OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high-quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.
f we are what we eat I’ve undergone a few changes in my lifetime. During my childhood I was a peanut butter and honey sandwiches on white bread boy. In my twenties I became barbecue bloke with plenty of meat and beer. In my thirties I was a pasta and soda water warrior, while in recent times I’ve become more of a green shake and sushi man (not at the same time, mind you). My experience roughly resembles how all our eating habits have changed as we find out more about nutrition. We’ve walked away from low-fat, low-calorie and high-carb diets (or we’ve been told we should) so what do the next few decades have in store for us? That’s the question we’ve asked in this week’s cover story. We also profile local author Gary Crew – a prolific writer who still gets a kick when his latest novel is launched. In Travel we head to Fiji for some island romance, and this week Leigh Robshaw chats to Tony Moroney, a local hero with a passion for helping sick kids.

QUICK CHAT
HATS OFF TO TONY Tony ‘Top Hat’ Moroney has raised $100,000 in five years for HeartKids children’s charity. If you see him rattling his donation tin at Caboolture markets or in his home town of Woodford, say g’day and spare a coin – he doesn’t bite. FIRST JOB?
friends. I’ve got three families: my family, the tattoo family and the heart family.
I was about eight years old and I worked in a corner store in Sydney stacking shelves. It taught me how to value money. I made about $2 a day. That was back in the early ’70s. I just did it off my own bat, decided I wanted money for myself and the only way I was going to get it was if I worked for it.
HOW LONG DO YOU PLAN TO KEEP FUNDRAISING FOR HEARTKIDS? Until my heart gives out; I’ve got a bad heart myself. I’ve thought about stopping a few times and the wife’s given me a kick in the arse and said stop pitying myself.
FAVOURITE BOOK?
WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST?
Sex and Thugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll by Billy Thorpe. It was absolutely brilliant; he was brutally honest.
Arrogant people. If you ask them for a donation and they give you a filthy look. They turn their head, pretend they can’t see you or hear you. Manners don’t cost anything. When I’m out fundraising I get abused, I get called scum, I get the stink eye. It’s outrageously putrid. I cop it on the chin most of the time, but every so often it gets to me that bad, I just lash out. Heaven help them. I’ve got a potty mouth, my father keeps telling me. It’s mainly people in suits that look down on me. It’s the people that can’t afford to give money that are the ones that dig the deepest.
FAVOURITE SONG? Stairway to Heaven. Love my Zeppelin.
BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE? IMAGE: CARLYLOOYAH.COM.AU
Marrying my wife Annie on April 23, 2005 at St Michael’s in Caboolture. I’m now her full-time carer. She’s got fibromyalgia and lupus.
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? Be myself, be true to myself. My wife told me that. We’ve been together since 2000. I only had about half a dozen tattoos when I met her. I said I wanted to get a full body and she said, ‘What’s stopping you?’ I said, ‘Well, nothing now’. She had more tattoos than I did, so I went full on.
YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? When I see my wife smiling. When she’s suffering the least and smiling, I feel absolutely wrapped.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? Been up here since I got out of the Air Force in 1993. I was a chef.
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? I’d done all of Australia bar Western Australia and I thought I’d give it a go. I own just under 11 acres at Woodford and I’m waiting for a developer to take it off my hands. I’ve broken my back twice and I’m in pain all the time, so I can’t manage it. I sneezed in bed the other night and I was in excruciating pain.
CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT? The day I met Benji Simpson in 2010 and started fundraising for HeartKids. He was a four-year-old boy who’d already had four open-heart surgeries. I met him at a tattoo show at Scenic Rim. On the way home I said to Annie, we’ve got to do something for these kids. People say, don’t you feel upset? They’re getting help and you’re not. I say, no, I’ve lived a life, I’m 50. They haven’t had a chance. One baby I met passed away three months after I met him. I was absolutely shattered. I don’t know how his parents felt, but it killed me. I’m forever meeting new heart kids and that keeps inspiring me. We become
WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? I reckon the $100,000. I feel absolutely brilliant knowing I’ve raised that money for the kids. The way I look and the way I get treated by people, it’s amazing I got there.
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE? Get rid of the VLAD laws, hell yes. I’ve suffered with them something fierce. I had a heart attack. Four times I flatlined in the ambulance, got to the hospital, because I looked like a bikie, the ECGs went in the bin and they sent me home. That’s the way I get treated. Thank you Mr Newman. My old man is an ex-copper and he said it’s ridiculous what they’re doing.
WHAT WOULD YOU TELL YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF? Oh lord, don’t waste your youth. I did a hell of a lot of drinking. It was a waste of time. To help Tony reach his next goal of $120,000, visit heartkidshero.everydayhero.com/au/top-hat-tony.

