THE CHAMPAGNE TRADITION AT WEDDINGS History: The tradition of toasting with champagne at weddings is derived from the religious ritual where the couple would drink from the same cup of wine to celebrate their union. In French culture, champagne became widely accepted as the drink of choice to celebrate unions, achievements and joyful occasions as well as previously-religious celebrations such as the christening of a ship. Current tradition: Champagne is currently traditionally consumed as part of the wedding toasts given by family and friends of the bride and groom. The champagne’s delicate yet abundant golden bubbles born from the years spent dormant in the cellars of the champagne house, are a perfect symbol of the exaltation of joy, celebrating the crafting of a perfect union. The traditional method of serving champagne at weddings is typically via the pouring of a champagne tower or waterfall. The champagne glasses (preferably coupes) are stacked in a pyramidal structure and the champagne is poured into the top glass, letting the champagne trickle down to the glasses below filling them all.

Over the past year we have shared so many incredible ideas with our loyal readers, as well as our special real weddings, styled shoots and articles by professional contributors who specialise in the industry. We have increased our print run and distribution to more stores, making it easier for all future bridal couples to get hold of our magnificent new issue, and assisting the suppliers who contribute to our publication. I was honoured to travel on a media trip to Gauteng, visiting the most outstanding venues, such as Kloofzicht and Avianto, as well as doing a food shoot and food review at the well-known Roots restaurant and venue, Forum Homini, situated in the beautiful Cradle of Humankind. We wish to thank Aleit from The Aleit Group, one of our regular contributors, for his article advising grooms how to dress for their big day, making sure they are ready for the big step. Our feature ‘From the groom’s mouth’ also provides future grooms with insight and advice. CREDITS

BRIDAL NEWS

BRIDAL NEWS KOEBANA FOR A SUN-KISSED LOOK The safe, easy way to get the beautifully bronzed celeb look is through spray-tanning with a professional product by a qualified spray-tan therapist. Koebana’s well-researched, quality ingredients are the secret to longer-lasting colour and have been trusted by brides in South Africa for over 12 years. The active ingredient, DHA (dihydroxyacetone), is a colourless sugar derivative that interacts with dead surface cells in the epidermis. The effect is temporary due to the natural exfoliation rate of the skin – and is safe, as it is harmless to the DNA in the skin. What is important is to exfoliate properly before the tan is applied. The spray is evenly applied to the entire body with no rubbing, taking special care not to over-apply on hands and feet. The blend of natural ingredients and bronzers provides an instant gratification tan, which develops into a golden-bronzed tan within 8 hours. Choose the DHA strength to suit your skin type For a longer-lasting tan, moisturise the body twice a day and take special care not to scrub, rub or exfoliate the skin. At the end of the week, when the tan is at its last, a good soak and Koebana Joba Scrub will remove any leftover product. 012 333 5744; sales@koebana.com; www.koebana.com

Issey Miyake - Nuit d’Issey - R945.00 Sharp, crisp and mysterious, the fragrance is an ode to wood. An effervescence of rich ingredients, mingled with opulence and potency. Their composition was designed to convey the idea of “adding light to the night”. Stockists: Available at selected Edgars, Red Square, Truworths, Woolworths, Foschini and Stuttafords stores.

to put their own stamp on their wedding day style. Here to inspire and excite you are five of the trendiest looks for the new wedding season. Mismatched Choose different shades of the same colour for all of the groom’s party for a smart and cohesive look, or mismatch accessories but keep the trousers and shirts the same, or choose a style and colour palette and leave the rest up to them. Bow ties Gone are the days of the shiny, silky bow ties that your mum loved to see you in. There are plenty of bow ties now in wools, flannels, tweeds and even denim! You may also want to pay attention to the style of tie that you choose, because they do all carry certain connotations. Cufflinks A pair of vintage cufflinks will add an individual touch to your look. Geometric and simple engraved cufflinks have the most timeless appeal, and you’ll find use for them on other occasions.

TOPVENDOR WEDDING AWARDS

We bring you the top 10 wedding industry vendors, who received awards at the first TopVendor Wedding Awards Ceremony held at Nooitgedacht on 20 August. We spoke to each of them and got some useful feedback for you to consider when planning your own wedding.

Best Overall Wedding Photography: Bron Fourie, Vanilla Photography Bron says you must choose a photographer whose work you love, not just whose price is most attractive. “You want to love your photos forever!” When it comes to the day, Bron is a complete romantic: “There are so many moments that melt my heart. Putting on the dress, when her dad sees her for the first time, when the groom sees his bride as she walks down the aisle, when the groom talks about his bride in his speech, the first dance, the father/daughter dance …” She advises that you relax and trust your photographer. “If you’ve invested in a photographer that knows what they’re doing, let them do what they do best.” Cell: 082 780 6997; Email: bron@vanillaphotography.co.za Website: www.vanillaphotography.co.za Best Upcoming Wedding Photography: Abby Anderson, Abby Anderson Photography Abby feels that wedding photography is such an enjoyable venture – meeting new people all the time, with each wedding being so different - and has a profound love of light, beauty and romance. “My dad says I am a ‘hopeless romantic’ – guilty as charged! I find myself drawn to the abundance of love and honest emotion in a wedding. I feel humbled to bear witness to this event, to see the intimate moments, and to capture them for you to keep forever. My style of photography lends itself to elegance, mystery, illumination and intimacy.” Email: abby@abbyanderson.co.za Website: www.abbyanderson.co.za

