OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high-quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.

t must be hard to work out what to do next when you have been hailed a hero by your country. Victoria Cross winner Ben Roberts-Smith says he doesn’t want his heroic deed in Afghanistan to be the defining moment of his life, but in all reality it’s going to be tough to top. His decision to take on a high-flying job with Channel Seven may surprise some people, but this former soldier is not afraid of taking risks. My Weekly Preview talks exclusively with Roberts-Smith about his new career and how he’s settling into life on the Sunshine Coast. Also this week, we talk with one of Australia’s best known gardeners Graham Ross and unearth a surprising family secret, test drive Mazda’s new pint-sized SUV, and stay at a beach resort in Bali that has been voted the world’s best. As always, there’s all the latest fashion, tips on beauty and life, some fast facts and plenty of property. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT

CATCHING THE TRAVEL BUG Buddina journalist and photographer Sam Walker is on an extended holiday in Cambodia, where she’s finding plenty of material for her blog, journoandthejoker.com. FIRST JOB?

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE COAST?

My first job was a part-time gig collecting eggs on a poultry farm. Yes, one of those battery farms that today we all hate. My first full-time job was working for a mechanics workshop in Perth, where I was the general gofer. I saved all my money from this job to help fund a year of backpacking overseas.

I love Point Cartwright. Standing on the hill near the lighthouse and being able to look up and down the Coast and out to the hinterland.

WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO TAKE VISITORS? We usually go for a meal at Caloundra, overlooking the Passage, or a barbecue breakfast or dinner at La Balsa Park. Then we have a fairly well-trodden path that includes Mooloolaba, Coolum, Noosa National Park, Mapleton, Montville, Kenilworth Cheese Factory, Maleny and Mary Cairncross Park.

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . My partner Steve, and myself.

FIRST CAR? A 1966 Volkswagen Beetle. A deluxe model – it had a heater – a knob on the floor that you turned to let in hot air. It was awesome.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE?

FAVOURITE BOOK? I’m a voracious reader of almost anything. Two stand-outs are Ken Follett’s Pillars of the Earth and Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW? Whatever I can get my hands on here in Cambodia. I just started Bou Meng, A Survivor From Khmer Rouge Prison S-21. I have visited the S-21 site in Phnom Penh so I expect this book to be quite a harrowing read.

FAVOURITE SONG? It depends on my mood. It’s a bit daggy but I love a trip back to childhood with some Marty Robbins like The Master’s Call or Lonnie Donegan’s Frankie and Johnny.

YOUR GREATEST REGRET? Not learning a language when I was young.

CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT? The day I got on a plane by myself at the age of 19 and headed to the Middle East to start my backpacking adventures. It was pre-internet, email and mobile phones. I used travellers cheques not credit cards. It made me grow up fast and changed my perspective of the world. I learnt to trust my instincts.

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? I don’t believe only one state makes you happy. Travelling; dinner, a few drinks and good conversation. Reading a book.

To create more job opportunities. There are still such limited options across the board.

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST?

WHAT IS YOUR PREFERENCE, TEA OR COFFEE?

People with no respect for the environment and an attitude that they can’t do anything to change it or don’t want to try.

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? You can do anything. Words from my former employer, a dairy farmer, in Victoria.

IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING WHAT WOULD IT BE?

NRL OR AFL AND WHO DO YOU FOLLOW?

Don’t stress. Take more risks. Travel more.

%N 10T0 ALIA R S AU MADE

Coffee, for sure. Here in Cambodia I generally have a Khmer iced coffee – a lovely dark concoction, full of ice and with sweetened condensed milk. I also love a real Vietnamese coffee, which is drip filtered into a glass with sweet milk on the bottom. It’s partly the taste and partly the ritual of waiting for it to drip through into the cup and then mixing it with the milk.

Not really a footy fan but definitely AFL over NRL. West Coast Eagles all the way.

I would like to thank the Revival Team for helping me transform my body. Being a busy working mother of 3 children I found I just didn’t have the time to try and work off stubborn areas of fat and cellulite. Since using the Revival Cool Body, I look slimmer, my clothes fit better (I have even put on shorts that haven’t fit me for 5 years!). I have combined this with Revivals other treatments and they have exceeded my expectations. For the first time in 20 years I am almost totally cellulite free and have removed fat from areas that no amount of training was successful at targeting. This is the first summer in years that I am actually enjoying wearing a bathing suit! - Michelle

COVER STORY

TV’S NEWEST TOUGH GUY Ben Roberts-Smith – the Commonwealth’s most decorated soldier from the war in Afghanistan – is the new general manager of Channel Seven Queensland based on the Sunshine Coast. It might seem an odd career move, but any job would be left of field from the SAS – the army’s elite special operations force. WORDS: Tamara Simoneau

“Many people are probably not aware of the lengths I have gone to to ready myself and put myself in a position to get a job like this”

B

en Roberts-Smith always wanted to be a soldier. Dreaming of it as a kid, training for it and living it in its grittiest, bloody reality has consumed most of his life. Things changed in 2011 when he was awarded the Victoria Cross, the army’s highest honour for valour, for what the Australian Defence Force describes as ‘the most conspicuous gallantry in action in circumstances of extreme peril’ during an assault on the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2010. Ever since that medal was pinned on his chest, his life has been a perpetual rollercoaster of public lauding, personal transformation and professional reinvention. 14 My Weekly Preview | July 3, 2015

14.indd 1

It brought instant celebrity status – he was a hero. Brave enough to stand strong to defend his men in battles unimaginable to most, down-to-earth enough to seem like a typical Aussie bloke to the masses. He met the Queen, rubbed shoulders with the country’s most powerful, appeared on the front page of newspapers, on the cover of glossy magazines and became a guest TV reporter for Channel Seven. Now, he says he’s not interested in being a public figure. What he wants is to be a businessman, admired for his leadership from the boardroom down, not the battlefield. “I’m not worried about my profile, I’m just worried about making sure I’m

as prepared as I possibly can be to take over. The experiences I have had in the media have given me a great insight into how we operate and a good understanding about creating our product,” says Roberts-Smith. He’s taking over from Neil Mooney, who is retiring from a decades-long media career. Mooney offered RobertsSmith his job after attending a seminar the former SAS soldier was running as part of a consulting company he established that teaches and preaches about creating high-performance workplaces. “I was doing a little bit of that work with Seven and I was asked to go to Queensland and talk to some of their business leaders,” says Roberts-Smith.

