ast week’s bright and beautiful strawberry cover image certainly grabbed our community’s attention. Positive feedback on the photo, and our support of local producers and growers, is still pouring in. I believe this is a true indication of the Sunshine Coast’s commitment to our food and agricultural industry – an industry that is currently valued at $700 million and predicted to grow to $1 billion within the next three years. That’s a pretty impressive figure. In this edition of My Weekly Preview (which is also locally-owned and homegrown!) we continue to celebrate our region’s rich and diverse products. This time we’ve moved away from food to something a little smoother on the palate, not to mention thirst-quenching. The craft beer movement has taken the Sunshine Coast by storm, with 13 brewing companies based locally and we hear that this number is set to grow before the close of 2018. Turn to page 10 to read the story. Also this week, we feature one of our region’s many hardworking strawberry farmers. As Leigh Robshaw discovered while chatting with Di West of Suncoast Harvest, growing one of Queensland’s most loved fruits is no picnic. CRAFT BEER REVOLUTION
Locals and tourists alike are loving the Sunshine Coast’s burgeoning craft beer breweries. ‘Beer tourism’ is attracting new visitors to the region and locals are snapping up new employment opportunities. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

’d like to introduce you to Iggy Hop, Social Jam, Fun Manchu, Hipsterdoofus, Voodoo Lady, Josh Porter and Deadbeat Boyfriend. No, this is not the line-up of the latest music festival. These are the names of some of Matt Wilson’s creations. He uses deliberate ingredient selection, scientific precision, artistic flair, aromatic prowess and literary genius to bring his craft beers to life. Mr Wilson is the founder and head brewer at the award-winning Moffat Beach Brewing Co and was one of the first venue owners in the region to take a punt at stocking only craft beers when he opened his doors six years ago. There were only a handful of microbreweries on the Coast at that stage, but the industry has flourished and the region is now home to 13, with more set to open before the end of the year. Although Deloitte research places craft beer volume at a maximum of three per cent across the nation, it is predicted to increase at a rate of five per cent each year for the next five years, far eclipsing the 1.7 per cent growth of the traditional commercial beer market. Mr Wilson says this is due to several factors, including growing consumer demand for sustainable practices and more people

consciously supporting local businesses and their products. “There’s nothing like drinking a fresh brew at the place it was made,” he says. “I made a conscious decision to put craft beer in because it was not mainstream. When we first started working with the conservative Queensland palate it was slow going, but now the same customers are drinking nothing but Double IPAs (India Pale Ales), so I have
“Coast brewers are making beer with local produce and it’s perfect for drinking in our climate ” definitely seen a shift in how people are drinking and how people’s palates have evolved in the time we’ve been there.” One of the new kids on the block, Glass House Brewery owner Simon Michelangeli, is preparing to open his establishment at Forest Glen with a 200-seat venue and a brewery out the back. Mr Michelangeli moved up from Melbourne seeking the ideal location for his
venture and found it on the Coast. His friend and brewer with 15 years’ experience, Paul Sanders, will be taking control of the vats to produce signature brews that will be “more approachable” for craft beer novices. “I think good beer is appreciated anywhere and while there’s a greater awareness and understanding of craft beer in Melbourne, what I see is the Sunshine Coast readily adapting some of the trends we see in Melbourne and Sydney and putting a unique local spin on it,” he says. “From a Sunshine Coast point of view, the number of beers on tap has increased ten-fold in the past five to 10 years and we are now seeing a huge jump in the volume and quality of beer being produced here. “While for 95 per cent of beer drinkers, craft beer is still foreign, Coast brewers are making beer with local produce, and it’s perfect for drinking in our climate. They are more approachable than some of the experimental beers.” Mr Michelangeli says craft beer has become an art form and it is an important industry for the Sunshine Coast economy. “People don’t realise how many people are employed locally through the craft beer industry. Major commercial brewers employ the equivalent of half a person for every million litres of beer they produce,
whereas in the craft beer industry, every million litres gives a job to between 30 and 40 people,” he says. According to a 2017 IBA/Essential Economics study, more than 65 per cent of craft breweries are based outside capital cities and almost three quarters of people working in Australia’s beer industry are employed in the craft sector. Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Simon Latchford says this makes the industry both an attractive economic booster for the region, as well as a growing tourism magnet.