Best Wedding Make-up Artist: Corlé Barnard, Corlé Barnard Make-up and Hairstylist To keep a fresh look throughout the day, Corlé recommends using good primer products on face and eyes to keep everything in place. “Make sure to carry oil-free blotting sheets to take care of any shine, and ask your make-up artist for a touch-up lipstick or gloss to carry with you. “I always aim to keep my brides looking like themselves – just enhancing what they already have. My aim is to make their skin look natural, bringing out their eyes and keeping lips kissable. I want them to feel comfortable and amazing on their special day, like a princess.” Cell: 074 584 4833; Email: info@corlebarnard.co.za Website: www.corlebarnard.co.za Best Floral Detail and Design: Elmarie Bredell, El le Fleur Studio Honesty, authenticity and keeping it natural and real is what El le Fleur Studio specialises in. Elmarie has a soft spot for soft colours, soft flower petals, anything flowing and creating a soft rhythm without trying too hard. Her grandmother taught her about everything natural and flora, and had amazing crystal vases, lamps, enamel containers and glassware for arrangements. “Classical will always be the backbone to any arrangement, followed by balance and rhythm. From a classical base you can marry with minimalistic, contemporary, vintage, bold colours, anything that tickles your fancy! As long as you make sure you are being represented in anything floral as a couple.” Cell: 082 829 8739; Email: info@ellefleur.co.za; Website: www.ellefleur.co.za

Best Decor and Styling: Lizl Pieterse, Flamboijant Events, Décor, Hiring and Flowers Lizl thinks the biggest challenge for brides is to have a balance between what is trendy and what they actually like. “When implementing the latest trends, approach it as you would your clothes – add the colour or pattern in small amounts and stay with a classic theme.” She says that the colour Radiant Orchid will stay for the 2014/2015 wedding season and will expand to more shades of purple, while navy, blush, gold and rose gold are here to stay. Suspended décor and flowers have also become very popular, making it ideal for guests to see each other and to fill the void of a high ceiling. Cell: 084 799 1773; Email: flamboijant@gmail.com Website: www.flamboijant.co.za Best Wine Farm Wedding Venue: Kirsten van der Westhuizen, Hawksmoor House Kirsten describes Hawksmoor House as “perfect in our imperfections” – very authentic and unpretentious, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. “We are not only a venue but provide accommodation in 15 rooms, which allows families to come together the day before the event. We have creaky floorboards, lavender bushes, old oak trees and uniquely furnished rooms boasting an eclectic mix of antiques without being stiff and formal. There are so many areas available for the celebration, giving our clients many options. “Although we have guidelines we love creating each wedding completely individually. The vast grounds surrounding the 300-year-old Manor House afford wonderful areas for the ceremony and reception and breathtaking photographic opportunities.” Tel: 021 884 4815; Email: weddings@hawksmoor.co.za; Website: www.hawksmoor.co.za Best Stationery Designer: Lezanne Bester, Lezanne’s Designs Lezanne encourages brides to come for consultations to discuss concepts and ideas. “Once we have decided on a direction, we start to design. Clients receive a digital mockup where changes to wording, colour and style can be made. Once approved, we create a physical mock-up. “The design can be very simple or very intricate, as seen in laser-cutting, but it takes time to create a concept that works. Stationery is extremely personal to the clients. It is important to be able to separate your viewpoints from those of your clients. It is extremely rewarding seeing a client happy and in love with the beautiful work you created for them.” Cell: 082 426 6667; Email: info@lezannesdesigns.co.za Website: www.lezannesdesigns.co.za Best Scenic Wedding Photography: Carla Windt, Mooi Photography Carla’s favourite style of photography is a unique blend of vintage and a touch of avant garde modern. “Vintage photographs bring softness, charm and character, while the modern element brings a touch of the unexpected and surprise.” She has developed an approach that lets those she works with feel relaxed and at ease. “I go to a lot of trouble to get to know my families or couples before a photo shoot. I also tend to bring a bit of humour to the shoot, as laughter makes for natural and beautiful pictures. Just letting the couple or family interact and be themselves produces some of the most spectacular and special photographs.” Email: info@mooiphotography.com Website: www.mooiphotography.com Best Wedding Blog: Karen Kelly, Lovilee Lovilee.co.za is a daily blog that aims to inspire readers and empower them with DIY tutorials and articles. It has been running for just over 3 years. “From time to time we profile vendors in the industry whose work we like and products we love. The aim is always to share information or inspiration that will make a celebration easier to plan. The focus for 2015 will be on sharing more DIY step-by-step tutorials by ourselves and like-minded creatives.” For 2015 she foresees a lot of colour-burst weddings filled with floral details, and continuance of the geometric-inspired themes and monochrome. Email: kari@lovilee.co.za Website: www.lovilee.co.za Best Guest Farm Wedding Venue: Sandra Lotter, The Rose Barn The Rose Barn is a photographic playground, offering the bridal couple every possible service, from a professional team of excellent caterers with distinct style, to an in-house floristry, in-house décor rental and in-house lawn games to hire. It also offers three modern, fully equipped self-catering cottages with Percale linen, a decadent honeymoon cottage, a chic dressing room, wedding co-ordination, assistance with preferred reputable service providers, distinct Knorhoek wines and competitive beverage prices. Add to this an impressive dance floor, reputable DJ and professional waitrons – all driven by passionate owners Sandra and Cassie Lotter. FASHION | BEACH BEAUTY

The concept and design for this shoot was to remind ourselves of the unruly nature of the ocean, mixing smooth and raw textures together. The look we decided on was natural, romantic and feminine, since most brides give a description of their ideal wedding make-up containing at least one of these words. See how we pulled this whole look together.

