OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high-quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.

f all the boys’ clubs that still exist, sports reporting is one of the most enduring and resistant to change. While some women have broken through over the years – being part of Channel Nine’s State of Origin coverage has always proven to be a bridge too far. That was until the Sunshine Coast’s Yvonne Sampson rewrote the rules. In this week’s cover story, we meet the reporter from Palmwoods and find out how she broke down the barriers and what’s in store for her future. Also this week, we have a quick chat with the head of the Coast’s Business Council, Sandy Zubrinich, meet a local copper who has gone undercover to write a crime novel, and seek some seclusion at a hotel in Spain that is truly one of a kind. For those of you wondering what to do with the kids over the next few weeks, we have the perfect solution with a six-page holiday fun guide, and as always, there’s plenty of property.

QUICK CHAT

FAMILY BUSINESS Chair of the Sunshine Coast Business Council, Sandy Zubrinich, teaches her grandchildren to always leave something on the table for someone else. FIRST JOB?

to a coast. Sunshine Coast has all the attributes I look for: close to hinterland and beaches, village environment, blue sky, clean air, great walking and exploring, easy to move around and is close to my family in Brisbane.

Reception and administration at a local hospital in country South Australia.

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . My daughter Tatia, son-in-law David and young grandchildren Kaija and Dane, as well as our combined pack of poodles, Merlot, Moet and Misty.

WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST?

FIRST CAR? My first and second car were both Datsuns. Both met unfortunate ends and taught me valuable but painful driving lessons. IMAGE: CARLYLOOYAH.COM.AU

WHAT ARE YOU READING? Shining, the story of a young refugee boy who eventually makes it to Australia. The second is the latest Baldacci book.

FAVOURITE SONG? Anything I can sing with my grandchildren.

IS THERE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN?

When I decided to leave the country and turn a job into a career. It was confronting, but I never looked back.

I am at peace with myself, which was patchy as a young woman but much more so now and particularly when my family are settled and happy.

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST?

Don’t believe your own publicity – told to me when I was quite senior in banking and probably intended to bring me down a peg or two. Always leave something on the table for someone else – my maternal grandfather’s advice and something I instilled into my daughter and now my grandkids. I think greed is abhorrent and something I am always conscious of.

Ignorance.

IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING WHAT WOULD IT BE? Don’t waste time on things that don’t really matter and make the most of your talents and skills. Look for ways you can make a difference. Don’t waste your life.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? Seven very nice years.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? I am not big on having favourite anything really. I like locations for what they uniquely offer. Each Sunshine Coast village offers a different atmosphere, yet the same peace, beauty, nature, friendly people – the lot really.

They usually get the complete tour: south to north and inland. Always a trip through the hinterland stopping somewhere nice for a meal. Maleny, Montville and Eumundi are always on the agenda for South Australian friends because of the similarity to the Adelaide Hills. I also promote our surf clubs for meals if there are kids involved.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I am uncomfortable with the polarisation that can emerge in regard to issues around development and progress in general. I would like to see more informed discussion, debate and leadership around growth, change and development, and resolving how we can maintain a healthy economy that will ably support the Sunshine Coast preferred lifestyle and our valuable natural assets. We need all three to be healthy, but not at the expense of any one.

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE?

TEA OR COFFEE AND HOW DO YOU HAVE IT?

With the exception of Chicago, which has lakes, I have always lived on or very close

Green tea or flat white coffee – no sugar. Either will do.

Local Bed Retailer Will Give Away Over One Million Dollars In Discounts On His Entire Inventory Between 25th June & 30th June Because He Has A Tax Problem And Wants You To Be The Beneficiary Instead Of The Australian Tax Office My business has had a great year so far in 2015. In fact, we’ve done so well I’m probably going to pay double the tax I did last year. And the way it works in the retail trade is the most stock you have on hand, the more tax you pay. Herein lies my problem You see, without considering the tax consequences I just bought in a whole truckload of stock and I must get rid of it to avoid being hit with a huge bill from the ATO. So my accountant’s told me to hold a massive clearance sale to get rid of my stock before the June 30 deadline. At up to 67% off all stock, I know I’m practically throwing away quality merchandise. I don’t care. I have to get rid of them.

COVER STORY

LEAGUE’S LEADING LADY Yvonne Sampson is reporting from the sidelines again during the State of Origin – after becoming the first female journalist to do so. It’s the kind of thing she dreamed of as a kid growing up on a farm near Palmwoods. She’s a rugby league-loving Maroon to the core, just don’t call her one of the boys. WORDS: Tamara Simoneau

John Steffensen, Ken Sutcliffe and Yvonne Sampson present Wide World of Sports

T

here is nothing typical about Yvonne Sampson. One minute we are chatting about a designer dress she scored for half price, and the next, she’s recalling the best thing that’s happened to her since she started out in the maledominated world of TV sports reporting. “My first day (at Channel Nine Brisbane), I walked in and they said, ‘This is your desk’ and Wally Lewis turned around and said, ‘Hi, I’m Wally.’ I’m sitting next to Wally Lewis! That was the happiest moment of my career so far.” Her career ‘so far’, has been the kind that many aspire to but few achieve. At 26, she scored her first job

14 My Weekly Preview | June 26, 2015

14.indd 1

on the anchor desk at Seven Local News on the Sunshine Coast, after several years freelancing around regional Queensland as a sports reporter for the network. In 2010, she moved to Sydney to start a job with Sky Sport. Within weeks, a Channel Nine executive was calling, but Sampson had just signed a two-year contract. “He said, ‘Righto, I am going to call you two years from now’, and to his credit, two years later to the day he called me and asked me if I wanted to go back home (to Queensland),” says Sampson. That’s where she joined Wally Lewis and former

Wallabies Captain Andrew Slack in Nine’s Brisbane newsroom. “A lot of people say, ‘Oh, you cracked the boys club’, but I never wanted to be part of the boys club. With Wally and Slackie, we became our own little club. I just wanted to be me, and stand beside them as a colleague. “They’ve both become very dear friends, I am happy to say. They’ve become almost like father figures to me as well.” League legend, Wally Lewis, gets a laugh out of that one. “It’s nice to see that she believes I’m old enough to be a father figure – c’mon Vonnie, I’m only 55!” myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY

