OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high-quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.
o you remember when you sent your first email and you thought how cool it was, but you didn’t really understand why people were making such a big deal about this internet thing? Maybe it was just me. Well the experts are now making similar predictions about 3D printing, and our cover story takes a close look at the impact this groundbreaking technology will have on our lives – it’s much more than being able to create your own chess pieces. Also this week we cruise down the rapids of the Grand Canyon, meet a Montville man who has overcome a troubled childhood to become an ultra-marathon runner and a trainer to the stars, and test drive Ford’s new Kuga. (Where do manufacturer’s get their names? The closest I can come to a definition is that it is the Serbo-Croatian word for plague). There’s plenty of property, including one of the funkiest houses on the planet. Enjoy.

QUICK CHAT
A NATURAL ATTRACTION Mukti is the founder of Maleny-based company Mukti Organic Skincare, stocked Australia-wide and exported to five countries. After two years living in Bali, Mukti has returned home with a renewed sense of appreciation for the Sunshine Coast’s pristine natural environment. FIRST JOB?
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
A clinical assistant in a naturopathic clinic in Brisbane. It started my journey on the health and wellness path.
I’d move Maleny closer to the beach! It would be great to have a venue like the Brisbane Powerhouse up here, somewhere where there’s more international events, not necessarily big events, but more cultural, with a funky vibe that caters for the 35 to 65 year-old bracket. It would be great to have something like that, where you could go to an interesting event three or four nights a week.
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES… Me and my two daughters Kiyana and Aysha.
FIRST CAR? A Hyundai van, which I used to travel up and down the coast in. I was living in northern New South Wales and I had a mattress in the back and used to go out on the road and to various beaches and park the van. It appealed to my sense of freedom.
WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST?
FAVOURITE BOOK ?
Peregian, Noosa, Kondalilla Falls and Mary Cairncross.
One of the books I often return to would be the Power of Now. It’s about being mindful. At the moment I’m on a personal growth quest and more inclined to read books that are assisting me to look at myself. How I can improve myself through my thoughts, words actions and deeds.
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? My dad encouraged me to learn touch typing and I’m very grateful that I can touch type, because I look at all the two-fingered typists and I think, why isn’t it mandatory in the school system now? On another level, I was told the most important thing we’re here to learn is to love ourselves, not in a selfish or narcissistic way, but once you have that inner love for yourself, everything else can flow out from there.
FAVOURITE SONG ? House is my favourite style of music at the moment. I’m not really into soppy love songs.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? Twenty years. In 1995 I moved from Brisbane to Crystal Waters Permaculture Village at Conondale, originally because I wanted to have my baby in the country and have a more sustainable, healthy lifestyle. Now I live in Maleny, where my business is based.
WHY HAVE YOU STAYED LIVING HERE? There’s a great sense of community in Maleny – it’s very supportive. It’s a beautiful place to live, very pristine and clean and quiet, but the lack of stimulation is challenging at times for me. I spent the last two years living in Ubud, Bali and ran the business virtually. It was a nice hiatus. I was able to really ground myself in my work without being caught up in the day to day running of the business. I loved the freedom and the simplicity of life there.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? What I really appreciate about the Sunshine Coast compared to anywhere else in the world are the beaches. They’re magnificent – the cleanliness, the lack of pollution, the expansiveness, the choice of all the beautiful beaches we have on the coast. My favourite spot would be Noosa, especially Little Cove. I love the National Park there. I feel alive and invigorated if I’m near the ocean. I’d like to get into paddleboarding and being closer to the water to soothe my soul. I really missed our beaches when I was in Bali. I didn’t like going to the beach there, it’s very polluted.
CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT? Starting my business was a big turning point. I always wanted to have my own financial independence.
YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? I’m lying in the sunshine or anywhere in nature, being outdoors, barefoot on the grass, feeling the sand.
WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST? Lack of environmental awareness and overconsumption. Things that aren’t made to last; this cycle of cheaply manufactured things that don’t have longevity. They break on the day the warranty ends. It’s this constant cycle of making people continue to have to consume.

