ere at MyVegas, are hearts are heavy and we are deeply saddened for the tragedy that struck our amazing city and our loved family, friends and neighbors. We want to express our sincere love, condolences, sympathy and support for everyone effected by this horrific event. And our praise for how this city responded. How the LVMPD Police, the Fire Department, the Medics, the Doctors and Nurses reacted, and their remarkable response to this unexpected heinous crime, in addition to the chaos they faced every minute of this travesty. And even the strangers there that night, helping each other to escape the rage and protect each other from the madness. The following days it was so amazing to see the community with their generous outpour of donations of blood, food, supplies, and money for the victims and their families. We pray that the God comes down and wraps his arms around these beautiful people, and sends extra love and support to the families hurting deep inside for the loss of their loved ones. It’s moments like this that we look at what’s important. Our families, our kids, our friends, this is the time, and all times, to show love to one another. I believe there is far more love in this

world than hate, and we need to show it now, more than ever. Lastly, this atrocity shall not define us. Instead, what defines Las Vegas is the acts of heroism we witnessed after the tragedy. And thank you to Crossing Church, where many of us take our pain, and pray to God for his help and love. Our prayers to everyone. Candy’s Commentary: From a Local’s Perspective

F

irst and foremost, our deepest condolences go out to the victims and families involved in the massacre that took place last Sunday, October 1st at the Route 91 Harvest Festival. As all Las Vegans, we were absolutely in shock due to the recent tragic events and being such a big city, small town, we immediately heard of victims and families of victims that we know personally. The numbness that has been echoed throughout the community will most certainly never be forgotten. However, the way our city has come together is nothing short of incredible! A sincere, heartfelt thank you to everyone that came together to support the heart of Las Vegas. From our dedicated Mayor Carolyn Goodman, our Sherriff, Mr. Joseph Lombardo and all of LVMPD, the first responders, local firefighters, all the citizens that offered support to both the victims and our hometown of Las Vegas… THANK YOU! We are most definitely living in perilous times, but that’s where coming together and supporting one another is crucial. Love conquers a multitude of sins. It’s important that we be sure to embrace our loved ones and never take moments with them for granted. Our thoughts and hearts are also with those areas that have been affected by earthquakes, sinkholes, tsunamis, volcanoes, wildfires, hurricanes and all the other things that have taken place recently. It’s not hard to see the vital signs of the world’s climate change that have created a worldwide weather phenomenon. With all the craziness our world has seen this last quarter, it’s comforting to know that Vegas is not impacted by natural disasters of this sort. Locals can already feel the crisp air and cooler reprieve in the transition from summer to fall

weather. After another scorching Vegas summer, I’m looking forward to the fall season, and I’m happy football season is back in full swing! This issue is dedicated to the 2017 Top 100 Men of the Year. Make no mistake — the men featured in this issue are a huge part of what makes the heart of our incredible city! Their impact on our economy and the services and products their companies provide are truly top notch. We are proud to bring you a dual-themed issue. In addition to the men’s issue, we are also highlighting the 2017 Top 100 Women in Real Estate. With the increase in real estate development around the city and housing prices at an all-time high in the Vegas Valley, we thought it was the perfect time to highlight some local ladies: leading real estate agents who work extremely hard and diligently to bring you some fantastic homes offered in the valley. The women bring unparalleled customer service, and they assist those who are looking to sell their property.

By Candice Shaffer

In addition to the Vegas Golden Knights and the future Las Vegas Raiders, we will soon be home to a United Soccer League (USL) team, and the local economy is sure to benefit from the influx of sport teams and fans. Born and raised in Las Vegas, I would often ask my family when a sports game was on television, “What team are we rooting for?” The typical response was, “Whatever team we bet on.” Growing up with no local teams to root for, I decided to pick a team that — interestingly enough —represented a city I later learned was where three of my grandparents were born. The Pittsburgh Steelers! Therefore, while I am loyal as ever to my all-time favorite NFL team, I am proud to say that I am through and through a Las Vegas Raiders fan now, too! With the Raiders’ move from Oakland comes NFL games at the incredible 65,000-seat domed stadium being developed right here in our backyards on the Las Vegas Strip. Just looking at the renderings makes me excited for what’s to come! We truly hope you enjoy the features in this issue, and we greatly appreciate your continued support of our advertisers. Please follow us on social media, and join us at one of our upcoming events! We wish all of our local readers and business leaders a wonderful fall season this year! MV

“What the Health” is one of Netflix’s most buzzedabout documentaries and has inspired thousands of people to give up animalbased products overnight. But are these people truly vegan, or simply following a plant-based diet? Here’s the meat of the matter on the notso-meaty types of lifestyles. First things first: veganism is not simply a diet. It is an ethical decision to live a lifestyle based on compassion, which excludes all forms of exploitation and abuse toward animals for food, clothing, entertainment or any other purpose. Vegans do not go to zoos or the circus, and they definitely won’t be seen wearing leather, wool, silk or fur. They avoid all products tested on animals, including makeup, toiletries and cleaning supplies. The vegan lifestyle helps save not only animals, but also the earth, as vegans naturally have the lowest carbon footprint. According to cowspiracy.com (the website based on the 2014 documentary, “Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret” and predecessor of “What the Health”), 1.5 acres of land can produce 37,000 pounds of vegetables, yet only 375 pounds of beef. The website also reports 1 to 2 acres of rainforest are cleared every second. When it comes to livestock (including byproducts), they make up 51 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. For perspective, exhaust from the world’s vehicles

Liz Miklosi

in all makes up 13 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, cowspiracy.com says. A whole foods plant-based diet emphasizes eating unprocessed foods in their natural form — not necessarily eating foods considered to be “vegan.” For example, fried onion rings and Oreos are vegan, but due to the processing, are not whole foods plant-based. Refined sugar, white flour and oil are all a big no-no in this regard. This diet instead embraces nourishing your body with whole fruits and vegetables, beans, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. People following this diet are generally motivated by the health benefits that come along with it — not by animal rights. However, just like vegans, plant-based dieters avoid eating animal-based products, including meat, dairy, eggs and fish. To compare, a person simply following a whole foods plant-based diet is not necessarily vegan, while a vegan may or may not be on a whole foods plant based-diet. But facts are facts, and either lifestyle has its benefits. Various studies have shown the elimination of animal-based products will reduce the risk of stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, heart disease and high cholesterol. MV However, everyone’s dietary needs differ, so it’s always important to consult with a doctor before drastically changing your diet or joining the latest health movement.

Autumn-Inspired Skin Care

By Erika Kimble, MA, MS, NP Dermatology NP

A

lthough Vegas temperatures may still pivot in the 100s, autumn memories plume with smells of pumpkin and apples, as earth tones dance before our eyes. Yet, the renewed interest in fall’s harvest not only coordinates with what’s on the dinner plate, but also with what’s on the skincare shelves. Here are six autumn-inspired skin products to keep your outer layer in season.

1.

Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin Enzyme Mask: This exfoliating pumpkin concoction peels away dullness, opens pores and smooths skin. It can be used twice a week to keep up that radiant glow well past summer.

2.

Kiehl’s Turmeric & Cranberry Seed Energizing Radiance Masque: If the spice of pumpkin doesn’t tickle your fancy, the sweet crimson extracts of cranberry could be a winner. This facial mask also brightens dull skin and renews vigor. Made with several antioxidants like cranberry, and rich in resveratrol and anti-inflammatory turmeric, this mask also provides anti-aging components.

3.

Juice Beauty Green Apple Age Defy Moisturizer: With the pectins and hydroxy acids of fruit — namely the green apple — this moisturizer battles signs of aging, yet does so with a gentle approach. It smooths rough patches and creates a more even skin tone.

4.

5.

10

Jason Natural Wild Yam Balancing Moisturizing Crème: This humectant is dedicated to hydrating skin from top to bottom. Its formulation with yam, licorice and ginseng soothes skin and replenishes moisture. These ingredients are touted as being specifically helpful for menopausal women’s skin. Fig + Yarrow Autumn Herbal Steam: After a warm towel soaks the steamy goodness of these fall herbs, relax and let these elements harvest peace and luxury in your mind and skin. This recipe uses chrysanthemum blossoms as an anti-inflammatory for imperfections and irritation; lavender, chamomile and marigold for soothing properties; and red clover to purify.

6.

Éminence Organic Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant: Top off your routine with a little strawberry rhubarb dessert. These antioxidant ingredients unleash agedefying results, while lactic and salicylic acids diminish dead skin cells.

