OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high-quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.

he days of our family having a hot roast with all the trimmings for Christmas are long gone. Instead, we all pitch in to get a load of seafood for a heat-free kitchen and a (relatively) stress-free experience. I know many of you do the same, which begs the question: How are our seafood stocks holding up? Our cover story looks at seafood and sustainability, and introduces you to some of the real characters of the industry. Also this week, you get a one-on-one interview with the mayor, meet the state’s most senior female police officer (who calls the Sunshine Coast home), and test drive the new Range Rover, which is trying to put the Germans back in their box. Don’t miss our eight-page Melbourne Cup style guide – it’s your best bet for this year’s spring racing carnival. And in property, we run the ruler over the new $210 million development proposed for Mooloolaba. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT

FAMILY TRUMPS FOOTY

Former Origin player and the Storm’s man on the Coast Matt Adamson says a family tragedy gave him the wake-up call he needed. FIRST JOB?

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?

Indoor cricket umpire, at 12. I got $10 cash each game. I came from a very small country town, Taree. There were only two sports, rugby league and cricket. My love and passion was cricket and I wanted to play for Australia.

The day I got married, January 10, 1999. The births of my three beautiful daughters, Charlotte, Milly and Lucy. Even though we give years of our lives to battering ourselves on the footy fields, there are better things in life.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

YOUR GREATEST REGRET?

IMAGE: CARLYLOOYAH.COM.AU

Relocation of the under 20s program for the Melbourne Storm. We realised 50 per cent of our kids came out of Queensland, so we thought it would be more fundamental to have our program here. We’ll be based at the Sunshine Coast stadium. I’m trying to find jobs for kids and accommodation. The players come from a demographic from Rockhampton to Toowoomba to the Gold Coast. Fifty per cent of the squad are already in the workforce and 50 per cent are finishing school and looking for apprenticeships in building, plumbing and electrical, so I’m on the lookout.

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . My wife and three beautiful daughters who are 15, 12 and seven.

FIRST CAR? Honda Civic, first rugby league contract at 18.

FAVOURITE BOOK? The autobiography of Manchester United soccer captain Roy Keane .

FAVOURITE SONG? Anything by Coldplay. They just make feel-good music.

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? My grandfather told me to always surround yourself with good people. Unfortunately he passed away when I was 18.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE? Since October last year. I had a mate living in Peregian so I bought a place there. The family came up in December. We love it and we’re never leaving. We sold our house in Sydney so we’re looking to start a new life here.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? From Caloundra to Noosa and into the hinterland. It’s just amazing, just a beautiful part of the world. I’m blessed to be placed here.

12 My Weekly Preview | October 16, 2015

12.indd 1

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE? Probably just bring my mum and dad up closer. They’re coming up for Christmas – they’re pretty excited about that. Also, there are a number of homeless kids on the Coast. It’s a passion I have, trying to rectify the problem.

IS THERE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT? About five years ago, my wife’s cousin was killed on a bus she was travelling in with 26 kids – four were her own. The bus driver opened the door when they were doing 120 kilometres and Cathy was sucked out of the van. Her kids witnessed their mum being flung out the door and tumbling across a bitumen freeway for about 300 metres. Cathy was a pastor in a church and one of her friends made contact with us a week after her funeral. I’d played rugby league all my life, made money, travelled the world. But I realised I had no relationship with my wife or kids because I was working my butt off. So I joined C3 church in Rozelle and now we attend C3 church in Noosa. That tragedy saved my marriage and helped me to be a good father to my three beautiful kids.

Not spending enough time with the kids would be my greatest regret today. But sometimes when you have a work ethic like I do, that can inspire your kids. My kids probably look at me and think Dad’s a hard working Australian male and I think that’s a good image for young kids. I don’t want to be laying around on the couch like a bum, drinking beer and wasting my life.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? Being married for 16 years. I love my wife and I hope we’re together till the day we die.

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? When I’m on holidays, not worrying about work. I love to travel. Love to explore, love to see how other people live.

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST? Kids that don’t live their best life. Kids that are given a skills set and don’t give life a crack. They fill their lives with excuses.

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH YOUR FRUSTRATIONS? Take a deep breath and just keep going. Part of the job as a rugby league coach is to try to find a way to inspire kids. Kids these days have these dreams of being on The Voice or X Factor or The Block and being an instant superstar, but life’s not like that. I think kids need good oldfashioned values, they should grow up respecting school teachers, police, ambos, firemen – people who keep us safe. I don’t see the younger generation respecting that. The media says you can be this person and it all comes easy. That’s bullshit. Nothing comes easy in life.

TEA OR COFFEE? Coffee, a strong latte from Berardo’s on the Beach at Noosa. It’s the best place on the whole of the Sunshine Coast.

NRL OR AFL AND WHO DO YOU FOLLOW? NRL. Melbourne Storm.

COVER STORY

BALANCING THE SCALES

IMAGE: CARLYLOOYAH.COM.AU

Keeping commercial fishing sustainable in Australia is a slippery business. Words: Candice Holznagel

K

evin Cannon is so profoundly ingrained in the fishing industry that the sea and salt run deep in his veins. For half a century he has relished in the adrenalin surge that comes with the game; the chase and the excitement of hauling in a large catch capturing his heart. On any given day as the sun rises and the sky turns blood red above Maroochy River you are likely to find this salty character casting his line from the beach. He spends the evenings net fishing and steering his boat in the waters off Coolum and up to Bribie Island chasing small shark and mackerel. His catch is thrown on to an ice slurry to ensure its freshness for delivery to Point Cartwright Seafood Market at Warana. Owned by the Thomas family, the seafood shop specialises in wholesale and retail and has been in business for 15 years. Supporting local commercial fishermen is its core focus. Michael Thomas says the family works alongside the region’s best to provide wholesale products including Mooloolaba prawns, spanner crabs, 14 My Weekly Preview | October 16, 2015

oysters and fish through the Coast, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. The fresh fish is also sold through its retail shop and to local restaurants. “We’ve got about 15 fishermen on our books. On any given day we don’t know what’s going to come through the door. There is fresh fish every day,’’ Thomas says with passion evident in his voice. “The exciting thing that keeps you on your toes is you might feel you have got a slow day on your hands when all of a sudden three fishermen turn up and your day takes a different turn.’’ Thomas’ love for the industry is a family trait. His father Paul was a marine biologist whose work took him around the world, from Antarctica to Fiji. Fishing is a generational profession similar to cattle farming in the west and sugar cane growing in the north. It’s no surprise that fishing also runs in Cannon’s blood. His father was a fisherman and his grandfather and uncle also worked in the industry. One of Queensland’s largest fishing ports, Mooloolaba, has played host to the Cannon family throughout the years. The 68-year-old has fond memories of growing up in the beachside town and

can recall the family’s cattle roaming around the plains before the skyline was littered with high rise development and tourists flocked to the glitzy strip of boutiques and cafes. Today it is the base for one of the Sunshine Coast’s largest industries. A Fisheries Queensland spokesperson says more than 2000 tonnes of fish have been caught in the Sunshine Coast region in the past two years. Last year, net fishing accounted for 565 tonnes while otter trawling hauled in just more than 1000 tonnes.