COVER STORY “Craft beer has brewed up a new market niche for the Sunshine Coast’s tourism sector and breweries are now an integral component of the Sunshine Coast food and produce scene,’’ he says. “In addition, it is pleasing to see many brewers building close working relationships with local farmers, not just for disposal of spent grain for cattle, but for sourcing local fruit and produce for seasonal beers or to serve through their kitchens. “We have a remarkably talented group of brewers across the Coast who are starting to become known around the country. “Earlier this year, Moffat Beach Brewing Co won the Champion Small Brewer of Australia award in the annual BrewCon – Australian Brewers Conference and Awards, held in Sydney. They also won two gold medals, as did Brouhaha at Maleny. Macleod Brewing Co in Maleny, Sunshine Brewery and Land & Sea in Noosa all won silver. “What makes ‘beer tourism’ so attractive for visitors is that it provides a really rich and interesting insight into the character of the destination. Brewers are invariably passionate about their trade and love sharing stories about the trials and tribulations of setting up a brewery, and the sweat and tears that go into every brew, as well as sharing experimental and seasonal beers with visitors.” Events like the Sunshine Coast Craft Beer and Cider Festival and the inaugural Oktoberfest are providing another reason for people to visit, stay and spend in our region. “We are seeing new and innovative recipes coming out all the time and six new venues have opened since the last festival. “A number of our brewers are promising to bring specially crafted festival beers for punters to try,” Mr Latchford adds. With a need to make their mark on the industry and stand out, innovation and entrepreneurship are key characteristics of brewery owners across the region. In fact, there are four craft beer businesses listed as finalists across three different categories of the Sunshine Coast Business Awards; Brouhaha and Moffat Beach Brewing Co in agribusiness, TAPS Mooloolaba

in hospitality and Sunshine Coast Craft Beer Tours in the tours and transfers category. Thinking outside the square has been a necessity for Matt Hepburn and Christen McGarry, who founded Your Mates six years ago with a home brew recipe Mr McGarry created. Without the capital to establish their own brewing facility, Mr Hepburn and Mr McGarry became “gypsy brewers,” using the facilities of other local establishments to create their signature Larry and Donnie beers to begin selling wholesale three years ago. Their appearance on Channel 10’s Shark Tank in May appealing for investment to allow them to establish their own brewing facility didn’t see any of the high-profile panellists decide to sink funds into the project, but it did give them national exposure that saw them go on to secure funding. Mr Hepburn says they have a confirmed site, but cannot release any further information at this stage. “We’ve had a huge amount of interest in our product, but we are capped at production at the moment, we literally can’t produce

enough beer,” he says. “We have tripled in size every year over the last three years and we are definitely at the stage where we need to invest in a facility, get our own equipment and build our HQ for Your Mates. “For us to have everything under one roof, we will be able show off what we can actually do with 10 beers on tap and create a community hangout where visitors can come and enjoy themselves. We are aiming to be one of the biggest breweries in Queensland down the track.” Your Mates fans will be pleased to know they are planning to release another two new “mates” to sell alongside Larry and Donnie by the end of the year and Mr Hepburn says “there could be a lady thrown into the mix.” Sunshine Coast Brewery Tours founder Josh Donohoe says he is ecstatic to have watched as the region evolved from the “one-dimensional” beers from the large commercial brewers to a wide variety including pale ales, stouts, saisons, witbiers and many more. “Beer is also fun. We will be teaming up with Brouhaha at the December craft beer festival to create a dessert bar to offer beer sorbet, milk stout affogatos and ‘gummy beers’. Save the date Oktoberfest will take over the Kawana Sports Precinct on October 20 and promises to deliver the biggest beer hall the Coast has ever seen. The Craft Beer and Cider Festival attracted 4500 people at its inaugural event last year and event manager Adam Hazelgrove says they are anticipating closer to 6000 at the Kawana Sports Precinct on December 1 as they showcase the rarest and sought-after creations from more than 50 hand-picked local, Australian and New Zealand brewers and cideries.

As My Weekly Preview’s resident beer reviewer, Todd Widdicombe shares his thoughts on the Sunshine Coast’s craft beer scene. I don’t always drink beer… wait a second… no, I do. It’s pretty much what keeps me up every afternoon. I reckon people these days are all over craft beer like expensive leather on a rich man’s foot and even though craft beer only makes up a tiny percentage of the entire Australian market, it’s hard to believe because there is so much of it around. In the past five years, the Sunshine Coast in particular has smashed it for embracing craft beer. Back in the day, they used to have what they’d call a microbrewery, with boutique beers that only posh people would drink. Meanwhile, us cats were on the Carlton Draft and VB, which I have devoted entire weekends to. I respect beer, it has been helping ugly blokes like me find love since 1897 and I will always love a good pale ale. A great milk stout or a really dark ale has a similar ambience about it as drinking a fine wine and since you can’t actually drink bacon, it’s a good alternative. I’ve heard some people say there are too many craft breweries around, but that’s like saying ‘there are too many sprinkles on my ice-cream’. Get out and try to the Mudjimba Middish from Sunshine Brewery or the Pipeline Pale Ale from 10 Toes and you will be changed forever. There are 24 hours in a day and 24 craft beers per carton. Coincidence? I think not.