Your skincare regimen doesn’t have to stay routine to be effective. As the seasons change, discover new products that can meet the needs of your skin under differing weather conditions. And just to add a bit of spice, uncover the benefits that some of these holiday-inspired products offer. hank you. Two words that evoke so much warmth. Two words that should be emphasized more than just on Thanksgiving.

For me, each day begins with an expression of gratitude: thank you for the ability to breathe and to get up out of bed. Each night, I end the day with more words of appreciation, either penned in a journal or merely said aloud: thank you for the blessings that surrounded me and my loved ones, and for the simplicity and serenity of a warm place to call home. I also know gratitude is what keeps us healthy as we make our way through the cooler months. With two children under the age of 3, keeping the sniffles out of the house may be easier said than done. Although, with these practices, we fare pretty well this time of year: 1. 2.

Hand washing with good old-fashioned bar soap. Getting fresh air and savoring one of the best seasons in our desert. If you’re physically able, get out and fill your body with fresh oxygen.

Now, if the sniffles and sore throat come by anyway, our remedy is sweet and soothing. It’s a throwback to summer — days when there weren’t usually so many bugs to fight. Try this recipe for pink paletas: Mexican popsicles full of vitamins and protein. Ingredients: 12 ounces raspberries (frozen)
1 cup milk 4 tablespoons honey

16

Directions: Blend all ingredients, and pour into a popsicle mold overnight. The next day, enjoy pink, messy, sweet and soothing goodness. MV

Salt, Not Just a Condiment…

hen most people think about salt, their first thought is “I need to reduce the intake of salt in my daily diet because of the negative effects it can have on my body.” That being said, there is a new method of using salt that is gaining popularity: salt caves! The term “Halotherapy” comes from “halo”- the Greek word for salt. Halotherapy, otherwise known as salt therapy, dates back to the 11th/12th century when people would visit Eastern Europe’s natural salt caves to heal their ailments. It is a treatment that involves the inhaling of salt particles. The negatively charged ions in salt improve our health and mood and can be very beneficial for several respiratory problems, skin conditions, and our mental health. These naturally produced negative ions are favorable over positive ions, which can be

produced from things like automobile exhaust or air conditioning. Salt therapy consists of sitting in a room coated with salt crystals and pumped full of salt-laden air. It is deemed 100% natural and safe for people of all ages. The décor in salt rooms tend to be pink Himalayan salt. Spa experts note that the concentration of particles in halotherapy is about 10 to 15 times the concentration found by the sea. A 45-minute session is equal to three days by the sea and is typically priced at around $35. If you’re looking for a new experience and way to relax, a salt cave just might be worth a try. MV

henever people ask me for fitness advice, they usually want me to tell them how to lose weight and gain muscle in the shortest time possible. Why is it that the most important thing to us in the whole world? OUR HEALTH is the one thing we don’t spend enough time nurturing and taking care of, especially when it is responsible for our entire well-being. We place the least amount of interest in making it our first priority: finances and love beat it every single time. I have to be honest with you all. When I decided to make a DRASTIC lifestyle change and started working out, I HATED IT!!! It was the one hour every single day that I dreaded more than a toddler’s first day at daycare. I hated it even more when I proved to be the most out of shape person in our group training, and there were men in my group sessions 20+ years my senior. I had such a hard time walking up a single flight of stairs that I tried to avoid it at all costs. I couldn’t figure out when I got so out of shape. I am sure many have seen my “before and after” photos that have been shared by thousands over the internet. I didn’t look as out of shape as I felt. Now look at me! I couldn’t imagine ever going back to the old me, but it wasn’t an overnight fix. (You would need a surgeon for that!)

I am going to share with you the key to changing your mind and body in only 30 days and hopefully it becomes a lifestyle. • Your mind needs exercise the same way your body does. If you stop exercising regularly, you start to lose your muscle mass and strength starts to decrease. Your brain is the same way. It starts losing its size and endurance. You can train your brain to love exercise and a healthy diet, the same way you trained it not to like exercise and unhealthy foods. • It will take a minimum of 21 days for you to start making things a habit and lifestyle. Stick with it, and it will stick with you! • Drink 3 liters of pure room temperature water a day. Many people are stuck on wanting to always drink something with flavor. The better it tastes, the more chemicals it has unless it’s freshly squeezed

By Tamra Trainer

or juiced from its raw or natural state. Train your taste buds to start liking water. Pure, clean refreshing water. After 30 days, you will never understand how you could have liked anything else! Eat three small meals (consisting of protein and vegetables and a complex carbohydrate like sweet potato) daily and two snacks (like a protein shake) in between. It makes me cry inside when I hear people say they only eat once a day. Your body cannot possibly run on one meal no matter how big that meal is. In fact, the bigger the meal, the more likely you are to gain weight from overloading your system all at once. It can’t burn as easily, so it will just store what it can’t burn. This is also why people often have that “crash” right after they eat a large meal. Be in it for the long haul. Don’t be worried about the destination, but start to enjoy the journey. A healthy lifestyle should last a lifetime. Although you will more than likely make a habit by day 30, you want to keep it a habit. If you stop after 30 days, it will quickly go away and so will your motivation. Each time gets harder, because we will always compare it to what we did in the past to get in shape and lose weight. We are never comparing anything else going on in our lives at the time like career, kids, circumstances, mindset. Wipe the slate clean. Think of this as a brand new adventure you are starting for the rest of your life. It’s much easier to go through life healthy than sick. Many never tie a poor diet to their illness. Sad but true, you treat the symptoms with medication, but never think the cause might have to do with what you are putting in your mouth. It all starts with food. Exercise five days a week. Even if it’s a walk around the block. Get your blood and oxygen flowing and heart muscle moving.

I am proud to share my insights and suggestions for developing a healthy mind in a healthy body. You are in control of your “self” - treat it like the precious possession it is. MV

We receive tons of Top 100 Men of the Year nominations each year, and although nominations don’t guarantee a position in the Top 100 Men of the Year, and we’d love the ability to feature the majority of the incredible nominees, the list has been narrowed down to these Top 100 Men of the Year for 2017. These extraordinary men have made a positive impact in our community and are both nominated and voted by our readers, through their service, commitment, charitable contributions, and big hearts. These men continue to give more than they receive, and they help make Las Vegas one of the most fascinating places to live, work and play. They are important men in our lives who we would like to honor and show our appreciation to. Featured are a diverse group from various organizations, including Law, Medicine, Politics, Finance, Real Estate, Arts, Entertainment, Education, Health Care, Philanthropy and more. Along with well-known leaders, and the new rising stars, this year we are proud to publish the “Top 100 Men of the Year.” You may recognize some friends and familiar faces, and some have credentials too many to list; however please note that their talents and contributions go far beyond what we had space to print. This year’s recipients are amazing men, who have achieved great success and contributed in more ways than one in Las Vegas and have influenced the community we live in. We truly hope you enjoy reading this special feature section as much as we enjoyed putting it together! MV

The Man and the ‘Theory’ Behind Orangetheory Fitness Las Vegas

By Blake Conover

hen Michael Worley moved to Las Vegas in 1987, he immediately went to work using his background in franchising and business development to start his own glass repair company. Over the years, he spent time at several Vegas properties on the Strip, and it was at the MGM Grand Hotel where he met his wife, Jill Oliver. Compared to his wife’s family — well-known Las Vegas residents since 1928 — Worley jokes he’s “still the new guy” with that clan. Oliver, who’s always had a passion for science, was studying to become a medical doctor. After medical school, Dr. Oliver moved with her husband to Arizona where she was stationed for her residency. But the two couldn’t wait to get back to their home in Las Vegas. Upon completion of her residency, Dr. Oliver worked in a clinic, but Worley knew his wife was capable of achieving much more. For this reason, he proposed opening their own medical clinics in Las Vegas: Glimpse Medical. With his history in business franchising for large corporations, Worley could manage the business aspects while Dr. Oliver focused on the medical side. The Glimpse Medical clinics specialize in weight loss, wellness/nutrition, hormone replacement and cosmetics. Worley and Dr. Oliver were able to open two locations within one year. While business was successful, Worley still felt he and his wife had an even greater potential to fulfill. Worley noticed that while their clients were indeed losing weight, some were physically fit and others were in need of exercise. That’s when an idea sparked for Worley: to get involved in the fitness industry. After doing his research and considering opening his own gym, he stumbled upon Orangetheory Fitness. At that time, there were only 350 locations nationally — compared to today’s 1,200 locations — and Worley knew instantly he wanted to be a part of the growing phenomenon. As fate would have it, an Orangetheory Fitness location was just across the street from one of the

