OUR STORY

My Weekly Preview is a high-quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.
t may sound a bit macabre but my wife regularly reminds me that she would like her organs donated when she dies. But shouldn’t we all be having this chat? Our cover story this week is about getting the conversation started, after all, one organ and tissue donor can transform the lives of 10 or more people. Also this week, we take a look at the latest version of the car whose original was described as “fallen from space”, in My Opinion, Sami Muirhead talks baby names and Carolyn Tucker looks at the Bronwyn Bishop brouhaha. My Body reveals the coolest new haiwr colour – bronde (that’s not a typo), and we also take a look at how the new investment rules of banks are hurting young buyers. And before I go, I had a lunch with some fellow journos recently and the conversation turned to our national anthem and the word ‘girt’, and how it would be impossible to use in a sentence in any of our stories within the next seven days. I beg to differ. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT
CALIFORNIA MAN
Former US Olympic rower Chip McKibben has lived in Buddina since 2002 and is co-owner and director of Bulletproof People, a Sunshine Coast business that develops resilient behaviour in people and organisations to create a positive and productive environment. FIRST JOB?
much dirt. You’re feeding parking metres; you don’t have to pay to go to the beach here. People have a wonderful sense of village and really great camaraderie. They look out for each other and stand up for each other.
A deckhand on the tourist boats that navigated around the Newport Beach, California waterways. The best job I have ever had, so far. I was 14 and it was a wonderful way to meet girls and spend the day out in the sun.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST?
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES?
I have two. The Bison Bar in Nambour and anywhere on the Maroochy River in a rowing shell. The Bison Bar has an old classy elegance, like you might find in a 1970s, 1980s bar with martinis, comfortable lounge chairs, a lot of acoustic sets. It’s a real low key bar with great tapas.
My gorgeous wife, Lisa, sons Finn, 11, and Jack, 10. The dog, Sparkles, is too spoiled to mention.
FIRST VEHICLE? A boat named ‘The Dirty’. A wood skiff with an old British Seagull outboard.
WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST?
FAVOURITE BOOK? The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown, about the University of Washington 1936 Olympic Rowing Team.
Before they get to unpack their bags, I take them down to Buddina Beach. It helps to acclimatise anyone from a long plane or car ride. The trip home requires a stop at La Balsa Café for a coffee.
WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW? Selfish, Scared and Stupid by Dan Gregory and Kieran Flanagan.
WHAT ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT THESE DAYS?
FAVOURITE SONG? Any song by Lenny Kravitz and Stairway to Heaven (Kennedy Center Honours 2012 version).
CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT? The day I was introduced to the sport of still water rowing. After 32 years, I still love what it does for me and I am an active member of the Sunshine Coast Rowing Club. It challenges me physically and mentally and keeps me healthy. I’m still chasing that perfect stroke.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? Thirteen years in December. I moved here from Newport Beach, California.
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE? Because I travel a great deal with Bulletproof People, I would like more direct flights to Sydney and Melbourne.

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? I feel that the people who live on the Sunshine Coast value the same things I do: a strong sense of community, a safe place to raise our kids and natural beauty everywhere you look. You can’t stand up on Point Cartwright, look up and down the coastline and deny that we are a fortunate lot. When I came to the Sunshine Coast the first place my wife took me was Mooloolaba Surf Club. I rode some waves with Cameron Meninga and it was such a great introduction to Coast life. It was like Newport Beach in 1970 – not a lot of people, that baby powder sand that falls out of your hand. If you go to Manhattan Beach or LA and grab the sand it sticks to your hand because there’s so
My company is working with an organisation called Family Inclusion Support located in Nambour. They provide support for families that care for a child with a disability. This pro bono work is the most important contract that we have. Caring for a child with a disability is a massive undertaking and we want to make their lives a bit easier. We’ve designed a resilience program, working with the caregiver or family to future-proof them. It’s exactly the program we roll out with big companies like Lend Lease and Mirvac.
IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Give your Mom and Dad a break, they are making it up as they go along, just like you.
NRL OR AFL AND WHO DO YOU FOLLOW? After living here for only five months I was taken to Origin Game 1 in May 2003 at Suncorp Stadium I have been hooked on the NRL and the Broncos ever since.

A LITTLE GIVE AND TAKE
If you’d say yes to receiving a life-saving organ transplant, have you also said yes to becoming an organ donor? WORDS: Candice Holznagel

ark Walters stares at the ceiling watching each fluorescent light pass by as he is wheeled down the hallway of the Princess Alexandra Hospital. His brain does not compute what his eyes see. Instead, it focuses on the nervous energy pumping through his body. As the theatre doors loom closer, Mark’s nerves are tingling. He knows the stakes are high. His wife Ally is anxiously awaiting his safe return. He is also acutely aware that his daughter Melody Chaussende, who too is lying on a hospital bed, is relying on the success of the surgery ahead. The doors swing open and the team of doctors are relaxed, chatting about things as average as the score of the weekend’s football game; today’s weather; their plans for that evening. It eases Mark’s concerns and allows him to centre his thoughts on the reason he is here. At last, the specialised team of surgeons can begin their delicate work – focusing on one thing only, retrieving Mark’s kidney successfully. The transplant team at Brisbane’s PA 12 My Weekly Preview | August 7, 2015

hospital has conducted hundreds of surgeries, their nimble fingers and intelligent minds, performing miracles. And it really is nothing short of just this – a miracle, the gift of life and the greatest gift any human being can give another. Mark’s kidney is ensuring the health of his 32-year-old daughter. Without it, Melody – a wife and mother to a threeyear-old boy – faces a bleak future. The operation is a success and both the donor and recipient know they are one of the lucky families. There are 1600 Australians on the organ transplant list waiting for their miracle. At least one of them dies each week. Kidneys are the most needed organ. Thankfully for Melody, who was diagnosed with a malfunctioning kidney as a child, her father was a suitable donor. “As she grew, they always talked about it (a transplant) in terms of years,’’ Mark explains. “She grew up, got married and had her son Ben… she started declining so suddenly in the past 12 months. “At a certain point they started looking around within close family.

