Should mandates

Our already hard-hit tourism industry is suffering the effects of ongoing vaccine mandates, which are having a severe impact. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

accine mandates could have a crippling effect on several key tourism drivers in our region if they continue, warn operators.

Many operators are now calling on the Queensland Government to revoke double-dose mandates and enforce a more consistent approach when it comes to tourism venues or open-air events and attractions.

It comes as the future of the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show, scheduled for June 10 to 12 at Nambour Showgrounds, hangs in the balance.

As one of the biggest annual events on the Sunshine Coast, the show injects around $3 million into the local economy each year. About 29,000 people attended the 115th running of the event last June, after it was cancelled in 2020.

Sunshine Coast Show president, Rowan O’Hara, says the current COVID health mandates are adding an increased financial burden on the sustainability of the event with increased pressure on security, and lower workforce, exhibitors and patronage.

The Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show is one of our favourite local events manpower to check vaccination status as people enter the grounds, which is a major challenge for groups with a small volunteer base.

“Eighty per cent of Queensland shows that should have run in 2022 up to now, have been postponed or cancelled due to the mandates,” Mr O’Hara says.

The estimated cost of extra security to turn away unvaccinated patrons is around $50,000, something Queensland Ag Shows general manager Trevor Beckingham says is simply not affordable.

“If circumstances regarding the vaccine mandate for shows remains in place, we would be forced to postpone or cancel,” Mr Beckingham says.

“That’s more than $3 million in economic value that is brought to the local community that would be lost.

“Current regulations allow many sporting events, markets and exercise groups of less than 5000 patrons to operate on showground properties without proof of vaccination.

“It’s double standards and we are the only state or territory that’s being dealt with in this way,” Mr Beckingham says.

“As a result, reduced visitor numbers and increased operating costs, coupled with the loss of long-term staff have had both a significant financial and social impact on our business, staff and visitor experience, and continues to do so,” Ginger Factory CEO Andrew Bond says.

“With the upcoming school holidays we have made several representations to government and key stakeholders to have the requirement lifted.”

Aussie World is also feeling the pinch, with general manager Jenny Howell echoing calls for a mandate lift.

“These regulations are now significantly impacting customer confidence and as a result staff are losing a lot of working hours,” Ms Howell says.

Sunshine Coast Business Council chair Sandy Zubrinich says the time has come to level the playing field.

terribly over the past two years and at a time when local operators should be excited about the upcoming school holidays, many are still left questioning whether it’s even worth opening their doors given the ongoing restrictions,” Ms Zubrinich says.

“We remain supportive of following the state COVID-19 health advice, however there needs to be consistency in how this advice is applied as circumstances change.

“On the one hand we have thousands of people going through indoor shopping centres every weekend and outdoor markets where no mandates are in place, while these largely outdoor community events and struggling tourism operators continue to feel the impact.”

Why caravanning is cool again Forget high-end hotels and overseas trips – the holiday of choice throughout the pandemic and beyond starts with the humble caravan, and Australians are embracing caravanning in droves. WORDS: Candice Holznagel.

I

n 2020 Rene Neitz’s world turned upside down. Diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, the then-43-year-old underwent a lumpectomy, hormone treatment and intensive radiation. With the support of her loving husband Matt, their two children, and Mrs Neitz’s family and friends, she remained positive and was given the all-clear 12 months later.

To say the experience changed her outlook on life is an understatement.

“Nothing in life is guaranteed,” Mrs Neitz says. “If you’ve got stuff you want to do, and you are able to do it, just do it.”

This year the Coolum couple sold their home, quit their jobs, bought a caravan and told their adult children that they were hitting the road.

In two weeks they will start their adventure and spend four months travelling south through New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia before heading up the middle of the country through Alice Springs. They will arrive in the sleepy Queensland coastal town of Yeppoon – where they recently purchased a home – just in time to support their daughter as she gives birth to their first grandchild.

“The whole process for us has been a ‘we’ll do that and see what happens next’, and it’s all lined up. We’ve realised that it’s not worth stressing and being locked down into a job. Obviously people have to work.

weeks off through radiation, maybe a week after the surgery,” Mrs Neitz says.

“We just want to take a breather and take a couple of years. Luckily, we were in the position that if we sold our house we didn’t need to buy back into the same market… and we could be debt free. We would have been plugging away for another 20 years to pay the mortgage here on the Coast. We mightn’t be here in another 20 years. Nothing is a given.”

It’s a common thread among relative newcomers to the caravanning world. This ‘life is too short’ mentality, coupled with border closures and international travel difficulty, has resulted in a surge of popularity in the humble holiday.

According to the Caravan Industry Association of Australia’s (CIAA) 2021 State of Industry report, in the January to March quarter, one in three Australians took a caravan or camping trip.

It’s a thriving industry valued at around $23 billion. Ask anyone who has tried to get their hands on a caravan in the past six months and they share a similar story: it isn’t easy with second-hand vans snapped up within hours of hitting the market, and lengthy wait periods for a new buy.

As of 2020, there were more than 750,000 recreational vehicles registered on our roads with that number tipped to increase. Like many industries, the sector took a hit during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The State of Industry

Coolum couple Rene and Matt Neitz with their new purchase report highlights that compared to a record 14 million trips taken in 2019, that figure dropped to 10.6 million in December 2020.

Despite this, the industry has proven to be more resilient than most in the tourism category. Caravan park revenue still reached a whopping $1.78 billion across the nation. Queensland fared well retaining 24 per cent of the market share and recording the second strongest performance with revenue of $406 million.

Locally, the market remained strong.

Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Matt Stoeckel says while areas of the tourism industry have done it tough, the caravan sector has been a winner. “With more than 1600 caravan and camping sites across the Sunshine Coast we have long welcomed

this market to the region, as it’s our diverse natural environment which make us such an appealing destination for these travellers. During the pandemic we indeed saw an increase in caravan and campers.