But it’s clear he’s one of her biggest fans. “When she came into the place, she had that shy look on her face, which is unusual for Vonnie. She’s been a pleasure to work with for everyone here at Nine. “The thing that impressed everybody about her was that no matter what sort of mood everyone else was in, she was always in a bright and smiley mood,” says Lewis. “Her will to win and how she strives to achieve is fantastic.” That drive to succeed was evident early on. During her university days, the avid horse rider juggled a job at the Eagle Farm Equine hospital with her journalism studies at QUT. “I’d leave uni at three in the afternoon, then go work at the vet until midnight and then drive up the Bruce Highway home,” says Sampson. In January last year, Sampson was lured back to Sydney again to work more extensively with Nine’s Wide World of Sports. She reports from the sidelines on NRL broadcasts and this past summer, Nine put her on the hosting panel for its cricket coverage. She also appears on The Footy Show and was the first female to join the network’s State of Origin coverage, cementing herself as one of the most versatile talents in TV sports at the age of 34. “When I was really little I wanted to be the girl who rode Buck the Bronco around. So I’m still on the sideline, but in a slightly different capacity.”

“When they offered me my job at Nine, my words were, ‘I don’t want to be on the broadcast because I’m a female, I want to be on it because I’m the best person for the job’” Sampson’s burly colleagues know that when that little red ON AIR light flashes, they’re on her turf. “In live TV, anything can happen and sometimes you have a panel full of footballers staring at you with a scared look in their eyes and they’re relying on you to get them to the ad break cleanly or get them out of a tricky situation. We all rely on each other, because they are well out of their comfort zones.” And despite the fact that she’s constantly surrounded

myweeklypreview.com.au

15.indd 1

Sampson was a member of the Australian dressage team by men, Sampson is right at home. “I don’t think the players react any differently to me because I’m female. I don’t think my gender has ever been an issue. “I would never want to be the token (female). Actually, when they offered me my job at Nine, my words where, ‘I don’t want to be on the broadcast because I’m a female, I want to be on it because I’m the best person for the job,” she says. One of the most common misconceptions she fends off is that she’s inundated with requests for dates from players. “I don’t get asked out. I have never had that offer. Plus, I’m older than them all now so that’s good,” she jokes. But her growing profile collided head-on with her laid-back, down-to-earth persona in 2013. While off duty and watching a cricket match with friends, she was caught on camera amidst an animated conversation that included a sexual gesture. It hurled her into the

headlines. The video has 5.7 million views and counting on YouTube. “It’s still horrifying, but it’s quite funny. You don’t think when you go to the cricket with some friends that you will end up a YouTube sensation. I was actually telling a story about when I was at local news. But it was a really good learning curve on how quickly something could come from nothing. I certainly keep my hands to myself when I’m watching sport these days,” she laughs. Bubbly by nature, she clearly hasn’t let the viral saga get her down, even though it followed her around the world. On a recent holiday in San Fransisco, ‘that’ video was a hot topic. “We stayed at an Airbnb (an online accommodation rental service) and the guy waited all of five minutes before he said, ‘I’ve already seen you on YouTube.’” When she’s not watching sports or reporting on it, Sampson gets back to her rural roots as often as possible. Growing up on a farm in Palmwoods, she was a member of the Australian dressage team as a teen. “I’m happiest when I’m on the back of a horse.” She’s happily dating a fellow TV reporter, but the love of her life is her gelding, Caleb. An old friend takes care of him for her on his sheep farm five hours from Sydney and she makes the trek to see him whenever she gets a break from her hectic day job. “When things calm down a little bit, I can go back to showing. I’d love to compete,” she says, noting that there’s no great rush as the oldest athlete to compete at the London 2012 Olympics was a 71-year-old dressage competitor from Japan. And somewhere in this glass-ceiling-smashing life she’s living, she’d love to have a family of her own, too. “Hopefully I can strike a balance. I don’t know if you can have it all. I’d like to do this for as long as I can.”

DIG DEEP FOR RED NOSE DAY June 26 is Red Nose Day, the major fundraiser for SIDS and Kids. Funds raised through Red Nose Day activities assist SIDS and Kids to provide vital services and programs to the Australian community. The charity is dedicated to saving the lives of babies and children during pregnancy, birth, infancy and childhood and to supporting bereaved families. Visit rednoseday.com.au.

ONE IN FOUR people in Australia will experience anxiety – making it the most common mental condition in the country. The Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service is now offering a series of workshops to help people manage the symptoms. The Managing Anxiety Workshops will be held in Caloundra from July 10, and will start in Noosa on August 7.

REVIEW RIP JAMES ACKERMAN The Sunshine Coast sporting community is in mourning following the death of James Ackerman. The 25 year-old rugby league player suffered a head injury during a Queensland Cup game in Brisbane on the weekend. He was admitted to intensive care, but later died. The Ackerman family released a short statement through the QRL.“James loved the game of rugby league, he always played the game with his heart on his sleeve. We will miss you.”

HOODOO GURUS TO PLAY FESTIVAL The second round of artists for this year’s Caloundra Music Festival has been announced with Hoodoo Gurus, Baby Animals and Ben Lee added to the line-up. Festival Director Richie Eyles says: “These three fantastic Australian acts combined will provide a feast of hits that we have all grown up enjoying.”

15% GST

Nambour based senator James McGrath has called for a new tax system which increases and expands the GST, but lowers income tax. McGrath describes Australia’s tax system as old-fashioned. “We should follow the lead of our Kiwi cousins: broaden the GST to everything and increase its rate to 15 per cent. Accompanying income tax cuts and increased income support for pensioners and others can more than cover concerns about equity for low income earners.”