PAGE 34

FASHION | BEACH BEAUTY

Before the shoot took place Roné from Desert Rain Photography put up a mood board on Pinterest with images of looks that she would like for the shoot. She says: “This is a preferred method of working with clients – I always ask for images or a visual description of a look they would like to achieve.“ For this natural, romantic and feminine look, creating a flawless and dewy skin was very important. Suzanne used the Temptu Airbrush makeup, rather than ordinary foundation. Temptu Airbrush make-up contains silicone and is water- and heat-resistant – perfect for an outdoor shoot. “The colour pallette I used on her eyes contained liquid eye shadows in nude, pearl, champagne and shimmery gold. I emphasised our model’s eyebrows to frame her face, and completed her eye make-up with a few subtle lashes applied to the outer corner of her eyes to elongate the eye shape and give a dreamy look. “To enhance the glowing look I applied a shimmer blush and powder to her cheekbones which would catch the light and give a lovely, soft glow to the cheeks. I also chose a nude lip and applied light gold pigment mixed with a clear gloss on top. “For our model’s hair I wanted big, soft curls that could be worn up or down. For the upstyle I created a loose, textured bun. This was achieved by using salt spray, and suited the coastal wanderer theme perfectly.” The blushing radiant skin and windswept hair with hints of gold reflecting the natural rays of the sun evoke the sense of an early-morning stroll at the seashore. Take a step back to pause and be mesmerised by nature, focusing on the treasure of colour found at the seaside – sandy hues mixed with mysterious deep blues and contrasted with white pearl. The dress evokes the image of tiny open shells being woven together, fluttering like a chime in the wind. u PAGE 36

DECOR | A BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

A team of top wedding suppliers came together to create this gorgeous, bohemian-styled shoot. The day was filled with rich reds, purples, greens and golds. Our aim was to inspire you with a relaxed vibe and rustic feel, with lots of colours and textures and gorgeousness. This is what we came up with‌.

DECOR | A BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY CREDITS Photographer: Laura Leigh www.laura-leigh.com Decor & flowers: Eco-Chic Weddings www.ecochicweddings.co.za Stationery: Pistachio Designs www.pistachiodesigns.co.za Dress: Dimity Collection, EcoBride www.ecobride.co.za Make-up: Make-up by Michelle www.make-upbymichelle.co.za Cake: All Things Nice Bakery Models: Soula and Rynhardt from Ice Model Management

The make-up by Michelle was clean and classic, giving the impression of effortlessness. Her inspiration was that it was to be light-hearted and fun. The gown, from the Dimity Collection by EcoBride, is a Chantilly lace and silk chiffon illusion dress with pleats. All of the gowns in the EcoBride collection are created from vintage or organic natural fabrics and handmade laces. The Chantilly lace used in this gown is a lace from the 1960’s which suits the bohemian theme exceptionally well. Bridal fashion is currently enjoying a pink tinge as a refreshing change to the all-white gown, which brings romance and girliness to the story. This shoot has brought together a wonderful mix of suppliers, and the decor elements and carefully selected flowers complement the EcoBride gown and groom’s attire perfectly. Pistachio Designs were hugely inspired by geometric patterns and shapes together with bold colours and touches of wood. The wood gave an earthy, natural feel, and the colours with the geometric shapes made the stationery vibrant and fun. The wedding invitation is engraved wood with a subtle printed envelope, and the wood theme is carried through to the little arrows on the menus, the table numbers and table decorations. The laser-cut words are custom-made and add a special touch. The rest of the stationery has a rich green printed colour. The inspiration for styling of the flowers and décor was the rich jewel tones so often associated with the bohemian style, rich fabrics and patterns providing a striking aesthetic. Different jewel tones are incorporated throughout the crockery and Indian ottomans and embellishments. Deep red proteas mixed with rich purple sweetpeas and soft touches of pink, all brought together with greenery, created a look of romance and grandiosity. It is also important to bring in different textures, such as wood, ceramics, fabric and flowers, to stay true to the nonconformist approach. All in all, it is all about colour, natural elements and happiness - which is what a wedding should be about!u

FLOWERS | BRIDAL BLOOMS

Spring and summer is a time to celebrate life, new beginnings and new love. Spring in itself celebrates its beauty with a spectrum of bright colours all around us in nature. Out with the old and in with the new – out with all-white weddings, and in with bright and bold colours … Bold and bright Trying to keep the style uncluttered, we have kept the flowers to their own variety per arrangement, as well as using only dark tints of colour. With the decor we have gone with silver geometrical lines in lanterns and glass or crystal votives, and a slight whimsical touch with the vintage platter. Silver provides the element of luxury while black candlesticks give a touch of drama. The main element is the tablecloth, which is bold in colour and rich in pattern. This will give your reception depth without breaking the bank. The bolder your base, the less décor that is needed to create effect. The overall feel has a hint of Persia.

PAGE 44

FLOWERS | BRIDAL BLOOMS

Monotones The palette is simplistic, clean and green – a slightly minimalistic approach to colour. There is no clutter and white porcelain. The inspiration is your mother’s beautiful Karoo garden and South Africa’s rich heritage in fynbos. Proteas, confetti bush and echeveria succulents were used, most of which came from the Karoo garden and can be found in your back yard. If time allows, start your own for use at your wedding!