COVER STORY
printing was going to be as big a change, but in the last two years I’ve become quite convinced it is as big a change as manufacturing has ever gone through. You may be able to produce something that’s half-wood, half-metal, or halfplastic, half-glass. You can do bizarre combinations that were previously impossible. You could print a wooden table with steel printed into the grain.” With much of our manufacturing having moved offshore to more competitive markets, Powell says 3D printing could rekindle Australia’s manufacturing industry. “It would benefit us because we are so geographically isolated, so it could potentially bring manufacturing back into Australia, which I’d like to see. I think Australia has everything necessary to stand out.” It’s a sentiment strongly echoed by Brisbane researcher James Novak, who in May won one of the world’s highest accolades in 3D printing, the 2015 Dick Aubin Distinguished Paper Award, presented at the RAPID conference in Los Angeles. A Griffith University academic, Novak won the award for a bicycle frame he printed in plastic resin for his Honours thesis. It took about 150 hours modelling in CAD software and months of testing to perfect. Within five years, he says, 3D printers will have advanced to the stage where they could print bicycle frames customised to a person’s body size and shape in titanium or carbon fibre for around $5000. Novak is now completing a PhD in Industrial Design, looking at how to embed smart thinking into 3D printed products. This would allow them to design and generate themselves, thus removing the need for the technically-challenged to understand CAD software and making 3D printing more user-friendly. “Our advantage in Australia is that we’re one of the largest miners of titanium,” says Novak. “The problem is we then ship it off to other countries. If we could use our own materials and print our
myweeklypreview.com.au
13.indd 1
own products in Australia, that would be fantastic. The CSIRO just got five or six million to develop their 3D printing program. The private sector really needs to jump on board. “At the moment we can’t manufacture anything. Holden, Ford, Toyota, all these companies are shutting down. We could really lead the world in 3D printing if we wanted to. We have the skill when it comes to thinking about design and creating and manufacturing. There’s no reason why we couldn’t jump on board with manufacturing in a big way, and be price competitive with the rest of the world.” Australia is producing highly skilled 3D printing professionals like Novak, who are graduating from university and heading straight to jobs in the US and the UK. Meanwhile, our government and the private sector are lagging behind in their adoption of the technology. “Having been to LA and seen how much investment is being made overseas, the honest answer is we’re quite far behind,” says Novak. “Our Asian neighbours are investing in putting printers in every primary and high school. Barack Obama has been passionately supportive of 3D printing and getting it into schools and manufacturing. If we could do that with our government and combine it with students and manufacturers who take a leap of faith, we could really jump ahead of the rest of the world.” Novak says 3D printing is a technological revolution on the scale of the internet, in that it will transform the world of manufacturing. “Companies like Airbus are jumping on board – you may have already flown on an aircraft with 3D printed parts on it,” he says. “NASA has spacecraft going into space that are using 3D printing. You know when the big guys are using it, it’s a big deal.” Industrial 3D printing is now at a tipping point. Companies like General Electric, Ford, Boeing, Google, eBay, Nike and IBM are now using 3D printing in
breaks, you can jump on their website, print out the part and repair it yourself. The sky’s the limit; there’s not a lot that won’t be 3D printed in the very near future. You can have a 3D scan of your face and print it in chocolate and send it as a present. “Give it ten years and the technology will be really advanced and be commonplace in the kitchen, backyard, workplace. Once everyone realises it’s actually here, it’s not some future Star Wars technology. We might start to get a whole lot more designers like myself designing 3D products that will take off in ways that we can’t even imagine yet.”
Julie and Isaac Powell’s 3D printers groundbreaking ways. According to Forbes, the three most common reasons companies are pursuing 3D printing are prototyping (24.5 per cent), product development (16.1 per cent) and innovation (11.1 per cent). Just as many of us found it difficult to get our heads around using the internet for anything beyond email in its infancy, both Powell and Novak say the human imagination, at both the domestic and industry level, hasn’t yet caught up with 3D printing’s potential. Says Powell: “The biggest question most 3D printer owners have is: I have this thing that can produce anything, what can I make? The hand was a little glimpse of what was possible and people took off with it. There are multitudes of those things that will take off when people realise what they can do, especially when new materials come along. I think it will keep jumping ahead like that.” “We’re only just starting to have these conversations about what 3D printing is in the general community,” says Novak. “The technology is changing very rapidly. One of the big ones for people at home will be repair of electrical appliances and white goods. A lot of those companies will start putting their catalogue of products online for download, so if a little washer
FAST FACTS 3D printing (or additive manufacturing, AM) is any of a number of processes used to make a three-dimensional object. Successive layers of material are laid down under computer control, creating objects of almost any shape or geometry. The virtual design is made in a CAD (computer-aided design) file using a 3D modelling program, or by using a 3D scanner to copy an existing object. • According to Wohlers Report 2014, the worldwide 3D printing industry is expected to grow from US$3.07 billion in revenue in 2013 to US$12.8 billion by 2018, and exceed US$21 billion in worldwide revenue by 2020. • Siemens predicts that 3D printing will become 50 per cent cheaper and up to 400 per cent faster in the next five years. • The automotive industry’s adoption of 3D printing is projected to increase from US$365.4 million in 2015 to US$1.8 billion in 2023. BEAUTY TOOL ESSENTIALS
Eyeshadow shades for everyone
Revamp your beauty bag by investing in gadgets you’ll use every day. Grab a new set of tweezers and manicure kit, sharpener, a body brush, eyelash curler, makeup brushes and a hairbrush. A few of our picks? Mason Pearson’s Pocket Bristle & Nylon Mix brush, $125, from selected pharmacies. Revlon Diamond Collection Lash Curler, $16.95, from Priceline and pharmacies. Tweezerman Mini Slant tweezer, $19.95. Call 1800 251 215 for local stockists.
Choosing an eyeshadow colour that works for your eyes is easy. Here’s how: Brown – brown eyes go with any colour, so for an understated look, choose a bronze or pinky tone. Make a statement with teal or purple. Blue – slates and silvery blues look great against blue eyes. If you have light blue eyes, don’t overdo it as your eyes will shine on their own. For deep blue eyes try a rich eggplant shade. Green – go for a reddish undertone if you have green eyes, but for a bold statement choose a plum or purple. Hazel – plums and purples will highlight the green in hazel eyes, but if you want to play up the brown, choose greys and earthy browns.
Rose loves rosehip p Rose Byrne always has flawless skin, which, according to popsugar.com.au, is due to a good SPF-tinted moisturiser and rosehip oil. She’s not the only fan of the oil, which is full of essential fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants to repair and revitalise skin. If you haven’t yet invested in a bottle, we like Kosmea Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil, $12.95 for 10ml, and Sukin Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil, $17.95 for 25ml, from pharmacies and health food stores.

