OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high-quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.

t appears my grandparents were ahead of their time. When my mother barely survived childbirth with my youngest brother, Mama and Da looked after my middle brother and me on their farm. My recollections are hazy – I was only four – but by all accounts, we took the couple of months away from mum and dad in our little strides. Fast forward 40 years and as childcare costs continue to rise, grandparents have become the go-to carers for many families. This week we meet a couple of grandmothers who are relishing their new roles. Also this week, playwright David Williamson gives us his take on the Sunshine Coast, we talk to the flamboyant ambassador for the Noosa Long Weekend Festival, test drive the car that is giving convertibles a good name, and there’s a big kids’ guide to Disneyland. All that, and plenty of property including an auctioneer’s tips about how to buy and sell under the hammer. Enjoy, and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT

MAN OF MANY WORDS Australia’s best-known playwright David Williamson lives with his wife Kristin at Sunshine Beach. He is the co-founder of Noosa Long Weekend, July 14 to 26, a festival of the arts launched in 2002. FIRST JOB?

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

Paper boy aged 13. Hurling rolled up papers from my pushbike. Aim was bad and most ended up in hedges.

My father told me to make sure I found something in life I liked doing. He spent 47 years in the bank and said he hated every day of it.

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . My lovely wife, my lovely five children and my extra lovely 11 grandchildren.

IS THERE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST?

When I decided I’d had enough of Sydney. Exciting city when you’re in your 30s. Irritating when you reach your 60s. Too big, too crowded, too frenetic and never any place to park.

Since late 1996.

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE?

WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST?

Beautiful place, good people and you can find a place to park.

To the Sunshine Beach Surf Club. Good food, convivial atmosphere and great views.

FIRST CAR? Ford Prefect. At over two metres tall it was an uneasy fit for me. The seat was so far back it looked like it was being driven by a dwarf from the back seat.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE? Can’t think of a thing.

FAVOURITE BOOK? David Copperfield by Charles Dickens.

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?

WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW?

Had four equally good ones. When I married Kristin and when each of my children arrived.

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty, recommended by my wife Kristin who is interviewing her for the Noosa Long Weekend Festival. Liane is possibly our most successful writer ever, with two number one’s on the New York Times best seller list, a major feature film and a major HBO miniseries on the way. Gripping story.

FAVOURITE SONG? ‘I Had a Dream’ from Les Miserables.

YOU STUDIED ENGINEERING AND SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY AT UNIVERSITY. DID YOU WORK IN EITHER FIELD? I worked as an engineer at General Motors Holden in Melbourne for a year then taught engineering for seven years at Swinburne Institute of Technology. Although I had completed an MA (prelim) in psychology at Melbourne University, my playwright career took off

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? Writing or relaxing with family or friends.

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST?

before I could start post graduate work in psychology. But what I was interested in in my psychology studies – how language was used to obtain power and status in groups – was exactly what I was writing about, so I guess I continued my psychology research onstage.

Things that prevent me writing or relaxing with family and friends. I’m glad this list of questions is finally coming to an end.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THOSE AREAS OF STUDY?

Don’t drink so much beer. Wine is much better.

I chose engineering because being male and being good at mathematics, I was pushed towards science. I hated chemistry and I wasn’t at all interested in [engineering] but finished the degree. I chose psychology because I was passionately interested in the root causes of human behaviour. Something I’m still interested in exploring in my writing.

IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING WHAT WOULD IT BE? TEA OR COFFEE? Strong coffee.

NRL OR AFL AND WHO DO YOU FOLLOW? AFL. I was born in Melbourne. To say AFL is a religion there is a vast understatement. The Swans and Collingwood. Having two teams doubles your chances of backing a premiership team.

SIMPLY GRAND Grandparents who care for their grandkids are worth their weight in gold – and what they give, they get back in spades. WORDS: Candice Holznagel

Care for Kids reveals 55 per cent of Australian families now pay more than $300 a week for childcare

Linda Smith with her granddaughter Isla

F

or 11 years my parents lived at one end of the state and I at the other. It was difficult, but for 35 years north Queensland had been their home so I made peace with the distance. Last year I gave birth to my son, their first grandchild, and the goodbyes after each visit became increasingly more difficult. In April came the news: my 60-year-old dad and 56-year-old mother were selling up and closing the 1200-kilometre distance between us. Evidently, a grandchild can move mountains. My mother says someone once told her “our children are precious but there is no greater joy than having a grandchild’’ and she says she understands this sentiment. They now care for my son on Fridays, alleviating the need for him to go to

14 My Weekly Preview | July 10, 2015

daycare more than once a week. Our situation is not uncommon. According to the Australian Institute of Family Studies, 40 per cent of children under the age of five are cared for by their grandparents on a weekly basis. The statistics don’t lie – take a look around the shopping centres and parks. Maroochydore’s Sunshine Plaza is a prime example. It’s a Wednesday morning and the place is packed with grandparents and their young companions. Among them is retiree, 71-year-old Linda Smith who is sharing an ice-cream with Isla, four. It’s part of their weekly routine. Wednesdays are reserved for ballet lessons followed by a visit to the shops. Smith cares for Isla and her brothers Tasman, 10, and Hayden, 7, up to four times a week. “I go over, depending on the

weather, three times a week in the morning,” she says. “Isla is out of kindy Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but I co-share with her other grandparents. “It’s a lot of fun watching them grow up. I’m there when they get in trouble with Mummy or Daddy, I try to be understanding and encourage them to think about their actions. “The boys know Grandma is a soft touch when they want something,’’ she adds with a laugh. Although daycare is a good option and beneficial to a child’s development, Smith says it’s important the family can rely on her. “It’s good when grandparents can be there for their kids. Nowadays everybody works, but this way they still have family. “For me… it’s good to spend time with them and watch them grow up.’’

