OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high-quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.
ow far would you go to lend a helping hand? Some Sunshine Coasters are pushing the limits when answering that question, as you’ll discover in this week’s cover story. You’ll get to meet some inspirational people whose compassion knows no borders. Another local who gets a kick out of giving is Brett Mills, who is better known as one of the region’s biggest car dealers. Unable to provide a free car to a charity every other week, he came up with a novel way to raise funds and help kids. My Opinion is a great read this week; Sami Muirhead talks about sibling rivalry while Bill Darby says the council can’t rely on “trust us” to get its way. In My Body, there’s some good tips for blokes who want to look their best, while Cyndi O’Meara let’s you in on the secret of a healthy breakfast in My Life. And in property we look at the best way to sell your house – auction or private treaty? The answer could save you many thousands of dollars. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT
LIFE’S A BEACH
Moffat Beach surfer Al Hing is an icon of the Sunshine Coast surfing industry. FIRST JOB?
WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION TO THE NOW LEGENDARY MICK FANNING SHARK ATTACK?
My first job was working for my dad in the family hotel in Brisbane. We owned the Highway Motel at Rocklea. I learnt a lot about people and practical business skills that uni can’t teach you. Dad had been in pubs all his life, so it was all second nature to me.
Like everyone, I was just so shocked that it happened and that it happened live. It’s every surfer’s worst nightmare but it was the best result of all time. He was so lucky. It was a feel-good story and of course Julian – who is a family friend of ours – it was such a brave act for him to paddle and try to assist.
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . Myself and four grown-up children.
FIRST CAR?
WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST?
A canary yellow VW superbug. It was all an 18-year-old surfer needed.
I’d show them the whole Coast, from Caloundra to Noosa, up the beach to Double Island Point and Rainbow Beach and a drive up the range to Montville and Maleny.
FAVOURITE BOOK? The Hobbit when I was young. Lots since, but I do like Phil Jarratt’s books on the surfing industry. Salts and Suits is a favourite.
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
FAVOURITE SONG?
Better roads. We’ve been discovered so it’s getting harder to go anywhere quickly.
Something from JJ Cale or Tony Joe White. IMAGE: CARLYLOOYAH.COM.AU
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN? From my parents – don’t judge a book by its cover. Work hard but enjoy it. Be fair with everyone.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE COAST? Moffat Beach. It’s a great place to live, surf and hang out.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? I’ve lived on the Sunshine Coast for 35 years permanently, but grew up on the beach in Hastings Street, Noosa in the ‘60s. Our house at the time was Annabell’s – an idyllic start to my surfing lifestyle. We ruled it back then. If anyone dared surf in front of our house, we’d pelt them with marbles. My parents were country pub entrepreneurs, back in the days before capital gains tax. They’d buy a country pub, work it hard for two or three years, sell it, move to Noosa and buy a house on the beach and holiday for a couple of years. During my teenage years they sent me to boarding school on the Gold Coast. I was becoming a bit of a rough nut, so it set me on the straight and narrow very quickly. I think it was the best thing they ever did.
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? I live here because I’ve travelled the world and like to call this home. I love the laid-back pace of the coast, good surf, good offshore fishing, golf courses and weather.
DO YOU HANKER FOR BIGGER WAVES? It’s definitely seasonable and whoever lives on the Coast always does a surf trip, but at times we get good waves. I love Moffat Beach because I can just walk to the beach and surf, plus it’s a point break. The Sunshine Coast has some of the best point breaks in the country. In the early days I used to go to Hawaii every year. The last trips I’ve done are to the Mentawais in Indo and Tavarua, Fiji. J-Bay (Jeffreys Bay, South Africa) is on the bucket list.
IS THERE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT? Early 1986, starting my own business, acquiring great loyal staff that have helped me with the rollercoaster ride of highs and lows of manufacturing and retail on the Coast. All of my staff, we live and breathe the industry. All of my staff, my junior partner Noel, everyone lives the lifestyle.
WHAT WOULD YOU TELL YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF? Don’t rush, you’ll get there. I’m a stresser. I’ve always worked all my life and sometimes I spend too much time behind the desk or in the factory. Sometimes you’ve got to stand back and have an overview of what you’re doing – and go for a surf. It’s like playing footy – you go out and get knocked about, you’re a bit sore, you have a hot shower and you feel great. Billabong’s slogan is ‘only a surfer knows the feeling’.
NRL OR AFL? NRL of course! I’m Queensland born and bred, so the Broncos and also the Cowboys, and Queensland in the State of Origin.

he joyous smiles on the faces of the children peering up at Marianne Mattingly bring tears to her eyes. Their genuine excitement and gratitude is palpable and for a moment these children, who stand no taller than Mattingly’s waist, can escape the reality that tonight they will sleep in a jail cell – or worse, on the street. Today is a brighter day because Mattingly has taken the time to visit and deliver bags of basic items such as clothes, books, toothpaste, toothbrushes and shoes. For these children, nutritious food is difficult to come by, shoes are a luxury and they have few personal possessions. The donations have come all the way from the Sunshine Coast and were sourced by Mattingly through a community board Facebook page and clients of her beauty salon. “I started to visit Thailand 18 years ago and we go back regularly,’’ she says. “Seven years ago I started supporting the Soi Dogs animal rescue centre but I

wanted to do more. “I started taking clothes and distributing them to the needy. I visited my first orphanage in Bali three years ago. “Once it clicked, it just clicked. It is the easiest thing in the world to do to help.’’ Before her visit to Thailand earlier this year, Mattingly put a call out to the
“The community spirit and trust is amazing.’’ Up to 25,000 Australians visit the beautiful island of Phuket each month and yet few venture off the beaten track. Away from the beach and cocktails is a reality that is a stark comparison to the glossy tourist brochures. Tucked away in a dusty street in Phuket Town, set amongst shops
“These women aren’t murderers. . . They give birth to their children in prison. The kids would end up on the streets if it wasn’t for this daycare program” community for donations. The response was overwhelming. “I received 40 bags of clothing from the community… plus my clients donated money as well. “My dentist, 1300 Smiles, donated toothbrushes and paste.
frequented by locals and buildings with boarded up windows, is an unassuming centre known as Uncle Pitak’s Home. The daycare centre, founded by Child Watch Phuket, is for prisoners’ children, children from the nearby slums and construction sites.
It is where Mattingly, with husband Steve Ferris and five-year-old daughter Savannah, visited. It touched her heart to see her daughter playing and sharing food with the Thai children. “I am raising Savannah to understand the importance of helping others. “Children are our future,’’ she says. During the family’s time in Phuket, Mattingly also visited the adjoining women’s prison. “I took basic items such as nappies, formula and toothbrushes,’’ she explains. “These women aren’t murderers… many are women who were forced into prostitution. I don’t have anything against any woman who has no choice and who is trying to send money back to their families. “The prison was harrowing. They are in four-metre by three-metre cells housing at least 10 women. “They give birth to their children in prison. The kids would end up on the myweeklypreview.com.au

