2018 Daffodil Marine Parade Grand Marshals P/C Walt & Leslie Burton
From the Bridge . . .
Jim Martinek Commodore
Bill Guthrie Vice Commodore
April is the month that symbolizes spring, the time when buds open and flowers bloom and with warmer days and more activities than you can imagine at the Yacht Club. The Daffodil land parade is coming up April 7th. The Puyallup Daffodil Parade is the biggest of all the daffodil parades and the longest, but worth the time to see the families that line the sidewalks with their families waving. Bill Foulk, who organizes the parade, keeps us all in step. The Color Guard leads the way as we proudly march through the streets of downtown Tacoma and Puyallup representing our pride and joy – Tacoma Yacht Club. Speak to Bill Foulk or Nancy Williams to see how you can play a part in the Land parade. They always need volunteers to walk; perhaps you will be on television. The Poulsbo Cruise was a huge hit with the theme “Vikings come to Poulsbo” hosted by our youngest cruising member, Lydia Cameron with help from her Dad and Mom, Mike and Karen Cameron. There were 88 attendees at the dinner on Saturday night. The catered dinner was at the Poulsbo Yacht Club, with the dice game bunco following the evening activities. Scoil Rince Slieveloughane (a traditional Irish Dance group), entertained the club on the night of the March 23rd at Pub Night. For those in attendance they experienced a great show from the kids. Then off to the games; darts, ping pong, cribbage, basketball toss and prizes. Daffodil Princess Tea and dinner is hosted by Karen Striech and Hether Nelson. An event you will want to bring your children or grandchildren. By now the Princesses have been groomed and prepared for their year as princesses as they represent their schools. The biggest event of the year comes in a couple of weeks, the Daffodil Marine Parade and Festival. LeAnne Tanner, Daffodil Chairperson and her sub-committees have been working very hard to put this event together. Come and see what is going on April 13, 14 and 15th at the club. You will be amazed at what you see. Redneck Rockabilly, Jeopardy, live bands both Friday and Saturday night along with the marine parade where boats are decorated to represent this year’s theme “Traditions in Bloom. The parade leaves Tacoma Yacht Club around 11:30 and follows Ruston Way along the waterfront. The parade boats will turn around at our outstation in downtown Tacoma and return to TYC for the awards ceremony. The grounds at the club are looking great and lead to the future of what we will see as we begin to evolve into the future. With the thoughts of the entry way improvements will certainly lead to other developments over time. We must understand this takes time with deliberate decisions leading down a path of improvements. This cannot all be done at once as we once thought. With each step will lead to a better more beautiful club we will all enjoy for many years to come. Reflecting back to 1972 when they finished this building and how that must have felt to the visionaries of the time. Commodore Jim Martinek “Aquaholic”

BASIN CLOSURE For Daffodil
The TYC Basin and the Dock Street Outstation will be closed to TYC members from 1200 hours on Thursday April 12th through 1700 hours on Sunday April 15th, 2018
Come to the April 4th General Meeting and get to know your candidates running for the elected offices. You will hear brief remarks concerning their qualifications, vision for the club and what makes them uniquely qualified to represent the membership on the Board and Bridge. As with each year Brad Baker these are candidates willing to give of their Chairman time and expertise to further the legacy of the club and keep us moving forward. The Capital Budget is also being voted on at this month’s meeting. As a reminder the presentation and general overview of each project can be found on the club’s website. Take a minute to refresh yourself on the individual projects and be sure to reach out with any questions you might have as there will not be a formal presentation at the general meeting this month. Absentee ballots can also be obtained through the office for those wishing to participate that way. We look forward to taking action on