Neil Mooney said he was looking to retire and would I be interested in his job. It did come out of the blue, the offer, initially. “I went away for a few months and thought about it and we stayed in contact. I spent a good six months on and off talking with Neil about the industry and how business was done within the industry,” he says. He is aware that he lacks management experience in the media industry, but he makes up for it with confidence and leadership skills honed in the toughest of environments. “Being in the SAS, we used to consider ourselves the ultimate problem-solvers for the government. While it seems a bit abstract to some myweeklypreview.com.au

people, I see a lot of similarities in that regard. “Every day issues arise, to be in a position like GM, you are in a position to fix those problems. Whilst the outcomes are different, the method about how you go about it is similar, says Roberts-Smith. “I didn’t go in there completely cold. People forget that I’ve worked on different shows and with different crews and productions to create content, so I have seen how we do business at a grassroots level, says Roberts-Smith. In March, Roberts-Smith quietly moved to the Sunshine Coast and was introduced to staff at Seven Queensland as the deputy general manager. There was no fanfare in the media or from the network itself about his appointment. He spent months shadowing Mooney, and from July 1, the top job was his. “Many people are probably not aware of the lengths I have gone to to ready myself and put myself in a position to get a job like this, he says. That includes the MBA he started

studying towards since retiring from the army in 2013. The new role represents the closest thing to a normal life the 36 year-old has experienced. “To be honest with you, that was one of the key considerations for me – to find somewhere where I could settle and get back to a normal lifestyle and a community. As much as I love doing the responsibilities that I have, it always means I am not spending time with my family, he says. His other roles include being Chair of the National Australia Day Council, Deputy Chair of the Prime Minister’s Advisory Council on Veterans Mental Health, as well as involvement with several boards and charitable organisations. His wife, Emma, and four year-old twins, Eve and Elizabeth, are big fans of his latest gig, or at the very least, where it means they now live. “Everyone loves being back in Queensland full-stop because we have family here. At the end of the day, what

Emma and I have learned is that, and it is a clichĂŠ, but home is where the heart is. As long as our family is together. It just so happens that we get to live in such a beautiful place. “I’m a Perth boy. To be back on the beach for me is unreal, something that I really wanted to get back to. We are looking forward to getting the kids into Nippers and all the things you get into when you live on the coast. I could swim before I could walk, so I’m pretty keen for the girls to get a good understanding of the ocean.â€? He parachuted often in the military, but now he’s skydiving in his down time, since moving to the Sunshine Coast. “I like that when you are (skydiving) you have to concentrate on it so you can forget about everything else. It is a good mental break,â€? he says. A work-life balance is something Roberts-Smith believes is important for himself and those now under his command. “I really believe that you have to put that effort into your staff. They are the ones that create the outcome. To me, it is really important that we focus on that and we provide a happy workplace and that people there get what they need personally out of the job as long as they stay,â€? says Roberts-Smith. Part of his own balancing act is finding the time to stay physically fit, after years of intense training. “I try and train every day. I normally get up at five every morning. I went from a job where you get paid to train three hours a day to a job where you need to get from A to B. You have to find the time. It’s all just part of it.â€? In 2012, Roberts-Smith appeared shirtless on the cover of Australian Men’s Fitness magazine, tattooed and ripped. “It’s always good for a laugh,â€? he jokes of the spread. But the image of the soldier primed for battle, the hero fighter who put his life on the line for his troops, isn’t all he wants to be remembered for.

“I made a really big point of trying to ensure that whilst I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved and what I did with my mates, I don’t want that to be my defining moment. “It is really hard when you get that award; people read things about you and write things about you, but they don’t know the real person. “I certainly understand that my profile has given me a lot of leverage and opportunities‌ (but) if I don’t produce the results I will get moved on like anyone else. I don’t buy the bit about, ‘Gee, Ben’s so lucky’, because it isn’t about luck. “I’ve worked hard. I don’t sit at home waiting for things to come to me. And I think that’s the difference.â€?

people are expected at this year’s Queensland Garden Expo, which will be held at Nambour Showgrounds on July 10 to12. This year’s event will include an innovative compost system to minimise the event’s impact on the environment – qldgardenexpo.com.au.

NAIDOC WEEK SPORTS LUNCHEON Wally Lewis and Andrew Slack will join forces on July 10 at the Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club’s Sports Luncheon. The sporting legends will help raise funds for the maintenance and purchase of new rescue equipment, surf safety education, member development, increasing volunteer memberships and expanding training programs to keep Maroochydore beach safe.

P&O Cruises will be hoping for better luck this year, with its ship the Pacific Pearl to drop anchor off Mooloolaba on July 18. Last year bad weather prevented the passengers from disembarking. It’s the first of four cruise ships that will stop over here in 2015, with a dozen more likely to make similar visits in 2016.

The Sunshine Coast Turf Club will prove it really can go the distance when it stages its first race over 3200 metres on July 4. More than 3000 people are expected at Corbould Park for the running of the Queensland Cup, which is run over the same distance as the Melbourne Cup.

REVIEW EAST COAST ENCOUNTER

GOOD NEWS FOR AGED CARE

A new exhibition at the Caloundra Art Gallery has just opened, which gives people the opportunity to re-imagine the encounter by Lieutenant James Cook and his crew with Aboriginal people in 1770. East Coast Encounter includes work from Australian Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, writers and songwriters with paintings, photographs, videos and 3D pieces featured alongside a small selection of historic artefacts. The exhibition closes on August 16.

Fifteen-hundred people on the Sunshine Coast will be impacted by changes to the aged care system introduced this week. The new Consumer Directed Care (CDC) gives greater control to those receiving in-home care – including being able to choose who provides the care services in their homes. Visit myagedcare.gov.au.