r Chris Reynolds is the founder of Dr Wheatgrass, a brand of natural skin recovery applications used to assist in skin recovery and repair, which contains a wheatgrass extract that Reynolds has used in clinical trials and on thousands of patients since 1995. The Dr Wheatgrass five-product range features a gel, creams, spray and herbal supplement Supershot. “The benefits of wheatgrass are largely biological, not nutritional as most purveyors of wheatgrass in its various forms would have you believe,” Reynolds says. “Instead, there are many bioactives in wheatgrass that help to ‘normalise’ damaged tissue. It also has whole body effects by strengthening one’s immune system, which is essential for maintaining good health.” Dr Wheatgrass’s key ingredient, wheatgrass extract, is produced in South-East Queensland from naturally grown, young, vital wheatgrass sprouts at the height of their biological activity. The next venture for Dr Wheatgrass is the production of a new, highly effective topical spray for relieving the pain of burns, preventing infection and assisting burn recovery. It is so safe it can even be used for oral burns. He says that after spending two decades practicing orthodox medicine, wheatgrass provided a natural therapeutic answer to a number of conditions for which there were no pharmaceuticals available, such as burns and soft tissue injuries. Naturopath Jodi Chapman asks, to supplement or not?
S
ometimes with all your best efforts, being well just doesn’t go to plan, leaving you with a decision about whether or not to seek advice and support. Over many years of seeing patients with a vast array of conditions, some mild, some lifelong debilitating diseases, the path that has brought each patient to that point has been varied. I recently read an article about practitioners using supplements to treat patients, compared to the power of a positive mindset alone to restore health. This is something I commonly discuss with patients about to embark on their wellness journey. For some people, difficult emotional situations can cause stress, depression, or debilitating disease. For others, ill health is triggered for no apparent reason.
In both cases, emotional stress will cause the body to use more nutrients to enable the person to cope. When gut inflammation is involved, and in most cases it is, nutrients that are found to be deficient are B12, B6, folic acid, vitamin D, DHEA hormone, and a range of minerals. Inflammation will lead to nutritional deficiency due to lack of absorption. Techniques to reduce stress as well as a positive mindset will not fill deficiencies, though are very important in breaking the cycle. A combination of both a positive mindset and nutritional replenishment will always give a more effective and speedy recovery, and is most often essential to restore wellness. Find out more at advancedwellness.com.au.