Grandparents have become a vital source of childcare as the proportion of mothers in the workforce has grown from 42 per cent in 1981, to more than 66 per cent. With fees on the rise, daycare can be an expensive option. Australia’s leading online childcare resource, Care for Kids, states that the national average fee before government subsidies is $90 a day. On the Sunshine Coast, the average daily fee drops to $78 in Nambour, $82 in Caloundra and $81 in Maroochydore. The Care for Kids’ annual Childcare and Workforce Participation Survey reveals that 55 per cent of Australian families now pay more than $300 a week for these services. Caloundra’s Claire Alexander is thankful she can rely on her mother Marian Atkinson when it comes to caring for her 17-month-old myweeklypreview.com.au

7/07/2015 11:02:16 AM

COVER STORY

daughter Lusea. Alexander works full-time while her partner Gert is a FIFO worker. “Without the help of my mum looking after Lusea for three days a fortnight and when I work weekend and late night shifts, I wouldn’t have been able to return to full-time work as my personal decision was not to place Lusea into daycare for more than two days at this young age,’’ she says. “I felt relaxed knowing Lusea was being cared for by my mother as she has a loving relationship with her. “The time is one-on-one and I knew Lusea would be enjoying a variety of activities on these days.” Atkinson has a strict no-television policy and spends her the time with her granddaughter swimming, visiting parks, listening to classical music and going for walks. She believes it’s not a grandparent’s job to care for a child five days a week but loves the few days she spends with Lusea. “I enjoy it and love her dearly. That’s why I do it,’’ the 59-year-old says. “Lusea benefits by being with nanna… in a familiar situation.’’ Early Childhood Australia chief executive officer Samantha Page says educators recognise that grandparents have an important role in supporting childhood development. “Everyone can play a role in raising children and the more support we can provide to grandparents alongside quality early childhood development experiences, the better the outcomes will be for Australian children. “While grandparents play an important role in supporting children’s early learning experiences, this does not displace formal early childhood education led by qualified early childhood professionals.’’ Page says grandparents will benefit from practical resources to assist in being their grandchild’s first educator. “Last year, ECA proposed the

myweeklypreview.com.au

15.indd 1

development of a Grandstart pack, which would be available to all grandparents who play a role in caring for their grandchildren in the early years,’’ Page adds. “This would be a toolkit designed to be used by grandparents, supported by the latest research on early childhood development and information on relevant government subsidies for grandparents, as well as information on accessing the formal childcare and preschool system.” The Care for Kids participation survey shows 42 per cent of people would like to see subsidies expanded to other care such as grandparents and nannies. In July 2014, the Productivity Commission’s draft Childcare and Early Learning Childhood Report called for the childcare subsidy scheme to be replaced with a means-tested, single payment to be given to the parent’s chosen provider. If grandparents received relevant TAFE qualifications they could receive the government payments, the report suggested. In May this year the Federal

Government announced its new and simpler Child Care Subsidy, which will take effect in 2017. The subsidy will replace the Child Care Benefit and the Child Care Rebate. The government has allocated an additional $250 million on an Interim Home Based Carer Pilot Program for eligible families using nannies. The nannies trial, launching in January 2016, will assist shift workers who are unable to access governmentsupported childcare. Nannies must be attached to an approved service and meet a variety of requirements. While grandparents who act as full time carers to children can access government assistance, there are no plans to support the proposed grandparent subsidy scheme for casual carers. However, Smith says she’s more than happy to continue in her role as a carer without a financial incentive. At the end of the day, it brings her joy and keeps her young. The secret to her youthful appearance is simple, she says. “I don’t hang out with old people. I hang out with the grandkids.’’

Early Childhood Australia chief executive officer Samantha Page

“Everyone can play a role in raising children and the more support we can provide… the better the outcomes ”

FAST FACTS According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in 2009–10, there were 16,000 families in which grandparents were the main carers of children. The Australian Government provides financial support to grandparents including access to the childcare and family tax benefits. In addition, the Grandparent Child Care Benefit covers the full cost of approved childcare for up to 50 hours per child per week. SHE HAD A DREAM… Ten thousand babies have been born at the Sunshine Coast Private Hospital. Big numbers are not something the 35-year-old facility shies away from. It has 700 employees, 20,000 admissions each year and $60 million has been spent on infrastructure and equipment upgrades. It has also become home to the Coast’s largest private mental health service and most recently, introduced a same-day result breast clinic. It is the comprehensive breast clinic that hospital founder Elsa Wilson would be most proud of. In 1977 Mrs Wilson, the wife of Coast GP Jim Wilson, hosted a dinner party to share her vision of the private facility with a group of medical professionals, a solicitor and an architect. In June 1979, Member for Landsborough Michael Ahern dedicated a stone to commemorate the start of the Buderim Private Hospital’s construction and in 1980 it opened to the public with 48 beds. Sadly, two years later Mrs Wilson passed away after a five-year battle with breast cancer.

BIG THINGS FOR BLI BLI

Elsa Wilson The Wilsons remained part owners of the hospital until it was sold to UnitingCare Health in 2000 and renamed Sunshine Coast Private Hospital. Mrs Wilson’s daughter, Heidi Blair looks forward to celebrating the 35-year milestone. “The hospital to me is mum continuing on,’’ she says through tears. “She was so dedicated to it. “I’m so proud to tell anyone, so proud to tell the nurses who my mum was.’’ To honour the anniversary, the hospital is hosting a morning tea for staff, which will include a blessing of the hospital and recognise key stakeholders such as longstanding employees. Past and present patients can join in the celebrations. For more information visit sunshinecoasthospital.com.au.

INSPIRED QUALITY

Bli Bli is no longer taking a backseat in terms of growth, with multimillion dollar projects bringing it to the forefront of the Coast’s development expansion. Last week South-East Queensland developer Halcyon became the latest developer to jump on board the Bli Bli boom, announcing it will construct a $100 million over 50s community with 226 homes on an 11-hectare site. Construction is expected to start in the coming months. Halcyon Lakeside is the second Halcyon masterplanned residential development for Bli Bli, bringing the company’s total investment in the community to more than $200 million. The project announcement follows in the wake of investments including the redevelopment of Supa IGA and River Markets shopping precinct, the $45 million Maroochy River Golf Club, the $2.7 million Parklakes Sports Fields and residential estate Parklakes 2. Halcyon joint managing director Bevan Geissmann says these projects have been pivotal in Bli Bli’s rise. “Bli Bli’s profile as a highly desirable lifestyle destination on the Sunshine Coast has lifted significantly in recent

Halcyon managing directors Paul Melville and Bevan Geissmann years thanks to these key housing, retail, tourism and community projects,’’ he says. “Bli Bli is in the geographic heart of the Sunshine Coast and is an appealing residential destination for baby boomers due to its connectivity, access to amenities and its affordability.’’ It is hoped Halcyon Lakeside will follow in the successful footsteps of the 2012 Bli Bli development Halcyon Landing, a 171-home community that sold out to baby boomer buyers within two and a half years of hitting the market. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says Halcyon has proved to be a good corporate citizen in Bli Bli as well as its major corporate stakeholder.