O’BRIEN TARGETS PALMER The new LNP candidate for Fairfax Ted O’Brien has fired the first shot in what is expected to be a fierce battle for the seat held by Clive Palmer, taking aim at Palmer’s recent brochure: “It fails to mention the Sunshine Coast even once and his long list of apparent achievements sees him take credit for everything short of world peace.”

PROFILE

IN HIS BLOOD AND BONES In the lead-up to his appearance at the Queensland Garden Expo, Graham Ross spoke with My Weekly Preview about the family secret behind his lifelong passion for gardening. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw Better Homes and Gardens and Radio 2GB’s The Gardening Clinic, inspiring countless Australian gardeners for over 30 years. He’s the only Australian to have been appointed a Fellow of the Royal Botanic Gardens in London and only the fourth Australian to receive the Veitch Memorial Medal from the UK’s Royal Horticultural Society. He now knows gardening is in his blood and his bones, and it’s been passed on to his daughter Linda, a landscape architect, and his seven year-old granddaughter, Melaleuca, who loves pottering around the garden with him. “I’ve got two boxes of mushrooms under the house,” Ross says. “I told her I’ve got a surprise and she thought it was a chocolate or a toy. When I showed her she said, ‘They’re just boxes of dirt’. I said, ‘See those little white threads? They’ll grow into mushrooms’. She looked at me and shook her head. Suddenly, the penny will drop and the mushrooms will appear and she’ll be hooked. “I was always amazed that you could pop this tiny seed into the ground and it

grows to two metres tall and produces hundreds of flowers and the more you cut, the more you get. I loved the perfume of sweet peas and I’ve planted them every year of my life since I was four. I’ve never lost that fascination with nature and how it can be so powerful.” Graham Ross will present three talks at the Queensland Garden Expo, at Nambour Showgrounds on July 10, 11 and 12.

disappointed, confused and upset,” says Ross. “Suddenly I realised it was genetic. It took me some time to get to grips with it. “When things were really bad in the 1920s and there was no work, my grandmother’s eldest son went to London to get a job. The only person he knew was his mother’s brother, his Uncle Tom. Within five minutes he had a job and was at Buckingham Palace having cucumber sandwiches on the weekend. “My grandmother had lost her brother and eldest son to the Royal Family. She was so distressed she packed the rest of the family up and emigrated to Australia. My mother died a year or two ago at 97. She confirmed to me they had a meeting on the boat coming out. My grandmother said no one was to ever talk about Uncle Tom and the Royal Family again. “My mother was amazed when I went straight into gardening. She said, ‘We were absolutely gobsmacked. Not only do you look like Uncle Tom, but you speak like him. You’re like your great uncle reincarnated.” Ross went on to host Channel Seven’s

raham Ross was four when he planted his first sweet pea and watched it grow, like magic. As a baby, his grandmother had pushed him around the garden in a pram, talking to frangipanis. She encouraged his interest, but kept a family secret from him that could have explained why he was compelled to spend every weekend from the age of 11 to 21 working in a nursery, while other kids played. “I knew I was a bit weird,” he says. “I thought I was either gay or strange. I did every gardening course from 16 to 25 and was working my way through college when my grandmother called me up and asked me to come over and have a chat.” Three months from dying, she dropped a bombshell. She told Ross her brother was the famous British horticulturalist Thomas Hay, who left Scotland to work as head gardener for the British Royal Family and never returned. His son was the renowned horticulturalist Roy Hay, who married another notable British gardener, Frances Perry. “At that point I was really angry,

LATEST PODCASTS HARDCORE HISTORY WITH DAN CARLIN Dan Carlin has become somewhat of a podcast master. Each week, thousands of people tune in across the world to listen to the American political commentator. Hardcore History won’t only appeal to history buffs. Carlin has a unique way of dissecting the past to create an interesting and factual retelling of the tale. His most recent instalment is called Blueprint for Armageddon, in which he explores World War I. If you like what you hear, there is plenty more. In past episodes, he tests the boundaries and questions what the record books tell us. Was Alexander the Great as bad a person as Adolf Hitler? What would Apaches with modern weapons be like? Will our modern civilisation ever fall like civilisations from past eras? Tune in to find out. To listen visit dancarlin.com. It is also available for free on iTunes.

CHARTING OUR OWN COURSE – Lessons from Jetstar’s journey

Cause found for her depression after 20 years on anti-depressants, weeks later she was excited, happy, motivated and amazed to get her life back.

with David Hall, Jetstar Australia and New Zealand CEO

When she first decided to take the antidepressants, she had felt a lack of interest in life, low mood, irritability, anger, anxiety and insomnia. Exhaustion then caused more anger and irritability. With a young family, the strain was too much, so the antidepressants began, which worked well, though needed to be maintained for a normal life. When I first saw her, she had responded to an ad about depression and was curious about coming off her antidepressants. After asking a few questions, and scanning her brain and body for inflammation, infection, hormone and brain chemical levels, it was clear what the causes were. Nothing traumatic had happened during the time the depression began, she was relaxed and happy as she had returned from an overseas holiday. This always rings alarm bells, as specific bacteria in water overseas can cause depression. We also found that when moody, it fluctuated, with bouts of sleepiness, and fogginess throughout the day, usually indicating a relationship with food, as symptoms start between meals, first irritability and fogginess, then sleepiness. When food does not agree with you, it can cause depression, anxiety, irritability, insomnia and low thyroid function. The liver detoxifies the offending food, by using enzymes which are also involved in making serotonin in the brain. This results in the brain under-functioning leading to low moods. One of these enzymes is responsible for producing melatonin for sleep, so insomnia follows. The thyroid drops in function during a food reaction, reducing progesterone, which creates oestrogen dominance, leading to PMS, menopausal symptoms, severe mood swings and more. Comprehensive testing found food reactions, bacterial overgrowth, and hormonal imbalance affecting the brain. After treatment, starting a diet tailored to her test results, raising serotonin, melatonin, and dopamine naturally, she was feeling amazing within weeks. Depression and other mood disorders affect one in four Australians. It is not a disease that has unknown cause, like many believe, and can be resolved quickly. If you’d like to know more, call the centre and arrange a FREE ½ hour consultation, or view the webinar “7 Steps to Freedom from Anxiety & Depression” at