FOOD HABITS OF THE FUTURE

To find out how we’ll be eating 25 years from now, take a step back in time. WORDS: Richard O’Leary

ou pour a litre of water into the blender, rip the top off of an airtight packet and add the cream-coloured substance, put the lid on the top and then turn the knob to its highest setting for 10 seconds. You pour the liquid into a drink bottle and scull or sip depending on whether you want a quick bite or a long breakfast. Then repeat. At lunch. At dinner. At breakfast. For the rest of your life. That is the future of food according to the makers of Soylent, a Silicon Valley-inspired answer to wasting all that valuable time eating. Inventor Rob Rhinehart came up with the idea in 2013, while trying to find his fame and fortune by working out a way to make less expensive cell phone towers. Funds were running out as he tried to perfect his designs and he had to find ways to cut costs and save time. He soon realised that preparing and consuming food was eating away at his budget and deadlines, so he put his main project on hold to try to discover a cheaper and faster way to get his nutrients. His answer was a powder that contained everything the body needs without going to all the fuss of making an actual meal. Instead of sourcing all the key nutrients from a wide variety of foods, he simply found out the quantity of amino 14 My Weekly Preview | July 17, 2015

acids, lipids, carbohydrates and everything else the body needs to survive and ordered them online. He then mixed all the raw chemical components together and created Soylent. He tried it for 30 days and felt so good he dropped his idea to make phone towers and focused on turning it into a marketable product. Thousands of Americans have joined the Soylent
This year, Cyndi O’Meara celebrates 25 years as one of Australia’s most respected nutritionists. “When I first started out, back in 1990, I was ridiculed because my ideas were counter to the thinking at the time, but I knew I was right then and, of course, modern thinking has eventually come around as well,” O’Meara says. She believes the changes in food and
“Over the next 20 years we’ll see a big trend towards more doctors recommending food and diet in preference to drugs” Cyndi O’Meara revolution, with no need for cutlery or dinner conversations ever again. But is this really the future of food? It sounds rather bland, boring and just a bit depressing, so My Weekly Preview asked a couple of the Sunshine Coast’s best known nutritionists for their take on where the next few decades will take us with food, diets and health.
health trends in the next 25 years will be just as dramatic: Growth in edible community gardens. “The importance of local and seasonal foods and the growing interest in a sharing economy will see farmers’ markets available in the week instead of only weekends. I think you’ll see that [Woolworths and Coles] will change
with the trends and they’ll realise people want local produce.” More nose-to-tail eating, bone broths and fermented foods. “People have become allergic to food, and I believe it’s because we’ve destroyed the one thing that helps us digest food and that’s our gut, and the bacteria that lives in our gut. “We’ve being doing broth for 40,000 years. We’ve been fermenting foods. Those traditional ways, we now know in the science world, increase nutrition, increase preservation and allow us to store foods. But we just wiped culture and tradition and believed through science that we could make food better, where in actual fact we’ve created a disaster, and now we’re going to go back to those traditional ways of eating and cooking.” Fewer prescription drugs; food used as medicine. “At the moment in Australia people will pop 46,000 pills in a lifetime. Doctors will move away from prescribing drugs and towards lifestyle approaches to manage illness. I am seeing more and more doctors realise that what they’re being taught in medical school about diagnosis and treatment with medications is not working – and they’re moving to lifestyle [as a treatment]. Over the next 20 years we’ll see a big trend towards more doctors recommending food and diet in preference to drugs.” myweeklypreview.com.au

James Colquhoun fresh food they can afford and avoiding diet products, processed foods and fats, and factory-farmed meat and dairy. It’s a message being heard across the world with Colquhoun’s company Food Matters attracting three million unique visitors to its website every month, while its email and social media platforms have three million subscribers. He says the future of food will be all about going back to basics: Sustainable farming. “Our relationship with the soil and where our food comes from is one of the most important things on the planet. And yet it’s one that we have bastardised. We’ve taken a very short-sighted approach to agriculture through the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. The solution is to come back to local, organic produce.” Community-supported agriculture. “There’s going to be a continuing proliferation of the farmers markets or CSA’s [community-supported agriculture] or home delivered organics. Communitysupported agriculture is where a small group of people negotiate directly with a farmer for their fruit and vegies. So you are bypassing a whole lot of the wasted supply chain. To keep lemons all year round from Woolworths means that they’re getting them from America
– it’s just ridiculous.” Colquhoun says he has witnessed a steep rise in farmers’ markets over the past five years. Fermented foods. “I think one of the big changes will be the consumption of cultured foods and beverages. We are starting to see a bit more of that now – but we haven’t seen the full extent of that. Traditionally, we’ve always had fermented foods and fermented beverages. If you look at the Germans and their bratwurst sausages and sauerkraut, you look at the Japanese they have pickled ginger, pickled vegetable and miso, which is fermented soy, then you look at the Indians and their curries and they have the pickled mango chutneys. So every traditional culture had fermented foods. Now they’ve disappeared from the modern diet. That is causing a degradation of our gut bacteria.” Bee health. “We’ve neglected bee health in a big way. We ship 747 planes full of bees to California to pollinate the almond crops each year in California, and a lot of them don’t come back. And they’re not coming back due to colony collapse disorder, and a lot of the European counties have acknowledged that colony collapse is caused by the pesticide residues on the plants. So all throughout Europe they’ve banned this particular chemical in order to prevent the bees from disappearing and dying, yet America and Australia are not really following Europe’s lead on that.” Superfoods. “I like superfoods because they bridge the gap between
supplementation and whole foods. We know there are some foods which are strangely high in nutrients compared to others and so by consuming those foods we are consuming natural multivitamins and minerals. We’re starting to discover more superfoods from oral indigenous history in Australia. They’ve been foraging for these foods for centuries and we’re just starting to understand them now.” You are what you eat Like most experts, nutritionists can find it hard to reach a consensus, but Colquhoun and O’Meara are in fierce agreement about a few things – we’ll be eating more locally grown produce, more fermented foods and drinks and using what we eat as not only a way to improve our health but to treat sickness as well. If they are right, superfoods would appear to have a much better chance of being a regular part of our grocery shop than the utilitarian method of nourishment recommended by the makers of Soylent. And that may be just as well for anyone who fears life imitating art. The name of Rhinehart’s meal in a drink comes from a 1973 science-fiction film Soylent Green. The movie is set in a future where overpopulation, pollution and poverty have left most people relying on a mysterious green wafer for sustenance called Soylent Green. The film ends with the macabre revelation: “Soylent Green is people! It’s people!” Which gives a whole new meaning to you are what you eat.

