Nevada Day - Las Vegas Gets an Early Start for National Adoption Month
N
evada Day is on October 31st: the day we celebrate our state’s birthday. Nevada’s birthday happens to coincide with another fun holiday, Halloween. In downtown Las Vegas, there is a family court judge who has chosen to take both of these holiday festivities a step further by making it even more special. District Judge Cynthia Giuliani started a tradition in her courtroom several years ago. Each year, she celebrates both of these merriments by granting adoptions. Judge Giuliani does it in style by dressing up as a fairy godmother on this very special day in a young child’s life. Judge Giuliani says, “I want to make their adoption a memorable event for both the child and their adoptive family. Seeing the smiles on their faces as I wave my magic wand ‘granting’ them the wish of a family is one of the most satisfying things I do as a family court judge. Children deserve a permanent and stable life.”
How fitting for a judge that is a member of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ), a Nevada-based international non-profit, to bring up this important issue of adoption on the eve of National Adoption Month. Mari Kay Bickett, CEO of the National Council states, “Over 400,000 children are in foster care. The NCJFCJ and its members have been critical to the success of National Adoption Day; a single day each year – the Saturday before Thanksgiving – on which courts in all jurisdictions open their doors just to finalize and celebrate foster care adoptions.” And that is why every year in November, NCJFCJ furthers the larger collective goal to raise public awareness of the needs of foster children in every community across the United States. Every day in America, children who entered the foster care system as victims of abuse or neglect become available for adoption. Most children will wait at

least three years for their forever family before being adopted. We can only hope that in the future, the magic of a loving family would come together with these children much sooner. MV

his fall less is more. The fresh face (no makeup) look is always in season. Makeup is evolving this fall towards a more polished look. We are defining the face without changing it. The look of skin is in. Ultimately the first impression should be the skin. Strong graphic brows and bold lips complement the look. Light pink cheeks and luminous cheek bones will add the warmth and definition to the face. To get the skin looking dewy and supple I prefer the MAC Cosmetics Studio Sculpt Foundation and MAC Mineralized Skin Finish
to set the foundation. Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz eyebrow pencil is my pick for natural, beautiful eyebrows. Applying a lot of fine strokes will make the brows look more natural. To showcase key elements of fall makeup, focus on subtle caramel tones on the eyes. To keep the eyes soft and feminine use the Natural Palette from NYX cosmetics, this is one of the most affordable ways to achieve the look. Lips can be nude for the daytime and bold for the evening. Tarte Cosmetics LipSurgence Lip Crèmes are both moisturizing and have intense color payoffs.
By Mari Alan Professional Makeup Artist
It’s about preparing the skin to make the face look its best. Skin is the priority here. When prepping the skin, we don’t want to see the products or texture. It’s there but it’s not. We want to focus on priming the skin and perfecting it in a very precise way. Let’s talk about the skin essentials. To prepare the skin for the no makeup look, where the skin is priority, prepping and polishing is essential. Good clean skin is the way to start. Philosophy’s Purity Made Simple cleanser is one of my favorites. It removes eye and face makeup without irritation. With natural makeup, every detail has to be considered. Moisturized and primed skin will help the makeup to go on smoothly and makeup will last longer. I don’t like adding too many products to the skin so I prefer products that are multipurpose. MAC cosmetics Prep+Prime natural radiance does just that. This primer has a built in glow and gives instant dimension to the face as well as it moisturizes. For dryer skin, strobe cream from MAC is hydrating and aluminizing to the skin. Now your skin will be prepped and primed and it’s ready to showcase the makeup in the most polished and radiant way possible. There is a kind of honesty to beauty this season. Lastly, highlight your cheek bones with Hourglass Cosmetics Ambient Lighting Palette for a healthy glow. Makeup is all about your own signature look so have fun with it! It’s not so much about a dramatic transformation of a woman, but it’s a very beautiful enhancement! For all of your makeup questions or concerns, feel free to email me at: vegasvibemakeup@gmail.com. Skin Care for Fall
N
ow that fall is right around the corner do you find your skin suffering from months of harsh summer rays? We all have good intentions when it comes to protecting our skin but for those times when you forget to apply or reapply your sunscreen your skin can pay the price. If you’re the type of person who likes to use natural over store bought then try this combo on your next sunburn to calm redness.
1.
Apply pure aloe gel straight from the aloe plant rather than the bottle.
2.
Follow with an application of rice bran oil which boasts high quantities of Vitamin E that encourages healing.
3.
Repeat this process several times a day until you have relief from your redness.
It’s also a good idea to reduce your alcohol and caffeine which contributes to dehydration during this time. Water is your best friend, so be sure and drink a lot of it! If you’re more of a traditionalist and don’t want to take the time to create your own remedy then a great choice to try is Ocean Potion Moisturizing Aloe Lotion. Don’t let the name fool you. It has great reviews, reasonably priced and is widely available. The Ocean Potion Moisturizing Aloe Lotion is an after-sun moisturizing lotion that maintains your tan and prevents peeling. Made naturally with pure aloe vera gel, tea tree oil and herbal and seaweed extracts, the Ocean Potion lotion replenishes and repairs skin cells after exposure to the sun. This moisturizing skin lotion also contains vitamins A, C and E and can be used all year round as a daily moisturizer for smoother and younger looking skin. ave a minute? If so, you can get your heartrate up and elevate your athletic abilities. I know, sounds incredible – and
it is.
Call to book your appointment today! An author of a recent New York Times article calls a new interval program her ‘favorite’ – “The essentials of 10-20-30 training are simple. Run, ride, or perhaps row on a rowing machine gently for 30 seconds, accelerate to a moderate pace for 20 seconds, then sprint as hard as you can for 10 seconds,” writes Gretchen Reynolds.
702.254.8568 | 2620 Regatta Dr, Suite 113 | spaatlakeside.com
The program is based off a Denmark study, which realized previous interval training focused on ‘motivated athletes’ in a highly monitored scientific setting. While appropriate for a laboratory, it’s not reflective of your one-sizefits-most workout plan. So researchers created a training routine applicable to the ‘nonexperienced person to the elite athlete.’ I had to try it for myself. For the record, I am a certified yoga, spin and pilates instructor but I wouldn’t call myself an athlete. Now onto the routine: a gentle jog for 30 seconds; a run for 20 seconds; full throttle for 10 seconds. The plan says rest for 2 minutes, by walking around or standing, before repeating four more times. During my break, I threw in a few ab exercises. Conclusion: approachable and fun, as you shouldn’t get bored in 30 seconds. My husband, a personal trainer, gave 10-20-30 a thumbs up however both of us agree, getting your doctor’s approval should be step 1. After that, try it – it may be your ‘favorite’ too! MV

Beauty and Braun
T
he definition of beauty in our society has been a tempest argument as people wage opinions of whether the waif or the curve dominates. Yet, Keema Lenderman (PNBA Masters Bikini Diva Pro) and Eve Dawes (WBFF PRO), defy these clashing opinions with achievement of muscular beauty. They prove physical health and loveliness can go hand in hand. Building the Braun As a full time teacher and mother of five who was encroaching on the “Big 4-0,” Keema embarked on her fitness journey. “I wanted to do something big. I thought it would be good to get into shape and reach a goal,” she said. In a four-month span, Keema went from twenty-four to nine percent body fat. She leaned her figure with a five to six day-a-week training schedule, using exercises like 260-pound glute thrusts. Of course, gym time was not the only factor in obtaining her fit physique. “Seventy to eighty percent of fitness comes from what you eat. They say abs are made in the kitchen, and it’s true.” Her normal meals consist of a lean protein, complex carb, and vegetable. She avoids sugary drinks and sweets but has an occasional cheat food like sushi, red wine, chips and salsa—and Krispy Kreme donuts.
By Erika Kimble Dermatology NP
For Eve Dawes, it’s more the adventure of trying new restaurants and a glass of wine that tops her cheat list. Yet, traditionally she follows a diet similar to Keema’s, along with supplements like MRM, DRM, B Vitamins and protein shakes. She trains six days a week during competition season, doing cardio and exercises like lunges, squats, and kickbacks. However, as a classically trained dancer, fitness coach, and model, Eve had the perfect foundation to launch her competitive career. “I wanted to take it to the next level; I had gone as far as I could in fitness and in modeling and wanted to break into the industry,” she said. Brandishing the Beauty Beauty is not a one-size-fits-all mold. To those critics who feel female fitness contestants aren’t feminine, Eve disagrees. “I think that’s one of the biggest things I’m trying to promote, that yes, it’s still very feminine…bikini girls are about the curves, about creating curves and symmetry.” To highlight her figure, Eve utilizes skin exfoliation, cocoa butter, and cosmetics like Super Goop, YSL, and NYX. Keema’s must-have beauty trick is called Beauty Bum. “I use it on the back of my legs, but some people use it on arms and stomach. It heats up skin and activates fat cells so they become mobilized; then when you work out your body gets rid of it.” She also uses a weekly charcoal scrub to exfoliate and clarify skin, followed by a slathering of Nivea body oil.