“We noticed that especially during the period where travel restrictions prevented interstate visitors from reaching us, we were supported by the loyal intrastate Queensland market, many of whom were taking a road trip or travelling by caravan or campervan,” he says.

Now, as Australia exits from the throes of the pandemic, industry bodies say the industry will go from strength to strength.

“We wanted to visit family in WA and the cost flying over there for five people was a lot,’’ Mrs Turnbull says. “My husband was looking at caravans anyway, so we crunched the numbers. It worked out cheaper to buy a caravan and drive it.

“Then, at the end of the trip we would have a caravan to sell. We thought, well if we are going to go, let’s go while the kids are at that good age.”

So, with three school-aged children, the Sunshine Coast family hit the road. They spent 12 weeks travelling in their pop-top van, driving down to New South Wales and on to South Australia where they spent time on a sheep station in Broken Hill. From there they continued straight across the Nullarbor towards Western Australia. When, on the way home, the family had the chance to experience snow in Jindabyne, they didn’t hesitate to alter their plans.

“We had three days of absolutely magical snow and skiing.

“I’ve done a lot of travel myself and I knew we were creating memories that could never be erased. We were able to open the kids’ eyes up to a whole raft of things they’d never experienced before.

“If you ask the kids what their favourite part of the trip is, they say all of it.

“We kept the caravan,” Mrs Turnbull adds. “We don’t go too far, but we are still having little adventures in our caravan.”

“For now, while the kids are young this is the way forward. We are creating memories for our kids and they love it. We travel with different people, school friends, family friends. It’s a great experience.”

Mrs Parke’s tips for caravanning with children are simple: always have some shade, storage is a bonus, and when you find a location you like, rebook so you don’t miss out. As for sharing a confined space with the entire family, she says it isn’t an issue. “You don’t go camping to sit in your van the whole day. The only time you are all in there together is when you are sleeping and in the morning if it’s cool or frosty, we might have breakfast inside.

“We definitely have no regrets.”

Celebrating 100 years

I

t began as a timber building on Howard Street in 1922 and this year the Nambour Ambulance Station is commemorating 100 years of service.

Servicing the immediate needs of Nambour and the hinterland region, ambulance officers provided pre-hospital care and a mode of transport for members of the community.

One of many Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigades (QATB) across the state, in 1958, the original station was replaced with a brick building.

In 1991, QATB transformed into a state-administered service now known as the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) and in 2001 the Nambour station relocated to its current Rigby Street precinct. The Howard Street building was transformed into The Old Ambulance Station arts centre.

Today, around 50 staff work out of the Nambour station. To foster relationships between the Nambour community and QAS and provide support to local station staff, Gary Langford helped establish a

Nambour’s original Ambulance Station in 1922 Local Ambulance Committee (LAC) 23 years ago.

LACs are an important arm of the service, with volunteers performing a variety of functions, including raising awareness of ambulance services through community engagement activities and fundraising to enhance QAS services.

In Queensland there are around 150 active committees and 1600 volunteers.

Mr Langford tells My Weekly Preview the 100 years milestone is a great achievement for Nambour, which has come a long way since 1922.

As president of the LAC, he is proud of the work the committee does to continue its community education of the QAS. “A lot of people might not know a lot about QAS except that they see the lights

and sirens go through town,” Mr Langford says. “We educate people a bit more on what they do.

“Any concerns that any member of the community has, or any praises with regards to QAS can come through Local Ambulance Committees.”

He says the LAC also places a large emphasis on pre-ambulance care and what people can do in an emergency.

“We do a lot to educate the community in pre-ambulance care. The idea of ambulances is to look after pre-hospital care, and all ambulance committees are involved in pre-ambulance care. The more people we can educate in the community, the more lives we can save.”

To mark the 100 years an open day is being held on April 23 at the Nambour

Tram Facility on Mill Street. It will be a chance for all ages to come along and learn more about the day-to-day roles of the QAS. “We’ve got some vintage vehicles being brought up from Brisbane to put on display, we will have an emergency support unit for the public to have a look at, as well as a few modern first responders’ vehicles on display,” Mr Langford says.

“We will have old uniforms and equipment on display and CPR awareness sessions for the community, as well as live entertainment, food and face painting for the children.”

The Centenary Display Exhibition runs from 10am to 2pm.

Full steam ahead

A

decades-old vision for a rail network connecting the Sunshine Coast with Brisbane is finally on track after a staggering funding commitment from the federal government.

A whopping $1.6 billion has been allocated to advance the long-awaited CAMCOS project — which has not progressed since 1999.

Federal Member for Fairfax and Special Envoy for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Ted O’Brien, told Sunshine Coast News the government was offering the state government a “compelling” 50-50 funding deal on the $3.2 billion venture.

Mr O’Brien said Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Transport Minister Mark Bailey both had recently indicated the plan was worth re-examining in 2022 because of the 2032 Games and population growth.

“I would be very surprised if the state government did not see the enormous benefit of this and come to the party,” he said.

WHAT IS CAMCOS? • CAMCOS stands for Caboolture and Maroochydore Corridor Options Study.

“This is about more than connectivity.

It will help alleviate population growth pressures in our region by shifting housing density around new stations.

“This is the most transformative project the Sunshine Coast will see in generations.”

The 37-kilometre passenger rail line would branch east from Beerwah to Caloundra and Maroochydore and could be completed within a decade.

There would be key stations just west of the Caloundra Road/Pelican Waters roundabout, Kawana, near the Sunshine Coast University Hospital and the new Maroochydore city centre. The project would support 9550 direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase.

Federal Member for Fisher and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Andrew Wallace, said the federal government had already delivered funding for the duplication of the North Coast rail line, upgrades to the Bruce Highway, Steve

Irwin Way and the Mooloolah River Interchange to the tune of nearly $3.7 billion.

“This additional $1.6 billion delivers on our number one priority of bringing heavy rail to the Coast, connecting the hinterland and our coastal communities,” he said.

Federal Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, Paul Fletcher, said this was a significant investment in the Sunshine Coast.