“I look in the mirror and see the scar on my tummy but I don’t feel any different at all”
I checked out compatible. “As a dad, what else would you do? In the end it’s lovely to see her without bags under her eyes, to see her playing with Ben and laughing. “I look in the mirror and see the scar on my tummy but I don’t feel any different at all.’’ On the same evening that this father and daughter are in hospital recovering, less than 100 kilometres north, 24-yearold Kate McColm-Fulton is undergoing her usual Monday night routine. At 8.30pm she arrives at Caloundra Hospital and within the hour she is hooked up to a dialysis machine. For the next eight hours she will dialyse in order to cleanse her blood of toxins. The university student is on a nocturnal, self-care treatment plan three nights a week. It has been three years since Kate was diagnosed with the rare autoimmune disease Goodpasture syndrome and she is still patiently waiting for the day she receives the call that will forever change the course of her life. Unfortunately, she does not have the option of a live donor – her mother was not a match. myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY
It’s a bittersweet reality. In order for Kate to live her life, another human being – a stranger – has to say goodbye to theirs. There is no knowing who this person will be – someone’s mother, someone’s sister; but long after their soul leaves this earth their selfless donation will ensure Kate’s future. “It’s up to the universe,’’ she says in her softly spoken tone. “There are more people waiting for kidneys than any other organ. The wait list average is four years. “You’re only given in life what you can handle. This has given me a lot of empathy for other people in this situation and for people who can’t have dialysis. “Dialysis can be done long term. It’s not the ideal situation, but it’s an option.’’ Through tears, Kate tells of the drain her illness has placed on her family, and partner Errol. “From the beginning Errol’s support has really been unwavering. “He has given me not only an infinite amount of love and support, but also a sense of normality when my life is far from that.’’ She doesn’t want to be a “burden’’ any longer, she wants to travel the globe and live a regular life. It’s not much to ask for from the girl who spent her 21st birthday in hospital undergoing initial treatment that included chemotherapy tablets. Despite her battle, Kate is adamant the message isn’t about her struggle, or even her personal need for an organ donor. For her, it’s about opening up the doors of communication and answering the question: do you want to be an organ donor? “It’s about the wider community of people waiting for transplants,’’ Kate says. “Before any of this happened to me, I didn’t realise how many lives were affected on a daily basis. “There needs to be a lot more awareness about organ donation. People need to start that dialogue.’’ In 2014, 1117 Australians received an
organ transplant as a result of the generosity of 378 donors whose families agreed to donation at the time of their loved one’s death. In Australia, the final decision is always made by the family despite their loved one’s wishes. It is a situation that has sparked debate in recent years, particularly since the launch of the Australian Organ Donor Register in 2000, which is the only national register for people to record their decision about becoming a
launched in 2009 and more than 90 per cent of families consent to donating if their loved one is on the register. However, only one per cent of people who die in hospital are suitable as a donor, as donation of major organs is only possible from a person who is dying in intensive care and on life support. What’s more, you are 10 times more likely to require a transplant than you are to become a donor. Sunshine Coast-based donation specialist nurse Shona McDonald says
FAST FACTS: One organ and tissue donor can transform the lives of 10 or more people 1600 Australians are waiting for a transplant 1117 people received an organ transplant in 2014 49 per cent of Australians do not know the donation decision of their loved ones 76 per cent of Australians are willing to become organ and tissue donors. HOW TO REGISTER
Kate McColm-Fulton has dialysis at Caloundra Hospital three times a week donor after death. In Queensland, the ability to register your decision on your driver’s licence finished in 2005. The register enables DonateLife medical staff to verify a person’s decision 24 hours a day, seven days a week and inform relevant families. The work of the DonateLife team throughout Australia is tireless yet in May, Assistant Health Minister Fiona Nash ordered an investigation into the program because transplant rates had not increased as quickly as hoped. The audit will conclude this month, with results expected in coming months. Investigation aside, existing figures support the work of DonateLife. There has been a 53 per cent increase in organ donors since the program
families who have discussed and know the donation decision of their loved ones are more likely to say yes. With this week being celebrated as DonateLife Week, there is no better time than now to raise the issue with family. McDonald says the topic is difficult, but it’s important to talk about it. “We need the community to have that chat about donation,” she says. “It’s amazing what one human being can give to another. “We have a lot of feedback from families who have donated and the feedback you get is it’s something positive that has come out of a really tragic situation. “It can stop another family from sitting in the ICU and saying goodbye to a loved one.’’
In Queensland, the ability to register your decision on your driver’s licence ended in 2005. To register consent, you must fill out the required paperwork available from Medicare or your GP’s office. You will then receive confirmation from DonateLife. It is important to sign and return the document to finalise your consent. Most importantly, you need to tell your family of your decision and ask them to honour your wish. Donation won’t proceed without your family’s consent. Almost any one can donate their organs and tissue. While your age and medical history will be considered, you shouldn’t assume you are too old, too young or not healthy enough.