In Queensland the value of commercial fishing comes in at about $198 million with almost 18,000 tonnes of product being hauled in from the sea in 2014. Cannon, who spent 30 years as a trawler fisherman before turning to net and beach fishing in 1995, has seen many changes within the industry, including the highly-publicised and somewhat controversial introduction of State and Federal Government zoning and licence restrictions. Zoning was introduced to manage

Their latest move is groundbreaking and sure to cement their future for decades to come. and protect marine parks, with each zone outlining different rules for commercial and recreational fishermen. It includes limitations of fishing licences, seasonal closures, restrictions on nets and pots and limits on total catches. The latest round of zones to be announced has been a topical issue within the industry, however they will not affect Sunshine Coast waters but focus instead on central and north Queensland. Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Bill Byrne says 90 per cent of the 6,300 submissions were in favour of introducing the new net-free zones. “The net free zones will offer benefits in tourism and recreational fishing in Queensland and I am excited about the opportunities these zones will have directly on the communities along the boundaries.’’ He says the government is aware of concern within the commercial fishing industry but reform is an election commitment. Cannon understands the need to protect the marine environment with zones but fears the industry will not remain viable. “All commercial fishing is now heavily regulated from when I first started. They are pushing more and more people into smaller areas… it makes it hard. “Fisheries aren’t managed by science, fisheries are managed by votes. “Commercial fishermen are dwindling because of regulations and we are getting older. Banks are reluctant to lend money (to people entering the industry) because of the regulations. We’ve got no certainty.’’ His sentiments are echoed by Thomas who views the industry as a vital economic driver for the Sunshine Coast. “It is an extremely important industry. . . the number of jobs that are supported with the industry just filters on through. You have fishermen, then

Mooloolaba Harbour is home to one of Queensland’s largest fishing ports generation of fishers. They are taking matters into their own hands to ensure they remain viable. In fact, there is little doubt that husband Pavo and wife Heidi are

“We are exporting fish to countries like Switzerland for their biggest supermarket chains” pioneering the future and are moving forward with the sweeping changes. Their business launched in 2001 with one small, wooden boat. They are now one of the biggest tuna fishers on the east coast exporting fresh fish to Japan and America.

four years working to earn what is considered the highest standard for seafood sustainability. “It has taken years of work to receive this certification and we are now focusing on exporting most of our fish to Europe which we previously have not been able to do,’’ Heidi says. “Europe is heavily focused on sustainability and generally will only sell MSC accredited fish. We are exporting fish to countries like Switzerland for their biggest supermarket chains.’’ She has faith in the future of Queensland’s industry. “People should be aware when they are eating Australian seafood they are eating the most sustainable seafood in the world. “It is important that consumers ask for Australian seafood because 75 per cent of seafood in Australia is imported and is not sustainable.”

DOES YOUR POOL COMPLY? Pool owners have until the end of November to ensure their pools comply with safety standards. Sunshine Coast councillor Christian Dickson says, “Compliant pool barriers help save lives by preventing young children from accessing swimming pools. They also provide peace of mind for pool owners.’’ The Queensland pool safety standard covers the height and strength of barriers, mandatory non-climbable zones, gates and latching requirements. FOUR FOOTY CLUBS TO FLY IN Four of the country’s largest AFL Clubs – the Magpies, Hawks, Saints and Demons – will call the Coast home over the coming months. The teams will fly into the region for pre-season training camps at the Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex. Hawthorn Football Club’s Chris Fagan says Maroochydore provides the perfect combination of world-class facilities and ideal weather conditions. Councillor Jason O’Pray says the visits boost the economy, with around 75 representatives staying in hotels and shopping locally.

THE INTERVIEW

READY TO TAKE THE REINS AGAIN Mark Jamieson reflects on his first term as mayor with My Weekly Preview editor, Richard O’Leary. RO: The original estimate that Sunshine

always very important. For me, it’s all about planning. Council’s key role is planning and we’ve done a good job planning for our future.

Coast ratepayers would have to fork out for the Caloundra South infrastructure was $560 million – how have you gone from that figure to zero?

RO: But can the region cope with that

MJ: The $560 million was assessed by

amount of people, even if it is over three decades, without massive improvements to road and rail?

our professional officers at a time when we were excluded from the negotiations but when we got back to the negotiating table we had a company come in and do an independent report, which found $268 million was the sum total at risk. Changes within government legislation cut $200 million, the decision by the state to acknowledge its responsibility for the east-west arterial road accounted for over $50 million and we negotiated carefully with the state Labor government to make sure it lived up to its undertaking that Sunshine Coast ratepayers wouldn’t be on the hook for any contingent liabilities which aren’t funded. We’ve also worked tirelessly with Stockland.

MJ: I believe we can. If you think of the last 20 years, 150,000 people have moved here. People said we’d never cope. Well we have. We have extra capacity. Adding extra lanes to the Bruce Highway can’t go on ad infinitum. What we have to do is build a stronger economy here so fewer people need every day to get on the road to Brisbane.

IMAGE: SAM WALKER

RO: You mentioned that Caloundra

RO: Is wiping out that big bill your greatest achievement as mayor?

MJ: I think getting a seat at the table was

South is a win for good planning, what about Palmview? The structure plan which is out for public comment has junked some key elements of the original approval: affordable housing, water harvesting, energy efficiency and tropical climate design. With those being removed, how does that fit in

THE INTERVIEW

with the council’s aim for the Sunshine Coast to become the most sustainable region in Australia?

MJ: Clearly the original infrastructure agreement finalised by the inaugural Sunshine Coast Council was beyond what was reasonable in terms of the investment and economic realities post the GFC about what can be delivered. I’m not unconvinced that we will maintain very high standards at Palmview as well. To be competitive it’s going to have to be as good as what’s down the road (Caloundra South).

RO: Your time is nearly up on your first term, what are you most proud of?