Faecal transplants go mainstream. “We’ve destroyed our microbiome [the community of microscopic organisms, such as bacteria, which inhabit the human body] through generations of chemicals and bad food and drugs and medications. It’s not something easy to fix, we can’t just give a drug to fix it, even probiotics. Faecal transplants see healthy bacteria introduced to a recipient via enema or oral capsule to replenish the microbiome, as the gut is recognised as the centre of healing. We’ll see a trend towards this and we’ll see a trend towards probiotics rather than antibiotics. We’re going to stop killing our bacteria and start realising the worth of our bacteria.” Increase in infertility and illness. “Infertility, diabetes, thyroid problems, ASD, chronic fatigue, obesity, autoimmune diseases, cognitive decline will all increase for those who don’t change their diet and lifestyle. Just last night I did a talk and three mothers came up to tell me their babies could not drink their milk – they couldn’t feed them any food because they were completely allergic. I had other mothers come up to me and say ‘that baby is an IVF’, ‘I had to go IVF’, ‘all my friends are infertile’. I didn’t see these infertility rates 20 years ago. “My predictions for the next 25 years may not be popular, but I’m confident they are accurate just like my last ones were all those years ago,” O’Meara says. “They may seem controversial now, but they will be mainstream by 2040.” James Colquhoun is another Sunshine Coaster making his mark in the world of nutrition. Seven years ago he spent his life savings to make a film about healthy eating to persuade his father that the prescription drugs he was taking for chronic fatigue syndrome were killing him, and that there was a healthier alternative. Food Matters became an instant hit and inspired a sequel Hungry for Change. His father is now fighting fit and takes no medication at all. Colquhoun preaches a simple message of people buying the best quality

MY OPINION
A DAY TO REMEMBER
CRYSTAL BALL GAZING
Johnny Depp set a great example for other celebs when he visited sick kids in a Brisbane hospital, says Sami Muirhead.
I
s Johnny Depp one of the greatest men alive? He certainly has my vote after visiting two very special Sunshine Coast kids in the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital. Our children are the most precious things in our lives and anyone who has spent time in a hospital room knows it tears your heart out to see sick kids. Enter our swashbuckling real-life hero who, in full pirate costume, jumped on a black chopper from the set of the new Pirates Of The Caribbean movie at the Gold Coast and spent his spare time cheering up sick kids. What a refreshing change from spoilt and wealthy celebrities who are more obsessed with taking a good selfie. Johnny visited local teenager, Bella Harry, and chatted for a good 20 minutes. Thirteen-year-old Bella is in hospital with bone cancer and has become an inspiration to many of us with her mega-watt smile and brave attitude. But the reality for Bella and her family are days filled with pain and uncertainty thanks to surgery, chemotherapy and six months in a hospital room. It must be a gruelling and frightening reality. What a tiny relief from so much seriousness thanks to Captain Jack Sparrow. Little four-year-old Sonny Clements from Burnside also received a visit from the big-hearted actor. Sonny’s mum, Kate, says her boy was terrified of the A-list star. “Johnny just played it down and said it is okay to be scared, as he is also
afraid when he sees his own face in the mirror,” the mum of four laughed. “He also spoke to me about his own children and said he understood why Sonny was a little apprehensive.” I met Kate when we were both pregnant and we were in the same mother’s club. There were 12 of us and never in a million years would I have thought four short years later that bub would be fighting for his life. I was having my first child and Kate was having her fourth baby, so naturally many of us leaned on her for advice on how the hell to raise a baby. Kate was always laughing and confident. Sonny has Guillain-Barre syndrome, which attacks randomly and infiltrates the immune system and works its way cruelly and systematically through the body, often resulting in shutting down lungs and the heart. Sonny is a fighter and hopefully will beat this horrid condition. Sonny first complained of aches in his legs and flu-like symptoms. Kate thought it was just growing pains. I would have as well. There were fears Sonny would not walk again, but the little Spiderman fan has proved he is made of tough stuff. But every step is painful and Sonny has a long road ahead, with many therapies. If you would like to help Sonny, visit gofundme.com/getsonnywalking.