TRAVEL
INTO THE WILD
A whitewater rafting tour of the Grand Canyon is the ultimate bucket list adventure. WORDS: Abi Jackson
T
his time last week, I was at my office desk. Now, deep inside the Grand Canyon, on the banks of the Colorado River, miles from civilisation, I’m lying under the stars. It’s night three of my seven-day adventure with Grand Canyon Whitewater, who offer guided rafting trips ideal for completely inexperienced adventurers like me. Their rafts are motorised, which means there’s no paddling involved, and their articulated design makes them particularly adept at negotiating the rapids. Incredibly, their Mary Poppins-bagstyle bellies somehow also manage to carry enough grub to keep us very well fed for the week – we feast on fajitas, steaks and chilli – cots for all of us, plentiful drinking water, first-aid kits and ‘Oscar’, the chemical toilet. There are 25 others in my group. A few days earlier, we had assembled outside Marble Canyon Lodge, a roadside motel in a remote corner of the northern Arizona Desert, giddy with nervous excitement and clutching our rucksacks. Ranging in age from 13 to 80-something, we are students, teachers, office workers, a marine biologist and even a brain surgeon. But this week, none of that really matters. We are equally-ranked teammates, and we’ve spent the past two days arm-to-arm on rafts for about seven hours a day, squealing together as we crash through rapids, working together to unload/load supplies and set up camp.
North Rim Grand Canyon Cape Royal This isn’t the sort of trip you book lightly. It’s a long-dreamed-of cross off that bucket list option, the marker of a major milestone – an important birthday, to celebrate surviving an illness, or a fresh start after divorce. However, the moment we’d set off from our river starting point, Lees Ferry, all those things had started to drift from our minds. There were other things to concentrate on, like not falling off the raft, and keeping our eyes peeled for bobcats and desert bighorn sheep (there are rattlesnakes but they’re seldom seen). Each day follows a similar pattern: a couple of hours on the river, hit the shore somewhere for lunch and a hike, and then back on the raft until we find a spot to set up camp.
There are plenty of rapids too, ranging from fun teasers to full-on, heart-in-your-mouth grade nine to 10 monsters. Hermit and Zoroaster are two of my favourites, but the biggest, Lava, comes on the last full day. Talk of this bubbling beast, and how it fills even the bravest captains with dread, thrills us all week. For me though, the height of my fear hits on day six. We pull up for a hike where we’re promised we’ll be rewarded with the most beautiful natural oasis. Getting there, however, involves a bit of a trek through a narrow gorge, with a 12-metre drop. I’m not good with heights but there’s no way I’m missing out, so off I traipse, merrily clambering up winding rocky paths until we enter the gorge. The ledge then narrows for about
%AN 10T0 LI A R AUS MADE
two metres, with overhanging rock about chest-height, which means I’ll have to traverse, leaning outwards over that steep drop. I’m petrified. Every cell in my body screams that this is a terrible idea. I’m clumsy enough on three-metre wide footpaths. I make it – and yes, the oasis around the next corner is spectacular – but all I can think about is the fact I have to tackle that ledge again on the way back. Lava is so ferocious, its roar echoes through the canyon for miles. When we get near, we pull up on the banks and the guides hop out to do a reconnaissance, leaving us alone, wondering whether they’re just pulling our legs. But they’re not. And despite the fact we’re now, of course, old hands at this outdoor survival malarkey (real beds and hot water – who needs those?), when we finally begin our approach, we are filled with excited terror again. We’re a bunch of regular Joes whose lives are suddenly entirely in the hands of Mother Nature and some pretty awesome river guides – and it feels amazing. – The writer was a guest of the Arizona Tourist Board. PROFILE
BORN TO RUN
I
f you’d walked a mile in Jamie Milne’s shoes, you’d probably have very sore feet. But you’d also have an understanding of what drives the ultra marathon runner, who rose from a troubled childhood in New Zealand to become a personal trainer to elite athletes and royalty, break a world record, write a book and raise $55,000 for charity. The Montville athlete’s feats of endurance include running from Cairns to Townsville (322 kilometres) plus the length of Scotland and the length of New Zealand – twice. In January, he broke the current world record for the largest distance covered with burpee broad jumps, completing 4126 jumps over 8.5 kilometres in 22 hours. Each challenge he has undertaken has raised thousands of dollars for charity as part of Miles for Mary, a pledge he made when his grandmother Mary died, a loving woman who played a pivotal role in his upbringing. “I was a bit of a ratbag when I was younger,” he says. “I grew up in a really rough community. My mum left when I was three months old and my dad raised me till I was 13. I became a bit of a statistic. I had a rough upbringing and was one of those people that got bumped around a bit. “My grandmother had a large role in my morals and values. I ran amok in my teenage years, but I was lucky enough to get into the navy when I was 16. Had it not been for my grandmother and the navy, I would have been destined for prison. Now as a 36-year-old man, I’m not ashamed of it.
“So the whole charitable streak is my way of trying to do some good for a bit of a misspent youth.” When Mary died in 1999 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Milne vowed to create a lasting memory of her by completing an annual charity endurance event in her name. During his seven years in the Royal New Zealand Navy, Milne discovered his passion for fitness. He went on to study sports psychology and in 2013, spent a year as a personal trainer to the Kuwait Royal Family. “It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life,” says Milne. “I trained a couple of sheikhs and their nephews. Some of them had never been to a supermarket before. If you said go away and eat chicken salads and broccoli and steak, they didn’t have the capacity to sort it out for themselves because they’d had chefs and nannies.” Milne came to the Coast in 2010 to stay with friends while he wrote his book, 12 Weeks to an Ultra Marathon, and loved it so much, he decided to make it his home. Six months ago he moved to Montville with his partner and two children. As a professional strength and conditioning coach, he trains a number of high profile clients on the Coast, but in keeping with his charitable nature, Milne has launched a free running and fitness club every Saturday and Sunday morning at Kondalilla Falls for all fitness levels. “It’s purely hinterland focused, with the intention of getting this amazing community active, healthy and