Pretty in pink: Going vintage Still one of the most popular trends is vintage … although somewhat more country this year. The best part is, nothing needs to be the same! Mix and match everything from glassware and cutlery to vases and décor. The soft pink ranuculas add the finishing touch of something different, with aqua sea green decorative vases. Informal arrangements lean towards a farm feeling – the country look that so many brides strive for. It makes wedding guests feel relaxed and at home. Get creative – there are no set guidelines, and the only limit is your imagination. u

FORUM HOMINI BOUTIQUE HOTEL

WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUSAN SMIT - PUBLISHING EDITOR Recently I had the pleasure of visiting Roots. I was welcomed by friendly staff and accompanied to my suite, which had an emphasis on a “cave” feel, beautifully decorated and nestled close to the water. The reason for my visit to this magnificent, award-winning restaurant and venue situated in the Cradle of Humankind was to experience, photograph and taste their six-course dinner with wine pairing prepared by well-known chef Adriaan Maree. Being welcomed by staff in the lounge was the first step of this experience, sipping on our drink order while each couple is taken to their table. The menu is supplied and explained in detail by a highly trained host, as well as the choice of wines for the wine pairing which complements the dishes. The atmosphere was relaxed and romantic, with couples experiencing good wine, decadent food and the company of their partners. From the first dish to the dessert, it was an experience that took one from a careful selection of local ingredients to the plating of a work of art. It was also a great canvas for outstanding images. The paired wines were carefully chosen, enhancing the taste of each dish, making it an experience of a lifetime. The next morning the breakfast was yet another surprise – comprising a five-course set menu accompanied by sparkling wine and fresh fruit juice. Once again each dish was packed with different, well-chosen flavours, lots of texture and a feast of colours as well as finelooking plating.

EDITOR’S REVIEW | FOOD

Executive chef Adriaan Maree brings the wealth of experience which he has gained over the past 10 years to the table. Highlights in his career include working in London at Michelin 2-star restaurant Claude Bosi, and locally he worked at Hibiscus and also spent two years at Rust and Vrede. His cooking philosophy is light and simple: as long as it is “lekker” food, he likes it. He prefers working with an idea, incorporating flavours and tastes, rather than with a recipe. Adriaan is introducing new, monthly rotational menus at Roots. Use of seasonal products on these menus and only using the best available on the market is what he will bring into the development of dishes. He enjoys using local products, including springbok from the game estate where Roots is situated.

Oyster with marron caviar, champagne jelly and samphire

The restaurant offers calm sophistication and sumptuous luxury. It’s hard to imagine a more comfortable and welcoming environment in which to relax over breakfast, lunch or dinner, with discreet yet attentive service. This venue is most definitely a popular destination for a wedding reception as well as a romantic and magnificent honeymoon, especially for couples who enjoy good food and wine.

What to expect at roots • Contemporary, modern cuisine with a South African twist • Fresh, natural ingredients • Exciting tastes and flavours with every dish • Set menus • Course-matched wine teasers • Wine selection from top SA wine estates • Dietary requirements catered for u

DECOR | GLITZY BEACH WEDDING

When creatives get a chance to play and go a little over the top, it often results in major inspiration! We put a group of them together, and this stunning glitzy beach wedding is the result. It also proves that there are no limits to the imagination or to what you can do at your own wedding.

DECOR | GLITZY BEACH WEDDING

In this decor shoot we wanted to portray something South African, but not in a clichéd sense. Rene du Plessis, our make-up artist, had previously lived in Langebaan on the Cape West Coast, so when she started talking about her love for the area, our ideas started pouring in. We thought of traditional South African items, and then were inspired to glam them up in our glitzy beach wedding theme. A colour scheme often missed when thinking of the beach is the sparkle and the mixed metallics that naturally occur in mussel shells and fish scales, and on the waves and sand as the light from the sunset hits them. We incorporated a few lovely, typically South African elements like the black threelegged potjie pots (either dipped in gold paint or glitter!), the Basotho blankets, the bokkoms (salted cured fish native to the West Coast) and tin cups, all with just a hint of glam. Of course, shooting at Langebaan and with Paternoster as a backdrop, with its plain white architecture, turquoise waters and scattering of fishing boats, provided the perfect, most beautiful and evocative setting, with a homespun ‘glamour’ all of its own. u CREDITS Photography: Memory Box Photography www.memoryboxphotography.co.za Styling & co-ordination: Blank Canvas Event Design www.blank-canvas.co.za Venue: Boesmanland Plaaskombuis, Langebaan www.boesmanlandfarmkitchen.com Stationery: Lezanne’s Designs www.lezannesdesigns.co.za Dress: Ilze Delport Couture 074 285 8397 Suit: Jagadi Couture www.jagadi.com Flowers: Blomlief www.blomlief.co.za Cake: Edible Art Cakes www.edible-art-cakes.co.za Make-up: Ophelia Paisley Wedding Studio www.opheliapaisley.co.za Hiring & décor: Uber-chic www.uber-chic.co.za Models: Andrea Gomes & Courtney from D&A Models

STYLED SHOOT | FOREST FANTASY

With its abundance of beautiful location possibilities – from unspoilt Wild Coast beaches to the forests of Stutterheim, and Hogsback’s enchanting mountains – the Eastern Cape is a gift to the creative wedding photographer. Stephanie Norman of Shutter Memoirs Photography tells us about this woodland summerthemed bridal shoot.