clinics, and Worley wasted no time in contacting the owner. Worley purchased that location, a license to open two more and the area developer rights for Las Vegas and Clark County. Now with six locations in three years and three more locations under construction, it’s not hard to see why Orangetheory Fitness has taken the Las Vegas Valley by storm. So what exactly is the “theory” behind Orangetheory? The theory is if you spend 12 to 20 minutes per workout in the “orange” heart rate zone (84 to 91 percent of your maximum heart rate), you will experience excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. This is known as the “after burn.” After your workout, your body is still exerting energy, and you’re taking in so much oxygen to repair your body and muscles that you continue to burn calories for about 24 to 36 hours post-workout. The workouts focus on high-intensity interval training, and they utilize a unique heart rate monitoring system to ensure every member gets the most effective workout possible. The Orangetheory Fitness centers feature highly skilled coaches, and the environment is different from that of a typical “big box” gym in that it’s not intimidating. The class size is kept small so

every member gets the personalized attention they deserve. Your coach is with you challenging you to succeed, the classes are unique and well-rounded to give you all your cardio and weightlifting in one hour, and your results are emailed to you immediately after every class. All levels are welcome: from beginner to pro athlete. As Orangetheory Fitness has seen massive success, Worley and Dr. Oliver make it their goal to give back. They challenge business owners across the Vegas Valley to do the same. “Life has treated us well,” Worley said. “We’re driven by our goal to speak for those who can’t speak for themselves — people and animals alike — anyone who’s been neglected.” The couple donates generously to many local and national charities, including the NSPCA, A Home 4 Spot, and The Shade Tree. They are also active members in the GLCCNV, and seek to promote equal rights and diversity. “As humans,” Worley said, “we should all be able to see through other people’s eyes, be patient and tolerant to every walk of life. You never know where people are at in life and tolerance for humankind is important. We’re all the same — we’re people. Be a better man. Be a better human.” MV

LAS VEGAS www.sunsetclinics.com For someone who’s practiced more than a decade of emergency medicine, Dr. Mark Ferdowsian knows a crisis when he sees one. It’s for this reason that he established Sunset Clinic in Las Vegas in 2009, changing the healthcare system in the valley for good. The start of Sunset Clinic, which now has five locations around Las Vegas, began after Dr. Ferdowsian witnessed firsthand the revolving-door phenomenon that occurs all too often in the emergency medicine field. After practicing 10 years of emergency medicine, it became evident to Dr. Ferdowsian that many medical conditions were bandaged up by other doctors, with no definitive diagnoses made, leading to unnecessary referrals to specialists. Patients were led down a path of never-ending diagnostic tests — with ultimately no answers. Many of these patients ended up in the emergency department time and time again, frustrated with their care and hoping to get answers in the hospital, driving up the cost of medicine. Convinced that better medical practices were needed in the Las Vegas area, Dr. Ferdowsian opened Sunset Clinic, a multidisciplinary healthcare system established to help elevate the quality of care provided in the greater Las Vegas area. His goal from the beginning was to use evidence-based medicine to properly diagnose the patient, leading to proper treatment. Given the experience in the Las Vegas market, the Sunset Clinic team also partnered up with a hand-selected group of specialists based on their track records for providing compassionate, cost-effective care. This led to proper utilization of specialty care and utilization of the emergency departments for true emergencies. Today, with five locations and thousands of patients, Dr. Ferdowsian’s desired medical care is no longer a concept, but a proven healthcare system with a loyal and dedicated staff — a staff that strives to continue to elevate the level of healthcare provided in the greater Las Vegas area. Sunset Clinic is a team of professionals who wake up every day not wondering what society can do for them, but instead what they can do for our community and its citizens in order to improve patients’ health and quality of life — one patient at a time. Although the future of medicine is uncertain, one factor remains constant: patients stay with healthcare providers that are knowledgeable, willing to listen and willing to do what's right, no matter the cost. All citizens of Nevada who are willing to be active participants in their own well-being are invited to partner up with Sunset Clinic, not only to understand the current state of their health, but also to learn how to make lifestyle modifications that will help them become healthier and able to enjoy improved health and physical prosperity. The team welcomes you to Sunset Clinic, your neighborhood urgent care and family medicine healthcare system.

What Are You Thinking? This Guy Knows!

F

or the last 30 years, Jim Medick has mastered the art of knowing what people think and why. He he has no plans on slowing down any time soon, especially when there’s the future of Casino Gaming to think about! Jim and his company, Precision Opinion are leading the way. It all started when Jim was a child growing up in Wheeling, West Virginia. When his mother would take him along to buy household items, he noticed that she always preferred one cleaning product brand over the others. He asked his mother why she always chose that brand among the other selections. When she told him why, Jim noticed that it was due to the advertising commercial they saw on TV each night during the family’s favorite program. One day, it came time to buy the household items again. Jim went to the cleaning product isle and picked up the same brand that his mother had been using all along. When he got back to the cart, she replied, “Oh, no, son. Let’s get that brand over there.” She pointed to a brand-new bottle of Dawn Liquid. Curious why his mother would switch brands now, she recited the plot points in the Dawn Liquid commercial they had seen that morning in the newspaper. That sparked an interest in Jim that lead him down the path to being the “Master of Marketing and Research”.

After graduating from the University of Florida, Jim began his successful career in marketing and research by working for the Texas Rangers Baseball Club, Procter & Gamble, Mattel Toys, and the Gallup Organization. While working at the Gallup Organization, Jim decided to venture off on his own and start a small consulting firm based out of Princeton, New Jersey. This small consulting firm brought together all of Jim’s talents and knowledge acquired in Marketing and Research from throughout the years, and applied it to the one area where he knew he could affect the most change Atlantic City Casinos. By the mid 90’s, casinos were changing their marketing tactics and needed research to effectively execute the new

vision for Atlantic City. Medick delivered. His firm gained a reputation for delivering quality actionable research to the gaming industry. The efforts put forth in the gaming capital of East, soon caught wind over on the West… and Las Vegas came knocking on his door. “Everyone thought I was nuts,” said Medick, when discussing how he left the life he had known back East to come set up shop in Las Vegas with just himself and two assistants. “But I knew what had to be done. I knew that I could affect real change and I knew I could shake up the research industry.” Jim proudly proclaims that his magic formula was not only delivering top-notch quality research that delivered actionable results, but utilizing outside-the-box thinking and creativity when it came to data collection. Before long, Jim and his consulting firm had not only conducted gaming research for nearly every one of the casinos on the Las Vegas Strip, but also entertainment options regarding local shows, attractions, special events, and headliner entertainment across town. Jim put it simply by saying, “Yeah, Vegas has been good to me.”

By Dawn Gibbons

Jim’s small consulting firm has grown to become the research giant known internationally as Precision Opinion. His organization employs 850 individuals and has expanded beyond just the casino world. Now, they conduct research for national companies, politicians, news organizations, Presidential election campaigns and government agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration. There are no signs of slowing down for Jim Medick, either. In 2014, Precision Opinion had launched their online division, which took the quality research they are known for and brought it to the internet to be able to conduct research with anyone, anywhere, at any time, on any device. The growth of this division has resulted in office expansion where Precision Opinion now has offices located not just in Las Vegas, but also in Washington, D.C. and Brooklyn, New York. There is a new research battle on the horizons that Precision Opinion is at the forefront. Precision Opinion has come full-circle and is now re-focusing on the Gaming Industry. With the breakthrough evolution of Millennial Gaming and skill-based casino games, Precision Opinion is launching The Gaming Club - a non-monetary gaming center located in Downtown Las Vegas, where the testing of risk, reward, marketing and interest will be conducted on a daily basis to locals and tourists alike. “We’ve done a lot of research on this,” says Jim. “And if there is one thing I trust, it’s my firm’s research.” For Jim Medick, the journey is just beginning. The future is looking bright - full of neon signs and bells from hitting the jackpot. Jim is the man behind the marketing and research that people witness in our daily lives. But he is most proud of his three children - Christian, a Lieutenant Commander in the Coast Guard, Alexander, the Marketing Executive of Precision Opinion, and his daughter Meagan, an Emmy award winning Executive producer for the morning news in San Diego, California. Las Vegas Real Estate Market

T

HE MARKET IS HOT: The local Las Vegas real estate market is on fire! And it’s set to be cooking for the next few years! With the onset of our national sports teams, The Las Vegas Knights Hockey team, and the Las Vegas Raiders, this town is set to explode with real estate values. The under $300,000 home market is selling super-fast. 83% of homes in this rage are selling in 60 days. Some homes, if set to sell right, and move in ready, are selling as quick as same day. And in this market, some properties for sale are receiving multiple offers, as much as 20-25 offers on the same house, all at once. The median price in Vegas is now at $260,000, which is up 10% from last year, and these homes are flying off the shelf. In some cases, homes in this price range are selling “over appraisal” because of the shortage of homes for sale in today’s Las Vegas market. (Recent MLS count was only