TACKLING CANCER TOGETHER The McKeown family is inviting the Coast community to join them in a fundraiser for brain cancer research. “I’ve lost hair on one side of my head, which is not so much of a drama,” he quips. “There have been so many people including my family, friends, medical staff and others on the peripherals that have been an amazing support for me, so I felt that we needed to recognise this in a way to thank people while raising money for an organisation that raises awareness of brain cancer. “Cancers in general touch everyone’s lives, so this is a chance to take a moment to think about the effect it has on everyone and to raise money for a future cure for cancer.

ust a few months after the highs of seeing his daughters represent Australia in the pool at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Sholto McKeown’s world came to a staggering halt. On June 4, he was diagnosed with a grade 4 glioblastoma brain tumour and had surgery four days later to remove 95 per cent of the tumour. He is now nearing the end of a four-week break from chemotherapy before treatment recommences and instead of focusing on his own plight, Mr McKeown and his family are preparing to pay it forward for the emotional and financial support they received from the Sunshine Coast community following the earth-shattering diagnosis. Family friend Darlene Reed contacted the McKeowns with the offer to host a fundraising concert for the family, but Sharon McKeown says they had already been so overwhelmed with support after daughter Taylor started a Go Fund Me page that attracted $17,000 in donations. So, they have decided to accept the offer of the concert, which will feature 2017 The Voice finalist Ellen Reed, but will instead raise funds for the Mark Hughes Foundation
for Brain Cancer Research. Mr Mckeown tells My Weekly Preview the generosity of the wider community “absolutely bamboozled” and “stunned” him. “Initially, I didn’t want to be supported that way. At first it was kind of embarrassing, because I’ve been proud of being able to support myself and my family,” he admits. “I was so overwhelmed and never thought it would get to the heights that it did. It has paid for my surgery and radiation, which is an absolute blessing. It really helped us out in a difficult time.” While Mrs McKeown has been coordinating the fundraising concert, Mr McKeown says he has been keeping a positive mindset. “It was a seven-hour surgery and it’s early days for any illness really, but the only follow-up scan I’ve had so far was a good scan,” he says. Mr McKeown says he has been following a strict diet and while he is connecting with other cancer patients to provide moral support, he is also allowing himself plenty of time to rest, in order to combat the fatigue brought on by chemotherapy.

BANKFOOT’S BIRTHDAY Heritage games such as skipping, quoits and competitions for the best beard and best pioneering outfit will be some of the features of Bankfoot House’s 150th birthday celebrations. Bankfoot House is the oldest family residence in the Glass House Mountains district. It was established by Mary and William Grigor in 1868 to service the Cobb and Co coaches travelling between Brisbane and the Gympie goldfields. Friends of Bankfoot House President Ron Gillinder says official events on October 14 include the unveiling of a plaque commemorating 150 years and the launch of the Friends’ book titled Bankfoot House – 150 Years on Old Gympie Road. A replica Cobb and Co coach will be displayed and a whip-cracking demonstration will also take place. Mr Gillinder says several enthusiastic members of the Queensland Veteran Car Club will drive their pre-1919 vehicles from Rocky Creek campsite near Landsborough along Old Gympie Road to Bankfoot House and there will be tours of Bankfoot House with knowledgeable volunteers. JOINING FORCES TO ADDRESS ADHD Parents of children with ADHD can often feel isolated and confused about the best path of treatment to pursue, so the Beyond All Limits ADHD Conference could be just what the doctor ordered. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.
W
hen Paula Burgess’ son was four he was expelled from his daycare. He had been diagnosed with ADHD and at that time, there were not a lot of strategies out there for his teachers to implement to help her son fit into the traditional system. Mrs Burgess, who is an ADHD coach, decided to create a support and information network for families with ADHD children and Beyond the Maze was born. Many more support services have emerged in the past five years, but since every child that is diagnosed with ADHD is different, finding the perfect strategy that suits the physical, mental and emotional needs of the child can be a lengthy and costly experience. Mrs Burgess created the Beyond All Limits ADHD Conference to bring together a cross-section of specialists from medical doctors and counsellors, to yoga instructors and occupational therapists, giving parents, carers and teachers an opportunity to hear a variety of viewpoints during an entire day for the cost of less than one standard specialist session. The next one will be held on the Sunshine Coast. “The Sunshine Coast has a very holistic outlook on things. Because medication is traditionally such a huge thing for ADHD, I wanted to have a doctor there to address this, but also balance that out with other options as well,” Mrs Burgess says. “This is our third conference now, with one in Brisbane and one held in Newcastle and we’ve seen a lot of head-nodding,
parents seek a more holistic approach. “Yoga can play a role with children with ADHD, because it helps them to extend their focus and attention spans while bringing them back to the present,’’ she says. “Often their minds are so stimulated, that they don’t get the chance to pause and when this happens at school, they start to fall behind. “Once I build a relationship and find out what resonates for each individual child, we can then work on those skills and begin to introduce strategies that can be extended out into their wider environment, so parents can use them at home and teachers can use them in the classroom.” Ms McIlveen, who is also a qualified social worker, says yoga helps children to get into “relaxation mode”. “This is where we can develop the parasympathetic nervous system. The more emotionally in tune they are, the greater their ability to process their environment in a calmer manner that is not going to cause them stress and anxiety,” she says.