COUNCIL’S LOWEST RATE RISE IN YEARS

S

unshine Coast homeowners have been given their lowest bottom line rate rise in years, with the council imposing a 2.7 per cent increase (including a three per cent rise in general rates) in its 2015–2016 budget. The majority of ratepayers will pay the minimum general rate of $1110 per annum. Waste collection charges will rise, with a standard 240-litre wheelie bin increasing by $6.90 per annum. The garden waste bin charge has been reduced from $70 to $60 per annum, and people will now be able to dispose of unwanted mattresses and non-degassed fridges for free. The council will also give money back to ratepayers in the form of a carbon tax rebate of about $17 in July rates notices. The early bird and pensioner discounts and the transport, environment and heritage levies are unchanged – the Tourism and Major Events Levy has risen by 10 per cent and will affect 10 per cent of ratepayers. Mayor Mark Jamieson says after taking all the changes into account, the majority of ratepayers would receive an increase of $1.65 on their July rate notice compared to the same period last year – the overall annual increase will be $37.30 after discounts. “The $588 million budget gets the balance right between delivering core responsibilities and implementing a visionary direction to shape the region’s future. “There is no other council in Australia delivering

such game-changing projects such as the Sunshine Coast Solar Farm and the SunCentral Maroochydore City Centre – the only greenfield CBD in the nation at this time – which will significantly benefit future generations. “Council is investing $32 million to begin works at SunCentral Maroochydore City Centre, which will create 10,000 jobs over the life of the project. “And while game-changing projects are important, at the very core of this budget is a focus on delivering

“Our ongoing environmental work will continue with an allocation of $74 million to protect our greatest assets – our beaches, our bushland and our way of life. “There’s $58 million to maintain, renew and replace council’s many parks and gardens and sporting facilities, and more than $34 million for libraries, galleries and community facilities. “Community programs and events will be allocated more than $6 million, placing a premium on arts and sports and giving a helping hand to our groups, associations and clubs who help others.”

“There is no other council in Australia delivering such game-changing projects…” infrastructure and services to cater for our growing population. “To achieve this, council has allocated $98 million to maintain, renew and replace roads, pathways and stormwater. “There’s also more than $40 million for economic initiatives including major events, airports and holiday parks and to help businesses already here, and attract new ones.

MAJOR INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS IN 2015-16 • $11.9 million for Evans St, Maroochydore upgrade (plus $7.8 million in 2016-17) • $3.2 million for Sunshine Coast Aerospace Precinct • $2.7 million for Caloundra streetscaping – Bulcock St and surrounds (plus $5.8 million over 10 years) • $2.6 million for Minyama to Mooloolaba cycleway • $2.4 million for Sippy Creek animal pound (a total of $4.6 million over two years) • $2.3 million to upgrade North Arm-Yandina Creek Rd, North Arm (a total of $3.2 million over two years • $1.4 million to replace Eumundi Range Rd, Eumundi bridge • $1.2 million for Goshawk Blvd, Sippy Downs (link between Stringybark and Power Rds) • $1.2 million for Glenview Rd realignment and rehabilitation

PROFILE

FROM COP TO CRIME WRITER A local police officer takes on the cutthroat world of publishing. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw

I

n a small town a couple of hours west of the Sunshine Coast, a madman is kidnapping women to hunt them for sport – but his latest prey isn’t like the others. Sammi is a police officer and refuses to be his victim. Will she escape the dreadful fate in store for her if captured by the killer? You’ll have to read the book to find out. A Time to Run has all the elements of a bestselling crime thriller, but with one difference: its author is a female police officer with an intimate knowledge of her subject matter. Sunshine Coast writer J.M. Peace is a serving member of the Queensland Police Service who drew on 15 years as a cop to construct what has been described as a gritty, authentic crime novel with a distinctly Australian voice. J.M. Peace, also known as Jay, uses a pseudonym to protect her identity, as she’s uncertain what ramifications she could face at work once the book is published. While the story is fictional, it’s heavily influenced by her day job. “The characters are often an amalgamation of people I know and some of the situations I describe are based on my experience,” she says. “I’ve never been in any really bad situations as a police officer but there’s so often the potential for it and afterwards, you think, it could have ended so badly.” Peace says she populated her book with strong female characters as a counterpoint to the boy’s club culture of the police force.

$

“I don’t think the police culture is as apparent from the outside. When you’re actually a part of it, you’re privy to a whole other scene and that’s what I’ve attempted to give readers a little insight into.” She says the protagonist is based on a “younger and better looking version” of herself. “It goes back to many years ago. I spent some time backpacking and I used to hitchhike, which was not a wise thing to do at all. This was at the same time as Ivan Milat was taking backpackers out to the Belanglo State Forest. I often thought, what would I have done if I got into the wrong person’s car at the wrong time? So that was the seed of the story. “When I became a police officer, I thought I would have an extra edge. As a police officer, you’re put in a lot of stressful situations and you’ve got no choice but to hold it together and not to panic.” With its secluded Australian bushland setting, A Time to Run echoes the film Wolf Creek, but don’t run screaming from the bookstore just yet. “It’s not as gruesome as Wolf Creek,” Peace days. “But it is meant to be creepy. There is a bit of violence in it; there has to be to raise the stakes for the victim, but there’s no torture. There’s a couple of murders – you can’t write a crime novel without a couple of murders.” Peace wrote the book at night while her children slept, hoping she had the makings of a new career that would enable to her to leave the police force.

“Everything changed after I had children,” she says. “I wasn’t interested in the things that drew me to the police service in the first place – the adventure and never knowing what you’d come across in the course of a shift. I really enjoyed it until I had children and wanted to do my eight hours and go home in one piece. Peace has already written the sequel to her first book and secured a second publishing deal with Pan Macmillan. She’s now writing the third book in the series and crossing her fingers her hard work pays off. “It’s been exciting but it’s always tempered with a bit of anxiety about what’s going to happen when it comes out,” she says. “I hope it’s a roaring success and I can leave my job as a police officer. I’m nervous because I’m certain someone is going to recognise me. No criminals are coming to get me; I’m not worried about that. It’s more the police hierarchy and if anybody believes I’ve stepped over any lines.” A Time to Run will be published on July 1.