Heart and Soul of a Pro Although much of the preparation is physical, both women emphasize the importance of the mentality in being stage ready. “Be your own best self. Beauty is something that comes from within,” said Eve. Keema stresses how attitude plays into a win. “If you really want to do it…you’ll do it. You’ll either make excuses or you’ll make results.” She also presses that “personality will trump beauty every day.” MV Erika Kimble, BSN, MA, MS, APRN is a Dermatology Nurse Practitioner at Linda Woodson Dermatology in Las Vegas. Kidneys and Protein, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly
P
eople seem to have a love affair with protein. They believe that it’s critical to have a high protein intake to have good health. The go-to foods that people consider healthy are often foods high in protein. Sadly, the scientific evidence for high protein foods is the other way around. Mostly they are dangerous to our health, both in their short-term and longterm effects. When it comes to bone health and kidney stones, eating lots of protein is the primary reason that bone loss and stone formation in our kidneys are rampant in our nation. When we consume diets high in protein, our kidneys have to buffer out renal acids caused by the unnecessary protein. That’s right, you read it correctly; anyone can easily eat too much protein and put a strain on their system. To buffer the renal acids, your kidneys steal calcium from your bones and food. This creates loss of bone strength and increased risk of kidney stones, a big problem in Nevada in the summer. Most people think, “I will just take a calcium supplement.” However, this can worsen the risk for kidney stones. All that excess calcium makes it easier to grow a kidney stone, and still leaves you at risk for osteoporosis. According to the British Medical Journal, “researchers, led by Dr Shalini Reddy from the University of Chicago, found that six weeks on a low carbohydrate, high protein diet increased the acid load to the kidneys, raising the risk of kidney stones. Animal protein has been shown to boost urinary excretion of oxalate, a compound that combines with calcium and other compounds to form kidney stones.”
High protein diets clearly increase the risk of progression to kidney disease. At the moment, the Vegas Valley has over thirty dialysis centers. So we have a huge number of people going on dialysis regularly. Many different studies published over the last twenty years have established clearly that diets low in protein prevent people with early kidney disease from progressing to renal dialysis and death. In studies on diabetic patients, these risks were dropped nearly in half by adopting a low protein diet. All foods with the exception of simple sugars and oils have protein in them. This means even foods that you think of as primarily carbohydrate foods like potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, rice and squash have protein in them that your body can utilize. This kind of protein is both good and necessary. So ditch the ice cream, beef, chicken, turkey, cheese, shrimp and milk and replace it with pasta, vegetables, oatmeal, rice, potatoes and sweet potatoes. It might prevent a painful emergency room visit from a broken bone or kidney stone and it will protect your kidneys from failing. MV

5 Tips to Jumpstart Your Training This Fall!
By Tamra Trainer
A FREE 3 Months Membership FREE 100 Minutes Tanning FREE Access to Cross Training Room
s fall approaches and it starts to get cold, we start spending more time inside than out, losing our motivation to get to the gym and keep that summer body we worked so hard for. After all, who is going to notice what we look like underneath all those layers of clothing? DO IT FOR YOU! Here are my top “tips” for training that will keep you on track with your fitness goals while getting through fall.
1.

Instead of doing long, boring cardio sessions, try 25-35 minutes of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). HIIT has been proven to be much more effective in burning calories, maintaining muscle mass, and improving cardiovascular health than long, steady-state cardio. Walk on a treadmill for 3-5 minutes until warmed up. Then go to a 5.5% incline, picking the pace up to a 6.0 or 7.5 for more experienced runners. Run for 1 minute. Then drop the pace to 3.8 for 3 minutes to bring your heart rate back down. Repeat 4-5 times, and there you go! Workout complete! If running is too stressful on your knees or hips, go on a higher incline like 15%, or use the rowing machine or elliptical trainer.
2.
Get rid of those 5lb weights. If you don’t lift heavy, you won’t tighten and tone or increase muscle mass. Women, don’t be afraid to lift heavy: you will NEVER look too “masculine” or bulky. If you feel you are getting too bulky, check your diet - it’s NOT the weights!
3.
I highly recommend hiring a personal trainer to take you through a full-body workout and showing you the ropes until you feel confident going out on your own. Many injuries happen when we don’t do an exercise correctly. Learn proper form with little or no weights first. It might cost you a little more in the beginning, but it will save you thousands in medical bills in the end!
4.
How can you tell if you are starting at the right amount of weight? You should be able to do 10 reps out of 13-15; those last 3-5 should be relatively hard with the last one being almost a failure. Keep that same amount of weight until you finish that final rep before increasing it a little more.
5.
The more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn. If you have a choice between cardio or weights, always pick the weights. I know we’ve had the mindset that the only way to burn calories is to get on a treadmill, but erase that completely and go to the weight room instead. You can sculpt an entirely new body by lifting weights. You don’t have to stay stuck in the old one. MV In Good Health! ~Tamra

Thank You Red Rock Fertility. Thank you Dr. Littman and the staff at Red Rock Fertility for my two beautiful babies, Mac and Lily. For two years, my husband and I tried to have children naturally and we were frustrated when we couldn’t conceive. After visiting several fertility centers, meeting Dr. Littman at a Red Rock monthly seminar was refreshing. I was immediately impressed with her confidence and warm, personal approach. Thanks to her, we only had to go through a single IVF cycle. My son Mac was born on our first fresh cycle, and Lily was born two years later in an FET cycle. Over the past four years, the staff has made us feel like family. We even recommended their services to our friends who now have babies of their own. Thank you Red Rock Fertility!

NV Float Therapy: A New Way of Healing
N
V Float Therapy is taking two of the most efficient processes of healing and is combining them into one spa for the ultimate solution for therapy and relaxation. The medical spa is the first of its kind in Nevada focused solely on float room and salt room therapies. This new facility, built in 2015, was crafted to restore the rare mind-and-body balance that often eludes us in our daily lives. “Our objective is to offer proven therapies in an elegant atmosphere, unmatched in any other spa. Our goal is to see every client leave us with a feeling of well-being, tranquility, and relaxation,” said Kevin Schern. Floatation therapy is a medical treatment using sensory deprivation within a floatation tank or float room. Tests show that floatation therapy not only has an immediate effect on pain relief and elimination of stress, but it also promotes ‘wholebrain’ thinking. The Float Room offers clients a choice between near-total sensory deprivation and an experience enhanced with unique LED lighting and music or natural sounds. Both cases result in what an astronaut may feel like making that first, weightless spacewalk. There aremany benefits from floatation therapy utilizing floatation tanks, and there is no common client. There is a potential gain for everyone. Specific flotation applications for athletes include deep muscular relaxation, accelerated healing of injuries, and enhanced performance by using visualization. Benefits for business people include complete physical and mental de-stressing, enhancing creativity, reduced blood pressure and heart rate, and rejuvenating energy levels. “The use of flotation therapy has a number of medical benefits,” Schern said.“In the gravityfree floating environment, the body balances and heals internally as all the senses are rested.” Recent medical flotation research has shown more and more the importance of having a good balance of activity between the two cerebral hemispheres to guarantee a better state of physical, mental, and emotional health. This research explains a sense of balance and well-being.

The other remedy room is the Salt Room. Salt rooms have been used for many yearsto ease symptoms of respiratory illnesses such as asthma, allergies, skin problems and inflammation. Hundreds of years ago, natural salt caverns were discovered by European monks to treat people with respiratory ailments and provide their patients with faster recovery time. The patients would inhale the salt dust that was produced from the monks grinding salt rocks against each other. During your 45-minute session, you may find your throat and nasal passages becoming clearer, as the salt-laden air enters your respiratory system and naturally extracts positively charged impurities. This air also helps counter the internal inflammation that is the root cause of so many

health issues, especially the most frustrating bronchial conditions. The NV Float space has been expertly crafted with over 10,000 pounds of pure Himalayan salt, which contains 84 other invigorating minerals. The walls and floor are thickly coated with this miraculous mineral. You just have to sit back and relax as this breathtaking atmosphere does the work for you. Other amenities all clients have access to are personal showers equipped with body wash, shampoo, conditioner and lotions. All facilities are kept meticulously clean, and the water is kept clear with a state-of-the-art UV filtration system. To make a reservation, please see the website, nvfloat.com or call 702.776.7766. The 3 Biggest Mistakes Small Businesses Make on Facebook
Y
ou know that as a small business you need to be on Facebook. However, that is not the end of the story. There is actually such a thing as Facebook etiquette, and if you are not following it, you may be doing more harm to your business than good. These are the top three mistakes small businesses make on Facebook. Are you guilty?
1
They Talk About Themselves. Believe it or not, your Facebook posts should not be all about you. Sure, you are ultimately on Facebook to grow sales, but that should not be obvious from your postings. The true purpose of Facebook is to build trust with your followers. You need to engage them and keep them interested. If they wanted to be sold on your product or service, they would visit your website. On Facebook, you should be posting funny anecdotes, humorous pictures, and helpful articles, all with your target demographic in mind. Once a week you can post something to promote yourself, but no more than this, unless you want to drop followers like flies.
48
2
They Post Too Often. Unlike Twitter, your Facebook posts have a relatively long shelf life: they will usually be seen by people for up to 24 hours. Of course, it does depend on how many other businesses and friends they regularly follow. If you are posting more than twice a day, you may be alienating your followers. They don’t want their news feed to be overflowing with information from you - no matter how valuable it is.
3
They Don’t Interact. Facebook is not a once-per-day thing. Yes, that is how much you should be posting new content; however, you also need to be interacting with any comments or questions that post should bring in. You need to show your followers that there is a real person behind the page. Always “like” every comment you get, just to acknowledge that you saw it. Additionally, if you have anything genuine to say in response, say it. But always keep your professionalism in mind, since your Facebook page is a huge part of your branding. MV

AAPrinting John Pinnington decided to create his own business opportunity after he couldn’t obtain same day printing service. As a result, John opened AAPrinting on April 1, 2010, against the advice of many people who said it would not be a good idea during an economic recession. With only $4500, and no printing experience, John has expanded AA Printing from one employee (himself ) to six full time employees. After hitting the five-year mark, AA Printing has hit a new benchmark in 2015. It has signed a large contract to be the main printing company for a new energy drink that will be sold nationwide launching the end of August.