the projects being proposed. Each month there are so many individuals and groups to thank for the volunteering of their time. This month of particular note was the outstanding effort by Bonnie and the House & Grounds team for the successful completion of the landscaping around the clubhouse. It really looks great! To Marsha and the Membership Committee for putting together a great Open House that attracted several visitors and prospective members on a clear and sunny Sunday afternoon where we got to show off our club and what we have to offer. There were lots of engaging conversations going on and I could sense the pride of members sharing their stories with the guests. Nice work! Last but not least to LeAnne and Kelly Tanner and the entire Daffodil Committee for all of the planning and preparation going on for what I know will be another great event in April. This is a huge event for the club and it takes an army (with great leadership!) to pull it off. Take care, Brad Baker Chairman, Board of Trustees

In March, Shipmates enjoyed a great tour of the Governor’s Mansion in Olympia and learned many of its rich stories. Designed by Ambrose Russell in 1908, the red brick Georgian-style building was full of treasures. Adding to our fun, we had an interesting prefunction tour of Ann Martin’s historic home designed by the same architect with a fascinating history update by Renèe Paine. The day was complete with a delicious lunch at P/P Lynn Evan’s family restaurant, Chelsea Farms Oyster Bar. Thank you all for arranging such entertaining events. Did you see the Easter Snoopy Bunny visit TYC? Did you find any Easter eggs? With record attendance, Shipmates Ann Martin, P/P Doraine Robertson and Marilyn Ripley did an amazing job hosting the annual Bunny Brunch. The sounds of kid’s laughter enjoying story time, the egg hunt, and of course our special guest was so
fun to watch! The heart of Shipmates fundraising centers on youth marine programs. Shipmates were honored to be part of the Bridge of Honor ceremony that celebrated the achievements of our local Sea Scouts of Ship 110, the Charles N. Curtis. It is so rewarding to see the accomplishments of these young men and women and watch the strength of their leadership capabilities grow. April is here and so is Daffodil’s “Traditions in Bloom”. Our two TYC Daffodil liaisons, P/P Phyllis Hayes and P/P Jean Hayes, work hard every year to promote these gifted young women. Shipmates’ Hether Nelson and Karen Streich are hosting the Daffodil Princess Tea and Dinner where Shipmates present a $1000 Scholarship to Miss Congeniality and give each princess a personalized Daffodil polo shirt. Don’t forget to purchase your Daffodil polo shirt and support our princesses. There are so many activities to participate in during Daffodil weekend at TYC and please come join us for the Daffodil Land Parade on April 7. I’m excited to share that we have two new Shipmate members, Kathy Booth and Donna Losch. Please take a few moments to introduce yourself and say “Hi”. President Pam

Again we are saying “Our Members” are truly amazing! Our Spring Cleanup on March 24 had a turnout of 32 Heather Larsen & workers. They all Bonnie Shaffer pitched in with great Co-Chairs enthusiasm for the following tasks: planting and more planting in the new landscape and/or in the newly purchased blue pots (thanks to Heather), painting, cleaning/organizing Michelle’s storage area, moving bark, hanging Daffodil decorations, touching up our TYC sign on the ferry side (thanks Lance), building benches and shelves…and more. And all this was accomplished without rain!! You will notice the newly painted front doors…thank you to Dave and Gail Oxford. A sincere thank you to all for enhancements made to our Club for the Open House and Daffodil Weekend. Please check out our new landscape plantings. We are working with a contractor for a solution to the geese problem. Another option is to hire “Mack Martinek” (owners Commodore Jim and Janet). I understand Mack’s rates may be a bit too high for the H&G budget….Darn! House & Grounds meets the first Wednesday of each month at 6 PM in the Crow’s Nest. This is prior to the TYC General meeting. We are always looking for new members to join our committee.