With the State of Origin done and dusted, Nathan “Nugget” Dell has some predictions for the rest of the sporting year.
N
ow that the festival of lunacy that is State of Origin is over (shame New South Wales missed game three – it was a cracker) I have whipped out my crystal balls (yes I have two, one is in HD) and looked at what the rest of the sporting year will bring. NRL Premiership – Johnathan Thurston will complete the most impressive resume in rugby league by leading the North Queensland Cowboys to a premiership, defeating the Roosters in the decider. The cheering of the crowd will be drowned out by Thurston’s laughter. Nugget’s guarantee – Canberra will lose a game by 30-plus and Ricky Stuart will blame the refs, touchies, ball boys and Margie the little old lady who runs the canteen at Bruce Stadium. AFL Premiership – Hawthorn will go three in a row. Cyril Rioli will boot five as the Hawks bash Fremantle by eight goals. Dockers star Nate Fyfe’s pain will be eased by winning the Brownlow Medal and Dolly magazine’s ‘Most Pashable Celeb’ for 2015. Nugget’s guarantee – James Hird’s hair will announce its retirement form the game, a now follicularly challenged Hird will be helped out by his good mate Robert ‘Dipper’ DiPierdomenico and his lower back. The Ashes – Australia, to be led by Steve Smith, the world’s most talented pre-pubescent batsman,
will beat the Poms three to one. Warnie will inexplicably appear on the balcony after the fifth test, half nude and showering the aristocracy with champers. Nugget’s guarantee – Kevin Pietersen will legally marry an octopus during the series just so he gets some attention. World Swimming Championships – the Aussie ladies, led by Cate and Bronte Campbell, will dominate the pool, winning virtually everything but Marco Polo. Nugget’s guarantee – The men’s team will have all the appeal in the pool of a floating Polly Waffle. Melbourne Cup – Perennial runner-up Red Cadeaux will finally win the cup and as an added bonus will come third in the Fashions on the Field. Nugget’s guarantee – In a scandal to rival Fine Cotton, one of the runners will be revealed to be Kim Kardashian. V8 Supercars – With Ford’s place in V8s looking shaky, V8 Supercar officials will usher in a new team and the Datsun 200B station wagon will take its place on the grid for 2016. Nugget’s guarantee – Even though he will be 251 points behind after the final race, Jamie Whincup will be named champion so as to keep with the tradition of the past five years. You can hear Nugget on Zinc 96.1.

TRAVEL
PARADISE FOUND A romantic getaway with your mum can be more fun than it sounds. By Leah McLennan
“D
o you think we’ll have separate beds?” asks my mum. “I really hope so,” I reply. To be honest Fiji, let alone an adults-only resort, was never on my list of possible destinations for a holiday with my mum. But Likuliku Lagoon is making me think again. It’s 27 degrees, I’ve transformed from a scarf-wearer to a bikini-clad bather. We’re waving at couples we recognise from the South Sea Cruises transfer from Denarau Marina and we’re sipping welcome drinks. Perusing the other guests around the sleek infinity pool, it’s obvious we’re the only pair who won’t be doing any kissing this weekend. The lovebirds range in age from a young man holding hands with a woman who is heavily pregnant (possibly on their babymoon), to a group of grey-haired couples who are laughing
together like lifelong friends. It’s the ideal romantic escape, whether you’re in love or rediscovering love. Arriving by boat (or helicopter), the first thing you see is a string of overwater bures – Fiji’s first and only. There are also bures on terra firma with private dipping pools: one of which has our name on it. Located a snorkel’s throw from the beach, our room has two beds (hooray), a comfy sitting area, an indoor and outdoor shower stocked with body products and a plunge-pool with a day bed. With its unspoiled beaches, aquamarine sea, superb cuisine and a sun that hugs you like a cashmere jumper, it provides a stunning romantic setting. As the sun turns fairy floss pink we walk along the crushed coral pathway to the main for a Fijian Indian feast, held every Sunday. At 6am we take a boat to Monuriki Island, a stunning uninhabited speck of land where Tom Hanks grew a beard and ate lots of coconuts in the film Castaway. We don snorkelling gear to swim from
the boat to the shore, spotting zebra fish whooshing in formation and cobalt blue starfish along the way. We return to have a breakfast of twice-cooked Gruyere cheese souffles with fresh coconut water. Overall, we find it deliciously easy to pass two days at the resort – it’s definitely not long enough. As we depart the Fijians play ukuleles and sing a farewell song, which brings tears to my eyes. All staff members have come to the jetty to see us off, even Coco the resort’s labrador. I’d been searching for a while for a holiday destination for mum and I, where the food is impressive, the location idyllic and people are warm. I never for a second thought I’d find it in Fiji. AAP

Does Your Immune System Constantly Crash? Always Have Colds and Flu?
The right fit makes all the difference
Have you ever wondered why some people suffer with an immune crash right after exercising or working too hard? Whether it’s a cold or flu that sets in, virus, or adrenal fatigue, it could result in a week or two in bed recovering. During long term stress, hormones such as cortisol and adrenalin are produced in high quantities keeping up with the extra demands on your body. When the time comes to rest, the adrenalin stops pumping, which has an effect on your overall hormonal balance, causing the stress hormone cortisol to also drop. For those who suffer with a relatively low immune system, which you may not notice until this time, the adrenal fatigue triggers an acute response, rendering you susceptible to infection. Focus on your immune system through times of stress, developing a strong defence against adrenal fatigue will help. What controls your immune system is the balance of good to bad bacteria that are naturally occurring and inhabit your gut. There are a number of good bacteria that have an impact on your day to day health, your immune system, and your digestion. These are found in dairy, fermented foods and probiotics. There are also however, affecting approximately 90% of our population, bad, unnecessary bacteria, having an even bigger impact on how well you cope, and recover from stress. These bacteria are the cause of your poor immune response during times of stress. These bacteria produce D-lactic acid, in quantities that far outweigh the level of lactic acid that should be circulating in your system. Your body naturally produces L-lactic acid through exercise, for brain function, and for energy production. We have an enzyme that can break down the L-lactic acid once it is not needed, though we don’t have an enzyme to break down D-lactic acid formed by these bacteria. High levels of D-lactic acid produced are not removed, leading to colds and flu, pain and muscle tension, fibromyalgia, fatigue, and mental health symptoms such as fogginess, insomnia, depression, anxiety, heart palpitations, and nervous system problems. Recovery can take a few months, though the positive effects are noticed within 2 weeks. If you feel you may be suffering with this type of immune imbalance, consider getting help, as it only continues to cause gut depletion of nutrients and poor immunity further over time, affecting energy production for life. If you’d like to know more, call the centre and arrange a FREE ½ hour consultation, or view the webinar “7 Steps to Freedom from Anxiety & Depression” at