FOR LOVE, NOT MONEY Being a strawberry grower is no picnic and after the recent controversy, it has just become a lot harder. My Weekly Preview chats to a local grower about what goes into producing the sweet red fruit we all know and love. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

i West works seven days a week, 52 weeks a year. She owns Suncoast Harvest at Bells Creek, a 130-acre strawberry farm that employs 120 people, including pickers, packers, administration staff, tractor and forklift operators, and dispatch managers. She had a million punnets in the ground that had to be sprayed out after the controversy, but she’s more upset at having to lay off 100 staff, and you can hear it in her voice. “I know every single one of my employees by name and I greet them every day,” she says. “I like to have a good rapport with my staff and that builds a lot of happiness and respect – happy workers are really productive. We look after our staff, so it really hurt me to stop the season like that, because they should be putting a lot of money in their pockets about now. This has hurt my staff, more than me personally and that upsets me a lot.” Apart from losing her produce, she will now have to invest in metal detectors and new tamper-proof packaging. But she’s not giving up on strawberries. “It’s my father’s farm, but he’s 73 now and doesn’t know anything about running a modern farming enterprise,” she says. “He’s a proud Maltese man and he doesn’t want to go on a pension; he doesn’t see that as the sum total of his life. I understand that, so here I am. I am his Centrelink. I’m not a young person either. I have come and started to manage this operation and it’s huge – 120 staff. That’s a big business.” Mrs West’s family has been farming in the Sunshine Coast region since the 1960s, beginning with tobacco and moving into vegetables and small crops. “We had the best upbringing ever growing up in the Glass House Mountains. We had lots of fun, lots of parties,” she says. “It was all farms back then, little family farms. I grew up with all the Italian and foreign farmers’ kids.
“We’d sit under the mango tree and have a few beers. We had a really great life, no hassles. Life was so easy and uncomplicated, and everything was cheap.” The family began growing strawberries in the early 2000s and it has been a steep learning curve. “I applied my knowledge of science and organic farming methods to a large-scale commercial production system and the quality and yield is our reward for looking after the environment. “We start planting mid-March and start picking by late April. It steadily builds to a crescendo by the time we hit July and August. Normally, we would pick a semi-trailer load of fruit every day – about 24 pallets.” At the start of each season, Mrs West orders runners from Stanthorpe, which arrive in stages. “I love planting. We have to put the sprinklers on and we have a lot of fun. We have a lot of Asian, Japanese and Korean workers, because we can’t get enough local workers, and I laugh because they have their shoes all lined up at the edge of the muddy
field. Being a small European family, we work alongside our staff. We don’t sit in the house and give orders. “We give the strawberries a heap of love and attention and lots of water and within about four weeks, they’ll start flowering. The leaves will die and make new leaves and new roots. We cut the old leaves off, so they don’t present any disease. “We weed by hand because of our proximity to waterways and the ocean. I refuse to use sprays. It’s expensive, but I don’t like harming my environment. Healthy soil is a living thing – you can’t just nuke it with stuff. You have to love it. “We start picking four to six weeks after we plant. When we pick, everyone has an individual barcode ID. They carry 10 trays on a trolley to the weighing station, they weigh them in and scan their ID and boom, that’s how they record their weights and that’s how we work out their pay scales.” Mrs West says her fastest packers earn $70 to $80 an hour, but it takes a couple of
seasons to achieve that speed. After being picked and weighed, the strawberries are stacked in a cage and fast-chilled before being shipped out to stores. “We might start work at 6.30am and the packers might start at 10.30. I try not to work past 2pm in the field if I can avoid it. Some people work their workers from sun up to sundown.” Mrs West, who earned a Bachelor of Agricultural Economics from the University of Queensland, says she’s a “hopeless” strawberry picker and prefers to work in administration. “I always wanted to be a graphic artist,” she says. “How far off the track did that go? I also like accounting and business management and was studying for my certificate five in accounting when my Dad wanted me to come back to farming. I had to throw it out the window.” Mrs West also owns a banana farm with her husband in Wamuran. “As banana farmers, we’re tiny little guys. We ripen our bananas and sell them at farmers markets at Kawana and Noosa. We love it, that’s our life. “There are hundreds of customers we’ve known for years. They come out to the farm at Bells Creek during strawberry season because they miss me. They come out and give me a hug – they’re like my family.” While farming is her life, she says it’s increasingly difficult. “The cost of compliance and regulation and everything we have to do is not paid back to us. Farming is no longer little family farms where we all got out there picking and packing. It’s now big business and the prices are too low and production costs too high. We do make a profit, but I don’t bother taking any of the money because we have to keep investing in new technologies and better facilities. Who wants to work 120 hours a week for no money and spend every school holiday doing your BAS? “No way in the world would I want my children or grandchildren to do it,” she says. “We’re the last generation of farmers.”