STYLED SHOOT | FOREST FANTASY

The idea for this bridal shoot came from a beautiful pair of burgundy suede heels. The whimsical wedding dress from Zest Couture, with its soft tulle layers, silk bodice and intricate beading, evoked the dreamy atmosphere I was after. Armed with a bunch of fragrant blooms and delicate confections, model Madeleine and I spent a balmy afternoon in a verdant East London beach forest. The spring/summer wedding season is all about fun-filled weddings: festive flowers that make the occasion pop with beautiful colour, and the unbridled celebration that comes with the union of two people in love. My aim is always to customise my bridal shoots according to the personality of the couple, and to highlight each wedding’s individual ambiance. In this styled shoot Madeleine’s cascading locks and the romantic billowing gown took centre stage. The massive gnarled trees and soft filtered light took care of the rest. u CREDITS Photographer: Shutter Memoirs Photography www.shuttermemoirs.com Wedding dress: Zest Couture www.zestdesigns.co.za Confectionery: Sugar Dot Com www.welovesugar.com Shoes: Luella www.luella.co.za Model: Madeleine Chaput

Their wedding took place over a long weekend. On the wedding day itself the guests were driven in game-viewing vehicles to enjoy a breakfast in the bush, while Tilana relaxed and started getting ready with her only bridesmaid. Once ready, her father arranged for the lodge owner to fly Tilana, her bridesmaid and the photographer over the farm in his helicopter to land right in front of the chapel. Tilana describes a highlight of her day: “Hearing the wedding march on the electric guitar solo played by one of the band members, while approaching my husband-to-be with the sight of a baobab tree through the gigantic glass windows of the chapel.” The minister was a long-time family friend who has been involved in the general lives of Tilana’s family. The couple opened the dance floor to their favourite song by Leonard Cohen, ‘Dance me to the end of love’ – and during the dance Tilana surprised Philip by removing her wedding gown’s skirt, and remaining in a cocktail dress for the remainder of the evening. Everyone then enjoyed French champagne and meticulously planned yet very satisfying cocktail platters that were served by the waiters throughout the evening. Says Tilana: “The conventional sit-down dinner (buffet or plated) at a wedding reception is wonderful, traditional and practical. However, when there are less guests the cocktail function works extremely well, in that there is no formal seating or table placements. This encourages guests to interact, dance and feel satisfied with a delicious variety of food, without feeling too full, tired, or becoming hungry later on.” Tilana and Philip were the last two of the wedding party to go to bed, enjoying every moment until the very end. Her advice to those of you planning your own weddings is to think of your concept beforehand, and formulate an idea. “Stick to it. Do not plan your wedding too far ahead – I planned my entire wedding in less than 3 months, as I had my concept formulated in my mind long before. I had a long list of what I didn’t want and a list of what I wanted. Keep it intimate and try to spend as much time with your guests as possible.” Tilana became pregnant almost exactly 3 months after the wedding, and their daughter was born at the end of October 2014. u

Guests included Ursula’s Italian family from Italy, Nicolas’ family from France and friends from Holland, and two of the gorgeous bridesmaids came from the UK. “Our wedding brought so many of those dear to us from around the world together to celebrate the first chapter of our beautiful love story.” Ursula wore her old ballet point shoes for a vintage ballerina look during the photo session just before the ceremony, and had her new surname ‘Mrs Baravalle’ embroidered on the inside of her wedding dress. Her advice: “Love is patient and love is kind. Remember to live your life as husband and wife according to this very simple mantra and preserve the love you felt for each other on the day you first fell in love.” u

“One day we met on the street in Masiphumelele. While I had made a commitment not to date unless I found a lady that I would pursue to marry, Nelly saw me and was attracted to me ‘at first sight’. (Much later I would find out that what attracted her was my passion for God and compassion for people.) I made contact with her team and we met a couple of times, mainly over dinners which she cooked. Just before the team went back home, we traded contact details – and off they went.” They were not in touch for about one and a half years, when one day Sibusiso was supposed to Skype a friend, but he didn’t show up. “Only one person was online: the girl I had met a long time ago when she came with a team to South Africa. I thought to myself ‘Why not?’, and contacted her. Little did I know that she had been waiting for over a year for an opportunity to talk to me, but since I didn’t have regular Internet it just didn’t happen. “We Skyped for longer than an hour - and it felt right. After our second Skype date I was deeply smitten. On the third Skype date I asked her out. She still had not told me that she was attracted to me at ‘first sight’, but acted very surprised and insisted that we’d have to meet in person to get to know each other better first. “So she came to South Africa again, for about a month. We used that time to get to know each other. The day before she went back home I took her on a picnic to the Company Gardens in Cape Town. It was one of the hardest things to have to let her go back to Germany. Three months later I visited her and her family over Christmas in Germany – and after almost a whole year of being apart again, she finally moved to South Africa.” He totally surprised her with his proposal. “She knew that we were going for a paraglide with friends of mine that really wanted to meet her and love adventure just as we do. I had planned everything for a long time. The pilot was informed, my friends who came with us happened to be professional photographers who would capture every moment, and many of our closest family and friends were ready to welcome us afterwards at an engagement party. “I flew first so that I could prepare everything on the ground while she was still up in the air. I put out a big banner that said ‘Will you marry me?’ and was kneeling right next to it. The pilot pointed out the banner to her as soon as they were close enough. The reaction that followed was priceless – she could not believe what was about to happen. After landing I affirmed her for who she is and told her how she means the world to me, went back onto my knee and asked her to marry me.”