< Hanuman puts out the fire during a performance of the traditional Balinese Kecak Fire Dance at the Uluwatu Temple in Bali

TRAVEL

BLISS OUT IN BALI It’s easy to see why The Mulia Resort was voted world’s best beach resort. By Katie Wright

T

he sun is setting over the clifftop Uluwatu Temple and a huge white monkey is taking aim at a ring of fire balls, kicking them one by one into the air as an increasingly alarmed audience looks on. But they needn’t worry. There’s not a hint of animal cruelty here. The mischievous primate is actually a human dancer playing the part of

Hanoman, the magical monkey sent to rescue goddess Sita from the clutches of the evil Ravana, in a traditional Kecak Dance performance. With a choir chanting rhythmically against the stunning backdrop, it’s a breathtaking way to start my trip to Bali. Known as the Island of the Gods, the Indonesian province famously practices Balinese Hinduism, but it’s not just religious beliefs that give this place such a heavenly status, with the beauty of its natural surroundings making Bali a beach destination to rival the likes of the Maldives and the Seychelles. I’m staying at The Mulia, an uber-luxe resort in Nusa Dua on the southern tip of the island, which was voted best beach resort in the world by glossy magazine Conde Nast Traveler USA last year. Rooms range from stunning suites with terraces and hot tubs, to secluded private villas with butler service, and I’m lucky enough to be staying in the latter. At first, British politeness takes hold and I daren’t ask my butler for anything, but I’m surprised at how quickly I get used to the VIP treatment.

Dragon Bridge in the Monkey Forest

No Salesmen! No Hype! One contact from concept to completion, too easy!! Quality patios and pergolas built to any budget. All styles, all areas.

The resort overlooks a private beach where the waves lap ever so gently on the white sand shore. The pools are equally picturesque, so I spend my first few days horizontal on a sun lounge and develop a mild addiction to coconut juice, supped from a freshly cut green fruit. The property sprawls over a gently sloping hillside, with the villas, situated at the highest point, offering the most stunning views over neighbouring islands. The resort opened just over two years ago, so the design and decor are modern but still reflect Indonesian heritage, with sloping roofs and heavy carved wooden doors. If you get itchy feet from too much poolside lounging, I’d recommend spreading your excursions out over a few days, or venturing on foot to some of the island’s hidden beaches. While many tourist attractions in Bali revolve around religion, that’s not all it has to offer. Ubud town is the island’s cultural capital and is filled with beautiful galleries selling artworks depicting

local scenes. Wood carving has a long heritage in the region too, dating back to the 14th century, and traditional sculptures are still sold in many of the shops. If you time your activities well, seasonal monsoon downpours will never interfere with your activities and there are many to tempt. The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is a leafy park full of macaques and adorable grey monkeys, while the bustling Ubud market offers an array of products. I make a beeline for a sign that reads Balinese Massage, having heard the island’s full-body treatment is not to be missed. I spend the next hour being pummelled, prodded and twisted into submission for about 60,000 rupiah ($A4). However you play it, Bali offers a unique mix of lively towns, Hindu heritage and sunsets so serene they’ll relax even the most stressed out westerner. Just as long as you steer clear of those flying balls of fire. AAP Katie Wright was a guest of The Mulia & Mulia Villas

MY BODY

Create a fuller lip with staying power

HAIR FIX Burnt your hair on your straightening iron? Don’t despair. Just grab some olive or coconut oil and run it lightly over the ends of your hair. Comb it through with your fingers and it will instantly moisturise and get rid of the burnt hair smell. In future, use a heat-protecting product before straightening to prevent scorching. Try TRESemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Protective Spray, $7.99.

1. Dab some foundation over your lips to create the perfect blank canvas. 2. Grab a lip pencil the same shade as your lips and draw a line just above your top lip and just below your bottom lip. Leave the corners alone and don’t overdo it as it will look clownish. 3. Now grab your lip liner. On the top lip draw the line from the top right of the Cupid’s bow and down into the centre of the lip and do the same on the other side. You’ll have created what looks like an X in the centre of your top lip. On the bottom lip draw a line on the lip contour and then draw two diagonal lines to create another X. This help adds defnition.

NEED A NEW SCENT?

4. Use an angled brush to carefully blend your lipstick into the lines. A brush helps give more control. Do not press your lips together. 5. Shine creates the illusion of fullness so using a lip gloss a shade or two lighter than your lipstick, dab it on your lips, being careful not to go over the lip line.

BUTTER IS BETTER Nutritionist Cyndi O’Meara on the dangers of trans fats.

FIT TIP Need inspiration? Instagram provides plenty of accounts worth following. Toned and terrific, Emily Skye (@emilyskyefit) has a massive 918,000 followers. Her feed has the standard body shots to make you feel inspired or inadequate, depending on your mood, but we also like it for the inspirational quotes and workout routines.