TROLLING THE MORCOMBES
PUSHING BUTTONS
Sami Muirhead says after all the Morcombes have been through, they don’t deserve to be trolled, but she reckons they’re tough enough to handle it.
O
nline trolls make me sick. Most of us have taken such joy in seeing Bruce and Denise Morcombe become grandparents for the first time and cheered their well-deserved happiness. Their rays of sunshine were so long overdue and so much warmer after standing in a tornado of heartache for so many years after Daniel was abducted and murdered 15 years ago. Last week, one of their boys married. On the day of Dean’s wedding, Denise tweeted a beautiful photo of Daniel playing with his two brothers in the snow when they were all not much bigger than toddlers and wrote: “My boys are now grown up or gone…enjoy time with them.” The message stopped me in my tracks. It made me determined to be more present in more moments in my kids’ lives. What a reminder to enjoy every day and to appreciate we are lucky to be able to watch them grow up and leave our nests. Daniel was never given that chance. You would assume everyone would wish Bruce and Denise nothing but happiness on their boy’s wedding day, but this was unfortunately not the case. Trolls were quick and ruthless to cut the Morcombes down and attack Denise over the honest and beautiful tweet. There were, of course, positive messages of love and support, but it still makes me furious that anyone would bother to write such dribble that they would be far too gutless to say to
the Morcombes’ face. I met the Morcombes in the first press conference they ever did and we all thought Daniel would turn up safe and not harmed. How wrong we were, and every time I returned to their tranquil Palmwoods property for those dreaded press conferences, I could see how harassed their minds had become, as fear and terror took over their thoughts. Denise had the eyes of a tormented mother. There is still a special bond with my journalist mates and police who we met during those years. Daniel brought a lot of people together. The Morcombes have been nothing but humble and kind in their dogged determination to help other children. It is largely thanks to their ongoing work promoting stranger danger that so many of our kids still have frequent conversations today about being safe and listening to your gut instinct. The Morcombes have been through enough and given tenfold what the rest of us would have been capable of giving. So to all those gutless trolls: grow a backbone an leave them alone. But of course, the Morcombes don’t need me or anyone to defend them. They are tougher than anyone I know. My favourite quote has always been from Bruce when he addressed the monster who killed his son and said: “You made one monumental mistake that day – you picked on the wrong family.”

Richard O’Leary ponders whether to tell his kids the button at the traffic lights is fake, but doesn’t want to ruin their fun.
L
ike most kids, my boys know how to press the right buttons to get a reaction, usually from their mum or dad. But the buttons they get the most enjoyment out of are the ones you’ll find at traffic lights. We’ll walk up to the crossing and my boys will be fighting over who pushes it first, the most, and the most effectively – that is the one who presses it just before the green man starts flashing to the accompaniment of the ubiquitous beeping sound. It drives me to distraction as they jostle for position and slam the metallic button, oblivious to the glares and sighs of other pedestrians. So I was more interested than most to find out that many of us are pressing the button at traffic lights for no reason at all. It’s been revealed that in many of our capital cities, the busiest traffic lights are automated, which means you may as well poke the person next to you – it will have just as much effect. Apparently the so-called placebo buttons have been around for decades, but no-one in the know thought it was worth telling us. It’s got me thinking about what other things we encounter on a regular basis, but which have no real effect – let’s call them the Placebo Principles. 1. The air safety warning given at the
start of each flight. If that plane starts falling from 40,000 feet, I have serious doubts about whether adopting the right brace position is going to make one iota of difference to your chances of survival. Give me a parachute and I’ll start taking the warning seriously. 2. The greeting at the supermarket checkout. “How are you today?” has never meant less when delivered robotically by a cashier for the hundredth time that morning. Although I recently asked a cashier how she was, and refreshingly her response was anything but a platitude – “I’m on the verge of a nervous breakdown,” she said. 3. Being a Parramatta supporter. This is the ultimate placebo effect. It feels like you follow a footy team; there are players and a coach and games, but you are never really in with a chance of winning anything. The one benefit is you don’t suffer any stress during the finals because your team is rarely in them. The list could go on forever: selecting yes when you are asked whether or not you have read the terms and conditions of your Apple contract, or Australians voting for the Prime Minister and expecting the winner to serve a full term. I don’t know if I’ll tell my boys about the placebo buttons at traffic lights – I may just watch them fight for the right to press them – my joy will be the real deal.

Eskimo Joe frontman Kav Temperley is sharing his sensitive side. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.
K
av Temperley has been a steady part of the Australian rock scene since 1997 as the frontman of Eskimo Joe, and now he is also stepping out with a solo career that will take his fans to calmer waters. Mr Temperley released his debut solo album All Your Devotion on September 28 and following a high-energy Eskimo Joe performance at the Caloundra Music Festival on the weekend, he will return to the Sunshine Coast for a stripped back and raw acoustic performance.
The latest single from the album, Pollyanna, was penned a few years ago as Mr Temperley was working through the breakdown of his marriage at the same time as bandmates Stuart MacLeod and Joel Quartermain decided it was time for Eskimo Joe to take a short break. “A friend once told me that our happiness is always relative, whether we live in a war zone or paradise – our happiness always swings back to the same place. I had just lost my marriage and the band had decided to take a break, all of these things that defined me were now no longer around,” he says. “It was one of the first times in my life I felt like a stranger just rolling along, but I realised that amongst all of this I was a Pollyanna, someone despite the bad news always looks on the bright side. This was a song I was singing to myself to remember to stay light.” Mr Temperley says he wanted to give his first solo project plenty of room to grow and evolve, spending more than two years bringing All Your Devotion to life. “As a songwriter, there were so many songs I had already written that never made it to fruition through Eskimo Joe, but I
decided to go and start from scratch, so I was writing stuff I had been inspired by at the time,” he says. “While Eskimo Joe has always been a big-sounding band with lots of bells and whistles and big stage production, I was seeking something soothing and mellow, like a soothing balm for your ears.” The intimate production has created an opportunity for Mr Temperley to perform in a way he never has before, with just a guitar and a microphone on stage. And he says it will most likely be a once-in-a-lifetime gig. “When you perform with a band on stage, it doesn’t feel appropriate to sit down and tell stories about your songs, but with this style of gig, the story becomes almost as important as the songs themselves,” he says. “The audience can really be a fly on the wall and look into how it was for me to create each sing… I might keep talking forever, but I am going to play plenty of songs.”