Red Rock Fertility opened in 2008 and was a single locations with a staff of 5. They have now expanded to three locations, to include a Surgery Center, an expanded main office and a satellite office serving Henderson. Even with these expansions, their offices havebegun to burst at the seams with now over 30 employees. With this in mind, Red Rock Fertility has begun its most ambitious expansion to date. Dr. Littman purchased a new building at Russel and the 215 which will become the new home of Red Rock Fertility and its associated Sunset Surgery Center. The expansion will not only bring everything under one roof, it will double the available square feet, providing a better experience for both patients and employees.

Silver Springs Water signs up hundreds of customers from our competitors each year who have taken upon themselves to switch to a better product, our 8.5 ph Real Water. hat do armed forces, athletics, and real estate all have in common? For Tommy Leigh, who has all three of these professions under his belt, it comes down to teamwork: something he became familiar with early on in his life. Enlisting in the military at just 17 years old, Tommy never would’ve guessed that by age 30 he would become a broker and owner of a top real estate company in Las Vegas. Since then, he has managed to bring his prior knowledge of teamwork into his current real estate business, Vegas One Realty, making it the booming success that it is.
With this mindset and a desire to venture into business, Tommy made his way into real estate in 2006—a major risk, as this was during the housing market crash. However, this former airman really stuck to his guns, so to speak. “I looked at it as a survival of the fittest; I wanted it more than the others that quit or failed.” He wanted it so badly, in fact, that in 2013 he bought out Vegas One Realty, officially taking over as the new owner and broker. Tommy’s excitement as head of the company quickly turned into overhaul. Working anywhere between 14 to 17 hours a day, seven days a week, Tommy completely transformed the infrastructure of the business. He implemented many changes including: a full-time manager, marketing systems, company branding, proper training, and an expansion of the office. In renovating the company from the ground up, Tommy and his team created a household name in Las Vegas that would last.
56
Tommy began his career as a member of the United States Air Force after his parents instilled in him the belief that “nothing in life comes without sacrifice and getting your hands dirty.” After honorably serving in the military, Tommy decided to move into semiprofessional athletics and arena football. He became well aware that teamwork was not only important, but also necessary in his career. “Being part of a team has helped me tremendously in life, sports, and business. None of it would have been possible without leadership and teammates,” Tommy said.
Never one to sell himself short, Tommy is not just a real estate broker, but also an established mortgage broker with a specialty in VA loans. He works closely with armed forces, even in his postmilitary career, by striving to give back to the community in many admirable ways. Sponsoring military athletic teams at Nellis Air Force Base, for instance, Tommy provides an outlet for members to enjoy themselves in some friendly competition and camaraderie. His military and athletic background has certainly molded him into the businessman he is today. What Tommy finds most rewarding in his career
is not measured in his own success; rather, it is special moments in which he’s helped families find their homes. He still vividly recalls handing the keys to a client who never imagined owning a home and whose children had never had rooms of their own before. Tommy also remembers assisting a dying veteran—someone whose final wish in life was to know that his wife and son would be left with a roof over their heads. It is the heartfelt instances like these that prove Vegas One Realty is a top-notch company that genuinely cares. The company’s motto, “We look at business differently,” couldn’t be truer for Tommy and that ever-important team of his. MV

MY REAL ESTATE
Summerlin, Your Future…
A
s a trusted real estate agent and luxury realtor in Las Vegas, I often get questioned regarding Las Vegas areas with “Where should I purchase a new home?” This article is dedicated to fabulous Summerlin and to also clarify why this area was named by Money Magazine in 2014, as one of the “Best Places to Live in America” and become the most affluent community in Nevada. History: Summerlin, the incredible 22,500-acre masterplanned community was developed by Howard Hughes Corporation located in the Las Vegas Valley near the Spring Mountains and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. The community was named after Howard’s grandmother Jean Amelia Summerlin. The community consists of over more than 150 parks with 150 completed miles of the Summerlin trail system, lifestyle amenities including tennis courts, nine golf courses, TPC at Summerlin, 26 public and private schools, along with dozens of art galleries and museums.
58
Entertainment: Tivoli Village feels almost as if you are wandering somewhere in Europe with its upscale shopping and restaurants plaza located across from the luxury condominiums, One Queensridge Place. At Leone Café, coffee lovers can enjoy an amazing cup of coffee made with signature Italian ingredients. Choose from a variety of cultural restaurants to wine and dine. The Market LV, located in the heart of Tivoli Village near Brio Tuscan Grille has great wine tastings and networking events. To pick up organic and locally grown products, the farmers market is scheduled every Saturday. Walk your feet off, considering there is complimentary valet for guests. Development: Downtown Summerlin is an outdoor shopping center that officially opened on October 9th 2014. It’s an urban walk-able experience of1,600,000 square feet of retail and 200,000 square feet of business spaces, brought fashion, dining, entertainment amenities and office suites. It includes 125 stores such as, Macy’s, Dillard’s, Apple store, Michael Kors, Banana Republic, just to name a few.
Olga Kotelnikova Luxury Condos Specialist Tel: (702) 349-3497 Olga@LuxuryHomesNV.com www.LuxuryHomesNV.com
Real Estate: The average price per square-foot for homes in Summerlin is $133.00. Over the last five years, sales prices have appreciated by 63% and increased by 17.6% compared to the prior year. The average home listing price $315,221. Perhaps, you will find yourself living the dream you always imagined in one of the luxury mansions at Red Rock Country Club, Queensridge or The Ridges, located in Summerlin and considered to be one the most prestigious neighborhoods in Las Vegas Valley. The prices of those luxury homes range from $600,000 to $10,000,000. Climate: Summerlin’s higher elevation delivers cooler temperatures year around, allowing you to enjoy beautiful weather nine months of the year. If you are looking at purchasing a home in Las Vegas, be sure to check out Summerlin and all it has to offer within the great community in which we live. You will be pleasantly surprised. MV
MY REAL ESTATE
Luxury Living at a Fractional Cost
W
ant to know a secret? Lots of rich, famous, and wealthy people own luxury vacation homes, private jets, and yachts - with others! Fractionally! Why? Even though they can easily afford to own by themselves, it makes sense to only pay for what they use. That’s why they’re rich! And now, you can own your share of a luxury Las Vegas vacation home, too. Hi, I’m Bob Sluys of Las Vegas Luxury Investments, and together with our team of professionals, I can share with you how to own your slice of the pie and even share your dream of luxury vacation home ownership with your family and friends. Wait a minute Bob - when I come to Vegas, I want to stay in a suite on the Strip and soak up all of the glitz and glamour of Sin City! And to that I say: “Of course you do; after all, it’s Vegas!” But . . . what if you stayed in a luxury multi-million dollar estate situated on a golf course, enjoying stunning Las Vegas Strip views while relaxing in a gorgeous spa - that you OWN! And the best
60
part is that you didn’t pay a couple million dollars for it! You didn’t even pay a million! In fact, you received all of these benefits, and more, for pennies on the dollar. With Las Vegas Luxury Investments, you can now own a long-term, appreciating asset that is fully transferable without the full cost of ownership, maintenance headaches, or worries of renting your unused time to offset the expense. You may even be entitled to tax benefits and access to your 401K funds to help with your purchase. And as for the glitz and glamour of the Strip, no worries - you won’t miss a thing. A part of your ownership benefits includes an Escalade in the garage - just hop in and off you go! This concept has been popular in Europe for years, with people vacationing 4-6 weeks annually. In fact, my aunt and uncle (who live in Holland) own a villa in Spain - and he’s a butcher and she’s a housewife! (What is it that Robin Leach says? Champagne lifestyle on a Chardonnay budget?)
By: Bob Sluys
So here’s how it works: Las Vegas Luxury Investments identifies the perfect properties based on the features and amenities that are important to Las Vegas visitors. ATTENTION! Each luxury vacation home MUST have the wow factor! Location, amenities, luxury . . . if it’s not “sexy,” why would you want to stay there and own it? Once we have a small group that is interested in buying, we will secure the home, deck it out in style, and offer fractional portions for purchase. You may buy as much or as little as you desire, based on the usage plan established. Everything from the planning and preparation to the cleaning and maintenance will be handled by our team of seasoned professionals. Imagine you will actually be able to spend your vacation vacationing! For more information, visit lasvegasluxuryinvestments.com or call us directly at 702.575.2821.