PROFILE

STAR ON THE RISE

Charismatic Sydney cabaret performer Catherine Alcorn has a big voice and an even bigger personality. She has enraptured audiences around the country in the guise of Bette Midler and Fleetwood Mac’s Christine McVie. As ambassador of the Noosa Long Weekend Festival, she’s preparing to surprise Sunshine Coast audiences as a new diva: herself. By Leigh Robshaw You’ve just completed your debut album, A Real Character. When will it be available? The Noosa audience will be the first to buy the CDs. The album reflects the characters I’ve played. It’s a selection of songs I’ve performed in my three stage shows – four tracks from the Divine Miss Bette, three from You Can Go Your Own Way, and three more obscure songs for a show I produced and created with Paul Capsis for the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. It’s also a reflection on my personality. People always say ‘she’s a real character’. I’m loud and I like to laugh and tell jokes and just have fun.

You were working in TV production when you quit your job to become a performer. Was that a gamble for you? Live performing was what I always did. I trained as an actor and took a job in TV production hoping it would transfer me to the other side of the camera, but it just didn’t work that way for me. I love live performing so much I just saved up money and at the end of 2010 I quit the TV industry and produced The Divine Miss Bette at the Slide Lounge in Sydney. I wasn’t part of the Sydney theatre scene at all. I invited some agents along and none came. But the show kept on selling out and I started playing festivals. A year later, an agent came and saw me and it all just went from there. I ended up being the creative director for Slide for three years, produced some cabaret festivals and ended up creating my Christine McVie show, Go Your Own Way. Go Your Own Way has had rave reviews. What interested you about Christine McVie? I remember going to see Fleetwood Mac with my folks at the Sydney Entertainment Centre maybe in 2005, when I was about 16 or 17 and Christine wasn’t on tour with them. I remember thinking at the time oh, that blonde woman isn’t there and she plays all my favourite songs. When I was thinking about what show to pitch to the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, I was on a flight, listening to Fleetwood Mac’s greatest hits. I was tossing up Chrissie Hynde or Chrissie Amphlett – I’m drawn to strong rock ‘n’ roll women. One of Christine’s songs, As Long As You Follow came on. I thought, oh my god, Christine McVie! No one realises she wrote some of the band’s most famous songs. Will it be unnerving to perform as yourself for the first time at Noosa Long Weekend? There’s always an element of gosh, I’m putting myself out there as me now. When I’m performing as Miss Bette, anything

You aimed to raise $10,000 for the album through crowdfunding and easily exceeded that goal. How did that feel? Great! We’ve had an incredible response. I said to my boyfriend, ‘what if no one pledges anything?’ I’ve even had people in America pledging money. It’s really heartening.

goes. I can say anything and it’s entirely forgiven because it’s in the guise of someone so loved, but playing that character has given me so much confidence anyway to push the boundaries a bit. I’ve picked some funny stories that link back to the songs I’ll be singing. One is a crazy date I went on in New York with a state trooper who wore a gun to the date. He was obsessed with Ireland and it was the only place he’d holidayed for six years. Where was the gun? It was inside his pants. No, he wasn’t just happy to see me, it was definitely a gun! I said, ‘That’s ridiculous, you don’t need a gun’, but he didn’t even hear me. He was a cop; he thought he needed it for protection. There’s no changing that sort of mentality. We went out on a second date and I chose Once the musical, as it’s

set in Ireland and the main song, Falling Slowly, won the Oscar for best song in 2008. So that’s one of the songs I’ll be singing at Noosa Long Weekend. I’ll be telling some more stories about things that have happened to me over the last couple of years. It’s a nice chance to get to know me. What does your role as the ambassador for Noosa Long Weekend involve? Everything from attending events to chatting with locals. I’ll be the face of the festival, going to the Teddy Bears Picnic, doing arts and crafts with kids. A lot of my friends are on the program and they’ve got an artist’s bar, so I’m sure we’ll give that a good nudge. I was totally wrecked by the end of the 13 days last year. You’re doing two or three events every day and the evening. I love it, I thrive on it, the more adrenaline the better.

What’s on the agenda for you after Noosa Long Weekend? I’ll launch the album at The Basement in Sydney in August and then I’ll be touring The Divine Miss Bette through regional Queensland and New South Wales in February, March and April next year. I’d love to take the Christine McVie show to Glastonbury – they’ve got a cabaret program over there. I reckon that would be amazing. That’s in my sights. I’d also like to perform and present a show in New York next year. Is Broadway the ultimate goal for you? Broadway would be absolutely incredible. It’s not something I’m waking up and praying for, but it would be an absolute dream. The next goal for me is to sing an originals album. My background has always been live music and rock ‘n’ roll. So, more touring and live music, maybe a little Aria nomination… Music is really at the heart of me.

TRAVEL

DISNEYLAND TURNS 60 An Aussie expat in LA shares insider tips on how best to do Disneyland. WORDS: Peter Mitchell

T

he visionary Walt Disney made a promise when he first opened the gates to Disneyland in 1955. He said his theme park would never be completed. New rides, attractions and restaurants would continue to be built on the grounds in Anaheim, located about an hour’s drive south of Los Angeles. Disney, who died in 1966, had his wish granted, with the iconic park he called his “happy place” growing each year, including the opening of the adjacent Disney California Adventure Park in 2001. To mark this year’s 60th, or diamond, anniversary Disneyland has introduced some amazing new attractions, with major updates to the night time spectaculars at Disneyland and California Adventure. At Disneyland the grand finale parade down Main Street has been significantly upgraded and over in California Adventure the $75 million night time World of Color show, featuring more than 1200 fountains, animated imagery, live-action films, lasers and special effects, takes place on the Paradise Bay lagoon. Disneyland, following the huge box office success of Frozen, has also

introduced over the past 12 months numerous attractions featuring Princess Anna and Queen Elsa. Yes, you’ll have to listen to Let it Go again, and again, and again. I’m lucky. My kids are luckier. As a child growing up a Pacific Ocean away in Australia, I dreamed of going to Disneyland, but never did until a holiday in my late 20s.