5157 homes on the market). And 2017 Sales are outpacing last year 2016. Luxury homes, ($750,000 and higher), are also moving at a fast pace than usual. Average days on luxury market are around 120, and the selling prices are very close to the listing price, if not the same. For those in a pinch for the down payment, you might want to consider the HIP program! Home is Possible. Many lenders are offering this “Grant” program, to assist you in coming up with your entire down payment. Very attractive for those who thought they could not buy a home. With the HIP program, a Home is Possible! Rate Watch: Rates are floating around 4.0% and make it very affordable to buy a home

Winterizing Your Home

W

e all share the same sentiment in Las Vegas as summer comes to a close. As much as we love our three-digit temperatures (more than we care to admit), we’re ready to ring in the cooler temps and holiday preparations. Bring on the layered sweaters, boots and pumpkin spice lattes. Proactively completing simple tasks to winterize your home will ensure you’re comfy and cozy during the winter months. It’ll save you some money on your energy bill and potentially spare you from unwanted costly repairs. Here’s the perfect checklist for you: A/C: Our A/C units have been on for quite some time now. We can expect a glorious few weeks of leaving them off and opening our windows to let in the nice fall air; this is a great time to get your HVAC systems checked. Air filters: One of the simplest things you can do to get ready for winter is change your air filter monthly. Clogged filters decrease proper airflow and the efficiency of your system. A set of filters may cost about $20 at your local hardware store. Air ducts: The US Department of Energy reports a 20 percent loss of air that flows through ducts not properly sealed. Check duct joints for proper connections and any areas in which the air can escape. Insulate your ducts also. The goal is to keep all the warm air you’re paying for where it serves the best purpose. Programmable thermostats: Programmable thermostats save you time and money, and they’re a do-it-yourself fix as they’re easy to install. You can set your temperatures to automatically adjust to a lower setting while you and the family are out of the house. The recommended number is a low 58 degrees. This will still keep your house comfortable while you’re away and won’t take extra energy to warm up to your normal settings when you get home. This is also the number suggested for when you and the family are sleeping. Insulation: A well-insulated home provides a comfortable environment all year: it helps keep out the cold air and keep in the warm air. Check your attics or crawl spaces. If you

74

feel a draft, even after closing all doors and windows, you most likely need to add on to the existing insulation or replace it all completely. Remember, discolored and wet insulation needs to be removed immediately to prevent mold and unhealthy toxins in the air you breathe. Insulation is measured in R-values. The higher the R-value is, the higher the level of insulation. For our mild winter climate, the Department of Energy recommends at least R-11 insulation in the walls and floors, and at least R-19 in ceilings. If your home was built in the 1970s or earlier, you should have a professional help upgrade your home’s insulation. While hiring a professional may not be a welcome expense, it’ll save you hundreds of dollars annually on your power bill. Windows and doors: The goal is to keep as much of the cold air out as possible. Check all windows and doors for broken seals where the cold air can enter your home. Apply caulk around windows and doors, smoothing it over with the end of a toothbrush for a professional result. Purchasing a caulk gun and tubes of caulk from a hardware store for less than $50 will save you up to 30 percent on your energy bill. Ceiling fans: Set your ceiling fans to reverse (counterclockwise). This helps push warm air back into your living spaces.

By Angela Pacelli

Fireplaces: There’s a comfort in the sound of a crackling, wood-burning fireplace. Having your fireplace inspected once annually will ensure you hear that soothing sound all winter. Smoke detectors/carbon monoxide detectors: This is a good time to change the batteries on your devices. Changing them once yearly is recommended. Dusting them while you’re up on the ladder is also a good idea. Storm drains and gutters: Storm drains and gutters are easily forgotten because there’s not much rain in Vegas. However, the small task of clearing them of debris from summer winds and monsoon rains will protect your home against leaks and potential mold. Once you’ve cleared all debris, check for any misalignments by pouring water down the gutters and drains. Proper irrigation will save you from potential water damage and a big repair bill. Outdoor pipes: It’s seldom we dip below freezing temps. However, you should shut off valves to avoid even the slightest risk of pipes bursting. Insulation for your outdoor pipes is available at your local hardware store and serves as extra precaution at preventing such bursts. Following this checklist will get you ready for winter in no time. Now you can focus on packing that summer wardrobe and pulling out the nice, cozy socks and sweaters to enjoy our nice winter. MV

Increase Your Home’s Value Without Breaking the Bank

M

ost people look upon the purchase of their new home, whether brand new or resale, with excitement and accomplishment. The truth is that everyone’s taste differs. So when moving into your home, you might like what a previous owner has done with the interior, or you might want a fresh look and want to put your own stamp on it to create a comfortable living space that’ll bring you and your family years of enjoyment.

4.

If your home comes with a covered patio, coating it with a high-quality stain will bring it to life and accentuate the outdoor living space.

Houses are often a symbol of the American dream and, in some cases, a legacy to be passed down through the family. So as homeowners, we are always looking at different options to increase the value of our home, and to reinvent it as time goes by or as styles and designs change. Here are some options you can do to increase the value without breaking the bank:

By Donna Sicoli

7.

Converting your front yard landscaping from grass to a beautifully designed desert landscape will not only bring your costs down on lawn maintenance, but will also provide you with a captivating look and will enhance your home’s exterior.

8.

Energy-efficient windows are an upgrade that will provide you with a reduction on your electric bill. There are many variations from which to choose: from bay to bow to custom designed — all of which will bring added value to your home.

9.

Remodeling your bathrooms is another sure way to increase your home’s value, whether it be redesigning your tub/shower to a walkin, adding granite countertops, installing new tile or just updating your fixtures. These options can bring you that newfound look you seek.

10. Natural lighting gives a feeling of serenity 5.

6.

1.

Crown molding is a guaranteed upgrade that will add elegance and style while accentuating the interior of your home.

2.

Replacing your kitchen cabinets with an updated color and design, and upgrading your appliances will increase the value of your home and give it that “wow” factor.

3.

Replacing carpet and/or linoleum with an upgraded tile or wood floor will open up your living area and create the illusion of added space.

78

Most homes come built with a standard sliding door, but a nicer option is to replace it with a set of French doors. It will give you a more open look to your backyard and interior living space. A newly painted interior and exterior in warm colors will give your home a fresh, clean appearance.

and calm, and it brings warmth to smaller spaces. The choices are extensive, ranging from ambient to recessed lighting and smaller types of fixtures.

There are some homeowners who will want to take advantage of upgrading their home at some point in time, and this summary can enlighten them on ways to add value to their home and to create a comfortable living area — without burning a hole in their pocket. MV

Rock and Reilly’s Las Vegas By Michele Polci, CPCE, CMP and Shauna B. Lederman, CPCE, CHE

Enter: Rock and Reilly’s. With locations in NYC, Park City, and several locations in LA, the Las Vegas outpost appropriately opened this past St. Patrick’s Day. With the moniker, “Troublemaking since 1918”, it was a perfect location to have an after work girls get-together. One of us stuck to our “tried and true” vodka & soda but our wonderful bartender/server Shaun sold us on his personalized version of the drink adding elderflower liqueur and needless to say, we’d order another… That was not all! The other is a whisk(e)y enthusiast and hasn’t met one she couldn’t drink. Turns out Shaun is also a whisk(e)y specialist and Rock & Reilly’s has over FIFTY to choose from! Shaun was excited and passionate and completely went off-script making an amazing Old Fashioned featuring Jameson Black and black walnut bitters. Round two was made with Hennessey VSOP, Fernet, chocolate bitters, one sugar cube, and a Luxardo cherry muddle. This girl doesn’t even care for chocolate but still can’t stop dreaming about this cocktail!