streets if it wasn’t for this (daycare) program.’’ She says the most confronting aspect of her charitable work was a visit to the Phuket slums. The homes are made of wooden planks. The “lucky ones’’ have a makeshift roof of tin and tarp. Mattingly is aware there are Australians who are in need, but believes offering a helping hand abroad is also important. Her message is simple: it isn’t difficult to make a difference. Enjoy your holidays but take a moment to lend a hand. “These people have absolutely no support or financial assistance. “You don’t need to go and volunteer overseas for three months… reality is, many of us have young children and can’t do that… but we can still make a difference.’’ The Australian Government’s foreign aid decisions have come under fire recently. In May, Federal treasurer Joe Hockey handed down a budget that will see foreign aid cut by almost $1 billion. Australia’s aid budget for 2015-16 dropped to $4 billion, down from $5.6 billion in 2012-13. International charity Oxfam has spoken out against the cuts, stating that Australia “is on track to its lowest ever level of aid spending’’. Oxfam reports that the new budget leaves the nation lagging behind other developed nations, including the UK who has lifted spending to 70 cents in every $100. Australia’s new program lowers spend to around 22 cents in every $100 of national income. The debate about keeping dollars on home turf versus international contribution is not a new one. Charity worker Carol-Ann Rofe has devoted her life to international assistance and says unlike in Australia, many low-income nations do not have
Mattingly at Uncle Pitak’s Home, Phuket access to simple facilities such as adequate healthcare or financial support. As president of Shed the Light – a not-for-profit Sunshine Coast organisation that assists Nepalese communities – she has spent much time volunteering abroad. “There’s no government aid over there,’’ she says matter-of-factly. “People here generally have access to something… Centrelink, emergency housing, goods hampers. “Over there, there is none of that. Over 8000 people died in that (Nepal) earthquake, let alone the number that were injured. “Getting crutches over there is hard. Basic medical over there is non-existent. “Every child who finishes high school should spend a couple of months overseas and see what it’s like.’’ Shed the Light has a number of
initiatives including earthquake relief, a children’s home for orphaned and underprivileged youth and a women’s empowerment program. The organisation raises money through donations, an op shop in Kenilworth and a Maleny store that sells Fair Trade products from Nepal. Volunteers of all ages and from all backgrounds run the stores, ensuring all profits are funnelled into the programs. In addition to an Australian committee, there is a Nepalese committee which helps to roll out the assistance. Rofe says Shed the Light is making an impact and she has seen firsthand the difference an organisation like hers can make to people living in poverty. “The women’s empowerment group is for single mums; they have no government assistance. We take them in and give them pay while they are learning to sew,’’ she says. “They receive a certificate course at the end so they are qualified to sew and can work in the sewing industry.’’ Established in 2001, Shed the Light was founded by Suzanne Kupiak after she travelled on a mission trip to Nepal. The people she met touched her heart and she wanted to give back. The initial focus was the establishment of a children’s home and over the years the group has assisted about 40 youths. The children receive an education and are supported to go on to study higher education. They are also taught basic life skills such as cooking. Life for these children changes dramatically. “One of the little boys who first came to us, a couple of days after he had been in the home, he went up to (Nepalese committee member) Sarin and said: ‘Do we have rice every night?’,’’ Rofe says. “He would previously have had rice only once a week at most. “Rice is just simple stuff to us. Stuff we can’t understand.’’
FAST FACTS: Australian foreign aid will fall to 0.22 per cent of Gross National Income in 2016–17. The Indonesian aid budget has been cut by 40 per cent in the 2014–15 budget. Aid to Sub-Saharan Africa will drop 70 per cent. Australia will give about $4 billion in Official Development Assistance making the nation the 13th largest donor in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. A $40 donation to Shed the Light will provide a child with basic medical care for a year. $35 will provide food and clothing for a child for one month.

REVIEW
BILLIONS IN BUILDING The Sunshine Coast has recorded $1.18 billion in building activity for 2014/15 – the third straight financial year the region has broken the billion dollar barrier. The Kawana Health Precinct has led the way, including work on an eight-storey multideck car parking facility, the Pulse building, and the Best Western Hotel opposite the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.
GLOBAL TENDER FOR CAR PARK The revitalisation of Mooloolaba is behind Sunshine Coast Council’s decision to go global in its search for a developer of the Brisbane Road car park site. Proposals are expected to include public facilities, shops and a hotel, in addition to providing a minimum of 500 public car parking spaces. The expressions of interest will close on September 17 – hpw.qld.gov.au/qtenders.