In 2001 I moved to Los Angeles and when my children were born Disneyland became our second home, with annual passes allowing us to enter the magic gates whenever we had time off. Disneyland and California Adventure are huge parks with long lines and it would be impossible for an Aussie family visiting for just one or two days to experience everything on offer. Three days would give you a good taste, while five days would be enough

and you’d be ready to take your Mickey Mouse ears off at the end of the fifth. HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF DISNEYLAND IN TWO OR THREE DAYS • Plan for long days. To maximise the experience, get there when the gates open at 8am. Many people, particularly locals, don’t get to the park until after midday, so identify the most popular rides you want to go on and head straight for them between 8am and midday. • Use FASTPASS. You’ll see FASTPASS machines near the entrance of rides. Insert your admission ticket and it will give you a time to return to the ride. Print it out and go back to the ride at the stated time – you’ll bypass the huge lines. • There are three Disneyland hotels – Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, Disneyland Hotel and Disneyland’s Paradise Pier Hotel. Grand Californian and Disneyland Hotel are the best, although they can be pricey. As well as being located close to the parks (Grand Californian has a side entrance into California Adventure), when you stay at the hotels you can get into the parks at 7am so can really beat the lines. WHAT TO EAT IN DISNEYLAND It’s expensive to eat and drink in the parks, but you’re allowed to take your

own in, so definitely load up on water and snacks and sandwiches if you’re on a budget. But there are some fun options including restaurants where Disney characters visit your table. In Disneyland, if you want a good buffet breakfast, the quaint Plaza Inn has Breakfast in the Park with Minnie & Friends. My son’s favourite is the brunch or dinner buffet at Goofy’s Kitchen (he likes the peanut butter and jelly pizza) at the Disneyland Hotel where a cavalcade of characters visit the table for photos. My daughter’s pick is Ariel’s Grotto in California Adventure where Ariel, Cinderella and the other princesses drop by the table. Make reservations at the restaurants to ensure you get in. – Disneyland hosted the reporter as part of the park’s 60th anniversary. AAP

THINGS TO KNOW Disneyland and California Adventure tickets aren’t cheap. A one-day ticket for an adult or child 10 years or older is $US99 ($130). For kids aged three to nine it’s $US93. Kids under three are free. That ticket will only get you into one park – Disneyland or California Adventure – although for an extra $US56 per ticket you get a Park Hopper that’ll get you into both on the same day. When is the best time to go? Weekdays it’s less crowded. Try to avoid US public holidays.

GETTING THERE Virgin Australia offers daily return services from Brisbane to Los Angeles. Qantas also offers daily flights to LA. For more information visit virginaustralia.com or qantas.com.au.

The group has five core businesses: personal insurance, commercial insurance, Vero New Zealand, Suncorp Bank, and Suncorp Life. Suncorp recently hosted an investor day at which it flagged the potential for continued improvement in operational performance, although some of these savings might be used to support premium discounts in an effort to boost volume growth. The group will make an investment of $75 million to generate $170 million in savings through efficiencies in processing claims, motor vehicle and home repairs, procurement, technology

and business intelligence. This means most of the focus will be on general insurance, while the group office and life insurance division will also receive some attention. We note that the result of similar initiatives that Suncorp previously undertook were difficult to isolate at the time because of the concurrent impact of price increases in home insurance. However, Ord Minnett believes that most of the targeted benefits were realised. Suncorp’s outgoing chief executive officer Patrick Snowball also indicated that a sustainable return on equity in the 2016 financial year of 10 per cent or more was achievable. The group achieved 9.4 per cent last year. However, he offered no guidance on the group’s preferred choice between boosting insurance margins or growing sales volumes. Perhaps correctly, he has left that to incoming CEO Michael Cameron to address when he starts in October. Unlike last year’s strategy day, little was made of capital management. Suncorp has some options available, but in the current environment where regulators are insisting that banks bolster capital levels, we suspect that the

The basics of selling involve prospecting for clients, making contacts with qualified clients, presenting your service and handling and closing the sale. These basics are second nature to those business people who know what services to provide and deliver to clients. They also know how to get results and what they want their clients to commit to. Knowing what you provide and deliver to clients requires confidence, knowledge and strategy and clarity of

purpose. When these traits are aligned then you become proud of what you do. That’s when it’s time to speak out. One way to do so is follow the VIEW concept – visibility, interest, emotional and want. Firstly, do you have high visibility in the market place and with target clients? Secondly, are prospective clients and the general public interested in the product? Are they emotionally

connected to the product or service? Finally, do they want what you have to offer? If you can answer yes to the above questions then you are marketing yourself shamelessly. This is a good thing as it is the only reason why you are in business – to sell an idea, a concept, a service or product. These showed improving trends in premiums against the previous quarter. Most notably, personal lines growth remained positive and commercial lines growth turned positive after having been negative. This is a favourable outcome given recent pressures and questions as to how long and deep a downturn could last. If this growth trend continued into the current quarter, it would be a positive signal for Suncorp and IAG. Ord Minnett’s valuation on Suncorp is not demanding (we have a $14 price target), but we await more evidence of sustained recovery in the general insurance market before taking a stronger positive stance.

MAKEUP ARTISTRY 101 We’re loving YouTuber NikkieTutorials for her fun, informative and sometimes pretty wild online lessons. In her video titled The Power of Makeup, Nikkie cleverly shows how she transforms her face, and she says wearing makeup isn’t about insecure women feeling better about themselves, it’s about having fun. That video has had a staggering 19 million-plus views and counting. Head to YouTube to find out more. Nikkie says she loves a gold eyeshadow, and we agree. Try L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eyeshadow in Hourglass Beige, $19.95.

Beauty fix Lash out If you’ve decided to take the plunge and invest in false eyelashes, good for you. A good set of falsies will give you extra thickness and length without looking OTT. Here are some tips on getting the right lashes for you: • Remember, more expensive isn’t necessarily better. • If you’re buying a full set, take a look at the lash strip as well as the lashes. An invisible or thin strip will be lighter and more comfortable, and look less obvious than a thick, dark strip. • Lashes come in all shapes, so choose a product with a shape that is similar to your eye. • Long is good, but if it’s too long the lashes will look obviously fake. If you’re unsure, a medium length with a rounded shape is a good place to start.

We love powders to give an airbrushed finish but overdoing it can add years to your face – not the look most of us are going for. If you’ve gone overboard with the powder, just grab an empty spray bottle and fill with warm water. A quick spritz will add moisture without causing your makeup to run. It always helps to start off with a decent powder, too. We like Revlon’s Nearly Naked mineral powder foundation, $29.95, which leaves your skin with a fresh and radiant glow.

Priceline is offering Rimmel’s Lasting Finish Soft Colour Mono Blush for just $4.97.

At just $5.99 from Target, you can probably afford to get a few colours from NYX’s range of Butter lipsticks.

EAT UP AND SAVE YOUR SKIN We take our sun safety seriously on the Sunshine Coast, even in cooler months. And while covering up is the best way to stay protected, here are five foods that can help prevent sun damage. Coffee: A study by America’s National Cancer Institute found a link between high coffee intake and a decreased risk of melanoma. Certain polyphenols in coffee suppress cancer cell growth.