84

All of the staff encountered were fun, energetic, and passionate. Most importantly, they were knowledgeable and wanted to share Reilly’s story. The menu is extensive covering a wide range of elevated pub food. It should go without saying that we started with the Irish Nachos. The perfectly cooked house-made kettle chips are layered with generous amounts of Irish cheddar, peppered bacon, corned beef, scallions, and corn salsa. The corned beef is on point as it is lean, tender and unbelievably savory. After hitting a home run with our starter, one of us had to have more corned beef. This time, it was the star of the Ruben Sandwich. The flavorful corned beef was piled high and crowned with sauerkraut, Reilly’s secret sauce, Swiss cheese and

O

ne of us loves Irish Nachos even more than she loves Irish Pubs so we were excited to try the newest Irish Pub in the Las Vegas Valley.

served on traditional rye bread. It was delightfully messy, as any good Reuben should be, but that is what forks and knives are for. The French fries served with the sandwich rounded out the dish and were perfectly executed. #fries We also could not go without enjoying the Irish Cheddar grilled cheese and tomato soup. Voted one of the “Top 10 Grilled Cheese Sandwiches” by Good Morning America, the grilled sourdough bread was topped with melted Irish cheddar and bread and butter pickles. The pickles added a brilliant crunch, sweetness, and acidity to the sandwich. The house-made tomato soup provided a well round balance to the sharpness of the cheddar and crispness of the bread. This Irish rock pub is fun and funky with character and no shortage of Reilly’s famous quotes. The walls are decked with plenty of TVs and there is no doubt this would be a great spot to catch a game. On the night of our visit, the patio had a great vibe with an amazing solo performer. It was too hot for one of us but we could still enjoy the music from our perch inside. There is also a stage inside that is used for weekly entertainment. Large groups will definitely have a home here. The restaurant is located in the Hawaiian Marketplace and has great pricing for a Strip location. Parking is tricky for locals but free. There is an adjacent parking lot that validates with your receipt but you have to look for it. Visitors will find it to be a great location center strip and easy to get to if you are walking the Strip. To quote Reilly, “The best drinks are the ones we have with friends.” And that’s what she said. MV

rowing up in Los Angeles, Contreras always knew she wanted to pursue a profession in the culinary field. After graduating from The Kitchen Academy in Los Angeles, she began working at Blowfish Sushi, familiarizing herself in multiple areas of the kitchen — including pastry. She recognized her skill in the position, and others did too. So when she was offered a role as pastry chef at Wilshire Restaurant, she jumped at the chance. It was there that she honed her skills and developed her love for creating culinary confections. Contreras then headed to the celebrity-filled neighborhood of Beverly Hills to work alongside Chef Kerry Simon at the Sofitel hotel, making decadent desserts for the who’s who of the glittering zip code. Adding to her impressive resume, Contreras also made stops at Providence — a two-time Michelin star-winning restaurant — and Villetta in Brentwood. Additionally, she prepared dessert courses at the prestigious James Beard House in New York City. In 2012, Contreras joined the award-winning hospitality company, The ONE Group, as a pastry chef at STK Los Angeles before moving two years later to fulfill the same position at STK Las Vegas. She now serves as corporate executive pastry chef for The ONE Group, overseeing the dessert menu development and creation at all of the STK restaurants nationwide.

While she loves using fresh fruit, her loyal go-to ingredient is chocolate because of the endless possibilities it offers. One of her recent standouts is a massive, decadent ice cream sundae, topped with sprinkle cookies and colorful macarons — perfect for that Instagramworthy photo. When asked about her favorite aspect of being a pastry chef, Contreras said it’s being able to be a small part of someone’s milestone or celebration. Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, engagement or promotion, a sweet treat is always part of the festivities, and she’s happy to help commemorate. Just last year, Contreras was named “Pastry Chef of the Year” by the Nevada Restaurant Association. The accolade was given for her artistic and multi-inspiration style, as well as her continued dedication to advancing the pastry industry through sharing her expertise, skills and knowledge with younger generations. Committed to supporting the Las Vegas community, Contreras for the past three years has participated in the Desserts Before Dinner gala to benefit Girl Scouts of America. MV

Melt chocolate in medium bowl and set aside. Keep warm. Whip heavy cream to medium peaks and keep cool. In another mixing bowl whip yolks until light and fluffy. Big Things in Store for Local Hotels and Casinos By Lori Nelson Station Casinos

Y

ou asked, and we plan on delivering — big time! If you’ve driven by Palace Station or the Palms lately, you’ve probably noticed there are a lot of busy construction workers, and there’s a good reason for that. We’re reinvesting and renovating two of our company’s most recognized hotel-casinos. At Palace Station, we began efforts to completely modernize our first casino that got its start back in 1976. The entire casino exterior has been updated. We’ve recently added a spectacular new bingo room, a new casino valet and entrance, and we began work on a complete update to our casino floor. We’ve also announced more upgrades, including the addition of three restaurants (with a new buffet located on the casino floor), a resort-style pool complex, a new race and sports book, an updated poker room, and the addition of luxury movie theaters. At the Palms, we already introduced the first of many incredible upgrades coming to the resort-casino with the arrival of Lucky Penny Café. The new buffet will debut later this year, as well as two additional new restaurants joining the culinary lineup. But wait — there’s more. The entire casino floor and movie theaters will be upgraded, along with a renovated meeting and convention space, many upgrades to the hotel registration areas, and enhancements to the landscaping throughout the property. Don’t Forget to Think Pink This October Station Casinos dedicates every October to “pinking” out all its dining, entertainment and gaming offerings. And for every pink item our guests enjoy, Station Casinos donates a portion of its profits and gaming winnings to Susan G. Komen Nevada and the local chapter for American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events. The eighth annual Project Pink begins October 1. To date, we have donated $434,000 to the fight against breast cancer. Also, mark your calendars and join 25,000 of your neighbors and friends at the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at Red Rock Resort on October 29. MV

MY CAREER

Applying for Jobs — Even When You Lack Experience

L

et’s face it: applying for your dream job is exciting, but it can also be discouraging when you don’t feel as though you meet the minimum requirements. Most applicants go through the process of reading numerous job postings, only to strike through most of them because their education and/or experiences don’t align perfectly with what the organization seems to want. However, many of those on the job hunt are more qualified than they imagine. Below are some tips to help you uncover the hidden potential in your resume. Strong Career Objective The first part of writing your resume is to state your career objective. When writing, focus not on what the organization can do for you, but instead on how you will assist the organization in attaining its goals. Make sure your objective is clearly aligned with the organization to which you’re applying.

By Anthony Lai

Skills That Are Relevant and Transferable Identify key words in the job description and incorporate those into descriptions of your professional work. For example, if the job requires experience in administrative, clerical or even data entry work, you should use those keywords in your resume. Adding these transferable skills will get the prospective employer to notice your work and what you’ve accomplished. Education Counts You may run into a challenge in which your previous work experience isn’t relevant to the job for which you’re applying. The best solution in these cases is to emphasize your education, especially if you earned any certification or completed any course that’s relevant to the job. Many job applicants prioritize work experience, but education is often just as valuable to an organization. Miscellaneous Projects Volunteerism and ad hoc work should be added to your resume as part of your professional experience. Even though volunteer work isn’t paid work, your miscellaneous projects should be listed on the resume to demonstrate your interest in the field and dedication to keeping abreast of current developments. These types of projects also show employers that you stay busy even if not employed.

Include a Cover Letter Sometimes a resume isn’t enough to convince the employer to contact you. If you lack relevant work experience, a strong cover letter can provoke interest in your application. Be sure to specifically describe your career objectives and why you want the job. This will give the employer the opportunity to learn more about your qualifications and will enhance your chances of an interview. Incorporating these additions into your resume will assist any employer in seeing you as a quality candidate. Employers today welcome applicants who come from diverse backgrounds, and your work experience — although valuable — is not the final determining factor in getting hired. MV

Meet Andrea Martinez MISS NEVADA

Your platform, PACT: Police and Communities Together, is progressive and relevant in today’s political conversation. What’s your personal attachment to your platform, and its importance to the state of Nevada as well as the entire country? It began with my criminal justice degree, as a lot of my professors were police officers. I got to hear a different perspective, (and) began seeing how there can be a disconnect between officers and the communities they serve. It struck me as the source of the issues we see today – there isn’t a relationship, understanding, or open line of communication within a majority of the nation’s communities.

A

ndrea Martinez is on a winning streak, and she’s not planning on losing steam anytime soon. Her down-to-earth personality is infectious and charming, but our 23-year-old Miss Nevada is determined to use her title to illuminate social and political concerns with real solutions. I sat down and chatted about her whirlwind experience - or lack thereof - in the world of pageants, and why this opportunity is so important to her: You are brand new to pageant competitions? When did you start? Yes! I competed for the first time this year - won my first title as Miss Clark County in January, then I won Miss Nevada in June, and now I’m going to Miss America in September! Since this is so new to you, what’s been the most challenging and fulfilling part of this experience? Getting used to how busy my schedule is! I don’t think I fully grasped how much work goes into this. It gives me a great respect for all the women who’ve served before me. The most fulfilling aspect is getting out and engaging with my community. You make someone’s day by talking to people and getting to know them, and I love that more than I even knew I would!