500 JOBS UP FOR GRABS AT THE JOB SHOW
L
ove them or loathe them, at some point most people have sat through a job interview. Now those harrowing interview questions will give one person the chance to win a Go Pro Hero 4 and photography training session. The Worst Job Interview Ever competition has been launched in conjunction with The Job Show. To be held on August 20 at TAFE’s Mooloolaba campus, already more than 300 job seekers and 37 private and public sector employers have registered to participate. The Job Show director Kris McCue says the event will be different to the usual careers expo. “We wanted to make it engaging. “Jobs are a serious issue, unemployment is a serious issue but there is room there to have fun and get people engaged.’’ One way of doing this is through the competition, McCue says. Entrants must submit a 60- to 90-second video clip re-enacting their worst job interview before August 17 to be in the running.
In addition to the competition, there will also be a $6000 TAFE scholarship up for grabs at the event. “We are really trying to engage young people,’’ McCue says. “Often a lot of career expos are about getting jobs, finding a uni course. This is about immediate impact stuff… about how many jobs are available on the day.’’ The Job Show will be the largest one-stop-shop of current and upcoming
job vacancies on the Sunshine Coast, with 500 actual opportunities to be advertised on the day. Some of the region’s largest employers will be on display including Sunshine Coast Council, Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service, Youi, Novotel Twin Waters, Auto & General and Stellar. McCue says the event isn’t aimed only at unemployed people but for
jobseekers at all levels ranging from those looking to find their first job to people wanting to change industry. “There will be workshops on the day to directly target people and also employers to align with their job interests,’’ he adds. The council is sponsoring the show and Mayor Mark Jamieson says it is a golden opportunity for job seekers of all ages. “The Job Show supports the Sunshine Coast Regional Economic Development Strategy (REDS) that aims to triple the size of our economy to $33 billion over the next 20 years and increase the number of jobs in our seven high value industries from 59,000 to 100,000,’’ Jamieson says. “Already, there are a high proportion of job seekers who’ve registered for The Job Show expressing interest in the health industry, which is encouraging because it’s the fastest growing of our seven high value industries on the Sunshine Coast.” For more information on the event or the Worst Job Interview Ever competition visit thejobshow.com.au.

HI-TECH TEXTBOOK
The school project that has gone global. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw
S
iena Catholic College grade 10 student Shaun McAnally is in the spotlight after creating an interactive iBook on Australian indigenous culture that has attracted worldwide attention. In 2014, McAnally and six students on the school’s indigenous committee were set a task by then Campus Minister, Esther de Schone: how could digital media make learning about indigenous people better? McAnally, a fan of new technologies, came up with the iBook idea and with his team, spent six months outside school hours to bring it to fruition. The result is Inside the World of Indigenous Culture, a stunning iBook that has been downloaded more than 1500 times from as far afield as Europe, Canada and the US. “I originally came up with the idea to do an iBook because I thought it was a really powerful medium,” says McAnally. “As my position was to get the project moving, I had to learn how to use the program, iBooks Author by Apple. It allows you to make books from a template and you’re able to include content you’ve
found – different snippets from books, music, videos – and combine it all into one package.” McAnally and the committee consulted representatives from the local Gubbi Gubbi people to decide which subjects to include. “Quite a few times we had to rewrite certain parts of the book that weren’t accurate from someone’s perspective,” he says. “ We didn’t want to represent someone in a way that wasn’t respectful for them. It was time consuming, but worth it.” The iBook, which is available for free from the iBookstore, explores the themes of diversity, art, culture, the Dreamtime, language as well as food and recipes by chef Mark Olive. Chapters on wars, the Stolen Generations, ritual, recreation, music, astronomy, health, education, medicine, poetry and writing, indigenous medicine and cultural preservation will be added periodically. The book attracted the interest of Apple and was featured on the front page of the iBookstore, McAnally says.
“Recently we had Apple reps from Brisbane come down to Siena Catholic College to talk to us about how to work on the book in the future and how to improve it. They were excited it was done by a bunch of students.” “Our whole committee was so happy when Apple gave it the green light and put it on the Apple bookstore.” While the book was a team effort, it was McAnally’s brainchild and he was the driving force behind the book, says Bill Kelly, Year 10 Pastoral Leader. “The word I would use to describe
McAnally is ‘passionate’,” says Kelly. “He really drove the project, he didn’t need any pushing or prodding from any of the adults in the school, he just got stuck in and did it and it was all voluntary.” McAnally says the books works well for the subject matter because it captivates the imagination far more than a traditional book ever could. “Now that the stress of publishing the first edition is over, I am extremely gratified with the reaction of people who have had the opportunity to read it.”

MY OPINION
WHAT’S IN A NAME?
HIGH LEVEL HYPOCRISY
Sami Muirhead is a fan of unusual baby names, but draws the line at Guru, Boss and Generous.
The electorate won’t cop tax hikes while pollies live it up, writes media, politics and communication specialist Carolyn Tucker.
L
et me make a confession straight up: my husband and I are quite partial to an unusual baby name. We have three children with names that are not run-of-the-mill. We have Avalon (our daughter was named after the house we were married in down in Tasmania), Nixon (it was my mother’s maiden name) and August (the little fellow was born on the Horse’s birthday). So I understand wanting your child to have a unique name. The Jolie-Pitts were one of the first celebrity families to spark a trend in unusual baby names. However, most of us are not as hot and cool as Lara Croft and do not go home to Brad Pitt to hang out at their French chateau. You see they have an unfair ‘cool’ advantage where they are able to pull off most baby names. For us mere mortals, there is a fine line when we are naming our little ones between edgy and plain strange. There is a new list out of unusual Australian baby names that really exist and I will let you be the judge which side they fall. One baby in our nation is actually called Unique. It is as unique as one can get. Other names on the list for little boys include Arrow, Best, Bless and Boss. I hope Boss is a strong little guy when it comes to personality, because you could not have a wimpy guy named Boss. It sounds to me like a boxer’s name. Then there’s Brave, Einstein, Fury and Godgive. They
sound like a secret spy gang who will save the world. From here the list gets super strange and nouns start to be confused with adjectives. Guru, Monarch, Riot, Rampage, Spartan, Tiger and Trust are real monikers. They all sound like a lead role in a Rambo movie with lots of bad acting and worse story lines.
“There is a fine line when naming our little ones between edgy and plain strange” The female names are just as creative. We have Bambi, Diva, Fairy and Generous. Poor Generous. She is going to count down the days until she turns 18 and can legally change her name. My favourite in the list is Hallowed-Belle. It sounds gorgeous to say. It rolls off the tongue. But so does How Now Brown Cow and we are not calling kids that are we? Also on the list are Infinity, Island, Matron, Soverign, Tenacity and Twinkle. They sound like future Spice Girl band names. My personal favourite name is Vegas. Whatever happens in Vegas should never be named after it. For more from Sami go to twomadrabbits.com or you can hear her on Mix FM.