MJ: I’ve said consistently, I wanted us to develop a council that would set an example for our community, in cohesion, co-ordination and teamwork. I think that’s been pretty important and I think we’ve done that. We’ve not had spats between councillors in the media…

Strategy, the Environment Strategy and the Social Cohesion Strategy. You also have to think that in 2012 when this council was elected, our economy was in a mess. People had been badly hurt by the GFC and people wanted some leadership, and people forget those things pretty quickly. I’m happy this council has provided that leadership, that guidance and that example.

RO: Your biggest frustration in those three-and-a-half years?

MJ: Probably not having enough time to do everything. Reports to be read, information to be digested, working with the council administration to drive improvements and better

to that. compared to other levels of government and other major councils I think generally council has bought in to critical policy like the Regional Economic Development

MJ: Yes, absolutely. You don’t want to start the process too early, but it gets to the point where you want to give the community the confidence that here is a mayor that’s committed, and not hedging his bets and he’s fair dinkum.

RO: So, why are you running again? MJ: I think some of those projects we have underway [capitalising on the investment in the Kawana health precinct, the economic opportunities of the new hospital, getting the new CBD in Maroochydore underway, the planned expansion of the airport, the innovation around the solar farm, work on light rail, and the submission for a broadband subsea cable] are still to be finalised. They’re underway but they need nudging along.

“I’m expecting someone to stand for the role of mayor, but they need to get into it because this is a pretty challenging role. . ”

RO: There’s been a couple of exceptions MJ: Yes, but in the main I think

were going to run for mayor again, but the door was still left slightly ajar, are you definitely running?

outcomes, and all the public attendances. I have to say I’ve had fantastic support from my wife Lorrell, she’s been outstanding as Mayoress.

RO: The last time we spoke you said you

RO: Whispers are growing louder that property interests on the Sunshine Coast are going to put a candidate up against you. Does that worry you?

MJ: I haven’t heard of it and it doesn’t worry me. I’m expecting someone to stand for the role of a mayor, but they need to get into it because this is a pretty challenging role and they’ll need to be very well resourced because I know what running a campaign for mayor is like and I know how well prepared I am for the next campaign.

RO: Talking of campaigns and how much they cost, would you be in favour of a system where candidates had to declare their donations before the election rather than after?

MJ: It wouldn’t worry me particularly, at all. I don’t take electoral donations from anyone who has an expectation they’re going to get something as a result of it. I’m certainly not going to sell my reputation for what are relatively modest sums of money. What I see them as is donations of money, invariably from business leaders who have an expectation about what I may do for the broader Sunshine Coast and I think I’ve delivered on that. In fact, as mayor, which is different to being a candidate I will need to declare those donations made to me ahead of the election date anyway.

PROFILE

LADY IN BLUE LEADS THE WAY Award-winning police officer Debbie Platz of Mooloolaba is at the forefront of evidence-based policing. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw

W

hen Debbie Platz of Mooloolaba told her parents she wanted to enter the police force, they were horrified. She had planned to become a journalist and was shadowing then Channel 7 crime reporter Kay McGrath when she decided she’d rather solve crimes than report on them. “My parents thought of it as being a very dangerous career. I always remember my mum saying, ‘It doesn’t matter, she doesn’t stick to things very often’.” Thirty years later, Platz is the most senior female in the Queensland Police Force and has won a string of awards, including the Australian Police Medal. As Chief Superintendent and Executive Manager, Training and Development of the Queensland Police Service and Public Safety Business Agency, Platz is responsible for the training of 800 police recruits each year and 15,000 service personnel, including investigative, intelligence, forensics, counter terrorism and detective training. On September 24 she added another accolade to her collection – an Outstanding Alumni Award from the

University of the Sunshine Coast. She graduated from USC with a Master of Business Administration in 2004 and a Graduate Diploma of Education in 2011. Not content to put the books aside, in 2014 she won a coveted Wakefield Scholarship from Cambridge University to complete a Masters of Applied Criminology and Police Management. “My interest was drawn to that course because it’s one of the few in the world

that teaches you evidence-based policing. “Doing randomised controlled trials is difficult in policing; what we do is often reactionary. An incident happens and you have to solve it quickly. Across the world, there have only been approximately 90 randomised trials conducted in policing organisations and in Queensland, we’ve conducted four. It puts us up there with the leaders.” Platz has made three trips to Cambridge, working with world experts to learn how to use science to prevent and solve crimes, and predict who will be offenders and victims. She’s now completing her thesis, which examines whether training can influence police officers’ values and willingness to intervene in workplace bullying and sexual and racial bias. It’s the first randomised controlled trial in any policing academy worldwide. “If you look at the research across the world, policing jurisdictions generally have a high level of workforce bullying. “I have a strong passion for ensuring

the private safety of people, so I’ve been very much involved in domestic and family violence. I was a detective for eight years in a child protection unit. I dealt with a lot of child abuse, hence my passion for workplace harassment and bullying. Just seeing the effects of all that violence and intimidation can have on a family and workforce really drives me to work out how we can prevent it.” Platz has combined a full-time career with three university degrees and raising three children, now in their 20s. Her kids say she was overprotective as they were growing up, complaining of not having the freedom their friends did. Platz says as a mother, she has tried to balance her desire to protect her children from the dangers she knows intimately, with taking her police hat off every now and then. “I imagine some of that [overprotectiveness] comes from working for a lot of time in child protection. But as police officers we sometimes need to have a reality check because we see the worst of the worst of people, but there’s this whole other side of the community that are loving and caring parents and friends and workplaces.”

TRAVEL

The Sphinx and the pyramid of Cheops in Giza.

LIKE AN EGYPTIAN

Modern troubles have deterred many from visiting Egypt’s ancient ruins, but Courtney Bonnell says it’s time to go.

W

hen I told people I planned to visit Egypt, family, friends - even waiters - replied, “Wow!” and “Amazing!” But their eyes said, “Are you insane?” Egypt’s once-thriving tourism industry has been plummeting since the

2011 popular uprising that ousted longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak. Recent attacks have added to the uncertainty: the mistaken killings of eight Mexican tourists by government security forces, a bombing outside the Italian Consulate in Cairo, a foiled attack on the famed Karnak Temple.