I wanted to know if Las Vegas was doing anything to combat issues similar to those we see in the news. I found the Office of Engagement Program here, which is AMAZING! I asked myself, “Why don’t we see the uproar here (in Las Vegas) that we see in other places”, and it’s because they’ve been proactive. (The officers are) building relationships and going out into the community, and letting people know that they care. They’ve gone the extra mile. I want to implement a program into high schools, with the help of our officers. We need to go into schools and educate young people on how to properly engage with police officers, shedding light on what’s legal and what isn’t. Then, they gain a greater understanding of actual policies and procedures, rather than depending on Twitter, Facebook, or rumors as their instructors. One can’t just say, “all police are bad!” because your city/state may operate very differently that another city. Additionally, the use-of-force policy varies between communities. I believe that if every city had an Office of Community Engagement, like we have here, the officers would be able to interact with their communities in a much more impactful and positive way. How did you get into the pageant competition in the first place? What inspired you to take the leap of faith? My dad was flipping through the channels last year, and we came across the Miss America pageant. He thought I should try it. I said, “Dad what are you talking about I’m an athlete - you know that.” But, I started asking my friends and they said, “you know what, Drea? You should just go for it…you have nothing to lose!”

By Lisa Marie So, I prayed about it and did some research. Once I discovered that it was a scholarship organization and had a strong pillar of community service, I was convinced it be a great opportunity. What’s your favorite family memory from childhood and now? My dad would always take me to sporting events - Lakers and Dodgers games. He was also my basketball coach growing, so we just have always been around sports. So now, that’s what I do with them. When they ask, “wanna go hang out?”, my response is usually “hey, let’s go to a game!” Do you have a beauty “secret” you’re willing to share? For an everyday look less is more! When you’re onstage, or taking pictures, I’m likely wearing more makeup than I would on a daily basis. But I don’t want girls thinking you have to walk around looking like that all day, because I certainly don’t! What about your favorite Vegas hang? I love trying new food places - I’m all about that! My favorite place to go is Hot ‘n Juicy. I was actually planning on going tonight! (laughs) I would more than likely gravitate more toward a food place than nightlife. What do you love most about Las Vegas? Vegas has so much to offer! I think we get so used to it living here, and we forget how cool our city is! I think it’s amazing that we have so many people from all around the world coming to visit and marvel at things we take for granted. The diversity that we’re accustomed to is really incredible. Before saying goodbye, Andrea extended an invitation to her “Miss America Sendoff” at her church, where she’ll be surrounded by close friends and family. I thought that invitation alone was a true testament to her character, class, and down to earth personality. The Miss Nevada scholarship organization is always looking for young women like Andrea who are inspired to make our state shine. If you’re inspired by her story, consider applying, donating, sponsorship, and/or volunteering to this not-for-profit organization. www.missnevada.org MV

A Star is Born

12

years ago, executives from Station Casinos came to see “an unheard band with a funny name” from Arizona, and offered Chris Phillips an opportunity of a lifetime. Since 2006, Zowie Bowie has been a headliner at the core of the Entertainment Capital of the World. Their high-energy shows are a favorite among locals and tourists alike, and Chris’s talent goes far beyond his voice. He is notorious for his outlandish stage presence and outfits, life of the party personality, and late night music sets, but when Chris Phillips met his now-wife Jennifer, something changed. “You go through many experiences and relationships in your life, and hope to find the one you know instinctively is the person you’d like to not only be married to, but be your best friend for the rest of your life. When you find that, it’s time to take things to the next level and create a family. Everything’s been so incredible that it’s been worth the wait. Having a child wasn’t something I was expecting, and it couldn’t have come at a better time or with a better person.” Jennifer and Chris started giggling together as they remember when she found out she was pregnant. “Chris went silent for like, 10 minutes!” Jennifer recalled as she burst out laughing. He defended himself- “I didn’t even know what I was looking at! When I realized it was ours, I insisted we run to the store and get 10 more of those sticks!” After some laughter, Chris got serious; “I’d say there was some shock, absolutely. It was a miracle I wasn’t expecting… but becomes everything in the world you never really knew you wanted, and then you can’t imagine life without it. After Ava was born, I had a realization that it’s the first time in my life I had a responsibility for someone other than myself- the reality that I brought an extension of myself into this world- it takes life to a whole other level. That’s when you understand what THAT kind of deep love is all about.” Chris and Jennifer’s relationship has a distinct rhythm… they joke alongside each other, gush about their partner’s amazing qualities, and understand the importance of compromise as new parents. As we were chatting, they were a perfect multitasking pair- they make it look easy… even when it’s not. Their 16- year son Logan is a huge help to his mom. “He helps feed her, and was secretly so excited to have a little

98

By Lisa Marie

sister- he pinches her cheeks every morning before he leaves for school but he’s a junior in high school and has his own life- I don’t want him feeling responsible when he has his own life to live”. Her husband was put to the ultimate test immediately after Ava was born: Jennifer had reconstructive foot surgery just six weeks after giving birth. She wasn’t able to walk at all- “My incredible husband did it all- would make me lunch, we moved everything close to the couch for me and he’d help with the baby all day, and then go to work.” Chris works 5 nights a week, and needs ample rest to be able to provide the kind of high-energy performance that’s required of his job- the “party atmosphere” of his show is one of the main elements that people enjoy. Jennifer respects this requirement, so their daily routine is like a perfectly executed machine. Chris sleeps in while Jennifer takes care of morning rituals. Once he wakes up, he is hands-on with Ava until he goes to work. When he comes home, they enjoy quality time together and he is on “baby duty” while Jennifer goes to sleep. Once it’s time for him to sleep, they switch the responsibility again. Of course it isn’t always easy- the biggest challenge Chris had to adjust to was adding so much extra time into his routine. “Things you do during the day become quite an operation,” he explains. “Just running a quick errand to a PostNet is no longer a 45 second drop-off when you have a baby to get out of the car seat, hold her in your arms, carry a diaper bag, have a bottle ready at all times, and wipes have become my new best friend. We’ve gone through thousands of wipes!!” But of course, “it’s worth every second, this lifealtering miracle. It makes me appreciate what I’ve been blessed to be able to do for a living- you don’t take it for granted when you have a familyit adds a whole different importance to longevity and creating revenue doing what you love. There’s an added pep in his step with his performances now, when most would be completely exhausted. “Learning to balance between being a frat-party delinquent as my character onstage for shows, and then being the most responsible person and father you can possibly be- both in the course of a day! If I don’t do one, neither would work. They feed and fuel each other.” Before saying goodbye, I asked the couple to recall their fondest memory so far with their little girl. Jennifer immediately responded with “the first time I ever looked at her. I could cry just thinking about it- she was something I never

thought I’d do again or have, and I always wanted a little girl. When Ava was born, to have her bless our lives- that moment was so special and beautiful.” Chris took a little longer to respond, but then said, “this very exact second. Looking at my wife, holding my beautiful child, making dinner together, while we are talking to you- finally speaking about something we’ve been thinking about for months and experiencing for weeks, and now we are able to assess it out of nowhereit’s so special for us to be able to do that.”. The more we spoke, the more emotional the couple got recalling the events that have taken place in just 12 months: Chris’s 50th birthday, a new home, a wedding, their first child together, surgery, and a 5 day a week headlining show. “It was a big year… with a lot of blessings.”

The most exciting news Ava Phillips had to share? She will be making her feature film debut in the movie “Bleach”- an upcoming Psychological Thriller Starring Mark Justice, Tito Ortiz, Mindy Robinson and Eric Roberts. Executive Producer, Lenka Fucikova and Co-Producer, Mark Justice say that the addition of Ava, will be the “Cherry on top” to an already extraordinary film!” “Bleach” is set to release early 2018. How to Protect Yourself Financially in Case of an Auto Accident

T

he unfortunate truth is that if you live in Las Vegas, you are likely to be involved in an automobile collision at some point in your life. So what can you do to financially protect yourself today if and when you meet that unfortunate fate? The obvious answer is auto insurance — but what type of insurance truly protects your pocketbook? LIABILITY COVERAGE: Liability coverage is what protects you when you are at fault for a collision with another party. The minimum coverage currently required in Nevada is “15/30/10” meaning $15,000 for bodily injury or death to one person in the collision, $30,000 total for all injured parties (for example, the other driver and their two passengers) and $10,000 for property damage. This requirement has been the minimum for decades but will soon increase to “25/50/20” on July 1, 2018. But if you truly want to protect yourself financially, then you should have liability coverage for as much as you can possibly afford. Many insurance companies offer policies up to “250/500/100” or more. So why should you care how much the other party receives from your insurance? For two very important reasons. First, if the insurance coverage is not sufficient, the other party could go after your personal assets to ensure they are properly compensated. Second, you cannot

102

purchase more uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage than you have in liability coverage. UNINSURED/UNDERINSURED MOTORIST COVERAGE: This is what protects you in case you are the victim of a collision caused by someone else who either does not have insurance, or does not have enough insurance to adequately compensate you. Despite being against the law, some drivers still do not carry auto insurance. Or perhaps you are involved in a hit-and-run and the at-fault driver cannot be found. Or, sometimes the at-fault party simply does not have enough coverage to compensate you for the damage they have caused, i.e. if you have $100,000 in medical bills, but they only have the minimum “15/30” limits required by the state. In these types of situations your own insurance company can and will compensate you. MED PAY: Med Pay is also known as automatic medical payments, which is exactly what it sounds like — payment made to you automatically for any injuries caused by a collision, whether you were the at-fault driver or the victim. Med Pay is paid to you without regard to what you recover from any at-fault driver, and you do not have to pay it back. Med Pay is simply extra money in your pocket!