Candidate for Rear Commodore Thank you to both nominating committees for considering me as the candidate to serve our membership as the incoming rear commodore. I was certainly surprised and honored. My husband Paul and I understand and accept the duties and obligations of this four year commitment; Paul is a past commodore with Day Island Yacht Club. As a couple, we have been continuously engaged in boating since I met him on his 8 Meter Reinell in 1981. In 2005, one boat and two children later, we joined Day Island Yacht Club. We quickly realized that participation is absolutely essential to fully enjoy club membership. In 2008, I was elected to the DIYC board of trustees as the secretary. In subsequent years, I served on various committees and appointments and was recognized with several perpetual plaque awards. First, I was awarded the Woman of the Year in 2010 and the Commodore’s Award in 2011. In 2012, we were the recipients of the Boating Family of the Year award and Paul was elected as Rear Commodore. We engaged in every one of the Grand Fourteen events, Heavy Weather, Opening Day and of course Daffodil Weekend. We finished Paul’s commodore journey in June of 2015. In 2016, I was awarded the Golden Burgee award and Woman of the Year for a second time in 2017. We joined Tacoma Yacht Club in the spring of 2016, frankly for the outstations and dining facilities. We soon learned that TYC is so much more than those amenities. We are a business that proudly bears our city’s name with
a longstanding tradition of serving the community. There are two factors that instilled me with the joy of serving. One factor is my 25 year career with Pierce Transit. I started as a coach operator but particularly enjoyed the later sales and customer service position before I retired. The other influencing factor is that I grew up in a military household where “Stepping up” was a way of life. Perhaps that is why, on the same day we joined TYC, I joined the TYC Honor Guard. The last two years I found myself volunteering to help with Labor Day, Memorial Day and Special Peoples cruises, Ranger Regattas, Cinderella Balls, and Commodore Balls plus agreed to Co-Chair the 2018 Daffodil Princess Tea and Dinner. Truth be told, I am bit of a social butterfly and I enjoy the social side of participation. Since the three commodore positions are considered the social facilitators of the club, it is a good fit for me. I am all about service, social contribution and fun. Paul and I are very excited to work with the bridge, board, staff and membership. We are grateful for this opportunity to be ambassadors of TYC to the local community and our boating community. Thank you for your trust and confidence in me. I will certainly do my best to work diligently to preserve the club’s future and promote engagement with our greatest assets…the staff and membership!

Candidate for Board of Trustees Lester and I have been Tacoma Yacht Club members since 2005. Some of you may know us from the Wollochet Outstation where Lester and I lived aboard Home Run for 10+ years as Caretakers at that wonderful TYC asset. From the beginning

of our membership we have both been an active in the club. Not only was I Lester’s assistant caretaker, but I have attended most general meetings, helped on many committees (Commodore's Ball, Daffodil etc.), was the Marketing Chair, Fleet Captain (once officially, and once as the person in the background), Lighted Boat Parade Chairperson, participated in the Daffodil Festival (in many capacities), including hosting the Wounded Warriors in the Daffodil Parade, and have been on many summer cruises and regular TYC cruises, as host and participant. I am currently the Chairperson for the Outstation Committee and am hoping we can keep our outstations in good repair so we can all enjoy them. I am active in the Shipmates and have been on their Board for five years. Two as a Trustee and three as the Shipmates Treasurer. In other words, I am at the club helping or just enjoying the company of other members a lot. I want to be a part of the Board of Trustees because I have seen the ups and downs of this club, but now as I see the club moving forward in some very exciting ways and I want to be a part of that. I have been a member for a number of years but I am hoping to bring a new perspective to the board. I believe in that the future of TYC is one that we can all be proud of, but I want to ensure we make this forward move in a responsible manner to be able to maintain our club growth and attract younger members with families so we can make TYC attractive to all boaters and nonboaters. I believe I can, and have, adapted to the ever-changing landscape of the club and it's members. I promise to listen to all members and help to find solutions not just talk about solutions. I know that TYC is a business and I see the potential with the right management for TYC to continue to be the Jewel of the Puget Sound Boating Community. I will touch lightly on my work experience and background because it is a part of who I am and how I think. I retired after a 27-year career as a civilian employee with the Navy and Army. I represented the shipyard in high level meetings at PSNS, and other shipyards, and was an on-site (1yr assignment) program manager in Washington D.C. as part of the Navy’s Environmental Solutions Program. I managed multi-million-dollar budgets for the overhauls of navy vessels. One of the favorite jobs I had was as an Engineering Technician in the design department where I was one of a group who flew onto the USS Kitty Hawk to develop plans for putting Women on board aircraft carriers. While
working for the Army I was a Manpower Manager for three large LewisMcCord departments. My last position, before I retired, was a Human Resources Specialist where I trained new employees, wrote technical procedures and employee handbooks, participated in contract negotiations, mediated employee/employer complaints and created resolutions that the employee, the union, and the Shipyard were agreeable to. As I said I provide you with my background only because it is a part of who I am and can show you that I am a team player and have the skills to think on my feet and find solutions based on everything I hear and see. I am organized, practical and forward thinking and know how to make decisions on my own or within a group. I want to hear your concerns or questions, and I don’t have a problem with speaking up if I need to. I sincerely hope you will vote for me to be on the Board of Trustees and thank you for your consideration.