BARBECUED HANGER WITH PICKLED ONIONS AND MUSTARD SEEDS INGREDIENTS • 4 hanger steaks • Salt and pepper to taste • Olive oil (to brush steaks) • 1 cup white wine vinegar • ½ cup water • 2 tbsp sugar • 1 tsp salt • 2 tarragon sprigs • 2 thyme sprigs • ¼ cup yellow mustard seeds • 300g red or white pearl onions, peeled
METHOD Combine vinegar, water, sugar, salt, tarragon, and thyme in a heavy saucepan and bring to the boil over high heat. Add mustard seeds, reduce heat to medium, and simmer for about 30 minutes, or until mustard seeds are plump. Transfer mixture to a bowl and set aside to cool. In a large pot of salted boiling water, add pearl onions and cook for about five minutes, or until onions are just tender. Transfer
onions to an ice bath. Drain onions well and cut them in half, separating each layer into petals. Transfer onions to mustard seed mixture. Cover loosely and refrigerate for at least 12 hours before using. For hanger steaks Preheat barbecue on a high heat. Pat steaks dry with paper towels. Lightly coat steaks with oil and season liberally with salt and ground black pepper. Barbecue steaks, turning as needed, for about five minutes per side, or until steaks have a charred crust and an internal temperature of 50°C to 55°C for medium-rare. Set steaks aside to rest for 10 minutes. Carve steaks against the grain and serve along with any resting juices and pickled onions and mustard seeds.

Africa, toasts champagne glasses and eats passionfruit prawns, before a cauliflower veloute appears for a starter. Every morsel of my seared springbok and gooseberry chutney touches my lips. A cod with tender broccoli and baby beetroot is laid before me as a main with a spiced apple and chocolate cake and orange ice-cream for dessert. But if it’s a 14-course African menu you’re after, head to Gold Restaurant in Cape Town. It’s a Cape Malay and African taste roadshow with moreish curries to fish cakes, and live drumming and dancing to keep you on your toes. If that’s not enough, head to The Secret Gin Bar at the back of a chocolate shop. There’s a drink to cure heartache, impulse buying, jealousy and even disconnection from life’s purpose and meaning in the speakeasy bar. If it’s a strong coffee you need, go to the steam-punk themed Truth Coffee Roasting. Don’t forget to try the local selection of South African sausage with grilled mushroom, fried eggs, crispy bacon, cheese and spicy chakalaka for breakfast. But if fine-dining is more your calling, visit Tintswalo Atlantic where the spectacular views of Hout Bay are just as good as the food. The fynbos-ash cured salmon with an African mayo, dill and pickled edamame is the perfect start before a fynbos gin and rosemary gelato refresher. The lemongrass pork belly with raspberries and passionfruit pomme puree is a marriage for the decades. Just save room for a vanilla pod and chocolate mousse for dessert. With full bellies, we make our way to Franschhoek Country House & Villas for petite assiette dishes from Monneaux Restaurant. The crumbed brie with raspberry salad, smoked octopus in dashi, and steak with thick cut chips are my dishes of choice. But it’s not just the food you’ll want to savour in Franschhoek, located about an hour from Cape Town. The Franschhoek Wine Tram will be your best friend as
you jump on and off the bus and trains, which take you to at selection of vineyards. It’s a glorious sunny day when we board, with our first stop at Allée Bleue for a wine and cheese pairing for just $10. But you can’t go past sampling the pinotage, South Africa’s signature grape variety, which is a blend between pinot noir and cinsaut. After an hour, it’s time to change pace with a visit to Vrede en Lust. Set below the Groot Drakenstein mountain range, this vineyard has more than wine to offer. It’s here Franschhoek Wine Tram’s general manager Brett Garner drinks a coffee as he shares his passion for viticulture, while the rest of us raise wine glasses. “South African wine is very good… and inexpensive. So when you find it in a restaurant… in most areas of the world, the pricing is very competitive,” he says. “Most of the estates are outside the village, a very short drive – Franschhoek is very small. There are only 54 producers.” The waiter tells us the next train has pulled in so we scoot, waving farewell to Mr Garner. The writer travelled to South Africa as a guest of Bench Africa.