Each headline brought a flood of texts from loved ones. Yes, I saw the news, I responded. I endlessly trolled TripAdvisor, searching “Is it safe to go to Egypt?” even after booking with a highly rated tour company. My stomach did some flips on the plane, until I spotted the pyramids from the air. There are no safety guarantees in a restive country like Egypt - or anywhere. But with a guide by my side, I never felt unsafe. Plus, I was too exhausted from sightseeing to wander around on my own. The guides manoeuvre you through Cairo’s heart-stopping traffic - where lanes are merely suggestions and tapping the bumpers of merging cars is commonplace - and allow you to bypass hassles elsewhere. For example, my guide took me straight to the camel-ride operator he trusts near the pyramids, avoiding what he said would be a raucous, grasping crowd prone to physically pulling the arms of those approaching on their own. Instead, I hopped right on the animal, a 10-year-old boy took the reins and we set out into the sun-drenched desert alone. I was nervous the camel might toss me off with a kid in control, but no

problems materialised and I was able to re-create a photo I saw every day on the wall of my childhood home: my father on camelback in the dusty desert circa 1980. My guides also took pro photos, key for a solo traveller like me. The boy expertly posed me, telling me to hold out my finger to make it look like I was touching the top of a pyramid. Every guide, driver and other worker dependent on tourists and tips was eager to please, pressing me to drink enough water and taking me to government-run shops for authentic, beautiful gifts, including hand-painted papyrus and hand-chiselled statuettes. You still haggled, but it was nothing like the relentless street touts, who joke, cajole and harass tourists into buying cheap wares. On the Nile cruise ship, souvenirsellers in speed boats threw their ropes to the crew, calling “Hello!” and “Hola!” to passengers above and hurling up blankets to anyone who peeked over the railing. It helped that I’d prepared for the worst when it came to street vendors, traffic and even the crushing poverty. Through the window of my Cairo hotel, I saw half-completed apartment buildings, twisting metal on their roofs awaiting new floors.

View of the Cairo tower in the evening - Egypt Rubbish piled up and spilled into the city’s polluted section of the Nile, left for thin horses and donkeys to nibble. But for those with a sense of adventure, visiting now has big advantages. Tourists were few enough that I got photos at many temples with no one in the background. There were 40 people on my cruise, a luxurious journey with truly fantastic food and service that normally boasts 140 passengers. While you can learn about mummies in school and admire photos of the Great Pyramid, that’s nothing like actually clambering up its ancient steps. Or staring down the dark tomb of Merneptah in Luxor’s Valley of the Kings

to see a blanket of etched and painted stars, the blues and yellows as vibrant today as they were 3000 years ago. After gazing into the golden eyes of King Tut’s death mask, dipping my hand in the Nile during a boat ride and tracing hieroglyphs on ancient temple walls with my finger, I must say: It’s time to go.

MY OPINION

TURNING THE TABLES

FASHION QUEEN GETS REAL

Malcolm Turnbull is a welcome change but it’s early days, writes media and communications specialist Carolyn Tucker.

Collette Dinnigan and ALDI are a match made in heaven, writes Sami Muirhead.

W

ell people, you will see my daughter this week frolicking about decked out in designer wear fit for the catwalks of Europe. I hope. If I can outsmart and outwit the hordes of mums trying to also bag a bargain for their little girl. You see, Collette Dinnigan has shocked the nation and collaborated with Aldi to bring out a new line of clothing for little girls, called Young Hearts, starting at $12. Yes, Aldi. That wacky German shopping chain that so many of us love. And yes, the darling of Australian fashion who is usually more comfortable showing her exquisite gowns in the pages of Vogue magazine than churning out mainstream kids clothing for a grocery chain. It is a union no one saw coming and it is genius. Now we can save money on the family food bill and put those savings towards Collette’s cute culottes. Try saying that last bit three times quickly. This year a study by consumer group Choice found that shopping at Aldi saved 50 per cent on the average basket of essentials. Sure, it puts me into a panic going through the checkout because it makes me feel I am too slow in life and then I never have my own bags and I curse myself. But I love a bargain. I also love the surprise factor in those crazy middle aisles. You never quite know what is going to be next to the boring old grocery staples. It is a like a wheel of surprise. Some weeks it is lawn mowers

and ski gear and other weeks it is patio furniture and moustache trimmers. The German company has a winning formula. It is rolling out 120 new stores and expanding its unique empire by spending $700 million in South Australia and Western Australia and taking the total outlets around the nation to 500. More Aldi stores are also planned for the Sunshine Coast. Collette Dinnigan is also a winning brand. The mum has reigned as one of our premier fashion designers for 25 years, has lingerie lines around the world, is an author, designs flash hotel rooms and just seems to live a fabulous lifestyle sipping cocktails all day. But I like that she is not such a snob that designing for the masses of Australian kids is beneath her. My buddy, who is a TV journo, once reported on the doyenne of dresses who had a fashion show in Paris. The TV network had arranged for my friend to wear one of Dinnigan’s gowns. My girlfriend is a size 10 but when she arrived to try the whispery lace dress on, it would not even fit over her arm. She said she felt like a baby elephant trying to squeeze into a bikini. I always remembered that and thought Collette lived in a world very different to the rest of us mere mortals. It turns out I was wrong. But I wonder if Collette also gets frustrated at having to return the trolley. For more from Sami go to twomadrabbits.com or you can hear her on Mix FM.

F

inally, the circuit breaker we had to have. The toppling of Tony Abbott last month has triggered a reversal in the government’s fortunes, with Malcolm Turnbull well ahead in the preferred Prime Minister stakes and the Coalition recording its best result in opinion polls since April 2014. Despite the continued wailing in some conservative quarters that Tony Abbott would have led the Coalition to victory, successive polls suggested he was leading them over a cliff and many in the community were aching for change. The Opposition and some commentators claim the elevation of Malcolm Turnbull is merely a change in style, not substance. That remains to be seen but for now, the change in style has been well received. The new Prime Minister’s emphasis on optimism and confidence is a welcome shift away from the doom and gloom we’ve been force fed for so long. We know there are significant challenges ahead, but there is no reason to assume the nation is not up to the task and ‘we’ll all be rooned’. Welcome, too, is the refreshed ministerial line-up, with its improved gender balance and injection of new talent, including the promotion of local representatives who will have greater opportunity to seek national support for initiatives in our region. There are finally efforts to cultivate

relationships with the crossbenchers, and the decision to park plans to deregulate university fees was a recognition that the legislation was going nowhere and politics is the art of the possible. Malcolm Turnbull is reportedly opting for a ‘less is more’ strategy, limiting his public comments to those occasions on which he has something meaningful to say. This may assist in restoring some dignity and gravitas to the office of Prime Minister, eroded over time by hollow, repetitive slogans and media stunts complete with props and silly costumes for the cameras. It matters little whether the Prime Minister is loved by the electorate as long as he or she is trusted and respected. We need leaders who will represent our national interest with courage and conviction, but be flexible enough to change course if the public is sending them a clear message. I’m willing to endure some short-term embarrassment about the ‘revolving door’ if it means an improvement in the standard of political debate and the community is taken into the government’s confidence. It’s been a positive start for the new Prime Minister, but then the start almost always is. At least now it appears we have a contest that will push all players to lift their game.