“The Beerwah to Maroochydore passenger line has been championed for over six years by local Federal Member for Fairfax, Ted O’Brien, and Federal Member for Fisher, Andrew Wallace,” Minister Fletcher said.

The federal government will continue to work closely with the Queensland government on investment planning to deliver this important transport link.

• Initial public consultation of the corridor was conducted in January 1999, with the vision of a heavy rail line from Brisbane branching east at Beerwah and taking passengers directly to coastal suburbs at Caloundra and Maroochydore.

It was a golden night for a Sunshine Coast accommodation provider at the recent Qantas Australian Tourism Awards.

Narrows Escape Rainforest Retreat in Montville claimed to top spot in the Hosted Accommodation category at the industry’s night of nights.

It was a double win for the region, with the Sunshine Coast Convention Centre chosen to host more than 700 tourism operators and guests for the event. In more local success, Pelican Boat Hire in Noosaville claimed bronze in the Tourism, Retail and Hire Services category.

Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson says it was an exciting night for tourism operators, highlighting how important the national tourism industry is for the economy.

“Hosting the awards gave us the means to showcase our very own distinct Sunshine Coast tourism experiences to industry peers from across the nation, and notably, our welcoming spirit,” Mayor Jamieson says.

The Sunshine Coast’s reputation as a food and beverage hub is set to take off with the announcement of funding for a world-first manufacturing facility.

The federal government is promising $33.4 million towards the $112.8 million Turbine Precinct, which will be operational by 2023.

The 20,000-square metre purpose-built centre located at Sunshine Coast Airport will become Australia’s leading industrybased food and beverage research and commercialisation facility.

Businesses will be able to use its warehousing and logistics, an education and training centre, research and development capabilities and collaborative high-tech manufacturing facility.

The location at the airport will also give direct access to new export opportunities from the expanded international runway.

Federal Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien says the funding will not only get the project off the ground but also become a catalyst for further industry investment.

“This massive investment will transform the local food and beverage sector and will create a stronger future for the Sunshine Coast – built on a stronger economy,” Mr O’Brien says.

Meet the man behind the lens Brett McIntosh’s photography celebrates the natural beauty of the region, and he’s getting ready to share more of his work at the upcoming Immanuel Arts Festival.

I

t was during a trip to Western Australia that Brett McIntosh fell in love with photography. He’d dabbled in video recording and studied photography at TAFE when he left school, but never imagined it would one day become a career and a true passion, one that would see him win multiple awards for his stunning work.

“I didn’t have any particular talent for photography,” he says. “But after my TAFE course I did a trip over to WA and I took my camera. It was a surfing trip and we were camping a lot of the time in really remote places in the north of Western Australia. That’s probably where my love of photography developed.

“I was just capturing the sun setting over the ocean and it would light up all of the landscape this beautiful orange colour.

This real raw, rugged coastline with all these yellows and oranges in the rocks; that’s what really sparked my interest in trying to capture that with some waves or surfing shots in the background.”

Based in Coolum with his wife and two kids, Mr McIntosh is the Artist in Focus at

this year’s Immanuel Arts Festival, where he’s won many awards during his 10 years as a professional photographer.

“I’ve won some firsts and some seconds and I’ve been Artist in Residence in the past,” he says. “It’s the biggest art show on the Sunshine Coast as far as I know and it’s a great platform for the art community to display their work.

“As Artist in Focus, there will be a bit more of a showcase of my work as you walk in through the front doors and I’ll be there to say hello to people and chat about my work, which I love to do. People really appreciate having that one-on-one with the artist.”

An intense richness of colour and detail is something that really stands out in Mr McIntosh’s photos. He achieves this using high dynamic range or HDR photography, a technique that combines a series of exposures of the same subject, mashing them together to produce a vivid image. He spends many hours working on one image to create the finished product – usually of iconic Sunshine Coast landscapes.

“HDR is what I initially started doing, but I’ve diversified a lot over the years in the way I capture my photos,” he says. “I’m not so structured in the methods I use. It depends on the scene as to the technique I apply. I use a combination of filters and other times it will be doing some HDR. Sometimes it will just be a straight shot and it will be perfect.

“A lot of my popular photos are sunrises, but also those really nice, beachy days when the weather conditions are perfect for a daytime photos. It’s usually in the middle of winter, after it hasn’t rained for a while and the clarity of the water is there. I try to capture those scenes, as well as a good sunset or sunrise, with lots of colour and interest in the sky. I compose photos with interest in the whole scene and I include a lot of detail.”

Mr McIntosh grew up on the Sunshine Coast and while photography wasn’t on the curriculum where he attended school in Mountain Creek and Kawana, he loved taking his video camera to the beach to capture surfers. But at that point in his life, he never imagined photography could

become a career and had 14 different jobs before he found the right path.

He displays his work in two galleries – Seaview Artists Gallery at Moffat Beach and Peace of Green in Maleny – with most of his clients coming through his home studio. His goal is to one day have his own gallery, but for now he’s busy raising his young family and scouring the Coast for that perfect, one-in-a-million shot.

“My drive for landscape photography is to capture something beautiful for people to look at,” he says. “We have so many beautiful iconic locations on the Sunshine Coast and that’s what drives me to try to capture those iconic locations in the best possible way and in the best possible conditions and light.

“I like creating images that have the ‘wow’ factor. That’s my drive for creating what I create and getting an artwork into someone’s house that’s beautiful and can brighten up their day.”

APPLY NOW FOR LOCAL ART FUNDING GRANTS The latest Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grant round is open!

Funds are aimed at the development of emerging and established artists, creative practitioners and producers and are awarded to projects that align with the Sunshine Coast Arts Plan 2018 – 2038.

There are five funding categories per year, with the remaining closing dates including 1 July and 1 November.

Earlier this month I had the pleasure of hosting the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards recipients’ ceremony at The Events Centre, Caloundra.