I
’m sure I wasn’t alone in noting the irony of our political leaders discussing options to cover rising costs, including raising the GST and increasing the Medicare levy, while the former Speaker’s exorbitant expense claims were dominating the headlines. Bronwyn Bishop’s decision to splash more than $5000 of our cash on a helicopter from Melbourne to Geelong to attend a Liberal Party fundraiser lit a fuse that was impossible to extinguish. Her initial refusal to apologise for this ‘error of judgment’ only encouraged journalists to dig deeper. Almost every day we were treated to another tale of Mrs Bishop living the high life courtesy of the taxpayer and our blood boiled at the gross hypocrisy of her behaviour. Those who attempted to justify her actions by mumbling that ‘they all do it’ and her claims were ‘within the guidelines’ only poured fuel on the fire. She had no option but to resign, but her extravagance and arrogance also inflicted significant damage on the Government and the reputation of politicians generally. Any member of parliament who thinks Mrs Bishop’s departure from the Speaker’s chair is the end of the matter should think again. We’re mad as hell and we’re not going to take it anymore. There is general agreement that we need to make changes to our tax system if we’re to adequately fund future services and avoid ballooning debt. There is broad understanding that
we have an ageing population, rising health costs, a growing number of pensioners, a shrinking percentage of the population contributing income tax and a need for more investment in education and infrastructure for Australia to remain competitive. There are difficult decisions to be made and it’s a safe bet we will ultimately be paying more of our hard-earned to the government. Politicians have no chance of convincing their constituents to swallow this bitter pill unless they can first demonstrate they are capable of respecting public money by reforming not only the guidelines but their attitude to entitlements. Apparently we’ve reached a point where we need to spell this out for some of those elected to represent our interests. The public purse is not a bottomless pit to drain for any purpose deemed acceptable via some creative reading of the rules. The question should not be: ‘Can I get away with this under the guidelines?’ but rather: ‘What is the benefit for my electorate and/or the nation?’ The Prime Minister has promised to overhaul the rules and it will be a challenge to implement sufficient change to satisfy a seething electorate without ruffling his colleagues’ feathers. Nonetheless, Tony Abbott needs to deliver without delay. The community’s patience has been severely tested and it will not tolerate much more.

DITA MAKES HER MARK
SPOT ON
If your skin is prone to inflamed spots, look for products that contain salicylic acid, which helps skin shed cells and unclog pores. Just remember, it’s a no-no if you are pregnant. Try Garnier Pure Active 2 in 1 Anti-spots Roll-On, $12.95, which helps remove spots and reduce breakouts while offering tinted coverage. Natio’s Acne Clear Daily Purifying Body Cleanser, $9.95, works to minimise blemishes and acne on the body. Shiseido’s IBUKI Multi Solution Gel, $55, minimises the appearance of acne, breakouts, dryness and visible pores.
American burlesque dancer, model and entrepreneur Dita Von Teese is now a published author, after the release of her guide Your Beauty Mark. Von Teese says in the book she explores the power of glamour rather than offering a guide on personal routines. “There are so many beauty books on the market that tell you how to do natural, pretty makeup – very tasteful makeup – and I never really could relate to that,” she says. “My book is for people who enjoy breaking the beauty rules and changing them.”

the way we see ourselves now more than ever, based on how many ‘likes’ we get? It’s not until we become aware that it’s not about how others see us, but how we see ourselves, that we allow ourselves to be the person we know we are. It’s then that others will see you for who you are, and you will be accepted. There are many causes of low self-esteem, including depression, poor relationships, and poor health. Improving your health, brain function and vitality has an amazing effect on your mood, and the way you look at yourself. Make the choice to make the changes you need to be the person you really are. hy do so many struggle with a low self-esteem? They ask, am I good enough? Will people like me? Why don’t I fit in? You might first think I’m referring to children and teenagers, though you’d be surprised at how many adults continue to feel this way through life. Is there a reason? Children begin to ask these questions during early school years. It’s interesting to watch the language and the way their interaction develops over the years around communicating with each other, and learning about themselves, by gauging other’s reactions to them. By the teenage years, it becomes all about comparing themselves to each other, their clothes, friends, and of course, who takes the best selfie, with social media quickly becoming the way in which we feel accepted or rejected by our peers, shaping