It’s the brand’s first celebrity collaboration. “Everyone in my life knows I absolutely love makeup,” she told Beauty Directory. “From a very young age, it was an artistic passion of mine. I actually used to be a makeup artist. I love wearing makeup and having so many ways to express myself through it. It’s my war paint.” Urban Decay is about beauty with an edge. One of its most popular products is its Moondust Eyeshadow (pictured above in Zodiac) which creates a 3D metallic effect with micro-specks of iridescent sparkle. MY LIFE

CHANGE IS INEVITABLE Finding a happy medium between being addicted and resistant to change is a key to happiness, writes Jodi Chapman.

O

n both accounts, being resistant to change or addicted to change can be detrimental to your health and happiness, as we all know too well that change is inevitable. The question is, if you are either resistant or addicted to change, how is it affecting you? Being addicted to change creates all kinds of difficulties in life, with a constant upheaval of the things that create stability, normality, and balance, allowing you to continue to build and grow valuable resources in your life. The feeling that the grass is greener, isn’t always true, though the person who feels compelled to find out may end up never gaining the momentum of building something amazing, as they are always starting again with a new job, career, relationship, a new home, always looking for better. For some people this is an addiction. It can develop from an

imbalance in dopamine, the reward brain chemical, giving you a sense of achievement and contentment when you have enough, and feeling the need to search for a better reward if you don’t produce enough, never feeling satisfied. Being resistant to change, creates just as many difficulties, in that life can and will change, and unless you move with it, it becomes stressful. Learning about yourself, what suits your lifestyle, making changes to better yourself shouldn’t be scary, and should be a part of growth. Embrace change, be true to yourself and allow the changes to be trialled long enough to know they were right. Being aware you are either resistant or addicted to change may be enough to help break the cycle.

BUSINESS AND FINANCE

OFFSHORE OPPORTUNITY Justin Scattini is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.

P

eter Lynch, a US-based fund manager, is revered as one of the greatest investment minds on the basis of the hugely successful Fidelity fund he managed from the 1970s through to the 90s. He is also the author of one of the first investment titles that I ever read and still one of my favourites One up on Wall Street, which was first published in 1989. Central to his success was the idea that investment success involves research, patience and resilience. Lynch believes everyday investors can claim an advantage over professional investors because of their familiarity with the market place. He found some of his best ideas came when he was out with his family, travelling or talking with friends and associates. Perhaps this familiarity is the reason why many investors are attracted to the shares of companies whose products and services they deal with every day, for example, banking, insurance, healthcare, even where they shop. While many of these companies are Australian-based, numerous brands and franchises we deal with are headquartered offshore. Fortunately, local investors have an increasing number of ways to access these global brands. The most obvious way is to buy overseas listed stocks directly. This is now far easier and less expensive than was the case a few years ago but it is still best suited to investors with larger account balances. Alternatively an investment can be

made in managed funds that are focused on investing in international stocks, similar to Peter Lynch’s fund. Let’s take the MFS Global Fund, one of our core preferences, as an example. Its top holdings include Nestle, Bayer, Time Warner and Visa. Other favoured international managers include Platinum International, IFP Global Franchise Fund, Magellan Global and PM Capital. There are other advantages to investing offshore, including reducing the concentration risk that can develop in an Australian-only portfolio and reducing the risk of problems specific to the domestic economy. It also offers the opportunity to diversify currency exposures and benefit from a depreciating Australian dollar. Justin Scattini is an Authorised Representative (no 427053) of Ord Minnett Ltd, AFS licence 237121. He can be contacted on 07 5430 4444. BIG TOP SHOPPING CENTRE PROMOTION

THINK FRESH Looking for lunch on the go? The vibrant Big Top Shopping Centre is the place to meet, the place to feast and source fresh, local food.

IT’S A FAMILY THING The name Joe Natoli is well known on the Coast largely due to his time in the mayoral chair. Now, the businessman has joined forces with brother Anthony. Together the duo is following in their family’s footsteps by specialising in fresh, local food with their business The Two Bros. With everything from fruit and vegetables to a catch of prawns fresh from the trawler in Mooloolaba, The Two Bros at Big Top Shopping Centre have it in stock. There is a great range of deli and fine foods, gelato, pastries and coffee. There’s no chance of going hungry either, with a great range of lunch food including panini, rolls, wraps, salads, pies and fish and chips. For more visit thetwobros.com.au.

Want to grab lunch on the go? We love these fresh sandwiches available from The Two Bros.

TIMELY TAX ON THE GO For people working five days a week, making time for errands and appointments can be difficult. Unfortunately, one of the things that can get overlooked is filing an annual tax return. Good news, according to senior tax consultant Diane Burgoyne, is that tax is something that can be done on the run during your lunch hour. Income Tax Professionals at Big Top specialise in everything from returns to BAS statements, bookkeeping and general advice. Appointments are recommended but walk-in clients are welcome depending on availability. They are open five days a week. Phone 5475 4416.

A GOOD DROP LEBANESE SPECIALTY When it comes to cooking chicken, George Barbarian has plenty of knowledge to call on. His Sydney-based family has been selling charcoal chicken for years. Now, Barbarian is using his family’s Lebanese-influenced recipe to create his own success story. Earlier this month he opened Barbarian’s Charcoal Chicken at Big Top Shopping Centre. The store specialises in chickens but mixed plates are also popular and comprise of chicken, lamb and beef skewers served with tabouleh, hummus and Lebanese bread. All of the dishes are made fresh on site. Barbarian’s Charcoal Chicken is open seven days, 6am to midnight.

The secret to a good cup of coffee comes down to the beans and the barista. The team at Good Bean Espresso Bar pride themselves on serving great beverages with staff members undergoing a barista course prior to stepping behind the bar. The Sunshine Coast franchise uses 100 per cent Arabica beans for a smooth, bitter-free cup of coffee. The best thing is they offer a full range of milk including skinny, soy, almond, lactose free and full cream. With summer fast approaching it’s also a great time to try out Good Bean’s specialty cold drip coffee with ice lattes made and bottled fresh daily. Visit goodbean.com.au.

ELEGANT AFFAIR TO RAISE FUNDS

The event is on October 31 at 4pm at the Buderim store. For more information phone 5456 1666.

