peanut butter on top. If you’re really in a situation where your blood sugar is tanking and you’re shaking, Bamford says a banana is a good choice as it has a high glycemic index (meaning it will boost your blood sugar quickly) — either that or half a cup of juice followed with a protein food within 15 minutes. To avoid those ravenous moments that could lead to a blood sugar crash, get in the habit of carrying snacks with you to see you through, Bamford advises. Protein bars you can find at health stores, with 200 calories or less, will do the trick even though they don’t taste great, she says. And before you hit the shopping centres, make sure you eat a wholesome breakfast like whole grain fibre bread, eggs and milk. While Bamford says you can find healthy food options at the mall, you also need to be critical of your choices. Some food options that are dubbed healthy choices on fast food menus aren’t so healthy — for example there’s a reason you’ll never be able to make your chicken breast as plump and juicy as it is at the fast food counter. “There’s a ton of sodium in that stuff,” she says. “It’s highly processed.” And if you happen to give into the odd fast food craving, sometimes it’s best to admit you’ve succumbed to a craving and move on. “Don’t beat yourself up.”

A wholesome shopping menu Grocery store: Check the cheese section for packages of two hard-boiled eggs or cups of cottage cheese. Eat one and bring the other home.

Coffee shop: Ask for a coffee or tea with steamed milk instead of a latte with all the syrups and sugar added.

Pharmacies: Look for yogurt cups in the refrigerated section.

Food court: • For a meal, try a Chinese or Japanese restaurant; get veggies and meat and throw away the rice. • If you go for Thai, ask for less noodles (a 3/4 of a cup serving is good) and for more veggies (note: you may have to pay extra for the veggies). • Look for grilled chicken and toss out the white bun, or seek out a tuna or salmon sandwich on whole grain.

Health food stores: Buy dried fruits and nuts in a baggy.

– Mary Bamford, Essence Nutrition

Deli counter: A chick pea or three-bean salad will have a good combination of carbs and protein. Some may even have a salad bar where you can add chicken or salmon to your salad.

Three styles for all

Easy chic Dressing well without the worry

A

s the holiday season approaches, the list of mustdos gets longer and longer — and who has time to worry about what to wear to the office party, or how to put together a casual chic outfit for a fam-

ily gathering? Midtown resident Yael Panet knows all about style, and leading a busy life. The personal stylist juggles life as a mother and an independent business owner at Hush Couture (which will soon be re-launching as a “where to find it” Canadian fashion website, www.hushcouture.com). She also pens a weekly mom’s fashion column for Erica Ehm’s online Yummy Mummy Club. This holiday season Panet has searched the city to find the most versatile and easily mixed and matched fashion items for the whole family. These pieces, she says, are staples that can be worn out for dinner, to a cocktail event or even to a cottage party by the fire. Here are her top three holiday picks for women, men and kids, as told in her own words:

photos courtesy promenade mall

Women

1

Sequin Jacket If you buy one standout piece this season, make it a black sequin jacket. This timeless piece can be worn with everything from black pants to dresses to jeans. Be sure to keep the layer underneath relatively simple as the idea is to let the jacket shine on its own. Try it with a blouse or cashmere t-shirt for a luxe yet simple look. Talbots, $299.

2

Bold Bracelet I love accessories and truly believe that they are what make an outfit go from good to great. Currently we are seeing a resurgence of heavy substantial pieces and this style bracelet is a perfect example of just that. I love that it has a tough look to it while the diamonds infuse it with girlishness. The best part about accessories like jewellery is that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get an outstanding piece. Aldo, $23.99.

3

Sparkly Pumps Keeping in the festive tradition of all that shines, shoes are a great accessory to use when looking to add some bling. This season we are seeing loads of embellished shoes on the runways and in stores. I like the idea of a platform pump as they are totally current and add extra height creating a fabulous long and lean effect. Don’t worry about over doing it if you are already donning a shiny piece — there is no better time to stand out than during the holidays. Steve Madden, $125.

Kids

1

Plaid Shirt There’s something about a little boy in a plaid shirt that seems to go hand in hand. Paired with jeans, chinos, cargos or slacks, a plaid shirt is just about the easiest nobrainer look to make a boy look put together and handsome. Almost every children’s store sells a version of the plaid shirt, making it simple to find. Gymboree, $24.50.

2

Tutu Skirt Most little girls have a rather serious opinion on what they want to wear in order to most accurately represent their personalities. I think that kids look the best when they are dressed the way they feel most comfortable. Unless they are attending a black tie function, I see no reason to stuff them into an uncomfortable ensemble and watch them squirm all night. My daughter loves anything girly and cool, and this tutu skirt is the perfect example of just that. Paired with a faux leather jacket and a t-shirt, this is an easy way to let your little diva look stylish and hip. The Children’s Place, $14.62.

3

Metallic Shoes Metallic-tone shoes are the perfect way to finish off a little girl’s outfit. Long gone are the days of heels for kids; today it’s all about the metallic sneaker. A pair based on the Converse model looks adorable with a skirt, dress or leggings. The metallic colour adds some shine and sparkle to an outfit for the upcoming holiday season. Old Navy, $16.50.

1

Men

Relaxed Blazer Men’s blazers tend to duplicate themselves and can look redundant if they are without detail. A stunning gray wool blazer has an interesting unfinished feel to it and provides a more relaxed look than its typical single-breasted starched lapel predecessor. It can worn with both jeans and dress pants and would be the perfect choice for a dinner party or stylish event. Zara, $99.