Kids go back to school, but retirees have an indefinite amount of time to contend with. “Worse still for retirees, many don’t know if they can afford the time they have left, which may not be yielding a satisfying lifestyle. After all the technical details I review with clients and their finances, such as protecting and growing their money, I sometimes offer a bit of unexpected advice: consider your employment options.”

Fall Feels Fabulous By Megan Mathis Nvseniorguide.com (702) 269-9290 mmathis4@cox.net
M
any will say that Fall is their favorite season and I have to agree. It just feels so good to be outside with nature and connect to Mother Earth. It’s interesting that most people tend to feel good during the fall season and, while spending more time outdoors may be the reason; did you know that the most important thing in life is that you feel good? It’s true. When you feel good, you draw everything good into your life. Like attracts like. When you feel good, you are turned in the direction where your dreams and desires can show up for you. I was tested on this theory and it works! During a bad spell of events, I could not think of much to make myself feel good. It was as though every time I turned around, something else went wrong – but that was just it! I was ‘turned around’ to face despair rather than joy… So, I purposely started thinking about something positive - my pets. They are so loving, and I get so much pleasure being with them. I called a friend and related a funny story about one of my dogs and I laughed out loud. In that moment I could feel myself turn in the direction of hope. I felt lighter and less resistant. I began to feel like everything was going to be just fine. So, the next time you are feeling bad about something, reach for the best feeling-thought that you can come up with and life will start to turn in your favor. I welcome the fabulous feeling of fall, and I wish all of you the best feeling-thoughts for the season! MV

MY CAREER
How to Get a Job That You Are “Overqualified” For
Y
ou have been in your position for 10 years, and suddenly you lose your job. Why me? Was it something I did? More often than not, it is not you. These things happen more often than you think. Businesses struggle to stay afloat because high labor costs affect their ability to remain competitive. Normally, the higher the seniority, the higher the salary. The solution is often to eliminate the high-paying positions and open up more low-paying, entry-level positions. The effect of this is a glut of entry-level jobs on the market. As Student Affairs Program Manager at The International School of Hospitality, I help a lot of career changers who find themselves in similar circumstances. Recently, I met with a student that had owned a popular wedding venue for years but who was forced to close because of
sky-high overhead costs. Finding employment opportunities was hard, so she decided to go back to school to brush up her skills. Now having graduated, she found that she was getting interviews, but many employers advised her that she was overqualified for their positions. Her question to me was, “How do I get a job without the employer thinking I’m too good for the position?” And that’s probably the same question you have. Along with many other job seekers in the same situation, you apply for positions that you’re “overqualified” for because of your years of experience, education, and so forth. After the endless wait for callbacks, the lack of interviews, and a few short “thanks-but-no-thanks, you’re overqualified” e-mails, it seems like you’re out of options. So, what can you do?
By Anthony Lai
The first thing to do is stay positive. Second, when submitting those applications for entry-level positions, follow these strategies to maximize your chances of getting the interview and proving you’re the right fit for the job. Simplify your resume. Don’t over-emphasize your past work experience. Keep it short and simple. List your daily job duties without writing down your numerous accomplishments and accolades. Make sure the skills you list are relevant to the job you are applying for. Avoid the appearance of desperation. Regardless of the reason that you are applying, don’t let the employer know that you are applying just because you need work. Employers are after applicants who want the specific jobs they’re offering and will work to their organizations. Use your resume and your interview to show them what you can bring to the table. Show interest and passion. Let’s face it; an entrylevel position after years at the higher ends of the pay scale isn’t exactly your dream job. However, don’t let anyone know that you’re better than the job you’re applying for. Check your attitude, and show a willingness to work hard to help the company achieve its goals. Demonstrate loyalty. When you have a lot of experience and apply for an entry-level position, companies think you’re going to jump ship as soon as a better opportunity comes along. Prove that you are there to stay, and use your experience, expertise, and all of your hard-won skills to get promoted from within.

Be flexible when talking salary. Accept the fact that you are not getting paid as much as before, but be grateful for the opportunity to work and the potential to be a contributing team member at a new organization. Most importantly, remember that it is all about the employer, not you. Show them, don’t tell them, how you can make a difference. Prove that you are a good fit with the company and the team. If you do, you’ll already be miles ahead of the competition. MV

MY FAMILY
The “Best Interest of the Child” Standard
W
hen parents are going through a divorce (or a child custody battle) and children are involved, it is considered to be one of their worst points in life. It is overbearing, emotionally draining, costly, excruciatingly painful, and an overall nightmare. A divorce can seem as your whole life is ruined and crashing down on top of you, but the reality is, this process is not just about you. There is an innocent child who was brought into this world based on the relationship of the parents. No matter how painful this process is for you, it is just as difficult for your child, and it also bares a psychological impact on a child going through a custody battle, which can be debilitating and, overall, self-destructive. In cases involving child custody, often parents believe they are fighting for what is best for the child, but they are blinded by their own personal, vindictive agenda, causing more harm to the child than they ever intended. It is important to remember when going into a divorce case with a child or into a child custody battle, there is never really a true winner. It is important to remember what long-term goals you have as a parent for your child and what effect this battle will ultimately have on your child. In Nevada, the state favors equal sharing of parental rights and responsibilities, under NRS 125.490(1), which establishes that joint custody is presumed to be in the child’s best interest. This sets forth Nevada’s underlining policy “to ensure that minor children have frequent association and a continuing relation with both parents… and to encourage such parents to share the rights and responsibility of child rearing” (NRS 125.460). This policy is based on theory that the best situation is having a parent or parents, who will allow continuous relationship between
66
both parents. It is not the battle of “Well...he/she is not going to do it, so why should I?” It’s your obligation to step up as a parent, understanding that the other side may or may not engage, but you took the necessary steps to preserve the children’s relationship with the other parent. Your objective should be to create the least amount of disturbance in the child’s life and create stability regardless of the actions of the other side. No matter how much you are hurting and what happened between you and the opposing party, you have a duty to support your child through this process, which will ultimately shape his or her future. The point of a custody arrangement should not be to punish the other parent, but to create a functional environment that allows the child to prosper and the parents to move forward with their lives. When going to court for custody of your child, the thought of settlement is not typically a party’s first thought; however, a settlement is typically in the child’s best interest. If parents are able to discuss and resolve issues, although not what was originally planned, parents are less likely to be in and out of court dragging their children through the mud. Remember the way you act through this process and what you say to your children or in front of your children sets precedent for their thoughts on themselves, their future relationships, and their children. It is also advised that parents seek counseling for their children throughout this process, allowing them an outlet to express themselves. MV Samira C. Knight, Esq. MY FAMILY
Dishing out the Duty
By Katie Bencze
A
friend and I recently found ourselves talking about children, chores, and allowance. How old? How much? How often? I have to admit that my perspective on this has evolved over the years. Before kids, if asked, I would say that I’d use the model that I was raised with. I had a set of chores and depending on what and how well I completed them, I received an allowance. Then I met my husband. He is from Europe and came from very humble beginnings. After visiting his country and seeing what is expected from everyone in the family (young and old), my views are quite different. First, I realized that my kids are capable of much more than I thought (at a much younger age). Second, I saw that involving children in daily tasks not only taught them responsibility, but it also gave them a personal stake in the home and family. So I’ve changed my tactics. I don’t believe in allowance. Why should I pay my child to do something that I expect them to do? It is not a job; it is what we do to support each other as a family. We all pitch in. Now don’t get me wrong, they can still earn money. We just keep it separate. There are household tasks that are expected and there are tasks that go beyond those. For example, when it comes to my 7-year-old, I expect her to make her bed daily, clean her room (once a week), help empty/fill the dishwasher, put away her laundry (usually weekly), and help “swifter” the floor (every few days). Now that she is older, she has taken on folding her own laundry as well. Does she need reminding? Yes. Does she do it well? With a little practice, yes! Does she whine about it? Of course! But she does it, and she feels proud when it’s done (and I do too)! In the end, I don’t think it matters which tasks are expected and which aren’t; I think it’s just the expectation that they are a contributing part of the family - they are important. As I’ve made these tasks more of a routine, it’s amazing how much less resistance I get. It’s also amazing how little time they take when part of a normal routine, leaving plenty of time for my kids to just be kids. MV