UNDER PRESSURE A Sunshine Coast local has developed a product that helps treat a range of conditions. Erica French, a traditional Chinese medical practitioner, has launched Earseeds, which allow patients to get the benefits of acupuncture from home. Acupuncture therapists use needles on the feet, hands legs, arms and ears to balance the body’s energy and relieve conditions such as anxiety, back pain and headaches. Some also

use pellets that stick to the ear to maintain pressure and relieve symptoms. French developed Earseed kits so that patients can use these pellets at home. Each kit contains a six-week supply of seeds plus tweezers and an ear chart. There is also a kit that contains Swarovski crystal-embellished pellets for those who like to make a statement as well as receive the therapeutic benefits of this innovative product. L

ast week the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a ban on trans fats in the food supply as they were “no longer generally recognised as safe”. Denmark banned trans fats in 2003, but other countries, including Australia, have been slow to catch on. Trans fats are created when the process of partial hydrogenation turns a vegetable oil into a solid at room temperature and are a common ingredient in processed foods. Margarine, deep-fried foods like donuts and biscuits as well as peanut butter and even chocolate contain trans fats. They have a devastating effect on the body and have been shown to increase heart disease risk as well as cancer, diabetes and obesity. I was taught at university in the 1980s that margarine was healthier

than butter, but I knew then they had it wrong and have been talking about the danger of trans fats for many years. Foods from a chemical laboratory are often a danger to our health rather than food that comes from the land and the sea. So how do you know if a food you are eating has an industrial fat? Look for terms like this: vegetable oil, vegetable fat, hydrogenated fat, hydrogenated oil, partially hydrogenated oil, shortening or margarine. Instead, eat good fats from nature (such as butter, lard and coconut oil) and avoid processed foods. The best thing to do is make your foods from scratch and if you are buying packaged foods, read your ingredients (not the nutrition label). Find out more at changinghabits.com.au

MY OPINION

IN PRAISE OF PARENTHOOD

TOURISM TRUTHS

Sami Muirhead reckons it’s time to stop harping on the hard parts of parenting and start celebrating all the good bits.

M

any of us have fallen into the trap of describing parenthood as some horrible event we endure, as we make jokes about wiping baby food from our hair or lie awake at night waiting for our teenage sons to come home safe and sound from a date with some gold digging upstart. How many times do we hear the words ‘expensive’, ‘juggling’, ‘challenges’ and ‘issues’ when it comes to our conversations about kids? We are constantly seeing stories in the media about how much money it costs to raise a child, how much the price of education is spiralling each year, how hard it is to fall pregnant, how tough it is to hang out with people who are not adults all day long. Social media lights up with witty and sarcastic pieces and clever photos about the sacrifices we make to be parents. But where are the stories celebrating parenthood and outlining how fun it is to raise a child? When my friends or work colleagues ask how life is I usually reply, ‘Oh great! You know, busy and feral’. Well, no longer. I am now armed with a new response when asked how life is and how are the kids. Instead of busy, I will say it is so much fun. Instead of saying it’s tiring, I will say it is actually a privilege to raise gorgeous little souls. Instead of expensive, I will say priceless. OK, well maybe I will still say it’s expensive. On any given day, I jump on a

trampoline with Batman. I colour in Avengers pictures and rescue trapped seals from evil pirate characters. I play choo choo trains, trying to get my stubborn but spirited 10 month-old son to eat his food as he sits laughing and smearing bright yellow pumpkin all over his high chair. I sit and drink my tea and just watch my toddler as he dozes off for his midday sleep as he cuddles his stuffed bunny. I would often like to freeze time and keep them all close to me, nice and safe and full of innocence and trust. I get very frustrated most days, but I also get a feeling of contentment and satisfaction that far outweighs any hardships. Recently I was out at some celebration drinks. I watched in awe as 19 and 20 year-old sisters ran up to their father to force him to the dance floor when Blister In The Sun by the Violent Femmes came on. I stood there watching the three of them having the time of their lives and hoped my kids grow up and want to dance with their father. We hear plenty of teenage girls going crazy and all the headaches they cause parents. Gretchen Rubin summed it up: “The days are long but the years are short”. Let’s start a new dialogue that is praising parenthood. For more from Sami go to twomadrabbits.com or you can hear her on Mix FM.

The new state government risks dropping the ball on tourism, which is a real cause for concern for the Coast, writes Bill Darby.

R

esults from the latest International Visitors Survey (IVS) for tourism rank the Sunshine Coast as the best performing region in the state. Queensland is also seeing the signs of a strong recovery in tourism in the wake of new investment and the growth of major events. In the highly competitive race for tourism dollars, standout results don’t just happen. It takes a coordinated and committed effort on the part of all the industry’s stakeholders to come out a winner. The one challenge greater than being on top, however, is staying on top. Speaking at the last week’s biggest annual tourism trade show in Melbourne, Queensland’s Minister for Tourism, Kate Jones, used the spotlight to take a swipe at the former government for supposed funding cuts. There are real dangers in using an international tourism showcase event to comment on domestic government policy. Surely, government ministers are there to represent their constituents, not to use the media opportunities afforded to them to stab the opposition in the back. Compounding the problem of our political culture of tit for tat is the prolific spin generated by the PR machine that feeds our ever-present news cycle. The tourism industry should be concerned about maintaining future growth. In years past, the whole of government approach to tourism saw a

complete turnaround in the figures. Known as DestinationQ, the LNP mob had government connected to tourism operators as never before. Outcomes included Queensland’s successful new Drive Tourism Strategy and Regional Tourism Plans for the next 20 years. In these modern times, where communication is everything, every cabinet minister became engaged with the industry and understood the need to invest in marketing and infrastructure. All spin aside and from my first hand experience as a member the Premier’s Business Advisory Forum, they were doing what was needed to advance tourism. With the change in political fortunes earlier this year, some of the early warning signs are of concern. A part-time minister shared with education has replaced a whole tourism cabinet. The new Premier’s Business Advisory Council has no tourism representative. Massive new tourism projects planned across the state have been mothballed. Industry representatives are being told to wait six months for a meeting with the minister. Let’s not be naïve. Let’s see the blame game for what it is and keep a close eye on what’s real. It won’t be long before we’re once again marching off to the polls. Bill Darby is a director of Rumba Beach Resort and is Tourism & Events Chair for the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce. FRESH FOOD PEOPLE Modern day foodies come in all ages and from diverse backgrounds but have one thing in common – a love for food.

T

he love of food has brought together Australians with a range of interests – whether that be dining in Michelin star restaurants, following recent trends or brushing up on home cooking skills. So what is behind this modern day culinary movement? Influences at play include growth in the international travel market, ethnic Australians introducing cuisines and reality cooking programs and celebrity chefs such as the personable Jamie Oliver.