positive going forward in 2015,” says Milne. “It will be not-for-profit, as this will be my contribution to the area. “I’m a great believer in that the more you put out there, the more you get back. I grew up in and out of boxing gyms in New Zealand and I don’t think I paid a cent. I may as well share the love.” Milne is now gearing up for his 2015 Miles for Mary challenge – his toughest yet. In November, he’ll attempt to run the circumference of Tasmania (1100 kilometres) solo, carrying a 10-kilo backpack to raise money for Ronald McDonald House, Hobart. “These endurance things test your mind, test your body, test your spirit,” he says. “It goes to show you that a kid who was probably destined for not a lot has gone out and had a go at something challenging. As I’ve said to my teenage son, you should have a goal so big you feel uncomfortable telling people about it. Don’t set your goals small. Life should be daunting – when you challenge yourself, it’s food for the soul.”

EVENT FUNDING WORKSHOP
STILL BOPPING ALONG
The Manfreds are heading to Australia for their 50th anniversary tour.
I
t is one of the catchiest number one worldwide hits to ever grace the airways and next month fans will once again have the chance to bop along to Do Wah Diddy. UK group The Manfreds are hitting our shores for their 50th anniversary tour – their first Australian tour since 2008. They’ve come a long way since January 1965 when the new R&B band, Manfred Mann, first arrived in Australia for the Big Show tour. The hit song all the kids paid their
money to hear from The Manfreds was of course Do Wah Diddy. The group went on to have numerous pop hits which were R&Bbased with an undercurrent of jazz. Between 1964 and 1968 Manfred Mann scored three British number one hits, a number one hit in America and six top 10 singles in Australia. During this time, the band featured singers Paul Jones and Mike d’Abo. But, by 1968 they had broken up with keyboard player Manfred Mann, going on to form Manfred Mann’s Earthband
and Paul Jones, Mike d’Abo, Tom McGuinness, and Mike Hugg all going on to enjoy successful and varied solo careers as song writers and artists. In 1991 Jones, D’Abo, Hugg and McGuinness reformed as The Manfreds, enlisting the talents of Marcus Cliffe, Simon Currie and Rob Townsend.
The Manfreds will perform at The Events Centre in Caloundra on Sunday, July 19. Tickets are priced from $67.50. Visit theeventscentre.com.au.