Candidate for Board of Trustees Pier Fun – 1992 Bayliner MY3288 A member of the Tacoma Yacht Club since August 2000 as a Social member and an Active Moorage member with a boathouse on “B” dock March 2006, I have two passions: flying and boating. For the last two years I have volunteered on the TYC Finance Committee and the last year appointed to the Planning Committee. As TYC moves forward I believe my business background and competences of over 35 years of experience in business management specializing in highly regulated industries (aviation and education) will prove to be an asset to the club.
WHAT CAN I DO FOR TYC? I am known for my innovative approach to problem solving and creating positive outcomes. My strategy to problem solving is to identify, analyze, develop and implement value added systems, solutions and services. Our members and guests warrant continued and enhanced quality staff, facilities, services and products in a safe, secure and enjoyable atmosphere. A couple of my guiding principles are: • I believe if you consume oxygen – you are a leader. No matter who you are, where you work, what you do – you are a leader. • Systems are meant to be efficient and serve people - so people are effective. Not the other way around. • People need to know – the good or the not so good. They can handle it and maybe come up with a solution. Airport Management Group, Auburn Municipal Airport, Auburn, WA Since 2004, I have served as the Airport Manager for the Auburn Municipal Airport the third busiest airport in the State. Working with the City of Auburn, Federal Aviation Administration and Aviation Division of WSDOT many major infrastructure improvements have been completed. DONALD KELLEY
Candidate for Board of Trustees I have been a practicing attorney for 46 years in Tacoma. In addition, in the last 29 years I have been serving as a mediator in litigation cases, presiding over more than 5,000 litigation or pre-litigation matters. I will be retiring in May of this year. Mary and I have been enjoying boating at the Tacoma Yacht Club first on a 36’ Nauticat motorsailer (“Providence”). Last year we purchased Alan and Becky Rencowski’s Meridian 490 cruiser, renaming her “Providence,” which we keep in a boathouse on the F Dock. I served as President of the Tacoma Lawn Tennis Club for 2 years in the 1990’s during which we were able to substantially rehabilitate that facility as well as grow the membership significantly. I am also a 40 year member of St Luke’s Episcopal Church where I have served in a wide variety of positions including parish Chancellor for 20 years.
MOORAGE MEMBERS:
Please remember to return your dock carts to the top of the ramp after using so the next member does not have to search for an available cart.