Salmon: The omega-3s in salmon can help prevent inflammation caused by UV rays. Salmon also delivers vitamin D to the body. Tomatoes: These are also beneficial for protecting skin because they contain lycopene, which helps to increase collagen levels in the skin and prevents UV radiation damage. Leafy greens: The carotenoids in vegetables such as spinach, kale and swiss chard shield skin from sun damage. Sweet potato: Rich in beta-carotene and vitamin C, sweet potatoes are an excellent form of protection against the negative effects of sun exposure.

SNACK SWITCH If you’re more of a grazer than a big meal eater, remember, snacking doesn’t have to be bad for you. By filling your pantry with healthy snacks – such as air-popped popcorn, vegetable dips and rice cakes – you’re less likely to go for unhealthy ones. Plan your snacks before leaving home and take them with you – this will help you resist junk food temptations. Avoid fruit juices and ‘health’ bars as they are usually packed with sugar, and try not to skip meals, especially breakfast.

LESS IS MORE It’s time to take a rest, writes naturopath Jodi Chapman.

I

s it OK to live in a way that barely gets you through the day? Are you settling for less than something absolutely amazing? Are you choosing to work longer hours, get less sleep, and take on more responsibility? Missing that yoga class or your usual afternoon run, turning your back on the balance of work and play? You may not feel the result of these decisions for many years, but then before you know it, you’re forgetful, exhausted, overwhelmed, emotionally flat, and unmotivated, at best. You may become irritable, angry, depressed, anxious, and very unhappy with the life you have, unable to find the time to do the things that would make life the way you want. Over-worked and over-burdened by responsibilities is a state we develop over time. Emotionally and

physically, happiness relies on how much time we allow for rest. Hormones are needed in abundance to keep up with the energy requirements of busy lives. As time goes on, those hormones naturally decline, and they decline faster during times of stress, making it harder to keep that state of energy and positive mindset. Spend a week going to bed early, until you wake refreshed again. Take time out to read a book in the sunshine and factor fitness and fun into your life again. Get your balance back. Reduce responsibilities and stress where you can, do things to rejuvenate your soul, and feel how absolutely amazing life can be again. Find out more at advancedwellness.com.au.

MY OPINION

F

A CRYING SHAME

THE TIDE HAS TURNED

Sami Muirhead calls BS on a Tasmanian scheme to pay women not to smoke during pregnancy.

Media, politics and commuincation specialist Carolyn Tucker says it’s high time for Australia to legalise same-sex marriage.

orget the State Of Origin, I am still in a fizz over those adorable pictures of the christening of Princess Charlotte. I have been secretly wishing K-mart bring out a replica of that old perambulator just in time for spring so I too can rock my little cherubs around Point Cartwright looking very regal and relaxed. Let’s get real, if I had that old black beauty I would push my shih tzus around in it if I had no babies small enough to squeeze inside. And yes, I am serious. My family is not big on tradition, so there will be no vintage prams on their way. I think the only things handed down from my mum are some ashtrays from the ‘70s, some topless women on a pack of playing cards, and a cool lava lamp. Pity. Prince George of course stole the show in his little smocked shirt and red shorts but was no doubt seething inside about the fact he now has to share his Lego with his little sister. He will not however have to share his Kingdom. I think many of us are so happy to see William have his own family. These scenes of royal (and well dressed) family bliss came as I continued to ponder the news from Tasmania that pregnant women are being paid to stop smoking. A study found that about 22 per cent of Tasmanian women smoked while pregnant between 2009 and 2012, compared with a national

28 My Weekly Preview | July 10, 2015

28.indd 1

average of 14 per cent. For mums under the age of 20 however, that number jumped to 36 per cent who were still smoking while pregnant. I find it a hard fact to understand. Do what you want to your own body but, please, how can you harm your own unborn baby? We all know the risks smoking poses to babies. To name a few, they are more likely to have asthma, respiratory illnesses or stunted lung development, and they are at a greater risk of SIDS. That child has no way of saying no or escaping the harmful chemicals. So in Tasmania, pregnant women who take part in a study are paid with a $50 gift card and their carbon monoxide levels are measured each month. If the results are negative, they are rewarded with a gift card. I find this strange and plain wrong. Pregnant women give up things we enjoy – grog, sushi, blue vein cheese and hot dogs! I am sure we would all love a gift voucher for doing this, but that is a crazy expectation. So pregnant women are being rewarded for not harming their baby. Ludicrous. The world spotlight may be on Princess Charlotte, but every single baby is special and deserves unconditional love and care. Now wouldn’t that be a perfect world?

I

t took a Supreme Court ruling in the aptly named case of Loving v. Virginia to end the prohibition of interracial marriage in the United States. Prior to its ruling in 1967 that race-based legal restrictions on marriage were unconstitutional, marriage between a person classified as ‘white’ and a person classified as ‘coloured’ was illegal under Virginia’s ‘Racial Integrity Act’. It’s shocking to think that such discrimination was ever condoned. The landmark case was cited as precedent in last month’s US Supreme Court ruling, which found restrictions on same-sex marriage to be similarly unconstitutional. It made the United States the 20th country to legalise same-sex marriage since the Netherlands kicked things off in 2001, and came hot on the heels of Ireland becoming the first country to approve same-sex marriage by popular vote in May. Back home, Prime Minister Tony Abbott has managed to turn his fortunes and those of his government around since the ‘empty chair’ challenge to his leadership in February. He has regained control of the agenda but the issue of same-sex marriage looms as a significant test. Tensions have quickly emerged following news that government backbenchers plan to introduce a cross-party Bill on marriage equality when parliament resumes next month.

According to reports, the Bill was to go to the Coalition party room on August 18 to decide whether to allow a conscience vote, but the Prime Minister has already cast doubt on whether it will be discussed. Meanwhile, Government Senate leader Eric Abetz has called on frontbenchers who support same-sex marriage to ‘do the honourable thing’ and resign, adding that same-sex marriage could ‘open the Pandora’s box’ and lead to relationships between multiple partners. Seriously? This time last year, a Crosby Textor poll, found that 72 per cent of Australians want same-sex marriage legalised, while 77 per cent think Coalition MPs should be granted a conscience vote. Support for same-sex marriage is growing. We don’t need an expensive, time-wasting national plebiscite to tell us what we already know. Further delays will only highlight divisions within the Government’s ranks and leave the impression that the views of the electorate are being ignored. On purely pragmatic political grounds, this needs to be resolved as soon as possible. On the grounds of equality, acceptance and respect, change can’t come soon enough. I suspect 50 years from now, it will considered shocking that we once prohibited two people who love each other from getting married and that such discrimination was condoned, let alone enshrined in law.