This event is always a personal highlight, as it showcases the extraordinary and selfless work our Sunshine Coast community carries out.

Congratulations to the following people and organisations: James (Jim) Coles (Senior Citizen of the Year), Jack Watson and Sophie Greenhalgh (Young Citizens of the Year), ECOllaboration (Environment), Dr Bridie Kean (Sport and Recreation), Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club (Community), and John Waldron and Toni Eggleston (Creative).

I’d like to also give a special mention to Buderim resident Mark Ellis, who was named the 2022 Sunshine Coast Citizen of the Year.

Through his role as community development co-ordinator at the Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre, Mark co-ordinated the One Roof Program, which supports those experiencing homelessness.

He also helped raise $200,000 for the Coast’s first sleep bus for Mark Jamieson men, women Mayor and children.

BRINGING HOPE TO FOSTER CHILDREN A Caloundra business with a big heart. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

A

long-standing Caloundra hairdressing salon is making a difference to the lives of children in the foster system.

Frangipani Cutting Crew has been servicing clients for more than 20 years.

Managing director Vicki Barry (pictured) has always wanted to do something to help children less fortunate and after hearing about charity Hope in a Suitcase Australia, she decided to get on board.

When children enter the foster system, they often have nothing more than the clothes on their backs. Hope in a Suitcase is a not-for-profit organisation that partners

with child safety service centres and foster care agencies to bring every child that enters care a new suitcase.

The suitcases are filled to suit age groups from newborn to early teenagers and include essential items such as toiletries, underwear/nappies, clothing, toys and books. Ms Barry has registered her salon as a collection point. Residents can drop off items that go directly to the charity.

“I always wanted to help children in foster care but always had children of my own or worked full time,” she says. “These children are so in need. They get pulled out of homes, often without warning or if they

are in danger.

“When I found out about it, I thought this is something I can do to help. Knowing sometimes [children] arrive at a foster carer’s home and they have nothing, it’s a lovely thing to do to be able to fill up a suitcase for them.”

Ms Barry says 95 per cent of her long-term clients are local and their generosity and that of the wider Caloundra community is overwhelming.

“We’ve had people bring whole suitcases in. They’ve gone and bought a suitcase and filled it up for a particular age group. It is so amazing how generous people are.

“We’ve got a list of what is needed and if people want to help, we can give them the list. We say to them next time they are grocery shopping or in Kmart, if they can pick up just one thing it can make a difference.”

Ms Barry hopes the community will continue its generosity.

READY FOR INVICTUS A Royal Australian Air Force veteran is preparing to compete in the Invictus Games next month.

Nirimba’s Stephen French joined the RAAF in 1985 and was medically discharged in 1996. He is a cancer survivor and lives with multiple physical and mental injuries, including PTSD. He says sport is his lifeline and he has represented Australia in wheelchair basketball and rugby, and played for the South East Queensland Wheelchair Rugby League club.

At 59, Mr French is the oldest member of the Australian Invictus Games team and will compete in wheelchair basketball, rugby, indoor rowing and seated discus.

Mr French will also shave off his long beard following the games to raise money for Legacy, a charity that provides support to the families of Australian Defence Force men and women who have lost their life or health in conflicts.

MATTHEW FLINDERS DONATION DRIVE A BRIGHT IDEA Students, staff and families at Matthew Flinders Anglican College have donned their best high-vis clothing to support flood-affected residents of the Gympie region.

The school community chose a bright fluoro dress theme to celebrate Queensland’s brave emergency crews and volunteers to raise more than $12,000.

College Chaplain Reverend Kathrin Koning says the response from the school community has been heart-warming, with donated funds and supplies to be sent to the Anglican parish of Gympie

for distribution where required.

“Our Flinders community was invited to donate items, and people have been so generous,” Reverend Koning says.

“Students, staff and parent volunteers have helped to organise the hundreds of bags of donations we received within just a few days, which include food, quality clothes and bedding, children’s toys, cleaning products and other supplies.”

Families can donate to the Flinders flood-relief fundraiser until the end of term one.

A multimillion-dollar marina, and the first on the Sunshine Coast in more than 30 years, is ready to be constructed at Pelican Waters.

Pelican Waters Marina will offer a state-of-the-art dry-boat storage for up to 160 vessels, 126 wet berths, a fully equipped chandlery and full-service marine yard.

Apr 5 ORCHESTRA OF EXTINCTION ARC PERFORMS NEIL YOUNG’S HARVEST LIVE – 50TH ANNIVERSARY In February 1972, Neil Young released what would become his most successful record.

Harvest was his fourth studio album and followed on from the brilliant After the Gold Rush, becoming the biggest selling album of 1972 and giving Mr Young his first number one album and single with Heart of Gold.

ARC will be presenting Harvest in its entirety before returning to the stage in the second half of the night to present a selection of Neil Young classics from the career of one of rock music’s true masters.

Orchestra of Extinction is a long-term project in which artists Forest Keegel and Amanda King explore the habitat of threatened species. They record sound and video footage to be housed in old radiogram cabinets that are encrusted with residue of the species’ habitat. Each of these cabinets become an archive for a particular species, forming a record of what the artists have learnt about them through research, walking and recording in their habitat and speaking with scientists and experts.

SHAME ABOUT THE SHOW

Ash Barty’s retirement announcement has Jane Stephens pondering the tennis player’s importance in our lives.

H

ow much do we love Ashleigh Barty? She wowed us on the tennis court. She impressed us even more off the court with her courtesy and grace. And now, at the top of the game and aged just 25, she is retiring.

Barty’s victory on home soil in January was like sunshine on a cloudy day, an event that filled our hearts and lifted our heads at a time when so much was bad about the world. She was cemented as the nation’s darling, a latter-day hero.

There is nothing false or overtly showy about her. She is small but triumphed over giants. She is calm but not emotionless, precise but still human.

It is said that her first tennis coach Jim Joyce encouraged his extraordinarily talented young charge to prioritise four things – be a good person, show respect for others, have fun and be happy.