Think pink this October and help raise much needed funds to support women living with breast cancer. Coast fashion house Elegant Affair is hosting a wine and cheese event to raise money for the Cindy Mackenzie Breast Cancer Foundation. The foundation was a not-for-profit organisation that launched in 2007 by the late Cindy Mackenzie’s family and friends. It supported more than 350 women living with breast cancer. In September the foundation handed its operations and assets over to establish the Sunshine Coast Private Hospital Cindy Mackenzie Breast Cancer Program as an added benefit to the hospital’s breast clinic which launched in 2014. Elegant Affair will donate 100 per cent of sales from certain pink ribbon items to the foundation. There will also be a wishing well, raffle and lucky draws.

MY TIME

TODD’S GROG Todd Widdicombe delves into the mysteries of women and tries a new IPA.

R

ecently my wife said to me, “You never listen to me and you only hear what you want to hear,” to which I replied, “Sure, I’ll have a beer.” We recently celebrated our 14th wedding anniversary –14 years happily married. Well I’m happy, she’s married. It hasn’t always been so tickety-boo

YENDA IPA 5.4% AV, 330ml bottle Available from Cellarbrations Brightwater Marketplace, Parklands Marketplace, Wises Road, Buderim and Bellvista Tavern. You can hear Todd Widdicombe on Mix FM.

mind you. A few years back, I forgot our wedding anniversary and she was mad as! Not that it’s easy to tell when a woman’s mad about something. I mean what are the signs that a woman’s angry? She’s quiet, she’s yelling, she acts the same, she acts different. She ignores you, she murders you in your sleep. . . I know right, it’s hard to work it out. I missed our special day and Michelle was all over me like Clive Palmer on a deep fried ham and cheese croissant. I said, “Listen babe, I’m so sorry I missed our anniversary, let me make it up to you. I’ll get you anything you want, anything at all.” She said, “I want a divorce.” Straightaway I thought, “Bugger, I wasn’t planning on spending that much!” Needless to say, plenty of apologies and 300 bucks worth of Lorna Jane later (which by the way is two items – it’s like Lorna Jane gym gear is the movie candy bar of the fitness world. . . does Lorna have any idea what a sports bra cost anywhere else in the world?), everything was all good and thankfully, Michelle saw the funny side of forgetting our anniversary. She’s really got a tops sense

of humour my wife, she always laughs during our lovemaking no matter what she’s reading. So back to happy families, for as my dad John says, ‘Keeping the missus happy isn’t half the battle, it’s the entire war’. Having said that one of his other favourite sayings is, ‘There we were, surrounded by indians, three versus 1000. . . the toughest three we ever fought’. He’s a funny dude, my dad. I’ve just been working on the Goldy and he rang me and said, “Now I’ve been worried about you being on the Gold Coast son with all those drugs around.” I laughed for five minutes and said, “Dad I’m 40 years old and you’re giving me a chat on drugs, I love that you’re worried about me, no need to stress my dealer’s a good dude, his name’s Terry. Terry White. He’s where I get my Nurofen Zavance from, or if I know it’s gonna be a big weekend, he’ll source some high quality Osteo Panadol for me.” Parents never stop worrying. Before he hung up the phone he simply said, “Mate while you’re there just stick to beer.” Best advice ever!

I’ve loved beer since Caitlyn Jenner was a boy and it just so happens both Dad and I spent some time last week with the awesome lads from Yenda, the signature beers of the Australian Brewing Company. Yenda has a cracking range of brews and it’s a real testament to their master brewers that even my least favourite of their range is still a ripper. The Yenda India Pale Ale is an Australian style IPA sporting a big attractive hops aroma with large fruity, citrus and berry character and just the right malt complexity, making it a must for lovers of a solid IPA. At 5.4 per cent AV it’s a big beer for a big weekend. Usually, I swerve an IPA like a Biggest Loser contestant swerves salad, but this one goes all right. My Dad John thinks it’s a cracker. I give the Yenda IPA a big taste 3.5 out of 5 thumbs up.

BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO SURVIVING THE MELBOURNE CUP 1. Buy your ticket early – there’s nothing worse than having nowhere to go on the big day. 2. Arrange transport – if you are going to have some bubbles make sure you catch a cab, organise a lift from a friend or use public transport. 3. Place your bets early – don’t wait for the race caller to start naming the horses as they go into barrier before you place your bets. 4. Dress to impress – spring racing

is all about style and fashion so make the most of it – wear your best frock and of course a stunning hat or fascinator for a day of fun and frivolity. 5. Plan the after party venue – before you leave home in the morning decide where you are going to go after the races are run. 6. Have fun – there’s simply no other day like it on the calendar so enjoy it – you won’t be able to do it again for another 12 months.

Staying power Melbourne Cup is a long day – so choose makeup that will keep up the pace to avoid the midafternoon meltdown. Use professional quality foundations from Australian brands such as Gorgeous Cosmetics or Lust Minerals that are made for all-day wear. Keep makeup classic and avoid trends like ‘strobing’, which will have your dewy foundation looking greasy by mid-afternoon. Follow foundation basics and use a mattifying primer under your foundation base and a powder puff to press oil-absorbing powder over your foundation to set and seal.

Must Have Our number one makeup must-have for Melbourne Cup is the LIPSENCE semi-permanent lip colour – a unique lip colour that won’t smudge, bleed or rub off and has a moisturising top coat for glossy shine. Perfect for race days, with all the air-kissing and champagne drinking, this lipstick colour will not wear off and the cute little takeaway mini gloss is perfect to pop in the clutch for all day shine.

RETIREMENT PROMOTION

NO PLACE LIKE HOME Seasoned travellers find this over 50s community has the edge.