3 DAYS IN SHANGHAI Old meets new in China’s most exotic metropolis. By Katie Wright
I
t is 8am on a Friday in Jing’An – the central district of Shanghai, packed with gleaming hotels and shopping malls – and the pace is frenetic. I am trying to cross a busy main road but even super-sized traffic lights, a green man and a zebra crossing hold no sway against drivers who seem to see pedestrians as an annoyance best ignored. I make it across unscathed and head for Jing’An Park, a leafy haven where pensioners are huddled around mahjong boards and teens are attempting to get a drone camera into the air. It is 20 years since I have been to China and, boy, things have changed. Australians are among those who can now stay in China for up to 72 hours without a visa. So how do you maximise a three-day stay in this vast metropolis? While I could happily gawp at the stunning view from my 17th floor room at the Puli Hotel all day, I am keen to explore old-school Shanghai. So after my stroll, I make a beeline for Tian Zi Fang, where the
narrow streets are lined with low rise ‘lane’ houses built in the 1930s. I then make my way over to the picturesque Yu Garden to watch koi carp and turtles paddling in jade green ponds, as I walk across the Zigzag Bridge to reach Huxinting Teahouse. Later that night, I head out in search of the one sight I am most excited about. Ever since I learnt that Shanghai’s space-age skyscrapers were used to represent futuristic Los Angeles in the Spike Jonze film Her, I have been dying to experience the vertiginous views myself. The best place to do so? It has got to be the Bund, the wide riverside boulevard opposite the Pudong skyline that is to Shanghai what Southbank is to London. I stroll along the riverfront as the sun is setting, and by the time I have finished my first mojito at the seventh floor POP terrace bar at the top of Three On The Bund, Pudong is lit up in all its neon glory. Next morning, I take a street food tour. We wander through the avenues of the historic French Concession, stopping to
Aerial view of Shanghai at night from the Jin Mao Tower sample all kinds of delicious dumplings. My favourite are the soft white steamed buns filled with sweet black sesame paste. I spend the afternoon walking off my enormous lunch and perusing the works of local artists in the cool M50 art district, before heading back to the Bund for dinner and one last glimpse of that irresistible vista. STAYING THERE:
Shooting up 23 storeys, the Puli Hotel and Spa in Jing’An offers spectacular views across the city. Beyond rows of bamboo, the non-stop buzz of Shanghai subsides and the Long Bar and terrace attract locals in need of a cocktail after a hard day’s shopping at one of the area’s many malls. RED FLAGS FOR CHINA’S MARKET Darryl Watt is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.
O
ver the past 12 months the Chinese stock market has soared, but a recent pullback has captured everyone’s attention. It is likely that the fall, together with other high profile events such as the Greek crisis, have contributed to weakness in the Australian stock market, and in particular, commodity related sectors. At this point though, Ord Minnett does not believe that the volatility in the Chinese market is a systemic problem and therefore we see the pullback as an opportunity to accumulate stocks. The volatility has been remarkable and the response of Chinese authorities to quell the volatility has been noteworthy. A major weakness of the Chinese stock market is the nature of the predominant
investor – retail investors focused on price momentum that have used margin lending to magnify gains. When confidence is lost and margin calls trigger selling, there is an insufficient base of institutional investors on the other side of the trade to support stock prices. That is why it has been necessary for policy makers to respond rapidly. The outlook for the Chinese stock market depends on several factors, including an easing in money market rates and stabilisation of the market through regulatory support. Each day the market falls, the probability of the bull market returning diminishes, although for the moment authorities have chosen to impose wide-ranging trading restrictions. Placing the troubles around the Chinese stock market into a broader perspective, the decline from the high of the stock market has an effect on the interpretation of economic data, primarily in the fact that it draws investors to look for economic weakness. But before getting too caught up in the
economic impact, it is important to remember that forecasters were not upgrading economic forecasts after the market added 150 per cent. Without policy responses, there was a concern that the drop in the stock market could evolve into a disorderly correction process, triggering spill over effects and broader financial instability including the banking sector. A healthy stock market is also a fundamental apparatus to promote direct financing and reduce reliance on debt funding. As to economic growth, real growth in China’s financial sector accelerated from 10 per cent in 2014 to 16 per cent in the first quarter of 2015. We estimate that the sector contributed 1.1 percentage points of the country’s seven per cent first-quarter GDP growth. An unchecked stock market collapse would undermine China’s stabilisation efforts. On the other hand, the wealth effect associated with the stock market
correction might be limited. The stock market rally prior to the correction did not appear to drive up consumption. Moreover, the market is still higher this year and certainly well above its position last year. WHAT’S ON
KARL S. WILLIAMS The guitar-slinging and banjo-wielding Karl S. Williams is heading to Maroochydore’s live music venue Solbar. Tipped to become one of the country’s most exciting artists, Williams is a Gold Coast songwriter who last year signed a record deal with Warner’s indie imprint Footstomp Music and shortly after released his debut album Heartwood. Williams continued the year by headlining two national tours and playing the most talked about showcase at Bigsound, which was validated by Rolling Stone magazine, which listed him in the top f ve artists to watch list. Described as an artist with a foot in the past and a thousand-yard stare into the future, Williams is reportedly one musician to follow. Karl S. Williams will perform at the Solbar on August 8. Tickets are available at oztix.com.
DRAMA QUEENS & KINGS Teenagers will bring drama to life on stage this weekend in what is being hailed a celebratory festival of performance. The Sunshine Coast Schools’ Drama Festival is underway, with competitors vying for a place in Saturday night’s f nal event at The Events Centre, Caloundra. All gold, platinum and adjudicators’ choice acts will perform at the f nal showcase.
The festival provides a platform to showcase school productions from across the Sunshine Coast and surrounding region within a supportive arts education community. Festival president and Kawana Waters State College drama teacher Ricki-Lee Bernhardt-Turpin says the festival aims to celebrate the creative performance work of students. “Drama has the potential to unify,’’ she says. “It can speak in many languages without a translator. The arts do not discriminate. The arts can lift us up. That’s pretty f ne in my world. “I am just so excited and really proud to offer this to our talented students.” The Sunshine Coast School’s Drama Festival showcase is on Saturday, August 8 at 7pm. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children. Visit theeventscentre.com.au