As well as a great deal of winning, those four things were always on display.

We need heroes now more than ever.

We have a fascination for them that starts in toddlerhood when dress-ups come in bright colours and superpowers come with a mask. From our earliest memories, heroes save us and make the world a better,

safer place – something little kids crave.

But it turns out we need them too.

Psychoanalyst Carl Jung found the hero archetype was needed to offset the demons in our midst.

There has rarely been a more uncertain, fearful time than the era we are in. Disease, war, floods and rising costs of living have spread anxiety and depression like weeds.

Barty gave us something to cheer for, something to feel good about.

As an athlete, she shirked the made-up, done-up trend that pervades the tennis tour, but after wiping the floor with an opponent, she would put on her pretty engagement ring as soon as she finished a match.

Her career earnings were in the millions, but she could not have been more down-to-earth or courteous.

Heroes usually undergo a transformation to become that way: Peter Parker was bitten by a spider and Clark Kent was an awkward geek before miraculously morphing.

Barty transformed, too. She came back.

And then she soared.

And now she is done with tennis.

Even heroes need to rest.

Ashley Robinson laments the possibility that the Sunshine Coast’s annual agricultural show may not be going ahead this year.

I

read with sadness that the Nambour show may not go ahead this year because of COVID restrictions (all parties have to be vaccinated to either volunteer, perform, offer services or attend), which is a massive drain on all areas.

Last year 29,000 people attended, which was a huge effort considering the year before it was cancelled.

If it doesn’t go ahead I am sad on a few fronts, firstly my wonderful memories as a little fat kid going to the show. While Dad was entering his pineapples in the fruit pavilion and occasionally winning a prize, I was always determined to eat my way through sideshow alley and I reckon I would have been age champion many years running if there was a weight-for-age dagwood dog-eating competition.

From a very young age I can remember plenty of friends of Mum and Dad that worked tirelessly as volunteers to make it a biggest and best show, a celebration of our rural background. While that has changed, the dedication of the volunteers these days hasn’t. Rather than the horses and riders jumping hurdles in the central arena it’s

now the volunteers jumping them to try and keep things going.

On a really personal note I am also forever attached to the Nambour show, not just the dagwood dogs, soft drinks, fairy floss, toffee apples (another title I would have won) and the rides on sideshow alley. It was also referenced in the last words my father ever said. On June 16, 1984 he was driving Mum to bingo at Yandina in the pouring rain and as he passed the showgrounds he said to Mum, “I feel sorry for those poor buggers in sideshow alley trying to make a living in this weather.” He had a massive heart attack at the end of that sentence and passed away.

If you can go to Bunnings and have a coffee to take away from inside the building without being vaxed, if you’re crammed in any supermarket or retail shop in the state without being vaxed and you can go to markets on the same site without being vaxed, surely you can have a rural show? And if I as an individual decide I don’t want to risk it because others won’t be vaxed, guess what, I won’t go. Just let me decide. Am I missing something?

NO-GROW ZONE Sami Muirhead is no gardener – just ask the dead fern on her kitchen bench. But she has other talents, she thinks.

“N

o one can kill a maidenhair fern, trust me!” promised my green-thumb friend, Tiffany. Well, Tiff, I did manage to murder my maidenhair and it now sits dead staring at me to remind me of how useless I really can be at times.

Who kills the unkillable plant? Me! My grandmother used to have a maidenhair in her kitchen and I thought it was time for me to follow in my family’s fertile footsteps. Apparently not. The plant quickly lost its lustre and turned brown and in doing so put a rude stop to my supposed glorious entry to being a gardening genius.

So, Tiffany promptly gifted me a succulent with the promise it was truly bulletproof.

It needed first aid and died.

My peace lilies wilted and looked far from peaceful. Aloe vera seems allergic to my touch. Even the common mother-inlaw’s tongue is impossible for me to nurture. Alas, I garden as well as I cook and drive. Very badly.

Luckily I am excellent at spending money, hoarding all sorts of treasures and making cheese platters. This sums up the grand total of my skill set in life. Limited.

What a lucky husband I have indeed.

I always tell him he married the wrong sister as my older sibling is a catch who can run a marathon in the morning and cook a gourmet three-course dinner for a dozen people that afternoon. I kid you not.

FED TIGHTENING CYCLES AND MARKETS The US Federal Reserve (‘Fed’) has begun its rate tightening cycle. The Fed has also ended its $US120 billion per month bond purchasing program.

Key characteristics of past Fed tightening cycles include: – Size: the seven cycles since 1982 Fed tightening cycles have averaged 2.59 per cent, with a range of 1.38 per cent (ended by the 1987 crash) to 4.25 per cent. The Fed’s dot-point forecasts project rates rising to at least 2.1 per cent in late 2024. US short rate futures and the two-year bond yield at 1.5 per cent imply a terminal rate of ~two per cent, so also a below-average cycle.

– Starting Point: over the past seven cycles the starting point rate has averaged 4.4 per cent, with an extreme range of 0.1 to 9.5 per cent. In real terms (less inflation) the starting point has averaged 1.3 per cent, with the range only slightly narrower at -1.9 per cent to +4.6 per cent. The current starting point of 0.1 per cent is the equal record low, but the real rate of -5.9 per cent is the record low by four per cent!

– Duration: tightening cycles on average last 15.7 months, with a wide range of four to 37 months. The last two cycles have been the longest by some margin at 25 months (Jun 04 to Jun 06) and 37 months (Dec 15 to Dec 18), with the prior

range four to 13 months. The Fed’s forecasts project rates rising through at least Dec 24, or at least 33 months.

– Peak: the rate cycle has peaked at an average 7.0 per cent, with a range of 2.38 to 11.75 per cent. In real terms the peak averages 3.5 per cent, with a range of +0.2 to 6.5 per cent. The Fed’s dot-points in late-24 point to a possible peak of 2.1 per cent, or 0.0 per cent in real terms. This would be a record low in both nominal and real terms over at least the past 60 years.