PROFILE
WHEN SELLING CARS IS CHILD’S PLAY What drives Brett Mills to spend each September raising money for SunnyKids? WORDS: Leigh Robshaw
B
rett Mills had a dilemma. As dealer principal of Ken Mills Toyota in Maroochydore, three people a day were approaching him to donate to raffles and local fundraisers and at least once a month, he was being hit up for a free car. He wanted to help, but not at the expense of his business. “I actually started getting quite frustrated,” he says. “It was annoying me that so many people would be constantly coming at me for requests. At the same time, I was inspired by other philanthropic people on the Sunshine Coast and felt that when my business was at a certain point, I’d like to give a bit back to the community.” In early 2013, Brett took on the chairmanship of the fundraising committee of local charity SunnyKids, which helps at-risk children. Around the same time, he attended a conference in America. “In a one-and-a-half-hour marketing session, I learnt about ways to support a cause, but also to use that as a branding tool for your business,” he says. On the plane on the way home, he came up with Millsy’s Donation Drive, a month-long fundraiser held each September to raise money and awareness for SunnyKids. “I wanted to be able to give a more substantial amount of money and engage more deeply with one or a few charities,” he says. “So we take our marketing budget for the month – which would be $25,000 – and rather than using it to sell
cars, we use it to promote the donation drive. This year we’re running a series of events and promoting it in conjunction with Hot FM. We’re going to have a pop-up restaurant in our workshop – for $150 people get a three-course meal with beer and wine and live entertainment. We will put a temporary bar in and we’ll light it with car headlights.” Millsy’s Donation Drive raised $30,000 for SunnyKids in its first and second years and now, in it’s third year, Mills is aiming for $40,000. Running a car dealership is no picnic, but it’s the
WORK WITH A LOCAL
donation drive that worries Mills more than selling cars. “Of all the things I do in a year, the success or failure of the donation drive is the thing that concerns me the most,” he says. “It keeps me awake at night. You worry about the events – are people going to support it? It puts me out there personally and I feel a bit exposed. “I’ve got staff to pay and targets to meet, but the donation drive is hard work and I have a great respect for people who work in this charity.” As a father of three kids (six, four and one), Mills says he has a soft spot for children who find themselves in risky or disadvantaged situations through no fault of their own. “SunnyKids is an early intervention model,” he says. “The government can really only help when something goes wrong. SunnyKids takes in referrals when a local person in the community notices a problem with a child. “I assisted SunnyKids in providing some transport to a family with seven kids. It meant all of those kids were able to get to school and ultimately kept that family together and prevented the need for the kids to go into foster care. “What I like about SunnyKids is it’s not a handout service. They get to the basic cause of the problem and give people a hand up, not a handout. I find it massively rewarding when SunnyKids can do something that if you project that child’s life forward 20 years, the difference it makes is enormous.” Millsy’s Pop-up Restaurant will be held on Saturday September 5. Visit donationdrive.com.au for more information and to buy tickets.

ABC Kids World is heaven for kids under eight
FUN FACTORY
Candice Holznagel revisits her childhood at Dreamworld.
I
t was more than 25 years ago when I first stood and looked up at the sweeping steps and brick facade of one of Australia’s top tourist destinations. To a child of the ‘90s – a time sans iPods, smartphones and online games – it was a magical place and like none I’d ever seen. I can recall the excitement like it was
yesterday and have great memories of that family holiday. Recently I had the opportunity to revisit Dreamworld and give my son the chance to experience the magic for himself. What I discovered is that no matter your generation, the Gold Coast theme park is a special place. There aren’t too many places where a day can include everything from visiting
the majestic residents of Tiger Island, feeding kangaroos, riding the Dreamworld Express train, Madagascar madness and the Rocky Hollow log ride. For the bigger kids there is the infamous big nine thrill rides including the Tower of Terror II, the Giant Drop (you can hear the screams echoing through the park) and The Claw. We had one goal and that was to try out the new ABC Kids World. The verdict? Any child under the age of eight will be in heaven. And, it’s enjoyable for parents too. This section of the park is quieter and slower paced. Full of bright colour and interactive activities it was the perfect place for our toddler, who was able to run around freely with mum and dad following closely behind. Growing on the successful 10-year partnership with The Wiggles, Dreamworld extended its footprint to incorporate popular television characters from Giggle and Hoot, Play School and Bananas in Pyjamas. There is a Giggle and Hoot Pirate Ship, Big Red Car ride, Dorothy’s teacup ride, a winding maze and the thrill seeking Big Red Boat ride. ABC Kids World is the only one of its kind in the world, which makes the fact
Sunshine Coasters are only an hour-anda-half drive away pretty special. The theme park is located at Coomera, the gateway to the Gold Coast, which is why we decided to make a weekend of our getaway and spend some time in the world-famous Surfers Paradise. There is no denying that the southern coast is one of the nation’s leading holiday playgrounds.
PLAYING THERE Dreamworld has great value ticket options including holiday and unlimited world passes that will grant you access to Dreamworld and WhiteWater World. A one-day Dreamworld ticket including entry to WhiteWater World costs $95 for adults and $85 for children aged three to 13. Entry for children aged under three is free. Visit dreamworld.com.au
STAYING THERE Check out the family friendly Mantra Sun City. Located one block from the beach and within walking distance of the bustling Cavill Avenue, the hotel has a range of accommodation options with self-catering facilities and a lagoon style pool with water slides. A NEW RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY JUST MINUTES FROM THE BEACH Stage7 Peregian Breeze at Peregian Beach has fast become the most desirable new residential community on the Sunshine Coast with over 150 lots sold in less than a year. INSPECTOR GADGET Do you remember life without smart devices? It’s difficult to remember a time without phones with connectivity, but it’s been less than a decade since the first generation iPhone was released. Now, there is a gadget to connect all of your smart devices. Introducing the Mycroft, a smart home platform that is voice activated. Tell the Mycroft to “turn off the television’’ and it will work with your smart-home devices to do just that. It may be the artificial intelligence you’ve been looking for.

BEACHSAFE With the weather soon warming up, the Coast’s beaches will once again be busy. While there is plenty of fun to be had in the sun, it is important to remember surf safety this season. Users of the Beachsafe app can access detailed information about Australia’s 12,000 beaches including weather and forecasts, tide, swell, water temperature, service patrol periods, Surf Life Saving Clubs, regulatory and hazard information. Users can also view real-time hazard and beach status information as well as up to date images of beach conditions during spring and summer weekends.
Wristwear has been at the forefront of technology savvy accessories. The Apple Watch, Samsung Gear and Pebble Steel have well and truly cemented themselves into the smart market. The latest gadget to surface however, has given the humble ring a makeover. Oura is a waterproof, ceramic ring at the centre of a Kickstarter campaign. It is marketed as a revolutionary “ring-sized wellness computer that helps you sleep and perform better’’. While you sleep, the ring analyses the quality of your rest and recovery by measuring your heart rate, respiration rate, body temperature and movement. When you are awake it collects data and then integrates the information to suggest how to maximise activity.
It’s an oldie but a goodie. Hack is Triple J’s daily news program aimed at the younger generation. It covers a range of genres including current affairs, music, politics and culture. In its 10-year history, Hack has garnered a strong following and been recognised at the prestigious Walkley Awards. These days the half-hour program can be downloaded as a podcast and is hosted by Tom Tilley, who has established himself as a respected current affairs journalist.
The creators hope to distribute the ring as early as November. It is estimated it will retail for around A$400 but you can back the project on Kickstarter and receive the ring for $310. Visit kickstarter.com.
The Beachsafe app is available for free on android and IOS.