DREAM TRIP FOR LOCAL BALLET DANCERS Ten young dancers are calling on the community to help make their ballet dreams come true. Caloundra’s En Point Dance Centre students will travel to Europe in August to undertake personalised classes at London’s Royal Ballet Company at the Royal Opera House. Those who successfully auditioned for the Elmhurst Ballet School will then take up residence for summer school. The dancers will also visit the Paris Opera Ballet and meet with former En Point dancer and Hamburg’s Ballet Company performer Georgie Hills. The group will host a trivia night on July 25 to help raise funds for the trip.

En Pointe’s artistic director Leticia Webb says, “These extremely dedicated and hardworking students will have an experience of a lifetime, visiting and training in some of the world’s leading ballet schools. “They will return not only technically stronger, but artistically inspired and with a worldly knowledge of the dance industry that any dance book or DVD could only hope to provide.’’ The trivia night is being held at Unity College auditorium in Caloundra West. $10 per person, barbecue from 5.30pm, trivia at 6.30pm. TODD’S GROG Todd ponders the meaning of true mateship as he samples a new brew from down south.

T

his week we salute the people around us, our best friends, our buddies, our wingmen, the lads and ladies in our life that don’t just remember the crazy stuff we’ve done in our lives, they have actually lived those moments with us. They say a friend will help you move, but a best friend will help you move a body. Friends don’t let you do stupid things. Best friends don’t let you do stupid things alone. In fact, if the idea isn’t about as dangerous as dingos running a childcare centre, then they are immediately out. I’ve got a couple of best mates who have easily said to me on at least a dozen occasions over the years, “Toddy this is by far your most stupid and dangerously effed up idea ever… I’ll be there in 10 minutes.” These are the lads that you want in the trenches with you. The boys who you know for a fact, upon the announcement of your shocking and accidental death, would fly into town to comfort your family and immediately delete your entire search history from your

computer. Solid. Best mates are the dudes who will humour your latest endeavour no matter how crap it is. The fact is that the foundations of a truly ace mateship are fuelled by alcohol, sarcasm, inappropriate humour and shenanigans! All my best mates drink too much, swear far too much and have extremely questionable morals. They’re everything I’ve always wanted in best buddies. These guys are the ones I would feel the worst about killing in a post apocalyptic death match for food. And it’s with that notion that we have a gander at this week’s new brew from the good folk at the Australian Beer Company. The master brewers at Yenda, a small town in New South Wales Riverina region, have set out to demystify the craft beer thing and help us get educated about what beer we’re wrapping our laughing gear around. The brewers have displayed all the beers’ details like malt intensity and hop intensity on the label and the description of the brew too. This week I’ve put away more Yenda Golden Ales than Liam Neeson’s put away bad guys. According to the label the Yenda GA pours a light amber colour, is zesty and refreshing and is slightly malty with a crisp, bold finish. Unlike those pesky Kardashian kids, the label never lies. It’s an absolute treat and is easily a solid session beer all year round. I’m keen as to try their Pale Ale next. In the meantime, I recommend you treat the Yenda Golden Ale like a taxi and get into it!

tip The shabby chic trend peaked a good half decade ago and while those in the know will say it is now dead, look through shops and catalogues and you’ll see plenty of repurposed and DIY pieces that epitomise the look. Rather than dead, we think the trend has evolved. Shabby chic spaces used to be filled with French country inspired chairs, whitewashed timber side tables, pastels and chalky white walls, but the style has moved to also include more masculine pieces, cleaner lines and stronger colours such as aubergine, olive greens and moody magentas.

You don’t have to redesign your space to introduce some old-school cool into the home. Head to your local second-hand or charity shop to stock up on collectibles. You’ll still find plenty of old vases, tea sets and bowls that you can cluster on a side table or bench.

Pair vintage-style furniture with colourful soft furnishings such as these fabrics from James Dunlop Textiles’ Grand Bazaar Collection. Call Rob Larson’s Curtains and Interior Décor on 5444 2412 to find out more.

MOTORING PREVIEW

CLASS ACT Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the AUDI S3 CABRIOLET

F

orget El Nino and the Southern Oscillation Index. There exists in Australia a meteorological force far more powerful than ocean currents and swirling trade winds. It is called the convertible effect - a phenomenon unleashed every time I’m scheduled to drive a convertible. As soon

as our week of open-air motoring arrives, so does the rain. Sometimes just for a day or two, sometimes for the entire week. But almost always whenever a slinky drop-top is parked in our driveway. Usually this means the whole point of driving a convertible - the fun factor - is negated. But not this time.

Oh, sure, when we picked up the Audi S3 Cabriolet the skies darkened and the heavens opened, right on cue. But this time, it did not matter so much. Because the Audi is almost as much fun with the roof up as it is with the sun on your face and the wind in your hair. Convertibles are sometimes unkindly called hairdressers’ cars - vanity

machines that are more show than go because of the extra weight, and dynamic compromises, inherent in removing the steel roof. The S3 is something different. With a high-performance, turbocharged engine, all-wheel-drive grip and a sporty stance, it has all the performance you could ever legally use in this country. What’s more, Audi has kept its weight relatively low which, combined with its sharp performance, makes it a genuinely rewarding thing to drive. Audi has a strong history of building convertibles, including in this compact category where its A3 cabrio has been a familiar presence. But this is the first time the German manufacturer has offered the ragtop with the high-performance S kit, a potent 210 kilowatts and the ability to scream to the speed limit in just over five seconds. That is genuine performance and, when combined with a generous array of luxury and technology features, it makes the S3’s $70,000 price tag look like conspicuously good value. Unlike many high-performance models, the Audi’s chassis has not been stiffened up to the point of discomfort.