But one of the biggest contributing factors is a renewed interest in grassroots organic culture. In a recent study conducted by Woolworths in conjunction with McCrindle Research, Queensland University of Technology and Quantium, the supermarket giant has revealed some interesting facts. According to the Future of Fresh research, 82% of Australians believe buying fresh products is important. This compares to 68% five years ago.

What’s more, one in five now want their produce, meat, grains and fish sourced from within their local region. It’s a message Woolworths has listened to and as its newest store opens its doors tomorrow customers can be certain they will find local produce among the shelves. The Woolworths Maroochydore Big Top has had a face lift to the tune of $12 million. There is a freshly trained team of 95 staff members who have a focus on customer service, plus new services including a pizza bar, Grab n Go Deli,

Click and Collect online service and plenty of inspiration. The real drawcard, says store manager Racheal Moila, is the focus on supporting producers and suppliers from right here on the Sunshine Coast. “Almost 100% of produce is from Australia,’’ she says. “We have in excess of 25 local suppliers.’’ These suppliers range from Nutworks, Pinata Farms, Noosa Natural Chocolate Company, Maleny Cuisines, Queensland Yoghurt Company, Country Chef and Homestyle Baking. Some of them will be on hand to meet customers at the opening on July 4 and will continue to host displays and tastings in store during coming weeks. “Customers can meet the local suppliers , understand exactly where the product is sourced and have confidence the product they buy from Woolworths Maroochydore Big Top is local,” Moila says. The new Woolworths will open Saturday, July 4 with a cake and ribbon cutting ceremony at 7.45am. Doors will open at 8am with a face painter, balloon artist and Sea FM on site from 10am1pm. Woolworths will be giving their customers the chance to win a $25 WISH gift card every 15 minutes between 10am-2pm. There will also be an exclusive special for the first 1000 customers in the door on Saturday July 4 only.

Woolworths is open Monday to Friday 8am-9pm; Saturday 8am-5.30pm and Sundays 9am-6pm. Woolworths Maroochydore Big Top is located on Ocean Rd, Maroochydore. Visit woolworths.com.au

SPICE IT UP When it comes to food, natural ingredients are a big plus. This spicy tomato relish, retailing for $7.99, is also glutenfree, wheat-free, dairy-free but the best thing of all is it’s made right here on the Coast. In 1988 two international chefs who were living in Maleny embarked on a crusade with a simple aim - to create a series of recipes that were delicious, healthy and affordable. Maleny Cuisine specialises in a range of chutneys, relishes, jams, sauces and dressings which aid in enhancing the flavour of dishes. Check out their strawberry, lime and whiskey conserve or add a splash of the sweet chilli and ginger sauce to your next meal. Maleny Cuisines products will be available for tasting at the opening of the Woolworths Maroochydore Big Top.

TOTALLY NUTS Nutworks at Yandina has been providing Queenslanders with snacks for almost 20 years. Shoppers will find most of the company’s 44 products on the shelves at Woolworths including the popular Heart Mix. The 90g bag ($4.75) is a blend of raw nuts, dried fruit and seeds selected for heart-healthy omega three fats and disease fighting properties. Nutworks general manager Kylie Watson says the company sources the nuts from within Australia wherever possible., and they are produced and packed at the Yandina factory. Nutworks will have a display and customer sampling available at the Woolworths Maroochydore Big Top opening this weekend.

HEALTHY CHOC Who says chocolate can’t be good for you? Not only are these dark chocolate coated cranberries full of antioxidants but they are as local as you can get. The owners of Noosa Natural Chocolate Company live in Kawana, the products are coated in Noosa and packed in Mooloolaba. Established in 2008, the company has embraced the strong new consumer trend of new age, guilt-free and gluten-free confectionary. These 70% dark chocolate coated cranberries are available at Woolworths along with the rest of the range.

The sun is rising across the pineapple farm in Wamuran and the Scurr brothers are hard at work. There’s watering to do, up to 300 staff to manage; produce to harvest, separate and pack – the strawberries in punnets and the pineapples in boxes. Then it’s into pallets and refrigeration in preparation for the trip to Woolworths’ distribution centre in Brisbane. As third generation farmers these men know a thing or two about growing the goods and delivering them from paddock to plate. Pinata Farms has beginnings dating back to the 1960s and today is one of the country’s leading fresh fruit producers supplying mangoes, pineapples and strawberries to Woolworths nationally. Gavin Scurr says he is proud to know his produce will be on display at the new Woolworths. “We are proud Australian producers of quality, tasty, fresh fruit and appreciate the support from Woolworths.’’

BABY ANIMALS RETURN TO CALOUNDRA MUSIC FESTIVAL What do the Hoodoo Gurus, Baby Animals and Ben Lee have in common, other than being great Australian artists? They all feature on this year’s Caloundra Music Festival bill. The artists join previously announced acts Xavier Rudd, Angus and Julia Stone and San Cisco. Festival director Richie Eyles says the Gurus, Ben Lee and Baby Animals will all perform on Sunday, October 4. “The Gurus are legends and the Baby

Animals are back by popular demand following their performance last year and this time they’ll be on the main stage,’’ he says. “Ben Lee was also a hit a couple of years ago and is excited about making his return to Caloundra”. The ninth annual festival is on from October 2 to 5 at Kings Beach. Early bird tickets are available. Visit caloundramusicfestival.com.

Internationally recognised spirit medium Charmaine Wilson will share her insight with Coast residents as part of her Happy Memories Tour. Wilson shot to fame for her ability to connect with spirits following her 2008 win on reality television series The One, which searches for Australia’s most gifted psychic. During her shows, Wilson says, she connects with spirits and relays their messages to members of the audience. “It’s time for us to celebrate in honour of the ones who have passed, to let them know they are not forgotten, and find joy in life again,” she says of her gift. “I understand how painful it is when the unthinkable happens. “But at some point we need to make a choice about whether we are going to live the rest of our lives in the moment they

passed or to live life in their honour. “I get enquiries from all over the world.’’ The Happy Memories Tour is at The Events Centre in Caloundra on July 11. Tickets cost $50. Visit theeventscentre.com.au

BUSINESS AND FINANCE

RISK VS REWARD Mark Davidson is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.