MY TIME
SEAFOOD LOVER Maroochy Surf Club chef Andrew Wishart shares some tips and tells us why he loves working with local produce. Q. What’s your favourite go-to meal at home? My favourite go-to meal has to be Asian marinated chicken wings and hoisin barbecue pork ribs. Q. What’s your favourite produce that you source locally? As local produce goes you can’t beat the local fresh king prawns with a delicious homemade cocktail sauce, fresh lime and a six-pack of Corona. Q. What’s the best advice someone ever gave you? The best advice my father ever gave me was, if all the worry in the world won’t fix something then it’s not worth worrying about. Easier said than done. Q. What’s the strangest meal request you’ve ever had? The most challenging meal request I have had was for the Jain diet. Jain is hard to prepare for. It’s for strict vegetarians that don’t eat anything that has not fallen off a vine or tree. Grapes, mangoes, lychees are okay, but potatoes, carrots and garlic are not because they are pulled out of the ground harming organisms surrounding them.
Q. What do you enjoy most about working on the Sunshine Coast? The best part about working on the Sunshine Coast is the view and the fantastic surf. Q. What task do you love being able to hand over to your apprentice? Some days I thank God for apprentices, especially when there are a lot of onions to cut. Q. Talk us through the process of creating a new dish? Creating a new menu item for me starts with the best produce, numerous tastings to achieve the correct balance of flavours and presentation then costing the completed dish. Q. What do you think Sunshine Coast diners are looking for? I feel that diners on the Sunshine Coast expect to see lots of local fresh seafood proudly promoted on the menu. Q. Last meal on earth? If I could choose my last meal on earth it would have to be a large platter of Alaskan snow crab and fresh local seafood.
Enjoy the million dollar river views and mouth watering food that won’t break the bank
Q. Piece of equipment you can’t live without? On my days off my favourite piece of equipment would have to be my slow cooker. I can start dinner at lunch time and forget about it and still feel like I’m taking the day off work. Slow cooked lamb shanks with a quick garlic mash potato, great time management for dinner parties. Q. Who is, or was, your inspiration? My inspiration at the moment comes after visiting my partner’s family in
Puerto Vallarta Mexico. My mother-inlaw cooks from home with such passion and pride producing food not just for the family but as a business to help support their way of life, producing delicious preserved fruits, cakes and sweets to the local community. Flags Bistro is open for lunch and dinner seven days, with a breakfast buffet on weekends.
HOLY FOLK Violin virtuoso, Attilla Sautov, will join SlavicAustralian musical project Ethnodelica in a unique performance at Maleny Community Centre next weekend. Instruments such as duclar, overtone f ute, Irish whistles, mandolin, bodhran, djembe, guitar, cello and piano will be showcased in a fabulous fusion of acoustic sound, ethnic and folk motifs. August 15 at 7pm and August 16 at 3pm. Tickets are $20 to $39 and are available at Maleny Visitor Information Centre or attillasautov.com.

KEEPING IT REAL A local restaurant has been voted best takeaway in Queensland by Menulog.
G
uiseppe ‘Joe’ Skok has pizza running through his veins. Born in Australia to an Italian-family, Skok has called on his European history – and the recipes of his ancestors – to build a career of all things tomato, cheese and pepperoni. Last month, the business he owns with wife Tamara, Italia Pizza & Pasta at Currimundi, was named the best takeaway restaurant in Queensland in the Menulog Tasty Takeaway Awards 2015. Skok grew up surrounded by pizzerias owned by many of his relatives. It is here he learned the tricks of the trade in making perfect pizza and pasta. “It’s about keeping everything the same from what I’ve learnt over the years,’’ Skok says. “It’s the same recipes, the same techniques. From the outset, our focus has been three things: authentic,
modern and delicious. “My wife Tamara is a qualified nutritionist and makes sure all ingredients are fresh and local.’’ Menulog spokesperson Julia Snabl says more than 5,500 restaurants competed in this year’s awards. “The awards have become the standout event of the takeaway industry,’’ she says. “The awards enable us to identify which takeaway restaurants are performing well. For the winners, it proves they are an integral and popular identity in their local community because they have won this people’s choice award.” Italia Pizza & Pasta is open for dinner from 4.30pm every day except Monday. Home delivery available.

poll of the cars of the 20th century, the DS finished third. One critic described it as a car that had “fallen from space”. Having disappeared for a third of a century after 1975, the DS brand was revived by Citroen a few years back. Naturally, the cars wearing it had a lot to live up to. Citroen says the DS brand “perpetuates those values of innovation and distinction” and “makes bold statements in terms of style, pleasure and refinement”. DS models now match most of Citroen’s everyday fleet of sedans and hatches, with DS3, DS4 and DS5 iterations for the matching C3, C4 and C5 models. The DS3 tested here is the baby of that bunch, based on the C3 hatchback, but blessed with unique design rather than just a cosmetic touch-up you will see in many of these premium brands. The DS3’s “shark fin” C-pillar is an homage to the design of the original DS. Citroen recently released an updated, restyled version of the DS3, which is now offered in a single-trim, premium-spec model that packs a lot of technology and luxury into a modestly sized package. wo letters have long occupied an exalted place in the Citroen family. For the French car maker, the letters DS are as important as Mercedes-Benz’s AMG, the M-Sport of BMW or the acronyms denoting the premium offshoots of many other brands.
The tradition originated 60 years ago with the launch of the original DS, a car many people would still instantly recognise, even if they did not know what it was. Its futuristic, swoopy lines and, of course, that unique hydropneumatic, self-levelling suspension that allowed it to raise and lower its ride height on
demand made it a legendary, unforgettably French institution. When the car was unveiled at the 1955 Paris Motor Show, more than 12,000 orders were placed on the first day. Its impact cannot be overstated, not only for the 1.5 million DS models sold during the 20 years it was on the market but also for the fact that, in a worldwide