MY LIFE
HUGE
THE BEST BREAKFAST Ditch the cereal and toast and start your day the right way, writes Cyndi O’Meara.
I
often get asked where to start with a healthy living program and my answer is – breakfast. But don’t just eat anything. To kick-start your day and have plenty of energy all day long, you need to eat the right kinds of foods. A standard Australian diet (SAD) breakfast seems to be cereal with milk and sugar, toast with margarine and Vegemite and tea or coffee with milk – but this is only in the western world where we are cajoled by advertising to think it is OK to start our day with processed food from a cardboard box. Other nations enjoy a healthier start to their day. So what should we eat for breakfast? Avoid sugary, highly processed breakfast cereals made with artificial colouring, chemicals and partially-hydrogenated oils – they are a highly refined junk food positioned as ‘healthy’ through clever marketing and advertising. They kick off the ‘sugar high/energy slump’
rollercoaster that many Australians experience every day. Instead, start your day with a good mix of quality protein, fats and fibre, all of which stabilise blood sugar levels and stop sugar cravings. These compounds also keep us fuller for longer and reduce the total amount of food we eat each day. Foods such as a warm chia porridge with fresh fruit, sweet or savoury pancakes or a cooked breakfast of eggs with avocado and greens or an omelette are all fabulous in winter. During summer, I enjoy a fruit-only breakfast, homemade muesli (coconut, almond, date and apple) or a protein shake. The breakfast habit is not an easy one to change, but is just one step you can make to feel healthier.

MY OPINION
MIXED MESSAGES
ALL IN THE FAMILY
Greater transparency and open communication are the keys to confidence in our local council, writes Bill Darby.
Siblings can be your best friends – if they don’t kill you first, writes Sami Muirhead.
S
ibling rivalry is starting young in our household. One of our children accidentally fell onto our one-year-old. The oneyear-old then proceeded to poke himself in his own eye with his own finger. Queue the Benny Hill music. The little fellow cried and Mother Of The Year (that is me) just gave him some jelly. Jelly fixes everything, right? Well, not even a bowl of blue jelly could settle my bub. We know it is serious when the kids reject blue jelly. Triage nurses should use the jelly test to sort out their really sick patients from their moderately ill ones. Rejecting blue jelly is similar to aforementioned Mother Of The Year coming home from work on a Friday night and saying, “No thanks I could not possibly have a red wine. I will just have a kale juice.” Pftt. Now I am just talking nonsense. So off to the doctor we went with our squinting bub. The GP sent us to Nambour Hospital who sent us to Caloundra Hospital to see an opthamologist. There was talk of possible permanent damage and a badly scratched cornea. Thankfully our non-blue-jelly eating baby and his eye are both absolutely fine. And equally as lucky, we had plenty of red wine on hand that night to soothe my nerves. But it got me thinking about all the mini wars my brother and sister and I had growing up. We were playing in the pool when I was seven, when my brother picked up a brick and threw it
at my head because we wanted to play a game we invented called pool Pac-Man. Not the brightest crayons in the box. He smashed that brick into my head. I sunk to the bottom of the pool, got fished out and then got stitches. He got grounded. Brothers and sisters tend to battle it out in ways non-relatives could never imagine. In the hospital waiting room with our eye gouge patient, I met another family with an 11-year-old girl who had a suspected broken arm after falling off her horse. Her little brother had left his football in the paddock. Another family was there with a young man with a bleeding eyebrow from a surf board fin – which his brother just happened to be using at the time. And my personal favourite story came from the family who sheepishly told us their five-year-old had pushed a grape up the nose of his three-yearold brother. No matter how many times your siblings Chinese burn, curry cup, knuckle smash, or simply punch you when no one is looking, I am afraid you are stuck with them for life. And I for one wouldn’t change it for the world, because with some luck, when you all grow up, your brother or sister will be your greatest protector and best mate.
For more from Sami go to twomadrabbits.com or you can hear her on Mix FM.
T
he stoush over major project funding between the council and local ratepayer groups has again reared its ugly head. The former CEO of Caloundra City claims the southern end of the Sunshine Coast is getting the short end of the stick, being denied funds for much needed main street infrastructure. The local councillor of 15 years allegedly supports these claims, exclaiming that access to public funds for Caloundra is like getting blood out of a stone. As is so often the case, the regional council finds itself on the back foot as disquiet plays out in the media. Once again, a benign press release gets issued by the council to set the record straight. The council has done everything right, there’s no room for improvement and by the way, Caloundra was never as rich as Maroochy in the first place. That will shut them up for now, let’s carry on. There are a few issues in this scenario that eventually need to be addressed. Firstly, and I don’t know how many times this needs to be pointed out, the council needs to earn the public’s trust. The council needs to be way more transparent and far more authentic in the way it communicates. It was explained to me by the head of town planning that infrastructure spending on the Maroochydore CBD (and projects like the airport expansion) do not deplete regional infrastructure budgets. They are funded separately and independently through other
mechanisms. If this is indeed true, why not pursue this narrative when ratepayers raise the question? Explain the facts rather than expecting the community to simply have trust. Secondly, and perhaps most importantly, is the lack of regional focus our council system delivers. As a divisional council, each councillor relies on the residents within their area to vote them back into a job. The reality is, the system rewards councillors for putting their own division ahead of what’s best for the region as a whole. You can be absolutely assured that our councillors do not want to lose their jobs but until there is systemic change, conflicts of interest will dominate. Thirdly, don’t blame the mayor if you’ve got a beef with the council. The reason being, the mayor has no executive power to do anything whatsoever. The position of mayor is important because he or she is out there trying to be our number one salesperson – spruiking all the wonderful things we’ve got on the go. The reality is, the mayor has no say over the way councillors vote on regional issues. Like it or not, he’s just there to cop the flak when councillors ignore the big picture. I think people should try and remember that.