The Fed and markets are assuming this will be a smaller than average tightening cycle and almost the longest in duration, despite the record low starting point. The peak would be a record low.

This Fed tightening cycle begins with an economic backdrop not seen in the past 40 years. Inflation is at 5.2 per cent and wage growth is at 5.7 per cent. Money supply is rising at 13.1 per cent year on year and up 39.9 per cent from pre-COVID levels. Unemployment is at a historically low four per cent. Very strong consumer and business fundamentals are powering the strongest US real GDP growth in 40 years, up 5.5 per cent. In short the US economy is booming.

By contrast, Fed policy settings are still at emergency levels. With the economy and Fed at different extremes, market expectations of a smaller than average cycle seem highly optimistic. By contrast, we expect this Fed tightening cycle to be larger than average, to end at positive real rates, and to be much faster than the prior two.

Business in the past has focused on the business, B2B, B2C and all sorts of other technical things. Strategy is important, of course, and so is being on top of finances and all the other ‘business’ things. But without people you don’t have a business!

We need our humans! So seeing your business as a heart-to-heart venture will transform it – especially in these times.

Hands up all those who have been miserable in a job and been spectacular at customer service, sales or engagement?

We seem to keep ignoring the fact that a joyful team and a joyful work environment are the key ingredients to business success and profits!

Yet few leaders or founders focus on

Literally. The quickest way to build your team spirit and a joyful culture again is to help your people reconnect socially with each other. It builds a sense of belonging and includes everyone.

Create opportunities for morning teas when everyone is expected to be in the office or Friday night drinks or dinner – any sort of regular get-together so they can connect again and overcome those fears and lack of confidence.

ADDRESS THE FEARS AND ERADICATE THEM Ask people in honest, transparent and authentic conversations how they are feeling. Or as a group ask them if they feel safe at work – physically, mentally, emotionally. Ask if they are okay. Get the team together to discuss fears as a group so they see they are not alone – instantly that makes everyone feel better. Most of those fears will be around confidence and safety!

CREATE A JOYFUL WORKPLACE Do fun things. Pair people up as joy buddies. Joy buddies are not just joy buddies – they are also accountability buddies! When people feel they are growing and developing at work, they are more engaged and joyful – and better at working! Running training

sessions that are fun and allocating joy buddies and giving them targets and encouraging accountability really matters, and allows them to take responsibility for themselves and their growth. Ongoing training helps them feel confident in their level of knowledge and skills, and that matters!

Generation Z, who are just hitting their early twenties, are the least positive generation in history! A pandemic, climate change and a war are weighing heavily on their minds.

All those adventures were with people my own age and were really fun.

For today’s Gen Z, travel and meeting new friends at uni were all put on hold. They also had to spend way too much time at home with their parents and not their friends.

Our future business leaders are down in the dumps, and we should ask, “Will they be there when we need them?” We owe it to them and to future prosperity and health to fix this.

MATCHMAKING WASTE LOVERS Sunshine Coast businesses across all industries are urged to reduce their waste by signing up to ASPIRE today. WORDS: Andrew Eves-Brown.

A

s business owners, changing our thinking and behaviour around treating waste as a resource is imperative if we are to continue our journey to become Australia’s most sustainable region.

ASPIRE – an online matchmaking tool allowing business to list items they no longer want or to register to receive notifications when items of interest are listed – can be the first step.

Sunshine Coast Council was one of the first in Queensland to invest in the ASPIRE platform where items can be gifted or members can also list unwanted waste streams for sale, post a photo and see if another member ecosystem is interested.

Members can then communicate through the connection and make decisions member-to-member regarding pick-up, conditions, and any other related issues.

Other descriptions for this type of arrangement could be a social business network, or online marketplace to buy and sell ‘waste’ of all kinds - from empty pallets to concrete rubble.

The aim is to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, and it’s a great opportunity for our local businesses to

Business-to-business connections may be local, the wider southeast Queensland ASPIRE members or even nationally as part of the ASPIRE-wide ecosystem with more than 800 Australian businesses part of national ASPIRE ecosystem.

To date, 45,728 tonnes of waste have been diverted from landfill.

Any entity with an ABN (Sunshine Coast-based) with up to 100 full-time staff can be a member of ASPIRE free of charge under our council license with ASPIRE. We

can also assist larger organisations join the regional ecosystem.

More than 115 Sunshine Coast-based businesses have already joined the platform, and we have a number of case studies showing the power of circular economy actions and what can be achieved, even with simple actions.

The breakdown of members across industry type shows three key sectors already taking advantage of this resource – manufacturing at 22 per cent, retail and wholesale trade at 18 per cent; and professional, scientific and technical services at 10 per cent.

A great exchange and relationship now in place between Coyo and Dolphin Plastics and Packaging will see 1200 timber pallets diverted from landfill. This will lead to a $2000 waste disposal saving for Coyo and $24,000 procurement savings for Dolphin Plastics.

Civilmart and Hall Contracting recently formed an exchange that will mean waste disposal savings of $10,000 for Civil Mart and 48,000 kilos of embodied carbon emissions savings as a result of more than 240,000 kilos of concrete rubble being diverted from landfill over a year.

Helping to spread the word of ASPIRE and ‘circular economy’ in and across our community is one of my key messages.

Because let’s face it, alarm bells should be ringing with more than 67 million tonnes of waste currently being produced yearly in Australia – with one-third of this being contributed by commercial waste.

E-waste or electronic waste (such as TVs and PCs) is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the world.

It’s critical that we manage our energy, waste and natural resources efficiently and sustainably. I challenge businesses from all sectors to examine their current waste practices and to sign-up to ASPIRE. WHAT IS A CIRCULAR ECONOMY? The closing of material and energy loops in the economy. The goal is to retain material and energy flows at their highest possible value and utility for as long as possible, while providing for a safe and regenerative end of life disposal.