MAUREEN’S WINTER WARMING TIPS Winter is upon us, when we shelve our cool cottons to await blue skies and balmy days. Just a few seasonal interior changes can transform our homes into the inviting space we crave. Here are some tips: • Begin by texturing and layering with beautiful textiles. Replace matching sheet sets with quirky ensembles of colour. Base sheets in creamy ecrus and toasty taupes, layered with top sheets of seasonal colour in raspberry, mulberry and grapevine greens. Drape overfilled eiderdowns across the foot of the bed and finish with soft throws in bold hues. • Faux fur throws add visual warmth at

a glance, with their plush depth and contrasting colours and textures. Keep the theme running, rolling out rugs, angled under beds and sprawling throughout living rooms. Try cowhide or Turkish tapestries. Add soft-focus lighting, moody lamps with textured organic shades and earthy bases. Cluster with candles. Huddle organic baskets of seagrass and driftwood or tempered copper urns filled to the brim with in winter tones and textures. Allow the elements in with tangled twisted branches, braided with ivy and placed across a coffee table or resting gently against a wall.

*Sessions are limited. The styling sessions are available the second Friday of each month from 9am to 5pm and bookings are essential. The result is a Kuga that, in some ways, might even rival the new Territory for buyer appeal. Having not driven Ford’s mid-sized SUV before, we were pleasantly surprised by how agreeable the Kuga was with its well-weighted blend of space, flexibility and round-town versatility. Its sharp entry-level pricing of $27,490 has no doubt been a factor in the Kuga’s popularity, and Ford is keen to keep the momentum rolling, shaving a further $500 off the price while adding some generous new features in this

updated model. An important addition is the availability of an automatic transmission on the entry-level Ambiante frontwheel-drive version (previously only available with manual shift). But the big improvement is with the arrival of a two-litre, turbo-charged EcoBoost four-cylinder petrol engine for higher-spec variants, giving the Kuga a serious leg-up in this competitive market segment. With a punchy 178kW and 345Nm, the new engine turns the Kuga into a

surprisingly spritely thing with the company’s marketing campaign claiming a 30 per cent power advantage over its rival Toyota RAV4. The diesel option has also received an upgrade but it’s the force-fed petrol engine that is likely to drive future sales. We tested the mid-range Trend model ($36,490 plus onroads) featuring the EcoBoost powerplant, six-speed auto transmission and permanent all-wheeldrive. It truly sits perfectly in the middle of the Kuga family, the cheapest version

ord’s mid-size Kuga has been something of a super sub for the embattled manufacturer. While waiting for the updated version of its ground-breaking Territory to come online, Ford has enjoyed a somewhat surprising sales success with the smaller Kuga over the past couple of years. So now that the revamped Territory has hit the market, the Kuga was probably in need of a cheer-up itself. That arrived recently in the form of some upgraded engines and sharpened pricing.

costs $10-grand less and the dearest Titanium is $10-grand more. We were particularly impressed by the Kuga’s sturdy, flat ride and handling and its athletic driving characteristics which belied its high-riding stance. That’s no doubt a product of its European heritage - the Kuga is built in Germany and shares many of its underpinnings with the Focus hatchback. The Kuga’s very long dash and large, raking windscreen creates an extremely open, airy feel to the cabin and probably makes the car feel larger than it actually is. All-round visibility is excellent, perhaps the best of any SUV-style vehicle we’ve driven recently. The only downside to all this glass might come during summer, although we didn’t find the car particularly hot during our test. The Kuga’s cockpit is nicely equipped, particularly for the money although it takes a bit of working out where all the buttons and controls are placed. No matter, though, because Ford’s clever SYNC cockpit management system which encourages the driver to use voice control rather than poking away at buttons is another impressive
touch for a vehicle in this price bracket. It’s pleasingly simple to use and the commands are very intuitive. The lack of satellite navigation in the mid-ranked Trend model we tested probably drops the Kuga behind class rivals like the Mazda CX5, Nissan X-Trail and Subaru Forester. The other drawback is the small size of the screen - a fairly puny 4.2 inches for the centrally-mounted display. Beyond that, the interior is nicely presented with clear instruments and a useful, comprehensive trip computer featuring tyre pressure monitors and a digital speed readout as well as the usual fuel-efficiency measures. Official consumption of the two-litre
EcoBoost engine is 8.8L/100km identical to the thirst of the smaller 1.5-litre turbo engine offered on the entry-level models. The two-litre diesel is the most frugal at 5.5L/100km. Our week-long test in the Kuga delivered fuel-efficiency nudging the teens, 12.5L/100km according to the trip computer although admittedly most of our driving was in urban conditions. Equipment levels are reasonably generous even the cheapest Kuga enjoys rear parking sensors, SYNC voice control, cruise-control with speed limiter and heated electric mirrors, as well as push-button start and front and rear foglights. Stepping up to our test model, the Trend, adds 18-inch alloys, dual-zone climate control, auto headlights and wipers plus power-adjusted seats. The flagship Titanium gets even bigger (19-inch) alloys, leather trim, sunroof and a clever hands-free tailgate that opens with a swipe of your foot if you’re carrying items from the shops.
FORD KUGA TREND HOW BIG? It’s officially in the compact SUV class, which pits it against rivals like Mazda’s CX-5, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Pathfinder and Subaru Forester. But its clever cabin design makes it feel bigger than most. HOW FAST? The addition of a smart two-litre, turbo-charged four-cylinder engine makes the Kuga easily the bestperformed option in this class. It’s impressively zippy and fun to drive. HOW THIRSTY? Officially its thirst is 8.8L/100km. There’s a smaller petrol-engine option which has the same thirst, or a diesel that is much more frugal. HOW MUCH? The Kuga can be had for as little as $27,490 but our test model was much better-equipped with a pricetag of $36,490.