his time last year I made an exception to my rule of not discussing particular investment product when I wrote about the Future Generation Investment Company. The company was created with the dual objectives of investing in children’s charities as well as offering the investor diversified exposure to Australian equities. Set-up as a fund of funds, Future Generation Investment Fund offers investors unprecedented access to some of Australia’s best fund managers, including funds that are now closed and wholesale funds not open to retail investors. There are zero per cent management fees and zero per cent performance fees
myweeklypreview.com.au

as these fund managers have agreed to provide capacity to the company in their managed funds at no cost. The company will have few expenses as many suppliers are also donating their services. This pro bono support will allow the company to donate one per cent of its assets to children’s charities each year. The attraction from the investor’s point of view is that these fund managers average fees are normally much higher with 1.3 per cent management and 17 per cent out performance fees charged on average. The cost savings are capitalised within the fund and will add to the net worth of the investor. Because of these attractive features company raised the maximum $200 million from investors in the IPO and closed oversubscribed. The company has recently released its inaugural results and has achieved very good returns for investors. It achieved a 3.2 per cent outperformance of the S&P/ASX All Ordinaries Accumulation Index with half the volatility.
The company has also announced that it will donate $1.64 million to Australian charities focused on changing the lives vulnerable children. Now there is a new fund based on the same structure that is soon to list on the market. It is called the Future Generations Global Investment Company. It will have the same structure as the existing fund but will be internationally focused. The company’s charitable objectives are to support charities that are involved with Australian youth mental health. The model is a win for charities and a win for investors. Investors gain unprecedented (discounted) access to some of great international fund managers and diversified exposure to International equities through the different managers’ styles and strategies. The Future Generation Global Investment Company is currently undertaking a capital raising of up to $550 million. Investors can subscribe for shares (with one attaching option) for $1.10
each. The offer is expected to close before the end of August. Of course, it is not suitable to all investors and it is very important that you obtain financial advice and read the relevant product disclosure statements prior to making any investment. HOT TIP: Buy Reckon Limited (RKN) - provider of software solutions for accountants and bookkeepers. RKN delivered a solid result with growth, providing management the chance to push harder on the subscription shift in the Business Group. It appears to have been successful, with subscription growth of 42 per cent implying good conversion from legacy products. Target price $2.35. Source: Ord Minnett Buderim.

NIGHT OF NIGHTS FOR SIX LOCAL WOMEN

T
he 2015 Business Women of the Year Awards were staged at The Events Centre, Caloundra on August 15 and once again attracted a quality field of contenders. There was no shortage of inspiration or success stories among this year’s nominees, who competed across five categories: Corporate, Micro Small, Professional, Sustainable and Young. My Weekly Preview caught up with the winners following their big night.
ROZ WHITE Outstanding Business Woman of the Year – Roz White of White’s Grocers (IGA Supermarkets) Roz White is a well-known identity on the Sunshine Coast and has forged a reputation as someone who focuses on people – her team, customers and the community. This is part of the reason she was awarded the prestigious Outstanding Business Woman of the Year title at the
17th annual awards. She tells My Weekly Preview that she is absolutely thrilled with the win. “It is a very humbling acknowledgement of your work. The whole process (of the awards) is such a celebration of women working in business, contributing and value adding and creating employment. “I must thank the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network. A hearty congratulations for providing the opportunity and being able to allow women to celebrate what they do.’’ It was 22 years ago that Roz and her husband bought a small convenience store in Maroochydore. It has since grown into a successful organisation with an average of 200 staff. She says the key to success is loving what you do and offers this advice: “Create an idea, which stands out in a competitive world, and continue to evolve, adapt, remodel, and reinvigorate your ideas to remain relevant and viable. “Gather your own industry intel to maintain a broad view perspective and gain valuable insight into your own business enterprise. ‘’
COURTNEY ASPLAND Young Business Woman of the Year – Courtney Aspland of TAFE Queensland East Coast This young business woman has one big positive on her side – she loves her job. “As manager of marketing and sales, I’m given the chance to combine my passion for communication and business in a role shaping education for the region,’’ Aspland tells My Weekly Preview. This passion was a key factor in her securing the Young Business Woman of the Year title. She says her win was unexpected. “I recommend the process to anybody. It was a great opportunity for me to go back and review what I’ve done in the past 12 months.” Aspland has been working in the marketing and sales industry for five years and looks forward to continuing her success. “I have always tried to embrace challenges with optimism and enthusiasm in everything I’ve undertaken.”
Rapid heart rate on exercise or just climbing stairs? High or low blood pressure? Fatigue or chest pain?
How’s your heart health? Cardiovascular fitness is a great way to reduce your risk of heart disease, however, if you’re suffering from symptoms of low blood pressure such as dizziness, rapid heart rate, fatigue, or chest pain, there may be a systemic health problem, leading to complication with your heart. These types of heart complaints can affect you at any age and any fitness level, and can be life threatening. Conditions related to inflammation of the heart tissue such as Pericarditis, are most commonly caused by infections, be it bacterial, fungal or viral, and can be just as life threatening as heart disease brought on by a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet and lifestyle habits such as smoking and alcohol consumption. Pericarditis can present with other symptoms such as dry cough, fever, fatigue and anxiety, and in acute stages, be very similar to symptoms of myocardial infarction (heart attack) pain. It can be misdiagnosed, and if not identified, can progress with complications to heart failure. A patient, aged 80, with a history of high blood pressure, previously suffered a heart attack at the age of 50, presented with a dangerously high aortic (heart) blood pressure of 150/110, caused by inflammation in the heart tissues, having been medicated for the previous 30 years at brachial (arm) blood pressure 120/80. He was unaware that his blood pressure measured differently in various parts of his body. With this type of investigation, 2 forms of infection were found as well as high levels of inflammation produced by triggers in his diet. Within 2 months, his blood pressure normalised, within 10 months his cholesterol and triglycerides dropped to within normal levels, and inflammatory markers were reduced. He was then able to remove his medication with the support of his doctor after 30 years. Specific blood and stool testing is necessary to identify the type of bacterial, viral or fungal infection. Each type of infection will respond differently to different types of treatment. Accurate treatment measures are then undertaken resulting in complete recovery, rather than relying on medications to control symptoms for life. Medications to control symptoms rather than treating the cause may lead to side effects, which may create further health complications in the future, which is why it is important to completely investigate your particular circumstances. Reduce your risk of heart disease for life, for you and your family’s sake, with the right testing and treatment, without the need for lifelong medication. She is the proud winner of the Corporate category at this year’s Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network awards. “It’s very exciting,’’ she says. “It makes me very proud of the effort that I’ve put in over many, many years and that has been recognised.’’ Chapman, who has a clear business goal in place, says being well educated has helped her on the way to success. Her advice is this: “It’s planning, knowing exactly what you want and filling in the steps to get there. “It’s about being passionate about what you want, if you have that passion you won’t stop. “You need to be driven as to who you are as a person and what your role is in this life.’’