A

fter spending two years travelling across Australia, former local residents Lyn and Stephen Lamble found the decision to return to the Sunshine Coast and purchase a home at Nature’s Edge Over 50s community one of the easiest decisions they have ever made. “For nearly two years we travelled across Australia and while we were enjoying our new experiences we also looked at each area in terms of being a potential retirement base. The more places we visited, the sooner it became clearer that the Sunshine Coast was one of the very best places to live in retirement. “It’s just too cold in winter down south and there is the added cost of heating and maintaining a winter wardrobe of warm clothes while further north, the tropics are too hot and humid in summer. West Australia is really beautiful but it’s too remote and very expensive,” Stephen says. Lyn said the Sunshine Coast has a rare blend of excellent health and

medical facilities, a strong education base, good shopping with plenty of competition and choice, quality restaurants and some of the best beaches in the world. “We looked at retirement villages and over 50s communities in every state and territory and specifically on the Sunshine Coast, and Nature’s Edge was the stand out. The location is perfectly central to everything and the rainforest setting attracts a stunning range of birdlife literally on our backdoor step. We also love that there are no exit fees and the recreation centre and storage area for our motorhome will be welcome additions. “We also love the design of our home, it’s modern and comfortable, well insulated and has fantastic energy efficient elements which ensures our long terms running costs are kept to a minimum. We also have our own vegie garden and there is even a free dam water to keep all the plants well watered. “One of the biggest plusses is that we can shut the door and head off in the

motorhome and keep exploring the country without having to worry about maintenance and mowing the lawn while knowing the home is safe and secure,” Lyn says. Nature’s Edge Sales Manager Lyn Morrison said the project continues to be a hive of activity with new residents moving in on a daily basis while civil works on the premium, 45 elevated lots in the third stage release are well underway. “The elevated lots are surrounded by untouched rainforest and a magnificent 3-metre-plus high rock feature wall. Each lot is individually sized and some have larger backyards with a rainforest backdrop which provides privacy in a tranquil setting,” Lyn says. “It’s certainly our premium release and we have around 45% of this stage already under contract and interest is very strong in the remaining lots.” Meanwhile plans for the $2 million state of the art Nature’s Edge Leisure Centre are being finalised with construction expected to commence

early next year. Lyn says the Leisure Centre is a huge drawcard for buyers and will become the hub of activity for residents at Nature’s Edge. “We’re finding that most of our buyers really embrace an active lifestyle so we know it’s going to be hugely popular — and why wouldn’t you spend your time being active and doing the things you love as opposed to doing maintenance and mowing lawns?” Lyn says. The Leisure Centre will feature a bowling green, tennis court, pool, spa, gym, massage area and a media room. There will also be a leisure club with a bar, dance floor as well as a dining and entertainment area.

To arrange an inspection call Lyn Morrison at the Natures Edge sales office on 1800 218 898 or visit naturesedgebuderim.com.au.

WHAT YOU WANT Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the RANGE ROVER SPORT SVR

T

here are cars the world needs. And there are cars the world wants. And then there’s this one. The Range Rover Sport SVR. Remarkable, no doubt. But necessary? Give me some time to think about that. Let’s be honest. Does the world really

need a massively powerful, incredibly capable, impossibly plush four-wheeldrive that’s part sports car, part limousine and part go-anywhere bush basher? Well, necessary or not, it’s here. The fastest, most powerful and most “dynamically focused machine ever to wear the famous badge. The purpose of this machine?

Well, probably for no other reason than so the Brits can put those arrogant Germans back in their place. If the Range Rover has always been the apex predator of the luxury SUV market, its claim to the crown has come under serious assault in recent years by rivals like the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, BMW’s X5 and, perhaps most of all, by Porsche’s

rather surprising Cayenne. The Rangie SVR is the grand old British brand’s way of slapping them down. While few can match the Range Rover’s combination of supreme luxury and go-anywhere performance, the Germans have stolen some of the limelight with their high-performance variants – like the ML63 AMG, X5M and, of course, the Cayenne Turbo. This car puts Range Rover squarely into that frame. It’s rarified territory, mind you, with a price tag soaring well past the $200,000 mark. But as a feat of engineering – and as a motor car with perhaps a greater range of capabilities than anything else on the market – this is quite an achievement. Consider this. The SVR tips the scales at a rather considerable 2335 kilograms – thanks to its granite-like construction (albeit with plenty of lightweight metal), the lashings of leather and forests of polished timber, and the sheer bulk of its massive engine and bulletproof drivetrain. Yet, thanks to an extraordinary 405 kilowatt, 680Nm, supercharged five-litre V8 engine, it will scream from a standstill to the speed limit in a rather ridiculous 4.7 seconds. continued over>

MOTORING

<from previous page In testing, it has lapped the famous Nurburgring circuit in Germany in eight minutes and 14 seconds. Yes, they’ve tested their SUV on the world’s most notorious racetrack. Yet in normal family driving mode, it’s comfortable, compliant and as luxurious as we’ve come to expect from a Range Rover. Only when you select dynamic mode on the centre console does the SVR (the badge from Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations team) really bear its claws. Gearshift paddles help extract even more verve from that big throbbing V8 – blipping the throttle on the downshift as the exhaust crackles and pops like the most raucous of sports cars. The sheer force of its acceleration, and the nimbleness of its handling, not only belie its substantial bulk – but seem to defy the laws of physics. If that sounds impressive, keep in mind that this Rangie still has the brand’s legendary capability to crawl over rocks, wade its way through knee-deep mud and slush and plough through soft sand, should the need ever arise. So, who will buy this ballistic behemoth? Not many people, I suspect. Not because it isn’t worthy – but

simply because the Land Rover folk will probably only bring a limited supply into the country. It’s not perfect, though. Allow yourself to indulge in that pulverising acceleration too much and you’ll find the fuel gauge diving towards empty at an alarming rate. Official consumption is a respectable 12.8L/100km but you can double that in a heartbeat. The cockpit is beautifully presented and ergonomically sound. The instrument panel uses virtual technology to display the tacho and speedo on a video display screen. It cleverly highlights only your actual speed and the increments immediately above and below so you can read it more quickly. Sensible, considering this car is a license to print speeding fines. Outside, this car is remarkably unassuming. It looks big, imposing and

beautifully styled – but there’s precious little to indicate the menace that resides within. There are a couple of enhanced breather vents behind the front wheel arches, and two more vents in the bonnet to make sure the supercharger is well ventilated. The standard 21-inch alloys are huge but not gaudy. The quad exhaust pipes at the rear are the only other real clue that this is not your ordinary Range Rover. Anything but ordinary. There’s a button on the centre console that allows you to open the baffles on those quad exhausts, so you can hear that glorious V8 at its best. Selecting Dynamic mode on the drive selector also activates that wondrous exhaust sound – along with massively sharping throttle response, handling characteristics and putting the eightspeed transmission into full attack mode. In that format, the SVR is a truly breathtaking piece of kit. It literally jumps when you punch the throttle – as startlingly as just about any highperformance machine we’ve tested in this space. Hard to believe it’s such a big, civilised thing. In short, everything you could ever need. Plus everything you might want.

RANGE ROVER SPORT SVR HOW BIG? It’s a full-sized SUV with plush seating for five adults, plus a cavernous cargo area in the back. Yet through the use of brilliant engineering and suspension electronics, it feels much smaller and more nimble to drive. Clever. HOW FAST? Ridiculously so. Maximum speed of 260km/h is electronically governed – just as well because it would probably exceed that. HOW THIRSTY? Very, but people spending $220-grand on an off-roader generally aren’t worried about how much it costs to fill it up. HOW MUCH? The SVR costs $218,500 before onroads and other charges, which is more expensive than rivals like Mercedes’ ML63 and BMW’s X5M.