Well, it is now April of 2018, and we’re nearly 2 years into this major project and you have to admit, we have seen a very dramatic change V/C Bill Guthrie in the landscape Chair around our club. The guards will have to wait a little longer to occupy the new gate house. The occupancy approval is not in hand as of this date. It is expected later in April. The entrance to the TYC property is appearing a lot more formal with the new entrance traffic island. Work on the MetroParks side of the peninsula remains ongoing, but major progress is evident. The huge rockery walls on the sail mounds are complete, the pavilion (restrooms and multifunction room) walls have been poured, and a very large portion of the plantings (trees, shrubs, and grasses) are in the ground. And, speaking of plantings, have you noticed our own plantings? Bonnie Shaffer has spent an entire week with Signature Landscaping Company, supervising the placement and installation of over a 1000 plants. Thank you, Bonnie! Members will also notice a large number of rocks and boulders have been installed around the clubhouse. The anchors that have been stored in the basement since early in the project were brought out by ATK employees and placed where directed. And next, the installation of a rock paver pathway from the flag plaza to the eastern lawn area, followed by the blowing-in of a fine red bark mulch to finish the project. Members of our House and Grounds committee were summoned to ‘tweak’ the landscape just after the Signature team departed. They had to dig a few of the smaller plants out of the mulch. It looks great! And yes, the long-awaited gangways have been installed…. all five are in place. You are reminded the A-dock ramp will not be usable until lot A is done. As the members have been briefed much earlier, they are steep, especially at low tides. But they are not as steep as our previous ramps, just a lot longer. And no stairs. The new gates are yet to come and will be installed at the top end of each gangway when they arrive. Regarding the steepness of incline, these ramps are in compliance with all locally imposed codes but were exempt from ADA requirements. The director of Pierce County ADA pointed out marina gangways do not have to comply, per an existing exemption, if they are at least 80’ long. The incline will vary with the tides and, depending on the specific gangway location, will be between 14 and 19 degrees. Members using these gangways are reminded that the best time to load/unload your vessel will be at the higher tides. Great caution is advised when moving loaded dock carts up and down the ramps. Don’t overload. We are actively seeking additional means of moving cargo up and down these ramps. The next item to report is regarding the parking lot. The parking stalls along reach B have been striped and the wheel stops installed. And, the parking divider islands have been irrigated, filled, and planted. These will be turned over to our House and Ground Committee for maintenance. The new sliding gate for the main parking lot will be installed the first week of April but will not be activated until the gate house controls are in place sometime later in the month. And the final paving piece connecting reach B with Yacht Club Road is getting closer with the completion of the extensive underground work done at the entrance. And lot A. It is hard to see as you are driving by, but the moment slab next to the MSE wall is nearing completion. The reinforcement steel has been installed and ready for the pouring of concrete. Adjacent to this is the barrier wall that will prevent vehicles from interfering with the MSE wall. Once this is done, the final fill to grade can be
TYC Peninsula Committee
accomplished, followed by paving. The new maintenance building, complete with a restroom and shower, and the enclosed used oil house will be constructed. Don’t expect this much before the end of summer. And lastly, the camel dock brackets have been installed by Marine Floats and the camel dock floated into place and lined up with the launch pier piling. Just in time to support upcoming sailing events. Another item to put in the ‘done’ bucket! As always, thank you for your understanding and patience. Regards, VC Bill Guthrie, RC Joe Guizzetti, BOT Chairman Brad Baker TEXTING WHILE BOATING If you’re texting from the helm, you’re likely not helming the boat.” Will Matson As your Fleet Chair Surgeon, my focus is to help prepare and remind members of medical issues that could affect you and your family while boating. This includes practices to prevent illness and/or injuries. Although it’s difficult to determine how many boating accidents actually happen as a result of boat operators or lookouts texting or using electronic devices such as cellphones, laptops and tablets, there’s little doubt such activities could contribute to the problem. Rapid growth in the use of wireless devices wreaks havoc for operators of all types of vehicles, including boats. Personally, I consider myself lucky when on one occasion my attention was diverted to a text on my phone. As I was reading it, I just missed a log in the water. Not only was I shaken, but those on the boat were too. Just a few moments of inattention can lead to accidents, injuries or even death when boats collide, objects in the water go unnoticed, or a craft capsizes because the driver didn’t see large waves or wakes due to focusing on a cellphone or on electronic device. It is vital that to operate a boat safely, the driver must focus their full attention on being “the captain” and set their electronic devices aside until they are safely docked, relieved of the helm, or come to a stop.