MY OPINION

TILL DIVORCE US DO PART

STICKING TO THE PLAN

Sami Muirhead is staying in the good books with her hubby after reading the latest divorce statistics.

I

was extra nice to my husband the past week after stumbling across a sobering report about divorce. Instead of attacking him Ninja style when I found dirty clothing left all around the house, I simply smiled sweetly. He is no doubt wondering if I have gone mad. If you asked me to guess what the Sunshine Coast is number one at in the country, I would say we have the best beaches, the highest number of toned and tanned stomachs, and quite possibly bragging rights to owning the highest number of Havaianas per person. OK, I made that last part up. But you must admit, we are all obsessed with those expensive thongs. Well, it turns out we are champions when it comes to the number of us getting divorces. The small town of Glenwood, just up the road from Gympie, is Queensland’s divorce capital, with one in six residents deciding life is better solo. Coming in to take the bronze medal in the state is Kings Beach. Caloundra also makes the top ten list for the highest rate of divorce in Queensland. Whilst one in three marriages in Australia ends in divorce, they are lasting longer than two decades ago. 1n 1993, the average length of marriages that ended in divorce was 10.7 years; today they are lasting 12.1 years on average. The research also shows women most commonly hit 40 and think life is not how they thought it would be

and want a divorce. Men, however, tend to wait until the last child is out of the house or want a life change after a health scare or a school reunion. Divorce terrifies me. My parents split up when I was very young and it was really traumatic. Thirty-five years later, my parents still do no talk and spit venom towards each other. I do not know how they once upon a time actually liked each other and then went on to have three children. I guess at some stage they restrained from abusing each other long enough to say “I do”, but they are sworn enemies to this day and it makes family birthday parties and other milestones almost impossible to celebrate for fear of World War 3 breaking out. I know divorce is the best option for many people and in too many cases, the only option if one partner is abusing the other. I have a stack of friends who have taken the brave plunge of starting life solo after being married a long time. I also know it can be the best option for the kids and it can be done with class and no hostility. But those cases seem to be as rare as seeing a photo of Kim Kardashian that does not have her booty in the shot. And I also know I will no longer be taking my husband to Kings Beach for fish and chips. At least, not until I hit my 50s. For more from Sami go to twomadrabbits.com or you can hear her on Mix FM.

CARPORTS

A 50 per cent increase in our population over the next 16 years is hardly anti-growth, writes Keryn Jones.

I

t is a shame ‘anti-progress’ accusations about the Sunshine Coast community are being tossed around again. Obviously, people whose amenity or property values are impacted by a development are likely to protest – that is not unique to the Sunshine Coast. Similarly, airports never get developed anywhere without huge controversy. In reality, the Sunshine Coast has been a high growth area for a long time and Sunny Coasters are not selfish utopists who want nothing to change. Rather, as decades of surveys and consultations have shown, the vast majority of us want to develop in a balanced and responsible manner that protects the assets we all love. Progress is development towards an improved condition. Whether the people support particular developments depends on what they view as an improved condition, and whether this improvement is worth the other impacts. It is obvious that every development project will create at least short-term financial gains and jobs. Project proponents generally consider only this economic bottom line, making it near impossible for them to see the downsides to any project. The business community representatives, at least in their public statements, focus exclusively on economic benefits. It’d be easy if the money and jobs angle was all we had to worry about, but getting the balance right is not that

simple. The mistakes of the past, here and elsewhere, have shown us that we need to give equal weight to the environmental and social bottom lines to ensure the economic benefits don’t end up creating other problems. Sometimes, those environmental or social bottom lines will trump the economic one. That is balance. After years of robust consultation with the community, including business and the development industry, the council weighed up community values and used expert knowledge to assess our natural assets. The resultant Town Plan aims to protect what we must for the long-term future, while stimulating economic activity and providing certainty to residents and developers about what projects can and will happen – and where. The Plan accommodates a 50 per cent increase in population; about 150,000 people over the next 16 years. That’s hardly ‘antigrowth’. Not everyone likes the plan, and some tweaking may be necessary, but it is the agreed compromise that sets out what the people of the Sunshine Coast want for our region. It is a document that represents good governance. As such, the plan, and those who defend it when major alterations are proposed, should be respected. MY BODY

Here are three celeb beauty trends we’re liking from recent red carpets:

TIP Next time you squeeze yourself a fresh orange juice, keep a couple of teaspoons of juice and mix it with one and a half to two tablespoons of bicarb for a quick DIY face mask. Leave it on the skin for 20 minutes then wash off. Your skin will be exfoliated thanks to the bicarb and brighter thanks to the vitamin c hit.

Fringe benefits Thinking of getting a fringe for winter? If you’ve never had a fringe before, or haven’t had one since primary school, remember you’re making a bit of a commitment. Unless you have very well-behaved tresses, you’ll probably have to wet and blow dry it into place every morning. And you’ll want to visit your stylist every few weeks for a trim (most stylists will do this for free). Before heading to the hairdresser for the big chop, take in some photos of fringes that you like but remember, different fringes will frame your face in different ways.

1. Candy pink lipstick. Scarlett Johansson has been rocking this look a lot of late. Channel her with the Body Shop’s Colour Crush Shine Lipstick, $19.95, in Raspberry Blush. 2. Liquid liner on the top lids only. Try Revlon’s ColorStay liquid liner, $25.95, in blackest black. 3. Full eyebrows. If yours are a little thin, plump them up with an eyebrow liner such as Clinique’s Superfine Liner for Brows, $32.

Winter warmers Here e are some must-have cool c weather products to get you through the months ahead. LIP BALM Made from natural ingredients, Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm, $6.95, moisturises, soothes and protects. From Priceline and selected pharmacies.

FACE OIL Try Moreish Liquid Gold Argan Oil, $29.9 which is $29.99, rich in fatty acids and vitamin E to re revitalise and pr protect. From Priceline.