MY BODY
HAIR ALERT Want to go from brown to blonde this season? You’re in luck, as the dirty blonde look, rocked here by Suki Waterhouse, is right on trend and allows you to ease into a lighter colour. The roots are dark and move into blonder tips via warmer honey tones in the body of the hair.
All about Kylie
COMBAT THE COLD Not sure how to use your lip liner? Here are three quick tips. 1. Don’t contour outside the line, especially if you have thin or uneven lips, as it will just look too overdone. Instead, line your lips with a pencil that is a shade darker than your lips and accentuate your cupid’s bow. 2. If you need your lippy to last, pencil in the entire lip before applying your lipstick. The pencil will help hold the lipstick into place. 3. If you plan not to use lipstick at all, go with a softer, thicker pencil, using a brush to blend.
Fall into line
Kim Kardashian is not the only member of the reality TV clan to be branching out into the beauty world – younger sister Kylie Jenner has just announced she will also be launching her own blog soon. Renowned for her love of contouring, the 17-year-old has revealed she plans to share her makeup secrets with her fans. She recently told her 2.8 million-plus Instagram followers, “Can’t wait to release all my beauty secrets on KylieJenner.com coming soon.”

Heading to the snow or down y south? You’ll need a few more beauty products to counter the cool dry weather. MY LIFE
MOOD FOOD Nutritionist Cyndi O’Meara says choose your mood by choosing the right food.
O
ver the past 30 years, the rate of depression and anxiety has increased enormously. More than 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression, making it one of the most debilitating and expensive illnesses in the modern world. Considering most people are materially better off today than 30 years ago, what has caused the increase? Could it be a result of the foods we eat affecting the brain chemicals that balance mood? There are three main chemical neurotransmitters in the brain. They are dopamine, noradrenaline and serotonin. Dopamine and noradrenalin keep us alert; they make us think more quickly and increase motivation, mental acuity and productivity. Serotonin is the calming brain chemical – it produces a relaxed, more focused, less anxious, less stressed, more euphoric feeling.
Peppy proteins such as meat, fish, eggs, freshly shelled nuts, yoghurt, cheese and legumes cause an increase in the brain chemicals for alertness (dopamine and noradrenaline), while calming carbohydrates such as wheat, rye, millet, oats, rice, bread, pasta and starchy vegetables cause an increase in the brain-calming chemical, serotonin. Another important aspect of mood health is having a healthy gut. If you are prone to depression, avoid alcohol and caffeine and ensure omega 3 fatty acids are included in the diet (sources include salmon, inca inchi oil, tuna, chia seeds and walnuts). Avoid refined foods and get regular exercise and plenty of sunlight each day.

PROFILE
CREW’S NEW TALE TURNS HEADS After 30 years as a writer, Gary Crew still finds launching a new book as thrilling as ever. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw
A
s a child, acclaimed Maleny author Gary Crew wasn’t great at school and had no aspirations to be a writer. He did love reading, however. One day he plucked a book from his parents’ bedside table: Headhunters of the Coral Sea, by Ion Idriess. It was a thrilling tale of the shipwreck of the Charles Eaton off the coast of Queensland in 1834. Torres Strait Islanders beheaded the ship’s passengers in a grisly massacre, but spared two boys and raised them as their own. Crew says the story “gnawed” at him for many years, until he finally sat down to write his own re-imagined version of events while on leave from his job as Associate Professor of Creative Writing at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Voicing the Dead was launched in Melbourne on July 6 and is based on the true story of 14-year-old Jack Ireland and 18-month-old William D’Oyly, who were raised on the Island of Mer (Murray Island) following the shipwreck. William was rescued after two years, but Jack Ireland had to make his own way back to London, where he proceeded to write an autobiography, The Ship-Wrecked Orphans, published in 1845. Crew drew on this autobiography and the Idriess book to write Voicing the Dead, a work of creative non-fiction he says will appeal to teenagers and adults alike. “What I like about it is, it’s Queensland,” says Crew. “Secondly, it’s true. And thirdly, it’s a phenomenon. The Torres Strait Islanders weren’t cannibals but they beheaded all the adults and mounted their heads. The boys were taken as returned ghost sons and welcomed as children of the islanders. They were treated with great respect and it was a loving, reciprocated relationship. “So ultimately, when a rescue ship came to take them off, they didn’t want to go, particularly the little boy. The islanders were the only parents he’d ever known. Upon his return to London, Jack Ireland demanded an audience with the Lord Mayor and gained a court hearing. Incredibly, the content of that hearing
became Jack’s autobiography, which he co-authored with a newspaper reporter at the age of 17.” Crew is Australia’s most awarded author for children and young adults and in a career spanning 30 years, he has written more than 70 books and stories. He’s won the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book of the Year award four times, along with numerous other awards, but he says publishing a new book is still a thrill. “There is nothing like it,” he says. “While you know it’s coming, you still go to your post office box and there it is. You have to sit in your car very quietly by yourself and hold it and say, I’m holding you. It’s the
%AN 10T0 LI A R AUS MADE
most wonderful experience, apart from having your own child.” Crew recently returned from Canberra and Melbourne, where he gave keynote speeches and conducted book signings. People lined up with Voices of the Dead in one hand and Strange Objects (his groundbreaking work of 1990, which has been re-launched for its 25th anniversary) in the other. Even now, having achieved a phenomenal career as a writer, he can’t quite believe his success. “I’ve had to go back to my room and have a talk to myself,” he says. “I get kind of… I feel this can’t really be happening to me. “I think my attitude is to do with coming from a very working class background in Brisbane in the 1950s. It was the classic Brisbane family – dad shovelled coal, mum stayed home. I went to a state high school, I wasn’t a particularly good student then. I don’t know what I predicted for myself, but I didn’t predict I’d be signing books in a queue or be an associate professor at a university. “Sometimes things happen to you that aren’t in your life’s flight path. I’m not complaining, but I feel it’s hard to get used to. It can happen to somebody else, but not me. “I think anyone in the creative arts doubts themselves. I think if you’re a singer or musician you doubt yourself. Every single one I know gets off the stage and says, was that okay? In the creative arts, where you’re giving something out of yourself, occasionally you think yes, I nailed that, but as soon as you think you’re good, you trip over. “There’s an old proverb: humility goes before honour, and I think that’s a good thing to bear in mind. Once you start believing your own press in the creative arts, you’ll trip over. I think it’s good to be humble. I’m not saying that facetiously. I think it’s good to be open to learning and say there are other ways to do things.” Crew will be speaking at the Brisbane Writers Festival in September.