I have been working with Bonnie Armstrong (a new member) to learn more about the Monica Guthrie large model ship that Chair TYC has had for many years. We learned that the ship was made by N.C. Garrison and was donated to the club in the 1930’s. The model is a bark design. The Foss Waterway Seaport Museum has three model ships by N.C. Garrison. They are the USS Constitution, Rose Lee, and the Emma Fox. We are looking into having one their volunteers do some repairs on the bark’s rigging and re-glue the white striping that has come loose. Mr. Nepean Cameron (N. C.) Garrison has an interesting background. He was born in 1875 in Halifax, Nova Scotia and went to sea as a youth. At the age of 15 he was master of a fishing schooner. Later he served his time in deep water square riggers. He came to Tacoma in 1903 as a carpenter/contractor. During World War II he worked in the rigging loft at the Seattle-Tacoma Shipyards. He had been retired for several years. He took up the hobby of carving ship models in 1929 and in that time turned out 30 models – schooners, barks, barkentines, fullrigged ships, tugs and steamers. Old time sailers have called his models perfect replicas of famous wind-jammers. Many of the vessels had appeared in downtown store windows. N.C Garrison, a Tacoman known up and down the Pacific Coast for his extensive collection of hand-built sailing vessels passed away at the age of 78, on December 31, 1953. Russell Garrison, one of his sons was a member of Tacoma Yacht club during the 1930’s time frame. Bonnie and I will continue to gather more information about our “ship”. It would be nice to have it appraised and displayed in a new showcase for all to see.
As Spring arrives it is time for taking a good look at our owned outstations (ORO BAY, AND Linda Dent WOLLOCHET Chairman BAY) with an eye to putting them into “cruising” ready mode. Although they have been open all winter long we do annual spring cleaning to prepare for the spring and summer cruisers. So please SAVE THE DATE(s) for the Oro Bay Work Party Spring Cleanup on Saturday April 28 at 9 AM. Come Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, by boat or other means, and bring your rakes, shovels, pruning shears, and any other garden tool you can think of and join us for what is really a fun time! Saturday we will provide you with a free Lunch for volunteering your time to help us. If you can’t come by boat, please come by car via the Steilacoom/Anderson Island ferry, we’d love to have any and all help. We will also hold a Work Party for the Wollochet Bay Outstation on Saturday June 16 at 9AM. This is just before we hold the annual Evergreen Cruise, where the Pierce County Chamber of Congress and various Military Members are invited to cruise and lunch at our Outstation. With that in mind we would like to invite you to come by boat or car (plenty of parking) as we’ll need as many hands we can get to “Spruce UP” the outstation for visitors. Again, we will be providing lunch for those who volunteer your time. There is always a lot more to do at Wollochet, only because we have the clubhouse etc.…, but we also have a good time working together to make our outstation shine. These work parties are a great place for new members to see what we’re talking about when we report on the outstations, and it is a great place to meet your fellow members in a fun atmosphere. If you’re not sure how to get there, the directions and address are in the yearbook, or just let me know and I will help guide you. SIGN UP NOW ON THE TYC WEBSITE SO WE CAN ENSURE EVERYONE GETS A LUNCH!!!! If you have any questions please talk to me at the meeting or email me at Rhome4me@hotmail.com. Thanks – Linda Dent, Outstations Chairperson.

With your help as your Chaplain, I am truly blessed to assist our members as we deal with a myriad Rick Hansen of physical and Chaplain mental illnesses. Thank you for your prayers and well wishes I frequently remind myself and others that moderate exercise, both mental and physical, can be very helpful in minimizing and overcoming our health problems. Many people credit meditation in helping improve your quality of life. Scheduling some time for yourself is also important. Fellow Tacoma Yacht Club member Ted Reyhner, is now recovering from heart surgery. Please join me in thanking the doctors and nurses that helped him through his surgery. Others that can use our prayers are Tom Madin, Heather Larsen, Barbara Farron, Ann Marie Batti’e, Gary Bennett and Mike Hoffman. May we be thankful for all people who help others in time of sickness or sorrow. Thank you for your prayers. I encourage you to share information with me regarding those in our Club who are hurting or suffering so that we can pray that God’s ever-present grace may help us. Please contact me by email at rick@hansencomm.com or call me direct at 253-380-2663.