braking, LED/Xenon headlights, dynamic rear view camera, tyre pressure monitors, auto headlights and wipers are all included in a package costing less than $34,000. Citroen says it has added $5000 worth of extra equipment to a car that is now priced $4000 lower than the previous model. That is despite it also receiving an all-new, turbo-charged petrol engine that enhances both performance and efficiency. While there is essentially only one DS3 model, it is possible to customise it to an almost unlimited degree, with 29 individual colour combinations (21 for the soft-top cabriolet) as well as more than 200 individual trim options. That is a good and bad thing. You see, the DS3’s interior is a bit of a mish-mash. Instruments are excellent but the centre stack is a bit confused and confusing. It is attractive enough, but lacks a bit in the functionality so demanded of small cars. There is also, surprisingly, no space in the centre console to accommodate a smartphone, surely a priority in this day and age. On the positive side, the DS3’s new
engine, a sharp 1.6-litre turbo, was developed in partnership with BMW. It enjoys similar outputs and technology to that found in a Mini Cooper S, including the same stop-start system that kills the engine when you are stopped at the lights (and when you
select neutral and depress the clutch in the six-speed manual version we tested). In fact, if the Mini were French instead of British, this is probably how it would look. The two cars are remarkably similar to drive, even though it is primarily only the mechanicals they have in common. The DS is beautifully sharp and balanced on the road, very Mini-like,
which is a high compliment indeed. Interior space is reasonably generous for what is, after all, a compact threedoor hatch. Rear-seat space is acceptable if not exactly capacious. The DS3 is a pretty looking thing, too, not the least because of the very high levels of finish and attention to detail heaped upon it by the folk at Citroen. French cars have often been something of a mystery to the Australian public, which is perhaps a bit suspicious of the often quirky styling and idiosyncratic design cues. But the truth is, the French are in many ways the equal of the Germans in the quality and engineering stakes, and the DS3 is a fair example. Put it all together and the DS is a distinctive and enjoyable machine. Is it destined to revive the brand’s iconic place in automotive history? Well, that might be asking a little too much.
CITROEN DS3
HOW BIG? A compact three-door hatchback, this is unlikely to double as a family machine. But access to the rear seats is well thought out and the front-seat passengers will be happily accommodated. HOW FAST? A newly upgraded 1.6-litre turbocharged engine delivers 121 kilowatts – more than enough to give this smart little machine some truly punchy performance. In sport mode it is even more potent. HOW THIRSTY? Official combined consumption is just 5.6L/100km, which is very good for a car with this much performance potential. HOW MUCH? Thanks to some aggressive pricing, the latest DS3 costs $33,990 plus on-roads despite enjoying lots more features than the model it replaces.

MW Group Australia has confirmed pricing and specification for the new BMW M3 ahead of its Australian launch later this year. Starting from $139,900 excluding on-road costs, the new BMW M3 shares design revisions common to the updated BMW 3 Series range. It now also includes more base equipment with the inclusion of a host of visual refinements and driver assistance systems. Repositioned in-line with its four-door
compatriot, the specification and pricing changes will also extend to the BMW M4 coupe and convertible, which now start from $149,900 and $161,900. Among the visual changes to the BMW M3 are the addition of full-LED rear tail lights in the brand’s classic L-configuration, adaptive LED headlights and twin-round LED daytime running lights. BMW Group Australia Head of Product and Market Planning, Shawn Ticehurst, says the updated range will heighten the appeal of the range.
he new Nissan NP300 Navara recently launched in Australia and New Zealand has stepped up to match a handful of its light commercial ute competitors achieving a five-star ANCAP safety rating. ANCAP, Australia’s leading car safety assessment group, says all Navara variants have achieved the accolade, performing well in the most recent round of testing. The vehicle has met 2015 five-star standards in physical crash performance and in the provision of key safety features and safety technologies. The Navara is sold with electronic stability control, electronic brakeforce distribution and emergency brake assist as standard across the range. Top tether anchorages for child restraints are standard for the three rear seats of dual cab variants but are not available in the king cab. ANCAP chief executive officer Nicholas Clarke says the organisation originally identified a failure in the Navara dual cab with the webbing loop
which routes the child restraint top tether. “Nissan developed an improved design of the webbing loop and ANCAP conducted a satisfactory follow-up crash test,’’ Clarke says. “ANCAP has been advised that all affected Navara models have been upgraded with the improved top tether routing.’’

THE RULES ARE CHANGING Not all property investors are being deterred by changes to investment lending.
D
espite the fact many of Australia’s banks are making sweeping changes to their investment lending policy and pricing, many potential investors are still keen to make their mark on the property market. New data from Mortgage Choice’s 2015 Investor Survey found 54 per cent of potential investors are still willing to follow through with with their investment plans despite the fact many lenders are actively making it harder for some investors to purchase property. Mortgage Choice chief executive officer John Flavell says it’s clear the majority of would-be investors still see property investment as a lucrative investment strategy and a clever way to future proof their wealth. “When we asked potential investors whether or not now was a good time to invest, more than 70 per cent said yes, which goes some way to explaining why so many potential investors are not deterred by the spate of pricing and policy changes being made by many of Australia’s lenders,” says Flavell. In recent weeks, many of Australia’s lenders have made some sweeping changes to their investment lending policies, including restrictions on maximum loan-to-value ratios, the removal of discretionary pricing on investment loans and increased floor rates for loan servicing. Over the past week or so, a number of Australia’s major lenders have also announced their
plans to increase their interest rates for investors, with one lender increasing its investor interest rates by 47 basis points. While these changes will impact all investors, Flavell says it is first-timers and mum and dad investors who are ultimately hardest hit. “Our data shows an increasing number of investors are actually gen Ys who are purchasing property for the first time. For many younger buyers, purchasing an investment property
before an owner-occupied property gives them the opportunity to purchase where they can afford while still living where they want. We should be encouraging these people to buy property, not hindering them at every turn. Unfortunately, the changes many of the lenders are making are putting these buyers off.” Data from the 2015 Investor Survey shows younger buyers are more likely to be affected by the recent spate of investment changes to policy and pricing. “While on average 54 per cent of investors said the changes wouldn’t affect their investment plans, the story was a little different for Gen Y buyers,” says Flavell. “Just 45 per cent of those born between 1980 and now said the investment changes wouldn’t affect their property plans, meaning most would be affected by the changes. Baby boomers, by comparison, were far less likely to be put off by the changes, with just 30 per cent saying any changes would affect their property investment plans. “If lenders are going to continue to make substantial changes to their investment lending policy and pricing, they need to consider who they are trying to impact. If the goal is to stop first-home buyers and mums and dads from purchasing investment properties, then mission accomplished. If lenders are just trying to curb their overall level of investment activity, then perhaps they should consider pulling other levers that will impact cashed-up investors and foreign investors.”