WHERE ART MEETS MOTORING BMW is celebrating 40 years of its ‘rolling sculpture’ art cars with a global exhibition.
F
orty years after its first ‘rolling sculptures’ were unveiled by BMW, the company is celebrating the anniversary with a rolling global exhibition of the 17 vehicles. The concept for BMW Art Cars was the brainchild of French racing driver and art enthusiast Hervé Poulain who asked sculptor Alexander Calder to apply his creative talents to his race car in 1975. It became an instant crowd favourite on the race track and since then, new additions to the BMW Art Car Collection have been made over the years. The unique works of art have been created by some of the biggest names in the art world, including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney and Jeff Koons. Several cars are usually on display at the BMW Museum in Munich, the home of the BMW Art Cars, as part of its permanent collection. The remaining vehicles are travelling the globe. BMW spokesperson Maximilian Schöberl says the art cars provide an exciting landmark at the interface where cars, technology, design, art and motor sport meet. “The 40-year history of our ‘rolling sculptures’ is as unique as the artists who created them.” The anniversary campaign can be tracked at the hashtag #BMWArtCar.

hen German race car driver Mike Rockenfeller was looking to build a new villa for his family in Switzerland, he turned to Californiabased architect Sebastian Knorr’s tecARCHITECTURE. Rockenfeller, who has won at Le Mans and Daytona, was looking for a home with a guest house, spa and fitness facilities, which would make the most of its lakefront location. Knorr and associates delivered an eco-friendly building that connects the interior with the outdoors. The home’s
20-metre glass front frames the view of the lake, and connects to a courtyard with a mirrored back wall that reflects the water view again. The upper level, where the bedrooms are housed, features an open master suite that also drinks in views of the lake. B&B Italia furniture, Flos lights and customdesigned pieces plus the flower pattern facade create a unique space brimming with personality. While the passive design, geothermal heat pump system and highly insulated walls mean the occupants are comfortable year round.