Business owners appear to be hanging on, perhaps due to the abundance of negative news we have had recently with Ukraine, COVID and the heart-breaking floods experienced on the east coast.

I predict sentiment will change after the federal election and the market will be inundated with baby boomers looking to retire. The average age of a baby boomer is now 67, and a large percentage of these have been at the helm of medium to large businesses for many years, so it’s inevitable most are ready to put their feet up.

PREPARING YOUR BUSINESS FOR SALE (PART 2/3) Many sellers come unstuck when they choose to sell their businesses due to being under-prepared.

Preparing a business for sale to ensure a premium result takes time, however, this investment will reward those who have an exit strategy before going to the market.

Buyers will conduct a forensic due diligence prior to going unconditional on a contract. During this process any skeletons in the closet will be found.

Often leases, franchise/licence/supply/ service agreements and intellectual property is where sellers fall short.

Buyers must have tenure on leases and agreements, as these processes can take months to put in place. You also need to ensure the arrangements you have in place are transferrable to a new owner. Presenting a business professionally will yield a stronger result. Bring your website up to date, push for quality Google reviews from customers, ensure signage/ vehicles/uniforms/gardens are fresh and present well and get a good social media presence.

long-term staff about what is happening. If they are unaware of a pending sale when a buyer wants to meet them, they may freak out, perhaps leave, and cost you a sale. Job security is of huge importance to them and as important for buyers to retaining the relationships they have in place.

Of course, financials will play a huge part in the sale process. Ensure you have all financial statements up to date and interim figures for the current financial year. This includes BAS, debtors (reel in money that you are owed) and payroll/wage summaries for corresponding periods.

Choosing a business broker to guide you and achieve the best result is crucial.

Research them, ensure they are familiar with your industry and have sold similar businesses in your price range. Ask them for their recent results and how they will pro-actively sell your business, as many brokers simply list them on websites and wait for the phone to ring. The longer your business is on the market, the less likely you are to achieve the optimum result.

Businesses usually attract the majority of buyer enquiries in the first few weeks of hitting the market – this is advantageous to sellers when negotiating.

5 BANKING TIPS The past few years has seen tremendous change in all markets, and this is no different with banking services. The ‘supply and demand’ impact on all facets affecting business will only intensify in 2022 with the events that are unfolding in Ukraine. In saying this, the fundamental principles of business that are within our control remain constant.

There are many aspects to having a successful business. Here are five banking tips which cover all business for managing your business banking: 1. Have a banking relationship. Those businesses that handle growth and adversity well have a strong relationship with their banking partner.

2. Have sufficient capital to run their business and sufficient cash reserves to allow for growth. I’ve heard it many times

when someone says, “gee ABC Pty Ltd have had a lucky run”. In most instances, the business worked exceptionally hard on their capital controls (cash) and had sufficient capital (cash) to grow as the opportunity presented itself. They created their luck.

3. Cash in/cash out – how well do you receive your client payments? How well do you control your supplier payments? The key to a strong business is to have a strong liquidity ratio (short-term cash to meet short-term obligations). Those businesses trending at two-plus times liquidity have these three things in common: a. Good margin on their product b. Clients who pay within one to seven days c. Suppliers on 30-plus day terms.

These businesses are not controlled by their cashflow, they control their cashflow.

4. Keep a separate tax account.

Whether it’s GST, instalment tax or planning for your annual tax bill, have a separate account to put money outside your main trading account.

5. Protect your credit rating. Don’t allow finance providers to complete a credit check unless you are certain you will use that provider. The stronger your credit profile, the more likely you’ll get the finance solutions you need to support your business.

When employees are engaged, they are productive, they problem solve, they innovate, contribute and display behaviour that demonstrates they are happy to be at work. If you look at your employees and don’t see this type of behaviour you need to look closely at the degree of employee engagement in your workforce.

Engagement isn’t just measuring employee satisfaction. Employee engagement activities are a collective of people management activities you should be conducting in your workplace.

• Establishing and communicating strong objectives and values.

• Ensuring your company values equate to the desired workplace behaviour you want demonstrated.

• Strong recruitment processes so that the effort to recruit the right person with the right skills that ‘fits’ in your company is made – every time you recruit.

• An induction program that settles the new employee into their role quickly, smooths the transition into a new work environment and makes them productive as quickly as possible.

• A fair compensation and benefits program.

• Managers or leaders with excellent management and leadership skills.

• Managers who proactively performance manage their team.

This is the seventh in our series of articles on the uncertainties of death.

“I can do my Will myself, right?”

Well, yes but what is the ‘true cost’ of trying to save a few dollars now?

If your ‘do it yourself’ Will is not properly drafted, clear in its terms and correctly witnessed, the true cost of the Will may substantially exceed the cost of seeking legal advice now in the preparation of your estate planning.

Often it is necessary to make an Application to the Court to seek Orders to rectify defects in ‘home made’ Wills.

Your home made Will might not be legally recognised and the cost to prove the document is your Will may be significant.

Also, it might not ‘catch’ all of the assets that you intend, such as jointly held property, life insurance and superannuation.

By not taking on the responsibility to have your Will and estate plan in place, you can cause unnecessary emotional hurt and significant cost for friends and family members.

Working from home: • Portable electric devices such as laptops and mobile phones are commonly used for work. Providing such devices to your employees shouldn’t trigger an FBT liability, as long they are primarily used by your employees for work.

• A review of all items is suggested.

This is because if your business keeps a valid logbook/odometer records and is eligible to use the logbook method, the ATO will accept that a FBT liability won’t arise if the car: • Has not been driven at all during the period even if it has been garaged at home; or • Has only been driven briefly to maintain the car.

In Australia, the outcome of a property settlement division is as unique and varied as the individuals themselves. The Family Law Act sets out a pathway to divide assets on a basis that is just and equitable having regard to many factors, but generally following a staged process as follows: 1. Identify the interests of the parties and determine whether it is just and equitable to make any order that changes the currently held interests of the parties.