MOTORING

The suspension is firm, no doubt, and the chassis has been bolstered sufficiently to ensure it handles and brakes as a machine with this kind of power should. But the S3 can still be very tame to drive in everyday conditions. In normal mode, the six-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission is quite benign. Unless you are in a particular hurry, it delivers smooth, quiet and serene progress. Select sport mode on the Audi drive-select button, though, and it becomes a very different machine. Gears are held longer, the engine spins very willingly and the sound emitting from the quad exhaust pipes takes on an entirely more menacing note. Each gear change is met with a pop as the turbo takes a gulp of air and the super-slick gearbox grabs another ratio. Things happen pretty quickly when the S3 is in this frame of mind. The speed limit arrives in a brisk 5.5 seconds and the Quattro all-wheel-drive grips the road with reassuring tenacity. Yet it still manages respectable fuel efficiency with an average thirst of 7.1L/100km. Inside the S3 is another example of Audi’s growing reputation in this area - it

is thoughtfully laid out, classily finished and delivers a high level of user amenity. The S3’s instrument panel probably pips most of its European rivals in this regard with its brilliantly clear dials, joined by a vivid graphic display. The multi-media interface (MMI) - a turn-and-click mouse-like system illustrated on the eight-inch colour screen - works intuitively and effectively. Satellite navigation, audio settings, vehicle set-up and telephone access are

all readily accessed. Other standard kit on the S3 includes front- and rear-parking assist with rear-view camera, fully-automatic roof with an acoustic noise-reducing feature, sports leather seats, dual-zone climate control and auto wipers and headlights. The safety arsenal includes dynamic cruise control with collision avoidance, lane-keeping and blind-spot warning

systems and a full suite of electronic stability programs. That all adds up to a reasonably generous package for a car that will set you back $69,300 plus onroads. Add another $5000 for the performance package. Keep in mind that is a $25,000 premium over the less powerful but equally alluring A3 cabriolet, which starts at less than $50-grand for the 1.4-litre, turbocharged petrol variant. The need to accommodate a folding roof means that boot-space is compromised. The S3 is technically a four-seater but, like most two-door cars of this size, the rear seats are not an everyday proposition. You could squeeze in four adults but it would need to be a short journey. Even kids will find the back pews a bit claustrophobic, thanks in part to the C-pillar of the cloth roof that blocks out a lot of peripheral vision at the back. That, in turn, brings with it some issues in city traffic, although the blind-spot indicators on the wing mirrors help in that regard. Peel the roof off, of course, and visibility is no problem. As long as the weather co-operates.

AUDI S3 CABRIOLET HOW BIG? Based on the compact-sized A3, this is a modestly sized machine with a wheelbase of just 2.6 metres. So it is primarily a twoseater with a couple of handy but not comfortable seats in the back. The folding roof means boot space is restricted. HOW FAST? Delightfully so. The engine is willing and free-spinning, with a fabulous sound. Combined with its Quattro all-wheel-drive drip, it is a serious little weapon. HOW THIRSTY? Its 7.1L/100km thirst is not great for a car of this size, but pretty decent for something this quick. HOW MUCH? From $69,300, plus onroads, you will need $70k before you put this sweet little thing into your driveway. But that is not bad value for well-heeled empty-nesters.

PROPERTY

AUCTION STATIONS Licenced auctioneer David Holmes runs you through the auction process.

Y

ou have met with your agent and he’s made some suggestions around how you should best go about selling your property. Perhaps he has even mentioned the ‘A’ word – AUCTION! So let me explain what the two most popular sales processes offer and why one may be the better option for your home. An auction in its purest form is a competitive buying arena where buyers attempt to outbid each other to secure the property. You may have seen the staggering auction clearance rates in the southern states and perhaps even have watched massive prices being achieved on popular renovation TV shows. Not every auction is like this, but there are still many convincing reasons why this is the most effective way to market a property. The two most important ingredients in a successful sales strategy are competition and emotion. Emotion is what buyers feel when they walk through the front door of a home. Competition is the feeling buyers experience when they realise there is another potential buyer who also likes the property. There are

several ways of creating competition and emotion around a property and the first is via open homes. At an open home, buyers are given 30 to 45 minutes to view a property. It is often here that a buyer realises there are others interested in the property. This creates the competition. An auction strategy opens the door to the idea that there is more than one buyer for your property. It creates urgency. The seller provides the date, the deposit amount and the settlement time frame (terms) and asks buyers to front up with their best offer on auction day and battle it out against each other. This auction day competition is the best chance of achieving a premium, as there is no ceiling on the price and a skilled auctioneer will create a comfortable buying arena where bidders are motivated to pay their highest possible price. It is rare that when a price is put on a home via the private treaty method that a higher than listed price is ever achieved. Usually, a lower than listed price is achieved. The auction process in Queensland does not list price ranges or guides, so buyers have to view the home to get a

sense of it. The auction process means buyers can connect with the home, the location and its offerings without making a decision based purely on the numbers. Some reasons sellers may consider the auction process initially is their property may be very unique and difficult to price. The auction process is effective in capturing buyer feedback throughout the campaign and will enable the seller and agent to work together to set a reasonable reserve and achieve a fair market price. Conversely, if selling an entry-level home suited to first home buyers or downsizers, the auction process will create competition and achieve the highest result. For example, if your agent has appraised this style of home at $375,000, the private treaty process may achieve this price but without a sense of urgency and without obvious competition. If, however, three or four buyers were to compete for the home in an auction situation, the possibility of achieving two, three or even five thousand more is strong. The auction contract is a cash, clean and unconditional contract, meaning

that at the fall of my gavel on auction day, the house is sold. On auction day, all buyers must have completed their due diligence including organising any finance, researching titles and easements and organising building and pest inspections. There is no cooling off period under auction contract conditions. Throughout the auction campaign, which is typically 30 days, should a buyer make an offer that is hard to refuse, as the seller you can still accept this offer. It is, however, strongly advisable that the buyer fulfil any and all contract conditions prior to the auction day in order not to lose any campaign momentum should the contract fall over

PROPERTY

and not complete. The best strategy here is to encourage the buyer to attend the auction and make his or her offer via a bid under auction conditions. In the scenario where you have stuck steadfastly to the process and the home has not sold at auction, take heart. The auction process is just that: a process. Data shows up to 20 per cent of homes that don’t sell under the hammer go on to sell within 14 days of the auction. This is most likely because the auction process usually attracts buyers to work with who

may need to conduct additional due diligence, be offered extended or reduced settlement terms or organise finances. A private treaty process of sale is vastly different to auction and can be effective in some situations. For instance, if the property has an overwhelming weight of evidence as to what the price should be or where the market would see it, a private treaty can be an effective method by which to sell. As an example, if a two-bedroom unit on the second floor of a complex has had

multiple identical units sell within a 12-month time frame, it is likely that purchasers and investors know approximately where the value lies. If the unit is not likely to have multiple interested parties, a private treaty process may be effective in attracting the best purchaser who is able to conduct his or her own research without fear of missing out. The only myth I would like to dispel is the cost of marketing and advertising for homes sold by either process. Every seller

who is serious about selling their property must commit to the best promotion of the house by a comprehensive mix of print and online media. Whichever method you choose to sell by, you want to achieve the highest price in the shortest amount of time. The only difference in costs between a correctly executed campaign via private treaty or auction should be the cost of a skilled auctioneer who can effectively extract every dollar from the market. with MWP’s man in the water