THE NEXT STEP Innovation expert Colin Graham is preparing to help small businesses on the Sunshine Coast innovate and thrive. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.
C
olin Graham, the founding CEO of the Innovation Centre Sunshine Coast, is shifting his focus towards helping SMEs who want to grow their business. He’s offering 14 local businesses tips and tools for applying an innovation mindset to any aspects of business as part of his six-week course, Innovation Masterclass. “It’s totally aimed at more established businesses,” he says. “There’s been an awful lot of attention on startups and that’s fine, but it’s only part of the mix. We’re looking at businesses with a staff of two to about 20, who’ve been operating maybe five or 10 years and have reached a certain point of growth, but want to figure out what they can do to stay relevant and find new opportunities.” The region has around 30,000 SMEs and Mr Graham says about 60 per cent of those employ only themselves, so they’re classed

as non-employing businesses by the ABS. “The challenge is for those businesses to engage with a wider community, to think bigger than the Sunshine Coast,” he says. “To do that, they need to tap into technology. Most businesses say they don’t want to grow and that’s their choice, but sometimes it’s a bit of a default choice. If they had a chat they’d say, actually we would like to do it, but we don’t know how. The challenge is to make some time.” Time – or lack thereof – is the main reason cited by business owners when asked why they don’t invest in upskilling and training, attending courses or networking. “They work seven days a week and haven’t had a holiday in eight years,” says Mr Graham. “Some are becoming really tired and a bit burnt out. The challenge is, you have to make some time to look after yourself, make some time to think more about your business. People say, ‘I’m just
going to take half a day a week but somehow I’m going to get out of the office, go somewhere else and focus on these tasks’. “The other thing I would suggest to people is really think hard about developing a good supportive peer group,” he says. “It’s tough if you don’t have anybody to speak to. Begin with your existing networks, get together informally with four or five people. “Join one of the business networks on the Coast, an industry association or a Chamber of Commerce. You need to get out a bit. Mr Graham encourages people to embrace the time-saving benefits of technology too, which frees them up to work on their business, not just in their business. “Some people are scared of technology and that’s a fairly natural thing,” he says. “There’s a firm in Kingaroy called The Peanut Van. The guy running that wanted a meeting. I said I can travel out to Kingaroy and it’s going to take me hours and I’m going to have to charge you for that. Let’s Skype. He goes, ‘what’s Skype?’. I was his first call and after that first call, he goes, ‘this is brilliant’.” Mr Graham reassures business owners they don’t need to fear words like ‘technology’ and ‘innovation’ because what they’re really about is making things easier and more efficient. “One of the things we do is tell people to Google ‘innovation’ plus your industry and spend 10 to 15 minutes doing a quick search and tell us what you find. “Some people are more innovative naturally but it’s definitely something you can learn. The really important point is that innovation is about executing new ideas to create value. Creativity is having a new idea, innovation is having a valuable idea and actually making it happen.”

1. Check out the Ten Types of Innovation by Doblin. “When you speak about innovation, people instantly think it’s all about products. Ten Types of Innovation shows there are lots of types of innovation.” 2. Educate yourself. “A lot of successful business people I see these days are educating themselves. Use technology to become an expert and see if you can tackle your niche on a nationwide basis.” 3. Use LinkedIn. “It takes five minutes max to give people an update on what you’re up to. My tip when you’re networking is to always ask, ‘is there anybody else I should speak to?’. 4. Think big. “If you have a good internet connection, there’s no reason why you have to limit your business to your local area. Food Matters is a Sunshine Coast business that started out at the Innovation Centre about 10 years ago and they’ve now got almost 2.5 million Facebook followers. It’s a good example of a business based here, but very much targeting a worldwide market.” 5. Embrace change. “If you’re doing the same thing now as you were doing 10 or 20 years ago, you’re going to get into trouble, because others are going to come along and do things differently or better.”

ASSET ALLOCATION UPDATE
A
s investors, you would be aware that your risk profile lends itself to a particular asset allocation. That asset allocation can take two forms: the first being a strategic position(in other words, a longer-term view of the mix of your investments); and the second being a tactical/dynamic position (in other words, taking a shorter-term tilt either towards or away from a particular asset class). In this article, we provide a high-level outlook on markets and offer some insights into portfolio positioning at this time.
OUTLOOK An escalation of the US/China trade conflict continues to pressure emerging-market assets, while US dollar-denominated assets, including equities, continue to run (albeit narrowly concentrated in the technology and healthcare sectors). We are wary of the divergence this creates in valuation terms, but would like to see clear evidence of the trade conflict cooling before making a tactical shift into emerging-market assets. The US mid-term elections in November are a possible timing point. All other tactical positions remain in place, including an overweight position in cash to help absorb near-term volatility.
STRATEGY We retain a slight overweight bias to Australian equities. Additionally, within this asset class we maintain our existing preferences, namely, global-facing businesses over local, those with a strong
balance sheet and businesses that can handle inflation. We retain an underweight position in the domestic banks, bond proxies and consumer-facing businesses. For international equities, we retain a slight overweight position. We have a positive view of Japan given its central bank’s more accommodative stance on interest rates, and on smaller domesticfocused US companies as they can be sheltered from trade tensions. We retain a neutral position on property trusts, as the sector is trading close to fair value after recovering from the bond sell-off. Additionally, we prefer developers

“Your risk profile lends itself to a particular asset allocation” with growth options and diversified trusts. We stay neutral on variable-rate securities as trading margins have tightened again. So, lighten longer-dated securities in favour of shorter-dated ones, where the income is attractive but with less capital volatility. On the other hand, we keep a significant underweight on fixed-rate investments due to the ongoing US Federal Reserve policy tightening and as the European Central Bank’s quantitativeeasing program winds down. Finally, we are overweight cash on a strategic basis due to the Reserve Bank of Australia staying on the sidelines, but tactically we are holding extra cash until market volatility subsides.