SURF REPORT
with MWP’s man in the water
Well the Fiji Pro is expecting a nice push into the weekend so could be six to 10 ft! Will be great viewing, can’t wait. Well the Indo season is starting to tick along. Picture six foot waves with not a drop of water out of place, peeling off for 100 metres…( big sigh). SNAP…back to reality, sadly the devil women is back with onshore conditions. Nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. Almost time to replace my old wetsuit which is falling apart. It appears my warming technique may have played a part in its decline! Seemed like a good idea at the time! :)
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Quality bream are moving in on the rising tides at both Maroochy and Mooloolah Bars with pilly pieces, mullet strips and prawns the best bait. Chopper tailor can be found around the entrance to Maroochy River. Luderick are showing up around pylons of the motorway bridge (second pylon). SURF: Conditions this week have allowed tailor and dart to come in close to Pincushion and along Marcoola Beach and north to Coolum. Check out the gutters at low tide and return on the run in tide. You can get sea bream at Alexandra Headland using mullet fillet strips. The best time is dusk. OFFSHORE: The Barwon Banks are firing for snapper, pearlies and parrot with plastics, squid and pillies delivering the best results. The close in reefs of Murphy’s and the Gneerings are producing good quality but searching for them is a must. Large squid are being caught using squid jigs of mixed colours around the northern side of Old Woman Island just as dawn breaks. FRESHWATER: Somerset has been steady for bass and golden perch using live shrimps in the warmest part of the day, at about five to 10 ft deep. Baroon Pocket Dam is producing good sized winter bass, but once again in the warmest time of the day.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] The new moon’s in Gemini, and you have much to learn from your zodiac neighbour. Like being more flexible. It’s a wonderful week to take stock of your current financial situation and find novel ways to boost cash flow. The more proactive you are, the better.
GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] With the sun, moon, Mercury and Mars all in Gemini, the world will get a quadruple-dose of your quick-witted quips this week. Just make sure your playful chatter doesn’t denigrate into gossip. It’s the best time of the year to refresh your physical appearance.
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] You’re keen to retreat into your cosy crab cave as the new moon moves through your contemplation zone. Solo activities like yoga, meditation, reading and journal writing are favoured. Saturn urges you to review your peer group.
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Lions love talking about grandiose goals, divine dreams and spectacular schemes. Now’s the time to walk your talk, as you put those plans into productive action. Don’t just dream about it – get out there and do it! Networking is also favoured.
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Virgos are certainly clever and capable. The question is – are you confident enough for big time success? The new moon’s charging up your career zone, but you won’t get ahead if you waste time making massive mountains out of tiny molehills.
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Money matters are on your mind. With thrifty Saturn back in your money zone, avoid buying things on credit – stick to cash. The more disciplined and frugal you are with your finances, the better the outcome will be. Don’t expect any overnight miracles though!
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Saturn reverses back into your sign, until September 18. Problems you encountered when Saturn was last in Scorpio are likely to resurface again. Lust and loot loom large, as you work through issues involving intimacy or shared resources.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Under the blessings of the new moon, it’s the best week of the year to start a romance, propose, get married, renew your wedding vows, reboot a rickety relationship or launch a joint venture. Attached archers – talk through potential problems with your spouse.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] This week’s new moon encourages you to adjust your home/work ratio so that it’s more balanced. Saturn reverses into your hopes and wishes zone, so a cherished dream may seem to be stalled. Have faith that your dreams will take flight when the time is right.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] The new moon urges you to build bridges with a child or teenager, initiate a friendship, start a challenging sport, or take up a hobby you’ve always been interested in. Peace-maker Venus encourages you to patch up a lingering problem with a loved one.
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] With the new moon, Mercury and Mars all highlighting your domestic zone, it’s a fabulous time to entertain at home with an impromptu Piscean meal. Convivial conversation is a bonus. Being of service to others also brings much joy and satisfaction.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] You relish your independence and freedom but don’t be a lone ram this week! The new moon encourages you to find fresh ways to connect with others in your neighbourhood. You’ll also have plenty of fun fraternising with family and friends.

THE LAST WORD
LIFE IN THE SLOW LANE Don’t let life pass you by while you’re busy doing other things, writes Richard O’Leary.
W
hen someone asks how you are going do you answer “busy”? Or do you reply with one of the many variations on that theme… snowed under, flat out, or under the pump? It seems we’re all attempting this time defying act, trying to fit more into each day despite them still coming in 24-hour blocks. Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard summed it up pretty well: “Of all ridiculous things, the most ridiculous seems to me, to be busy — to be a man who is brisk about his food and his work.” It’s no coincidence he was writing about the greatest sources of unhappiness. I’ve taken this to heart in recent times and have tried to slow down. Doing less in my spare time, and trying to stay in the moment. Walking has been one of the best ways to do that. I go down to Ewen
Maddock Dam with my dog Truman and walk through the forest. Most of the time we are on our own, although occasionally we’ll see a young couple on the trails, or cyclists, and on the rare occasion, some horse riders. But mostly it’s just me and Truman, walking at the pace we were born to
“Walking allows you to take it all in rather than watch it flash past” travel. You notice so much more when you are taking a stroll compared to when you are pedalling a bike or driving a car. Walking allows you to take it all in rather than watch it flash past.
Swiss writer Robert Walser talked about this in his celebrated short story The Walk. “With the utmost love and attention the man who walks must study and observe every smallest living thing, be it a child, a dog, a fly, a butterfly, a sparrow, a worm, a flower, a man, a house, a tree, a hedge, a snail, a mouse, a cloud, a hill, a leaf, or no more than a poor discarded scrap of paper on which, perhaps, a dear good child at school has written his first clumsy letters.” How much do we miss because we are in such a damn hurry? And it’s not just when we are walking. What about all those times when we are so busy at home, work, or when we are out and about that we deprive ourselves of those special little moments? I’m off for a walk, see you next week. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