Nelly and Sibusiso had a stunning outside garden ceremony in the morning, followed by a finger food buffet with candy bar, ice cream and more. After that all 170 guests drove to Masiphumelele, where the bride was welcomed into the family of the groom with traditional dance and singing. The afternoon was filled with a stunning photo shoot at Casa Labia in Kalk Bay and Cape Point Vineyards in Noordhoek. The reception took place in the evening with just 60 close friends and family. They had over 10 nations represented – people from all over the world who came to celebrate with them, making their day even more special. Nelly has some sage advice: “Don’t have the expectation of everything going smoothly on your wedding day, because you will be disappointed. There will always be things that don’t turn out the way you planned or intended. Don’t be bothered by small or big details that turn out differently, and focus on what actually counts: you getting married! It is such a special day – embrace and enjoy it.” u

“I had never been so surprised in my life. My mother and aunt were standing in between the children. I got to share the most breathtaking moment in my life with the people and kids that I love the most!” Their wedding ceremony was not when they got legally married – they had eloped two months prior to marry on the beach of Paternoster with their parents present. It was held outside in the beautiful garden underneath a tortured willow arch. “The officiant was a good family friend, Andries Louw (our Afrikaans teacher in high school). This meant that our ceremony was very intimate and personal – even more so, since we had both written our own vows. “Things were lightened up a bit with a small practical joke played by our groomsmen. When the rings were to be exchanged we discovered that they had been replaced with golden toy rings. Eventually our best man handed the correct ones over. A heart-stopping moment! As we left for the canapés and pre-drinks, our guests tossed feathers at us.” Their guests were then treated to canapés, live music, several garden games, a photo booth and a caricature artist to give the wedding the feeling of an old-fashioned fête. “At dinner we started with some excellent food and charming toasts, followed by us opening the dance floor, having only practised one night (my husband and I had to verbally communicate what was coming up next). The rest of the night was filled with talking, dancing, dessert and cake. A truly magical evening, spent with the people that mean the most to us. “We had had to sell all our possessions a week before the wedding until we only had five suitcases left, since we moved to San Francisco a week after the wedding. A hectic time indeed!” They have some good advice for those of you planning your weddings: “Keep it simple and focus on the guests. On the night the guests will focus on you, and you’ll have the time of your life. Also, have the top tier of your cake delivered to your honeymoon suite – just or in case you didn’t get to eating after chatting with all your guests!” u

It just filled me with such happiness. And let’s not forget the party – it was one for the books and we danced the night away!” Her advice is to remember the real meaning behind a wedding day and the significance of what sharing your life with someone means. “We tend to get distracted by all the planning and forget about celebrating our love for one another. So keep calm and take each moment as it comes, and enjoy it. Make sure you have a great videographer booked – there is so much that you miss, and it is such a special way to relive your wedding day.” They tell us about their two-week honeymoon in the Seychelles on page 142. u

They were together for about 4 and a half years when they decided to take the next step and get hitched. “With me being very particular about the type of ring I wanted, we decided to design the ring together. We met with Karin from Dear Rae and she immediately knew exactly what I wanted. Due to our hectic work schedules we had set the wedding date for 17 May 2014, which left only 5 months to the wedding, so I knew the proposal would happen any time soon! “On Friday 13 December we had new couches delivered so decided to spend the evening at home with sushi and champagne. I work from home and quickly wanted to check my last emails, when Willem handed me a glass of bubbly and just stood there with a silly grin on his face. He said: ‘There’s something in your glass.’ And then I saw the most beautiful ring – covered in tons of tiny bubbles! I remember Willem being on one knee, but the actual question I completely missed!” Marlé says their wedding was a replica of their own personal style – relaxed, uncomplicated, down to earth and fun. “We wanted to stay away from a too-formal affair, and the interior of Old Mac Daddy fit our style perfectly. We decided to add touches of light yellow and pink, along with splashes of navy and gold.” They decided on a weekend wedding, because they knew that one night with their closest friends and family wasn’t going to be long enough! Says Willem of his bride: “I knew Marlé was going to look beautiful – but that feeling when I saw her walking down the aisle was indescribable! Another definite highlight was taking a swim with my dad, brothers and a couple of friends at 05h00 on the day of the wedding!” Marlé wore three yellow gold rings, each

The knight in shining armour, always making my life more blessed and easier!” The ceremony was held at St John’s School chapel, and afterwards the guests were served canapés in the cobbled courtyard at The Munro Boutique Hotel. “No one was allowed through to the dining area. We had known when the sun would set that day, so just after 6 o’clock we let the guests through to the pool/dining area. The Munro has such a spectacular view of Johannesburg – the guests’ breath was literally taken away by the beauty of the view at sunset. The reception was outdoors, and by the time dinner was served we were sitting under a sky full of stars.” Bruce and Shelley had been back to the Salsa dance school where they first met, and their bride and groom dance was a slow salsa dance to Lana Del Ray’s ‘Radio’. Their gold wedding cake made by friend Maureen took about 5 people to carry in and assemble. “It was delicious – and so pretty. All in all the day was romantic, fun and filled with family, friends, good weather and good food! Perfect!” Shelley has loads of good advice: “Always go with your first instincts, whether they indicate that the decision is right or wrong, from the venue to flowers, songs and food. Don’t sweat the small stuff; just be sure to enjoy the day.