THE GAME CHANGERS The Sunshine Coast is in the midst of a multibillion-dollar business and development expansion that will benefit new and existing businesses. We take a look at some of the game-changing projects.
SUNSHINE COAST AIRPORT EXPANSION Marcoola Developer: John Holland Group Dredging for the Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion Project started on August 11 with the dredge making trips up and down the coastline daily with about 1.3 million cubic metres of sand collected and pumped to the site. The project will deliver a new runway compliant with regulatory standards, runway-end taxiway loops, an expanded apron and terminal facilities, new access roads and utilities. The expansion will enable direct flights to more destinations across Australia, Asia and the Western Pacific. A council spokesperson says all materials will be off the beach before the turtle nesting season begins in November.
MAROOCHYDORE CBD Maroochydore Developer: SunCentral SunCentral’s contractors are nearing completion of the first stage of civil works, which includes installation of underground infrastructure and construction of above-ground infrastructure, including new streets, walkways, bike paths, street furniture, landscaping, parks, plazas and waterways, which will ultimately become community assets. A SunCentral spokesperson says the first stage of civil works will be completed by the end of the year. “Next month, SunCentral’s contractors will begin construction of the first bridge on the site and commence construction of the first stage of ‘the Corso’ – a striking new waterway,” the spokesperson says. While SunCentral is undertaking the “horizontal development” including the underground and above-ground infrastructure, the private sector will develop the building in the new city centre, or “vertical development.” “We expect the new CBD streets to be opened before the end of the year,” the spokesperson says.

Sunshine Coast Developer: RTI Connectivity Pty Ltd From 2020, the Sunshine Coast will deliver Australia’s fastest telecommunications connection to Asia and the second fastest to the US thanks to a new international submarine cable contract agreed between Sunshine Coast Council and RTI Connectivity. After years of planning and up to $35 million invested, $15 million of which was provided by the State Government, the project has begun. The cable means Queensland businesses will, for the first time, be able to bypass Sydney to connect internationally. This will provide business with a range of new opportunities that come with increased speed and diversity. The project includes a 550-kilometre undersea fibre-optic cable that will connect the region to the 9600-kilometre JapanGuam-Australia-South submarine cable.
BOKARINA BEACH Bokarina Developer: Stockland Bokarina Beach is a hive of construction activity with work on the extension of Lake Kawana progressing well. The $19 million Nicklin Way upgrade project is now well under way and includes the construction of two new bridge crossings, with a pedestrian and cycle path underneath, and the extension of Lake Kawana into the Bokarina Beach community to connect to the new internal lake. Stockland’s Mark McMahon says to create the internal lake, more than 3500 cubic metres of soil was removed every day, with the total volume of the lake on completion set to be the equivalent of about 11 Olympic-sized swimming pools. “Work on the Nicklin Way intersection upgrade will continue for the rest of this year, while landscaping around the new lake area is due to commence shortly. Once complete, the new lake will include a pebble beach and kayak launch area, barbecue facilities and shelters,” Mr McMahon says. “Rehabilitation work around the existing wetland area will also begin in coming months. A unique component of this work will be the construction of a new boardwalk that will form part of the ultimate coastal pathway extension.”
BE PREPARED – KNOW THE VALUE OF YOUR BUSINESS It is never too early to think about what your business is worth. I don’t mean that everyone should go out tomorrow and put their business up for sale. But I recommend to anyone I mentor that you should always have a good understanding of what your business is realistically worth. You never know when you may need to sell. If you always have the value of your business in mind then you can make decisions based on ‘what value will this add to my business?’. Whether you wish to sell now or not, some simple tips to consider include: 1. Tidy up your accounts. Make sure that anyone (particularly you) can look at your accounts and understand how your business is performing. For a buyer there is nothing worse than not being able to see if a business really makes a profit or not. 2. If you live out of your business and spend money on personal or discretionary items (what business brokers call ‘add backs’) then make sure they are easy to identify and not hidden in the detail. 3. Make sure when you are ready to sell that your premises are well presented. Dirty, untidy and cluttered premises are never attractive, for either buyers or customers. 4. Why your business? Every business has a reason why people buy from it. Whether it is for convenience, price, service, product range or some other reason, make sure you know what makes your business unique. Then use that knowledge to either grow your business or to sell its value to a buyer. 5. Think about how you could improve or grow your business. Whether you actually do it or not, it is good to have options, and buyers like to know there are opportunities to grow their investment. Regardless of where you are in your business journey, make sure you know it’s value and keep making decisions that add to that value.