FREE-TO-AIR TV IN TROUBLE Justin Scattini is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.
L
ike thinly talented contestants in a reality TV show, free-to-air broadcasters have less and less to offer advertisers as audiences turn their attention elsewhere. This awkward routine was clearly on show when Nine Entertainment downgraded its profit guidance for the 2015 financial year. Sadly, the confession reflects a material decline in the free-to-air advertising market. Nine’s position isn’t helped by the fact that it has ceded share to other broadcasters. For the ratings year-to-date, Nine’s share among commercial stations has fallen by two percentage points to 36.5 per cent. While Seven maintains its number one ratings position, Ten has been
gaining share from a low base. The problem for broadcasters though is not shifting market share. Instead, it is that free-to-air audiences are declining. In the first 15 weeks of 2015, the prime-time audience (6pm to 10.30pm) fell by 7.5 per cent against the previous corresponding period. Our analysis of the numbers behind this decline reveals two areas of concern. Firstly, younger audiences are tuning out. Among 16- to 39 year-old viewers, 20 per cent less watched Seven’s main channel, 25 per cent fewer tuned to Nine, although Ten’s programming grabbed an additional seven per cent. Overall, 14 per cent of this age category no longer sat on the couch watching TV. Prime time viewing matters. Australia’s metropolitan free-to-air market was worth $2.5 billion last year. Industry estimates suggest that 75 per cent of that is spent during prime time (split 55/45 between weekday and weekend viewing). Another concern is that the decline in the total prime time audience on each network’s main channel fell 14 per cent.
Main channels drive 85 per cent of industry revenue. While the loss of main channel audience is not a new trend, the accelerating loss is troubling. Again, the trend is worse on Seven and Nine. Ord Minnett considers the recent launches of on-demand offerings such as Stan and Presto by the major free-to-air networks as a defensive response, rather than a revenue opportunity. While the share prices of the TV network companies – Nine Entertainment, Prime Media, Seven West Media and Ten Network – have fallen significantly as these viewing trends develop, we are not inclined to recommend accumulating them. We fear the reality of their situation is yet to be fully revealed to their investing audience. Justin Scattini is an authorised representative (no 427053) of Ord Minnett Ltd, AFS licence 237121. HOT TIP: Buy Orora Limited (ORA). A company focused on fibre packaging and beverage packaging in Australia and packaging distribution in North America. Clear cost-out opportunities should help to drive earnings growth in the Australasia division, and a weakening AUD/USD exchange-rate will likely bolster earnings generated in North America. Target price $2.35. Source: Ord Minnett Buderim.

RETIREMENT
NEW AND IMPROVED Lendlease’s new display homes are a collaboration with Sunshine Coastbased property styling and interior design company Blink Living. “The recent boom in retirement developments has seen our interior design take on another dimension,” says Blink Living interior designer Dianne Conley. “Our approach is all about creating an inviting, inspirational yet practical space incorporating the latest trends in homewares and

any of the 15 villages that developer Lendlease owns or manages in Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and other areas of regional Queensland, have opened up newly refurbished homes to the public. Prospective buyers can now get a sense of the size and quality of the homes. Greg Little, the regional manager of Lendlease’s Retirement Living business in Queensland, says the new display homes reflect the extensive
accessories to make the decision an exciting next step for any new resident moving into a village” Units in Queensland villages range from $110,000 for a one-bedroom, $150,000 for a two-bedroom and $265,000 for a three-bedroom home with a car space. refurbishments now common at most of the villages. “We understand our new residents are looking for a well-designed space, along with a great fit-out to suit their lifestyle, hobbies and other needs,” he says. “Experienced Queensland designers have helped us to maximise the space, creating a light, airy and modern feel, neutral enough to display individual treasures, and fill with memories and new experiences too.”
BUYERS HEAD BACK TO NATURE Nature’s Edge over-50s community at Forest Glen has experienced strong sales since it was launched. The developer says the premium community facilities, maintenance-free lifestyle and the fact residents can easily lock up and leave, have been the driving forces behind sales at the $120 million community. Nature’s Edge sales manager Lyn Morrison says sales have exceeded expectations during the first six months of the year. “We’ve noticed a particular type of buyer has shown interest at Nature’s Edge,” Morrison says. “They are mostly those who want to live life to the fullest, they know their best days are ahead of them,
and it’s all about having fun and enjoying new experiences.” She adds, “Our policies of no stamp duty, no exit fees and only permitting owner-occupiers in the community are also proving to be very popular with buyers. “Our goal is to create a real sense of community where residents can enjoy maintenance-free luxury resort-style living in a stunning rainforest setting.” The first release of the Dawn stage is now sold out and there are just a handful of sites in the Boulevard release. These north-facing home sites are within walking distance of the $2 million leisure centre.
Morrison adds, “In order to meet the current strong demand, we’ve decided to bring forward the civil works for the last 45 home sites in stage one. “It’s a great time to come secure one of the remaining sites and the best way to do that is to come and inspect the displays and see the high-quality home and finishes we have on offer.” She says each home has an eight-star energy rating including solar panels. “The most popular designs feature two bedrooms plus multipurpose room, two bathrooms and a double lock-up garage,” says Morrison. ith fuel prices constantly on the rise, more motorists are looking towards cars that are inexpensive to run. They should be looking at the Suzuki Celerio, which has topped the RACV’s annual running costs survey, continuing on in the footsteps of Alto, which won for three consecutive years. RACV’s survey reveals that the Suzuki Celerio not only beat the competition to be the cheapest new car to purchase and own, it was also the only model to drop