Then came the engagement of a lifetime. “Taki took me to the top of the Acropolis in Athens. He invited his best friend Miguel and Cherry, and they came from Germany for the weekend to be with us. We walked up to the highest point, with the most breathtaking, most spectacular views – and Taki proposed to me! My knees buckled - I nearly fell off the cliff!” Taki’s promise to his yiayia (grandmother) was that when he was ready to be married, he would do so in Greece, where yiayia Asimina would be able to attend, at her current age of 94 years. Says Chantel: “On arrival we instantly fell in love with Dana Villas and their amazing views! Santorini made for a picturesque, fairy-tale wedding, and it was such a treat to share our special day with our family and close friends. “It will be an occasion to remember for the rest of our lives. A memory that will take our breath away forever. The best part for both of us was looking into each other’s eyes and saying ‘I do’.” Their advice for those of you planning your weddings is to take ‘mental pictures’ on the day. “By that we mean be present and experience everything fully, and don’t let anything distract you from being able to enjoy and treasure every moment! Forget about the wedding and all the details, and focus on the incredible journey you have ahead. That’s where the fun is! Also, acknowledge the difference between a want and a need.” u

Ryan proposed in Knysna on the afternoon of the third anniversary since they met. “Ryan said ‘Let’s go take Thandi for a walk on the beach’, and off we went. Since it was our third anniversary I wasn’t suspicious at all when he stopped on the way to grab a bottle of champagne. We went for a lovely walk on the beach as the sun was making a spectacular exit, sat down on a rock, and were sipping champagne and chatting. All of a sudden Ryan dropped down on one knee, opened up a little box, and after telling me how much he loved me asked me to marry him! It was simply perfect!” Their wedding theme was country chic because Vanessa grew up on a farm. “I was involved with the whole process and was responsible for 99% of the décor. I had a lot of things handmade, hand-painted, and sewed many of the goodies myself. A few of my amazing girlfriends also helped out.” As she arrived at the venue with her bridesmaids, the ceremony arch blew over and smashed into pieces. “Within seconds a bunch of guys and girls whipped out some cable-ties, a big hammer and nail appeared out of nowhere, and the arch was put back together within seconds. My amazing wedding planner, Victoria, was so calm and just smiled at me and said ‘We are just sorting something out. It’ll be a few seconds.’ I only found out about the chaos after the ceremony. “We had guests from the UK, Austria and Australia, and then all over SA - Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Kwazulu- Natal, Free State, etc., then obviously lots of locals from Cape Town. Our flower girl was Thandi, our dog, a beautiful mixed breed that we got from the Randburg SPCA. “Our cake was a ‘naked’ carrot cake make by one of my bridesmaids who owns a French confectionery called Ma Mere, and our cake topper was made by a dear friend, Eric Tollner from Red Earth. It was made from sterling silver especially for us and included a bicycle because of all the riding I do, and represents all the fun outdoor stuff we do. “We also had a big heart-shaped piñata filled with fun things like glow-sticks, candy and confetti. Guests had great fun hitting it and breaking it open. Ryan and I spend a lot of time in California, which has a great Mexican influence, and we both love Mexican food as well – so we had to include something Mexican! “After the ceremony we had fun lawn games like giant Jenga, croquet and corn in the hole and also a ‘harvest table’ to keep our guests’ tummies full until we returned from having photos taken. We were the last to leave our wedding, at just after 2am. We had the most amazing time with our friends.”

PAGE 121

REAL WEDDING Their advice for planning your wedding is to choose an area that you want to get married in so that you can narrow things down. “Especially in the Western Cape – there are 100s of beautiful venues down here and it can get overwhelming trying to choose one. Start planning at least 6 months in advance, stick to your budget and always remember to make room for a contingency.” Vanessa and Ryan honeymooned in Mauritius at the 5-star Dinarobin Hotel (Beachcomber Hotels) on the South West coast. “The highlight was hiking up the Le Monde Blabant, a World Heritage Site because of its role in the abolition of slavery. We also enjoyed walks, snorkelling, stand-up paddle boarding, mountain biking – and just relaxing.” u

WEDDING CAKES

The team from Wedding Concepts, part of the Concepts Collection, advises on how to make sure that your wedding cake is the showpiece that it is meant to be. www.weddingconcepts.co.za

The wedding cake is no longer ‘just dessert’ – it has become one of the showcase pieces at every wedding that guests look forward to seeing - and eating! There are as many different cake designs as there are brides, and with all of these new flavours, shapes, sizes and colours, how should couples go about choosing a great wedding cake? Here are

some of our top tips.

Photograph by Ryan Graham PAGE 128

WEDDING CAKES

Start early Planning a wedding is an involved and often rushed process. Many couples tend to only start thinking about their wedding cake a month or two before their wedding date. These days some of the best bakers’ schedules start filling up at least a year in advance. So don’t leave it to the last minute – begin your search at least 3-6 months before, or even earlier if you want one of the best!

Cake by Roxanne Floquet Photograph by Jani B Photography PAGE 129

WEDDING CAKES Choose a reputable bakery or baker Begin your research online and also ask recently married friends (and friends of friends) for their recommendations. Many of the best service providers and venues in the industry have their favourite bakers listed on their websites too, so do the research and get to know the most popular names out there.

WEDDING CAKES

Set a budget Set a budget from the very first email to prospective bakers and be open with them. It will make the process far easier and smoother for both parties.