Her passion for obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound shines through in her day-to-day work life. “I love the wonder of seeing babies develop and grow and interact with their parents and their in-utero world,’’ she tells My Weekly Preview. “I love caring for women, giving them assurance that all is well with their pregnancies.’’ With her obvious passion, it’s no surprise that Ladwig took home the Micro title at the awards. She says she was not expecting the award win. “I was honoured… stunned,’’ she adds. “Winning the award is a nice recognition of the value of the service.’’ Her advice to those pursuing a successful career? “Surround yourself with people who will encourage, support and nurture both you and your dream.

COOKING WITH CREATIVITY Matthew Beasley is the head chef at Bellvista Tavern, Caloundra. Here he shares some of his kitchen secrets.
Q. What’s your favourite go-to meal at home? Something slow cooked on the Weber. Q. What’s your favourite local produce and how do you use it? Heirloom tomatoes. Simply for their amazing flavour and colour. Q. Best advice you’ve been given? Start a family. Q. What’s the strangest meal request you’ve ever had? An egg yolk omelette –
no whites. Q. What do you enjoy most about working on the Sunshine Coast? The lifestyle and climate. Q. What task do you love being able to hand over to your apprentice and why? Anything that makes them use their creativity and ambition. I think it’s important to drive their creativity because without it you will never love the job. Q. Talk us through the process of creating a new dish? I like to use products that I have never used before and then apply different methods of cookery and build the dish from the ground up. Matching sides and balancing flavours with new products can be difficult but is always fun. Q. What do you think Sunshine Coast diners are looking for? Choice, value, quality and ambience. Q. What would be your ideal last meal on earth? Slow cooked lamb shoulder. The Bellvista Tavern offers an extensive range of food options and is open 11.30am to 2.30pm lunch and 5.30pm to 8:30pm dinner. MOTORING PREVIEW
DISCO AS SPORT Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the LAND ROVER DISCOVERY SPORT
T
he word “sport” must surely be the most over-used term in the motoring world. It seems some manufacturers think that the word itself is enough to make a car faster, more exciting and – most importantly – more appealing. And, to be honest, if there’s anyone you’d expect to get the “sport” thing wrong
it would probably be the Brits. But as it turns out, their iconic Land Rover (and Range Rover) brands have set quite a benchmark when it comes to the sport designation. Their Range Rover Sport – a smaller, faster, more athletic version of the legendary luxury off-roader – has been one of the true automotive success stories
– attracting a younger, aspirational demographic to the Range Rover stable. Now the company is trying to repeat the recipe with the launch of the Land Rover Discovery Sport. Like the Rangie Sport, it’s smaller, more nimble and more athletic in its appearance, and its behaviour, than its “parent” model.
And, like the Rangie Sport, there’s every chance it will be a cracking success. Not just because of the almost insatiable appetite in the market for SUVs – and particularly for sexy, pimped-up versions of them – but because it’s a pretty smart piece of kit in its own right. It looks great – but more than that offers impressive performance, flexibility and, surprisingly, practicality to the premium compact SUV sector. It will hit the market at just over $50-grand for a four-cylinder turbo-diesel model with six-speed manual transmission – which is substantially cheaper than you’ve previously been able to get a Discovery into your driveway. Yet it offers class-leading technology – including a nine-speed automatic transmission, collision avoidance braking system and pedestrian airbag – as well as the option of seven seats, which will make it a must-see for many growing families. The Disco Sport isn’t an easy car to pigeonhole. The initial temptation is to compare it to the Range Rover Sport – but that’s hardly fair given it costs about half as much as its bigger sibling. Let’s be honest, there are few vehicles that benefit by comparison to the Rangie Sport. continued over>

MOTORING
<from previous page So let’s weigh up where the Disco Sport sits against similarly-priced opposition – and that makes pretty interesting reading. With prices ranging from $53,300 up to a tick over $70-grand, it matches up against the likes of the American-sourced Jeep Grand Cherokee, German rivals like VW’s Touareg and BMW’s X3, Audi’s Q5 plus Volvo’s popular XC60. In that company, the Sport offers a couple of advantages – not the least is the so-called 5+2 seating arrangement that adds two fold-out seats in the rear cargo area for temporary passengers. Land Rover is calling it the “world’s most versatile” premium compact SUV – thanks to its impressive off-road credentials and its quite refined on-road driving characteristics. It’s not blessed with the same off-road capacity as the full-blown Discovery models – but a simplified version of the Terrain Response system will still get you a fair way off the beaten track. The Sport’s cockpit doesn’t feel quite as impressive as other members of the Discovery family – which have borrowed fairly heavily from the Range Rover example in their layout and functionality. There is a useful colour touch-screen
that delivers access to satellite navigation, audio settings and the like – but otherwise the cockpit is fairly workmanlike apart from the signature Land Rover/Jaguar rotary gear shifter – a round knob that rises from the centre console when you fire up the ignition. It does have some clever luxury touches though – like iPad holders in the rear of the front headrests to keep little ones amused in the back – and a warmer/ cooler box between the front seats to keep those in the front well catered for. Dynamically it’s also quite impressive with a well-resolved ride and decent handling and balance for vehicle that’s still pretty substantial in size and weight.
SUV DOUBLE DEALS
Performance depends a little on which engine option you choose. There two four-cylinder turbo-diesels – one pumping out a solid 110kW and the other tweaked up to produce a punchier 140kW; plus a two-litre turbocharged petrol (like that found in the Range Rover Evoque) that tops the power stakes at 177kW but lacks the oil-burners’ 410Nm of torque. The diesels would be the pick if you’re intent on making use of the Disco’s off-road capabilities. – which include the ability to wade in water 600mm deep, hill descent control, gradient release and rollover stability control. We tested the TD4 HSE model ($60,400 auto) with a turbo diesel that was quiet, smooth and frugal while also giving the Sport adequate torque and acceleration to justify the name. That performance is amplified by selecting sport mode on the transmission which sharpens acceleration – and invites the driver to use the wheel-mounted gearshift paddles. Not that this car will ever be mistaken for a sports car – regardless of what you call it. But an extreme sports car, perhaps.