This Isn’t Your Grandmother’s Antique Store
T
hey say you never know the value of something until it’s gone, but this is hardly the case at Not Just Antiques Mart. Here, customers can discover how much their items are worth with help of estate liquidator Renee Poole and her daughter, Jessica Poole. Together, this mother-daughter team owns the most unique antique shop in the city. It’s a 10-year business that contains quite a rich history: hundreds of years’ worth of objects within its walls. Back in 2005, Renee opened the store intending to have somewhere to bring the smaller estate sales. With Jessica joining this endeavor alongside her mother, the bar was set high for antique shops. At 1422 Western Ave., this hidden gem in the heart of downtown Las Vegas has become an award-winning business that visitors flock to for all sorts of inquiries. The store truly does it all: whether it’s consignment, thrift, auctions, or estate sales, the list goes on and on. The astounding 12,000-square-foot warehouse is home to a countless number of precious collectibles, artwork, pieces of furniture, etc.— you name it, they have it. In fact, they estimate that they have a whopping one million items or more! “Each item has its own story,” Renee said. To sort out what would seem like an endless outpouring of objects, Renee and Jessica have set up different themed rooms where certain items are designated, thus making the shopping experience chaos-free. While some sections of the store are sorted by color, other rooms have more distinct themes such as the “book room,”
68

the “record room,” or even the “Christmas room.” As if a whole floor of these rooms wasn’t enough, there is an entire second level just as full of merchandise for the more thrifty shoppers. Offering anything from collector’s items to children’s toys, fine jewelry to sports memorabilia, the store appeals to any and every shopper. As Jessica said, “We really are for everyone.” Even high-end brand names like Waterford and Baccarat can be found here, but this is unlike anything you might come across in a department store. A major difference: you’ll get the same valuable pieces here for only a fraction of the cost. With a range of vintage to modern items, from currency of colonial times to present-day designer labels, you can spend hours browsing through the store—yet travel decades back into history. Renee and Jessica both agreed that what makes their business most rewarding is the reaction they get when customers, not expecting much return value on an item, actually end up getting hundreds or even thousands more than they thought they would. Renee admits that after doing 25 years of estate liquidation, it is rare to see something she’s never seen before. However, she explained that when she does get shown a very unusual item, “Those are exciting moments for me.” Parting from a significant possession isn’t always easy, but Renee and Jessica assure customers that their treasures will be treated with tender loving care. This is yet another quality that sets their
consignment store apart from the rest; customers can trust whole-heartedly that their cherished possessions will end up in good homes. “We recycle love,” Jessica said. Not surprisingly, the duo’s successful business is featured as a finalist for the 2015 Family Owned Business Award in Nevada Business Magazine. Additionally, the shop has been deemed the 2015 “Best of Las Vegas” winner for the vintage store category. The store’s name says it all: Not Just Antiques Mart is so much more than a typical antique outlet. As it says on their website, they really are “not just your gramma’s antique store.” For more information, visit notjustantiquesmart. com. Not Just Antiques Mart is open Monday through Saturday, 10:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. MV

Baby Bump Beauty

n an industry that thrives on appearance and certain standards of physique, modeling is a tough business. Factor in a pregnancy, and a modeling career seems nearly impossible. For Colie Knoke, however, being pregnant didn’t stop her from continuing her profession as a model and actress; it only made her more determined to build herself up when others tore her down. Now with her newborn baby girl, Colie has reestablished herself in her career field, while bringing a whole new meaning to the beauty of motherhood. A North Dakota native, Colie was once a smalltown girl with big dreams of being on stage, in magazines, or appearing on TV—things that weren’t typical for most kids in the area. “Being from North Dakota, I wasn’t really given those options,” Colie said. Performing lead roles in school plays was the closest she’d get to these goals in her hometown. In 2010, with a graphic design degree in tow, Colie arrived in Las Vegas to start what she thought would be a mere desk job. Unbeknownst to Colie, her underlying passion for being in the spotlight would pave the way for bigger opportunities. Eventually, Colie aligned herself with Las Vegas agencies and got her start in the modeling industry with various bookings. What began as promotional events for liquor companies soon became her threshold into ad campaigns and more. By 2011, she found herself on billboards, which expanded her presence beyond just Nevada. Colie’s portfolio was filling up fast. Besides the cover of Las Vegas Magazine, Colie could be seen in catalogs for bikini companies like Liquid & Lace and Bellyyellers or hair modeling for The Style Lounge at The Linq. She’s also had her fair share of celebrity co-workers: from presenting awards with Jay Leno to modeling for Cedric the Entertainer’s hat line, WHO CED. Colie seemed unstoppable—that is, until announcing her pregnancy. With agencies so quick to turn down a pregnant model, Colie was suddenly made aware of the belittling and the discriminatory aspects that pregnant women (particularly models) endure. Just one day after her public pregnancy announcement via an online video, Colie was
immediately faced with an ugly side of modeling: rejection. “Whether a woman is 3 weeks along or 30 weeks along, she should never be afraid to lose her job over it,” Colie said. While Colie admits this issue was (and still appears to be) unresolved in her profession, she was not going to let this hinder her success. Putting her best foot forward, Colie found different acting and modeling gigs that would allow her to embrace her pregnant belly, not hide it. As Colie put it, a pregnant woman “would be the ultimate trademark for any company trying to portray a good, clean image.” She wanted to show that pregnancy could still be picture perfect. Her first venture as a pregnant actress was working with comedian Mike Hammer, in which they appeared together in a televised Penn &
Teller show. Next, Colie worked with the L.A.based agency called Expecting Models. As the company’s name suggests, this was created specifically for pregnant models. Whether appearing in a music video directed by Mark Pellington or in the upcoming 2016 movie, Arms and the Dudes (starring Jonah Hill and Miles Teller), Colie certainly found ways to keep up her impressive résumé throughout her maternity. With a new mother’s glow, Colie’s next step is to write a book about her hardships she faced when pregnant; she hopes to show women that they even if they are independent mothers, they are not alone. In addition to her side hobbies of painting and drawing, Colie plans to continue modeling, acting, and being a spokesperson for reputable companies. It seems no bump in the road could slow down Colie—not even her baby bump. MV

all in Vegas is a marvelous time of the year – triple-digit temperatures are moving toward lower average temperatures in the lower 80s in October. Cooler weather entices people to go outside and be active. One activity to include in your fall lineup of outdoor activities is walking your dog. The first week of October has been designated National Walk Your Dog Week (October 1-7). The week was founded by pet lifestyle expert Colleen Paige to increase awareness about the dangers of pet obesity and to encourage people to start walking with their dogs.

ringing a new baby home is a huge life change and can really turn things upside down until you get the hang of it. The same is true for your fur babies who may have a hard time adjusting to no longer being the baby of the house. When we brought home our new son, there was definitely a transition period for the dogs, and I noticed right away they were feeling left out. I immediately started to feel guilty and realized somehow we needed to find a way to include them into the new routine. First, we were not afraid to let them really get to know the baby. As long as your dogs do not display signs of aggression and are always supervised, it is encouraged to allow them to get familiar with baby. Let them sniff and lick, but set boundaries so they know their limits. Same goes for all the new things in the house. We let our dogs explore every new baby item that comes in. Also, while it may be difficult, try to set time aside just for them so they still feel special. Whether it’s a short walk, a game of fetch (Charlotte’s favorite), or even just some exclusive cuddle time, I make time for that when it’s my turn to sleep and hubby takes the baby. However you can make it work, just try to remember the dogs are part of the family too, and this is a big change for them as well! MV

Nothing Naked About It: Naked City Pizza texture and served with Naked City’s homemade ranch and blue cheese dips. How does modern and sophistication fit in to this equation? Look for the daily specials that are changed out every few weeks.
N
aked City Pizza on Paradise is a place we drove passed many times on our way homewithout stopping in to enjoy. All that has now changed! Naked City Pizza is named after one of the original neighborhoods in Las Vegas. One of us being a Las Vegas native knew the neighborhood well as her mother was raised in this area of town. This restaurant on Paradise is not your average red sauce pizza joint, but rather a classic-Italiancomfort-food-meets-sophistication-and-moderndining joint. All this in an intimate and fun setting. The family recipes and the photos serve as a tribute to their parents and grandparents, as the owners have dedicated a wall of vintage black and white family photos. The sailor and nurse photo is a must see and the story a must tell – just ask one of the owners. We shared The Guinea Pie (Guinea being the nickname of the chef owner), the signature pizza of Naked City and wow, what flavorful indulgence this was. Imagine this: a square pizza with a white garlic sauce base topped with fresh spinach and the chef’s grandmother’s all-beef sliced meatballs with a hint of mint, topped with mozzarella, ricotta and dusted with dried oregano. Hungry yet? Great news – all pizzas are available in 1/4 sheet, 1/2 sheet or full sheet. You will fall in love with the menu items from starters like the Garlic Buns to salads, hot and cold subs, desserts and of course, as the name suggests; pizzas for days. In the mood for Poutine Fries perhaps? Well they have that too! We had to try the Buffalo wings, first cookedin the oven, then fried giving them an extra crispy
74
We enjoyed the Tomato Confit salad which has Heirloom baby tomatoes and were marinated in extra virgin oliveoil, garlic and basil. They are then cooked until they are just blistered and were both sweet and savory. The oil was used to dress the arugula with a bit of fried baby basil that added texture and flavor. We also had the New Zealand Lamb with Lonzo, mint oil, whole grain mustard over smashed potatoes. The presentation was simple elegance, enhanced with edible flowers… And yes, we ate them. It would be remiss of us if we did not mention the quality of the ingredients that are exceptional and the value unbelievable. The lamb chops were only $11.95! We ended with Sweet Cream Ricotta Cannolis with house made chocolate cherry ice cream. The 50 craft beer offerings, including local Nevada ones, are so extensive they are prominently displayed on a chalkboard at the entrance. This beer menu features the name, type, price, alcohol percentage and amount in ounces. The Sharkinator, a white IPA, is a must try for a Parrothead. However, the red wine was too good to pass up this time. This street front restaurant is a Buffalo Bills’ sports hangout with a UNLV “Rebel Yell” including furniture made by the owners. The city watcher in you will enjoy the barstool dining that faces the street; the conversationalist in you will enjoy the conference style wood tables and upholstered bench seating. Fall will bring football Sundays, movie nights and beer tasting dinners. Be on the lookout! “Nothing naked about the cuisine; it comes fully dressed with surprising & delighting twists” and That’s What She Said! MV