SPARKLY NAIL LISH POLISH Add some colour kle to and sparkle your winterr look ’s DS with OPI’s BRONZER 9.95. Bold, $19.95. Try the Napoleon Perdis Mosaic er and From Myer Bronzing Powder, $60, for a alons. selected salons. subtle sun-kissed look.

MY LIFE

EMBRACE HOLISTIC HEALTH

THE TIME IS NOW

Y

ou only need to take a walk along your local beach on a Saturday morning to realise that being fit and healthy is becoming a priority for many locals. After manoeuvring around the women jogging in pairs and the men counting their push-ups, you enter your favourite café – where the girls next to you are busy styling Insta pics of their healthy brekkies. According to beautydirectory.com.au, one of the biggest health trends of this year isn’t actually a single trend, but rather it’s about people taking a holistic approach to health and wellbeing. Many of us are realising that a single supplement or exercise regime won’t cover every health need and as such we’re approaching our health more fully, looking at diet, exercise, supplements and stress reduction. We are assessing our food more, looking at how it is processed, where it comes from and what nutrients it can give us. “Wellbeing is a state of being healthy and happy and has become a status symbol in modern society,” says Blackmores PR manager Amy Wagner. “While we can’t all get rich and live in the coolest suburb or have the flashiest car, we can all get healthy – or at least try. The phenomenon starts with food, nutrition, and exercise but is actually an all-encompassing lifestyle.”

EASY DOES IT When kicking off your fitness regime, be kind to yourself, and be realistic. If you normally crawl out of bed at 7am, don’t set your alarm for 5am. Instead, have your exercise gear ready and set your alarm for 6.30am. Build up from 20 minutes of exercise to half an hour and then an hour.

Naturopath Jodi Chapman says the key to happiness is living in the present.

C

hinese philosopher Lao Tzu said, “If you are depressed you are living in the past. If you are anxious you are living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the present.” This quote often catches my attention, reminding me to focus on what’s happening around me. With our busy lives, scheduling in time for work, exercise, family, play, and always thinking ahead, even just five minutes ahead, we risk missing the meaningful moments – connecting, feeling, and creating history and memories that last forever. In other words, we miss out on happiness. The journey is the goal, and that goal will always move and change, most often before you get there. So savour the journey. Do this by getting up early and watching the sun rise – it’s

spectacular. Respect your body, eat well and exercise, as health and happiness are amazing rewards. Get lost in your training. Get outside, get moving, absorb your surrounds, run, cycle, paddle, walk or swim in the ocean. Make the focus about where you are, appreciate the beauty rather than rushing through the process. Get lost in a hug. Hugging for up to 20 seconds releases the hormone oxytocin, the bonding hormone, which boosts love, trust, and happiness. Get lost in a kiss. Stay in the moment, feel the connection, fall in love for the first time, or all over again. Be grateful for what you have, and then you cannot live in the past. Make a new and beautiful future by being present. Find out more at advancedwellness.com.au

THAT SUCKS! Robot vacuum cleaners aren’t new to the market and they continue to maintain a steady popularity among Australian consumers. Samsung’s PowerBot VR9000 is a little pricey compared to competitors but reports indicate that unlike some of the other gadgets on the market, it performs well. The vacuum cleaner is compact, which means it’s easy to stow away. It also packs a punch in terms of power and efficiency. Features include battery power, navigation by remote control, cleaning schedule and silent, regular or max cleaning modes. The Samsung PowerBot VR9000 retails for $1499. Visit samsung.com.au.

Frequent flyers will love the LoungeBuddy app. It’s a great guide to more than 2000 lounges across 600 airports globally and helps users choose the perfect lounge. If you’ve got a long layover ahead and aren’t already a lounge member, the app enables users to purchase access to lounges in seconds. You can also record the details about your trip, class of service and membership or credit card status and the app will recommend which lounges you can access for a one time fee. It also provides reviews, images and amenities for each facility. The app is available for free on android and IOS.

Sometimes the truth is more frightening than fiction and Aaron Mahnke is out to prove it. Mahnke is the creator, writer and producer of bi-weekly podcast Lore, which delves into the history behind scary stories. It launched in March and each episode explores the facts behind a unique tale to unveil the truth. Take episode seven for example. Stepping into the Woods tells the story of a world that hides dark secrets from prying eyes and holds unknown dangers for travellers. Massachusetts woods plays host to the worst of all, Mahnke reveals. Lore is only 10 episodes in, so it’s easy to catch up on all the frightening tales.

SLOWING DOWN IN SPAIN Ben McKay discovers a quaint Spanish B&B well off the beaten track.

Malaga is a two-hour drive away

T

welve years ago, Di Beach had an idea. A decade of living in California had her conflicted. The finer points of Californian hospitality kept her in America, but the “greed and waste” of the lifestyle left her cold. A change was necessary, and a radical one at that. Her destination would be the other side of the Atlantic; one of the seven villages of the Alto Genal in southern Spain. There in Cartajima, the highest mountain village in the Malaga province of Andalusia, she went to work. Beach says her dream was to build a small bed and breakfast on the mountainside. “Not that any bank manager would give one a loan on the basis of it,” she says. “It was a crazy notion as I didn’t have the money to build it, but somehow believed that it would be possible.” What followed were years of challenges that come with a single woman starting a new business – a new life – in a foreign country. Translation problems, building problems, bureaucratic problems and challenges from the isolation. But what she produced was the perfect getaway, for a weekend or a decade. I would like to thank the Revival Team for helping me transform my body. Being a busy working mother of 3 children I found I just didn’t have the time to try and work off stubborn areas of fat and cellulite. Since using the Revival Cool Body, I look slimmer, my clothes fit better (I have even put on shorts that haven’t fit me for 5 years!). I have combined this with Revivals other treatments and they have exceeded my expectations. For the first time in 20 years I am almost totally cellulite free and have removed fat from areas that no amount of training was successful at targeting. This is the first summer in years that I am actually enjoying wearing a bathing suit! - Michelle

limestone landscape, with eagles circling above, Hotel Los Castanos is finally found after a cliff’s edge drive. With potted citrus trees at the base of white walls, Beach’s creation draws you in from your first arrival. Perfect for couples or travelling friends, this is a place where time melts away in the Andalusian sun. Hotel Los Castanos is best utilised as a base to explore not just the local hills, but many Andalusian sights. Beach describes the typical guest as ”generally sophisticated and educated but not jetsetty”. “We try to make everybody feel relaxed and comfortable, at home if you like, we are anxious for them to

appreciate Andalucia and its treasures,” she says. “We encourage our guests to explore the nooks of the valley – the little bars, chat with the locals, stroll the villages.” While the experience is one of serenity, word has gotten out. Even with just six rooms, Hotel Los Castanos ranks in Trip Advisor’s top 20 hotels in Spain. But on the hotel’s rooftop or your own private balcony, with a glass of local rosado in hand, life moves as slow as you’d like it. Unlike many Spanish localities, a sight-seeing tour of the town of around 200 people will not last a weekend. Walking or mountain biking through