WEDDING CAKES

Be creative Wedding cake designs and flavours have come a long way since the three-tiered white marzipancovered sponge cake! Take the time to research current cake trends online – the options are literally endless! Be inspired with flavours and go for chocolate, red velvet or carrot cake, and mix the tiers for variety. And make sure you have a tasting – it is key that the cake tastes as good as it looks! u

MAKE-UP LESSON

With the right tools and simple make-up techniques, anyone can be their own make-up artist. Whether you want to refresh your beauty routine, get a smoky eye or simply want something new, Bobbi Brown-trained Make-up Artists are ready and waiting. Just ask – they’ll show you how to look and feel your best. In a rush? Their Make-up Lessons can be tailored to the time you have available. Bobbi’s bridal beauty tips: FACE 1. Flash photography emphasises pink tones, so be sure to even out skin with a yellow-toned foundation. 2. Set concealer and foundation with Sheer Finish Loose Powder to make them longer- lasting and to ensure that skin looks matte on photos. 3. If your dress has an open neckline, be sure to ‘warm up’ your neck and chest with a dusting of Bronzing Powder. LIPS 1. Natural and pale lip colours look washed out in photos, so choose brighter shades of pink, rose and plum. 2. To make lipstick and lip gloss last longer, line and fill in lips with Lip Liner before applying colour. CHEEKS 1. For a pretty flush that lasts, use two shades of blush – a natural shade and a brighter shade applied just on the apples of the cheeks. EYES 1. Choose water-resistant eye make-up formulas, like Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner and No Smudge Mascara. 2. After applying all your eye make-up, finish with a light highlighter shade on the brow bone to make eyes pop. u

HONEYMOON | KLOOFZICHT

WORDS BY SUSAN SMIT - PUBLISHING EDITOR

It is hard to believe that a place so tranquil exists this close to the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg. Kloofzicht Lodge & Spa, a lavish 5-star lodge, is situated in the archeologically rich ‘Cradle of Humankind’, and is the essence of tranquillity and ultimate luxury, all a 30-minute drive from both Sandton and Pretoria. The serenity is embodied by water, as the lodge, comprising 60 suites, overlooks six exquisite fly-fishing dams and the lower reaches of the Blaauwbankspruit as it meanders through the unspoilt Zwartkops gorge. The dramatic scenery, natural vegetation and abundant wildlife set the mood. It features all the facilities you could want, including an excellent Spa. Allow the highly trained and experienced staff to take care of all the details to ensure a stress-free event. A fly-fishing experience of a lifetime awaits you, if so inclined. Other recreational facilities include hotair ballooning, hiking trails, game viewing and bird watching. Within close proximity are a Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve, Wonder Caves, Sterkfontein Caves, Kromdraai Goldmine, two golf courses and many other attractions. The small but magnificent nature reserve upon which Kloofzicht Lodge is built is home to giraffe, kudu, blue wildebeest, eland, red hartebeest, springbuck, gemsbok and zebra, as well as a fascinating array of bird life. From the moment I reached the higher area overlooking this magnificent lodge, I could not believe the abundance of water, wildlife and open spaces. My suite overlooked one of the dams and the Zwartkops Mountains. The moment I walked into my immaculate suite I could see the effort to create an atmosphere of calmness and serenity. A lovely romantic wooden deck offered the most beautiful view. After a long and peaceful rest I started walking on the paths, taking pictures of the surroundings. I reached the dining room, where dinner offered a choice from a carefully planned set menu. The service was outstanding, the romantic atmosphere was touchable, and I could envision this as a perfect honeymoon destination, sipping cocktails on the deck overlooking the beauty of nature. I highly recommend this lodge as a host for a magnificent wedding, with a beautiful backdrop for photography and a honeymoon of a lifetime. u Tel: 011 317 0600 Fax: 011 317 0665 Email: weddings@kloofzicht.co.za

They spent a lot of time at the Boardwalk Bar on Eden Island, where they enjoyed a number of good meals and delicious cocktails. “They also showed a lot of sport on the TV, so it was our local spot to watch the rugby! We hired a car for 2 days and drove around to different areas on the island, where we found a number of quaint beachside restaurants. This was really a highlight of our trip, finding new little spots to eat, drink and enjoy the sun!” They also went on a boat trip to visit a number of the smaller islands around Mahé. “It was a wonderful day out where we snorkelled, saw giant tortoises and had a delicious braai on the beach. So – what did they learn about each other on their honeymoon? “We learnt to relax and enjoy spending quality time with each other. In today’s rushed lifestyle, quality time is very rare and is something to be treasured. So we always try to make time in the year to take small trips away, just to be able to connect and spend time alone together.” u

From the lodge there are walks of varying degrees of difficulty, on marked paths through the indigenous forest. With crispy leaf litter underfoot, dappled light filtering through star chestnut trees and an array of birds calling and flitting past, the walks are delightful. Early one morning a klipspringer and I stare at one another until he suddenly bolts. The experience has such a surreal quality that I wonder if I have imagined the encounter. When you are ready for activities, you can visit the local village for a cultural tour where you are welcomed by scores of enthusiastic children with broad smiles and shouts of joy. This is an authentic experience that gives you a glimpse into the traditions and rituals of local Malawian people, and you support community projects initiated by Pumulani. Equipment for kayaking, sailing and waterskiing is available. To scuba dive and for the best snorkelling to see the famed cichlids of Lake Malawi, a motorboat ride to nearby Cape Maclear takes you past gigantic boulders and fishing villages. If you want to learn to scuba dive, these calm, clear waters are perfect. Patrick of Dive Centre, Cape Maclear, is a PADI-certified instructor with a reputation for excellence. Using new equipment you will see literally hundreds of species of cichlids and freshwater blue crabs, and dive on sites close to Thumbi, Domwe or Mumbo Islands. Snorkelling is also richly rewarding, with a mesmerising amount of fish species in the region. In the local Chichewa language, Pumulani means ‘rest well’. You can certainly do so here, in the secluded and beautiful environs of this lodge, the only one situated in Lake Malawi National Park. u Robin Pope Safaris, a member of Classic Camps of Africa, has excellent lodges in Malawi.