In fact, the food and service is so good, it was named one of the “Top 10 Most Influential Food Trucks” of 2015. “Fuku” Burgers AKA “Lucky” Burgers are the main attraction here, but that is not to be outdone by the many other delicious options: the Tamago/Egg Burger, Kinoko/ Mushroom Burger, Karai/Spicy Burger, or even the NagaDog. Public School 702 School is in session! New in Downtown Summerlin, this “gastropub” plays on a schoolhouse vibe while serving artfully craft beer and must-try food. Some seasonal favorites are the Bacon Cheddar Tots and The Huntsman Burger. It’s open for lunch, dinner, weekend brunch, and don’t forget the happy hour at the bar and the seasonal menus. People’s Republic This sports bar is more than just a sports bar: it’s actually a beer garden/ restaurant, themed after a German-style cathedral. The casual atmosphere is matched with a stunning view of the Las Vegas CityCenter - perfect for when you want to dine outside. Whether you stop in for a late-night drink or try some of their awesome food like the carne asada fries, you’ll love all this new spot has to offer. S
chool is back in session! While the thought of actually having to crack the books again might make your stomach ache a little, we found a school that will have your stomach pleasantly full. Public School On Tap has several locations throughout the southwest, and their first location in Vegas, Public School 702, recently opened for business at Downtown Summerlin. Walking in, you’ll be greeted with the works - a chalkboard showing the new brews on tap for that day, school books and globes everywhere, and your menu is one of those old black and white “composition notebooks.” In the end, it’s your taste buds that will be getting schooled. Beyond the immense number of rotating tap brews, their meals are equal parts creative and delicious. Bar food, done better. Their “Huntsman” burger with the B-L-T treatment and a little Huntsman cheese was a favorite off the burger menu. Starters are delicious, with the comfort foods (bacon cheddar tots, need I say more?) complementing the more healthy options (Mezze Plate with hummus, feta, and the like). Lunchtime brings the most culinary flare with a specials menu that will definitely pique your interest. One of those items, Eggs Benedict Pizza, brought two of my favorite things together for a dish that should be illegal it’s so good. Hopefully you catch them on a day it’s for sale. Leave the No. 2 pencils at home, grab your ID, and belly up to Public School 702. Gastronomy class is in session. MV

Restaurant Review: Tapas by Alex Stratta
D
ining in Las Vegas has transformed and casual is the norm. From food truck forces and local business start-ups, the term “white tablecloth” restaurant can be regarded to some as an anachronism. Yet, the highlyfavored industrial-inspired trends didn’t stop Chef Alex Stratta from serving his high quality dishes. Without sacrificing excellence, he has combined his culinary creations to be served in a contemporary atmosphere. In fact, Tapas by Alex Stratta could possibly be the chef’s most personal endeavor to date. He was active in the decision making for the restaurant’s décor. It was intentional to have pieces that you may find in a friend’s house and features several canvases by him and his fellow chefs. He still wanted to maintain the level of quality he’d offered in his Michelin-starred and five-star, five-diamond restaurants. The solution? Spanish tapas. “I felt like I wanted to move away from the fussiness of fine dining, and get closer to what I call the fundamentals of flavor,” says Stratta. Nestled in the lower level of Tivoli Village, Tapas serves “a variety of creative and contemporary ingredient focused small plates driven by the flavors of the Mediterranean with prominent Spanish accents.” “It’s not about what they eat, but how they eat,” Stratta says. “That sense of convivial dining, as well as a sense of discovery, is the feeling I wanted to establish. I’m
82
very proud of all the fine dining experiences that I’ve created. But this is how I really like to dine.” On our visit, our server Francisco was terrific. His service was supreme with attention to detail. He was informative and interactive which made our experience even more pleasant. We tried an array of the tapas on the menu and some of our favorites were the Medjool dates, the charred Padrón peppers, the heirloom tomato salad, the rock shrimp “al ajillo”, and of course the mixta paella, perfectly caramelized with robust flavors. The restaurant review crew enjoyed this restaurant including the food, staff, service and impeccable ambiance. Their staff is represented from different countries from all over the world. Tapas exceeds on many elements. In concept it goes beyond Spanish traditions, as Stratta wants to push your palate limitations to Moroccan and Tunisian flavors and techniques (chicken with apricots, lamb kebabs), as well as a bone marrow dip that comes from his ancestral Northern Italy. The menu includes cold tapas like Chilled Tomato Gazpacho soup and flavorful Spanish ‘Charcuterie, a Serrano ham, Chorizo and Lomo. Chef Linda Says.... Want A Slim Waistline? It’s Apple Harvest Time!
Chef Linda SAYS . . .
A
utumn means a lot of things: back to school, cooler weather, and apple harvest! There are over 7,500 varieties of these crunchy, delicious fruit and the peak of the season is late August through December, depending on the variety. Although apples can be found in grocery stores all year round, autumn is the best time to find all your favorites such as Honeycrisp, Granny Smith and Gala apples. Coming off summer, when we are outdoors exercising and being active, we slip into our comfy sweaters that hide the calories we enjoy consuming as the weather cools down. We drift towards comfort foods and forget all the fresh fruits of summer. Well, summer isn’t the only season of fantastic fruit! There is hope! An apple a day really will keep the doctor away, and your waistline will thank you. Garnish your autumn table with a bowl of bright, colorful, red and green apples as your centerpiece and for easy snacking. So many people think it’s difficult to eat well, or that it’s too much work to prepare healthy meals for their family, but an easy step to keep that fantastic figure heading into the holiday season is just to incorporate these high fiber treats into your daily routine. Simply put, apples can ward off disease and keep you healthy and lean. Did you know that Red Delicious and Granny Smith apples are among the best antioxidants you can eat? And what is simpler than a perfect food that is just grab-n-go?
86
Pack an apple as your lunch with some natural peanut butter or hummus. It will fill you up and provide lots of vitamin C, potassium and vitamin A. Believe it or not, amongst other benefits, a diet that regularly includes apples can protect against debilitating diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s as well as prevent several types of cancer and reduce your chances of adult-onset diabetes. Include apples in your clean-eating lifestyle: a combination of natural foods and a regular exercise routine will get you on your way!
FREE RECIPE! Slow Cooker Spiced Chia Apple Butter
Here’s a simple recipe to create delightful, spiced apple butter. I add chia seeds for the extra protein, fiber and omega3’s, and since the chia seeds absorb moisture, they help to thicken the butter to create a smooth, creamy butter. Use it to spread on whole grain bread or crackers, fill some buckwheat crepes, spoon over oatmeal, or even spread on lean pork tenderloin. For more apple recipes for a clean-eating lifestyle, visit www.cheflinda.me. MV 8 apples, peeled and diced (I use a mixture of Granny Smith, Braeburn, and Fuji) ½ cup raw honey 1 tablespoon cinnamon 1 /8 teaspoon mace 1 /8 t nutmeg ¼ teaspoon ground cloves ¼ cup white or black chia seeds Directions: 1. Place all ingredients in a slow cooker on low, and allow to cook overnight (you won’t believe how fantastic your home will smell!) 2. Remove softened apple mixture from slow cooker and puree in a food processor (or use a potato masher) 3. Pour into jars or Tupperware and keep in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Salute, which literally means “to health” in Italian, will feature dishes passed down from generation to generation in the Sautto family, as well as other signature Southern Italian dishes with an emphasis (as is the chef’s forte) on freshness. Milestones Two of Station Casinos’ most special restaurants, Hank’s Fine Steaks and Martinis at Green Valley Ranch Resort and the famed Oyster Bar at Palace Station, will celebrate their 10th and 20th anniversaries in October. MY DATING LIFE
Inside the World of Professional Pick-Up Artists
By Amy Elizabeth
I
was recently invited to the Pick-up Artist Super Conference, held here in Las Vegas. Love Systems, whose mission is to help men “succeed” with the ladies, hosted the conference. The company claims their training will help men attract, date, and seduce more high-quality women. Love Systems is so confident in its techniques, the company offers a money-back guarantee. Apparently, the art of picking up women is serious business! Men from all over the world attended the conference, consisting of various lectures and workshops. At night, the attendees go out to the Las Vegas clubs with the instructors testing their newfound pick-up artist skills. I had the pleasure of both sitting in on several daytime workshops and clubbing with the guys at night. I’m happy to report the conference was much less sleazy than it sounds. Most of the workshops focused on building confidence and self-esteem. Men really have to put themselves out there when trying to meet a woman--not only do they have to possess the confidence to approach, but they also need to learn not to take rejection personally. One workshop taught how to raise your energetic state, suggesting an “Inner Game” routine that included working out and watching comedies to warm up before going out to meet girls or going on a date. Almost every presentation emphasized leadership skills because women love a takecharge kind of a guy. The men also learned how to approach and communicate with women, as well as understand female psychology. The seminar on texting taught how to create deep conversation and really connect via text message. Later, the attendees practiced skills such as storytelling and body language. Of course, the pick-up artist super conference wouldn’t be complete without some more risqué workshops. Unfortunately, I had to leave before the “Strippers and Hired Guns” seminar. A “hired gun” is a woman whom you want to pick up but is working—i.e., waitresses, bartenders, bottle service girls. I did sit in on the most scandalous
96
seminar of the weekend called “Same Night Lays.” The instructor explained how he felt that texting a girl after you meet her to arrange a date was too much work, so he set out to be the best in the area of “same night lays.” I suppose, every pick-up artist must have a niche! The information he presented wasn’t revolutionary—he basically advised men to approach as many women as possible and not to let rejection deter them from their goal of taking someone, anyone, home. Ultimately, one of these girls is bound to say yes, and don’t forget, you have to ask her to leave the bar with you. The terminology for whatever a man says to women to get her to leave is called a “pulling statement.” If you can’t get anyone to go home with you, you’ll be known as an “AFC,” average frustrated chump.
Aside from the “Same Night Lays” workshop, I felt the techniques being taught at the conference were positive. It seemed as though the men just want to connect with women and learn what makes them tick, and the instructors genuinely wanted to help. As I was talking to the owner of Love Systems, one man walked up with a smile so big he was glowing. He thanked the owner, gushing about what an amazing service Love Systems was providing. What I gathered from the weekend was that these men really put a lot of time, money, and effort into understanding women better, which is actually pretty endearing. I walked away from the Pick-up Artist Super Conference realizing that women do have more power than they know. MV
MY DATING LIFE
What Are You Waiting For?? Your Life Is Waiting
O
ften I hear people say, when I get a partner I will travel or I will do this activity. Most often I hear it from women, which makes me wonder, why would you put your life on hold until you find your better half? We live in a beautiful world…explore it. Don’t be afraid of traveling alone. I have been doing this all my life. Summer is here…enjoy it! Traveling to Europe, Mexico, and many states in the USA has taught me one thing: that there are amazing people in the world that you will miss out on meeting if you don’t travel and get out of your comfort zone. For singles traveling alone, my advice is to either take a guided tour or plan your own. I usually plan my own but take many guided tours when I get to the location. Another great way to find out about the area is to speak with the concierge a few days prior to your arrival. I know it is not easy to go on your own, but what choice do you have—sit at home and wait for life to pass you by? You have got to try! Go for it!
easy for you to speak to strangers…I understand. The odds are, when you’re out, eventually you will meet someone versus staying alone in your room. Practice makes perfect. The next day, rent a bicycle at Santa Monica and enjoy the ocean breeze, walk on the ocean, let your stress melt away, and feel free to dream. You never know who you are going to meet on the beach. After two days of relaxation, you will come back to Vegas refreshed and relaxed, but most importantly, you experienced something new. Feeling lonely is an awful feeling, but somehow when you travel, seeing new scenery,