below the $100 barrier at $97.65 for average weekly ownership costs. Taking into account purchase price, depreciation, petrol prices, maintenance and insurance, the Celerio’s average cost was calculated at 33.85 cents per kilometre. The good news continued for Suzuki owners with the Swift taking out the running cost award for the light car segment in the same survey at $128.85 per week, making it the fifth cheapest overall.

A FOOT IN THE DOOR
You don’t have to sit back and wait for housing affordability to improve before you buy your first home. WORDS: Jemma Pearson
A
s a would-be first-home buyer you might be confused about the arguments surrounding housing affordability. Is it really just a case of working harder and saving better, as the treasurer would have us believe? Or are the media reports that say Australia is facing a housing affordability crisis correct? If so, you might be thinking there is little hope of ever getting into your first home. While house prices in Sydney and Melbourne are certainly squeezing out many first-time buyers from those markets, there are plenty of new buyers getting their feet in the door on the Sunshine Coast. And while you can’t do much about external market forces that control the property market – such as the availability of affordable homes and the prices of those homes – there are things you can consider to ensure you can, at some stage in the future, make it into your first home.
TOP TIPS FOR FIRST-HOME BUYERS: • Buying an investment property is a purely financial decision, but you 40 My Weekly Preview | July 17, 2015
40.indd 1
usually buy a home for lifestyle. If you can’t afford where you want to live though, how about renting in your dream suburb and buying elsewhere? If the rent you would pay to live in your favourite area is considerably less than your potential mortgage payments, it is well worth considering. And remember, there are tax advantages to buying an investment. It’s worth getting some financial advice before heading down this path. • Once you’ve squirrelled away a decent deposit, it’s time to talk to your bank manager or mortgage broker. It pays to shop around, even in the current market while interest rates are at historic lows. You’ll find that it’s not just rates that vary among different lenders, but fees and features. It’s going to be the biggest financial commitment you make, so it pays to take the time to get the best deal. • Do lots of research and ask lots of questions of property owners and investors. Go to plenty of open homes and auctions and get familiar with the process. This will ensure that when you
are ready to take the plunge, you are doing it with a wise head. • Consider current and future infrastructure projects in the area you are looking to buy in. The Sunshine Coast is home to some really exciting developments such as the proposed changes to the Maroochydore CBD and the hospital precinct in Kawana, and these will impact property developments and prices in the future. So consider how living near these will affect your lifestyle and your investment. On a smaller scale, homes near shops, schools and handy to major roads are also desirable. Right now you might not need to be near a school, but in a few years this might be a major bonus. • If you are ready to commit but there are no homes on the market that suit you, it’s worth getting a bit proactive. Chat to real estate agents about properties that might be coming onto the market in the future. It’s also worth keeping your eye out for rental properties that might be sitting vacant for a while – the owners might be open to considering offers
to offload an under-performing investment. • If you are still struggling to find a property in your price range, have you considered joining forces with a family member? Perhaps your cousin or sister is in the same boat, and if you pooled your deposit you could afford a decent property you could jointly own and live in. If you do decide to go down this path, be sure to have a really clear agreement from the outset on how costs are divided and what happens if one of you wants to sell in the future. • When looking at homes, look beyond the daggy carpets, overgrown back garden and outdated carport, and try to see how you can add value to the home in the future. This doesn’t mean conducting a full-scale renovation in your first year, but small updates over time that add value to your investment. Smaller homes on a decent-sized block are great because in the future you will have lots of space to add an extension. Older homes often have bigger rooms and good bones to create a dream house you can live in for years to come or sell in a few years for a profit. myweeklypreview.com.au