Nearby village of Ronda, at Puente Nuevo Bridge

the hills and bird-watching are the order of the day. Cartajima is a fine base to head to any corner of Andalusia, each worthy of further exploration. Around two hours away by car is the coastal city of Malaga, Cordoba’s rich history, the generous university town of Granada, and the majesty of Seville. Spain’s oldest city Cadiz and Jerez, which gives sherry to the world, is also at hand. The cliff-lined city of Ronda is even closer, where one of Spain’s most enchanting bullrings is well worth a visit. From the coast, a short ferry trip away is Africa – the Moroccan port city of Tangier awaits, for a day trip or the start of a new adventure. However far you choose to roam, coming home to a home-cooked dinner at Hotel Los Castanos is a delight. North African filo-style pastries as light as a feather, tapas and locally grown meats appear on the menu during our stay. It’s over a glass of local wine that Beach reflects on her switch from the States to southern Spain. “Rich Americans would come and learn to be happier with less!” So do these less-than-rich Australians. STAYING THERE Cartajima’s Hotel Los Castanos is located 110 kilometres west of Malaga and is best accessed by car. Rooms start at around AU$130.

BUSINESS AND FINANCE

EGGS IN MANY BASKETS Darryl Watt is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.

T

he beginning of each financial year represents an opportunity to review your financial position and goals. As part of this it is important to review the asset allocation of your current investments. One asset class that is often underrepresented in Australian portfolios is international investments. Too many Australians have too large a percentage of their portfolio, if not all, in Australian investments. To use the old adage they have too many eggs in one basket. The Australian sharemarket is relatively small on a global scale. We represent less than two percent of the world’s capital markets. In addition, Australia has a

concentration of financial (Commonwealth Bank, ANZ, Westpac and National Australia Bank) and resource (BHP and Rio) stocks. Diversification across countries and industries may provide the opportunity to improve the performance of your portfolio over the medium to long term. There are a number of benefits associated with international investments. These include being able to access industries and companies unavailable in Australia. A number of current growth industries, such as technology and healthcare, are severely underrepresented in Australia. Examples of successful and wellknown companies in these areas include Johnson and Johnson, Microsoft, Apple, MasterCard and Intel. Also, the Australian economy is not growing as fast as other countries with some economists already talking about the possibility of a recession.

Investing offshore can help mitigate this risk. A big advantage that Australian investors have is the myriad of ways to make international investments. You can buy shares directly in overseas companies if you have a strong conviction for a particular stock. However, a good way to spread your investment across many different countries and companies is to invest in a managed fund or an exchange traded fund. These funds pool your money, together with that of others, and this is then invested by investment professionals in a range of international shares. MY TIME

TODD’S GROG After a week of restless nights pondering the big questions, Todd takes solace in a bottle of imported Belgian lager.

I

t’s been a stressful week, friends. I’m starting to think my new neighbour is stalking me – she’s been Googling my name on her computer. Seriously, I saw it through my telescope last night. My neighbour says I have boundary issues. Really? Well that’s what I read in her diary anyway. Apart from that, I’ve had plenty of restless nights, just lying awake while my brain keeps working like the rent is due tomorrow. keeping me awake. There’s no masculine way to carry balloons. Really, there’s not. Telling your wife or partner to “calm down” during an argument works about as well as trying to baptise a cat. Did I pay the stupid toll notice from last month’s trip to the Gabba to see the Lions? I wonder if pushing the lift button three times really does put the lift into hurry mode? Funny how people say “money is not the key to happiness”. I figure if I had plenty of moolah, I’d just have a key made and be done with it. Money can’t buy you happiness either, but it can buy you a jet ski and that’s pretty bloody close. I say that a lot I know but have you ever seen someone scowling and miserable on a jet ski? What was the name of the bad guy from Tron? The original movie? Anyone? I wonder if Victoria’s Secret is that she’s hungry? Have a pie you crazy, hot skinny

model type chicks. Is guacamole the tastiest of the foods that looks like somebody already ate it? I believe it is. Do regular dogs see police dogs and think, “oh bugger, it’s the cops”? . These are the crazy thoughts that keep me up at night. Luckily, I have some medicine in the form of amber fluid. This week’s brew is imported from Belgium and put simply, it goes alright. Named after some fancy Duke fella from the 13th century, Haacht Primus Premium Lager is a crisp, dry and refreshing lager. I’m a fan of this kind of brew and the Primus is a very typical 100 per cent Belgium style lager – easy to drink and best enjoyed ice cold with your favourite schnitzel. I give the Haacht Primus Premium Lager 3.5 out of 5 thumbs up.

Are you the one that they want? Auditions will open next month for a production of Grease which will hit Caloundra’s The Events Centre stage in October. Theatrical production company, The Show Co, director and choreographer Maureen Bowra says she can’t wait to see what talent the Sunshine Coast area has to offer. “Grease is the kind of musical that every aspiring performer should be part of at least once in their life,’’ Bowra says. “I’m particularly excited to see who we find for Sandy and Danny. These roles are so iconic and can be a fantastic platform for any aspiring musical theatre performer.” The production will take place from October 22 to 24. Auditions will be held on Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19 in Caloundra. To attend you must submit an application. If you think you have what it takes, download the audition pack via greasethemusical.com.au and register before the close of July 15.