2. If the property is to be adjusted between the parties, identify the values of all the assets and liabilities of the parties and ‘pool’ those values to arrive at a net value.

3. Compare the contributions the parties have made and make an assessment of the percentage contribution by each at the commencement of the relationship, during the relationship, and if there was a long period of separation.

4. Compare the competing future needs of the parties in respect of how they will individually support themselves and any minor children of the relationship.

5. Apply the percentage to the assets to determine how they could be divided and consider whether this is equitable and practicable.

Legal advice should be obtained before finalising any proposed division after separation.

CHANGES TO SUPER MAY LEAD TO PROPERTY MARKET LIFT Downsizers and first homebuyers will benefit from superannuation changes coming into effect from July 1. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

F

rom July 1 two changes to Australia’s superannuation system will benefit downsizers and first homebuyers and may lead to another uplift in the residential property market.

The eligibility age for downsizer contributions will drop from 65 to 60 years old. Eligible people will be able to choose to make a downsizer contribution into their superannuation of up to $300,000 per person (or $600,000 per couple) from the proceeds of the sale of their home without it impacting their contributions caps.

The other key change is first homebuyers’ eligible contributions that count towards a person’s maximum releasable amount across all years will increase from $30,000 to $50,000.

Both changes open the door to more market movement, but how they will impact on the Coast’s current buoyant but undersupplied market is difficult to answer.

Direct Collective’s Mal Cayley is concerned that with the current undersupply of Coast property, for downsizers selling their home to free up equity, it opens up the quandary of where are they then going to buy.

“We have people who have homes they don’t need to live in for the size and which they have great equity in, but they are house-locked; they have nowhere to go to,” he says.

Moving to a retirement village is one option but Mr Cayley says there isn’t enough of that accommodation. As to moving to an apartment when there is an undersupply?

“We need to deliver, not approve, 3000 units a year and we are not hitting 1000,” he adds.

Mr Cayley doesn’t expect any noticeable impact by downsizer selling on the local market.

“The Coast market, regardless of what happens across the country at a macro level, has incredibly strong drivers for price growth over the next five to 10 years,” he says. “So what they then have to compare is if downsizers were to put $300,000 in to get a tax break, is that better than just leaving it where it is?”

demand, but it still comes back to the Coast market’s ability to meet demand and entry affordability. While Mr Cayley says investing in the Coast’s residential market is worth considering, the costs of that choice compared to keeping the money in superannuation needs to be evaluated.

housands of miles away a young Coast couple battled the time difference and a tight auction on Thursday in the hope of securing their dream family home at Battery Hill.

With the phone line between New York and the Coast running hot, the

honeymooning couple Greg and Maddie were relaying to the bride’s father determined instructions on how to bid for the three-bedroom home at 20 Coraki Street.

In the Ray White Caloundra auction room at Caloundra RSL were the other seven anxious bidders.

Bidding started at $850,000 before the auction hit its stride and rose quickly to $1.1 million. Then there were only two in the running – the young couple in the USA and a young pilot with his financier at his side and a desire to move to the beachside from Caloundra West – on the ground in Caloundra.

The bids came in; $1000 at a time until they reached $1.106 million and the hammer came down. If you listened carefully, you could probably have heard the happy couple’s cheers all the way from New York.

“Battery Hill is probably one of the last of what I would call affordable suburbs on the beach side in Caloundra,” Ray White agent Tom Garland said. “If we uplifted that home and moved it 200 metres towards Dicky Beach there would no change out of $1.5 million. These young couples see that.

“They try to buy Moffat and Dicky Beach but the prices for something similar have moved beyond reach for these young buyers. But they still want to be on beach side where they can get future capital growth. So, when they can buy a house 200 metres away for $1.1 million rather than

Around the townhouse garden were several other bidders. And in the middle was the auctioneer James Goldsworthy desperately trying to keep up with the bidding.

The speed of the bidding when the auction started was frantic to say the least.

There were bids coming in left, right and centre. Ray White agent Mr Higgins had five of his agents on the phones trying to manage the 11 registered bidders.

“Then the two top bidders came down to only $500 apart,” Mr Higgins said. “We had a lot of bidders going into the

$700,000s but it was really only top bidding at the top.” Those top two were the couple from Melbourne and a Brisbane man who was more than ready to buy.

Right near the end of the auction the mother of the bidder from Melbourne came up to the Brisbane bidder and determinedly asked him to stop bidding because her daughter wanted to buy the townhouse.

The Brisbane bidder wasn’t going to be put off. He kept his hat in the ring as the spirited bidding continued until the price reached $792,500 and the hammer came down some $77,500 over the reserve.

The townhouse was so sought after because it’s in a small complex and has a large courtyard which backs onto a park, which fronts onto a canal. “So, you aren’t paying to have water access,” Mr Higgins said. “But for the lifestyle buyers to be able to walk through the park and put a kayak or SUP in the water, it was really attractive.”

NEAR TO BEACH IS NEAR ENOUGH The Kings Beach location and the presentation of the five-bedroom home at 3 Upper Gay Terrace made all the difference to a professional couple from Brisbane wanting the best of the Coast’s lifestyle.

While four registered bidders started the chase for this piece of paradise, it

finally came down to a two-bidder race as the auction progressed. The hammer finally came down at $2.90 million.

The result was well above market expectations Ray White Caloundra agent Natascha Drexel-Munro said.

It was an emotional time for the vendors who built the architecturally designed dream home.

“It has to be one of the most beautiful homes; absolutely stunning,” Ms DrexelMunro said. “There is nothing else like it in Kings Beach; nothing we could compare it to. It’s doesn’t have ocean views, but it has the location and the design of the home.

“You see homes like that and normally they are on the water, but this one is a couple of streets back from the beach.”

Well, I have finally made my way home being stuck between a massive body builder who used way too much cologne and a young excited backpacker who decided to bring all her luggage on a 15-hour flight. Yep, I was punished for having a great snowboarding holiday.