experiencing new things, and enjoying life, the loneliness diminishes. I know it never goes away, but it does not consume you as much as when you when you are at home alone on a Saturday night. Once you see how easy it is to travel alone, my hope is that you will broaden your horizon and spread your wings. You never know; you may meet your prince charming or princess. I know it is scary; therefore, I suggest starting by taking a day or two-day trip—to Malibu for example. Only 5 hours away from Vegas, you can be playing in the sand and smelling fresh sea air by 10 a.m. Leave you house at 6 a.m., drive to Venice Beach, park the car, and start walking along the famous stretch of street, filled with great little stores, restaurants, and more importantly, the very entertaining artists that are fun to watch. By 5 p.m. you will be hungry, so the perfect place is the Gladstone’s Restaurant. It is right on the beach with a breathtaking view of the ocean and incredible seafood dishes. At night, go on Tinder or any of the dating sites, and try to find a date, go for a drink, and meet someone new…hopefully by now you signed up to at least one, as I have suggested many times. Another option: go to the hotel bar and strike up a conversation. The idea is simple. There are very interesting people in the world…get to know them. It will make your trip much more memorable…always made mine. It may not be

Paying It Forward with Serving Hope LV
T
here’s more to Vegas than what meets the eye, beyond all the bright lights and pool parties. There are those less fortunate, worried about where they are going to get their next meals, where they will lay their heads for the night, or how they will feed their infants the next day. Awhile back, I came across my friend, Matthew Lindsey, on Facebook, and he was inviting everyone to come help serve those less fortunate during Thanksgiving. Sadly, I was leaving town and couldn’t attend. When you see people hurting, you just want to help. I always love seeing others smile, so when I came across Siloh Moses’s Facebook page and saw he was serving the homeless, I knew it was time to give back. There’s an amazing organization, Serving Hope LV, which serves those who are underemployed, unemployed, and less fortunate. Siloh Moses, who runs the organization, started Serving Hope LV one year ago. Strangers from all walks of life and different religious beliefs come together every Monday night from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. to
serve those in need. It’s an organization for the community, by the community. Father John (no relation to the organization) started bringing PB & J sandwiches 15 years ago on the same streets we serve at today, and he still serves them to this day. As a matter of fact, Serving Hope LV doesn’t even serve anyone until he blesses the meal. Serving Hope LV is not affiliated with any church organization, and this allows every volunteer to know that we are all there for the same purpose: to give back to those hurting the most. I’ve been volunteering for a month now, and to see the smiles on those faces every Monday at the “Give Back Mondays” event is priceless. It’s enough to bring me and over 70 volunteers back every week. No one is paid to show up, nor will anyone ask you for cash to support the organization. You donate whatever you can whether it is new or used clothing, snacks, or a homemade meal you cooked. We all started out as strangers who showed up because we felt the

need to do so, and we end up leaving united as one and as an extended family. Serving Hope LV has been able to serve close to 1,000 less fortunate friends per week here in the valley and will continue to do so every Monday night. To date, Serving Hope LV has served over 22,500 individual plates of food, over 17,000 articles of clothing, and over 13,000 bottles of water - in just under one year. Serving Hope LV has been blessed to have Starbucks and CiCi’s Pizza join the team as corporate sponsors, and we’ve also had support from our Las Vegas Outlaws football players. We hope to double our efforts and serve 43,000 families by 2016. Pay It Forward! MV

The Deacon Jones Foundation: Forever Changing the Game
By Brooke Dillman
T
o say Deacon Jones was a football phenomenon would be an understatement. As an NFL legend in the Hall of Fame who coined the term “sack,” this defensive lineman impacted football history in countless ways. In Deacon’s fourteen years in the NFL, he played for the Los Angeles Rams, the San Diego Chargers, and the Washington Redskins. Not surprisingly, Sports Illustrated named him “Defensive End of the Century.” While he undoubtedly left his mark in the world of football and changed the course of the game, there is one milestone of his that did not take place on the field but off it. Deacon was more than a football star; he was also a role model for underprivileged youth. In 1997, he and his wife, Elizabeth, formed the Deacon Jones Foundation in California. Together, they guided students through a seven-year program that would eventually lead to college and bright futures. Using his own disadvantaged upbringing as motivation, Deacon developed a charity that provided resources to students who would not have received them otherwise. In return for these opportunities, the chosen students were expected to help out in their own communities, thus creating a cycle of service. The program’s many offerings included: mentoring, networking with large corporations, internships, college expenses, and much more. “In short, we gave them everything that most of us give to our own children without thinking about it, but for these students it was something they never had and never expected,” Elizabeth says. The Deacon Jones Foundation succeeded beyond belief. Young students matured into high-achieving adults, ultimately coming out of the program with exceptional careers and promising futures. However, after Deacon’s passing in 2013, Elizabeth was faced with a tough choice: to continue the Foundation or to end it. Deciding to preserve Deacon’s mission proved to be the right choice. After relocating to Las Vegas, Elizabeth was determined to take the Foundation’s original ideas and alter them to fit the Vegas valley. Pulling a few strings and using her connections, Elizabeth reestablished the
100
Deacon Jones Foundation with a new twist: a one-of-a-kind art program benefitting inner-city youth. Today, the program is officially licensed by the NFL, which means the famous trademarks are featured in the production and distribution of the artwork. Although the venture has changed, the goal remains the same: helping students reach their full potential and fulfill their dreams. Given the support of the NFL and today’s most talented artists, the program now has a line of footballinspired prints that are exclusively offered through the Foundation. The charitable pieces of art are all special-edition reproductions of the finest works. With highquality materials, each painting is reproduced into giclée prints on archival canvas. Featured on the market are renowned artists like Edgar Brown, Tony Capparelli, and Jota Leal—just to name a few. The NFL-related art depicts some
of the most influential players and memorable moments in football history. Proceeds from the sales of these unique prints go toward the development of various inner-city school programs throughout Las Vegas. To make a difference in the lives of underprivileged youth, sports fans and art collectors alike can purchase these valuable pieces through the Foundation’s online shop or by arranging an offline transaction. New paintings are being added to the collection constantly, further exemplifying how the game is always changing when it comes to Deacon Jones. “Just like my husband, I cannot accept anything but success, and I will work day and night to achieve it,” Elizabeth says. Through his wife’s continuation of his namesake charity, Deacon’s passion lives on. He will forever be a hero both on and off the field. MV