LAND ROVER DISCOVERY SPORT HOW BIG? They call it a compact SUV – so think BMW X3 or Audi Q5 as direct competitors. The seven-seater option is a huge plus for people shopping in that category. HOW FAST? We didn’t get to sample the speediest model, the turbo-charged petrol version – but the four-cylinder turbodiesel gets up and running with adequate urgency. And it’s quite agile and nimble for a hefty-looking machine. HOW THIRSTY? The diesel impressed us with its relatively light thirst, particularly around town. Combined average is in the 6L/100km bracket. HOW MUCH? The entry-level, turbo-diesel with manual transmission can be had for $53,300 which is a tempting proposition for a car with this much appeal. Our test model, with more power and more luxury, plus a smooth nine-speed auto, tipped just beyond the $60k barrier.

AUCTION V PRIVATE TREATY
What is the best way to sell your home? Most experts agree an auction is the best bet - so what are the pros and cons? WORDS: Candice Holznagel.
I
t’s the one question any property owner selling their home has pondered – what is the best way to sell? By private treaty or auction? The selling points for both arguments are endless. There are numerous pros and cons of going under the hammer versus a set sale price. Before you embark on the real estate journey, it’s important to identify the key differences between the two methods of sale. Private treaty is a sale that occurs when a house is listed for an asking price. Purchasers agreeing to buy a house through private treaty negotiate and agree to a set price. An auction however is the sale of a property, at a set time and place, to the highest bidder. Selling by private treaty can allow greater flexibility for negotiation with the availability to alter contracts to include ‘subject to’ clauses including allowances for building inspection and finance approval. You also have the ability to negotiate the sale price and consider each and every offer. A five day cooling-off period applies to homes that have gone under contract via private treaty. This does not apply for properties sold at auction. Sunshine Coast auctioneer David Holmes from Apollo Auctions says speed of sale is a definite positive of selling under the hammer. “A property that has gone through the auction process is selling a lot more swiftly,’’ he says. “The average days on the market are
“A property that has gone through the auction process is selling a lot more swiftly’’
David Holmes, Apollo Auctions lower than private treaty. “The auction process flushes out buyers… because there is a finite time on it.’’ Holmes says properties that are listed with a price result can leave buyers focusing more on numbers than the product. “I think the big thing is the auction allows people to connect with the house as opposed to looking at the price,’’ he says. “People discount a house that is too expensive or too cheap. “There are no real barriers buying at auction.’’ Holmes says on average around 60% of Sunshine Coast sales were conducted through private treaty compared to 40 per cent through auction. These figures will adjust as education surrounding the auction process becomes more readily available and more people welcome the method.
Belle Property Buderim principal Bevan Horsnell agrees that the auction market will increase as property owners learn more about the subject. “Private treaty is more suited to stock where there a lot of a certain type,’’ he says. “If you think about a house within a certain street where the houses are extremely similar, the value in them is similar across the board. “Whereas if you have got a location with different housing the value can be wildly different.’’ Horsnell says he prefers auction over private treaty but concedes that the second option may have less pressure on the seller. “In auction the positive is that without a set price there is no ceiling. “You find the person who loves the house the most and they are willing to pay whatever they have in their back pocket.’’
HEADLINE The Real Estate Institute of Queensland provides the following steps if you choose to go down the auction road… 1. Work out the appropriate marketing budget to ensure your property is widely promoted taking into account the identified target market 2. Make sure the property is well presented as a potential buyer’s first impressions are crucial to a successful sale 3 .Your agent will require that the contract and the accompanying statutory searches be available well in advance of your marketing campaign. Confer with your agent about this matter as they should be able to provide a check list to help 4. Allow the agent to arrange as many inspections with prospective buyers as possible - it all creates interest. At a local level, this could have a significant effect on the turnout on the day 5. For most, the spectacle will be the main draw card as well as the eventual selling price, so confidentiality is of the utmost importance. The REIQ suggests that you do not disclose or discuss your reserve price with anyone except your agent/auctioneer.

SURF REPORT
with MWP’s man in the water
Well, not much doing at the moment in the way of waves. Will be small but I think if you go on the hunt you might find a surprise. Well I have been surfing now for over 30 years and in that time I have had two encounters with sharks so your chances are low at best. Maybe consider not surfing around bait fish or overcast river mouths on outgoing tides. Solo surfs are where our brains start playing tricks as we jump at shadows. And as my friend points out to body boarders they do look like turtles to a shark. Must admit I do feel pretty comfortable on the stand up when it is looking sharky. Think of me as your personal spotter! Happy Surfing !
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: You can get bream on the rising tide along Bradman Avenue using cut pieces of pillies and prawns. You’ll find flathead and whiting around Goat and Channel Island on the drift with yabbies and lures working the best. Trevally are around the Motorway Bridge pylons using plastics. Mud crabs can be found around the deeper channels at Bli Bli. SURF: There’s sea bream and tailor at Pincushion along North Shore with pillies and mullet fillet the best bait. There are sharks and jew at the Maroochy Bar on big baits on the night rising tide. OFFSHORE: You can get Moses perch, undersize red emperor and parrot at The Gneerings with squid and pillies working the best. The Barwon Banks are firing for squire, snapper and pearl perch with parrot and yellowtail kingies at Wide Caloundra. FRESHWATER: Somerset is returning some nice bass and golden perch on deep diving lures and live shrimps. Lake Baroon and Boondooma are working well for bass, golden and silver perch with great results being reported. Borumba is worth a visit for saratoga on fly and bass on trolled deep diver lures.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 20) You’re keen for change, but are others ready for your ideas? Don’t rush – consultation and attention to detail will get you further. And don’t let your vivid imagination get the better of you – especially involving a romantic relationship, health issue or work matter.
TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21) Expect a project to go haywire, as retro Venus leaves you wondering what is going on! Patience will help you muddle through. Attached bulls – your partner is looking for some advice. Singles – you’re attracting admirers, but make them prove themselves.
GEMINI (May 22-Jun 21) Try looking at situations in a more considered way this week. All is not as it appears, so be extra careful in the way you give and receive information. A colleague or family member is enthusiastic about a project but make sure you check the facts thoroughly before you commit.
CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 23) Crabs are capricious creatures and mood swings are likely this week. With Venus reversing through your self-esteem zone (until the weekend) comfort eating is a danger, as you strive to boost your spirits with treats. Try to employ some restraint, crabs!
LEO (Jul 24-Aug 23) Is your killer cat charisma failing to win over the masses? Fear not lions! Venus stops reversing through your sign on the weekend, so you’ve only got a few more days of dealing with a much less appreciative crowd. Be patient – your time in the Sun will come.
VIRGO (Aug 24-Sep 23) Attached Virgos – you’re keen to pursue a course of action but is your partner on the same page? Singles – don’t accept a dating profile as the truth. Clarify before you proceed. Relationships are more complex than they appear, and people may have hidden agendas.
LIBRA (Sep 24-Oct 23) Mercury is currently in Libra which boosts your natural talent for networking, negotiating and communicating. But remember Venus is still in retro mode (until the weekend) so making social connections and smoothing over problems will take more time than you think.
SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22) The challenge is to let off Scorpio steam in constructive ways, as you capitalise on the fiery Pluto power surge. Making brave changes in your personal life brings deep satisfaction. All forms of physical exercise are favoured, and passion and creativity are also highlighted.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21) When it comes to school or work this week, you may swing between supreme optimism and debilitating self-doubt as your confidence levels go up and down like a yo-yo. Don’t stress Sagittarius … and quit focusing on what your so-called ‘competitors’ are doing.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20) You’ve got the power to move mountains this week (courtesy of Pluto). But you could become increasingly impatient with a loved one’s lack of initiative and accountability. It’s not the time to tell others what to do, so pipe down and concentrate on personal projects instead.
AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19) Make the most of Venus reversing through your relationship zone (for one week) as you reassess a partnership. You know what you need to do, but that doesn’t mean you’ll do it! Mysterious motivations are driving you, so who knows what road you’ll end up on?
PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20) This week you question your actions and doubt your dreams. Neptune certainly sucks the wind out of your sails, and you may feel lost or confused. But avoiding issues won’t make them magically disappear, so do your best to communicate your ideas and intentions clearly.