A good mood will improve your surf ng! So get pumped on some tunes and if you are struggling for ideas have a look at the YouTube tribute to the Foo Fighters from the small Italian town of Cesena - one of the coolest things you will see and hear! Just when you thought stand up paddle boards were annoying - try dirt bikes pulling down waves. Yep, Aussie motocross rider Robbin Maddison rigged up a bike that goes on water then pulled down a monster wave at Teahupoo - Tahiti. Incredible! FISHING REPORT
with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Silver bream are moving in over the Maroochy Bar on the bigger tides, with the banks around Goat Island returning quality f sh. There’s chopper tailor in the deeper water from Chambers Island to the Cod Hole using baby blue pillies. SURF: You can get tailor at Pincushion using small pillies with the quality improving just after dark. Whiting and dart are taking pippies along Maroochy Beach. Jew are chasing butter bream along Marcoola Beach. OFFSHORE: Most close in reefs are f ring for squire, sweetlip, pearl perch and red emperor. Check your sizing as there is a lot of undersized amongst the better sized schools. Squid, mullet f llet and plastics are proving the best baits. Southern end of the Barwon Banks is best for snapper and pearlies. FRESHWATER: Local impoundments seemed to have slowed down, but trips to Somerset Dam, up to Borumba or out to Boondooma will return bass and all species of perch on a mix of live shrimps, earthworms and deep diving lures. Don’t forget you freshwater lake impoundment permits, available at Maroochy Fishing World.

GEMINI (May 22-Jun 21) Someone tells you something in confidence but can a talkative twin be trusted to keep a secret? You’re in the mood to socialise up a storm, but don’t let convivial conversation degenerate into gratuitous gossip. Do your best to be diplomatic and discreet.
CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 23) Your social media profile really takes off over the next 13 months (and one of your posts could even go viral) as Jupiter blesses all forms of communication. So make sure you have plenty to say. It’s also a fabulous time to study, teach or travel.
LEO (Jul 24-Aug 23) Have you been worrying about money? Jupiter is jumping through your money zone for the next 13 months, so make the most of the opportunities. With the new moon, Venus and Mars all in Leo later in the week, it’s time for charismatic cats to shine.
VIRGO (Aug 24-Sep 23) Have you temporarily lost your vim and verve? The late week new moon period is the perfect time to revive your run down batteries, as you take a weekend break from your daily routine and escape somewhere quiet and private, where you can relax and rejuvenate.
LIBRA (Sep 24-Oct 23) The week proceeds slowly, but then Thursday’s sun/Uranus trine and Friday’s new moon help jolt many laidback Librans into spontaneous action. Contributing to a joint venture or a group project brings long-lasting satisfaction over the next 13 months.
SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22) It’s time to make plans and set goals for the future. And don’t make them too safe and sensible! Go for gold, as Jupiter helps you envision ambitious dreams over the next 13 months. The new moon urges you to boost your professional profile or kick-start a career.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21) Prepare for a big week when your ruling planet shifts into a different zodiac sign. On Tuesday, Jupiter (planet of prosperity) transits into earthy Virgo – and it also moves into your career house, which bodes well for a professional break coming your way.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20) Capricorns can easily get stuck in a rut, but this week Uranus shakes up your home life and encourages you to spring-clean and re-organise. You’ll feel fabulous when you finish! Jupiter also transits into your travel zone, so foreign shores beckon over the coming year.
AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19) Over the next year, Jupiter (planet of prosperity) moves through your ‘money-fromothers zone’. So some lucky Aquarians will benefit from an inheritance, loan, financial partnership, divorce settlement, insurance claim, superannuation pay-out or bumper tax return.
PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20) Are you feeling lost at sea in a quagmire of possibilities? This week Jupiter shifts into sensible Virgo, which will help you be more focused. Fabulous fantasies and wild imaginings are fine, but it’s imperative that you finally find your true calling; follow it; and stick to it.

TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21) Over the next 13 months, many bulls will take up a hobby; start a romance; go on holiday; or welcome a new addition to the family. Creative projects are also favoured. This week is a terrific time to tackle overdue chores and projects, plus spend time with a child in your life.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 20) Jupiter jumps into your wellbeing zone on Tuesday, which is good news for your health over the next 13 months. Though you’ll have to be disciplined. If you overdo your food intake and underdo exercise, then it could lead to weight problems.

THE LAST WORD
BOO TO BOOING How the footy fans feel is not the point in the Adam Goodes controversy, writes Richard O’Leary.
S
ixty-eight years ago a young African-American named Jackie Robinson broke the colour barrier in American sports when he was chosen to start at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers. For his first season efforts he was named rookie of the year. He went on to help his team win the baseball World Series in 1955, and was named an All-Star six times. His career was supposed to be a watershed in sport. A breakthrough against racism on the field, court or course. But the reality is even in his own playing days he was jeered and insulted. It was so commonplace that his contract included a clause which required him to turn the other cheek when he was vilified. Thankfully the world has moved on since then – or has it? Some critics of Goodes claim he is heckled because he takes dives to get
free kicks (he’s not in the top 100 players for free kicks this year) not because he has consistently taken a stand against racism. I’m not so sure. I need to be clear on this next point. I’m not saying everyone who boos Goodes is a racist. I don’t believe that. I think it has become a ‘thing’ to do, and most people have been swept away by the momentum. Unfortunately along the way, the booing for whatever reason, has validated the views of the minority out there who are racists. Goodes has been singled out from the start of every game to the finish for nearly a year now. His treatment is unparalled in Australian sporting history. Some commentators say Goodes is playing the victim card and he shouldn’t worry about it when he’s called an “ape”, “King Kong” or told to “go back the zoo.”
Surely in modern Australia we don’t expect a former Australian of the Year and a great of one of our most popular sports to adopt the same approach as Jackie Robinson all those years ago. The most insightful commentary I’ve seen on this subject has come from rugby league superstar Johnathan Thurston. “He [Goodes] feels as though the boos are racially (motivated) towards him, that’s the difference. “Paul Gallen, every time he plays in Queensland he gets heavily booed…if he came out and said that he feels that that is racially booing him, I’d urge our fans to stop that.” And that’s the point isn’t it? If the target of the booing feels like it’s racism, it needs to stop. Let’s call full-time on this issue, Goodes deserves better, and we are better than what this booing suggests. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