Experience Hawaii’s Culture at Outrigger Resorts
By Nancy Daniels
G
uests of Outrigger Resorts in Waikiki come to Hawaii for more than surf and sunshine – though these are two of the islands’ most generous resources. Visitors are also lured by Hawaii’s transcendent culture, a product of the legendary spirit of aloha which
102
has inspired local artists, musicians, craftspeople and culinary gurus for generations. Together, they have created a cultural richness you won’t find anywhere else on earth. And you can experience it all, first hand, when you visit either of Outrigger’s premier Waikiki resorts.
Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort rises above a white sand shoreline that was once a gathering place for Hawaiian royalty. Here, even the trade wind breeze is soothed by the gentle harmonies of the island’s most renowned musicians, who serenade the resort day and night. It’s an
MYHAWAII
atmosphere that encourages many guests to take leisurely, on-site lessons in ukulele or hula. There are also opportunities to hear storytellers evoking Hawaii’s great myths and legends; to learn age-old Hawaiian arts and crafts like petroglyph printing or lei stringing; to sample the latest in local-style cuisine at the poolside Kani Ka Pila Grille; and to renew marriage vows in an authentic Hawaiian ceremony by the sea (available to guests at both resorts). Against the backdrop of Diamond Head Crater, Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort is a living symbol of authentic Hawaiian beach lifestyle – from food and fashion to music and sport. Here in
this oceanfront paradise, local culture is alive and ever present. Live Hawaiian music – both traditional and contemporary – is as continuous and calming as Waikiki wave breaks. Beach boys still hang out at Duke’s Waikiki, the resort’s legendary, open-air restaurant. And, in addition to classes in ukulele, hula, and Hawaiian crafts, you can immerse yourself in the exhilaration of surfboarding, body boarding, or outrigger canoe surfing – all just a stroll (and a splash) away. Best of all, both Waikiki resorts are home to Ke `Ano Wa`a (or The Outrigger Way) – a genuine expression of hospitality that establishes a lasting, heart-felt bond between guest, host,
and the culture of the local community. Today, every Outrigger property – from the Pacific Rim to the Indian Ocean – embodies the same values, without sacrificing its own distinctive sense of place and culture. The benefit for guests is a sense of family in an intimate atmosphere that inspires rejuvenation, discovery and unbounded joy. It’s A Freakin’ Frenzy! Fantasy Football Time!
W
ith summer behind us, and the arrival of cooler weather, the levels of anticipation for the 2016 football season are well underway. Fantasy football is ever emerging once again and with over 56.8 million Americans participating in the game of drafting your own football team and tracking their stats all season, it’s fair to say that Vegas has its fair share of loyal locals who participate in this American phenomenon. According to the Fantasy Sports Trade Association, fantasy sports players are younger, better educated, with higher household incomes and more likely to have fulltime employment and the stats on fsta.org show just that.
For those who aren’t familiar how fantasy works, let me help break down the basics for you.
Trust me, you don’t have to be a sports aficionado to play fantasy football or enjoy it. Years ago when I joined the Vegas ViXXXens all girls’ league, I had no idea what I was in for. However, with my competitive nature, I was thoroughly enthralled before the draft had even begun. 12 ladies who rarely are able to all get together, drinks, with breaks every 15-20 minutes make for a long draft party, but I was hooked. I wanted certain players and I researched players and stats like no other to come in 2nd or 3rd the 1st season, but getting my glorious 1st place the 2nd season I played.
Some leagues have a buy in and some play for the love of the game. It’s at the discretion of the league owner or commissioner… but when in Vegas! We played for the money and the fun. For me, the most enjoyable part of playing on the league was the camaraderie with the ladies. We would get together most Monday nights at Red Rock sports bar to watch MNF and track our players, which rarely would happen or be a priority during off season.
106
There are various different league types and websites that allow you to input your league info online after the draft is complete. We used espn.com. It was very user friendly and simple to navigate in order to set your line up. Naturally they also have an app for that, which was especially convenient for me being that I couldn’t guarantee where I would be before kickoff, which is when you have to have your line set each week and both the website and mobile app gives you the ability to track your players’ scores in real time.
The idea is to draft a team of players that is
By Candice Shaffer
virtually impossible in real life. For instance, you may be rooting for your favorite team who’s playing against your fantasy football defensive team (who you also want to do well and score points), all while rooting for a quarterback, running back, wide receiver, and a kicker all on different teams. You also have to take into consideration bye weeks and injured players. For instance, if you have the Steelers as your defensive and don’t have a back up defense team, you will have to pick up a free agent (team or player that isn’t on another player in your league’s team) in order to get any points from your defensive position on the Steelers’ bye week. The point of the game is for each of your players to score as many points as possible, based on their performance on the field each week in order to make it into the playoffs, and be compete for the Championship. You also have the ability to drop players, pick up free agents and trade players with other fantasy owners in the league. Every move you make all season basically indicates how you would stack up as a Coach. Fantasy football is a lot of fun all season and yes, fantasy football players literally yearn for it to start all year. Visit MYVEGASMag.com online for details about upcoming viewing parties we will be hosting this season, and bring your team and your A-game to next season’s draft party! MV
MY GOLF
5 Things to Discuss on the Golf Course
W
e offer five hot topics that are sure to liven up your round of golf:
1.
Summertime Movies. No summer is complete without box office blockbusters on the big screen and the movies this year did not disappoint. Talking about your favorite flick is always good conversation for the green. From spies in “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” and “Spy” to awesome super heroes, dinosaurs in “Jurassic World” and acca-excuse me… don’t forget about the singing beauties of “Pitch Perfect.” There was something for everyone. Marvel had a strong presence with both “Ant-man” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” For the kiddos, both ‘Inside Out’ and ‘Minions’ were little people pleasers. And talking about the little people…
2.
3.
Back to School. There is no denying the cosmic shift that happens when your kids go back to school. It’s a total transformation of the household schedule. This is a great opportunity to get some insight from your golfing buddies on how they (or their wives) are managing. Also, worth discussing are what after-school programs they are participating in and which ones work best for their families. It could result in the answer for that question of what activity you have wanted to put your kids in to help them stay active. Are You Ready for some Football?! Lions, Tigers and Bears…. And Packers, Steelers and Cowboys! The NFL season is upon us and no matter what team you represent, most everyone is a fan of this time of year. Another fun thing you can participate with your friends is Fantasy Football. Just make sure you are up to date on all of your injury reports and trades. It is a coveted time of year where we all barbecue a little more and yell at the TV.
By Jennifer Miller
4.
Presidential Election. Hillary Clinton, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and businessman Donald Trump are probably the biggest candidates in the Democratic and Republican presidential primary fields, respectively. Trump, meanwhile, has seen a remarkable reversal in both his support and popularity in the state since May. On the Democratic side, Clinton’s support has seen some decline but we have a long race ahead.
5.
Work to Network Make yourself a force on the course. A different but just as effective “tee time” to get together and drive some business to your business. Golfing is the best time to network yourself. Use your same great work etiquette in a golfing capacity. You already know the basics of golf so instead of totally focusing on your own score use the common ground of golfing as a platform to take potential clients or someone you are interested in doing business with. Keep in mind for these golf sessions that the real motivation is to build relationships in a relaxed environment. MV

“Who Knew” With Carrot Top 1. First thing I do in the morning is... Roll over to see my dog lying next to me with her ball in her mouth, waiting for me to throw it in the pool…but first coffee! 2. One thing I like to do after work is… review the show. What went good, what went bad, then go get sushi. 3. One of my favorite Las Vegas restaurants is… Honey Salt – great food, great vibe. 4. One of my favorite Las Vegas shows is… Elton John. He’s a true icon, and how often do you get to watch a living icon perform? 5. I wish I knew how to… sing like Freddy Mercury and dance like Michael Jackson. 6. A person who inspires me the most is… someone who has totally mastered their craft. I saw Billy Crystal on Broadway in 700 Sundays, and I thought I should just quit after - he was that good. 7. When I leave Las Vegas I like to go to… go home to Florida. 8. I wish I could quit… playing with my hair. My friends always call me out for touching it like 800 times during my show. 112
9. On my day off I like to… Relax at home with my girlfriend, enjoying a homecooked meal. She owns her own catering company, AnyThyme Catering, so it’s always delicious. 10. One thing I wish I were better at… filling out this questionnaire.
11. One thing I can’t live without is… my crew. They have been with me from day one, and they are like family. 12. My one strange habit is… I spend hours every morning plucking body hair…well you asked for strange.