THE LAST WORD
URBAN NIGHTMARE The Coast could be swallowed by Brisbanopolis if we don’t stand our ground, writes Richard O’Leary.
I
woke up in a cold sweat. I’d just had the most bizarre nightmare. I was living in Queensland in 2050 – the capital Brisbanopolis has four million people. Colourbond roofs are crammed into every available space between Cooloongatta and Noosa. The Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast are no longer geographic locations in their own right – but convenient locators for the delivery of municipal services. The name Noosagatta has been rejected because in this world, everything is about Brisbane. I get out of bed and read one of the weekend papers and realise my sleep terrors are much closer to reality than I’d like to believe. A pointer on the front page of Brisbane’s tabloid celebrates the imminent expansion of the state’s suburban sprawl with a headline: 200km Mega City – Southeast’s NY-Style Evolution.
The story trumpets the “blurring between the capital and the Gold and Sunshine coasts”. It quotes a leading demographer who says the state is witnessing conurbation – three cities all merging into one. What I find most disturbing is that this is seen as a good thing – something to shout from the rooftops rather than be whispered about in the shady back rooms of Parliament House. Why do they think this way? Because they see this eventuality as an extension of Brisbane’s greatness, rather than a diminishment of those regions whose identities will be stolen. It makes the current debate over the inter-urban break between Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast just so important. It was encouraging to see the Sunshine Coast Council use a meeting with the Deputy Premier Jackie Trad, who is also the chair of the South East
Queensland Regional Planning Committee, to push for the preservation of this green corridor. Mayor Mark Jamieson says the inter-urban break is worth $5 billion to the regional economy. The Sunshine Coast Environment Council is also working to protect the 20-kilometre inter-urban break, which when you are driving along the Bruce Highway, has the National Heritage listed Glass House Mountains on one side and the world recognised Ramsar protected Pumicestone Passage on the other. It argues the proposal for Halls Creek (Caloundra South Two) will see the green replaced by grey, and turn what is already a precarious position for water quality in the passage to a point of no return. But this is bigger than SCC and SCEC – this must become everyone’s issue, unless you like the thought of becoming just another suburb of Brisbanopolis. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.

How to make sense of the financial markets when planning for Retirement. NAVIGATING CHOPPY WATERS It’s been 8 years since the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) & the new theme is fear of a GGC – Global Growth Correction. Concerns that weakness in China is going to undermine US recovery, undermine European recovery and undermine global growth.
How can you fund your Retirement & keep pace with the relentless rise in the cost of living whilst protecting your nest egg? At a time when finding a good economic news story in the press is like looking for the proverbial needle in the haystack it can leave most Investors feeling confused and concerned about their financial future. The old adage to ‘sell high and buy low’ seems outmoded in this market when no one is quite sure what the ‘low point’ is – I mean how much further can the markets fall? Any adviser telling you with certainty that they know what is going to happen next is deluded. We are in the hands of a herd and volatility is high! The Dash to Cash - the illusion of security. For a lot of investors the obvious answer has been to make a dash to cash. What’s not to love about the certainty of a 6 month term deposit when the sharemarket seem to be in a state of decline? In the heady days of the 1980’s a $1 million dollar deposit in the bank would have produced $140,000 income. For the same amount in 2015, we have seen the income now fall to $35,000 if you are lucky! Retirees relying on cash investments are finding they have no alternative but to eat their precious nest egg. The ‘REAL’ beginning of the end. In share markets like this one (and we have seen them before) it is easy to overlook the fact that cash has no growth

to reserve a seat or book on-line. Topics to be discussed: N What investment options provide the best return? What are the risks associated with them? N Is chasing better income returns the ONLY solution the problem? N How much cash should the average Retiree hold? N Are there safe products available that produce a guaranteed return? N If you are looking to invest – when should you take the investment plunge?
Already Invested – and the horse has bolted? What about those Investors that are still ‘in’ the markets, boots and all, trying to recoup profits lost over the last few months - desperately trying to find a strategy for long term financial independence? They know that selling the investment property in a down market hardly makes sense - nor does selling a blue chip share portfolio that is currently trading at 10% below its previous highest point. Don’t miss this! On Wednesday, 2nd September at 6pm we are holding an investment forum that will focus on managing your investments in retirement during high volatility.

Astute investors always hold a healthy amount of their investment portfolio in cash but it serves no purpose to have all your eggs in the cash basket in the current investment environment. If simply holding everything in cash ‘until things improve’ is your investment strategy you are courting disaster. Survivors instinctively know that they are going to need another string to their bow to insure their future.

How does the average Investor navigate through this volatility?
potential what so ever. Investors imperceptibly become obsessed with the return on capital (or dividends) relegating capital growth to a thing of the past. They cancel out all possibility of asset growth in the future and place all their bets on the short term negativity that human beings the world over seem to gravitate to - including many journalists.