By Dina Romaya-Ladah

UMBRELLA POLICIES: Umbrella policies provide coverage above and beyond what your auto insurance does. Many insurance companies do not offer umbrella policies, so you may have to go to another company to obtain the additional insurance. Umbrella policies can cover you into the several millions of dollars. READ THE FINE PRINT: It is very important to know exactly what coverage you are getting. Does your policy provide a rental car for you? What about coverage for towing and roadside assistance? Are you covered in case your vehicle is a total loss, but you still owe more than it was worth? You should know the answers to these questions long before you are sitting in a tow yard. Also, if you are financing or leasing your vehicle, the dealership might require that you have coverage above and beyond the state’s minimum, so always make sure to read your contracts. Attorney Dina Romaya-Ladah is a partner at Ladah Law Firm, a prestigious personal injury law firm located on 3rd Street in downtown Las Vegas that has successfully litigated numerous cases resulting in multimillion-dollar outcomes. Little Miracles and the Homes of Hope!

W

hat happens when you take 100 men from Las Vegas, on a four day journey, to make a difference for seven families in Mexico? Miracles. And that’s what happened back in May of 2017. They came together to build seven houses for seven homeless families, with grit, guts, and everything they had, and plenty of unconditional love. MyVegas Publisher, Mark Shaffer, along with 99 others from his church, The Crossing, in Southwest Las Vegas, teamed up with Youth With A Mission San Diego/Baja (YWAM) and Homes of Hope to set out on a mission to do their part in making a change in a few families lives. The mission was outlined in a simply listed 4 day plan. But, the days held something far deeper than the few words used to describe each day. The first day: One hundred men arrive in a small town just outside of Tijuana, Mexico on May 4th. “Many of them didn’t know each other

106

personally,” explains Pastor Loran Lichty, who accompanied Mark and the rest of the group. The first day was mostly traveling to the camp and setting up the game plan. Tape with their names marked on it served as makeshift name badges. They were all split into 7 groups. It wouldn’t take too long, however, for them all to get to know one another. “There were a lot of people who went for their first time doing the mission,” Pastor Loran adds. The mission was envisioned by Sean Lambert who built his first home for a family in 1991. It has since become a global movement towards providing a home to impoverished families in 21 nations worldwide. Through collaboration between YWAM and The Crossing church, people are able to give to the mission of changing family’s lives by providing adequate living conditions. The altruistic sacrifice of time and dedication for four days came quite easy to everyone.

By Angela Pacelli

Behind the physical labor, there was more than a home they were all building. There was a chance at an enhanced quality of life they were all giving to the families receiving the keys. Physical health benefits alone from living in a home made with concrete floors can reduce the risk of diseases like anemia, lung disease, parasitic infestation and so many more ailments. “Children are 47% less likely to contract lung disease on a concrete floor than having to sleep on dirt” says Pastor Loran. The preventative health benefit of having daily access to enclosed housing, running water, and electricity is immense. We also see great improvements in the mental health of people when they have the peace of mind of homeownership. Families are spared the stress of homelessness and are inclined to remain a family unit. Children are enabled to flourish in school when they know they have a home to come home to and will become young adults that can bring about change in their cities.

“The sense of security that a child has that when they go to school and have a home to go home to they do better,” adds Pastor Loran as he goes through the various benefits. The second day: Construction begins. Let’s remember, there are one hundred men who mostly really have (maybe) only said hello and wished each other peace during a Sunday gathering. Teamwork amongst these strangers brings them closer and brings about bonds that life-long friendships are made of. The excitement of everyone as the thought of building a home for a family becomes real. They prayed on the preset slab of concrete that would soon be the foundation for this families new life. Many of the families Homes of Hope helps have children. “While the adults of the family lent a hand with construction, the kids played a few feet from us. They all knew we were building them a home to live in,” remembers Mark of the first day of construction. Most of the men knew just a little about building a house, and thanks to the lead supervisors, every man was assigned a

Pastor Shane Phillip

task, and the building began. The walls went up, the roof trusses were assembled and mounted. Siding went on, the roof was finished and tar papered. Day one was complete. Evenings came with authentic cuisine and the reflection of the day that has passed. What the majority of people in the US know as standard to have a home, they’ve just seen first-hand doesn’t come standard for many in the town they’re in. Seven families will now be moved forward 7 years economically. They will now be able to focus on

things to improve themselves, rather than things of survival. The third day: The third day for this journey, was also the final day of construction. The electrical was wired, the painting began, the windows and doors installed, and the interior was finished. Most the crew stayed on site to do the finishing touches, while a few of the others break away and venture into town to the town’s Walmart for a surprise for the family. The men all pooled their money together to supply the families with all the basic necessities from furniture, linens, cleaning supplies and food. At the end of the day, there was the Key Dedication Ceremony, where all the men on each house, through a translator, dedicated a wish on the key, and prayer for the family, that his home would be a new beginning for them, filled with protection, love and security that they could call home. For the playing children and the parents that lent a hand in the construction, there was no preparing for the moment they received their keys and were able to walk into their homes with

fully furnished and supplied. It was theirs. As was the unforgettable moment of a life changing event the men from Las Vegas were blessed to be a part of and will take with them forever.

Thank you to the Delgado Cervantes family who Mark worked closely with in building their home. Thank you to all the families who welcomed everyone in being a part of this beautiful moment. We’d also like to thank Rachel, Indra and Tammy of YWAM, who helped to guide everyone at the home base in Tijuana. Thank you to all the staff and crew at YWAM for taking good care of Pastor Loran, Mark and these 99 other amazing men of the Crossing Church. And thank you to Pastor Shane Phillip, Crossing’s fearless leader, who, with hammer and nail, and chop saw too, was such a big help in making these little miracles happen. You are an inspiration to all of us! MV

The fourth day: It was time for our journey home. We live in a city known for being rich in the luxuries of entertainment, fine dining, celebrity and life lived on the grand scale. But, we are also a city rich in faith, family and caring for

one another unconditionally. There’s no doubt that Mark and all the other amazing men that participated in this mission left the little town feeling that although they presented a home to these families, they were the ones who received the ultimate blessing.

Las Vegas Rescue Mission Annual Toy Drive

A

By Perla Gumm

Las Vegas local for the 35 years, Perla Gumm has always been a pillar of the community. Even at a young age , she was always involved in something… like Palo Verde High School’s very first Senior class president! Perla has always been an advocate for the underdog, and one particular Thanksgiving dinner serving at the Las Vegas Rescue Mission, she was inspired to do even more. “It was 5 years ago, and I was participating in a friend’s canned food drive when she invited me to the Rescue Mission to serve Thanksgiving dinner. It was something I had never done before so I jumped at the opportunity.” Perla looked around and saw how many homeless children there were. She has always been a lover of children; this hit a particular chord within her. “I looked around and noticed how many children are affected by homelessness and it broke my heart. I automatically thought about Christmas and how they would be affected. After speaking to the Director of the Mission I knew exactly what I had to do.” The Las Vegas Rescue Mission holds an annual toy drive, but it’s not uncommon for the Mission to struggle collecting toys. They have a strict policy of not saying “No” to a single family, so they make sure to go the extra mile to make sure every child has a smile on their face during the holiday. It was the holiday season of 2012 that Perla first started her (now) Annual Toy Drive. Perla had been in the optometry business for 10 years at the time, and used that to her advantage. She constructed boxes and placed them in each office for a two week span. At the end of the first year she had collected a little over 200 toys. She was ecstatic. “When we got the final number I was so happy! I had only expected 100, if that. That moment really made me think, we can do this bigger and better next year.” That moment set off a firestorm in Perla. Reaching out to more people, including her patients and others in the community, the next year brought in 500 toys. And just last year, 5

110

years into her efforts, she crossed the 2,000 threshold. This has been an ongoing effort for Perla, but it has been a labor of love. “Last year when we hit 2,000 toys, it was amazing. Thinking about the children made my heart light up. Knowing that my friends, patients, and even complete strangers want to help this much is one of the best feelings in the world. This year I hope to surpass 2,000.”