ARIA HITS HIGH NOTE

The public will soon get the chance to have its say on a new $210 million development in Mooloolaba.

I

n the coming days the ARIA Property Group will relodge its amended plans to its development application for a $210 million project on the corner of Mooloolaba Esplanade and River Esplanade. The developer is removing the rooftop amenities from the original plans to reduce the height of the building following concerns expressed by the Sunshine Coast Council.

ARIA’s Michael Hurley says the unique design of building, which will include 159 short-term accommodation units, follows a design competition which included four leading Australian and international architects. “Eilenberg Fraser was selected for its beautiful, flowing, curvaceous building,” Hurley says. “It was also the design most sympathetic to the surrounding

quiet retreat on 17 acres

buildings and neighbours, and will set a benchmark for quality on the Sunshine Coast. “This will be a five-star short-term accommodation building, which we will be targeting a five-star hotel operator to run. “Another critical component of the development will be bringing high quality food and beverage offerings to Mooloolaba, activating Mooloolaba not only during the day but at night as well. “We will also be looking to bring national and internationally recognised retailers and brands to Mooloolaba, like we have done in Brisbane. “We support the Sunshine Coast Council’s Place Making Mooloolaba Master Plan, which includes the option of closing the road in front of our proposed development site to turn the precinct into a world-class park.” The project will see $62.4 million of direct expenditure over the 18-month build. More than 850 direct and indirect jobs will be created during construction, along with 262 direct and indirect

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

Onshore, onshore, onshore – yep, weeks of bad conditions ahead. What to do? Golf, restring your old guitar, buy a new board? Whatever it is you won’t be surfing! Moffat Beach now has its own beer. Matt from Blackwater Café has just installed his own micro brewery. It was either that or a house, so you can imagine how excited his wife is…NOT! Reminds me of that famous Kevin Bloody Wilson song Does your Dad own a brewery? I’ll leave out the rest of the lyrics! Have a great weekend.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] With Venus, Mars and Jupiter all visiting your wellbeing zone, learn to love the things in life that are good for you. Like nutritious meals, exercise and spending time in nature. If you blurt out the first thing on your mind then you’ll spend the rest of the week patching it up.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] When dealing with others, being kind – and offering sensible advice – is a winning double. The Venus/Pluto trine encourages deep emotions, intense connections and plenty of passion. So make sure you get up-close and personal with someone special this week.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] Research projects and paying attention to details are highlighted, as Mercury and Pluto activate your study gene. Your attention span will also be tested, when a project demands that you concentrate. If you focus your mind, you’ll get the job done.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Are you having romantic rumbles or platonic problems? The more stubborn you are, the more frustrating the week will be. Strive to be cooperative, and have the confidence to speak from the heart and say what’s really on your mind.

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] With Venus, Mars and Jupiter all jumping through your wealth zone, tap into the abundance that is all around you – and not just on a financial level. It’s time to combine your creativity with your strength, so that you shine for all the world to see.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Many Virgos will be charming as you make those around you feel extra special. Venus stimulates your love of the good things, as you enjoy company, beautiful surroundings, the arts or fine food. But avoid the tendency to worry about something that is totally out of your control.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Avoid procrastinating, dithering, and sitting on the sidelines! With Saturn in your social media zone, you have to work extra hard to get your message out to the world so push yourself to post and publish; socialise and circulate; converse and communicate.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Are you being obsessively private? Scorpios can be very secretive, mysterious and enigmatic but avoid being a lone wolf – or should that be a lone Scorpion? Just remember that what you hide from others, you can also hide from yourself!

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Expect an entertaining ride, as your emotions go up and down. Is a friend, colleague or acquaintance being incredibly demanding? Don’t be too hard on them … they have a lot on their plate. Friday is fabulous for financial matters but you’ll feel a bit stir-crazy on the weekend.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Are you obsessed about a personal or professional issue? Avoid being short-sighted and making [uncharacteristically] impulsive moves. A calm, considered approach – with a view to the long-term – is the sensible way for clever Capricorns to go.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Have you got a problem that’s bothering you? Worrying about it will get you nowhere. Friday is a fabulous day to slow down and look within, as you meditate and contemplate. Listen to the wisdom of your inner voice – your intuition will point you in the right direction.

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] When it comes to plans for the future, you’re full of innovative ideas and creative schemes. But can you tell the difference between a delicious daydream and a dodgy delusion? Pluto demands that you dig deep and set substantial goals that are worthy of your talents.

THE LAST WORD

BOTOX FOR POLITICIANS The fastest way for a political leader to look younger is to lose office, writes Richard O’Leary.

H

ave you ever wanted to look ten years younger without plastic surgery? Well I have a method I’ve never seen fail. Firstly you must get elected to local, state or federal politics and rise to at least the rank of mayor, minister, premier or prime minister. Then work 100-hour weeks for years on end while constantly under the glare of the public and media spotlight as your youthful looks head south faster than your popularity. When you have wrinkles on your wrinkles you are ready for your facelift – but first you must lose face by either resigning, or getting kicked out by your party or the public. And hey presto, within a few short months the end of the stress, speculation and seismic shifts in your fortunes will erase your political mask and you will be reborn. I developed this theory while working

for a couple of chief ministers in the Northern Territory who aged before my eyes while they were in office, but discovered the fountain of youth after being deposed. My thesis was confirmed this week when I sat at Campbell Newman’s table for the Sunshine Coast launch of his new book. He truly did look like a New-man. He’d lost that look of a tightly wound spring, ready to launch into any topic or issue, whether invited to or not. He looked years younger and dare I say it, a little more human. It may sound a tad trite, but it’s something we can often forget about politicians – they are husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, sons and daughters. They go home after a day at the office, put their kids to bed, wash the dishes, and hang the clothes on the washing line. It may explain why, when you ask

politicians what their first emotion was after losing, and if they’re being completely frank, they will tell you it is relief. A burden has been lifted. There is no heavy weight on Newman’s shoulders these days but he continues to do the heavy lifting for his former colleagues who won their seats at the last election. When I asked him why the Sunshine Coast didn’t get more from his government when it had such a strong representation in Cabinet, he simply replied: “What part of Queensland was benefitting? The point is there was no money.” And for a split second his game face returned, but then it was gone, replaced by the smile of a man who only has to worry about how many copies of his biography he will sell.