Between 12–12.30pm, Ben and Holly will be available to meet and greet fans. The entertainment doesn’t stop there. From July 7 to July 11, Elmo and Cookie Monster will take to the stage with shows at 10am, 11am and 1pm.

Smiles and giggles are guaranteed all round when Miss Donna the Clown is in town. These school holidays kids can join the balloon artist at the Eumundi Markets and learn the tricks of creative balloon bending at workshops. Fellow balloon artist TwistedMR will also be on hand for the classes which will be held on June 27, July 1, 4, 8 and 11. Miss Donna says the workshops are suited for children aged four and up. “Children get hands-on experience in creative balloon twisting and self expression and get to become official Eumundi Market balloon twisters themselves,’’ she says. “The best part for me is watching their faces light up as they walk away so proud of their own inflatable work of art.’’ The fee is a gold coin donation and there is no need to book. Kids visiting the markets can also have their faces painted, watch a magic show with Nickleby the Magician, discover Spin Art with Zoe or enjoy a fun pony ride. Workshops are at Lonergan Lane in the centre of the markets at 9am, 10am, 11am and midday. Visit eumundimarkets.com.au

It’ll be all things creepy and kooky at Sunshine Coast Libraries these school holidays, with the branches celebrating the best and baddest in children’s fiction. Cartoon Dave will run three cartooning workshops to show children how to draw crazy cartoon vomit, zombies and gross things. Ocean Life will host workshops to help children learn more about our marine life with special guests including a starfish, bamboo shark and a turtle. The fun just keeps getting kooky with children creating their own weird and wacky hats and diabolical disguises. There are pom pom shooters to make, kites to fly, bad board games to create, tree houses to build and monsters with snapping jaws to design. By popular demand, the stop-goanimation classes will return for kids to recreate their favourite scene from one of the Treehouse books by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton. capability. Since then, its rivals have been relatively few – Volvo’s XC70, Audi’s Allroad and, for a brief time, Holden’s forgettable Adventra among them. Recently, though, it seems everyone has been after a slice of Subaru’s action with Korean, Japanese and all manner of European offerings muscling in on this territory. Subaru’s response has been emphatic. It started by completely redesigning the Outback – this fifthgeneration model blends external good looks with the best interior the brand has offered. Secondly, it added a swag of technology including a clever touchscreen multimedia system, a range of electronic safety and convenience features, plus substantial efficiency and output improvements in all three engine options. Finally, and most tellingly, it has taken a sledgehammer to the Outback’s price, cutting as much as $10,000 from the asking price of the previous model. The cheapest Outback, with the 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, has dropped by $3000 to $35,990 – a price matched by the four-cylinder turbo-diesel variant that is the only

necessarily a dramatic one, it has been a thorough one. However, this all-new Subaru soft-roader has done its best to grab the headlines thanks mostly to a massive price cut by its Japanese manufacturer.

The Outback has been on the Australian motoring landscape since 1995 – it was one of the first of the so-called crossover generation that took a conventionally styled wagon and added a touch of off-road

MOTORING

Outback to offer a manual transmission. The biggest saving is on the top-spec 3.6R which, at $47,990, is $10,000 cheaper than the model it replaces, despite having an estimated $4000 worth of additional equipment. With such sharp value, Subaru has even set its sights on a new niche in the market, hoping to fill the void soon to be created by Australia’s big six-cylinder wagons – most notably the Holden Commodore Sportwagon – when the car maker ceases local manufacture in the next year or so. Fittingly, we tested the flagship variant of the Outback, the six-cylinder 3.6R Premium, and it makes an impressive case for big Australian families. That case has been bolstered by favourable exchange rates between the Japanese and Australian currencies, plus the benefits of a free-trade agreement between the two countries. The Outback is a roomy, extremely comfortable and very safe machine complete with the full electric and leather treatment for less than 50-grand. Its competent off-road ability is an added bonus. Upgrades to Subaru’s H6 powerplant mean it delivers 191 kilowatts and

390Nm in smooth, responsive fashion via a very good Lineartronic constantly variable transmission and, of course, the company’s symmetrical all-wheel drive set-up. We found it to be impressively powerful yet refined, comfortable yet sure-footed and, for the money, exceptionally well equipped. It is unquestionably the most plush, sophisticated machine ever to wear the familiar badge. Subaru claims it is also the safest machine it has ever built, with an ANCAP crash-test score of

35.9 from a possible 37 points. In 3.6R Premium trim, standard features include an impressive new touch-screen infotainment system with satellite navigation and the EyeSight collision avoidance system with active cruise control, lane-departure warning, blindspot alert and pre-collision steering assist. The wagon even gets an electric rear door, the first time we have seen this ultra-urban feature on a Subaru. The Outback recently passed 90,000 cumulative sales in Australia, which certainly puts it into the higher end of our favourite imported models, and Subaru is expecting it to maintain annual sales of about 5000. Should it manage to soak up its share of Commodore wagon sales in the years ahead, the Outback will no doubt enjoy another lease of life.

SUBARU OUTBACK 3.6R HOW BIG? It has grown over the years since it first arrived as a mid-sized soft-roader two decades ago. These days it is quite an imposing thing with bundles of interior space for a full-sized family. HOW FAST? With the 3.6-litre, six-cylinder engine found in our test model, it’s amply so. Those in less of a hurry might prefer the cheaper fourcylinder or turbo-diesel options. HOW SAFE? With collision avoidance technology, improved cabin safety and Subaru’s familiar all-wheel drive, it is the safest model the company has built. HOW MUCH? $35,490 (plus onroads) will get you started in the diesel-powered, manual transmission variant. The flagship model we tested is $47,990 but that is a full 10-grand less than the previous model.