SURF REPORT
with MWP’s man in the water
Well, as it stands today Julian Wilson is looking good at J-Bay! Sadly, a few Brazilians are sneaking through as well – yep you guessed it, small waves. But bigger surf is coming! Now all you stand-up paddlers – be cool, and if you don’t know how to ride them yet, don’t paddle into a bunch of surfers and start practising your bottom turns. I witnessed some crazy stuff last week and while I grew up happy to dodge surf equipment in big surf, a lot of people don’t have my sense of humour. My tip for this weekend? A little squirrel told me about Noosa rivermouth! A great bank is up there at the moment. I may lose some friends over telling you, but it might be well worth a try. Also on Saturday A-Bay might be worth a stroll! Remember to take the zinc in case you want to surf in the nude! Let’s hope for an all-Aussie final in J-Bay!
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Quality whiting are taking worms and yabbies along Twin Waters banks and around Goat Island. Flathead will be on the drift from Maroochy bar to the motorway bridge on the northern bank using plastics and live bait. Find trevally and jew at the motorway bridge using pillies and mullet fillet, right on the top of the tide. Bream will be at Maroochy bar, but beware of the sand dredge during the day. SURF: Plenty of dart will be in the low-tide gutters along Kawana and Maroochy beaches with pippies best. Sand whiting will be taking beach worms from Mudjimba to North Shore. Find flathead at the Maroochy bar, and tailor in Pincushion area using pillies and poppers. OFFSHORE: Mixed reef fish are around the Blinker and to Murphy’s Reef. The southern end of Barwon Banks will be firing for pearl perch, snapper, moses perch and parrot. Try drifting in the deeper water. FRESHWATER: Noosa River will be returning small bass from Kin-Kin to Harry’s Hut with medium divers and live shrimp best. Lake Macdonald has golden perch, bass and Mary River cod trolling deep-diving lures just off the weed.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Love, family and duty are linked, so accept what you need to do. When it comes to a troubled relationship, there’s no substitute for sitting down and have a long chat with the person involved. If you see things from their point of view, it will certainly help.
GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] The early week Sun/Saturn trine helps ground your flighty mind. If you have to speak in front of a group of people make sure you’ve done your homework and have something substantial to say. Saturn also urges you to be more responsible about your physical wellbeing.
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Expect mood swings, as you oscillate between stability and exuberance. A steady approach sees a relationship improve early in the week. Don’t undo your good work on the weekend though, when moods could upset the apple-cart all over again.
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Stop running around in a fluster and focus on stabilising a family situation. The Sun/ Saturn trine also sees others viewing you in a more serious way. Plus DIY and real estate projects are favoured, as you tackle things in a methodical fashion.
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] There’ll be plenty of phone calls, emails, texts, tweets and snail mail early in the week – mostly to do with work. Your mind is at its disciplined best as you multi-task like a pro, plus handle a perceived communication problem in a positive and professional way.
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Librans – you love to shop til you drop! But this week, when you’re thinking about making a purchase, don’t rush – take your time. You may find you really don’t want it after all. With Venus moving backwards [from Saturday until September 6] expect some romantic hiccups.
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] The planets are giving you a power surge, but don’t overdo it! You’re confident but that must be tempered with a consultative approach, humility and a willingness to learn. It would be best not to pre-plan things on the weekend, as people will be unpredictable.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] It will be difficult to get the ducks all lined up at work this week but, if you are patient and persistent [not your Sagittarian strengths] then you’ll make slow but steady progress. Being extra cooperative with colleagues, clients or customers could also lead to long-term rewards.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Stop worrying about the world and just get on with things Capricorn! A combination of Saturnine productivity and sparky creativity will really take you places early in the week. In fact, the harder you work – and the more creatively you think – the luckier you’ll be.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Business and financial transactions are favoured. Aquarians prefer to improvise but, the more organised you are early in the week, the better. Plus, if you take the time to nurture friendships and network with colleagues, you’ll reap the rewards in the long-run.
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] You need to be clear and straightforward in your dealings with others. Communicating with a child, teenager or friend should be pleasant and productive early in the week, as the Sun and Saturn boost motivation and steady overblown emotions.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Saturn settles your fiery energy early in the week, as you take some sensible and wellconsidered action. Then the Sun and Mercury both move into your self-expression zone mid-week, so it’s the perfect time to connect with your creative muse.

THE LAST WORD
KEEPING UP WITH THE COOL KIDS Nothing ages you like using out-of-date language, writes Richard O’Leary.
I
was at home recently looking after my two sick sons, desperately trying to think of something to distract them from their coughs and sniffles. There had already been a couple of meltdowns and I wasn’t coping particularly well. So I suggested we go and get a couple of videos. Blank looks from my boys accompanied a shudder from me, as I remembered teasing my dad about calling the radio the wireless. “I mean DVDs.” Looks of joy despite the puffy eyes and blocked noses. It got me thinking about all the other words we use which have no relevance these days. When was the last time you actually rolled up a car window? But I bet you still tell your kids to do it when the window is down and the rain has just started. If you are like me you may not have ‘dialled’ a phone number recently but
it you would need a video tape. And we get back to where I started. I realise that using these terms may not be cool, although using the word cool is also probably not cool, but I guess it just represents another stage in my life where I have started to shed the lightweight clothes of youth to put on the heavy old jumper of my middle years. At least my kids haven’t worked it out yet… or so I thought. My six-year-old came up to me a little while ago, wide-eyed and innocent of face and said, “Daddy, you’re so COOL.” “Thanks buddy,” I said, “I appreciate that.” And I really did. But I really shouldn’t have interrupted. With a smirk and giggle starting to escaped, he continued. “Yeah, a Constipated Overweight Old Lady.” roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
you have probably said you did. You may also have also ‘hung up’ on someone, although you probably just clicked a button or tapped a smart screen. There are a few more words I don’t use but I’ve heard others say. Using the ‘clicker’ to change the channels on the TV, referring to TV as ‘the tube’ and
“Using the word cool is also probably not cool…” they’re not talking about YouTube, or ‘taping’ something when you are really talking about recording it. And you may tell someone to ‘rewind’ a movie on Netflix when there’s nothing to rewind anymore – to actually rewind