Wow, never thought I’d meet a psycho in the ocean. But after 35 years of surfing I met this guy last week with serious anger issues… laughing at him did not help the situation…oops. Seemed to be a serial nutcase from what the crew told me. I thought being in the ocean made you mellow, although in his defense he was on a wave ski. I’d be cranky too! J Bay is on…go Julian, Mick, Owen and Parko. Eight foot is predicted! Sunday is looking the goods with WSW. Nothing big but should be fun everywhere…maybe Mr Cranky Pants will relax! Not a chance. Be happy. You are on the right side of the grass.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Flathead are keen to take lures, plastics and live bait on the drift past almost any sand bank and drop off, from Bli Bli to the Maroochy Bar. Bream are taking mullet and fowl gut in the deep channel edge off Goat Island. Luderick, although timid are still moving along rocks and the sand bag walls at the mouth of the Maroochy. Just look for the weed growing and that’s where they are feeding. SURF: Tailor are here tonight and gone tomorrow as they are moving north. Baby blue pilchards and lures are both working in the deeper gutters by day and WA pillies are returning better quality on the night tide with Pincushion and Alex Headland the best. Sea bream are taking gar fillets off Coolum Rocks. OFFSHORE: Close in reefs working well for pearl perch and snapper with berleying returning quality fish at dawn and dusk in places that most anglers are cruising over on their way to the wider reefs. My latest trip to the Banks returned mixed reef fish and plenty of them. Quality jew are being taken in the Caloundra area. FRESHWATER: Winter bass are working bait from 10am to 3pm which suits most anglers. Lake Baroon has bass feeding a thermocline just off the bank at a depth of about six metres.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Close relationships will be difficult early in the week, when Saturn pours cold water on communication, cooperation and displays of affection. Then the new moon highlights your neighbourhood zone, so get out and about in your local community.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] The new moon shines a spotlight on money matters. Resist the urge to be careless with credit. If your finances are in a mess, then you need to develop some fiscal skills, with the guidance of a professional. Phone a friend and have a good long chat.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] You love to feel comfy, and sudden changes can catapult you into a state of catatonia. This week the planets shake up (and then pulverise) your crab comfort zone – especially involving work matters or relationship issues.

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Lions are feeling mighty restless! Some cats start the week with a bang, as you cause commotion behind the scenes; while others stir things up in a very public way. But is that really such a smart idea? Disruptive behaviour will just alienate you from others.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] The week starts well, when the creative gods are on your side and you seem to intuitively know what others require. Enjoy the phase while it lasts. Then you’ll feel extremely unsettled mid-week, as trivial matters irritate you – and important issues get your blood boiling.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] You pride yourself on your well-rounded personality but it will be difficult to balance head and heart this week … but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. Loved ones or colleagues will try to throw you off balance; scramble your logic; and press your emotional buttons.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Power struggles and disagreements are likely mid-week, unless you can keep your Scorpio need to be in control under control. Swallow your pride and strive to sort out a problem that’s developed between you and a loved one.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Sagittarians are the gung-ho gamblers of the zodiac. But this week – with unpredictable Uranus stirring things up – the odds aren’t in your favour. If you succumb to the urge to bet, buy, spend, splurge and speculate; then you could end up being a big financial loser.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] You’ll have trouble coping with any restrictions that are placed on you by loved ones, so family relationships are likely to be unpredictable. The more you try to assert your authority, the more woeful the week will be. Just remember – you can’t be the boss all the time.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] You’re keen to converse with a wide audience, but are you communicating with the right people? Be careful how you convey your message as the sun and Uranus throw a fiery hand grenade into the social media mix. Take extra care when driving too.

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] Monday is the perfect day for some personal pampering, as you nurture your body with a special treat. Are you worried about money matters? Look for innovative ways to improve your cash flow and boost your bank balance. But avoid discussing finances with a friend.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Uranus stirs up your reckless side early in the week, as you surprise others with an unpredictable move. Avoid being bossy mid-week, as you strive to be assertive rather than aggressive. When dealing with a family issue, resist the urge to be hot-headed.

THE LAST WORD

IT’S NOT EASY BEING GREEN It’s time Tony Abbott embraced his inner greenie, writes Richard O’Leary. Q: What do Kermit the Frog, Spearmint Leaves lollies and Tony Abbott all have in common? A: They have all found it’s not easy being green. You remember Kermit’s song, It’s Not Easy Being Green: It seems you blend in with so many other ordinary things And people tend to pass you over Cause you’re not standing out… That’s certainly been the case for some iconic Aussie lollies, with Allen’s announcing it’s ending production of Green Frogs and Spearmint Leaves. In the end, it came down to a simple business decision – Red Frogs were outselling their green counterparts by 10 to one – so the colour-coded kill was ordered by the confectionary giant. It also seems our Prime Minister finds it difficult to identify with the colour of forests, ferns and moss. Last month the Group of Seven (US,

Japan, Germany, Britain, France, Canada and Italy) said the planet needed to phase out fossil fuel emissions by the turn of the century, and committed to cutting greenhouse emissions from 2010 levels by 40 to 70 per cent by 2050. It was an historic statement and Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt backed it and went further, saying it was likely Australia would have zero emissions by the end of the century. But Tony Abbott was red (with rage) not green (with envy). In a calculated interview with shock jock Alan Jones, he talked down cutting greenhouse gas emissions and talked up reducing renewable energy, in particular wind farms. “When I’ve been up and close to these wind farms, there’s no doubt, not only are they visually awful, they make a lot of noise. What we did in the Senate was reduce, reduce, capital R-E-D-U-C-E,

we reduce the number of these things that we are going to get in the future.” Abbott’s former boss John Hewson, once a Liberal leader and now a leading advocate for clean energy, said the comments risk Australia being seen as the “global laggard” on climate change. As pointed out recently by regular My Weekly Preview columnist Keryn Jones, Australia’s stance also risks Australia sacrificing economic opportunities created by the world going from carbon-based energy to renewable energy. It’s time Abbott embraced his inner greenie. Take it away, Kermit… Green’s the colour of spring And green can be cool and friendly-like And green can be big like a mountain Or important like a river Or tall like a tree. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