P

ost global financial crisis, investment returns have been robust, perhaps even spectacular. However future returns are unlikely to be as high as past returns and it important to evaluate what may happen rather than what has happened. Every investment involves risk and it is important to have reasonable expectations of returns to justify that risk. While the GFC is over, its repercussions are still echoing round world economies. Inflation is low, interest rates are close to zero and low GDP growth globally means it is not reasonable to expect year after year of double digit returns. Anyone who analyses their latest super fund returns compared to the past

two or three years will appreciate that. Even though we are in a low return environment it is expected that volatility will continue. The latest ructions have come from a possible Greek exit from the Eurozone. Thus investors who are fully allocated to growth assets could experience a wild ride for some years to come. It is possible that active movement of investments between the different asset classes may lead to higher returns when this volatility occurs. For some investors, this volatility may not matter. Take for example a typical retiree needing a certain cash flow to live off in retirement. They may better achieve their aims through investing in a portfolio of blue chip shares that pay predictable fully franked dividends rather than being invested in a balanced portfolio. That is if they can sleep at night with the volatility that such a portfolio would provide. However it could also be the case that

while their cash flow objectives are being met, they achieve a lower total return than those invested in a mix of local and international shares. Global shares typically don’t pay high dividends like Australian shares and they are not franked. However the growth from international shares is likely to be higher. Whatever mix of asset classes you invest in, it is most likely that future returns will be in the order of single digits rather than double. The implications for investors can be seismic – it could mean adding years to your working life as you struggle to accumulate sufficient assets for retirement. For those already retired it may mean pulling the belt in somewhat. Good advice is paramount. Mark Davidson is an Authorised Representative (no 427049) of Ord Minnett Ltd, AFS licence 237121. manufacturer to its biggest-ever sales month of more than 10,000 units. There is absolutely no doubt that the CX-3 will be a market success. And it deserves to be. But it’s equally certain that some of that success will, in part, be because of the incredible example set by other Mazda models in recent years. The CX-5 is a runaway class leader in the compact SUV segment – the 3 hatchback likewise in the small car category. With the CX-3 it’s perhaps not quite so clear-cut. Nissan’s similarly-sized, and similarly-appealing Juke, for instance, is a more than worthy rival for the Mazda. Mitsubishi’s ASX, which has inhabited this urban SUV space for a couple of years now, still deserves some consideration. Ford’s EcoSport, Holden’s Traxx and Korean options from Hyundai and Kia make this a hotly contested market. But with a price tag starting from $19,990 as well as Mazda’s amazing ability to design cars that perfectly meet the designs and desires of the public mood, the CX-3 is certain to gobble up a large chunk of those sales. Mazda believes the breadth of the CX-3 range will be a key selling point –

hey say that nothing succeeds like success. Mazda is proof of that. After almost going out of business a decade or so ago, the Japanese company can seemingly do no wrong

these days. Where it once had only a handful of models, Mazda now has a handful of best-selling models with a range that spans most market segments. Into that heady mix comes their new

baby, the CX-3 – a pint-sized SUV that seems certain to build on Mazda’s record-setting sales figures. In its first week on the market alone, more than 800 CX-3s were sold Australia-wide – pushing the Japanese

four different model variants (Neo, Maxx, Touring and Akari), with an additional choice of two engines (petrol and diesel), two transmissions (six-speed auto or manual) and the option of two-wheel or all-wheel-drive. Add to that the undoubted visual appeal and build quality across the Mazda range and the CX-3 starts to look like a can’t-miss proposition. Even the entry-level Neo, with a price dipping below the magic $20,000 barrier, enjoys a sturdy list of features including blind-spot monitoring, optional Smart City Brake Support and rear cross-traffic alert (all part of the iActivesense safety suite). The entry-level model also gets the accomplished 2-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine found in its sibling Mazda3 – the country’s best-selling vehicle. It might bear the same “number” as Mazda’s compact 3, but the CX-3 is actually much closer in stature and design to the baby of the Japanese family, the pint-sized Mazda2. In fact, the CX-3’s interior is almost identical to the 2 we enjoyed so much

recently – same minimalist approach to the cockpit design, same excellent mouse-style cabin command system, same vivid colour screen and the same classy interior finishes. The 7-inch colour screen displays satellite navigation, audio and phone settings as well as reversing camera. Like the 2, the CX-3’s instrument panel is dominated by a large, circular tacho in the centre of the dial, with speed display reduced to a relatively small digital readout to the side. That doesn’t matter so much though, because like the 2 it has a funky little head-up display (only in higherspec models) that projects your speed onto a little screen on the edge of

driver’s field of vision. Standard kit in our test model included 18-inch alloys, dusk-sensing LED headlights and running lamps, power windows and mirrors, rainsensing wipers, keyless entry and push-button start plus climate control air. On the outside the story is much the same – this is a surprisingly petite little machine despite its slightly elevated stance and its sporty, almost macho design. And its handling and performance are impressively car-like – it turns in very flat and feels very stable for a smallish machine. The engine is more than adequate, although tended to sound a little revvy at times – not a trait we’ve noticed with this engine in other models including the 3 and CX-5. There’s no doubt the CX-3 will add to Mazda’s success, whose executives must occasionally wonder what they could possibly do to slow the brand’s runaway momentum. Not that they would want to. Success breeds success. And it’s a wave that shows no sign of slowing.

MAZDA CX-3 HOW BIG? It might have some macho styling, but the CX-3 is really a pint-sized machine closer in dimensions to Mazda’s baby 2 hatchback. Interior space is good for a compact machine, though. HOW FAST? It’s quite well-powered for its size, with a choice of two-litre, fourcylinder petrol or 1.5-litre fourcylinder turbo-diesel engines. HOW THIRSTY? The diesel sips a miserly 4.8L/100km; the petrol is marginally more thirsty at 6.7L/100km. HOW MUCH? Prices range from $19,900 for the entry-level Neo model – up to twice that amount for the flagship Akari.