Let’s celebrate the good times! As one of the world’s oldest car manufacturers, we want to share our 120th birthday presents with you. Receive a 1.20% p.a. comparison rate^ plus a bonus 2 year extended factory warranty* on selected vehicles across the range.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

A few years ago I was on an Indo boat trip in pumping waves at Lances Left when the crew called me in urgently as someone had been dragged across the inside section of the reef. Yep, it was bad! He had basically scalped himself on his last wave - a bit like Bert Newton’s hair piece and we were 18 hours from a hospital. Thank God for a half drunk captain who knew how to stitch. Pulling into a barrel on a dry reef will do that! Risk vs reward. Jeremy Flores ranked 10th on tour has just done the same so it does not look good for him for J Bay. Injury toll rises. Waves on the weekend with SE winds.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Bream are the go with quality fish being taken on the rising tide, using fowl gut, yabbies and mullet fillet. The pick of the spots is Maroochy Bar. You can get flathead and whiting on the drift from Chambers Island to Goat Island. Tailor are in the deeper channel at the motorway bridge and around where the dredge is working. Use pillies. SURF: The night high tide is the best for chopper tailor and sea bream on pillies and mullet fillet along North Shore, at Pincushion and right along the Kawana stretch of beach. Sand whiting and dart are taking beach worms and pippies from Mudjimba to Marcoola. OFFSHORE: Coral trout, sweetlip and parrot are being taken on squid and mullet fillet at Coolum reef and The Blinker. The Barwon Banks is the best place for quality snapper, pearl perch and amberjack, when conditions allow. FRESHWATER: The colder weather seems to have slowed down the action at most impoundments with the middle of the day the only chance for bass and golden perch at Somerset Dam, Lake Baroon and Lake Macdonald – use shrimps and medium divers. You can find red claw in most impoundments.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Are you stuck in a stultifying Taurus rut? This week’s stars encourage you to be adventurous as you throw off your slippers and go for it. Venus (your ruling planet) hooks up with Jupiter in your domestic zone, so it’s also a good time to socialise with family members.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] Marvellous Mercury aspects boost your gregarious Gemini side and stimulate curiosity. Make sure you fill your week with social activities and learning experiences. Thoughts and ideas could strike at any moment so make sure you have your pen and paper handy.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] The power of imagination is on your side this week. Inspiration will come from daydreaming, as you retreat into your inner crab cave. But you must resist the temptation to shop. Find less expensive ways to amuse yourself!

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Lions can seem brave on the outside but sometimes you feel like a kitten. This week it’s time to take a deep breath, as you promote your accomplishments with cool confidence and chutzpah. If you don’t believe in yourself; why should anyone else?

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Have you been burning the midnight oil? The stars favour taking time out to recharge your run-down batteries, as you contemplate your life and where you’re going. Avoid being overly organised, leave room for spontaneous gestures and exciting surprises.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] It’s the perfect week to channel energy into educating and expanding your mind. Your communication skills are also firing, as you extend your peer group and make exciting new connections. Family comes first midweek, as you work on fostering affection at Villa Libra.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Don’t be shy, Scorpio! Strive to promote yourself, as you push forward in a proactive way. You have much to gain from sharing creative ideas with a colleague. If you’re looking for a new job, now’s the time to strike as lucky Venus and Jupiter enhance your professional persona.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] It’s a good week to stretch your creative wings in new directions. You’re keen to expand your knowledge, as you pick up inspiration from all over the globe. Fabulous opportunities could come from foreign shores, as Venus and Jupiter join up in your travel zone.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Are you experiencing problems with a partner (romantic, business or platonic)? Strive to communicate in more consultative ways as you inspire others with your ideas, skills and community spirit. Venus and Jupiter are in your money zone so it’s a lucky week for finances.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Your bohemian side shines brightly this week, as the stars stimulate your eccentricity. Tap into the adventurous Aquarian you were born to be, as you charm others. You’re also keen to communicate creatively, so collaborate with kindred souls to achieve a win-win result.

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] The sun/Neptune trine and full moon encourage you to be as creative as possible. It’s a wonderful week to channel your inner artist as you write, draw, paint or perform; see a movie, play, concert or art exhibition so you can soak up and appreciate the artistic talents of others.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Rams are on fire mentally, as you dream up a creative scheme or solve a problem in an innovative way. The Venus/ Uranus trine favours romantic escapades or falling in love very fast (an Aries specialty). It’s also a wonderful week to explore with some exciting new friends.

THE LAST WORD

SILENCE IS GOLDEN Even one minute is too long for some people to stay quiet, writes Richard O’Leary.

I

t was one of the ironies that life can throw up – the deplorable behaviour of some fans during the minute’s silence in memory of a man who was part of one of the most memorable acts of sportsmanship. Just prior to last week’s State of Origin game, when the crowd was asked for a moment of quiet reflection on the life and career of Ron Clarke who had passed away earlier that day, some people just couldn’t help themselves. A minute is not a long time for a grown up – it’s less than the time it takes for the video ref to make a call on a try. But it was simply too long for some fans who, through booze or boorishness, thought it was a good idea to yell out support for their footy team while the rest of the ground remained silent. It should be remembered it was

only a half a dozen or so who failed the common decency test, and there were more than 91,000 fans packed into the ground. But for those who couldn’t or wouldn’t shut up, here’s a few facts about that man who you dishonoured through your yobbo behaviour. Clarke was most famous not for a race he won, but for one that represented the essence of sportsmanship. When as a young up-and-coming athlete he fell during the 1500 metres at the 1956 Australian national championships, John Landy stopped and doublebacked to help him. The black and white vision of the act is an iconic sporting moment. A few months later Clarke lit the flame at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to mark the start of Australia’s first Olympics – coincidentally the same venue where

the Origin game was held. During his career, the middle distance runner broke 17 world records, but never won gold at the Olympics, his best effort a bronze in the 10,000 metres at the 1964 Tokyo games. He went on to become mayor of the Gold Coast for eight years until 2012. A life well lived, a life worth giving up a minute of your time to honour. In another of life’s ironies, the situation was best summed up by a man in the crowd who also broke the silence. The numerous interjections had obviously worked him up to a point where he couldn’t stand it a second longer and with just four words, he put all those yahoos back in their boxes: “A bit of respect.”