2

Wool Pants Every man should own at least one pair of pleat-free wool tailored pants. I believe they are best represented in either black or grey as they can be worn with practically anything on top. An easy selling feature of these pants is that they can be worn day or night and dressed up accordingly. Banana Republic, $124.

3

Straight Leg Jeans There is nothing hotter than a man in a perfect fitting pair of jeans. Worn with a blazer, button down shirt or sweater they are the most important piece in a man’s wardrobe. Whether it’s a cozy night in with friends or a night out on the town, jeans are an easy go-to piece that are comfortable and can finish off a look effortlessly. Gap, $69.50. 2010 HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE Town Crier

Global traditions

Christmas world around

the

NAUGHTY OR NICE? At Christmas in Austria good little boys and girls get a visit from St. Nicholas, while those who aren’t get a visit from Krampus, right.

Not everyone celebrates the same way

I

BY Shawn Star n Canada many celebrate Christmas by going to mass, decorating a tree, having a family feast and giving gifts, but that’s just us. Other countries don’t necessarily celebrate the way we do here, and in some cases they’re completely different. Here are 10 places and some of their practices that you probably haven’t heard of.

A

ustria Here, it is believed that St. Nicholas has an evil twin, named Krampus whose purpose it is to punish children who have been naughty. So, much like Halloween being followed by All Saints Day, Austrians celebrate Krampus Night on Dec. 5, the eve of St. Nicholas Day. People dress up in demon-like costumes and march through town, often in parades.

J

apan Much of the religious imagery of Christianity is prevalent at Christmas time, though only one percent of the Japanese population is Christian. Instead fried chicken has become a staple of the Christmas feast in Japan, and is often accompanied by Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. On New Years’ Day, the Japanese clean their houses and drive out evil spirits in hopes of bringing in good luck.

30

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE Town Crier 2010

N

orway Again, a Halloween-y theme comes up, but this time in more than one way. On Christmas Eve, it is customary to hide the brooms in the house, because tradition dictates that witches come out on that night and try to fly around. Also, once Christmas is over, children in Norway celebrate Julebukk by dressing up in costumes, and going door-to-door, much like trick-or-treating.

I

raq On Christmas Eve, a bonfire is made with thorn bushes. Tradition says that if the fire burns the bushes to ashes, then the next year will be full of good luck. However, whether it produces ashes or not, everyone attempts to bring more good luck by taking a turn at jumping over the remnants of the bonfire three times and making a wish — done after the fire is out.

F

inland Now here’s a country that knows how to get in from the cold. On Christmas Eve, Finnish people go to the sauna. Later in the evening, a sort of Polkadot Door-esque event occurs. The father goes to do chores, and Joulupukki (Santa Claus) comes to the door to bring presents to the children. He doesn’t have far to travel though, since Finns believe he lives in their country.

S

erbia Gift-giving does not occur on Christmas Day, but rather on three consecutive Sundays preceding it. The gifts are given as a sort of ransom, as the first Sunday, children are tied to chairs or each other and untied only when they “pay the ransom”, or give gifts. The same practice is done with the mother the next Sunday, and then finally with the father on the third Sunday.

DESERT REINDEER? In Syria kids believe that it the youngest of the wisemen’s camels that brings them gifts during the Yuletide.

Skating to church in Venezuela S

yria Presents are not given by Santa, and they aren’t found under the tree. Instead, children leave hay and water for a camel. And he’s no ordinary camel either he’s the youngest of the ones that brought the three wise men to Bethlehem. When morning comes, presents are found where the hay and water used to be.

I

taly In a strange twist, it is a commonly demonized character, La Befana, a witch, who is associated with Christmas. She is believed to have been busy when Jesus was born, and missed the birth. Tradition holds that she is still looking for him and flies around on her broomstick, leaving presents at every house in case the baby Jesus is there. This does not occur until the Epiphany, which takes place on Jan. 6.

V

enezuela The streets in the capital city of Caracas are closed to vehicles until 8 a.m. Christmas morning. Not as a means of keeping families at home and together, but because it is customary to roller skate to church. Children also go to bed the night before with string tied to their toes with the other end dangling out the window. This way, the roller skaters can tug the string and wake the children.

G

reenland For those unaccustomed to different cuisine preferences, this might not sound so appetizing, but in Greenland it’s tradition. The customary dish is Kiviak, raw auk (a seabird) flesh wrapped in sealskin that has been buried for months. Mattak, which is whale skin with some blubber, is usually given as a gift. While it apparently tastes like coconut it’s tough to chew and is often swallowed whole.

BY Shawn Star t’s Christmas Eve and your doorbell rings. It’s your friendly neighbour — who you totally forgot about — and they have something for you. You have no time to think, but you have to give them something. It happens. Luckily, with some help from Rowley Ocampo, owner of Rolo (an acronym for Realm of Ludicrous Objects) gift store in Yorkville, you won’t have to reach for the nearest bottle of wine or your mother-in-law’s fur coat this time around. Ocampo has all sorts of knick knacks and specialty gifts geared toward just about any kind of person, which will prevent you from giving a simple “you shouldn’t have”. Here are five helpful suggestions to keep on hand for those off-the-cuff, ‘What-do-I-do-what-do-I-do’ gift-giving moments – and all for under $20.

Drinks on the go This is also bound to impress any surprise gifter at the door. Ocampo even said he keeps some handy at home in case of this very incident.