Guilfoyle says, “Our vision is to offer new residential developments with innovative design, affordability and easy safe access and proximity to excellent amenities. Those projects that are well located and well-priced, like First Light, are finding that the

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

So the monster swell hit WA last week with one lucky fellow breaking his leg! Reminds me of the story of a tough Hawaiian surfing in the Eddie who describes a massive wipeout in 25 ft. “I felt something hitting the back of my head only to realise it was my foot!” Yep, snapped his femur and skin was holding it together. Ouch a mumma! Imagine his thoughts as the next set approaches… grab my board or grab my leg? Now for all you big wave riders on the Coast we are expecting a huge two to three feet - so take care!

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Luderick are taking green weed along the textile bags at the mouth of the Maroochy River. Using the weed from the textile bags, fish under the motorway bridge at the second pylon. Quality whiting are on the rising tide at Goat Island using yabbies and worms. You’ll get some good sized bream and flathead drifting around the Bli Bli Islands. SURF: The tailor caught at Mudjimba this week have been of quality size but only run for about one hour after dark. Sea bream are being taken from the Pincushion area using whole pilchards, however, happy moments and butter-bream are picking the baits to bits. So ganged hooks are a must. OFFSHORE: When conditions allow the close in reefs of Currimundi and Caloundra have been returning quality assorted reef fish. If the weather report is questionable, a quick trip out to Murphy’s Reef or The Blinker has been producing a good catch of pearl perch and snappery squire. FRESHWATER: Most dams are slowing down with the colder weather, but all impoundments are reporting cod in good size and number. The middle of the day is best time with your sounder showing best depth to fish.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Busy bulls – the stars favour helping out within your local community, as you assist someone in need. If you pace yourself and prioritise, then you’ll get things done without feeling frazzled. It’s also a wonderful week to socialise with family and friends.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] Money matters look mighty complicated this week twins – especially if your paperwork is chaotic or you’re behind with paying bills. Funds are in a state of flux so the more disciplined, flexible and proactive you are, the more manageable your finances will be.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Calm down crabs! You won’t get far if you are needy or over-emotional. Do your best to balance head and heart. Things improve when Mercury moves into your sign [until July 23]. You’ll feel more rational and less subjective than usual.

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] With Venus and Jupiter both visiting your sign, you’re in the mood to mix and mingle to the max. But will others be happy to hear what you’ve got to say? Monday and Tuesday’s stars highlight your inclination to jealous, possessive or overbearing behaviour.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Relations with a child or friend may be strained. The more you try to organise, the worse things will be, so avoid getting drawn into pointless power-plays. The best way you can help loved ones at the moment is to support them in practical ways, as they pursue their ambitions.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Expect some dramas as the sun and Pluto stir up old grievances with a family member or work colleague. By all means use your diplomatic talents to help, but if you sit back and let others make decisions, then you’ll just feel powerless. Strive to be more self-sufficient.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] The stars boost your magnetism – and your manipulative side. Pluto gives you energy that increases your desire to be in charge but, if you want to avoid unpleasant dramas, then stop trying to control others. You can be powerful and passionate – or compulsive and controlling.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] There may be some stress involving money or intimacy, as the stars stir up your lust and loot zones. So be patient with your partner; be careful with cash and think things through before lending money to others. When it comes to a current project, don’t take short-cuts.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Conscientious Capricorn – your perfectionism will go into overdrive, as the stars amp up your obsession with perfection. But others may find your standards far too demanding and, if you push too hard [with a current or potential partner] then you’ll push them away.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Aquarius – avoid getting drawn into disputes with family and friends. This week will work best if you keep out of other’s business, and concentrate on personal projects. The mid-week Mars/Neptune trine is terrific for experiencing fiery bursts of creative inspiration.

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] If you’re involved with a group, club or organisation, then expect power plays and clashes. Your creativity and intuition fire up mid-week, as you take an idea and turn it into a reality. But, if your inner voice tells you something isn’t the real deal, then make sure you act on that.

THE LAST WORD

SHORT ON LOYALTY Changing your footy team to win votes is simply un-Australian, writes Richard O’Leary.

I

t’s funny how small things can turn out to be a big deal in politics. Bob Hawke’s breaking the world record for the downing of a yard glass of beer cemented his reputation as a man of the people and he would ride that sentiment all the way to The Lodge. Paul Keating’s penchant for antique French clocks would typecast him as aloof and see him kicked out of the country’s top job by a guy who took morning walks wearing tracksuits in the national colours. Tony Abbott confirmed his nickname as the mad monk by eating a raw onion, skin and all. And I think Labor leader Bill Shorten has just had the moment which could well cement his status as the “hollow man” of Australian politics. I was shocked to read Bill actually changed the football team he supports in the chase for a few more votes. As the

story goes, he started barracking for Collingwood after being told he would never become Prime Minister as a supporter of the Sydney Swans. Now I have various opinions of our former leaders and current PM, but I doubt if the beer swiller, clock tinkerer, trackie daks wearer or bulb cruncher would ever do that. I hate the term, but it is just so un-Australian to change your footy team (the obvious exception being those who jumped on the Broncos, Cowboys and Titans once Queensland teams joined the NRL – that’s about state pride not a pathetic attempt at popularity). Now I have changed my opinion on many things over my lifetime. People grow. But I would never change my footy team, although I have to admit I came close in the late ‘70s. My dad and I had just finished listening to the rugby league game of the round on the radio. Parramatta had lost to St George and I

hadn’t taken the defeat well. My dad jokingly asked me whether we should start going for the Dragons instead. My six-year-old self said “maybe”, half-hoping he was serious. But he looked at me and said “Mate, you can’t do that, you start with them, you stick with them”. It was good advice then and it is good advice now. I’ve ridden the highs and lows ever since. Four premierships in the ‘80s followed by a 30-year drought dominated by high drama and disappointment. But I have not wavered. If you can’t stay loyal to your footy team, how can you be trusted to maintain your stance on more important things? Bill, say it isn’t so. Go and get your red and white scarf out from the back of the cupboard, and show some passion for your first club. You may even get a few extra votes. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