Perla will be hosting her 6th Annual Toy Drive this holiday season. If you would like to participate in any way please contact Perla Gumm at the Optic Gallery Arroyo location by either stopping in, or calling her at 702-451-3937. Please drop off any unwrapped toys for ages 1-12 from December 1st-10th. The contact information is listed below: Optic Gallery Arroyo, 7290 Arroyo Crossing Pkwy Ste. 160, Las Vegas, NV 89113, 702-451-3937 www.optic gallery.com MV

A Time of Year to Be Thankful By Megan Mathis Nvseniorguide.com (702) 269-9290 mmathis4@cox.net

W

hat a relief! We have entered my favorite time of year — it’s fall, and I am falling in love once again with the outdoors and life on my patio. I think Las Vegas has such an amazing, comfortable fall season that makes it worth getting through the summer. I am again drawn to the outside world. In addition to taking long walks in the cool morning temperatures, I also look forward to baking again. Using the oven in the summer is just too brutal, so I hold off on that pleasure until the magnificent season of fall arrives. Pies, bread, cobbler and rolls are autumn delicacies that may add pounds, but I see it as pounds of pleasure. There’s no better way to appreciate this cooler, colorful season than to celebrate Thanksgiving with family and friends. Typically, there are no gifts exchanged at Thanksgiving because the emphasis is on being thankful for what we already have. In our home, we have a family tradition where we take turns around the table, each family member sharing what he or she is thankful for. This sharing time can be a bit emotional for some of us, which is powerful in and of itself because higher emotions maximize the benefits of feeling grateful. It sets the most beautiful tone before indulging in our feast. Soon we will enter the holly jolly season, and many things will change again. So, before it’s all over and 2017 is just a memory, let us savor the Thanksgiving fall season based in gratitude and be thankful for all the blessings this time of year bestows.

all in Vegas is a marvelous time of the year – triple-digit temperatures are moving toward lower average temperatures in the lower 80s in October. Cooler weather entices people to go outside and be active. One activity to include in your fall lineup of outdoor activities is walking your dog. The first week of October has been designated National Walk Your Dog Week (October 1-7). The week was founded by pet lifestyle expert Colleen Paige to increase awareness about the dangers of pet obesity and to encourage people to start walking with their dogs. There are a number of good reasons to walk your dog – the best one is that is good for you and good for them. They make the best exercise partners. It is almost impossible to resist their exuberance when they’re waiting at the door to go for a walk with you. This walking partner will never give you an excuse for not walking today. There are a number of dog parks in our area to add variety to your walking routine. If you are really adventurous there are numerous hiking trails in our area. Wishing you a marvelous fall – remember to get out and enjoy our beautiful weather and all the wonderful outdoor opportunities Vegas offers! MV

Beware of What You Feed Your Dogs

By Michelle Velez

Pet Color

O

ne of my biggest fears when it comes to my pups is the possibility of them getting into something poisonous. I’ve found many dog owners aren’t aware of the list of human foods that can be deadly for pups. Fall is the time of year for cooking and baking, so it’s important to know what dogs can and cannot have. Most people know the big ones — like chocolate — but did you know citrus seeds, stems and peels, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, and caffeine can be harmful to dogs? Another big one is the ingredient xylitol, which is used as a sweetener in many products like gum, candy, baked goods and toothpaste. In our house, the general rule is, don’t feed the dogs human foods. Having kids, however, has made it harder to follow this rule simply because kids leave trails, and the dogs know this. Because of this, we try not to keep foods in the house that can be dangerous, and if we do (I love grapes), we NEVER throw them in the trash and make sure to keep them high up on the counter. A quick Google search will help you keep it straight to make sure you protect your fur babies!

‘Who Knew’ with Chanel West Coast

By Cassie Youssef

Q A

How does it feel to be a BET Award winner, and how did you initially get your start with the Young Money team? It feels amazing and so surreal! I definitely want to win several more in the future! I initially got my start with the Young Money team in Miami. That’s where I met Lil Wayne. When he heard my “I Love Money” song, he was just quiet and vibing, but he ended up loving me and the song!

Q A

What were your favorite memories on “Ridiculousness”? Do you have any plans to work on other shows in the future? It’s too hard to say my exact favorite on the show, since we did over 200 episodes, but if I had to pick I would say the baby girl pretending to bowl, but the bowling ball was just too heavy for her to lift it and actually bowl — it was too cute. I am working on another show, but no official PR has been announced for it just yet.

Q A

Where did you get the inspiration for your mixtapes, and do you have any plans to release more in the future? We only called them mixtapes because we put them out for free, so I don’t really have any future plans for another mixtape, but the inspiration for the songs just came from life. The mixtapes weren’t a project for me but a way to release and talk about what I have gone through in life, and the music was an outlet for me.

Q A

How does your debut album differ from your mixtapes?

The music and the inspiration for the album are pretty much going to remain me, but for the album, we are definitely going to be doing a bigger push, and it will be very present on the radio.

Q A

A

Q A

Q A Q A

Q

Q A

Can you tell us more about your upcoming album? What can we expect, and when will it be released to the public? The album is set to release late summer, and will be released simultaneously with the show, the album and a single I am working on. You can definitely expect a lot more signing from me! I like to rap a lot more, but the singing just comes so much more naturally and more easily for me. What’s the story behind your famous music videos, “Karl” and “Alcoholics”? For “Karl”, I had been introduced to the famous makeup artist Joyce Bonelli, and the aesthetics that I had in mind for the music video were perfect for Joyce and myself to just share that vision together. As for “Alcoholics”, I knew I wanted to just have fun with the music video. I was introduced to Nicholaus Goossen, who is also the director of the movie “Grandma’s Boy”, and we just wanted a music video that had a sense of comedy. The scene where I’m in the shower drinking was an idea that actually came from a movie Nicolas Cage was in when he was in Vegas. We wanted to make it funny, and that’s what we did.

You’re known for your badass street chic style, and Billboard did a style diary on your Coachella looks this year. With Vegas’ Life is Beautiful festival right around the corner, what style tips do you have for those attending?

120

Dress for the weather and the atmosphere is the best advice I can give. Always where something cute, but also comfortable, and keep in mind that most of these festivals you spend walking, so wear shoes that you can actually walk in and last in. The best accessory I like to sport is sunnies! I love either rainbow ones or something super colorful and loud, so it stands out! Do you have a favorite streetwear store in Vegas?

KNYEW for sure, for their super chic street style and wear, and the store Scoop at Caesars Palace because their stuff is so cute yet so affordable.

Vegas is known for its up-and-coming artists: entertainers, fashion designers, etc. What advice can you share, given your success and your 3 million-plus Instagram followers? Just be yourself, and don’t try too hard. People can notice the fakes, but people can relate to the realness and the authenticity. I always love doing over-the-top shoots because it’s always fun to dress up, but I always stay true to myself, and that’s what’s the most important. With more and more celebrities taking up residency in Vegas, could you see yourself moving here and settling down? Maybe? I love Vegas, but I want to launch a really successful music career first. That’s my priority.

Congratulations Anthony Knight

In addition to being recognized as America’s Best Real Estate Agents by RealTrends.com, 10 Best Real Estate Agents in Nevada, 10 Best Real Estate Offices in Nevada, and 10 Best in Client Satisfaction by the American Institute of Real Estate Professionals, Anthony was a multiple award winner and top producer at Century 21, ReMax, and Keller Williams from 20092015 and recognized by the Heritage Registry of Who’s Who. In addition, Anthony was named Top 40 Under 40 by the Young Professionals Network (YPN) three consecutive years and inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016. Anthony’s knowledge of real estate and related technology has lead him to become a noted public speaker, traveling throughout the United States and teaching other Real Estate companies his innovative methods, office/team culture and community involvement. His demand and popularity has soared in 2017. Anthony has an incomparable love for animals. His passion is evident when you see him interact with his dog, Mr. Biggs. He rescued Mr. Biggs, a 3 year old “chi-weenie” from certain death when he was found badly abused and abandoned in a dumpster last August. When you see the love and gratitude between the two, the lines of who rescued whom, becomes adorably blurry. Anthony took his love for animals a step further by becoming the Chief Creator of Foster Friday, a program that helps abandoned and abused pets find loving and safe homes every Friday of each week and holds a yearly event that raises money and awareness for animals in need.
